Who is Reverend Moon?

Nearly everyone has read or heard something about the founder of the Unification Church , Reverend Sun Myung Moon. Some media reports have portrayed Reverend Moon as a businessman or politician. Others have recognized him to be an extraordinarily dedicated religious leader. Who is Reverend Moon? Our answer begins with an account of his upbringing, and an encounter he had with Jesus on a Korean mountainside.

Sun Myung Moon was born on January 6, 1920, into a family of farmers that had tilled the land for centuries. As a boy he studied at a Confucian school and was a keen observer of the ntural world.
Around 1930, his parents became fervent Christians - Presbyterians, and the young Sun Myung Moon became a Sunday school teacher.

At that time, Japan ruled Korea and only permitted practice of the Shinto religion. The religious intolerance of the militant Japanese was only a small part of the contempt they held for the Koreans, a race they believed to be inferior. The Korean people were subjected to forty years of humiliation and cruelty as part of Japan 's Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere. As a member of an oppressed race, Sun Myung Moon learned to hate injustice, whether among his own people or at the hands of the Japanese rulers.

Korea is a land of fervent Christian faith. Today it is well known that Korea is home to the largest Protestant churches in the world. When Reverend Billy Graham visited Korea , he was so impressed by the spiritual vitality of her churches that he predicted one day Korea would send missionaries to revive the West. Before World War II, the center of Christian activity was Pyongyang , which was called the " Jerusalem of the East." Among the spirit-filled churches were many with strong messianic expectations. These churches had received revelations that the Messiah would be born in Korea , and they were directed in various ways to prepare to receive him.

Encounter with Jesus

At Easter time in 1935, Jesus appeared to the young Sun Myung Moon as he was praying in the Korean mountains. In that vision, Jesus asked him to continue the work which he had begun on earth nearly 2,000 years before. Jesus asked him to complete the task of establishing God's kingdom on earth and bringing His peace to humankind.

The young Korean was stunned by this encounter, and especially by the request that had been made of him, and at first he refused. However, after deep reflection, meditation and prayer, he pledged his life to that overwhelming mission.

After personally accepting Jesus' call, the young man set out to discover its very meaning. If Jesus called him to complete his mission, it meant that Jesus' mission was incomplete. Was not salvation through the cross all that man needs? What was it that Jesus had left undone on earth? If sin is not completely solved, then what is the actual root of sin?

Man of God

Sun Myung Moon studied the Bible and many other religious teachings in order to unravel these mysteries of life and human history. During this time, he went into ever deeper communion with God and entered the vast battlefield of the spirit and flesh. Through denying his personal desires he overcame temptations of knowledge, wealth and physical pleasure. He came to understand God's own suffering and His longing to be reunited with His children. He learned the difficult steps that humankind would have to take in order to return to God and establish true peace on earth.

By 1945, he had organized the teachings which came to be known as the Divine Principle, and he began his public ministry. The Divine Principle, the fundamental teaching of Reverend Moon and the Unification Church .

Reverend Moon, now 88 years old, has been falsely imprisoned 6 times throughout his lifetime. During these times he always prayed for those who persecuted him and asked that they be forgiven. He also prayed to comfort the heart of God. Even during these times he directed his followers to reach out to others with truth and love. In spite of suffering, misunderstanding and hardship, he never ceased to hold fast the vision of the ideal world that God has longed for since the beginning of time. Even now he works tirelessly traveling all over the world to inspire others from vastly different backgrounds and cultures to dedicate their lives to build the Kingdom of God on Earth. Reverend Sun Myung Moon Speaks in Nigeria at Historical Peace Conference

Dr. Sun Myung Moon, revered as a peacemaker by millions worldwide, will be the keynote speaker at a meeting of African diplomats and political, religious and civil society leaders across the Continent at a conference sponsored by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) on July 17, 2011 in Abuja, the Nigerian Capital.

The program in Abuja, the eleventh city of Dr. and Mrs. Moon's 2011 World Tour, begins July 15th with an International Leadership Conference, which will consider some of the major challenges and opportunities facing Nigeria and all of Africa in the decade to come, including health, food and agriculture, good governance and the need for interreligious cooperation and unity among Africa’s many different faiths and traditions.

Organizers tell Familyfed.org that 3,000 people from throughout Africa are expected to attend Father Moon’s speech at the Abuja Conference Center, as well as large delegations from Europe, Korea, Japan, and the United States.

Dr. Hyung Jin Moon, the UPF International Chairman, will be the keynote speaker at the conference’s opening plenary session on July 16th, and Rev. In Jin Moon, President and CEO of HSA-UWC in the United States, is also expected to provide welcoming remarks.

In a separate program, the Lovin’ Life Ministries Sunday service will be held for the first time in Nigeria on the morning of July 17, 2011. More than 500 members from around the continent of Africa are eagerly looking forward to attending the service, which will feature Rev. The president of Better Future Foundation (BFF), Rev. Augustine Arkoi, leaves the country today for Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria, to participate in an international leadership conference.

Organized by Universal Peace Federation (UPF), the conference would be attended by an array of international peace ambassadors from Asia, Middle East, Europe, Africa and the Americas.

The conference which would be addressed by UPF Founder, Dr. Sun Myung Moon, a global campaigner for World Peace and Unity would be held in the Nigerian political capital from July 15-18, 2011. Dr. Sun Myung Moon is invited by Nigeria current acting president, Goodluck Jonathan as a state guest.

Dr. Moon’s address would be delivered on July 17, 2011. The visit of the global peace campaigner to Nigeria to address the ILC is part of his tour of many nations in 2011, spreading massages of peace and understanding. At least three thousand delegates from around the world including high level representatives from each of Africa’s 53 states including Liberia have been invited to the conference in Abuja. Delegates are also expected to come from the African diasporas and World War II nations respectively.

Dr. Kook Jin Moon, Chairman of Tongil Foundation, gave a peace address to 70 Malaysian congressmen on the evening of June 19, in Kuala Lumpur. His speech was titled “Business Engine for Global Peace.”

There were about 130 participants, including Ronald Kianbee, Vice Speaker of the House. A welcoming greeting was given by Chua Soon Bui, Malaysian congressman, and a Keynote address by Seri Panglima Pandikar Amin Haji Mulia (read by Ronald Kianbee), Speaker of the House.

After an introduction by Thomas Walsh, Dr. Kook Jin Moon spoke. “My father, Dr. Rev. Sun Myung Moon, is the conduit for all people to inherit the True Love that is God’s divine essence,” he said. “Also as Savior and Messiah, he is making effort to make a peace world. With my Father’s teaching, the Unification Church World Headquarters Church in central Seoul has a special room to honor the prophet Mohammad, Jesus, Buddha and Confucius, whom we refer to as the Four Great Saints. Religions have power that can lead humankind to the direction of goodness. Let’s make a peaceful world through unity of religions.” Dr. Moon received a big applause from the Malaysian congressmen.

Dr. In Jin Moon, President and CEO of HSA-UWC USA, next gave a greeting address to the attendees. Her speech was followed by a Peace Toast by Ooi Chuan Aun, Malaysian congressman, and a Peace Declaration by all the participants.

Even though Islam is the state religion in Malaysia, religious freedom is guaranteed under the constitution. Also, 60 percent of Malaysians are Muslim, yet the Malaysian congressmen are very interested in the unity of religions and inter-religious activities by the Unification Church.

Last year, 40 Malaysian congressmen attended the 90th birthday of Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

The next day, June 20, 2011, Dr. Kook Jin Moon met with Seri Panglima Pandikar Amin Bin Haji Mulia, Speaker of the House and gave a special address at the Regional Peace Conference organized by the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).

Deputy Speaker YB Datuk Ronald Kiandee, representing the Speaker of the House, members of the Parliament of Malaysia, Ambassadors for Peace, Ladies and Gentlemen:

On behalf of my parents, Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, as well as my sister, Rev. In Jin Moon and myself, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your invitation to visit your wonderful country and speak here today.

I have long admired Malaysia as a moderate Muslim country where Islam exists in harmony with other religions. I believe that the invitations extended to my parents, who are religious leaders known throughout the world for their emphasis on harmony among religions, give clear evidence to this admirable aspect of Malaysian society.

Prime Minister Najib Razak in his address to the United Nations last autumn called for a “Global Movement of the Moderates” of all religions to combat religious extremism. The Prime Minister’s effort, which he repeated at the University of Oxford just last month, is very much in keeping with the teachings of my father and deserves the support of religious persons everywhere.

My father was born in 1920 in what is now North Korea. He was raised in a Christian home and met Jesus in a vision when he was 15 years old. In the public ministry that he began in 1945 and continues to this day at age 91, my father teaches that all religions have the mission to liberate humankind from the spiritual ignorance that results from our separation from God. He teaches that religions should work in harmony with each other to accomplish this task.

