It is the time of the year that all online entrepreneurs look forward to – Black Friday Cyber Monday – abbreviated BFCM . Several friends and colleagues have asked me for my recommendations for various online software related products.

I am listing only those deals that either 1) I have used or 2) deeply experimented with sometime in the past.

Software SAAS Deals

AppSumo BriefCase

I have been an AppSumo member since 2011. For the uninitiated, AppSumo is a ‘Groupon’ like website for entrepreneurs offering lifetime deals on Software As A Service (SAAS) subscriptions and various digital products. They are experts in negotiating life time deals with upcoming startups (and sometimes even established organizations.). A subscription which would normally be available for $20-$50 per month, is negotiated down to $39-$49 for a lifetime. Yes, for a one time lifetime cost! What is the benefit for the company? You ask? AppSumo has a subscriber base of 1M+ users. It is an instant exposure to the one million app hungry entrepreneurs. It is one of the best ways for upcoming startups to validate their idea or possibly show numbers to a VC and make some good chunk of money in the process.

Since the time folks at AppSumo started the company, they have only dealt in one-time lifetime deals. This Black Friday AppSumo officially launched a new product called AppSumo BriefCase which gives you access to over $1,000/month worth of premium software subscriptions for just $49/month. If you pay yearly, they further reduce the cost down to $500/year. I became a monthly member of AppSumo BriefCase last month and instantly upgraded my membership to yearly plan this week. If you sign up for yearly plan by this Black Friday, they are offering a limited time $50 Amazon credit voucher and $100 AppSumo credit voucher. As of writing this article, 286 such codes remain.

If you are an Entrepreneur, SAAS founder or a blogger do checkout AppSumo BriefCase. They also have a 7 days no obligation free trial.

Web Hosting

The search for perfect web host never seems to end. I have witnessed a trend in the past several years. All webhosts start on a good note with claims of awesome support. When faced with growth, they start slacking on support , bad infrastructure or get acquired by EIG.

Here are some webhosts who have been consistent with their support , infrastructure and upgraded themselves as per the current needs of the web. Most importantly they have not been acquired by the EIG group.

Tech-stack wise I ensure that all of them should support PHP 7, one-click LetsEncrypt SSL and http/2.

SiteGround

If you are looking for shared web hosting, SiteGround is the best bet at the moment. My suggestion is to go for ‘Go Geek’ plan for the maximum duration that you can afford. Since they provide discount only on the first receipt, I normally go for 3 years purchase.

They are running a 70% off promo for 3 days starting from Black Friday (Nov 24, 2017) and ending on Cyber Monday (Nov 27, 2017). Check all the plans.

CloudWays

If your needs have exceeded the shared webhosting or you need a bit more control with root access etc, then you may want to go with CloudWays. They have come up with an interesting concept. CloudWays has tied-up with several premium un-managed webhosting providers and brought them to a single platform. They provide you managed services on those premium servers. Currently CloudWays has a tie-up with Digital Ocean, Linode, VULTR, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Kyup. All of them provide enterprise class hosting but unmanaged.

CloudWays comes as a layer on top to provide you completely managed hosting. Essentially the combo is like a dedicated server with a managed host on top. You don’t have to deal with the premium providers at all. All the heavy lifting is done by CloudWays. They are offering $150 in free credits if you sign up by Nov 24, 2017 using a code BF150. Check CloudWays plans.

WP Engine

If you are a WordPress fan and you want that the security, backups, caching, cleanup (in case of hack) should be the responsibility of the webhost then go with WP Engine. They are a fully managed WordPress host. The plans are (of course) pricey if you compare with a shared host but you-get-what-you-pay-for.

If you are only interested in creating good content and leaving the rest to a 3rd party, WP Engine should be your choice. Use the coupon cyberwpe35 to get 35% off from your first month! Check their plans.

WordPress Themes

I started blogging on a free WordPress theme back in 2007. I then migrated to Thesis Theme by DIYThemes somewhere in 2009 and recommended those to everyone. I used Thesis Theme till their last version (1.8.x). If my memory serves right, they were the guys who revolutionized premium WordPress theme market. I don’t really know what bug bit its founder in 2010. He went into an ugly spat with WordPress cofounder Matt Mullenweg, broke his long relationship with Brian Clark and to make it worse came out with Thesis Theme 2.x. The latest version made Thesis theme just the opposite of what earlier version was famous for. Even a simple thing such as having an opt-in form for a particular autoresponder service like Aweber, you now need a box to be downloaded. His forums are inundated with support requests even for these simple features. Ok, more on the rant later but I hope you get the drift. I no longer recommend Thesis Theme now – hence no link.

As of 2017, I recommend WordPress themes from two companies. Elegant Themes and StudioPress.

Elegant Themes: They have taken the premium WordPress theme market to a different level altogether. They have a knack for producing beautiful looking themes. Just visit any of their demo themes to get an idea. If you are aiming for beautiful themes on photography/travel/food niche or offline businesses wanting to have an online presence , go for Elegant Themes. You can never go wrong with them.

I have the $249 lifetime deal from them and in fact this blog runs on Divi – the most downloaded theme in the ElegantThemes world. This Black Friday they are coming up with the biggest Black Friday sale of all time with tons of prizes as a giveaway. Check out the complete details of the Black Friday deal at Elegant Themes.

StudioPress: If you are looking for themes from pure blogging perspective and you churn-up lots of content on a regular basis and wanted to be sure that your themes are well SEO optimized, having proper schema markup, well implemented pagination go for StudioPress. Tech bloggers love their themes. Having said that, you should note, there is a bit of learning curve with them if you wish to customize the child themes.

I have a $499 pack from Studio Press which entitles me to a lifetime of current and future themes released by StudioPress. From Black Friday till Cyber Monday they are offering a straight 25% discount for all new customers. Check out StudioPress

Marketing Automation / Auto Responder

The plain old auto responders are boring and so 2010esque. It’s the time of hyper targeting. Marketing Automation is the new buzzword. You can now target your visitors on a device, country, machine OS, search engine, social media and countless other parameters. Now you can show your targeted visitors the content which they are interested in.

ConvertFox: This is a absolutely new player in the market which is going to take the incumbents like InfusionSoft, Ontraport and Intercom head-on. ConvertFox provides website chat, Autoresponder, Marketing automation, lead-gen forms, chat-bots in a single tool and all of them talk to each other.

ConvertFox – as part of their launch special – is offering an insane deal till Nov 25th. For $49 you get a lifetime account with unlimited subscribers, 15,000 emails and 3 chat agents. I have been using them on three of my production sites since last month. Check my detailed review. Also, signup before they run out of lifetime codes.

