On this episode, I am joined by Jeremy and Jake.  We  break down this Sunday’s SummerSlam card and give our predictions.  We also talk about some of our favorite SummerSlam moments from the past.

The entertainment industry reeled last week with the announcement of Bob Hoskin’s passing from pneumonia. Hoskins, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his work in “Mona Lisa,” expanded his repertoire to more light-hearted fare, for which he is best-known.

To remember the man, our redoubtable crew sat down and discussed some of his more memorable roles that helped shape our childhood cinema memories.

Kevin chose “Hook,” the Steven Spielberg film starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. Joe went a more modern route, choosing the 2006 film “Hollywoodland,” while Steve opted for a similar recent route in discussing the war film “Enemy at the Gates.”

Meanwhile, Matt went with a nostalgic choice, 1990’s “Mermaids.” And in Blake’s stead, we introduced a guest panel member, Allison, who brought a nice female perspective to the show and discussed “Spice World” among other interesting choices.

Hoskins had a lot of memorable roles, notably his performance as Eddie Valiant in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” He also had a few roles for which he likely would have wanted a mulligan (hello, “Super Mario Bros.”). Any way you look at it, though, he carved a legacy through his gruff voice and dominating persona that’s unlikely to be seen again any time soon.

So pour one out for Bob (and Blake), sit back, and reminisce about the life and times of Robert William Hoskins.

Fortunately for you listeners, we here at ReviewSTL are the epitome of uncool, and we have riches to share with you.

The sudden passing of Philip Seymour Hoffman was a sad but unfortunately all-too-common reminder of the struggles some people go through in facing addictions. Still, a wise man once told me it’s less important to remember how a person died than it is to remember how they lived. And to remember Philip, we went back and discussed some of his outstanding works.

The guys discuss almost all of his major roles, and delve into some of our favorites from Red Dragon, Almost Famous, The Master, Doubt and many more.

Rest in peace, Philip. You may no longer be with us, but you’ll never truly be gone.

So who doesn’t love football movies? More Communists.

Thankfully, here at ReviewSTL, we’re all about freedom, so in honor of the Super Bowl, we brought out some of our favorite (American) football movies.

We bring up some classics (“The Longest Yard,” “Brian’s Song”) and some more recent hits (“Any Given Sunday,” “Varsity Blues,” “The Waterboy,” “Friday Night Lights”). The Super Bowl may have ended as a blowout, but there are still plenty of football movies to tide you over until next season.

Scorsese, though, has continuously put out excellence in a career spanning decades. In honor of The Wolf of Wall Street, we pull out all the stops and recap some of our favorite Scorsese films.

Kevin takes us back in time to Taxi Driver, when Scorsese’s career was still nascent. Joey Butts moves us forward a decade with The Last Temptation of Christ. Steve discusses Martin’s first collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio in Gangs of New York, while Matt talks about Shutter Island. In Blake’s absence (RIP), special guest Jon talks about Hugo, Scorsese’s first venture into 3D film making.

Just kidding.

This week, we tackled what we considered our favorite films of the past year. 2013 had no shortage of quality films, and we were all able to find one or two in particular that were pleasing to our palates. Matt tackled outer space and the superlative Alfonso Cuaron work Gravity, while Joe stuck to his comic book origins and talked about Man of Steel. Blake discusses Her, as well some of his favorite comedies: The Spectacular Now and Enough Said.

Steve brought up a couple of personal favorites, the baseball narrative 42 and Captain Phillips, while Kevin discussed a slew of films, including American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

We even talk about some of our least favorite films of 2013, like the atrocious Getaway.

Seasons greetings from the ReviewSTL staff! In honor of Disney’s release of Frozen, we looked back on some of our favorite Disney animated films.

We talk about some of the classics from our childhoods like Aladdin and The Lion King, but we also go way back and talk about some of the older films that started it all, like Dumbo.

Steve brings out some of his useless trivia knowledge and talks about how some of our favorite classics were actually supposed to end. Cherished classics like Cinderella and The Little Mermaid were inspired by old allegories that had endings that were… well, let’s just say Disney cleaned them up a little bit. Even The Lion King had an ending that was different from what was originally envisioned.