In Christian terms, we refer to my father as “Messiah,” “Savior” and the “returning Christ.” But he does not come for the sake of Christians alone. Nor does he consider it his mission to propagate the Christian faith to the exclusion of other religions.

Instead, my father is the conduit for all people to inherit the True Love that is God’s divine essence. This is how we become the true sons and daughters of God. My father teaches that God’s true love can and should be inherited by people in all religious traditions, and that all religions can achieve their ideals of unity and peace by deepening their understanding of God.

I would like to read a passage from my father’s autobiography to give you a better idea of his approach to religious harmony and peace.This autobiography was originally published in Korea in 2009 and has sold well over a million copies. The Japanese translation has also sold more than a million copies.

Today, I will read from the English translation, titled, As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen. The section I will read is on pages 234 to 244 and is titled, “The Power of Religion to Turn People to Goodness.” The passage has been edited slightly in the interest of time. Please refer to the book for the complete text.

The Peace King

“On August 2, 1990, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein staged an armed invasion of Kuwait, igniting the possibility of war in the Persian Gulf. This area has long been a tinderbox, and I could see that the world was about to be swept up in the vortex of war. I concluded that Christian and Muslim leaders must meet to stop the conflict. I acted immediately to do everything I could to stop a war in which innocent people were sure to die.

“On October 2nd of the same year, I convened on short notice an emergency conference of the Council for the World’s Religions in Cairo, Egypt, to deliver my urgent message of peace to the highest spiritual authorities of the Middle East and the Muslim world. Many wondered why I, a person with no apparent ties to the Middle East, would convene such a meeting, but to me it is simple. I believe every religion should contribute to world peace. A conflict between Christianity and Islam would be far worse than the conflict between democracy and communism. There is nothing more fearful than religious war.

“I sent a message imploring President George H.W. Bush, who already was trying to limit the conflict, to avoid war in the Arab world, and instead work to bring about Saddam Hussein’s retreat through diplomatic means.

“Our emergency conference in Cairo involved top Muslim leaders and grand muftis from nine countries, including representatives of the grand muftis of Syria and Yemen. At the core of the meeting was my desperate appeal to the Arab and Muslim world not to support Saddam Hussein’s claim that this was a holy war. Whether the United States won or Iraq won, what good would it do? What value would it have if it meant that bombs rained down, destroying houses, fields, hills, and precious innocent lives?

“The Cairo conference was just one of our many peace activities. On September 11, 2001, we all felt utter horror when the World Trade Center twin towers in New York City were destroyed by terrorists. Some people said this was the inevitable clash of civilizations between Islam and Christianity. But my view is different. In their purest form, Islam and Christianity are not religions of conflict and confrontation. They both place importance on peace. In my view, it is bigoted to brand all Islam as radical, just as it is bigoted to say that Islam and Christianity are fundamentally different. The essence of all religions is the same.

“Immediately following the collapse of the towers, I organized religious leaders from New York and around the country to pray and minister to the victims and first responders at Ground Zero. Then, in October, I convened a major interfaith conference for peace in New York City. Ours was the first international gathering in New York after the tragedy.

“These dramatic contributions to peace in times of war did not spring up from nothing. For decades prior, I had invested in promoting interreligious harmony.

“In 1984, I brought together forty religious scholars, instructing them to compare the teachings that appear in the sacred texts of Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and other major world religions. The book that resulted from their efforts was World Scripture: A Comparative Anthology of Sacred Texts, published in 1991. What they found was that the sacred texts of religions convey the same or similar teachings more than seventy percent of the time. The remaining thirty percent are teachings that represent unique points of each religion. This means that most of the teachings of the major world religions are the same at their core. The same is true of religious practice. On the surface, some believers wear turbans, some wear prayer beads around their necks, others wear a cross, but they all seek the fundamental truths of the universe and try to understand the will of the Divine One.

“People often become friends even if all they have in common is the same particular hobby. When two strangers meet and discover they have the same hometown, they can immediately communicate as if they had known each other for decades. So, it is truly tragic that religions, which share the same teachings more than seventy percent of the time, still struggle to understand each other and communicate happily. They could talk about the things they have in common and take each other by the hand. Instead, they emphasize their differences and criticize one another.

“Our experience when compiling World Scripture leads us to believe that it is not the religions of the world that are in error but the ways the faiths are taught. Bad teaching of faith brings prejudice, and prejudice leads to conflict. Muslims were branded terrorists after the 9/11 attack. But the vast majority of simple, believing families are peace-loving people.

“Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are sharply divided against each other in today’s world, but they share a common root. One of the main issues that keep them divided is their understanding of Jesus. To address this problem, on May 19, 2003, I asked that Christians de-emphasize the cross in relations among the Abrahamic faiths. Thus, we enacted a ceremony of taking down the cross. We brought a cross from America, a predominantly Christian culture, and buried it in the Field of Blood in Israel. This is the field that was bought with the thirty pieces of silver that Judas Iscariot received for the betrayal of Jesus.

“Later that year, on December 23, some three thousand Ambassadors for Peace from all religions, and from around the world, joined with seventeen thousand Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem’s Independence Park to symbolically remove the crown of thorns from the head of Jesus and replace it with a crown of peace.

“They then marched for peace through Jerusalem. Local authorities granted permissions and protected our efforts, and Palestinian and Israeli families supported our march for peace by placing a light in front of their homes. Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest mosque in Islam after those in Mecca and Medina, is located in Jerusalem. It is the spot from which the Prophet Mohammad is said to have ascended to heaven.

“Ours was the only mixed religious group welcomed to all parts of this house of worship. The mosque leaders guided the Christian and Jewish leaders who had participated in the peace march to the sacred spaces of the mosque. We were able to open a door that had been closed tightly, and prepared the way for many Muslim leaders to communicate at a new level with their Christian and Jewish brothers and sisters.

“Human beings like peace, but they also enjoy conflict. Human beings will take the most gentle of animals and make them fight. They will have roosters fight and peck each other with their sharp beaks until pieces of soft flesh begin to fall away. Then, people will turn around and tell their children, ‘Don’t fight with your friends. Play nice.’ The fundamental reason that wars occur is not religion or race. It is connected to what lies deep inside human beings.

“People like to attribute the causes of armed conflicts to such things as science or the economy, but the actual fundamental problem lies within human beings ourselves. Religion’s role is to turn human beings toward goodness and eliminate their evil nature that finds enjoyment in fighting.

“Examine the major religions of the world. They all hold a peaceful world as their ideal. They all want to see a kingdom of heaven, utopia, or paradise. Religions have different names for this ideal, but they all seek such a world. There are numerous religions in the world, and virtually every one is divided into countless factions and denominations. But the essential hope for all is the same: They want the Kingdom of Heaven and a world of peace. The human heart has been torn to shreds by the violence and enmity at our core.

“The kingdom of love will heal it. The greatest obstacle to the world of peace is avarice in peoples’ hearts. It starts in individuals and expands to the nation, and thearts stained with avarice cause division and conflict at every level. Countless people throughout history have shed their blood and died in conflicts caused by avarice.

“To eliminate such conflicts, we need a great revolution to change the erroneous values and thinking that are widespread in the world today. The complex problems our societies face today can be resolved quickly if there is a revolution in peoples’ thinking. If each individual and nation begins to look out for the other first -- working together with the other, the problems of modern society will be resolved.

“Throughout my life, I dedicated myself to efforts for peace. Whenever peace is discussed, I become emotional. Tears begin to well up in my eyes, my voice chokes, and I can hardly swallow. It moves me deeply just to imagine the day when the world becomes one and begins to enjoy peace. That is the nature of peace. It links people who think differently, are of different races, and speak different languages. Our hearts yearn for this world and harbor a hope that it will be realized. However, peace comes through concrete action, and not just having a vague dream. But building a movement for peace has not always been easy. There have been many difficulties, and it has required large sums of money. I have not done this for my own honor, or to make money.

“All I did was invest my full effort, so that we can have a world where a strong and true peace takes root. For as long as I have been doing this work, I have never been lonely. This is because, ultimately, peace is the desire of every person in the world. It is strange, though. Everyone wants peace, but still it has not come. Each religion today thinks of itself as the highest, rejecting and looking down on other religions. It is not right to build fences against other religions and denominations.

“A religion is like a wide river flowing toward an ideal, peaceful world. The river flows for long distances before it comes to the wide expanse of peace. On its way, many streams flow into it. The streams cease to be streams from the point they meet the river. From that point, they, too, become part of the river. In this way, they become one. The river does not reject any of the streams that flow into it. It accepts them all. It embraces all the streams and forms a single flow as it continues toward the ocean. People in the world today do not understand this simple truth. The streams that seek out the river and flow into it are the numerous religions and denominations of today.

