Neo Noir Drug Abuse and Rapid Detox Extremes

One of the key scenes in Resurrection of Serious Rogers is the detox scene. This scene was actually taken from a previous short film that I wrote, directed and producer (and edited) called Renounced.

Renounced is about an addict who is on the verge of losing everything who tries an extreme and desperate rapid detox method to keep him wife from leaving him. The short film runs about 12 minutes. The scene in Resurrection of Serious Rogers (animated storyboard) runs about five minutes but is equally powerful.

Independent Action Thriller Nears Completion

Resurrection of Serious Rogers, the independent neo-noir action thriller written and directed by Angelo Bell is soon to be launched at a micro-site near you.

People all over the internet are already talking about Serious Rogers on Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. Production began in January 2010 and blossomed from spec web series to potential cable series and now theatrical distribution is a strong consideration. The film stars Cooper Harris and Mercedes Manning as Serious Rogers and Trixie, an odd couple thrown together and forced use their most primal survival instincts in a world with guns rule.

Resurrection of Serious Rogers was shot in and around Los Angeles including Studio City, Cerritos, and Alta Dena. It's most definitely a fan film, and as director Angelo Bell states, "We could have called this film, 'There Will Be Blood' because there's an awful lot of carnage in the film. But it's so much more than a typical blood & guts movie. Sure it has action, but it also has heart and drama." Thanks to the expert editing of co-producer and DP, Jim Rhodimer, Serious Rogers is going to blow the competition out of the water.

Resurrection of Serious Rogers also employed the services and talents of the indie community to help make the film, particularly the indie music community. The Watermarks, a Texas band, donated three rock tunes to help score the film and the thirty-second trailer. Left Outlet also donated two songs which were used in the film. Cesar Inserny (The Watermarks) and Gossip Grows on Trees donated t-shirts that were prominently used in the film. The haunting, energetic industrial rock original score for the film was written, scored, composed and mixed by Jon Pierre.

"My goal is to make films people want to see, not films I have to sell to the audience," says writer/director Angelo Bell. Angelo says he makes films that he personally enjoys but he doesn't forget that movies are made to be seen. "Genre films have a specialness that you don't find with traditional dramas or comedies. You have to treat them right and then the audience will treat you right."

When asked if he would pursue DIY distribution strategies Angelo remarked, "That's for the audience to decide, not me. I firmly believe that the most important tenet of filmmaking is to make a kick ass film first. The rest will be set in order naturally."

Angelo is the writer/director of 13 films including Broken Hearts Club, a raw relationship dramedy that screened at festivals in the U.K., Canada and Italy. The film will air as a series on NBC Universal in Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Chicago.

Angelo's goal as an independent director/producer is twofold: give the fans and the audience something special, and push himself creatively with each new project. His next project is the crowdfunded epic fantasy, Legend of Black Lotus which is different from Resurrection of Serious Rogers by leaps and bounds. Serious Rogers is like the Dark Side of the Force when compared to Broken Hearts Club.

The core of all of Angel's films is rooted in conflict and emotion. With this powerful foundation, he is able to craft stories and make movies in any genre to expand his audience and fanbase while staying true to his storytelling roots.

Changes Afoot

Now we gotta make the best of it, improvise, adapt to the environment, Darwin, shit happens, I Ching, whatever man, we gotta roll with it...

Filmmaking is about adapting. Changing. Rolling with the punches. Darwin. I Ching.
Due to time constraints we've lost our composer. I was excited about having this gentleman score the film because I like his style.

The good news is that there is already another composer who is eager to jump into the project. And he is good. One of his scores was conducted by...wait for it...John Williams.

He's got a very big sound to his scores so I'm working on fine-tuning it with edginess to see if this collaboration will work for the film.

In the meantime, I'm going to put out a call-to-arms, asking for Metal-y music from local bands who want their music in a film/web series.

Blood and Brains in the Marina

We jacked two locations in the Marina del Rey today while filming an important emotional but action-oriented scene. EMT paramedics stopped by to look closely when we a had Ted on the ground with a bloody gash in his head. Cool.

