Todd Borg's 'Tahoe Dark' serves up murder and mystery in Lake Tahoe area

Private investigator Owen McKenna is up to his eyebrows in trouble in Todd Borg's latest novel, Tahoe Dark. The police have discovered a dead body and the evidence points to McKenna as the killer. Borg writes thrilling mysteries with elegantly woven plots. In exchange for the reader's attention, he delivers tight action in a beautiful setting. Borg's robust cast of characters includes McKenna's girlfriend, entomologist Casey Street; his Great Dane, Spot and a number of local law enforcement officers in jurisdictions all around Lake Tahoe, both California and Nevada.

Evil seems even more vile against the majestic backdrop of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Borg does an excellent job of using the geography in his stories, making each one a mini-vacation to the area. Just keep your head down while you’re there.

As I’ve read more and more of his books over the years (Tahoe Dark marks detective McKenna’s fourteenth book), my admiration for Borg’s storytelling increases. His characters grow with each volume. Relationships wax and wane, with realistic issues impacting the day-to-day, in addition to the adventure inherent in the case. His situations provide interesting and unusual crimes and motives.

If you love a great mystery with unexpected turns, you’ll adore Tahoe Dark. Relationship and buddy story fans will find a lot to embrace here as well. As for dog stories, well, you don’t stand much chance of encountering more delightful dogs in fiction than Spot.

I’ve likened Borg’s work to James D. MacDonald and Robert B. Parker as contemporary brethren. Owen McKenna can hold his own with Travis McGee and Spenser. Others go back even further, with comparisons to …”Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe and Lew Archer” (Kirkus Reviews). In my opinion, Borg’s series will become just as much of a classic as all of those.

Yes, I am an unabashed fan of Borg’s work. Any mystery lover will risk instant addiction with the first one opened. I’m not alone in my admiration. Borg has been named the Toastmaster for the 2018 Left Coast Crime Conference.

The novella will appeal to mystery lovers as well as animal lovers. Readers who prefer romances will find a sophisticated romance here, reminiscent of the clever conversation and dramatic situations in movies from Hollywood’s Golden Era. One needn’t be an art expert to appreciate the story line, although art will appreciate the respectful approach taken to art.

As a murder mystery, the story contains some violence; the action is neither gratuitous nor gross. Although the protagonists experience periods of sensual interaction, they don’t act upon their feelings so readers aren’t bombarded with sexual content. Some mild cursing occurs within the book, but Ewald’s writing conveys emotion without resorting to coarse vulgarity. The book can carry a general audience rating, suitable for readers from teen years on up.

Indie Author Day at Public Libraries brings writers and readers together

On October 8, a number of libraries hosted a premiere event to connect independent authors, librarians and the reading public together in an exchange of ideas and connections to benefit all.

Although some locations on the southeast coast had to be rescheduled due to Hurricane Matthew, hundreds of libraries across the United States and Canada opened their doors to local indie authors.

Materials distributed during the event included information on the library, the sponsoring groups and area activities.

Sponsored by such related entities as Self-E (a partnership of LibraryJournal.com and Biblioboard), the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), BookLife and Pressbooks Public, the national event concluded with a live streaming panel discussion (view the playback here) about the industry and its relationship to libraries and bookstores.

Panel members represented many sides of the writing world and included:

Jim Blanton – Representative from LibraryJournal

The discussion grew out of questions submitted in advance by librarians, authors and others in the writing community.

Five Fantastic Journeys, by Nicholas Litchfield

As a kid, during the summers I’d take long hikes in the woods near my parent’s home. There were no designated trails back then, and after following well-trodden ground for several miles, the makeshift path would suddenly end, inviting you to work your way through brambles and over mud banks in search of a clearing or some telltale sign you were headed in the direction of an outlet from the woods rather than further into wilderness. More often than not, I’d find myself completely lost and needing to retrace my steps, before attempting to forge a different path through the trees and scrubs.

Sometimes, after a fretful spell of vigorous trekking, I’d emerge onto the fairway of the golf course in the next town over. Other times, I’d find myself in another village, ten or more miles from home.

Half the time, the rambles were more frustrating than exciting, but there was something about them that made them addictive. I like to think that a driving urge for exploration was behind those daily forays into the dense unknown. Maybe, though, it was just that my head was full of classic 19th-century adventure novels from the likes of Robert Louis Stephenson or H. Rider Haggard, and I was desperate for an adventure of my own.