“Each stream traces its origin to a different spring, but they are all going to the same destination. They are seeking the ideal world overflowing with peace. Peace will never come to this earth unless we first tear down the walls between religions. For thousands of years, religions have grown in alliance with particular ethnic groups, so they are surrounded by high cultural walls. Tearing these down is an extremely difficult task. For thousands of years, each religion has surrounded itself with such high walls, insisting that it is the only correct religion. In some cases, religions have expanded their influence and entered into conflicts and fights with other religions, using God’s name in places that had nothing to do with His will. The will of God lies in peace.

“A world fragmented by differences in nationality, race, and religion, where people attack and fight one another and shed one another’s blood, is not what God wants. When we shed blood and fight each other in His name, we only causeHim pain. A world torn to shreds has been created out of the desires of people to promote their own wealth and glory. It does not represent the will of God. God clearly told me so. I am only His errand boy, receiving His words and carrying them out on Earth.

“There are close to two hundred countries in the world. For all these countries to enjoy peace, the power of religion is absolutely necessary. The power of religion is in the love that overflows from it. I am a religious person whose role is to convey love, so it is natural that I would work for world peace. There is no difference between Islam and Christianity in their commitment to bring about a world of peace.

“In America, I lead a movement for peace, bringing together thousands of clergy who transcend denomination. Through this movement, we discuss ways that people of all faiths – Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, etc. – can come together. We devote our full efforts to change the hardened hearts of people. My purpose is the same today as it was yesterday. It is to create one world with God at the center, a world brought together like a single nation without boundaries. All humanity will be citizens of this world, sharing a culture of love. In such a world, there will be no possibility for division and conflict. This will mark the beginning of a truly peaceful world.”

Those are the words of my father. My father has put tremendous energy and resources into bringing harmony among the world’s religions. He was worked tirelessly to inspire all religious people to deepen their understanding of God’s divine essence. He believes that the walls that separate the major religious traditions today will crumble when the people in these traditions inherit the true love of God. When that happens, religious people can unite in harmony and lead the way toward a world of peace.

Many people are surprised on visiting the Unification Church World Headquarters Church in central Seoul to find that we have a special room to honor the prophet Mohammad, Jesus, Buddha and Confucius, whom we refer to as the Four Great Saints. The Unification Church maintains friendly relations with the major orders of Korean Buddhism. The leaders of both faiths regularly attend each other’s religious events.

There are conflicts in every country. The fundamental causes of these conflicts lie in the hearts of the people. It is the responsibility of religions to remove that cause, but religions cannot do that unless they inherit God’s true love and relate to each other in harmony. Malaysia is showing the world a model for religious harmony, and I look forward to seeing your continued development in this area.

The invisible love is the greatest among all kinds of love. It would be no fun at all if love were visible. Since love is invisible, it can be the highest, widest, and deepest. Some say love is like the Rocky Mountains or like the Niagara Falls. Those are correct similes. The invisible God is precious because invisible love is precious. It is true that we have to enter the state of the complete absence of ego in order to find God. God lives deeply and quietly in the invisible world rather than in the visible world where we live.

I became aware of what true love and happiness are through nature. It was from the natural world that I could learn the most basic things, more than from education in school. When the seasons changed and I saw a beautiful bird flying, I followed the bird and watched to see how it built its nest and lived. There were times when I walked around for more than ten days to see a bird lay eggs and hatch them. I became deeply convinced of God's mystery and love by looking at the cute and beautiful birds... Birds are made to be hatched through the warmth of their parent's body and their parental love. I once picked up a baby bird and decided to raise it sincerely. Although I took the baby bird secretly, the mother bird cried whenever she saw me. I understood that it was crying, pleading to have her baby back. Mother's love in the bird's world is also very strong. When someone comes and tries to take away the baby bird, the parents try to protect it, even risking their own lives.

When we reach adolescence, our mind and body start searching for love. We walk around without even listening to the words of our parents. The eyes of the mind and the eyes of the body unite into one and move around. If we have a nose of love, we may come to like the smell which we usually dislike. We want to listen to love stories all night long. Once you touch your object of love, you don't want to stop. Therefore, if you are invaded by the feeling of love during your adolescence, your eyes turn strange and everything seems wonderful to you. When your mind and body unite and you fire a love gun, the bullet would be shot right into your partner's heart. Those of you who wish to have this kind of man's love or woman's love, please raise your hand. There is nothing love cannot digest. Love can eat and digest everything. If you have true love, no matter how ugly a man is, he will look handsome to you. Love is incredible. Therefore, whether good or bad, men and women can never forget the first love they experienced during their adolescence.

The perfection of man and woman's love is the perfection of the universe. When this love is broken, the order of the universe and the vertical world are destroyed.

Intense first love, done in a rightful and honorable way, comes together and creates a beautiful and powerful spark. The love of God will spark with that love and it becomes the best, most extraordinary spark in Heaven. The impact of that spark is so strong that it flattens you to the ground. Yet still you feel joyful, even knocked to the ground, because of the impact of love.

The first spark of true love is so important and it should not be misused. Once that intense first spark of true love is misused, it is very difficult to completely unwind that mistake. Each person has the duty to preserve his pure first love until the time when it can spark for the sake of the universe and for God. Therefore, you should not behave in a casual way toward your love. True love is noble and sacred; it is not vulgar or dirty, although the sacredness of love can be defiled if it is misused.

When is a person in full bloom? It is during young adulthood. This age is the seven-year period from the age of eighteen to twenty-five. This period of seven years is the time when the flower of love blossoms the most. How precious is this once-in-a-lifetime period when one is fully blooming! You all know the peony (magnolia), don't you? The bud of this flower has a different-colored yellow flower inside. How many layers of petals does it have? The petals are all tightly wound together on the flower. Can you push them open? They are tightly coiled so that it cannot be easily opened up. Men and women are similar to this. When is your bud of love going to blossom? That time is when beauty is manifested to the greatest degree.

You should not ruin your purity during your adolescence, which is the precious time when you cleanse and indemnify the purity lost by Adam and Eve during their youth. You should preserve your purity, precious and clean, and you should have the mind and the determination that "even if I have to live a thousand or ten thousand years alone, my love will absolutely never be misused."

Even to the most beautiful girl, adolescence only comes once. During that time, she is the most beautiful flower of all, and it is the most precious time for her in her entire lifetime. So would a girl think, "I want to live alone"? Such a person is not a woman. Does such an animal exist? Also, among men who look very good at the age around sixteen, would any of them say he wants to live alone? At this time they all start to look for a reciprocal partner. Whom do they resemble that makes them this way? They are this way because they resemble God. If God is not like this, how can His children be like this? It is because God is like that. During adolescence, which is the most precious time in one's life, the desire to seek a partner is the same in man and woman. Is it so, or not? If you think it's not, go ahead and age and die alone. Try saying to a beautiful woman, "Beautiful women are said to be unfortunate. A beautiful person like you should age and die alone." Even a quiet beautiful woman would really get mad. Nothing worse can be said to a person. This beautiful woman will have value only when there is a man who appreciates her completely and connects her to heavenly love.

In giving of the love of God to other people, you are sharing your love with them. Then your love, rather than being diminished, will be multiplied. You will be proud of what you have given. Only by giving can we receive. So we want to give of our whole being. We want to give of our family, our clan, our nation, and our whole world to God. In return He will fill our hearts with such love that we can embrace the whole world and the whole cosmos.

Respect all things as holy things. Respect all men as holy men. Respect yourself as a holy person. Respect your mind as holy. Respect your body as holy. Pay deep respect to all people, no matter what kind of person they may be.

When we think that the people who have divorced or are willing to divorce are all people who once were in a love relationship of life and death, we must say that something has gone wrong. There may be many reasons to get divorced, but in general it means that something changed, that something became different between the two. This is because they could not keep and grow their love. Love itself does not change; it is the person's mind that changes.

We first get married thinking that the man is handsome. But one week later, if an accident happens and the husband's body is paralyzed, it is not true love to call for a divorce. That is false love.

You will be in trouble if you try to rush the experience of love. The feeling of being intoxicated by love and becoming happy is like a preview of what is to come when the time is right for the gate of love to open... The gate should proudly open when you have become the master of love.

Achieving the highest ideal of human love is possible only when one takes responsibility for love. We can think of this responsibility in three ways. The first responsibility is for one to become the master of true love, truly free and thanking God for the freedom of love and knowing how to cultivate and control oneself. This responsibility for a love relationship should not be taken merely because of law or social convention. Instead, a person should establish responsibility through his own self-control within the life-committing vertical relationship with God.

Second is one's responsibility toward the object of love. By nature, people do not want their spouse's love to be shared with others. Horizontal conjugal love, which differs from the vertical love between parents and children, loses its potential for perfection the moment it is divided. This is because the principle of creation requires husband and wife to become one in absolute love. Each spouse has the responsibility given by love to live absolutely for the sake of the other.