Drip: While ConvertFox is great but at this point in time, it’s bit rough on the edges. For long terms projects, I would buy ConvertFox deals but If I have an urgent requirement, I would subscribe to Drip. It’s a proven established player in the market. Their Visual WorkFlows feature is a beauty to watch.

Drip folks doesn’t seem to be having a BFCM deal this year. Nonetheless, they do offer a free plan. Check out Drip.

An in-depth review of ConvertFox - A Marketing Automation Tool. We cover setup, messenger, auto-responders, marketing automation, cost. Finally whether you should buy it or not.

The post Review: ConvertFox – Is It Really The Best Marketing Automation Tool for Your Money? appeared first on Review Of Web.

There is a marked shift from how we used to do email marketing 8-10 years back than what we do today. During those days, you would draft an auto-responder series, slap it on your email auto-responder of choice and will then wait for results.

Marketers weren’t happy.

Marketers wanted to target their subscribers at a micro-level, hence evolved the use of premium
marketing automation
tools like InfusionSoft and Ontraport.

As per Marketo, Marketing automation is a category of technology that allows companies to streamline, automate, and measure marketing tasks and workflows, so they can increase operational efficiency and grow revenue faster.

In the last few years there is an onslaught of marketing automation tools, so much so that they are giving a tough time to the incumbents.

The proof is in the pudding.

If Google trends data is any indication, Drip.co and Intercom have almost overthrown the existing players. I have not included the likes of Aweber and MailChimp in the comparison because Aweber is a simple auto-responder and yet to catch up with full-fledged marketing automation, MailChimp graduated to marketing automation only 6 months back in around May 2017.

Here I would like to state that Aweber and Mailchimp enjoy a great reputation among marketers. I have rarely seen my email broadcasts reaching spam folders. They are good at what they do.

The top-most job of any email marketing company is to ensure that your email lands in the inbox and not spam. Bells and whistles come next!

The subject of my review today is a very new player in the market – Convert Fox.

I came to know about Convert Fox via AppSumo – a ‘Groupon’ like website for entrepreneurs offering lifetime deals on Software As A Service (SAAS) subscriptions and various digital products.

The review is being done on the latest stable builds of Windows 10 and Chrome v61.

ConvertFox is mammoth application. I have reviewed in it several sittings between my work and whenever I could elicit responses from ConvertFox makers. This is a genuine review and I am not being compensated for it.

ConvertFox is touted as an all-in-one tool. It currently consists of chat, email marketing, marketing automation. They also have chatbots and knowledge base planned in the near roadmap.

Convert Fox On-Boarding

The onboarding was straight forward. After a quick signup process you get a form to fill the project’s name and domain name.

Enter the name of project and domain name. Once you can click Create, you will be redirected to Step #2

Install the Java Script code manually. [I try not to install WordPress plugins for such simple purposes unless they provide additional functionality.]

Both the steps above won’t take more than 2 minutes.

Navigation is neatly arranged on the left side.

As I navigated the interface, a consistent and weird issue I found was that most of the menu navigation items needed two clicks to perform an action and this happened randomly throughout the web app. The interface was slow to respond consistently.

Setup Guide

To make sure you have all the right settings in place before you embark on your marketing automation journey, Convert Fox has provided a Setup Guide. Let us start with the Setup tab and then we will move in the hierarchical top-down order shown in the gif above.

Clicking the Setup-Guide icon on the left side, you will find a screen similar to this.

Let us go through all the steps.

Install ConvertFox

By now, you must have installed the JavaScript code in your site. If not, do that now, otherwise none of the following steps would work for you.

Customize LiveChat appearance

You can set up pre-filled greetings and background color for your chat window. I prefer plain color over gradients.

Create your first chat prompt

Use this to set trigger conditions for your chat prompts. You can choose from several conditions.

Complete Profile

It’s a good idea to have your basic bio set up in your profile. People like talking to faces not robots.

Invite Teammates

Here you can invite the teammates (agents) as per the limitations set by your plan.

Import Existing Subscribers

If you are migrating from some other email marketing provider to ConvertFox, you can import your subscribers in CSV format. Instructions for importing subscribers from commonly used ESPs like Aweber are present in the help docs.

I found some limitations and issues while importing subscribers

The top row in your CSV file should be lower case.
MS Excel Tip: Use =LOWER(<CellName>)

The names in top row should not have spaces in them.

All the dates should be in UNIX TIMESTAMP format. I hacked together an excel formula for those importing lists from Aweber. Let me know if you need that.

I had 21k+ double opt-in verified subscribers collected over several years. When I tried uploading the CSV file it errored out saying something to the tune of “Cannot import more than 1000 subscribers”. The co-founder was willing to help on this, he asked me to mail the list. I will update this section when the list gets uploaded.

The imported subscribers can be seen in the People tab, which will discuss a bit later.

Identify logged-in users and send custom properties

This will help you track your logged in users. This sound like a great feature for membership site owners to find out what paying members are doing within the site. You can possibly used this to target visitors the way Amazon does. This is what you viewed earlier… you may also be interested in….

Define a critical event using Event Visualizer

This would help you define events like button click, scroll depth, pages viewed etc. This is discussed in detail further down.

A basic setup of Convert Fox is done. It should now start collecting data from your site visitors.

Let us explore all the tabs available in the left navigation.

People

This screen contains a list of all your site visitors (and imported subscribers).

Once a list is imported, you will find several fields in the top navigation.

Quick Tip: To view various fields, you would need a horizontal scroll.

I found that the horizontal scroll in ConvertFox needs some smoothening and was difficult to perform using mouse alone so I tried using keyboard. While on the Mac OS, Shift + Scroll does the job from keyboard, there is no such built-in keyboard shortcut for Windows. However, you can emulate that using one of my favorite automation tools AutoHotKey. Here are some more cool automations you can do with AutoHotKey.
Here is a AutoHotKey script for Windows horizontal scroll.

; Shift + Mouse Wheel for horizontal scrolling
+WheelDown::WheelRight
+WheelUp::WheelLeft

People screen consists of lots of interesting data which will be helpful for you when you create user-segments later.

Chat

The basic chat functionality works as it should work. I will not discuss the regular features found in all the website chat apps.

One of the features of Intercom (a well-funded ConvertFox competitor) I like is that the agent can continue the conversation even after the visitor shuts the chat window. This is sent as a threaded conversation, so when user replies to the email or goes to chat it shows up in the old conversation history itself. Pretty Cool! While ConvertFox does have a similar “conversation going” feature, it didn’t work for me at all. The support team informed that this is going to be fixed soon.