Today, those same abundant woods are heavily depleted, and numerous short trails have been marked out and areas fenced off. But the books that filled my head with a lust for travel and adventure are still in print. In fact, I’ve since discovered a huge number of later, swashbuckling novels—the sort that would inspire any schoolboy worth his salt to lay down his class project, on a warm weekend, and head off into the darkest, most impenetrable thicket he can find, determined to tread where no other has gone before and, before nightfall (probably sporting blackened, calloused hands and bloodied knees), emerge triumphant.

The books I’ve chosen here veer toward the wild and dramatic and the darkly comic—from unorthodox Westerns set in mid-1800s and early 1900s, the 1930s and 40s styled pulp fiction adventure yarn, and the 1960s spy thriller, to the modern-day black comic masterpiece.

1) The Spy In The Jungle, by Bill S. Ballinger (1965)

I own at least seven books by Bill S. Ballinger, although it's taken me years to finally pull one off the shelf and give it more than a cursory glance. I’m glad I waited until I had time to read one leisurely. The Spy In The Jungle is the second in Ballinger’s exciting '60s espionage series featuring super-spy Joaquin Hawks, a fearless, multilingual, martial arts trained CIA agent of Spanish and Indian heritage. Hawks’ greatest talent is his aptitude for going deep undercover, establishing thorough fake identities for himself in various parts of Asia and attracting a useful network of allies. There’s much to enjoy in this Hawks adventure. Ballinger is a very descriptive writer with a talent for depicting people and places, which he puts to good use as he sends Hawks on a wide-ranging journey to places like Saigon, Hanoi, and Laos. His mission is to investigate stolen missiles in a top-secret nuclear project, and the best parts of his adventure are, indeed, when he's in the jungle, either hanging out with remote tribes (entertaining them with music and trading wise comments with the elders) or trying to get inside a heavily guarded ancient temple. Over all, this is a very likeable, classic adventure novel, typical of its time, though penned by an adept, erudite writer experienced at genre fiction.

2) Hunt At the Well of Eternity, by James Reasoner (2009)

This exceedingly entertaining six-book series, published between 2009 and 2010, was originally credited to Gabriel Hunt (with the genuine author named on the title page, under the byline “as told to”). Acclaimed mystery writer and publisher Charles Ardai developed the Indiana Jones inspired series and penned the second Hunt adventure. Being that the books in the series are by different authors, the writing style varies greatly from one novel to the next—Raymond Benson, author of the final book (Hunt at Napoleon’s Web) makes a smart move by referencing other Hunt adventures and attempting to further develop the relationship between the Hunt siblings. However, nothing can eclipse the masterful first Gabriel Hunt adventure, which is more than just a throwback to classic pulp fiction fare from the 30s and 40s. Here, high-caliber author James Reasoner offers up a master class in action/adventure writing. Paying close attention to plot development, he manages to string together a succession of exciting vehicle chases, dramatic gun battles, and even a vicious bullwhip contest, as goodies and baddies attempt to locate the fabled Fountain of Youth.

Of all the exciting moments in this novel—and I guarantee there’s more heart-pounding action here than in any other novel you may have read—none are more exhilarating than when Gabriel and his small company, during their exhausting trek through the Guatemalan jungle, set foot on a sagging four-foot-wide bridge made of ropes and planks, in their attempt to cross a chasm fifty yards wide and hundreds of feet deep, known as “The Blade of the Gods.” The rickety bridge Reasoner describes sounds daunting enough, and their journey across it will make your knees go weak. Of course, Reasoner doesn’t let the drama ease up for a second. Just when they are all halfway across, he presents a new unexpected twist, and all hell breaks loose…

Few writers can match Reasoner when it comes to action and adventure. My only complaint is that there aren’t more Hunt adventures in the works—principally, those penned by Reasoner himself.