The third responsibility of love is toward children. The love of parents is the basis for children's pride and happiness. They would wish to be born through the total and harmonious unity of their parents in true love, and they would wish to be raised in that kind of love. The most precious responsibility of parents is not only to rear their children externally, but also to offer them life elements of true love that can perfect their spirituality. That is why the family is so valuable.

Recently, we see people here and there making love as if they were making instant food. This is a problem. This is like trying to deepen love by taking a perfume bath. I would say that love is deepened, purified, and lasts longer when a couple living in the countryside take a cold bath and sleep together.

When we look at recent generations, we can say that calculating, artificial and deceitful love is so widespread that it confuses our concept of what human happiness is. We can say that this kind of love is the main criminal leading this world to destruction.

Marriage can be said to be a ceremony which allows you to open the door of a palace of happiness and enter into it. Therefore, marriage is the biggest event for humankind. Love transcends time and space and it is the greatest thing for humankind. Marriage is a ceremony that reveals and confirms this greatest love.

If there were no marriage, then what is called love would not have started in the human world. Who is the master of that love? We must know that the master is not man or woman, but God. When God's love is manifested in us, it becomes God's joy and pride, and we are able to feel this as God's love. Love cannot be realized alone; it is only realized through a reciprocal relationship. Therefore, when man tries to realize love, he cannot do it by himself alone. The same can be said about woman. When Adam and Eve unite through love, they are able to receive God's love for the first time. From this viewpoint, we can understand that we human beings are born from God.

Unificationism is a contemporary movement with a special philosophy, theology and sociology which is spreading quite rapidly throughout the world. The movement has for its purpose the unity of all theists in order to form a more consolidated front against secular humanism in a time of rapidly disappearing religious ideals. In addition, the Unification Movement teaches a doctrine which is so all-inclusive that it cannot be classified simply as a theological system or sociological school. We have to call it simply a new worldview.

Vision

The vision of Unificationism is to inherit true love of God.

God created us human beings as his children. His desire was that we would grow up with the beauty of nature, find True Love, make families, have children and build a world of peace. However, God’s dream was not completed because man fell away from God. God’s dream was that his true children share beautiful True Love, and create families full of smiles and happiness. His dream was a society of harmony and cooperation.

God’s dream is that we, his children live in happiness and peace. As God’s children, we must inherit the True Love of God. Unificationism will inherit God’s true love, and will be fulfilling his ideal of creation.

Symbol

The Unification mark, the symbol of the Unification Church, is shaped like the steering wheel of a ship, indicating that we must steer heaven and earth. The gold symbolizes our hope to create an eternal Ideal World of Peace with each one of us at its center.

The circle in the center represents God and his True Love, True Life and True Lineage. The twelve lines radiating from the center represent the twelve months of the year and twelve types of human personalities. The four thicker rays represent four directions, North, South East & West, and the four position foundation centered on God. The split circle around the outside represents give and receive action that is constantly taking place within and between the visible and invisible substantial worlds.

Teachings

Unificationism teaches belief in God, belief in Jesus as the messiah, and belief in the Bible as a holy scripture. However, because a world fulfilling God's ideal of creation has not yet been realized, Unificationists believe that Rev. Moon has been chosen to continue the mission of Jesus, which was left unfinished as the result of his untimely death.

For this reason, Rev. Moon is considered the Messiah, he and his wife are referred to as True Parents, and the Divine Principle, expressing the truths he encountered in his spiritual search, as well as the extensive material contained in his speeches are studied as scripture in the Unification Church .

The Founders:

Rev. Sun Myung Moon and Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon

Rev. Sun Myung Moon was earnestly asked by Jesus who appeared on Easter day when he was just about to turn 16, to fulfill Jesus’ missions in his place. Since then, Rev. Sun Myeong Moon has been put through 7 chagrined sufferings of death, and even his soul being violated by Satan at the deep bottom of hell, instead he has been comforting God and has gained victory, eventually resurrecting and walking the path of completion of 8 stages.

The mission of the Messiah can not be fulfilled without a bride who can become the true mother of mankind, walking the path of death together with him and completely becoming one with his mission. That position is a position of completed Eve, and she is the one who conducts the public work of the holy spirit, blessing us warmly like the mother’s bosom.

That very person is Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon, who has walked the path of seven deaths and resurrections, the completions of 8 stages with true father, and has won victory with love, persevering persecution and difficulty, and has become the true mother of mankind.

True Parents who are the savior and messiah, is still even now spending each day from dawn to dusk with devotion and love to let us inherit God’s true love.

The New Truth

For people who consider the Bible itself to be incontrovertible it can be very difficult to accept the legitimacy of any new truth that arises. But any scripture should be considered not as the truth itself, but as a textbook that teaches the truth, and which needs to be reinterpreted with each passing age in order to shed clearer understanding of the age and the people living in that age. The Divine Principle contains a new truth, discovered by Sun Myung Moon through prayer and revelation, which reinterprets the lessons contained in the Bible to match the spiritual and intellectual level of the people of this current age.

The gala event, which was the tenth and final leg of an ambitious peace tour to 10 nations in less than a month, also featured prayers for peace from local ministers, entertainment from the Sonic Cult band from New York, and awards to 20 “Ambassadors for Peace,” men and women recognized for their outstanding contributions to local and regional charitable programs.

Rev. Dr. Stephen Thurston, President of the National Baptist Convention, called for commitment in his congratulatory remarks and invocation. “We may have come here to listen to God’s words,” he told the audience, “but we must remember to be not just hearers of the word, but doers as well.”

Strong Old Man

Moon, now 92, shows no sign of slowing down in his campaign for peace. In just the past week, he spoke to an overflow crowd of German families and community leaders at the avant-garde Tempodrom in Berlin; and to an audience of diplomats, political figures and faith leaders at the United Nations Palais de Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. In Madrid, Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Oslo and London, he called for a new commitment by leaders of all faiths to put aside doctrinal and ritual differences and work together to create what he calls “One Family under God.”

Rev Moon's Prophecies

In 1985, Moon stirred international controversy when he published his prediction of the imminent demise of communism. At the time the Soviet Union was at the peak of its powers, yet the prophecy was indeed fulfilled less than five years later. In recent times, many prominent figures have expressed the hope that Rev. Moon’s prophecies of an imminent world of peace could prove right again, despite the many discouraging signs in the world.

Era of Peace will Begin - January 13, 2013

Rev. Moon, 92, and Mrs. Moon will arrive in Las Vegas at the end of a world speaking tour that began in Seoul on Easter Sunday and covered eight European capitals including Spain, Italy, Norway, Greece, Turkey, United Kingdom, Switzerland and Germany. The Unification Church founder, who famously predicted in 1985 the fall of the Soviet Union and Communism, has been telling his audiences that January 13, 2013 indeed is a turning point in world history. UN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES 2011

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - On May 15 2011, more than 70 people regardless of race and religion, gathered early morning at Taman Rekreasi Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the UN International Day of Families.

Themed "Confronting Family Poverty and Social Exclusion," the celebration was organized by Universal Peace Federation of Malaysia with co-organizers Malaysian Interfaith Network, Women for Family Welfare Promotion Selangor & Federal Territory and Holy Spirit Association of Selangor and Federal Territory for the first time in Malaysia. Activities included treasure hunt, family games and song performances.

The Secretary General of the Universal Peace Federation of Malaysia, Yeoh Koay Seng said the theme of this year's International Day of Families is "Confronting Family Poverty and Social Exclusion", the organizers intended to raise public awareness on the social impact of families, knowledge of economic and demographic processes and regardless of race, gender and religion to enhance family relationships.

He read the International Day of Families speech by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, which said the world has a lot of poor families, parents of these families cannot provide adequate nutrition for their children. He continued saying poverty led hundreds of thousands of women each year to die during childbirth.

Yeoh Koay Seng pointed out that social exclusion is the root cause of family poverty. He said, unfair social services and related discrimination against social groups, deprived poor parents of planning a better future for their children.

Increasingly Serious Problem of Juvenile Delinquency

On the other hand, the President of Universal Peace Federation of Malaysia, Tan Sri Devaki Krishnan said the problem of juvenile crime is increasing and the situation is worrying. She urged parents to spend more time with their children, to inculcate religious values in them, cultivate their discipline and to help solve the problem of juvenile crime.

She also urged the public to interact more with neighbors, enhance relationship between families and when neighbors need help, practice the spirit of mutual aid.

I'd like to talk to you today about "From Emotion to Action" Many times in our lives, when we are living the blessed life, it's important to allow ourselves, as my wife said in the opening, in her comments, she said, "We have to sometimes give ourselves the permission to be human, give ourselves the permission to be made in God's image."