Agent View

From the chat agent perspective, there are features like Saved Replies and Notes. Your team can save answers to some of the frequently asked questions and then use those answers for future. While the feature is undoubtedly good, I would suggest ConvertFox dev team to have a look at Zendesk Chat, their implementation is snappy from the point-of-view of agent.

The agent can also view the complete history of the visitor. When a user initiates a second chat, the agent side interface should show straightaway whether she is a returning user or not. Again, this is bit convoluted. The conversation history and notes (if any) can be shown in the right side instead of an extra step of clicking user profile.

Visitor View

A new visitor gets an in-chat email lead tool. So that the agent can continue the conversation even when the visitor has gone away.

Desktop experience is fine however it can be more fluid. Visitors can make use of emojies and upload files during a chat session.

I find the mobile visitor interface clunky. There is no arrow button to send your message, so you have to rely on the keyboard return button. (left side shot below)

The pop-up where ConvertFox asks for the email address, it is jumpy (for the lack of better word) and gets crowded because of the presence of ConvertFox watermark. (right side shot above)

Emails

Things will start to get interesting here. You will get to experience the marketing automation features that were only available with tools worth thousands of dollars.

You can create
Auto messages
,
Broadcast messages
and
Campaigns
. In all the three cases, you can target your visitors based on their actions and behavior. Also, in all the cases you can add rules to segment users. I hit a bug during segmenting. I wanted to select Email during segmenting but by mistake selected Name. I tried to remove the Name rule but it won’t go away. Check the animation below where I am trying to click on X sign.

The email compose editor is nice. You can see the preview on the right side. The test email I sent looked good on desktop and was responsive on mobile.

One of the interesting features I found and liked was pre-header text.

A pre-header is a short summary text that follows the subject line when an email is viewed in the inbox.

Among other email providers, Gmail supports pre-header text. When creating an email in ConvertFox, you can customize what to appear in the pre-header text.

ConvertFox use Sendgrid and Mailgun as their SMTP servers for all outgoing emails. The From email becomes yourname@projectname.convertfoxmail.com. I like the thought that they have segregated all From emails by using a sub-domain for every project, this however can result in a problem when convertfoxmail starts sending emails in huge quantity. Few bad players on ConvertFox may result in poor deliverability for all and the whole domain convertfoxmail.com may be flagged by ISPs for spam.

My suggestion would be to allow all users the From address from their own domain name itself and we should then use SPF and DKIM records on our DNS.

Auto-Messages

With Auto-Messages, you can create behavior-driven or event based emails. So you can now send an email to someone who a) landed on your sales page, b) clicked the Signup button but c) didn’t purchase from you. There can be several use cases, perhaps limited only by your imagination.

It can be used to send onboarding messages or may be to just get feedback from your subscribers based on subscriber’s actions and attributes. This will however be dependent upon the web-hooks and how efficiently ConvertFox can integrate with your app of choice.

Broadcasts

I won’t get into the detail since Broadcasts is a regular feature with most ESPs. One feature that stands out is this

With ConvertFox you can re-send emails to people who couldn’t open your first email. This is a extremely powerful marketing. To date, Aweber still doesn’t have this feature and you have to jump several hoops to accomplish the same task.

Campaigns

Here you can create a series of emails that can be delivered over intervals to educate and build trust with your subscribers.

Automations

This is where you can set IF THIS THEN THAT kind of rules.

On the left side are the triggers and on the right side are actions.

A user has completed a campaign? Send him to another one. A visitor has clicked an Order Link? Apply a tag “hot lead”.

Events

This is the place where you can do micro-automations and can target every button, link or a page on your website. If you have a developer bent of mind, you can use Events tab or if you prefer point-and-click, use Event Visualizer.

In my testing, Event Visualizer was slow to respond. Also, I could find some obvious bugs.

If I was trying to define an event at the bottom of a page, the definition popup was stuck at the top which made it cumbersome.

The black bar got hidden behind the WordPress top admin tool bar. Look out for the z-index devs!

Events Visualizer didn’t report any event for me. On checking with support I was told it is not included with the AppSumo plan. Bummer! All I can do is to track the page views on my site.

Settings

Most of the settings available in this tab are self explanatory. I found a messenger setting which deserves a mention.

I currently use ZenDesk chat. To make it work on specific pages, I have to hack together a if-then PHP script in the header. With ConvertFox the process is very simple. Just enter the relative URL and you are set. CF messenger will only be visible on the pages defined above. Path accepts regular expressions as well.

Pricing

It is difficult to have a apples-to-apples comparison between various marketing automation tools since you won’t find a complete intersection of features.

If I still have to make a comparison, for a 10,000 subscribers plan, ConvertFox charges $149/month, Drip charges $124/month (but they don’t offer messenger) and Intercom charges $563/month. I have included the highest level plan for all the companies.

Given it’s a fledgling startup, ConvertFox may want to have a re-look at their pricing plans. My suggestion for them is to start with a lower price, increase pricing as you include more features, polish the current ones and get better visibility in market. Get your early users grandfathered in your older plans.

Summing It All

This review has already gone beyond 3000 words and I still feel I can write more! This is one of the biggest apps that I have reviewed. In case any interesting feature is still left out, I will update the review as and when I encounter it.
The premise on which this tool is made is awesome. You get the functionality of five-tools-in-one. ConvertFox provides Chat, Autoresponder, Marketing automation in a single tool and all of them talk to each other. The true power of such tools can only be realized once they open the tool for integrations and have web-hooks available. According to the published road-map, they are soon going to release meeting scheduler (BookLikeABoss little cousin :)), chat bots and web-hooks.

A major thing missing in the suite is Optin-forms. If I were to run such a company I will start with optin forms. While in-chat lead forms are good, you just can’t replace the utility of optin forms in 2017.

My wish list for ConvertFox would also include co-browsing and cross-domain tracking. Co-browsing means that you can view the exact activity of visitor on your site and interact with the visitor on their web browser. Cross domain tracking will immensely help those who have sales pages on different websites but conversion happens on a main (single) website.

Here is a summary of suggestions, bugs and issues I found in the app.

Most of the menu navigation items needed two clicks to perform an action and this happened randomly throughout the web app. The interface was slow to respond consistently.

Horizontal scroll needs to be more fluid.

Continuity conversation on chat should be fixed.

Live chat customizer needs the ability to enter hex codes.

Better mobile interface as described in detail above. For reference, I love the Intercom and Crisp.im mobile chat experience.

Rules dialog box during segmenting should get deleted when clicked on X.

Need the ability to directly import lists from major ESPs. The CSV download-format-import is a convoluted process.

