Editor’s Review

Echo Bistro and Wine Bar is a locally owned, chef operated, slice of dining heaven. My wife and I have a thing for well cooked, properly prepared food that you just can’t get from big chain restaurants where it is all about turn and burn to get guests in and out.

Echo takes intimate dining in Knoxville to where it should be. The menu provides the opportunity to enjoy selections like Bison Steak or Sea Scallops “St. Jaque.” Having eaten there three times now since first discovering it we have never been let down. The service has always been professional and courteous. Only once did I ever feel like we had been left for too long but the food and ambiance more than made up for it.

While I have listed the attire as “dress” it is probably closer to business casual / dressy. You don’t need a tie but you probably don’t want to walk in to eat in your shorts and t-shirt either. As far as cost, it is really up to what you order, you can make it as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. The appetizers are reasonably priced, and the entrees range from $19.95 – $26.00. It may not be an everyday eats for most people but if you want to impress your significant other and enjoy some great food this is definitely the place to go.

I know this is called Review Knoxville but I found myself in the Maryville area today for a trip to the Pumpkin Patch and we stopped to eat at Cheddar’s on the way back home. The restaurant itself was pretty nice on the inside. We showed up around 4:00 and it was pretty busy already. We had a group of 8 and had to wait about 30 minutes to get a table. They have a nice big fish tank that the kids liked to check out. The decor is what I would call casual sophisticated. It wasn’t so casual that you thought you were at some cheap joint but not so fancy that you felt under dressed.

Service

The service was the one area where they really dropped the ball. We were sat and didn’t get a lick of service for a good 10 plus minutes. When our waitress finally decided to take the time to drop by our table she didn’t apologize for the wait and she obviously didn’t want to wait on us. Once things got going they did get a little bit better but it was a horrible first impression for your first time in a restaurant. We ordered appetizers which were delivered by someone other than our waitress. She started dishing out the dishes and handed me a stack of app plates where the top one had some kind of dirt or dust all over it. I handed back and asked if she could please bring me another plate, she responded “that is just the stuff off the bottom of the… never mind I will bring you another”. I don’t know about you but I don’t care where it came from it shouldn’t be on my plate.

The Food

The food was good, we got the queso dip and chips as an appetizer. Unfortunately the chips weren’t fried right so a good number of them were soggy and not crispy. We also had some cheesy fries which were pretty good. Not Outback good, but good all the same. I had the Key West Chicken and Shrimp, it was pretty good. I would certainly order it again and the chicken was thankfully cooked correctly and not dry at all. No one at the table had any problems with the food they got.

Overall

Overall I think there was a definite reason it was the busy place in the area. The food was good, the service lacked but it may not be indicative of the overall service at the restaurant. The biggest thing that would keep people coming back here though would be the value. There was very little on the menu that cost more than $10. My family of four ate for $25 and that includes an appetizer.
