Rise of the Planet of the Apes

2011-08-06T11:22:00.000-07:00

This is essentially a B movie dressed up with an expensive production budget and an A-list cast. The events are simplistic and predictable, with nary a plot twist in the entire 105 minutes. Don't get me wrong, in spite of the predictability, the movie is still entertaining as all get out. As the action unfolds we clearly witness a detailed evolution that leads to a climatic battle. The buildup is beautifully done. The machinations are far fetched, but the intellectual advances of the chimps are presented in a most credible fashion. Not only will you accept a chimp could acquire super intelligence, but you'll cheer their ascension to power.

The tale's allure is thanks in no small part to the principal chimpanzee's emotionally engaging portrayal. Dispensing with makeup applied to human actors that has been the method in past installments, this reboot relies on major strides in computer technology to create the simian characters. The star chimpanzee, Caesar, is a brilliant use of CGI created from a motion-capture performance by Andy Serkis. Renowned as Gollum from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, he's crucial to the enjoyment of this science fiction. I'd actually go as far to say the full picture's success rests with him. It's a wonderfully expressive depiction. Caesar has an emotional progression that is comprehensive. A revolt becomes logical because his emotional trajectory is so believable. We truly mind what happens to this central figure since we're emotionally invested in his growth. Even a simple scene where he corrects the way Will's father holds a fork, is remarkably poignant.

Takers (2010)

2010-09-03T01:32:00.000-07:00

If there were an "absurdist heist" Oscar, then Takers would take. It is a pit of clichés: the weak link, meddling family members, troubled cops, and a love triangle. Top it all off with a camera as jerky as the San Fran earthquake, and you have one failed caper.

Five very dapper gents, with appropriately mixed races, plan a very big heist involving armored cars and underground mechanics. The trouble is, these notoriously meticulous thieves are pressed to pull off the job in five days. Not good for careful planners.

Of the things that go wrong, the only one I buy is the late arrival of a target because I've been in Los Angeles traffic, and not even a moving bank could make that congestion go away. Regardless, Detective Jack Welles (Matt Dillon) will sacrifice even his relationship with his daughter to track down these miscreants.

Knowing the thespian-challenged Hayden Christensen is a star of Takers, and you dislike nervous MTV camera work, then you have an idea what a crime the film really is. However Dillon is a treat to watch—-he has this world-weary cop down pat.

Takers is not Stanley Kubrick's The Killing (1956), where another five men plot a heist. The only taking here is your ticket money.

Far From The Madding Crowd Movie Review
Far from the Madding Crowd is a 1967 film directed by John Schlesinger, adapted from the book of Thomas Hardy. It was Schlesinger’s fourth film and marked a stylistic shift away from his earlier works which explored contemporary urban mores. The cinematography was by Nicolas Roeg and the soundtrack was by Richard Rodney Bennett. Original folk songs were also used in various scenes throughout the film.
It was nominated for one Oscar for best Original music score and two BAFTA’s, Best British Cinematography (Colour) and Best British Costume (Colour).

For many the casting of sixties beauty Julie Christie as the vulnerable heartbreaker Bathsheba Everdene was erroneous, but Christie does a fine job, and makes the role her own. Schlesinger remains faithful to the romantic spirit of Hardy, drenching the magnificent cinematography in the exquisite pastoral music of Richard Rodney Bennett, who clearly wrote under the influence of Vaughan Williams and Delius, while interpreting the story for the cinema very much in his own way. The film is long; but craftmanlike, and characterised by superb performances, withPeter Finch as the tormented Boldwood, and Alan Bates as Gabriel, who is the moral force within the story, particularly excellent. The film’s climax is one of the most hauntingly poignant in sixties cinema.

Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging

Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging Review
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is a 2008 British comedy film co-written and directed by Gurinder Chadha. Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is based on two popular teenage novels by Louise Rennison: Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging and It’s OK, I’m Wearing Really Big Knickers or, as it was sold as in the U.S., On the Bright Side, I’m Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God.