Provide users with the ability to use their own From field and SPF/DKIM for better email deliverability.

Opt-in forms should be made available like yesterday.

I really want the team behind ConvertFox to succeed. One of the reasons is personal, I love to see good product based startups coming from India.
I will come back to this review in 40-50 days time to recheck all the issues mentioned above. I wish I can strike-off all of them by that time.

Review For AppSumo – lings

The price point at which ConvertFox is offered on AppSumo, it becomes a no brainer. However, I will keep an eye on the developments for the next 60 days. Here are things to note.

You get 15,000 emails per month. You can pay $5 per 10k extra emails. Emails are hard-cost for a company and this makes complete sense.

3 team members (or chat agents) are included with the plan. Given Sumolings are paying a one time cost, I feel it is fair. However ConvertFox may look at increasing this limit by a couple agents for people buying the $29 add-on.

The pricing comparison page on AppSumo doesn’t seem to be conveying the whole story. It looks like Sumolings are getting all features available with the Pro plan but that is hardly the case.

Events Visualizer is NOT included with the plan. This is huge. I feel the basic premise of automation is lost if this feature is not included in AppSumo plan. In my opinion, ConvertFox can limit Events the way they have done for emails and automations but they should definitely include a taste of it in the plan. They may also make the up-sell the way they have done for automation. A MUST HAVE FEATURE. [Update: After a conversation with the founders, it looks like providing some events is not feasible for them due to the way Events feature is written.]

MagicPeek (or MagicType) is not available in the plan. MagicPeek allows an agent to see what a visitor is typing even before he has hit the submit button on chat. It is good to have but I can live without it.

Automations are limited to 5 free automations and additional are available as an upgrade at $29 for 20 automations. I saw several people having this question, “how many add-ons should we go after?”. I feel for most of the people an extra add-on/site should do the trick.

Get ConvertFox Here!

Update Nov 15, 2017: ConvertFox is offering lifetime accounts at $49. On top of this they are offering several addons depending on your needs:

A lifetime ultimate add-on which consists of extra 10,000 emails per month (total becomes 25,000), 1 extra agent (total becomes 4 agents) and unlimited automations for $99.

A lifetime automation addon to add 20 automations for $29.

A lifetime email addon to get 100,000 emails for $29.

My suggestion is to go for the $49 core deal and the $99 addon. A marketing automation suite with similar set of features is worth several thousands dollars. Go get the bargain offer before they shut it down.

Over To You

Have you started using ConvertFox? What do you like/dis-like about it? How do you compare it with your current marketing automation and messenger tool?

Recently we migrated one of our sites to the Hostgator Cloud servers. Things went pretty smooth, except that we faced a peculiar issue.

While trying to navigate to our support desk which is powered by osTicket, the browser started downloading the web page instead of opening it.

We tried searching online but none of the answers fixed our issue. Yeah, Stack Exchange didn’t work this time.

Given my experience of web mastering sites for several years, when any peculiar issue arise, I first try to look into
.htaccess
files used by the erring applications.

Indeed this turned out to be the culprit.

The
.htaccess
file used by osTicket was using PHP 5.3

# Use PHP 5.3
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php53 .php

while the script demands at least PHP 5.4

We simply went ahead and changed the handler to PHP 5.6 and the issue got resolved.

# Use PHP 5.6
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php56 .php

Check why Slimstats is an elegant tool to track paid members activity on your WP site. Track by name, IP, visited pages, OS, device and more!

The post Tracking Your WordPress Membership Site Users appeared first on Review Of Web.

Have you ever wanted to track what your WordPress membership site users are doing within your site? What pages are they viewing? Which browsers or OS are they logging-in from? What material are they downloading from the site?

Your off-the-top-of-your-head answer would be Google Analytics, right?

Alas, that’s a WRONG choice. Google Analytics is not an option AT ALL.

But…

Why you may want to track the activity of your membership site users?

We have been using a membership plugin called DAP for almost 8 years now. The technical side of it has worked pretty well for us. We were able to develop our own payment gateway integrations, auto-responder integrations, SMTP integrations, Single Sign On (SSO) to a 3rd party support desk solution.
Except for some hiccups we faced with how it is designed (which is perhaps a topic for another day), DAP has worked pretty well for the most part in the last 8 years.

While most of these things remain under-the-hood for our end-users, my team silently keeps churning features to ensure happy experience for our end users and trainees.

There can be various reasons why you may want to track your membership site users:

You can pro-actively find their system configuration to provide better technical support.

You may find out at which video/module the users of your course start to drop-off or start slacking. Such data can be immensely helpful in redesigning a course.

You may track a member activity within your WordPress site for security reasons.

Tag them to sell the kind of products they may be interested in. This is exactly what Amazon has been doing with us for several years now.

Why not Google Analytics?

That is the first thought that crossed my mind. Google Analytics is the #1 website analytics solution. It is used by small time bloggers to Fortune 500 companies. BuiltWith, a website that tracks what software is used on websites across the internet, claims that Google Analytics is used on a staggering 27.9 million of the total websites.

I explored further in the direction and I found this policy from Google Analytics

Take note of the policies highlighted above:

You will not upload any data that allows Google to personally identify an individual (such as certain names, social security numbers, email addresses, or any similar data), or data that permanently identifies a particular device (such as a mobile phone’s unique device identifier if such an identifier cannot be reset).

If you upload any data that allows Google to personally identify an individual, your Google Analytics account can be terminated, and you may lose your Google Analytics data.

Essentially if you want to track a specific member, Google doesn’t allow you to do that. While Google may have their legitimate and legal reasons to not track users on an individual basis, I, as the membership site owner don’t find anything wrong with it. As long as I am not selling/sharing my member’s data with a 3rd party and have taken their consent during registration, I don’t mind tracking the paid users for their own benefit.

What tracking solution do we use?

WordPress has a mind-boggling 30,000 free plugins in its repository. Add to that, the equal numbers which are not listed in official repository and sold on market places like ThemeForest. With 60k plugins, you can be sure that the problem that you are encountering in your WordPress set-up has been already solved.

This, however, creates its own problem.

The Problem Of Plenty.

Sifting through tons of options to check which of them are able to do EXACTLY what we want and fit within our budget is an humongous task.

We tested several plugins and finally we met WP SlimStats.

This is a full blown comprehensive tracking solution. As can be seen in the screenshot above, SlimStats can track the visitor activity by WordPress username, IP, country, browser, OS, system resolution, date time and more.

SlimStats allows me to track user-specific activity.

SlimStats has been in active development for 10 years now and has 100,000+ downloads on official WordPress repository.

