Don’t assume that an aching back means a pulled muscle. It is the most common symptom of vertebral fractures, small cracks in the vertebrae of the spine. About 25% of women over 60 are prone to them. Usually they are never diagnosed. Hairline cracks in the vertebrae eventually can cause the bone to crumble and collapse. This condition is known as compression fracture. These fractures are usually due to osteopenia. People with one fracture are at risk of developing others. To prevent further problems, adopt bone-building stategies to protect the spine. Drug therapy, more calcium, vitamin D supplements, and eating leafy vegetables, such as kale and spinach (high in vitamin K, which helps calcium enter the bones) are helpful. Walk, swim, and strenthen your abdominal muscles. If the pain is severe, use ice or heat to relieve it. Get moving, Cleveland, and eat well!

Potatoes are excellent sources of potassium. With the increasing popularity of high protein, low carb diets, consumers sometime believe that potatoes are bad foods. But potatoes have excellent sources of potassium, essential for healthy blood pressure. An average potato contains 400 mg to 900 mg of potassium (4,700 mg is needed daily to rid the body of excess sodium). Potatoes are also high in vitamin C to fend off colds and bacteria. Skip the sour cream and butter, as well as the salt, and you will have a delicious, healthy, and low cost nutritional punch!