Georgia Nicolson (Groome) finds her perception of life changes after making a fool of herself at a party. Now she plans to grow up and no sooner does Robbie (Johnson) come to her school, andGeorgia instantly falls for him.

After the disappointing adaptation of St Trinians and the decline of British cinema generally over recent years this adaptation appeared to be screened as a mere money making hour and a half entertainment rom-com flick. But thanks to some cheeky youthful performances, a witty script and an underlining message of coming of age, this adaptation of Louise Rennison’s best selling novel brings back that feeling of unashamedly British.

In her first leading role Georgia Groome (London to Brighton) carries the film on a charismatic and charming persona that will have the teenage girls laughing their heads off. Her smart timing and in particular her reactions to situations create that comedy feeling that was an essential factor to making the narrative work.

The film undoubtedly starts poorly. When Georgia turns up at a party, it is more than likely she will be an outcast and the fact that she gets embarrassed in front of her enemy and has to change her life is even more so. Nevertheless the comedic approach to thecoming of age is likable and hardly clichéd. There is some background to her motion to change and the way she looks at adulthood as a place of comfort is as likable as her cat. The changes she goes through are sweet and realistic given today’s modern outlook on the world. In this adaptation, we see many stereotypes and a very accurate look at teen language. The ‘oh my god’s’ will have anyone laughing. The perception of girl’s views on boys is a stand out moment.

The stereotypical representations are usually never right. Either they are extremely over exaggerated, for example in controversial drama Kidulthood or they are unnoticeable passive representations such as in St Trinians. The angle on the characters in this 2008 comedy feels right, not over the top with a good sense of purpose and an underlining message ofcoming of age.

Though good fun, the plot wavers into cliché at the end and doesn’t quite have enough punch to believe the arrival of British comedy is truly back.

The Expendables Movie Review

The Expendables Movie, actually a sloppy affair with innumerable explosions, unfortunately all mounting to all smoke and no fire.
After all the film is directed by action super star Sylvester Stallone and is probably the only film which has the biggest of action heroes all in one film! And no prizes to guess what happens when you have a battalion of action superstars sharing the screen space. The film is expected to set the screen on fire and The Expendables literally does though there is no heat to that fire.
Stallone delivers what his loyal fans would ideally expect from him and his ‘action’ film – loads of gunfire, explosions and killings. However, lack of an original plot makes it all look futile.
Many would say an action film works as long as the stunts are entertaining so why even consider the plot? But, Stallone’s ambitious project doesn’t even delve into offering imaginative fight sequences. What you see onscreen is something you must have already seen for like a billion times before thus making his film look dated. It might have clicked with the audiences had it been released in the 80’s.
The Expendables sees Stallone flex his iconic muscles yet again and this time not alone. The superstar ropes in action heavy- weightsJet Li, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke (to name a few) in an attempt to treat his fans with an overdose of unadulterated action which he does deliver although in a highly clichéd & formulaic way.
Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) heads a team of good mercenaries comprising of Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Tool (Mickey Rourke), Bao Thao (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) and Toll Road (Randy Couture). They call themselves ‘The Expendables’.
FBI approaches the gang to undertake the mission of overthrowing the cruel regime of Saddam Hussain-esque South American dictator Gen. Garza. How they go about doing it forms the story.
As mentioned earlier, in spite of having a stellar cast, ‘The Expendables’ fails to hold your interest, thanks to its sheer conventionalism. The film has nothing new to offer. The story is highly predictable as Stallone strictly sticks to the 80’s formulas on how to make a ‘good action film’.
For instance, to project how ‘heroic’ his fellow mercenaries are, he makes Jason Statham punch the man to death who physically abuses his ex-girlfriend, in a scene which seems simply irrelevant and unnecessary in the film’s story. There are many such scenes and many more irrelevant characters which come out of no where thus simply stretching the film for no rhyme or reason.
The attraction Barney has for Gen. Garza’s feisty daughter Sandra seems totally out of place.
Most of the actors are wasted and the ones who do get prominence get nothing new to do. Mickey Rourke plays a tattoo artist who appears for few minutes, WWE star Stone Cold aka Steve Austin gets the least number of dialogues. Gen Garza is a character that needs to be frightful but David Zayas as the General leaves no impact, nor does bad CIA agent Monroe played by Eric Roberts.
The art direction is so poor that the country Gen Garza rules looks like a studio set and so does the Gen’s palatial house. The accents of the South American people sound put on and no detailing goes into achieving any sort of authenticity to the overall look and feel ofthe film.
The only positive thing about The Expendables is the banter that the groupies exchange with each other once in a while. Best of the lot being the conversation between arch rivals in their heydays Arnold Schwarzenegger andSylvester Stallone . Sylvester even taunts Arnold (in guest appearance) on how he is more interested in being ‘the president’. This scene entertains more than the entire film put together.
The script too has various loopholes. It makes the opposition party, (the bad guys) look like a bunch of jokers with absolutely no powers. When The Expendables conquer the Gen, their task seems like a cakewalk.