SlimStats has wide variety of add-ons like Heatmap, usertracking, IP to address converter and more. All paid add-ons comes with one-time payment option with no recurring payments for future updates.

It is lightweight and highly configurable plugin. WordPress website analytics solutions are generally infamous and known to be memory/CPU hogging so much so that managed WordPress hosts like WPEngine do not even allow them on their servers. Slimstats, however, seems pretty lightweight. It has been over a week that we have been using SlimStats on our membership site. We have not noticed any major spikes in CPU/RAM consumption due to its usage. Having said that, ensure not to keep infinite history of tracking logs and do not keep the SlimStats dashboard open all the time.

How to integrate DAP and WP SlimStats?

Integration between DigitalAccessPass (DAP) and SlimStats is quite straightforward. You just need to enable sync between DAP user data and WordPress. SlimStats will start doing the job.

To setup this integration, go to DAP Admin > Setup > Config > WordPress related fields.

Mark “Sync DAP User Data to WordPress” to Yes and mark “Sync Paid Users Only to WordPress” to No

Slimstats will start tracking your membership site users. The tracked data can be seen in WordPress dashboard.

Over To You

Do you use any tracking solution for your membership site? What is the most important metric for a membership site? What else do you want in a tracking solution? Let me know your thoughts below.

PS: We don’t have affiliation with WP SlimStats in any manner except that we are one of their happy users.

HTTP to HTTPS. Step by step instructions to move your WordPress website to SSL. Where to get SSL, how to fix mixed content warnings and more.

The post [15 Steps] How to migrate WordPress from HTTP to HTTPS? appeared first on Review Of Web.

Love it or hate it, the internet thrives on the directions set by Google and its allied products. SEOs and webmasters all over the world keep a close eye on every little announcement that comes from Google. Lately, the internet is mass moving from HTTP to HTTPS.

As the launch of Chrome v56 is inching closer, I finally took a plunge and migrated ReviewOfWeb to
HTTPS

Why SSL?

tldr;
SSL
makes your site secure, looks trustworthy in the eye of the visitor and stops any kind of man-in-the-middle attacks.

[Throughout this article the terms HTTPS and SSL would be used interchangeably.]

Since the last couple of years, Google has been on the forefront for accelerating the growth of SSL adoption. They even announced SSL as one of the 200+ Google search engine ranking factors.

As part of the moving towards more secure web initiative, in Sep 2016, folks at Google Chrome announced that beginning January 2017, web pages that are

served over plain HTTP and

accept sensitive info like passwords and credit card details will be marked as Not Secure in the chrome browser URL bar.

The blog post goes on to say that this policy will eventually be extended to the whole website and not only the sensitive pages.

As of Jan 28, 2017, the latest stable Chrome build is 55.0.2883.87. Chrome 56 is expected to be launched in the week beginning Jan 31st, 2017.

If you run an eCommerce site, a membership site or any other system that accepts or sign-up members, you SHOULD act fast. The Not secure warning may make your site look untrustworthy in the eye of a visitor and hence lower your conversion rates and cost you money.

How to move HTTP to HTTPS?

Here are the steps you can take to make your site https compliant and make it HTTPS Everywhere.

1. Get and Install SSL

I personally feel SSL certificates are outrageously priced. The SSL industry requires a lot of clean up. Till that happens, here is how you can acquire an SSL certificate for free or at a low cost.

If you run your site on web hosts like SiteGround ,you’re in luck. SiteGround and some others have integrated the free LetsEncrypt SSL in their dashboards. With them, getting a new SSL certificate is about ticking a check-box. Thereafter renewal of SSL certificate is completely automated. SiteGround has gone a step further and is now auto-issuing SSL certificates for all new domains set up on its servers.

ReviewOfWeb is hosted on a business shared hosting plan of Hostgator. Hostgator provides SSL and a dedicated IP free for the complete duration of your account with them.

If you are on some other web host, check if they support LetsEncrypt and whether they charge anything extra for SSL installation.

If for some reason whatsoever, your host does not support LetsEncrypt or doesn’t provide you a free SSL, you can buy an inexpensive PositiveSSL certificate from NameCheap. They cost around $9 a pop. Once purchased, you can ask your web host to install the SSL for you.

Bonus Tip: If your web host provides support for SNI, you don’t need a dedicated IP to install SSL.

2. Why Not the free Cloudflare SSL?

Cloudflare works as a reverse proxy server. In plain English, it means that all your traffic passes through them before it reaches your web hosting server.

When I tried Cloudflare a few years back. I have had issues with it using Google AdSense and discrepancy in Analytics logs.

There is another issue which concerns SSL. The free SSL offered by CloudFlare does not encrypt the whole length of the connection between your browser and origin (your server).

The free SSL does encrypt the connection between your browser and Cloudflare. It does NOT encrypt the connection between CloudFlare and origin server. If you plan to accept credit cards in your websites, your site won’t be PCI DSS compliant on the free CloudFlare plans.

Given these facts, I never thought of trying it again. I am sure over the years, they must have resolved some of my complaints. Maybe I will have a relook at Cloudflare sometime but for now, it is not an option.

3. Test SSL

Once you have the SSL installed on your server, check it on SSL Labs. You just need to enter the domain name and make sure the certificate gets at least an A grade.

4. Do you use CDN? (Hint: You Should)

If you use CDN, make sure you enable HTTPS on your CDN. Fortunately, our CDN provider MaxCDN has made this dead simple. You can check a box and all your CDN content will be served over HTTPS. Since this is a basic requirement, I am sure any CDN –worth its salt- of your choice will have this feature already, just ask!

Having SSL CDN already enabled on my domain made the migration to HTTPS much easier than I thought. The best thing about using SSL enabled CDN is that all your CSS files, JS files, and images are served directly from the CDN itself. Thus, you avoid mixed content warnings.

5. SSL your Admin

It is a good idea to first check whether your WordPress admin area works fine on SSL.

You can force the WP admin area to use HTTPS. Open the wp-config.php and enter this snippet.

define('FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true);

You should now see a green padlock for your WP admin area.

6. Configure WP Dashboard

Go to your WordPress dashboard > Settings > General. Change your WordPress address and Site address to HTTPS.

7. 301 Redirect from HTTP to HTTPS

301 is considered a permanent redirect universally. Open your website’s .htaccess file and use this snippet to 301 redirect all your incoming HTTP links to HTTPS.

#Sets the rewrite engine to On
RewriteEngine On

#Checks if link is not already https
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off

#if not https make a permanent redirect to https
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

8. Change All Internal Links

Use this awesome free plugin – Velvet Blues Update URLs – to migrate all internal links present in your WordPress database.