3) The 100-year-old man who climbed out the window and disappeared, by Jonas Jonasson (2012)

This exciting, continually amusing crime novel was first published in Sweden in 2009, the English translation by Rod Bradbury coming three years later. Although there are many characters in the book (key historical figures like Francisco Franco, Kim Il-sung, and Harry S. Truman make appearances—in fact, there’s a chapter featuring Joseph Stalin that can’t help but make you laugh out loud), the focus is predominantly on the likeable, vodka loving, Swedish centenarian Allan Karlsson. After he skips out on his birthday party, surreptitiously exiting his room at a nursing home by way of the window, on a whim, he flees town on a bus—in possession of a stranger’s suitcase. So begins this offbeat tale, which rapidly picks up speed as a gang of violent criminals, as well as newspaper reporters and police detectives, pursue Allen across Sweden. If the story solely revolved around the ensuing mishaps and murders and the manhunt for Allen, this would still be an extraordinary novel, but what elevates it to modern classic status are the chapters detailing Allan’s remarkable past, from his role in the Spanish Civil War, and his significant interactions with various world leaders, to his years in the gulag, and his dramatic escape from a prison in Iran. We come to learn that, all throughout his adult life, Allan’s been involved, in some way or another, in various major world events. And even at a hundred years old, still he continued to wreak havoc.

4) The Sisters Brothers, by Patrick deWitt (2011)

Set in 1851, during the Gold Rush, two brothers (Eli and Charlie Sisters), hired guns working for a vile tycoon/private investor known as the Commodore, are dispatched to San Francisco to find and kill an extraordinary chemist by the name Hermann Kermit Warm. During their lengthy journey on horseback from Oregon to California, author Patrick deWitt introduces the reader to an impressive variety of remarkably quirky characters, from a crazed, weeping dentist to a vile young girl who takes pleasure in poisoning a three-legged dog. As one might expect, the pair's journey is fraught with mishap and danger, not least because the hotheaded younger brother, Charlie, is reckless and prone to alcoholic binges and bloodlust. Also, being that he’s a cold-blooded killer, he’s about as trustworthy as his boss—both Charlie and the Commodore are cheating Eli out of money. Gradually, Eli becomes aware of this fact. Actually, he becomes aware of a lot of things during the course of his travels and, in part through his interactions with others, undergoes a transformation, softening from the vicious killer we see at the beginning of the novel and, toward the end, becoming a more compassionate person, unable to complete his assignment and desperately striving for a different way of life.

Easily one the best novels I've read (I’m not in the minority here, either—the book was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize), The Sisters Brothers is very different from anything else that’s branded a “Western.” At times, graphic and unpleasant (the image of a horse burning to death comes to mind), with some startling images and characters; absurdly comic at other times. The deadpan dialogue is consistent throughout, though, and mixed in with the humor and excitement, there’s a lot of thoughtful, intelligent reflections. Incidentally, Patrick deWitt has written two other fine novels (Ablutions and Undermajordomo Minor), both markedly different from this one, but also well worth reading.

5) The Thicket, by Joe R. Lansdale (2013)

This is a fantastic coming-of-age black comedy set in Texas in the early 20th-century. The first pages are so packed with drama, it’s difficult not to become invested in the story and feel deep sympathy for the luckless central character, 16-year-old Jack Parker, whose parents have recently died from smallpox. When his grandfather takes him, along with Jack’s 14-year-old sister, Lula, to live with their aunt on the other side of the Sabine River, outlaws attack them—grandpa is murdered, Lula abducted, and Jack narrowly escapes death. Later, when he reaches town, he discovers that the outlaws, who, earlier, robbed a bank, have also killed the sheriff, and so Jack’s forced to take matters into his own hands and mount a rescue mission of his own. He enlists the services of some peculiar strangers—a half black, half Comanche gravedigger/tracker with a 600-pound pet hog, and Shorty, a bounty-hunter midget who is part philosopher, part astronomer. As characters go, Shorty—an ex-army scout who was taught to shoot by Annie Oakley—is one of the most fascinating of all, and you could listen to his philosophizing all day.

Other unusual characters join Jack’s troupe, and their entertaining, meandering journey to a large, wild forest called Big Thicket, home to outlaws and rednecks, is exciting and amusing, daft in places, poignant at times, and full of unexpected encounters and thought-provoking, highly enjoyable dialogue. (Sadly, as with the deep, dark woods I used to get hopelessly lost in as a younger, we discover miles of Big Thicket have been cleared, robbing it of its daunting quality.)

I’ve read a number of books by author Joe R. Lansdale, but this is by far my favorite. And if you’ve already read this and enjoyed it, then I’d recommend a somewhat similar though much earlier novel, The Magic Wagon (1986).