Jamming the Resurrection

We are jamming on the set of "Resurrection of Serious Rogers" We shot over 30 pages in 3 days. But what's important is that the footage looks good and the performances were strong. We didn't rush. We simply moved hastily ;-)

Yesterday we finally had Mercedes and Cooper on set at the same time. The chemistry I saw during the auditions was there. Both actresses posses incredibly natural talent. I think I maybe working with future superstars.

A Good Day For A Resurrection...

I'm still mostly typing one-handed since I fractured my wrist but to quote Ice Cube: today was a good day on the set of Resurrection of Serious Rogers.

On set today was Jamie Fishback, and Mercedes Manning returned to give it another, throat rested and ready to go. Despite the hovering police helicopter noise and some unruly commuters honking horns outside, we were able to shoot 11 pages of the script--in like five hours!

The icing on the cake was that the actors had rehearsed on their own prior to today. It showed. With a few little director tweaks the antagonistic chemisty I was looking for between the characters (Trixie and Agent Martin) was spot-on! Am I happy? Heck yeah.

Oh, and thanks to you, Mercedes' Mom for loaning us your daughter and her wonderful talent. We promise to return her in good shape and with her voice still intact.

Production Snafus and Good Luck

Today, on the set of Resurrection of Serious Rogers, we encountered our first production snafu, which actually turned out to be a benefit in the end.

Mercedes Manning was a trooper today. Still recovering from a bad cold, sore throat, ear infection and hoarseness, she showed up for work. After hearing her try to speak I had to make a decision. We were going to nix about 70% of what was scheduled for that day. Instead, we were going to focus on a very sexy and provocative entrance that Mercedes' character, Trixie, makes. It had to be beautiful. Classy. Innocent, but very sexy.

So we went to work. With no other actors on set (we rescheduled Jaime Fishback) we all worked together to block Trixie's entrance.

There's a torrential rain outside. Trixie enters, quickly, her jeans and shoes soaking wet. The camera is low and we can only see up to her knees.

Trixie kicks off her shoes, shimmies out of her wet jeans, flips the floor lamp on and plods down the long hallway to the bathroom where she snatches off her wet blouse and grabs a towel...

So we focused on those shots. Jim lit the hell outta it. Reed production designed the hell outta it. Mercedes acted the hell out of it. Sexy. Strong. But still innocent and old-fashioned.

Day Two - Production of "Serious Rogers"

We wrapped Day Two of Resurrection of Serious Rogers today. It was a short day and the rain worked to our favor. It came when we needed it to and cleared away when we no longer desired it.

At the last minute, or rather on my way to the set, I had an idea that would save time and travel to Downtown LA. Most of what we did today was totally guerrilla, so an attempt at guerrilla filmmaking downtown would inherently have more variables. Since we had a woman prancing around with Glock lookalike, it was also dangerous.

We shot three scenes, an emotional breakdown, a kill shot, and an assassination. We used the dolly, handheld shots and this cool contraption that looks like a steering wheel. The camera mounts to the center of the wheel and it's much better than a DV steadicam unit.

Tomorrow is a bigger day. Two locations. Two kills and we get to meet the Bad Ass Girls.

Oh, and I broke my wrist.

Resurrection of Serious Rogers - Journal: Day 1

JOURNAL-

Yesterday we wrapped "Resurrection of Serious Rogers" at 4:45PM. Not bad.

We shot in my home on the first day. We captured a meaningful emotional scene first thing, then we let Cooper Harris have some fun. She killed me. That is, I had a cameo role in the playing a blinged out bad dood.

It starting pouring rain while we were out at the park doing guerrilla shooting and I spent fifteen minutes lying in the cold wet grass with my face planted in the mud. Nice.

We moved back to my condo where the spectacular art direction team, Reed and Claudia had transformed my quaint little condo into a "heroin addict's bachelor pad." I remember looking at all the open cans of food and bottles and thinking, "Oh God, my wife is going to kill me." Yes... it was that scary.

Philip and Nancy were on set and in character. I've used my home eight time for films. Cinematically, it's never looked this good. Everyone had fun. Jim did an amazingly fast job of setting up lighting and shot selections. We got so much coverage it was ridiculous.

It was a good first day but we've got a long way to go.