We have to realize that human beings have very strong emotions. Sometimes we feel anger; sometimes we feel other things in the emotional realm. And it's important to realize that it's OK to have feelings. It's OK to have emotions; even sometimes it's OK to have what we usually think of as negative emotions.

The key to living the blessed life is to make sure that our actions are moving in the right direction. Our emotions can influence our actions, but it's very important that we don't start condemning ourselves for sometimes getting a little upset or having a little less patience than we should have etc.; but we continue to grow, continue to improve our actions as we move along.

People say that there are two types of people that cannot feel strong emotions. The first type of person that cannot feel strong emotions are what they call psychopaths. The second ones are dead people. (Laughter)

So we have to realize that it's very important to learn how to feel emotions. It's important to acknowledge that we can at times have strong emotions.

Building A World of Universal Peace

at a Time of Global Crisis

Madrid, Spain - The more than 700 people who attended the opening program of Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s tour in Europe are unlikely to soon forget the compelling sight of a man giving all he had despite being well into his tenth decade of life. His vitality, his parental love expressed through his caring words, profound insights, joyful stories, sad reflections, thrilling moments, facial expressions—all this drama brought the audience to an intimate closeness. “Spain is a land of passion,” Dr. Sun Myung Moon kept repeating, “and you should use this passion for God’s will."

The program opened with musical offerings from Raul Thais Antequera, a pianist who became blind in the middle of his piano career yet turned disaster into victory by developing a very sensitive way to create music. Raul improvised a tapestry of peaceful music while people were filling the hall. Later on, he played, together with the soprano Monica Luz, an improvised theme for voice and piano bringing heaven closer to us.

Three UPF Ambassadors for Peace offered prayers for peace and blessing: Silvia Cerrada, a young Muslim woman who is very active in different interfaith forums; Abraham Haim, a Jewish historian representing the ancient Sephardic tradition; and Fr. Isidro Hernandez, a Catholic monk of the Trinitarian Order, who has been Media Director of the Spanish Federation of Catholic Orders.

Next, three speakers gave congratulatory remarks. Dr. Thomas Walsh, President of UPF International, greeted the audience with some words in Spanish, a gesture appreciated by the audience. Professor Jose M. Laureiro, director of a public school in Madrid, shared his experiences about peace and multicultural education. In his school 90 percent of the students are non-Spaniards, many of them are Muslim and he himself is a Jew. He commented on his impression the first time he heard Father Moon speak some years ago and the good results he has had by including peace education in the curriculum of a school with more than 30 nationalities.

The third speaker was Prof. Xabier Pikaza, one of the most prominent Catholic theologians in the Spanish language, with over 30 books written, many of them used as text books on comparative religions in Spain and Latin America. Pikaza revealed that he has been studying Father Moon and the Divine Principle together with generations of his students for the past 30 years at the Pontifical University of Salamanca. Pikaza explained how Father Moon came to liberate men and women so they can find in their relationship a divine mission, a way to develop their own divinity—a way back to Eden. Pikaza continued saying that Father Moon came to liberate God, whether we believe or not. God has to go back to the state before the fall.

Pikaza’s remarks served as a fitting introduction for Dr. Hyung Jin Moon, the UPF International Chairman, who came to the stage to give a heartfelt introduction to his parents, both from the perspective of a loving son for an exceptional father and also a faithful believer coming to terms with exceptional beliefs. It was all very moving and truly set the tone for an extraordinary speech by the UPF Founder.

Father Moon's intention in his speech went far beyond the proclamation expressed in the printed text “Building a World of Universal Peace at a Time of Global Crisis” and became a much more intimate time of sharing and reflection with what felt like one family in the hall. “I care for all of you as your true Father,” he said.

By the time the program ended at 11:30 in the night, there was a feeling that we had gone through something exceptional and that it would take some time to come to terms with all that had happened. On their way out of the hall, people were given Father Moon’s autobiography, “As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen,” in the new Spanish edition.

Five and half hours is well beyond the standard or accepted length of time for a lecture, sermon, or book presentation. But people didn’t seem to mind that much. All I heard after the event were words of gratitude and joy for having had the chance to meet an extraordinary person filled with God’s grace.

The Korean people are peace loving. In their 4000-year history they have never invaded another country. Yet they have been dominated many times. Like the Israelites, they know the suffering of oppression, and they have many prophecies in their literature that the Messiah will come to them.

Korea‘s history is one of suffering and hardship. They have been molded into a people whose character makes them uniquely qualified to be the chosen people. They are a deeply religious people, a passionate people that accept all major religions; Islam, Confucianism, Buddhism and Christianity flourish there.

Korea has the fastest growing Christian population. It has the largest congregations in the world. Many go to church before daylight. They embrace their religious faith with an intensity that puts followers of those religions from other countries to shame.

God is our parent who has a suffering heart, and God can only be met in deep suffering and pain. The Messiah and the chosen people are the pioneers who must know God‘s suffering heart. They must be a sensitive and emotional people. They must be tough and disciplined, able to endure the harsh standard of sacrifice and purity needed to overcome persecution. The Korean people have these characteristics. The Messiah was born in a small, obscure country in what is today North Korea. This is hardly the place anyone in the major powers of the world (such as America) would expect a savior to come.

Jesus was also born in a small and obscure country. It was hardly the sort of place anyone from the Emperor of Rome down to the very people of Israel would have expected to find a young man who would someday be seen as the savior of the world by hundreds of millions of people.

In his autobiography As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen, Rev Moon writes:

"There is deep meaning in the tragic history that the Korean people have experienced up to this point. Korea has suffered a great deal because it is destined to become the foundation from which world peace will emerge. Because it has endured suffering and difficulty for such a long time, Korea can now become the central nation from which God brings peace to the world. Even though Koreans have experienced countless hardships, we have never made anyone our enemy or hated anyone. Several of our neighbors have caused difficulty for us, but we have never made them our irreconcilable enemies.

The Korean people have developed a culture of heart that enables us to forgive our enemies. It takes mastery over oneself to love and accept an enemy. The ability to love ones enemy comes only after an individual is victorious over his own internal conflicts.

People who are persecuted are the closest to God. To understand God‘s heart, one must experience His tearful heart. Even a person who normally would not shed tears will do so if he loses his family and his country. He would desperately plead with God in tears. Suffering difficulties causes one to have a heart that sheds tears and cries, but it is through this type of heart that one can receive God‘s blessing. God comes to a heart that is soaked with tears. Korea has become a land of heavenly fortune because so many tears have been shed within the hearts of its people.

Korean people honor their ancestors. No matter how hungry we may be, we will never sell the land where our ancestors are buried in order to buy food. Historically we have maintained a way of thinking that respects Heaven. We are a modern, civilized nation that still honors the world of the spirit. When we accepted Buddhism and Confucianism, they gave rise to a beautiful religious culture. More recently Christian and Muslim traditions have begun to thrive here as well. All these religions live without conflict within Korea. They blend together and coexist peacefully. What is it that has made us such a unique people?"

The Symbolical Korean Flag

The Korean flag is symbolic for God. “The flag consists of three parts: The white background, the red and blue circle in the center and four trigrams, one in each corner of the flag.”

“The red and blue circle in the center is called ‘Taeguk’, the origin of all things in the universe. The central thought is perfect harmony and balance: A continuous movement within the sphere of infinity, resulting in one unit. The blue part of ‘Taeguk’ is called ‘Yin’ and represents all negative aspects of the balance that is typical for the symbol. The red part is called ‘Yang’ and describes all positive aspects.”

The dual characteristics of God reflected in the world through the invisible mind and external body and the duality of masculine and feminine (i.e., of God being a parent) is represented by the red and blue colors of the center circle. The upper red paisley represents the yang nature of masculinity; the lower blue paisley represents the yin nature of femininity. Red is on top symbolizing the vertical relationship between man and woman.

Red also symbolizes God‘s love and life. God created our blood red. Satan distorts this color. The communist Soviet Union‘s flag was red. There are 'red light districts' of prostitution symbolizing the Fall.

The blue in the center circle symbolizes God‘s truth. These are the life elements God gives for us to grow spiritually.

“The four trigrams also indicate the duality of opposites and balance. In the upper left trigram, three unbroken lines symbolize Heaven; opposite them in the lower right, three broken lines represent Earth. In the upper right trigram, two broken lines separated by an unbroken line is the symbol of Fire; opposite them is water, symbolized by two unbroken lines separated by a broken line.”

The black trigrams in each corner symbolize the four seasons and cardinal directions of north, south, east and west. The number four is also the symbol for the family unit of the four-position foundation. The circle symbolizes eternity, or God. The flag is white, symbolizing God‘s purity and peace.

The book of Revelation speaks of white robes. Because white was for centuries the primary color worn by Koreans, Korea was known as the 'white-clad' people. The name of the capitol is Seoul. Korea‘s ancient name was Chosen.