Author and speaker Melinda Taliancich Falgoust bears a strong resemblance to a steam roller, although a delightful one. She speaks, teaches, encourages, acts, operates puppets and generally performs at high speed as she careens through life. One of the stops on her path will be the 8^th Annual Picayune Writers Group Free Symposium on Saturday, September 24.

Falgoust, author of award-winning children’s literature, brings energy and information into her presentations. She has appeared across the country at library events, book store events, writing events and educator events. Wherever she goes, she brings interactive learning to the group.

She has spoken at past PWG Symposium’s and been a crowd favorite with her techniques of drawing the entire audience into her presentation. Both children and adults respond to her fast-paced demonstrations and experiments.

Some of her presentations include puppets, while others include props such as treasure chests and pirate costumes. She utilizes her acting background as well as her writing skills to enliven her subjects and share her wisdom. When Falgoust arrives, the fun begins.

Murdered by Country Music by Dianne Harman

When a group of friends agree to help staff a food truck for a country music festival, they have no idea they will be next door to murder. The Red Pony food truck offers a delicious menu of food, but will the entrée be overshadowed by deadly events? Dianne Harman brings her High Desert Cozy Mystery crew back for a third adventure, this one filled with food, art, music and nefarious dealings.

Psychic Laura James owns the compound where the six friends hatch their plans for the festival. Her artist-boyfriend Les Anderson has joined the festivities. Laura’s sister Marty Morgan is engaged to Detective Jeff Combs of the Palm Springs Police Department. Marty’s background in art and antiques appraisal ties in nicely with Laura’s work for an insurance company. John Anderson, owner of The Red Pony food truck, is always trying out his new recipes on the little group. He and his assistant Max Samuel brought samples of the planned menu for the upcoming music festival to reward the volunteers.

While the six seem well suited to work together for the few days of the High Desert Country Music Festival, a problem soon develops: Jacque Ruchon, John’s main rival will be part of the Festival, too. All of the ingredients are present for cooking up a recipe of trouble.

Harman’s core characters are adults, well-established along career tracks. Watching them deal with the youth factor at a music festival brings a light element to the story, while Marty’s involvement with an art appraisal for the owner of the ranch housing the festival lends a warm family touch. Woven throughout the story are the intrigues of a competitive business and people with addiction issues.

As befits a cozy mystery, the violence takes place off-page, the language is mild and sexual innuendo is kept to a minimum. Harman’s deft handling of the multitude of work roles involved makes for an enjoyable jaunt into a dangerous world. Are you brave enough to visit the High Desert world she describes?

This book will appeal to readers who like mysteries without grim bloody descriptions. The art aspects of Marty’s appraisal work will delight art enthusiasts. The volume includes recipes for many of the dishes served in the story, making it a treat for cooks.

Norse mythology to take your breath away - T L Greylock's epic saga begins

In a stunning display of writing prowess, author T L Greylock brings an epic tales of Norse heroes into modern language. The Blood-Tainted Winter, subtitled The Song of the Ash Tree - First Edda, offers a sweeping story told from the perspective of Raef Skallagrim, a young man who wants nothing more than to take a ship and make his fortune at sea. Raef’s father Einarr, the lord of Vannheim, has other plans for his son and heir.

When the death of the king leaves a leadership void to be filled, the young lord finds himself in desperate circumstances. Surrounded by those who call themselves friends, he must make difficult choices. Can he trust those at his side? Will he and his warriors ever see Vannheim again?

Peopled with colorful characters with names like Thorgrim Great-Belly and Findar Urdson, the Far-Traveled, the story charges its way across Midgard at a gallop. Each character plays an important part in the story and displays many layers of personality. There are no throwaway characters in the book.

Greylock’s imagery sweeps across the page, drawing the reader into a world of warriors and shieldmaidens, where an insult can lead to a death fight and not all enemies are human. She presents the mythological elements in such a way that the roles played by each figure show clearly, even to readers who have forgotten what they learned of Beowulf in school, but without lecture.

The powerful story uses Norse mythology but goes beyond, into a human story of hopes and dreams, relationships and revenge as the battle to fill the throne sprawls across the land. Faith and betrayal, friends and enemies spill forth to captivate the reader. Fans of the mythology will find plenty to enjoy, while fans of excellent character study will rejoice as well.

