<title>BEAUTY SALONS AND CLINICS STILL BREACHING REGULATIONS SAYS LEADING MEDICAL EXPERT</title>
<description>A LEADING aesthetic doctor is warning those seeking wrinkle-free skin to beware of Botox bandits who are flagrantly flouting safety guidelines.

Dr Dan Dhunna, based at the exclusive Cawston Manor clinic in Rugby, believes some people's quest for a fresher face may be putting their health in danger.

Recent guidelines from top healthcare bodies mean anyone undergoing Botox must have a face-to-face consultation with the prescribing physician.

The concern is some establishments may not be following this practice and injections are still being given without the expertise of a trained clinician.

Dr Dhunna, who has extensive experience in dermatology and cosmetic procedures and also provides training in Botox and other filler treatments, said: "Botox is a prescription only drug but before the guidelines many nurses and even beauticians and therapists were using a loophole in the system which allowed the issuing and use of a prescription without the prescriber actually seeing the patient.

"It seemed anyone could don a white coat, call themselves a cosmetic technician and start using injectables. Of course this was a major concern for health professionals and consumer groups. In the right hands Botox is extremely safe and effective but problems may occur if it is over-used, applied inexpertly or to the wrong places.
'There may also be cases where clients request and receive Botox but do not really need it, a situation unlikely to happen if a full doctor's consultation is involved."

After a thorough review of the non-surgical cosmetic industry and following calls for stronger regulation in the use of treatments such as Botox, the Independent Healthcare Advisory Council, which looks after the interests of the independent healthcare sector, doctor's regulatory body, the General Medical Council and nurses body, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, all agreed new guidelines last August for the prescribing and use of Botox.

Dr Dhunna said: "Face to face consultations with the prescribing doctor are now mandatory. The difficulty is there are no 'Botox police'. It is up to the non-surgical cosmetic industry to adhere to these regulations voluntarily and there may still be some clinics or salons which are not doing that.

"Of course any doctor or nurse found to be operating outside of the guidelines can be disciplined."

Botox, which is derived from a the botulism germ in much the same way that penicillin is derived from mould and contrary to myth is very safe. It works by relaxing facial muscles for between four and six months, softening the appearance of wrinkles, is a very safe drug when administered correctly and professionally. In less experienced hands it can cause problems.

Achieving that sought-after subtle, refreshed look is as much an art as a cosmetic application. Over-arched or drooping eyebrows, sagging lids, fixed, startled expressions or frozen, expressionless faces have all been reported as a consequence of badly administered Botox.

Even celebrities can fall foul of the overused needle. Sir Cliff Richard admitted to using Botox then abandoning the treatment after his eyebrow seemed to drop.

A fixed expression or droopy eyebrow may be the least of your worries. Internet sites have sprung up cashing in on public demand for lasting youth and beauty and offering DIY Botox kits for less than half the price of a professional treatments.

The risks are obvious, needles being used by people with little medical, chemical or anatomical knowledge and the possibility of contaminated samples. In Florida a medical practitioner bought some Botox online and gave it to his relatives. Two ended up seriously ill in hospital and the practitioner was jailed for 15 years.

Dr Dhunna said: "People wanting Botox injections, for their own peace of mind, and more importantly for their own health, should check that the establishment they are attending is following the safety guidelines.

"At Cawston Manor Clinic all injectable treatments are administered personally by myself after a thorough consultation so clients know all best practice procedures are being observed."

<title>Access Legal calls for more help for Asbestos disease victims </title>
<description>Access Legal, consumer legal services provider from Shoosmiths, is calling for more to be done to help victims of mesothelioma, as it believes that not enough is being done to help sufferers of fatal asbestos-related diseases.

Access Legal wants to see more done to help victims of mesothelioma, an asbestos-linked cancer common in builders, plumbers, joiners, and teachers.

The call comes in the midst of a Health &amp; Safety Executive awareness-raising campaign aimed at those workers most at risk. Sara Hunt, associate and asbestos specialist at [Access legal from Shoosmiths|http://www.access-legal.co.uk/], said: "With some people already hit by this creeping disease, and with many others potentially at risk, not a lot seems to be getting done.

"There are calls for government funding for a national centre for asbestos related diseases, and a 24,000-signature petition was presented to 10 Downing Street last year, but there's been little positive reaction."

Hunt also believes Alimta - a drug that extends the life expectancy of mesothelioma sufferers - should remain available on the NHS. In 2007 the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) said the drug was not cost effective. However, following successful lobbying that decision was overturned, and Alimta was made available on the NHS. Now, that decision in turn is being challenged.