I assume that for many people daily life is filled with negative factors that might include sickness, obesity, sorrow, fatigue, dullness, aging, pain, abuse, anxiety, fear, stress, anguish, poverty, unemployment, indifference, unpleasantness, boredom, solitude, anger, vengefulness, jealous, failure, and so forth, which distract one from peacefulness and lead in a negative direction. Felonious crimes and serious accidents are immediately reported to the public via newspapers, TV, or the Internet; this type of anxiety-provoking information pours upon you just like a shower, and you have no choice but to bathe in it. But looking toward negative aspects only will set your mind to accept the negative as the reality, and eventually make you question, “How can I lead a happy life?” This gradually eats away at your precious life, damaging your mental and physical health, as well as putting you further away from the origin of your mind.

Happiness Will Come When You Have Positive Thinking

A newborn baby is full of energy, and everyone wishes to lead an enriched life like the baby’s. Since almost everyone is born in a healthy condition, we should focus a spotlight on the positive side of the life rather than make our eyes and mind face toward the negative side. A happy and enriched life is not a “dream” for only those who are chosen, but ought to be a “reality” to all of us. For example, you may be able to come up with an excellent way to resolve the situation when you have some trouble with your neighbors, or you may have an impulse to draw as soon as you look at a beautiful flower. Also you might as well be able to be generous and patient when you are confronted with hardships at work through your curiosity and inquiring mind, which may be empowered by adversity. This can even be a great potential for success. This generous mind is what is called “positive thinking” and also is an “inventory of the heart,” preserving your emotion and action.

Positive Psychology = Card of Happiness

Still some may inquire, “How on earth can we make our life turn around when it is deeply saturated with misery, frustration, and anger?” Positive psychology may be called the “card of happiness” that urges you to take an action, give yourself confidence, and be focused on hope and optimism. When you use this card, what a situation means to you may become totally different from what it was before.

For instance, you can say, “Despite the recession, I have a job, a family, and savings to feed myself and my family. I’m also grateful that I am surrounded by good friends who give me great advice.” Or “I am so grateful that I can deliver my unchanging love and gratitude to my mother, who is fighting diseases, while I closely attend her. I can feel the value and significance of life every time she and I share from the heart and care for each other. I believe that, by the grace of Heaven, her soul will dwell within my heart forever even after she is ascended. I’d like to support those who are dedicated to serving my mother and other patients. I thank God for my good health, and I look forward to my life in the future.” These are great examples of using the “card of happiness” to turn a challenging situation into totally the opposite.

Refining Your Positive Side

Now how can you manage to stay on the positive side? Being resigned and cynical, you could go into a negative spiral, which affects emotion, thoughts, and action and eventually would lead to depression and anxiety. However, positive thinking and feeling will put you on an upward spiral where joy, interests, satisfaction, pride, and love would complement each other so as to expand your thinking–action range. Also this extends your mental capacity to include creativity, a flexible mind, curiosity, a spirit of inquiry, environmental adaptability, and generosity, which would result in increasing the “inventory” where positive thinking, emotion, and action are preserved within you.

Thus, the first priority is to focus yourself upon positive thinking so that you can be uplifted by an upward spiral with which your emotion and actions are fostered and refined; then your good deeds, love, and joy will be enhanced. This whole process will immunize you against adversity and equip you with the ability to have a prompt recovery from the various damages you experience. Riding with this “upward spiral” will certainly increase your likelihood to achieve happiness. Growth and enhancement on the positive side will enable you to overcome obstacles in your life and propel you forward to leading the happy life that everyone wants. It is solely your own will that enables you to reach the unlimited potential of happiness, and you can generate happiness just like the way you build up a healthy and tough body. Immanuel Rinkema, a young 19-year-old Unificationist was recently shown on ABC’s television show, “What Would You Do,” this past Friday, March 25 at 9p.m. This primetime news show is famous for setting up elaborate realistic scenarios with actors testing real controversial subjects to see what ordinary people would do when pushed to act, or if they act at all. This week Mr. Rinkema was one of these ordinary people.

The purpose of one scene in the show was to see what customers would do if they saw a caretaker refusing to buy a black doll for a white girl who insisted that she wanted the black doll. Soon, other customers became involved with this explicit act of racism.

Mr. Rinkema was the last customer recorded by hidden cameras while speaking with the customers at the toy store in New York City. He is first introduced on the show as a “remarkable young man, who surprises all of us with his wisdom and maturity.”

While not knowing that he was on camera, Mr. Rinkema was filmed talking about the importance of acknowledging someone for his or her internal self, instead of his or her race and outer appearance. “All I have to say is that we are all God’s children, and the value comes from the inside, not the outside,” Rinkema says to the caretaker.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Rinkema himself is half-Japanese and half-Dutch and has grown up in a church community in which mixed race is common and welcomed. He also tells the customer that, “As a Sunday School teacher, I have a lot of different races in my class. It kind of hurts me to hear you say that about African-American children.”

He is soon surprised by the host, John Quinones, who appears with cameras and tells Mr. Rinkema that the caretaker and child are actresses who had tested his response to the scene. Mr. Rinkema is then shown crying, as a narrator explains that he had been holding back his emotions for the sake of the child.

Both the show host and actress watch in awe as Mr. Rinkema gives his views: “We create the boundaries between the nations. We create the boundaries between people. We create, ‘Oh, she’s white.’ Everyone is our brother and sister, I feel. We are one big family, and we need to learn to love people like that.”

The clip finishes with Mr. Quinones’ observation: “The wisdom of this young hero shows us just how far we’ve come as a society."

Mr. Rinkema has shared with familyfed.org that although it was not aired on the show on Friday, after he spoke, the show host said to him "Wow, I'm impressed, a 19-year-old boy with this kind of outlook. Where do you get it from?"

Mr. Rinkema says that he responded:" I grew up in the Unification Church, and I learned this standard of taking care of people from my parents and their love for the True Parents. They teach us how to take care of each other and this standard of love like a real parent would. I had a picture of my parents and True Parents with me, so I showed it to the show host. They (True Parents) gave me the understanding of who I am as God's child, and that is where I get my value from.”

WHY COMMUNISM ENDED

When historians make a final analysis of why communism came to an end, they will recognize that no single person did more than Reverend Sun Myung Moon to bring about the peaceful end of communism. Reverend Moon's works covered a spectrum of major activities in education, culture, conferences, rallies and the media. The programs were worldwide including Korea, Japan, the United States and Latin America.

From the beginning of his public mission Reverend Moon called communism “one of God’s three great headaches.” Therefore, in the 1950s, in circumstances of extreme poverty in a war-torn nation, he began tireless, intensive work to personally solve this major headache of God.

The Washington Times' International Impact

That The Washington Times would be able to play such a pronounced role in the Cold War was intuited by some affected parties from the newspaper's inception. In 1982 neither the Soviet nor the Chinese governments allowed the Times to open news bureaus in their capitals. The American radical left newsletter Overthrow in its June/July 1982 issue called for sabotage of The Washington Times , and the Times was subjected to frontal attacks in pro-communist publications such as Covert Action and CounterSpy. On the other hand, it was reported that Ronald Reagan made it a daily practice to make The Washington Times the first paper that he read every morning. The Washington Times was directly credited with certain of President Reagan's responses to critical issues, including the 1985 forced landing and apprehension of the Palestinian terrorists responsible for the hijacking of the luxury ocean-liner Achille Lauro and for the cold-blooded murder of American businessman Leon Klinghoffer.

The Washington Times influenced reporting practices and news coverage worldwide, even in communist and frontline countries. In 1988 Nobel peace laureate Oscar Sanchez Arias, then president of Costa Rica, a nation with a border on Sandinista-controlled Nicaragua, told the American Society of Newspaper Editors that Costa Rican newspapers depended on The Washington Times for news of their world. He went on to say that the only American newspaper Costa Rican citizens know exists is The Washington Times, and that if Costa Rican newspapers published something from the U.S. it was from the Times. In 1990, future Nicaraguan President Violeta Chamorro Barrios, owner of Nicaraguan independent newspaper La Prensa, the only daily newspaper which dared to defy Nicaragua's Sandinista government, confided to The New York Times' editorial board that the Sandinistas themselves regarded The Washington Times as "the newspaper of the Nicaraguan opposition." Washington Times Editor-in-Chief Arnaud de Borchgrave informed American Leadership Conference attendees in 1988 that by that time, The Washington Times served as the source for more than half of all the news stories broadcasted into the Soviet Union and its satellites via Radio Free Europe and Voice of America.

Human-Rights Activist To Help Quake Relief in Japan

Mr. Luke Higuchi, president of Survivor's Against Forced Exit (SAFE), a group dedicated to stopping religious kidnapping and forced conversion in Japan, is scheduled to spend several weeks in Japan to assist relief efforts and to gather facts about the status of Japanese victims of religious persecution.