Greylock has thoughtfully included two reference tools: a map of Midgard at the front of the book and a list of important characters and their titles at the back. The tools, however, are not the main attraction of the book. The story steals the show, with the characterizations in hot pursuit. Greylock clearly loves the period and approaches the book with affection and depth.

Be forewarned, though. This is the first volume and the story does not end here. Fall in love with Greylock’s work and get ready to wait for the next installment.

Editor, ghost writer Laura Anne Ewald helps writers release better books

The writing process begins with the writer but will include others as the work progresses. Choosing the appropriate editor can mean the difference between a ho-hum volume and a successful book.

Editor and ghost writer Laura Anne Ewald knows how important the editor’s role becomes in the birth of a book. She is a published author herself. When a writer entrusts a manuscript to the former academic librarian, the resulting book or story delivers a more polished version, but true to the author’s vision.

In 2011, Ewald left academia to pursue a full-time freelance career. She began with book indexing, the process of creating those handy indices at the back of books to help readers locate references within the volume. From there, she moved into abstracting, including work as a subcontractor to a big publishing house. By 2013, she was referred to Elance*, an online employment service, as a place to find more indexing jobs.

“I didn’t find indexing jobs but I did find editing jobs,” she says. Her subject matter has included short stories, children’s stories, science fiction novels and personal memoirs. She finds her clients all over the country and in her own neighborhood.

“Fiction, I think, I like best,” she responds when asked about her favorite genre to edit. “Nonfiction is easier, in the sense that you’re just looking at grammar and syntax.” But Ewald enjoys working in other people’s characters and universes, a joy which shows as she discusses assignments. Fiction poses the extra challenge of staying in the authors voice, one of Ewald’s strengths. Another strong point is her ability to follow the thread of the stories through the volume and recognize bumps or weak spots which need work.

“I know a lot of authors are afraid of using editors,” she notes, fearing their work will be “swallowed up” or changed beyond recognition by the editor. Ewald’s strength in preserving the author’s voice provides her a special place in the editing world.

While editing involves polishing another author’s work, ghostwriting means writing from scratch as someone else. As a ghostwriter, Ewald receives assignments of particular subject matter, time frames and length. Some jobs include detailed instructions as to the theme of the finished piece while others are more general. An aspect of her ghost writing is the research required to complete the assignments.

“The reason I became a librarian in the first place is, I love research,” Ewald admits. Her ghostwriting jobs give her the direction to follow with the research and the target of the finished article or book. Her clients get a completed work for whatever use they wish.

Ewald prefers to work on short assignments, such as articles, short stories or novellas. Her work includes Old Order Amish romance stories, children’s books and historical fiction. Some of the jobs are for publication by the person who contracted the job. Others are destined for a family member or special group.

Support your local comic book shop during Free Comic Book Day 2016

The annual Free Comic Book Day, a program created to celebrate comic books and readers of comic books, is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 2016. The comic book industry offers a select group of comics to independent comic book stores at low cost so the stores can give them away for free or as a charitable fundraiser. The organization behind the event states millions of books have been given away around the world since the event began in 2002.

Besides the free comic book distribution, many stores feature in-store guests—local cartoonists who are willing to come in and meet the fans (and make future fans) of their work, gamers or cosplayers. The interaction permits a greater experience than simply purchasing comic books. Better than a big box store or convenience shop, the indie comic book store connects buyers and artists as well as others in the creative community. Other events may include games or prizes for attendees or raffles. Special activities vary by store.

The regularly issued monthly version of a comic book was first released in 1922, although individual bound books had been released as early as 1837. The modern comic book grew out of these early volumes. The industry has grown to sales in the millions of dollars, according to Comichron with 2016 sales of comics and graphic novels through the end of March estimated at more than $129 million.

Find a participating comic book store through the Free Comic Book Day locator or call your local comic book store to determine if they will participate. One of the options for Gulf Coast comic lovers is Three Alarm Comics at 15210 Lemoyne Blvd., Biloxi, MS. The store will feature comic artists such as Andy Childress of BubbaWorldComix and Kevin Hayman of Everywhen Comics, Whovians of the Gulf Coast and many additional guests.