Take a backup of your WordPress Database. Make sure you check all boxes except the last one.

It took less than a minute and this plugin changed all links inside posts, pages, links, attachments to https. You can safely deactivate/delete this plugin once the job is successfully completed.

Several people have mentioned Really Simple SSL but it doesn’t do any database changes. It relies on server and JavaScript redirects, which according to me can affect your site’s performance.

Flush the Cache from WP Rocket, WP Super Cache or your caching plugin.

9. This is How It Should Look

Once you have the SSL enabled for your site and if everything goes fine, your Google Chrome browser should show a green padlock in the browser URL bar.

10. Mixed Content Warnings?

There are strong chances you may get mixed content warnings when you enable SSL for the first time.

If you find the ⓘ icon in URL bar instead of the green padlock, in all probability, your web page has an issue with mixed contents. It means that one or more of your CSS, JS, image, video files are being served from an HTTP location instead of HTTPS location. To find the source of warning, you can use either of the two options:

The Easier option: WhyNoPadLock? Just enter the offending URL and it will show you the complete results.

If you have a web developer’s bent-of-mind and like being more hands-on: Launch Google Chrome inspector console.
Here is a pictorial step-by-step way to reach the exact source of warning:

I suggest you do this check – manually – for all your important pages like Home page, landing pages, sales pages and checkout pages. Once satisfied with the important pages, you can go on to do a bulk automated mixed-content-warnings check using online tools like SSL Check from JitBit or downloadable tools like HTTPS Checker.

11. Go to CDN Once Again

By now, things should be pretty stable. Go to your CDN provider again to do one last thing.

Change the origin URL to HTTPS.

12. Make Changes in Google Search Console

Add the HTTPS site to Google search console (formerly known as Google Webmasters tool). As per Google:

If you migrate your site from HTTP to HTTPS, Google treats this as a site move with a URL change. This can temporarily affect some of your traffic numbers.

Add the HTTPS property to Search Console; Search Console treats HTTP and HTTPS separately; data for these properties is not shared in Search Console. So if you have pages in both protocols, you must have a separate Search Console property for each one.

If you have disavowed links in the past, make sure you move them over to the new https location in search console. You can simply download the previous disavowed links file and upload it to the new property.

Add a sitemap to the newly added property in Search Console.

The change-of-address setting doesn’t apply for HTTP -> HTTPS moves.

13. Migrate in Google Analytics

For Google analytics, you don’t need to create a new profile. However, you need to switch HTTP to HTTPS at a couple of places.

Go to Google Analytics dashboard

Click on the Admin tab on the top right.

In the middle column, choose the property from the drop-down and click Property Settings.

Change the default URL to HTTPS.

Click on the small arrow ↰ on the left side to go back to the Analytics admin home. Click View Settings.

Change the website’s URL to HTTPS for all the views you have for a given property.

Add annotation in Google Analytics for your reference and to keep track of the date when you added SSL to your site.

14. Change ALL Links in Your Control

While external links may be out of your reach and control, try to change as many links as possible to HTTPS version of your site.

If you use services like ManageWP, iThemes Sync or uptime monitoring tools, update your site’s URL in the respective dashboards.

Go to your social media profiles and change the profile links. Facebook page, Twitter handle, YouTube channel, Stack Exchange, Github profile, LinkedIn profile etc.

If you run any ad campaigns on Facebook, Adwords etc, it’s a good time to update URLs on those.

Keep an eye on your backlinks from 3rd party websites and get those updated to https if possible.

Bonus Tip 15. Update Google CSE [Added Later]

This may sound trivial but it turned out to be a major source of inconvenience for us and out visitors. We use Google Custom search engine for several of our web properties. Since several weeks after implementing SSL , whenever someone would search for any string, say, ssl on wordpress, it was getting auto-transformed to
ssl%20on%20wordpress

It was when we took out time to check the whole code we realized that at one place inside Google CSE we have not converted http to https.

If you use Google CSE, here is what you should do. Login to Google CSE dashbooard > Look and feel > Save and Get Code > Search Results Details. Change your site URL from http to https as shown below.

A friend of mine runs a fairly popular ladies-only buy-sell Facebook group with around 40,000 members. While her group is free for members, businesses wanting to promote their items-for-sale can list their items on her Facebook group for a small fee.

Things were going fine for her until one of the business owners told her that she can’t ask for money from business owners to post on her group and what she is doing is illegal and possibly she needs a “commercial” Facebook license. He went on to quasi-threaten her that if some people report her group to Facebook, her group may get shut. She was understandably hurt and sought my help.

Getting a direct answer from Facebook is next to impossible. There are few threads in FB help section that were answered by members. Mostly they are filled with contradicting opinions.

These are the points I could gather from my research.

At 4.4 Facebook in their terms-of-service document, clearly mentions that

You will not use your personal timeline primarily for your own commercial gain, and will use a Facebook Page for such purposes.

I couldn’t find a single official document regarding terms-of-use of Facebook groups. Given that FB is fine with using a Facebook page for commercial gain and there is no mention about groups, I am taking an assumption that they extend that policy to FB groups as well.

Additionally, here are some of my reasons –

An FB group is an opt-in group. Members explicitly ask for admin’s permission to join the group. Members have clear knowledge of what they will be getting after joining the group. Even after joining the group they can opt-out of it with a single click. Clearly, anything relevant to the group topic, posted on the group by admin cannot be termed as spamming.

FB admin is responsible for maintenance, moderation and in general tone of the group. All such activities take time. If an admin asks for money from other business owners who in-turn will be benefitting from it commercially. In my opinion, it clearly makes sense.

All said and done, I would strongly suggest all Facebook group owners to never base your business attached on the whims of the 3rd party. Make sure you have a backup plan.

Disclaimer: Please take this article as a friendly opinion and not as a legal advise. I am not a lawyer. All of the above is MY understanding of this topic.

In this day and age, when all businesses – big enterprises to the next door grocery store – are connected online, this is the number #1 advice I want to give to all budding entrepreneurs.

Get Yourself A Professional Looking Email and take its backup regularly. Read on for details.

johndoe@example.com
looks much better than
loverboyjohn16@hotmail.com

I have been managing my online businesses for 10+ years now. The first thing I notice when I receive an unknown solicitation is the email address. So an email from
coolguy2020@bmail.com
sets a mental flag in my head and in all probability that is the end to the conversation. The unknown email solicitations I receive are mostly from tech oriented people. A technical person not serious enough to secure himself a pro email, won’t be really serious with his business.

Email from free services like Gmail, Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo are absolutely fine if you use them for personal mailing purposes to friends and family. For any other use, get yourself a professional email.