A U.S. citizen and a resident of Leonia, New Jersey, Mr. Higuchi will serve as a liaison and translator for nonprofit relief organizations that will send food and medicine to the hardest hit areas on Japan's eastern coast. Mr. Higuchi is also a Unificationist active in the Northern New Jersey branch of the Unification Church.

"I am going back to my native Japan to rebuild the country – but not only with bricks and mortar but with a better human-rights foundation," Mr. Higuchi says, adding: "Although I still have a passion to help victims of religious persecution, the fact is that now is the time to help the whole nation of Japan, regardless of partisan or religious differences. We will help anyone, including those who have gone out of their way to deny the religious freedom of members of new religious movements."

Mr. Higuchi has spent the last year speaking at rallies and on public-affairs TV programs about the problem of kidnapping and false imprisonment suffered by more than 4,300 Japanese citizens who are members of the Unification Church. (Mr. Higuchi's talk at a press conference in Bowie, MD on March 15, 2011 was cancelled in deference to the crisis in Japan.)

Sometimes referred to as "deprogramming," the practice of holding people against their will for days, weeks, or months and until they agree to recant their beliefs was the fate of hundreds of American citizens 35 years ago, but such practices ended after successful prosecutions of the so-called deprogrammers. However, in Japan, the phenomenon continues and has drawn investigations by two working groups within the UN Human Rights Council. Professional faith-breakers in Japan reportedly are paid $50,000 to $100,000 to forcibly de-convert members of minority religions, who sometimes endure physical and psychological abuse for weeks at a time.

Mr. Higuchi has said that he will relay some reports of his fact-finding mission which could be published on the Familyfed.org website while he is in Tokyo.

The Case of Mr. Goto
Toru Goto was born in Yamagata, Japan on November 2, 1963. During his college days in Nihon University, his older brother invited him to learn the Divine Principle which later led him to join the Unification Church. After graduating in 1987 with a degree in architecture, he started working in a construction company. His first kidnapping occured in October of 1987, which he successfully escaped by pretending to surrender his faith after a month of confinement. He was kidnapped again on September 11, 1995, and the confinement continued for 12 years and 5 months until he was released on February 10, 2008. On October 2008, together with other victims and determined people, he founded a civil group called “Association to Eliminate Religious Kidnapping and Forced Conversion”. He presently serves as the vice-representative of the group.

Rev. Moon: "I hope people of Japan will find courage to rise again"

The donation of $1.7 million by Rev. Sun Myung Moon on March 20 for relief of Japanese earthquake victims reflected Rev. Moon’s deep love for Japan.

“Rev. Moon is heartbroken that Japanese citizens are going through tremendous suffering as a result of the recent earthquake,” said Rev. Hyung Jin Moon, the international president of the Unification Church who visited the Japan Red Cross office this day to convey the donation on behalf of the 91-year-old Rev. Sun Myung Moon.”

“We are making this contribution today following the instruction of Rev. Sun Myung Moon so to comfort the people of Japan, particularly the earthquake victims, and to encourage the victims,” Rev. Hyung Jin Moon said.

Rev Moon was tortured by Japan before, but still loves

Rev. Sun Myung Moon lived in Japan as a student during the period when Japan occupied Korea as its colony. Rev. Moon was tortured severely by Japanese police following an arrest on suspicion of participating in the Korean independence movement.

Earlier, on March 19, Rev. Hyung Jin Moon visited an area in Aomori Prefecture that had suffered damage from the earthquake and tsunami and met with victims and their families.

On March 20, prior to visiting the Red Cross, Rev. Hyung Jin Moon visited the Headquarters of the Japan Unification Church to offer prayers for Japan’s quick recovery from the earthquake damage. He also pledged to provide support to victims.

Meanwhile, at the Unification Church World Headquarters Church (Cheon Bok Gung) in Yongsan, members are praying at 5 a.m., 12 moon and 7:30 pm for the victims of the Japan earthquake and for Japan’s quick recovery.

There is much to solve in Malaysia pertaining to the government, Islam, and religious minorities. This decision and action on the part of the Malaysian government recently, must be acknowledged and praised.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysia's government agreed Tuesday to release some 35,000 imported Bibles seized by customs officials amid a dispute over their use of the word "Allah" as a translation for God.

The decision was a major step by the Muslim-dominated government to soothe frustrations among religious minorities. Last week, Malaysia's main Christian grouping said it was fed up and disillusioned with authorities' refusal to allow the distribution of the Malay-language Bibles.

The Prime Minister's Department said in a statement that the government was releasing the books, which have been held for months at two ports, because it was "committed to resolve amicably any interfaith issues."

But the statement also assured Muslims that the announcement would not jeopardize their interests in an ongoing court case on whether non-Muslims have the constitutional right to use "Allah."

Authorities have long placed restrictions on the distribution of Malay-language Bibles, mainly imported from Indonesia. Such Bibles must be stamped with the words "For Christians Only," which is generally meant to prevent anyone from trying to convert Muslims, who comprise nearly 60 percent of Malaysia's 28 million people.

Authorities say they fear that Malay-language Christian texts using the word "Allah" for God will confuse Muslims.

The Rev. Hermen Shastri, an official with the Council of Churches of Malaysia, welcomed the government's decision but stressed that Christians should be guaranteed the right to obtain the Bible in any language.

A court ruled in December 2009 that Malaysia's religious minorities - mostly Christians, Buddhists and Hindus - have the right to use "Allah." The government has appealed the verdict, but no hearings have been scheduled.

The dispute caused a brief surge in tensions in January 2010, when 11 churches were attacked by firebombs amid anger among some Muslims over the court ruling.

21,000 Bows - A Passion To Save Mankind

A man wearing hanbok (traditional Korean clothes) offered three thousand bows a day for a whole week. If you are wondering what might drive a Buddhist to do such a thing, you are only half-right. He is, in fact, interested in Buddhism but not a Buddhist himself.

The man in question is none other than the world president of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (Unificationism) Rev. Hyung Jin Moon. Rev. Hyung Jin Moon is the youngest son of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who is the founder of Unificationism.

The Buddhist community, which has recently been at odds with Christians and the government due to religious prejudice, now seeks to resolve conflicts through academic seminars, debates and forums. Given the current religious climate in Korea, the fact that the president of the Unification Church, who believes in the Christian God, offered a set of bows came as a surprise. As the feeling of pleasant surprise evolved into an epiphany that he could aid in seeking a solution to religious conflict, we visited Rev. Hyung Jin Moon in the church he pastors, the Unification Church World Headquarters Church in Cheong-Pa Dong on Aug. 12th.

Despite the fact that he had finished the 21,000-bow devotion only a few days ago, Rev. Hyung Jin Moon looked to be in good health.

Offering 21,000 bows for Peace
I asked him about his motivation for offering bows. His answer was simpler than I expected.

He said, “In the Unification Church, we bow to God as a sign of respect. There is nothing wrong about bowing to your own parents out of respect. It is customary for our church members to offer a predetermined number of bows.” He added, “The reason I offered a set of 21,000 bows was so that the holy temple of our church could be established smoothly. In the Unification Church, the number 21 symbolizes the period which is needed for human beings to achieve perfection.”

A place where all people can come together beyond race, religion, and culture in harmony and receive Heavenly Blessing is on Earth, the Fatherland of Korea. On October 12th 2008, Reverend Sun Myung Moon has initiated the historical task in building this temple. Cheon Bok Gung, the temple for world peace and unity. Today, it has been completed.

“Peace will never come to this earth unless we first tear down the walls between religions I have called on people until my voice is hoarse to transcend their religious factions and even their religions. They have fallen into a selfish thought process that puts their religion or faction first. A very unique thing in this building is it's prayer room, where there's paintings of the four great saints, statues of religious and also all centering upon the True Parents of Heaven, Earth and Humankind. All kinds of religious people are welcomed to pray in this room to their own respective religions and bow to True Parents. This is truly the actualization of inter-religious harmony. Rev Moon is truly the Messiah who brings unity among religions.

When we look at religion, it is Father Moon’s great insight that at the very core, what religion truly seeks is relationship. The Latin etymology of the word is to re-connect back to a relationship first with God, and then heaven, earth, and mankind. Only through relationship can the virtues of love, peace, tolerance, harmony, compassion can exist. Everything is based on relationships. Even the creation of time and space is centered on God’s desire for relationships.

The 13th century Italian mathematician Fibonacci introduced Arabic numerals into the Western world and is known particularly for the Fibonacci sequence. This is created by a sequence of numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233 .... This is also known as the Golden Mean and the perfect proportion. Through this sequence one can create an incredible shape known as the Fibonacci spiral. It can be found all over the universe. One of the great truths that Father Moon has taught us is that God relates to us with numbers.