Hunt said: "If that challenge succeeds, suffers will no longer have NHS access to Alimta.

"Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer, and sufferers often have a very short life expectancy. Is it right to deny them access to a drug that may extend their life?"

Asbestos was used extensively as a building, insulating and fireproof material, particularly from the 1950s to 1980s. People exposed as long ago as 40 years might only now be developing asbestos-related conditions.

Asbestos remains in around 500,000 UK buildings, with people exposed when asbestos is disturbed and asbestos fibres become airborne. It can also be disturbed by pushing drawing pins into walls, and it is thought a single drawing pin can release 6,000 fibres. Mesothelioma can be caused by exposure to just one fibre.

Teaching unions are campaigning for asbestos to be removed from schools, after figures revealed 228 teachers died from asbestos-related diseases between 1991 and 2005.

Mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs and is a fatal illness. It is one of the least researched of the UK's top 20 cancers, despite claiming more than 2,000 lives each year in the UK. It is believed this figure will continue to rise, peaking in 2015.

<title>Are unpaid internships creating an elitist media profession? SourceThatJob.com's stand against exploitation reignites debate and garners industry support</title>
<description>SourceThatJob.com's recent decision to reject advertising from those recruiting people for unpaid internships has attracted strong support of many journalists and others in the media industry.

http://www.dwpubsporadic.com/2010/03/sourcethatjob-strikes-a-chord-over-media-internship-exploitation.html

The [media job site|http://www.sourcethatjob.com], which is a sister site of Daryl Willcox Publishing, made the move to take a stand against exploitation and the creation of an elitist media workforce.

SourceThatJob.com found that in the period since the economic downturn there had been a significant increase in the number of internships being offered.

'The majority of internships advertised are unpaid and can run from three months to an indefinite length; a time factor which may eliminate those who cannot afford to work for free from the media industry,' said Daryl Willcox, founder of SourceThatJob.com. 'We've attracted many positive comments supporting our stand. Obviously people have differing views, but it's reignited an important issue.'

Internships are nothing new and debate surrounding the ethics of recruiting for long-term stints of unpaid work has been ongoing for some time. But with the number of media jobs diminishing, it is now also becoming more difficult for prospective jobseekers to tell genuine opportunities from free labour.

Daryl Willcox continued: 'The noticeable rise in advertised positions requesting candidates for internships raises two questions: which opportunities are genuine, and as unpaid internships are often seen as essential to get into the media industry are companies only going to employ those that can afford to work for free? Media should represent society, yet the pressure of long-term unpaid work may mean that graduates with no financial support give up on a career in the industry.'

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ), of which Daryl Willcox is a member, writes that although there is a need for inexperienced journalists to gain experience, this 'internship culture has huge implications for diversity in the media, barring the profession to those who can't afford to work for free.'

In response to the December 2009 'Final Report of the Panel on Fair Access to the Professions,' a report commissioned to examine the issue of barriers and pathways to reaching professions for all people regardless of their background, the Government has introduced a kitemark system to highlight quality internships. <title>All Good Men Come With Big Packages. 3 in 5 Men Underestimate The Importance Of Size.</title>
<description>Does size matter? A basic Google search will give you over 70,000,000 possible sources to solve the debate, but a recent survey by Smooch.com shows that 64% of men underestimate the importance of size.

A basic Google search will give you over 70,000,000 possible sources to solve the debate, but a recent survey by Smooch.com shows that 64% of men underestimate the importance of size.

Over 4,000 members of the [free online dating|http://www.smooch.com] website Smooch.com were asked whether size really mattered. The data highlighted that 25% more women than men believed that size does matter.

Some may suggest that size does not matter within a loving, long-term relationship, but they'd be wrong. Surprisingly, women who were looking for romance and marriage online were the most size conscious. Whilst 50% of those looking for marriage and 47% of those looking or romance said that size did matter, those looking for 'fun' were the least concerned (40%) by the size.

Intriguingly, the results also appear to validate the theory that men who drive around in big flashy cars are over-compensating for something else. Men with a high-range salary were the most likely (45%) to believe that size does matter.

Smooch surveys are extremely detailed, incorporating information about its respondents as detailed as height, weight and education, allowing us to compile the ultimate man-ual to help men find their perfect fit:

Bigger is better for:

47% of red-heads
45% of slim women
44% of women with the starsign Gemini
43% of women aged 41-50