This has certainly been one of the best comedies of the summer, seeing as other movies like Dinner for Schmucks did not really live up to its potential.

You've got Mark Wahlberg, your typical tough guy; Will Ferrell, your awkward funny dude; Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson playing--what else--a couple of badasses who I was surprised to see got very little screen time. And I still have a huge "What the heck just happened?!" stamped on my forehead after what happened to them.

No one really "stole" this movie; meaning, there wasn't really a standout performance from anyone. Everyone was just... funny. There was a couple of interesting humor like the silent fight during the funeral and one of the cops "tweeting" and Michael Keaton quoting TLC songs, as well as some other memorable scenes.

This movie has enough action to satisfy the plot and very few (if any) twists. It was simple and to the point, which I haven't decided yet if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

But now, every time I see a red Prius, I'm gonna wanna look inside to see if there's a group of homosexual hobos having an orgy.

I was expecting a poor movie but my friend and I both thoroughly enjoyed the film. The storyline of the misunderstood kid has been done before and this as it is designed does tug at my heartstrings. Joey King is a natural and plays her role very well easily gaining my sympathy.I liked the role Sierra McCormic played. When I watch this kind of film I don't feel comfortable with an overly aggressive villain. The relationship between Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Spevack was feel good but for an adult viewer it may make the movie a tad too feel good. Into every life a little rain must fall. All in all the cast did a good job pulling together a familiar plot. The special effects worked well. It was easy to relate to the drawn out magic that a child feels when having fun. Lauri Craig's direction showed no flaws, the movie flowed smoothly. I would have liked a bit more time devoted to the commercial contest to see how it fit into the story.

Despicable Me

2010-07-26T07:16:00.000-07:00

What a year it has been for animated films. So far in 2010 we have had three great films from three rival studios. DreamWorks kicked things off with the surprise sleeper hit How to Train Your Dragon and animation juggernaut Pixar countered with the hotly anticipated Toy Story 3. Now Universal's Illumination Entertainment has released the audaciously titled Despicable Me and while it may be the "worst" of the trio, it is certainly the most purely entertaining.

The strengths of Despicable Me lie within veins commonly found in animated features, but his entry simply utilizes them extremely effectively. Along with jumping on the 3-D bandwagon (my theatre was screening it in normal dimensions) Despicable Me boasts an impressive voice cast, a ploy first used with Robin Williams way back in the days of traditional days of animation with Aladdin, superbly executed slapstick and what I will call the sidekick factor. Whether cute or wisecracking, you would be hard-pressed to find a film in this medium that does not employ this tactic. Even so called "art-house" animated pictures like WALL-E follow the trend (in fact, that particular film contains two such supporting characters) and Despicable Me ups the ante and adopts thousands.

The villainous central character of Gru (voiced my Steve Carell) operates his evil lair with the aid of a multitude of adorable little yellow workers, and along with their "awwwee" factor, are the subject of a healthy portion of the aforementioned slapstick. Nestled in between the easy laughs however is ample heart and if you are prone to do so, you may very well shed a tear or two. This warmth is generated by three orphan girls, Margo, Edith and the doe-eyed Agnes, but perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself.