Lena Prima describes how to make jewelry with travel theme in new book

Lena Prima creates music for a living. She writes and performs it, part of her family legacy as the daughter of the late bandleader, Louis Prima. Music isn't her only creative outlet, however. She also creates beautiful handmade jewelry as part of her Pennies from Heaven company. Now Leisure Arts has published a book written by Prima on making jewelry as part of its reference line and she joins the ranks of authors who share their craft through do-it-yourself books.

In “Wanderlust,” Prima shares instructions for making jewelry pieces inspired by her own travels. Her love of fun jewelry carries over into her designs for bracelets, necklaces, charms and earrings. The jewelry making guide offers a series of travel-inspired pieces, with a background story, materials list and step-by-step instructions for each design.

With section titles such as “Seaside Memories,” “Music Festival,” “Road Trip” and “City Girl,” the wide range of flavors becomes apparent. There are two project themes under each section, and themes can include more than one piece of jewelry. For example, the Sparkling Sand project under “Seaside Memories” provides instructions for a necklace, bracelet and earrings.

Crafters of all skill levels will enjoy the volume. Prima’s designs allow novice jewelry makers to succeed because she uses readily available findings and the only tools required are two pair of chain-nosed pliers. The finished products look great, creating an environment of success to encourage the newbie.

More experienced crafters will find inspiration which they can easily adapt to more intricate projects, as well as thrifty designs which utilize every bit of the purchased pieces in interesting ways.

Artist, author Sara Bynum brings her story of children of war to film

Film maker Saran LaJoie Bynum began life with everything stacked against her. Born of a wartime liaison between a Vietnamese mother and an African-American soldier, she was rescued from the street as an infant and taken to an orphanage. She came to the United States as part of Operation Babylift at the age of three. Once in the U.S., she began a new life with adoptive parents from New Orleans.

Although her situation improved, she still had difficulties. She encountered prejudice from many ethnic groups due to her biracial heritage. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed her home and she had to flee for a second time. Yet through everything, she maintains a positive attitude.

She has registered her information on sites dedicated to reconnecting service members and the children they conceived while on duty overseas. While she hasn’t found her birth father yet, her efforts led her to connect with the man she considered her Pretend Dad, Larry Taylor, a Vietnam veteran. He told her a great deal about what circumstances were like in those days. Taylor passed away in late 2015, but not before giving his blessing to her new project.

With her latest endeavor, she seeks to share the story of the children of war from their point of view. “Where I Stand,” a film based on a fictionalized version of Bynum’s life, begins filming in May 2016. In the script, an orphan of the war seeks her missing father and discovers he is suffering with cancer caused by the chemical warfare which took place in Viet Nam. The young woman seeks answers to his situation and runs into danger and intrigue as she investigates.

Bynum promises adventure and conspiracy in the independent film. As part of the process, she has started a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe to raise the rest of the budget. Galaxy Zento spreads the word for author Dave Wilde

For Dave Wilde, life is a journey, so he named his book line for the Japanese word for journey: zento. From his Facebook page, viewers can join him in the journey through those books. As a writer, he uses Galaxy Zento to show superheroes who are more than they appear.

His guest bio for Southern GeekFest describes him as a disability activist hero, a title which he says humbles him. Wilde is an advocate for autism education and other forms of disability, especially those which aren’t visible to a casual observer. As a high functioning autistic with a son who has the same diagnosis, he has felt the sting of discrimination.

Additionally, he has multiple sclerosis, which has left him homebound for the most part.

“It’s important to me to use everything I can to show my son what you can do if you don’t give up,” he notes. His goal is to provide a positive role model for a non-stereotypical life and to ensure that no child has to go through what he went through as a child. While he notes many changes which have occurred, he realizes there is still a long way to go.

He plans to go in several directions with the Galaxy Zento world, including board games and graphic novels. Wilde even hopes to go into computer apps eventually.

Cartoonist Andy Childress creates worlds of fun with BubbaWorld Comix

“Justice League. Aquaman speaking,” were the words coming through the telephone headset as Mississippi cartoonist Andy Childress of BubbaWorld Comix answered his phone for this interview, setting the offbeat tone for the conversation. Scheduled to appear at Southern GeekFest in Hattiesburg MS April 2-3, Childress brings a whimsical approach to the world.

He says he has been a cartoonist all of his life “whether I knew it or not.”

