Latest Bushwick Art Fair Is a Bit of a Circus

Since it was announced that Bushwick Open Studios will be taking place in October and not on their usual summer date, a couple fledgling fests have tried to fill the void. There’s been the Bushwick Arts Festival, which was a bit of a letdown, and the Bushwick Galleries Association’s Hot Summer Nights of extended hours, which are great but for galleries only. So when we heard tell of a new Bushwick art festival called the Bushwick Open Art Fair, we were skeptical. What would make their “Bears on Bicycles”-themed fair different from the other upstarts? But then the organizers told us they’re “currently looking into the permits required to have live animals at the show.”

That’s right, Marina Reiter of the East Village’s Studio 26 Gallery and Doug Hollier of Bushwick’s New Apostle Gallery are taking the “Bears on Bicycles” theme for serious. And while they’re planning to throw the fair concurrent to BoS and not before (86 more sleeps!), we wanted to know more. (If only to bask in the irony that the year BoS reschedules in order to seem less circus-like, a circus-themed art fair attempts to ride its coattails.)

Reiter, an abstract foil painter originally from Moscow, and Hollier, a post-pop artist originally from England, are both practicing artists in Bushwick and have seen their fair share of… fairs. In fact, the last time we bumped into Hollier, whose murals grace the facades of various Brooklyn buildings, he was showing off his clever portraits of David Bowie and Iggy Pop at Select Fair. “We have a good knowledge of the international art fair scene and how it’s kind of developed over the last 10 years,” he told us more recently, adding that a fair is where he met Reiter last December– at Aqua Art Miami.

They’ve kept in touch since then, and while walking near Hollier’s Starr Street home one night, remarked that the defunct window frame manufacturing building across the street would make for a fine art fair venue. “That’s how the idea got started,” said Hollier. Then in another conversation– Hollier doesn’t know how they got on the subject– Reiter mentioned that circuses in China and Russia still have performing bears on bicycles. “So we came up with the idea of calling it ‘Bears on Bicycles’ and giving it sort of a circus extravaganza theme,” he said. The art needn’t be circus-themed, but there will be circus decor and they’re in talks with several performance houses and individual performance artists.

“Although Bushwick has got a big visual arts scene it’s also got a very established performing arts scene. A lot of that is straight-up circus-style stuff,” explained Hollier. Reiter added: “If you go to a lot of performing venues in Bushwick, you come across a lot of carnival scenes, performances, burlesque. This is everything that comes to mind when you mention ‘Bushwick performing arts.’ So we thought that would be a really good idea for the first inaugural edition of the art fair, that kind of embodies the Bushwick performing arts atmosphere.” Not to mention Hollier is a bit of a Barnum & Bailey history buff, regaling us with how up until the ’50s, the “Greatest Show on Earth” stopped its big tops near Myrtle/Wyckoff. He’s also “personally fascinated by [P.T. Barnum’s] originally advertising strategies.” Erego the live animal permit enquiries.

Hollier said the inspirational window manufacturing building has been promised to a wall-climbing gym developer, but they found an approximately 20,000-square-foot former commercial/industrial facility between the Morgan and Jefferson L train stops. They launched their website Friday, are now accepting exhibitor applications, and are hoping to see submissions from both New York and international galleries. “We want to engage the blue chip galleries, but instead of showing just the typical expo-style convention center model, we want to incorporate the Bushwick scene,” said Reiter, with Hollier adding that “that’s the kind of key point. It’s giving international blue chip galleries the opportunity to present their artists’ work in the current avant-garde Bushwick scene, and creating a Bushwick theme that they’re not going to get in Switzerland, they’re not going to get in Asia, they’re only going to get it in Bushwick.”

According to a press release, “Bears on Bicycles” will commence with an invitation-only VIP Preview Extravaganza on Thursday, September 29th at 3 pm. The VIP Preview Extravaganza will run until 6 pm, at which time the art fair will open to the public. The fair is slated to run through Sunday, October 2nd.

DS Pollack, a Performance Artist, spends extended periods of time studying his characters. Often living in their homes and wearing their clothing. It has become a ritualistic part of his method acting technique. The Performance Art Itself comes in any form, whether it is one on one, online chat, live and/or recorded video or audio. Pollack adds to genres of Performance Art and Net Art the dimensions of the "social network" and the possibility that humans can be anyone they choose to be.