Other than looking unprofessional, here is another solid reason why you should NEVER rely on free email service providers.

Why You Should Not Rely on Free Email Services

You may be booted out any time with no explanation whatsoever. There are chances you may inadvertently violate one of the terms-of-service (TOS) and you may be shutdown forever. Irrespective of who is right or wrong, it is YOU who will suffer at the end when fighting with behemoths like Google or Microsoft. If such a thing happens with your Gmail account, all your connected Google docs, blogger blogs, Google photos, Google voice account will be shut down in an instant. This has happened | to several | people and can happen to anyone of us.

You may ask, even a premium service provider can shut you down for such a terms-of-service violation. Yes, that is very much a possibility but here comes the big difference. You OWN the control to your domain and MX records. In an unfortunate instance of your premium email getting shut-down from one of the service providers, you just need to migrate to another email service provider, change the MX record from your domain registrar or DNS service provider and your email is LIVE again in a matter of minutes.

Which Email service I use?

After buying a domain, the first thing I do is to get an email from Google’s G Suite (formerly Google Apps for Work) – that’s Google suite which consists of Gmail, Google Docs and other services. When you sign up for G Suite, you get name specific email ids for at $5/month/email (or Rs 220/month/email) while generic email ids like
admin@example.com
are free. It is quite inexpensive and provides all the usability, security and spam prevention of Gmail that we have been used to over the years.

Click here to get 20% discount coupon for GSuite.

Do I still need to take precaution?

Yes. GSuite account should be in the name of business or co-founders. Novice business owners let their employees/IT person register Gsuite in their personal name which is a big blunder to start with. Super administrator in GSuite has absolute powers on your organization’s emails. As far as possible, super administrator should be one of the co-founders in an organization.

One of my friends runs an IT firm out of Mumbai, India. He had to fire his IT guy after some dispute. My friend’s mistake? He forgot to reset the IT guy’s roles and capabilities in GSuite. They had to run after him to get it restored.

Here is another case in Indianapolis where the fired IT employee offered to unlock data for $200,000.

If your organization is in need for GSuite solution and you are looking for more than 100 licenses, I can put you in touch with some reputed G-suite partners or if my IT team has bandwidth to take work we can help you. Contact us with relevant details.

What happens to my old data in case my premium Email Service Provider shuts me down?

When compared to free services, the possibility of premium services shutting you down without notice is quite low. Premium services normally come with SLAs, TOS which are different compared to free services.

Still it is better-to-be-safe-than-sorry.

I take backup of all my major email accounts using the inexpensive Spanning Backup. Spanning backs-up my email account on a daily basis in the background without me lifting a finger. Given that Spanning stores an unlimited backup, it can even help if you want to get an email that you have deleted by mistake.

Here are 3 rules-of-thumb you should follow if you run a business online.

Keep your points of failure segregated as much as possible. In my case, my domain registrar, DNS service provider, WebHost, CDN and email service provider are different organizations unrelated to each other. In case anyone of them goes bust or tries to shut me down for any reason whatsoever, I can easily switch to the competitor without losing my money and my sleep.

Have backup or a failover strategy for anything you do online. Run a WordPress site? Back it up using BackupBuddy Gold. Run an eCommerce store? Have another payment gateway ready with all paperwork done in advance.

Enable two factor authentication on all your service providers.

Over To You

What is one thing you would like to tell to a new entrepreneur? Do you agree that even today email remains the most critical aspect of business online?

How to noindex a URL in htaccess file using a simple latest directive by Google. Most useful for affiliate redirect URLs.

There can be several reasons you may want to
noindex
a web page/URL. There may be password protected pages which you don’t want to be seen in search results or pages where you want that only your web admin should have access or affiliate URLs redirecting to another webpage.

First, what do we mean by noindex?

noindex
simply means that you don’t want a web page or a link to show up on search engine results pages.

Most of the times it can be accomplished by setting a meta tag on the web page. WordPress users have this covered when they use plugins like Yoast SEO or All-In-One-SEO which provide capability to do so on a per page/post basis.

Here is the syntax used before the closing
</head>
tag in a web page using meta robots tag.

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, FOLLOW">

How to use htaccess file to noindex a URL?

For one of my websites, I run affiliate programs for others to participate. The issue was that the affiliate URLs were getting indexed in Google search results. The affiliate URL in my case had the structure –

http://www.example.com/aff/a/?a=786&p=mysite.com/product1/

As can be seen above, there is no way to implement meta tag directly in the page for this kind of URL. Fortunately, Google supports another not-widely-known method to
noindex
a page using
X-Robots-Tag
directive in the
HTTP Header
.

This is normally done in Apache config files but most of the regular webmasters host their websites on shared web hosts. Shared web hosts rarely provide access to Apache config files, however you can still create or access
htaccess
file in the respective directories.

htaccess
file rules are applied recursively which means that in the current example,
htaccess
file residing in /a/ folder will supersede
htaccess
file residing in /aff/ folder which will in turn supersede
htaccess
file in the domain root directory. In short, if similar a rule resides in /a/ folder and /aff/ folder , the rule in /a/ folder will take precedence.

To
noindex
any URL containing the structure shown above, I will go to /a/ folder, download the
htaccess
file (or will create a new file in case it doesn’t exist) and add this at the top of the file.

Header set X-Robots-Tag "noindex, follow"

We are asking search engines to not index the URL but follow the links.

We will use HTTP Header checker tool to verify the implementation. This is the response we get.

As can be seen in the rectangle marked above, header shows the response as
X-Robots-Tag => noindex, follow

Over To You?

Have you faced such a situation before? How did you resolve the issue?

Here is how you can fix the weird characters that are showing up on yoiur wordpress blog after host migration or perhaps a wordpress database migration.

I use the powerful BackupBuddy plugin by iThemes to take a regular automated backup of all my sites. This plug-in also doubles up as a web host migration tool. This time when I cloned one of my wordpress based sites to a staging environment, I started seeing lots of weird characters in the article like these  ⠀

Essentially the older WordPress blogs that were created before WordPress v2.3 didn’t use to specify the default character set for character encoding hence the WordPress tables were created with the default set of MySQL installation which was
latin1
. The
wp-config
file that shipped with the earlier versions didn’t have character encoding info inside it.

Post v2.3, WordPress started using the omnipresent
utf-8
character encoding for the MySql installation. This conflict between character encoding turned out to be the cause for such weird characters inside my site’s articles.