“I started drawing when I was one. I got interested in the Sunday funnies when I was three. When I was six, I realized ‘there’s words that go with this.’” He had a lot of fun imitating his favorite comic strips and comic books. Somewhere in the ninth grade, he says he “accidentally” created his first character in art class.

“…I couldn’t think of anything to do for Easter, so I drew the Easter bunny.” His teacher told him it looked like a chicken in a floppy eared hat. “Don’t tell him. He thinks he’s the Easter bunny,” Childress replied and Herman the psychotic chicken was born. Herman turns thirty-two this year, an enduring tribute to young imagination.

Childress has created a comic line about Redneck Time Lords, which pokes loving fun at the Dr. Who mystique. Other series titles include “Mississippi Swamp Dragons” and “Going Batty.” His cartoons show up on his website, BubbaWorld Comix, and in two books (to date) available through Lulu.

He conducts interviews for YouTube with a big monster puppet, Roscoe P. Kramer, “…because who’s gonna say ‘No’ to a puppet?” As he visits conventions, he records the cheery sessions to advertise both his favorite characters and himself.

At Southern Geekfest, Childress will have original artwork for sale at his artist’s table, as well as his books. Visitors who already have his books can bring them for autographs and doodles. Roscoe will be there, too, enchanting visitors with his toothy smile.

In addition to his original artwork and convention appearances, Childress is available to draw caricatures for events. He also can work from photos by email for caricatures.

Book Review: Art Chantry talks graphic design

Consumers encounter graphic design everywhere they turn. The fonts, colors and shapes of advertisements and publications utilize the designer’s skills to attract attention, intrigue the viewer and direct the buyer toward the sale. As a designer for more than forty years, Art Chantry has seen a lot of techniques and practitioners come and go. He offers his perspective of the business in Art Chantry Speaks: A Heretic’s History of 20th Century Graphic Design.

Chantry considers himself a bit of an outlaw, both working as a graphic designer and making wry observations on the state of the art. His always witty, sometimes acerbic observations share his knowledge of the art’s history and the people within it. Using blog posts collected over a few years, he has put together an intriguing overview of his world.

Describing a graphic designer as a “virtual cultural propagandist,” he chops at the notion of graphic design as high art and reveals many of the subtle influences at work in good design. Both winners and losers come under his examination. He divides the articles into three sections: The Language of Design, Designers and Artists, and Tools of the Trade, Forgotten Processes and Obsolete Objects. Each section contains a variety of articles on aspects of the subject.

The reader will have no doubt as to Chantry’s opinions on any of his subjects. When he loves a subject, he waxes rhapsodic about it. His disdain for some topics swirls like an eddy around the reader’s feet, pushing and pulling at the reader’s understanding of the topic. The volume is no dry textbook, but rather a living commentary on something we all face every day. Chantry uses humor, sarcasm and insight to explain his positions and share the history he lived.

A generous number of illustrations fill the book, as Chantry makes his points about particular styles and artists. Be warned: some upper body nudity and occasional vulgar language make this inappropriate for young readers, in spite of the pretty pictures. Mature readers will take delight in the combination of words and images used in the book.

Each article stands alone, allowing readers to jump directly to subjects of most interest or read out of order. Taken as a whole, the book shares a world few consumers think about but must travel every day. Both educational and entertaining, readers will find when Art Chantry speaks, they should listen.

Part history, part psychology, part snarky opinion, Chantry wraps readers in the stories and leaves them amazed at what goes into graphic design. Art majors will enjoy the panorama of design influence. The rest of us can enjoy the inside look at how our minds get molded by designers.

Frank Ladner offers free video short on YouTube

Indie filmmaker Frank Ladner

Poplarville, Mississippi offers many interesting characters and surprising amenities. One of the most delightful has proven to be indie filmmaker Frank Ladner. His first full length movie, a Southern mockumentary entitled "Hickory Never Bleeds," won several awards at area film festivals following its premiere in 2012. It's available on DVD.

"Max Peril," his second mockumentary, released in 2015 and is still making the rounds of film festivals, garnering multiple awards. It should be available for purchase in early 2016.

Both films have video trailers on YouTube for your pleasure. Don't miss the blooper reels, as well.