All Gru has ever wanted is to be accepted, and what better way to achieve that goal than by resorting to supervillainy. After a fresh- faced rival villain Vector (Jason Segel) outdoes Gru by stealing a pyramid from Egypt, he devises a plan to obtain a shrink-ray from a government testing facility and use that technology to shrink, and then steal the moon. Things do not go according to plan after Vector steals the shrink-ray right out of Gru's spindly clutches. What's a supervillain to do? Devise another plan of course, this time using the three aforementioned orphans to infiltrate Vector's lair by selling cookies. It's all very complicated in writing but works very well on screen.

Steve Carell does an admirable job in the lead voice role, and his Russian accent helps us to forget it is an A-list star nestled behind the animation. Russell Brand gives an unrecognizable performance as Dr. Nefario, the brains behind Gru's operation, and Kristen Wiig is hilarious as the head of the orphanage. The most disappointing is certainly the great Jason Segel whose underwritten character fails him as does his voice. Half of the allure of Segel is his physical presence and that is neutered in a voice-only role. While the physical humour will no doubt please the kids, there is perhaps even more for adults and if a movie is able to make me double over in the isle, then it must be doing something right. With Shrek Forever After being the one misstep for this medium, I look enthusiastically forward to the remainder of the year. What I know for certain is I (and the audience I joined) had an absolute blast with this flick, that is despicable in name only.

Salt

2010-07-26T06:51:00.000-07:00

One almost gets to feeling spoiled, as after Inception we have 2 weeks in a row of good movies opening. I am as grateful and shocked as you are, but still feeling the rope burns from Jonah’s Airbending Eclipse to think this anything but a hiccup of goodness amidst the mediocrity
. I’m not sure what it means that The Expendables is the only thing left during the hot pocket months that genuinely generates fissions of excitement, even if it is just to see old 80’s stars groan, creak, and Ben Gay their way through exploding jeeps.
At least we have Salt to remind us what a fun summer flick should be for about 100 minutes. It’s an above average action movie that succeeds where last month’s A-Team worked only intermittently and a lot less ridiculous than Jolie’s last action attempt Wanted.

Inception

2010-07-26T06:27:00.000-07:00

Films about dreams and the subconscious are usually not very straightforward and almost always weird. "Inception" is no exception to that rule, but like its cinematic predecessors who have explored the contrast between and the questions of what is real and what is illusion (i.e. "The Matrix" (1999), "The Cell" (2000), "Abre Los Ojos" (1997) & its American remake "Vanilla Sky" (2001)), you really can't look away, nor should you.

"Inception" is an excellent and breathtaking movie that may be one of the only films released so far during the Summer of 2010 that lives up to its hype. It is a nearly perfect and highly original film that holds your attention until the credits roll. The less you know about this movie going in, the more you will be entranced by seeing it.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays Dom Cobb, a world class criminal who, with the help of a team of sleep experts, works his way into people's subconscious and steals what people value most: ideas directly from their minds. In his last assignment to possibly clear his name, he is assigned not to steal an idea from someone, but to plant one inside that person's mind. The difficulty comes when certain people are trained to block their ideas from being taken.

That plot summary only covers the basics of this pretty complicated story, but to describe every plot detail would take away the magic of this film you must see yourself to believe. DiCaprio is good in his role, but unlike many other films he has starred in, this is perhaps his only role where his character alone does not carry the weight of the movie on his shoulders or share it equally with one other co-star. Instead, this great ensemble cast teams together to make this movie work, just as their characters collaborate to pull off such a unique heist. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, and Tom Hardy are especially good in their roles.

The special effects in this film were also very good, which is amazing considering their simplicity compared to the "Matrix" movies. There are slow-motion shots, but no impossible kung fu fighting sequences. It's especially interesting when the film gets into the architecture of certain dreams, and impossible sequences are filmed in a way I've never seen other than in drawings.