This topic of using multiple identities and alters has become a vital point in the cloud computing security lexicon. Causing many to question Pollack's motives, often calling his work 'identity-fraud' and a 'violation of corporate policy'. Yet, as it stands, the ability for an Artist to create a character, "IS" freedom of speech and if a 'Corporate Policies' are in truth violating people's first amendment rights. then this work has served a very valid purpose. The protection of Freedom of Expression, Speech and the Net Art.

Just like Seth Siegelaub was to Conceptual Art and Artists. And how we now realize his exhibition and influence make him one of the greatest conceptual artists of his time. Perhaps the Art bloggers and their blogs are in fact creating the most pertinent art of our time.

That's exactly the way I create my work and Art. I also believe that you, Paddy Johnson are, or at least have the ability to be, the Seth Siegelaub of our time. Take that as you will. However, to me Art is in everything we create. The digital critic holds immense power. Those bold enough to state, that what they create, "is Art" are the "now".

There is, and will forever be, a contradiction in any contemporary art movement. Particularly when it comes to New Media, Conceptual and Performance Art. Just realize, that mere existence of contrasting perspectives is exactly how we can tell where Art lives.

Chase Alias questions the reality of identity, inspecting his own existence. Alias understands himself to be a character manufactured as a "Vessel". A machine that drives Ideas, intentionally littering the Art world’s site-maps. Drawn out, by the artist, for his canon, in advance.

The Argument between Free Will and Determinism becomes truly complex. The Goal of Alterism and this new form of Techno-Dada is altruistic in nature. The Performance Artist (Alterist) Exists as the Art, as an example of the “Emergent System”.

Cyber and actual space/time creates so many barriers. The ability to create one's own existence as Art has become an Imperative. If society is to maintain stability of culture and freedom of speech.

If you have something to say and fear persecution you could "Remain Anonymous" . However, It may be more effective to create your own "chasealias". It exemplifies creativity all while protecting your right to free speech. @TheorizeArt

**Look Very Carefully. While this may seem like a simple snapshot. I assure you, It's is has much greater depth. In fact. Take the time to watch the pixels very closely. The process is based on an Algorithm from the Automated Animator Project and it is One of my Favorite MHDR Finished Works of Art. MHDR is Motion High Dynamic Range. Chase is an Immersionist character. Immersionism is a form of gonzo journalism made famous by Hunter S Thompson in his works such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Immersion Journalism or Immersionism is a style of journalism similar to gonzo journalism. In the style, journalists immerse themselves in a situation and with the people involved. The final product tends to focus on the experience, not the writer.

So what is it about Ai? What makes him, in Western eyes, the world’s “most powerful artist”? The answer lies in the West itself. Now obsessed with China, the West would surely invent Ai if he didn’t already exist. China may after all become the most powerful nation in the world. It must therefore have an artist of comparable consequence to hold up a mirror both to China’s failings and its potential. Ai (his name is pronounced eye way-way) is perfect for the part. Having spent his formative years as an artist in New York in the 1980s, when Warhol was a god and conceptual and performance art were dominant, he knows how to combine his life and art into a daring and politically charged performance that helps define how we see modern China. Why not?

If you believe in the word creativity then you must understand that it takes the same creative energy to create an object d'art or ready made. The issue is in the contradiction of believing one can own a moment of creation, which is merely a memory.

A different concept in travel writing, photography and Criticism for our new ReTweet Critique Domain and App Revamp. The idea of using Immersion Journalism or Gonzo style to test the service industry. The Hudson hotel in Midtown New York did Moderately well.

Of the five hotels we checked there were a couple surprises both good and bad. The "OUT'' is totally not worth checking in. For a hotel that bills itself as for Gay by Gay the manager was very rude and almost seemed to be discriminating against me. Imagine that.

Remembrance

On April 24, 2010 at 00:51, Ai Weiwei (@aiww) started a Twitter campaign to commemorate  students who perished in the earthquake in  Sichuan on May 12, 2008. 3,444 friends from the Internet delivered voice recordings, the names of 5,205 perished were recited 12,140 times.

“Remembrance” is an audio work dedicated to the young people who lost their lives in the Sichuan earthquake. It expresses thoughts for the passing of innocent lives and indignation for the cover-ups on truths about sub-standard architecture, which led to the large number of schools that collapsed during the earthquake.