While you're waiting for Max to collect his trophies, you can enjoy a free short video on YouTube. Unlike the movies, "Almost Mine - Post-Apocalyptic Romantic Comedy Short Film" offers a scripted story with two charming stars as survivors of an apocalypse, struggling to scrape out a living.

The newsletter highlighted a post about the business of writing by Elizabeth Hunter. "Ten Things I Learned about Publishing in 2015" provides a great overview of many of the issues we face on the business side of writing. Writers need reviewers and here are ways to find them

Every author needs reviews of her work to help future readers make the decision to read her book. The big question becomes, where can an author find reviewers to write those reviews? Here are some ideas of where to track down reviewers.

Even before the book is published, check review sites online. An internet search for “book reviews of [genre]” will provide a strong starting point. Sites already publishing those types of reviews will be likely resources to find reviewers. Some sites, such as RT Book Reviews, specialize in providing reviews in a genre. Approach the review writers listed there and ask if they are available and interested in reviewing your book. Read the fine print on the site; some sites charge to review your book.

Are you member of a writing group or book club? Ask fellow members to read and review your book for you. People you know will be more likely to follow through for you than strangers.

Donate a copy of your book to the local library and ask the staff to review the book for you. How about your local independent bookseller?

Have you met fellow writers at a writing conference? Contact them as potential reviewers.

Check your social media connections for people who will be likely candidates. A blanket post requesting reviewers may get names of interested readers, but evaluate them as to appropriateness before handing over your manuscript. Just because a reader is willing doesn’t mean he’s a good match. Is the book in his area of interest or expertise? Have you seen other reviews he has written?

Look for bloggers in your genre. The blogger may be interested in reviewing your book for the blog. Read the content for several posts to make sure the blogger’s tastes and views parallel your own. If the two of you have dramatic differences of perspective, your book may not get a fair consideration.

Don’t overlook print media. Your local newspaper may provide a venue for book reviews. Regional magazines, newsletters in related industries and organizational magazines can all provide potential reviewers. Choose outlets with an interest in your genre for best results.

Does your publisher have a place for reviews on the company website? Check there for names of potential reviewers. Ask your editor or publicist for names. They have a stake in getting reviews for your book and should be able to provide at least a few names.

Is your book on online sites? Make sure your author information there lets readers know you appreciate their reviews. Tell them how important their reviews are to you and ASK for the review.

Check with other authors in your genre. A mention from someone in the field can carry a lot of weight. Who do you respect in your genre? Who do you read? Contact those writers and ask if they would be interested in reviewing your book. If they say yes, great. If not, thank them nicely and ask if they can suggest someone.

If you sell the book in person, be sure to ask each purchaser to leave a review at his site of choice. Explain how precious his opinion is to you.

People willing to give you a review may not know where to put it. Remind them of the bookseller sites and various book-oriented sites such as GoodReads and Shelfari. If they aren’t willing to post on those sites, offer to post it on your own website or social media page, with their permission.

Always ask for the review. In every interview you give, article you write and presentation you give, remind people how important reviews are to writers.

Above all, make sure to acknowledge the people who provide you with a review. A comment on an online review or a thank you note or email will let the reviewer know you saw the review and appreciated the time invested there.

Second chances and romance found on the bayou in Tina DeSalvo's 'Jewell'

Old pain returns to haunt in 'Courage Resurrected' by R. Scott Mackey

In a richly layered mystery novel, author R. Scott Mackey takes readers on a compelling adventure in northern California with Courage Resurrected. Private investigator Ray Courage receives an email message, purportedly from his dead wife. Old emotions surface as he faces the possibility of her having survived a fiery car crash thirteen years ago.

Mackey’s story leans toward gritty and hard-boiled, even as he describes a world of good people caught in rough circumstances. Rate it R for language and violence, but the story is excellent.

Journey in Heaven by Bob Northey shares beautiful vision

He meets the people who lived the stories of the Bible as well as other new arrivals.

Mary Ellen Hughes does it again! Delicious mystery with a touch of spice

License to Dill, the second book in Mary Ellen Hughes’ Pickled and Preserved Mystery series, takes readers on a thrill ride spiced with good friends and good food. Anyone interested in home food preservation will enjoy the references to spices and preserving techniques. Sports aficionados can thrill to the soccer competition underlying the story. There’s romance and family and lots of intrigue taking place in License to Dill. Classic cars and motorcycles come into the mix as well.