While the fact finding was tough, the fix was quite simple:

Just add these two lines to the wp-config.php file present in the root directory of your wordpress installation and your site will be back to normal.

define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8'); /* Database Charset to use in creating database tables. */
define('DB_COLLATE', ''); /* The Database Collate type. Don't change this if in doubt. */

Update Aug 2020: On one of our oldest sites that started in 2008, this issue surfaced for the first time. There were some old plugins that used
latin1
encoding, even using the fix above didn’t work. We used the
latin1
character encoding, and all weird character issues were gone.

define('DB_CHARSET', 'latin1');
define('DB_COLLATE', '');

If you have little bit of interest in programming, you should definitely learn more about character encoding. Joel Spolsky, CEO of StackExchange has explained in depth about this topic. You can also learn more about character encoding in the video below

Like any other business offline or online, a website is ALL about user experience. Even if you have the best content available on your site, it would be of little use, if you provide poor user experience on it. For anyone in need of better rankings for their site , all major search engines have been stressing this point time-and-again.

One of the best ways to go from good-to-great user experience is to make sure that your website is able to load fast. While this article is written keeping in mind wordpress CMS but in general it is applicable for any site employing any content management system.

There are various ways to ensure good speed for your wordpress powered website. The regular ones among them being; making use of good web-hosting, ensuring gZip compression, enabling cache for your static content (using a plug-in like WP Super Cache), minifying CSS and JavaScript files, optimizing images for web, minimizing DNS look up time.

All techniques mentioned above are good for boosting speed but all of them are limited by one important factor – your web hosting provider.

Imagine a visitor is browsing your site from Australia and you host your site in one of the web hosting companies of US. Every time, he loads your site, there is a round trip involved from Australia-US-Australia which can result in a lot of processing time for your website aka poor user experience. Now imagine your webhost has put all your static files in various servers across the world. A user in Australia won’t need to fetch the site content all the way from US, rather he would be fetching it from the nearest physical server available for him. This is the essence of CDN.

What is a CDN?

CDN is an abbreviation for Content Delivery Network. In all probability, any big site you come across your daily life would be using CDN. With increase in competition and decrease in hosting costs, CDN services are becoming popular among small and medium size businesses as well. Check the video below on how your site can be made to run faster using a CDN.

Why Every WordPress Site should be on a CDN?

WordPress powers almost 20% of the sites on the web (and that is a conservative estimate). While being one of the easiest CMS, it starts to drag when you start adding fancy themes and plug-ins on top of it. All these themes, plug-ins comes with their own set of baggage (read CSS, JavaScript, image files) A CDN’s job is to pull all such static files and distribute them to servers (called Edge locations) across the world. With CDN implemented, any given visitor on a site would be served content from the nearest geographical location of the Edge servers and thus will be able to access the content quickly.

As seen above, CDN will not only help you speed-up your website but will also help in reducing your bandwidth usage (ultimately lower bills, if you are on a metered hosting plan)

There are tons of CDN services available, which one should I choose?

There are several CDN providers available in the market today. Choosing one of them can be an uphill task especially if you are beginner to the market. There are experts who have made thorough comparison among the major service providers. I took help of the latest exhaustive tests conducted by TopTenReviews and by Gabriel.

When a small business or a bootstrapped company go shopping, they look for best bang for the buck, which means among factors like speed, Point Of Presence (POP), we have to give priority to pricing as well.

Compiling the tests above and keeping price factor in mind, Max CDN emerged as the winner for me.

Test Drive Max CDN on a WordPress Site

After being prima-facie satisfied with Max CDN , I took it for a test drive.

Here are my notes:

In my past 8 years of online business experience, I have used many services and interacted with support staff, I think I can say this without any ambiguity that Max CDN has ONE-Of-THE-BEST on-boarding process for a new user.

There are LIVE 24*7 , knowledgeable professionals available to chat with you at a click of a button.

As soon you are registered, you will be asked if you wish to join a 1-on-1 live call with a CDN support engineer.

You can even complete the steps yourself using the excellent step-by-step Getting Started Guide.

I took help of the getting starting guide. After activating Max CDN account, we need to create a pull zone. Following the on-screen instructions, this step shouldn’t take more than 3 mins. A CDN URL will be created for you automatically.

I use WP Super Cache for caching needs of this website. Following the instructions, it took 2 minutes to set it up. They have instructions for W3 Total Cache as well. In case you don’t find your favorite caching plug-in listed, you can check with chat support staff.

That’s it you have enabled CDN for your blog. You can confirm that by viewing the source of your blog.

Before you go on and celebrate, please wait for an important tweak. Now that your blog images are residing at more than one place, these can contribute to duplicate image issue as described at Google Webmaster blog. Please make sure to enable canonical headers on your CDN control panel as shown in the first image here. To make sure that canonical headers are indeed working as intended, make use of a HTTP response header. Grab the URL of any image which is now on CDN (like your blog’s logo image) and put that in the header checker above. The canonical tag should show the original URL where image is hosted.

I used Gtmetrix to measure the affect of CDN on this blog. Here are some stats (25% speed boost after implementing CDN )

Max CDN’s control panel is neatly divided in 4 parts.

Dashboard: Provides you a broad overview of your account.

Zones: Here you can create various types of zones like Pull, Push, Video and more. (Pull is the most popular zone)

Reports: This tab provides an exhaustive report on what is happening in your account, which edge locations are being called, detailed access logs and more.

Account: Here you can view details of storage stats, invoices, users. You can enable Max CDN API to connect to your app. It also provides a security tab where you can enable 2 step authentication for your Max CDN account via Google authenticator app.

Can Max CDN create a problem with Google Adsense or any other advertising program?

I don’t find a reason why Max CDN should interfere with Google Adsense or for that matter any other advertising program. The only difference before and after implementing CDN is that, now our static content like CSS and JavaScript files are being served from various servers across the world. These files have no bearing on codes provided by such advertising programs.

Can I use Max CDN on top of Cloudfare?

Technically, yes. However, you need to understand that Cloudfare primarily provides security to your website while Max CDN primary role is to provide speed boost. While the price tag of Cloudfare ($0) looks lucrative, If you are starting out, I would suggest you to not touch Cloudfare at this point – it may prove to be an over-kill. However, if you choose to go for Cloudfare or Sucuri Cloud proxy service, make sure to enable XFF under Pull Zone > Settings > Edge Settings

Ok, I also want to use Max CDN on my site. Is there any discount?

Sure. Follow these steps:

Go to this page on Max CDN site.

Choose one of the plans depending upon your site’s requirement. [For people starting out, the starter 100GB plan should be more than enough.]

Use the coupon code ROW to avail 25% life-time discount on all plans offered by Max CDN. They offer 30 days money back guarantee on all plans.