Fibonacci Spiral is Everywhere

When you look at the spiral galaxies and the way water spirals down a drain, what you see is the Fibonacci spiral. It also appears in the way sub-atomic particles move in zero gravity. You see it in snails and their shells, how petals grow on flowers and branches form on trees. You see it in the way tendrils of pumpkin vines grow. You see it in the tusks of mammals and horns of animals. You see it in the proportion of the beak of an eagle and parrot. You see it under the water and in flying animals – on the tails of sea horses and chameleons. You see it in snowflakes. You will see the spiral on your fingertips, the cochlea of the ear, 26 curves of brain, the DNA helix, and the umbilical cord of a baby.

Can you see a pattern emerging?

The creator created this universe with the desire for relationship and with a mind. Everyone around the globe looking at something with the proportion of approximately 1:1618 will see it as a proportion of beauty.

Sacred Geometry

The universe starts from a singularity. It moves into the second dimension by extending north, south, east and west — the second dimension of reality. That is the beginning of time, but there is no space yet because there is no way to gauge relative distance without boundaries. So God in his architecture of the universe created boundaries so you can gauge relative distance. When you close off the lines extending outwards, you create boundaries, which form space. When the vertical and horizontal axes are closed off it forms a square, and when the square moves, it forms a circle.

In the Bible we read that God created Adam and from Adam he created Eve. This also is mathematical in the sense that Adam is represented by a square, and Eve by a circle. If you want to create a feminine form, which is curved, you must start with a line. To form a circle from a point, you need a radius. Over the centuries, straight and rigid lines have been described as masculine and curves as feminine.

Male and female move together in what Father calls give and receive action. They set up a four-position foundation, from which families, communities, societies, and nations emerge.

For us, God comes from the center and reveals himself to the world. For us as humanity, our task is to return to the center of our entirety, which is God.

Father talks about left-right and up-down relationships. I thought he was speaking from the Confucian tradition, but he was speaking mathematically. When we take this to the three-dimensional plane, it forms an octahedron. If you rotate this in any direction, you create a sphere.

So God must first have had foundational forms to create a sphere. There is an equation for the Fibonacci sequence (Fn = Fn-1 + Fn-2, with seed values F0 = 0 and F1 = 1). To create the equation you need a perfect square. Its foundational form is a perfect square and perfect circle with a common center.

In the great architecture of all great religions you see overlapping circles with the same radius, intersecting in such a way that the center of each circle lies on the circumference of the other. This is the vesica piscis. One circle can represent God and the other man. Christ comes from the vesica piscis. This is the womb of creation.

From the vesica piscis comes all shapes: ovals, triangles, 60-60-60 degree triangles and 30-60-90 degree triangles emerge from this womb of creation. If you create six circles around a center with overlapping radiuses, you have a six-point star, which you see all around the ancient world. To create this shape you need the foundational circle and square. Every shape in the created world comes from this pattern.

We find these forms in the Principle, the four-position foundation. We find God, and his essence is true love. The whole universe emerges from this, and all relationships come from this.

Star of David in your body

Your DNA comes from this. When you were conceived by the union of your father’s and mother’s seed, you were one cell. By a process of mitosis, which is cell division, we began to grow: 1 cell, 2 cells, and then 4 cells. Those four cells are not just floating in fluid. They are in a pattern: 3 at the bottom and 1 on top. When you connect the centers of those 4 cells, you get a perfect tetrahedron.

When you were 8 cells, if you connected the centers, you get a star tetrahedron, or the Star of David. When you rotate that, you get a perfect square within a sphere.

Everything is relationships. This is all revealed in Father’s teaching. He teaches us that God created man in his image and the universe in the image of man. That is fascinating teaching. Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing of the circle and square around that man. These are average proportions.

The center of the square is the reproductive organs. Father Moon’s great insight is that all destructive sin comes from destroying the value of this sacred part. There is another man in this drawing, with his hands diagonally up and his legs diagonally out. That center is the navel, not the reproductive organs. When you bring the two centers together you have the same proportions as when you had 8 cells. You are still in the same circle:square proportion as you were when you had 8 cells.

Father Moon has always taught us that the heart is the center. He has taught us that through our children and our lineage we create new life and new lineage. When you create a circle from the heart to reproductive organs, the ratio is 1:365. That is the exact ratio of the diameter of earth to the moon. The distance from the earth to the moon is the same ratio to the diameter of the sun: 1:362. What does it mean that we are in the same ratio with the created universe?

God loves you

God is our creator and he desires to be in a relationship of give and receive with the created world. From that understanding a true relationship can emerge. A true relationship is to sacrifice ourselves for the other; a false relationship is to sacrifice others for ourselves. True peace and compassion can only come about through true relationships: between people and God, husband and wife, parents and children, families and the world.

From all this we can decipher that God wants to be in relationship with us and lead us with truth, beauty, and goodness, which is true love. This is the pathway to true peace. It is the pathway to true relationships, true love, and true family.

Rev Moon Says Peace Is Close Despite Renewed Tension on Korean Peninsular

A NEW ERA OF UNIVERSAL PEACE WILL COME

Despite the sudden outbreak of renewed hostilities between the two Koreas, UPF Founder Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon has reiterated his firm belief that a new era of lasting peace is close at hand. His confident prediction came at the conclusion of the UPF World Assembly 2010, which drew a crowd of over 3,000 at the Manhattan Center in New York on November 22.

“We are living in a historic time of great transition,” Dr. Moon said. “It is a time for a great revolution to change history, to unite the spiritual and physical worlds and to create the ideal kingdom of heaven that God has longed for since the beginning of time.”

Back in April, when the South Korean navy ship Cheonan was sunk by an alleged North Korean torpedo attack, Rev. Moon called for restraint in a tour of major Korean cities, and held special seunghwa ascension services for the 46 South Korean sailors killed in that attack.

“The problems afflicting humanity can only be resolved through an ideology based on the true love of God,” he said. “At the same time, we must be concerned to liberate the grieving heart of God, the heavenly parent who lost his beloved children. More than 30 Ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from the United Nations and from embassies in Washington DC were in attendance. “I believe the principles we heard tonight could help our nation, and I want to invite the UPF to come and hold a leadership program,” said. H.E. Dr. Mory Kaba, Ambssador of Guinea to the US. “We should all become Ambassadors of Peace,” said Dr. Mahamoud Adam Bechir, Ambassador of Chad to the US.

Interfaith Prayers for Peace

Rev. In Jin Moon, President and CEO of the Unification Church of America, opened the program by urging those gathered to become the new “peace generation” the world needs. Georgia State Senator Donzella James called for a return to traditional values and affirmed UPF’s commitment to marriage and family.

Dr. Hyung Jin Moon, who serves as the UPF International Chairman, spoke not only of the need for interfaith dialogue and cooperation, but insisted that spiritual values must serve as the foundation for good governance and harmonious international relations, referring to his father’s call for an interfaith council at the UN.

The evening also featured interfaith prayers and the lighting of peace candles by representatives of seven major world religions, and an uplifting musical interlude from the Lovin’ Life Band.

Dr. Hussein Hassouna, the Ambassador of the League of Arab States to the United States, was a featured speaker. He commented on the importance of the UPF’s Middle East Peace Initiative, (MEPI), launched in 2003 to work for reconciliation despite deep historic resentments. “I know that resolving the situation in Palestine with justice, equality and fairness, to the betterment of both sides, has long been a goal of the UPF, as it is of us all,” he said. “Yet such an outcome cannot come solely through political, diplomatic, and economic efforts. It will need the application of universal principles that help all the parties go beyond the artificial barriers and boundaries that have been created by race, religion and nationality.”

Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury, the former UN Under-Secretary-General who served two terms as President of the UN Security Council, applauded the UPF’s vision of UN renewal. “Tonight’s gathering, with representatives of more than 190 nations seated in conference, supported by the prayers of religious leaders of every major faith and watched over by thousands of observers, is truly a model of what a Peace UN could be,” he said. Amb. Chowdhury promotes the Culture of Peace and has been urging effective implementation of the International Decade for the Culture of Peace.

With national representatives seated in alphabetical order, delegates from neighboring East African nations of Ethiopia and Eritrea found themselves side by side. For three decades Eritrea fought Ethiopia for its independence, which was finally recognized in 1993. The two men made plans for joint cultural programs to build better understanding and goodwill between their nations.

Many in the audience said they left with a renewed hope for peace. New York professor, author and ethicist Dr. Lucinda Mosher observed that “it was truly uplifting and respectful of all faiths, and I fully agree that the United Nations will only be able to fulfill its mission by putting God and faith at the center.” New York United Methodist pastor Dr. Luonne Rouse agreed. “Father Moon is speaking with absolute commitment, revealing the pure truth without hesitation,” he said. “We must let the world know about this critical and opportune moment.”
