More and more Internet providers are converting their network to operate over IP. However, to use this new connection technology for making phone calls, you need an IP-capable router. What requirements an IP router must meet and how you can recognize it, you can read here.

What is an IP-capable router

The abbreviation “IP” in IP router stands for “Internet Protocol” and refers to a router in which telephone calls are not made via the fixed network, but via the Internet. For this to work, the router must be able to operate without a splitter and support VoIP. This is the case if the router in question already has a built-in DSL modem and a telephone system is integrated into the device.

How to tell if your router is IP-enabled

If your Internet provider converts your connection to IP operation, it is often still possible to continue using old telephones and faxes. Connect them for this, instead of the splitter simply directly to the IP router.

The continued use of your current router is also possible if it has an IP function.

If you do not know whether your current router supports IP technology, it helps to look at the technical data of the device, which you will find in the operating instructions for most routers.

If you have a router from Telekom, the following models are suitable for use on an IP connection: Speedport Entry, Speedport Smart, Speedport Hybrid, Speedport W723V, W724V, W921V and W922V.

Also the latest Fritzbox routers, such as the Fritzbox 7590 and the Fritzbox 7530, are suitable for use on IP connections.

The NTBA is the transition point between the ISP and the user’s equipment. In many cases, this is the router. If you have problems with the Internet connection, you can determine via NTBA whether the problem is on your side.

How does the NTBA work?

The NTBA (Network Termination for ISDN Basic rate Access) is usually provided to the user, free of charge by the provider. If the communication between the NTBA and the communications provider works, the latter knows that the fault must be on the side of the customer.

It is then connected by the end user to the TAE socket.

The end user is provided with 2 lines and 3 phone number.

To install the NTBA, two screws are simply turned into the wall, into which the NTBA snaps. Then the power plug is connected to the device and plugged into the socket. Now two ISDN sockets can be used to connect the NTBA. The continuous glow of a green LED indicates to the user that the NTBA has been connected correctly.

The use of cordless ISDN phones is no problem. It is simply used an ISDN base station, this then works like a full-fledged telephone system.

Unfortunately, no analog terminals can be operated directly on the NTBA. So that works an a/b converter is needed, which converts the analog signals into digital signals.

Today NTBAs are usually installed directly in a router with. The router is then ISDN-capable and has all the functions that a normal NTBA has.

Each IP address is assigned only once, so you can be uniquely identified. However, if you want to be undetected on the Internet, you must disguise your IP address. Alternatively, you can regularly change your IP address. This can be done manually or with suitable software.

How to change your IP address in Windows 10

Once you have connected your computer to the Internet, you are usually automatically assigned an IP address by the DHCP protocol. However, if you want to change it, this is possible via the Windows settings. Alternatively, you can use third-party software that automatically changes your IP address.

Go to the Control Panel on your computer. You can find this via the Windows 10 search function.

Then select the item “View network status and tasks” and then click on “Change adapter settings”. This button can be found on the left side.

Right-click on your network and then click on “Settings”.

Select the entry “Internet Protocol, Version 4 (TC/IPv4)”.

Activate the option “Use the following IP address”.

Now you can manually enter a desired IP address in the field provided. Note that the address must not already be assigned within your network.

Alternatively, you can use third-party software. Here, for example, Nord-VPN offers itself. After installation, start the tool. The IP address will then be changed automatically.
