Or do any of you have a shy child? It is becoming more and more apparent to me that my Maddie is genuinely shy. She is not socially awkward or anything - just truly shy. For example, if we arrive at the playground and there is even one other child there, she might say to me "Mommy, there's someone here. I don't want to play." After a little while she'll warm up though and play - especially if Hope or I go with her. She's a funny girl with a really great personality - not a bit withdrawn around us, but it takes her a long while to warm up to other people. Also, she does not like attention drawn to herself at all. If you try to compliment her by saying something like "that was very nice of you" or "you look nice today" or "thanks so much for doing that" she will tell you not to say anything, not to talk to her. "Don't say it" she'll tell me.

I just don't have any experience with this. Any advice? I'm wondering in what ways I should encourage her and in what ways not to press too hard. If you were shy or have a shy child, do you have any advice on how to be helpful to her or what to be careful of? Thanks.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/RestonMom/~4/BBLUb8rnjpg" height="1" width="1" />

In the archives of this blog you can find posts which testify to the crazy experiences we've had with our little starter fish tank. Here's the latest. We have been down to one fish for a while now - Twitchy, by name. The tank was turning green and gross again so I needed to clean it and proceeded to do so with care. I was very gentle with the fish and careful about timing and the water, following the directions of pet-store guy, but nonetheless about 10 minutes after returning Twitchy to his cleaner home, I found him motionless and floating belly up at the top of the water.

I relayed the bad news to the girls who took it pretty well. They decided that they really wanted to bury the fish in the yard and I gave in. So we headed upstairs with some tissue paper to wrap the little fish in. But, when I placed Twitchy on the paper he began to..well...twitch. So, I put the flapping little fish back into the tank (after a little effort to unstick his body from the tissue paper) - where he sank to the bottom. A short while later we decided to check on him again and found him laying completely on his side on the bottom of the tank. But, as Maddie so kindly pointed out, his mouth was moving ever so slightly. So, we decided to wait a little longer until he would finally and irreversibly kick the bucket.

Another short while later I hear Maddie calling from the top of the stairs "He's swimming around mom! Twitchy is swimming around!" Sure enough, like nothing ever happened. Wha?????

When I told Matt, he said to me - "don't you remember? don't you remember how Twitchy got his name?" Actually this is the second resurrection of Twitchy. This all happened the same once before, only that time he came back to us with a slight tilt to his swim and a tiny twitchiness - hence name.

My guess is that I've got the temperature in the tank still off or something and have now sent this poor creature into total shock twice - from which he has twice revived and survived to swim on among his glow-in-the-dark plastic plants.

Unfortunately, I have to say I was kind of looking forward to that fishy funeral. But he's a fighter, that Twitchy!

(by the way, if you are interested, I think Twitchy is some kind of Gourami fish)
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/RestonMom/~4/Wzmd9Nsimxs" height="1" width="1" />

She is one of those babies that will seek out the tiniest little speck on the carpet to pick up and put in her mouth. This drives me NUTS! and I have to vacuum all the time. But, if she happens to be playing on the carpet when I vacuum, she chases the vacuum! She loves it and tries to catch it, she's totally not afraid!

If one of my other girls happens to stub their toe or hurt themselves in such a manner as to cause them to shriek loudly and start crying - it sends Ami into the most hysterical fits of crying she ever displays. She starts screaming and heaving and crying with such intensity that you can feel her little heart pounding away and then once she finally calms down she has those post-crying sobs/heaves/hiccup things - you know that quick sucking in of air, that strange uncontrollable thing with the diaphragm. You can imagine what this does to me: one child crying hysterically because she is hurt, another screaming into my ear because she hears the other crying - it's an overwhelming cacophony of shrieking children!

I think it is pretty kid friendly as well as having whole grains, protein, no refined sugars and reduced fats. Refrigerate the leftovers for two days or freeze and defrost as needed.

SAUSAGE-CHEDDAR CORN MUFFINS

what you need:

1 C yellow cornmeal

1 C whole-wheat flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

2 eggs

1/2 C honey

2/3 milk (1% or 2%)

1 C chopped/crumbled cooked breakfast sausage (I like Jones All-Natural lite sausage links - no funny stuff, no nitrates/nitrites, precooked. The lite is made with the addition of brown rice. Find it in the freezer section. If you use the lite, just be forewarned that the sausage flavor will be pretty mild in the muffin. I actually like it better with the regular stuff, duh - more fat!)

1/2 C 2% reduced-fat cheddar cheese (I like to use small dices because you taste the cheese more, although you can just use shredded)

what to do:

preheat oven to 400 degrees. grease a muffin tin (don't use paper, these don't come out of the wrapper well) In one bowl, mix together the eggs, honey and milk. In a separate bowl, mix together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder and salt. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until just blended. Add the sausage and the cheese, mix again. Evenly distribute between cups of muffin tin. Bake until just beginning to turn golden and toothpick comes out clean (10-12 minutes?)
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/RestonMom/~4/NWmcDlvKf-A" height="1" width="1" />

If that wasn't clear enough, the blurb on the front highlighting the article contained within leaves no doubt about its stance.

The article, which focuses on Paul Offit (coinventor of a rotavirus vaccine) and also covers topics such as pseudoscience and fear, was in my opinion well written, interesting and personal. You get a ton of personal stories regarding people who are anti-vaccination in one form or another, but not a lot of personal stories surrounding someone in favor of vaccines.

Offit is quoted for saying regarding the issue of vaccination that it is currently "a pitched and heated battle." No matter how nice you try to play it, I have to agree. It's definitely a "hot topic" right now, getting more and more press all the time. I guess that isn't too surprising since parents can be some of the most deeply passionate and emotionally driven people. You might be surprised to hear, though, that Paul Offit has had several threats on his life and his family. Also, if you go to Wikipedia to read his bio, often as not, someone will have tampered with the page.

But Offit is just the tip of the article which has quite a bit to say. It's an interesting article, worth reading if you want to. You can read it here.

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/RestonMom/~4/9aaJymKWwJs" height="1" width="1" />