However, the special effects would mean nothing if the story wasn't good. For this reason, even something as simple as a spinning top holds your attention in a way you would never think it would when seeing it in this film. The credit here can be given to writer and director Christopher Nolan, who has not made a bad film yet. There are many twists and turns in this film, but Nolan never loses his focus in the process of telling the story. If Nolan does not get nominated for Best Director and/or Best Original Screenplay next Oscar season, there is something terribly wrong with the Academy.

That being said, there was still a lot about this film I still don't get, and may require multiple viewings to better understand. However, some of the best films I've seen are confusing at first. "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) is a film I've seen a couple of times, and still don't understand completely. It still has a major following, though, as I'm positive this movie will. It's an incredibly entertaining movie, but it also makes you think and continues to do so after you leave the theater.

First Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Devil

First Trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Devil

Watch the first trailer for Devil, the new film from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan but directed by Drew and John Erick Dowdle.
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender may very well be the worst movie of his career, but that doesn’t mean the guy can’t still come up with an interesting original story.
Take Universal’s Devil for example. The film, which is based on a Shyamalan story, revolves around a group of five individuals who are trapped in a skyscraper elevator. The twist? One of them is the Devil. If you think that sounds interesting, just wait until you see the first trailer. Offering a mix of psychological and supernatural horror, the Devil trailer hints at a movie that is suspenseful – and will keep audiences guessing.
Of course, no matter how good the movie looks, some people may not give it a chance – simply because they have been disappointed by Shyamalan’s more-recent films. Luckily for those people, Shyamalan isn’t directing.
Check out the first trailer for Devil produced by M. Night Shyamalan:
Devil is the first of three horror movies Shyamalan is producing as part of his The Night Chronicles series. The essential development process of The Night Chronicles goes something like this: Shyamalan comes up with an idea and then passes it off to a young emerging filmmaker.
This round, the job of actually directing Devil, falls to the hands of the brother team of Drew and John Erick Dowdle. The Dowdle brothers have already proven their horror movie chops (somewhat) as the writers of Quarantine (John Erick also directed the film). While that movie was essentially a shot for shot remake of Rec, the superior Spanish-language original, it still demonstrated the pair’s ability to create a consistently frightening and atmospheric horror-thriller.
Hopefully, they will deliver the same quality work on Devil and live up to the early promise shown in this trailer. If not, well, I guess we’ll just have to wait for Shyamalan’s redemption in The Last Airbender 2. Just kidding!
Devil opens on September 17th 2010

Cyrus

2010-07-14T07:01:00.001-07:00

With John's social life at a standstill and his ex-wife about to get remarried, a down on his luck divorcee finally meets the woman of his dreams, only to discover she has another man in her life -- her son. Written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass, the iconoclastic filmmaking team behind Sundance Film Festival favorite 'The Puffy Chair,' 'Cyrus' takes an insightful and funny look at love and family in contemporary Los Angeles.

Still single seven years after the breakup of his marriage, John (John C. Reilly) has all but given up on romance. But at the urging of his ex-wife and best friend Jamie (Catherine Keener), John grudgingly agrees to join her and her fiance Tim (Matt Walsh) at a party. To his and everyone else's surprise, he actually manages to meet someone: the gorgeous and spirited Molly (Marisa Tomei).

Their chemistry is immediate. The relationship takes off quickly but Molly is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond John's house. Perplexed, he follows her home and discovers the other man in Molly's life: her son, Cyrus (Jonah Hill). A 21-year-old new age musician, Cyrus is his mom's best friend and shares an unconventional relationship with her. Cyrus will go to any lengths to protect Molly and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone, especially John. Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love--and it appears only one man can be left standing when it's over.

SHREK forever after

Shrek is feeling over-domesticated in the fourth installment. He has lost his roar. It used to send villagers running away in terror. Now they run to him and ask him to sign their pitchforks and torches. To regain his ogre mojo, he strikes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin. The pact goes awry and Shrek must confront what life would be like in Far Far Away if he had never existed. That translates into Donkey being forced into cart-pulling duty, fat and lazy Puss in Boots trading his sword for a pink bow and the underhanded Rumpelstiltskin ruling the kingdom.
