Many moons have passed and ATI gave their partners the thumbs up to create little werewolves. See, when it’s a full moon the R5870 turns into something geeky, extraordinary, even a bit hairy. Yes, the OC editions of the Radeon HD 5870 series were unleashed. Unlocked and loaded. As a result we started seeing some really interesting products like Gigabyte’s SOC, MSI’s Lightning, HIS has nice overclocked Turbo models, PowerColor’s PCS++ is good overclocked kit as well.

The one product we have been anticipating however comes from ASUS. And no, we are not even talking about the ARES series but in fact the Matrix Platinum series.

What makes this product series so special is that it has been designed with the ROG team (Republic of Gamers), a small group of enthusiasts within the ASUS campus. Little red colored minions that drink LN2 and taze each other just for fun. They live by one rule only, gain the maximum performance out of a product… and do things right.

As such, they started to design the ASUS Radeon 5870 Matrix Platinum. In all its ways this card needs to be extreme, so we spot a custom PCB, some extraordinary cooling, we see a 2 GB memory size, we spot a standard overclock, but most of all… the card comes with overclock software that allows voltage tweaking on three domains within the graphics card. Now we know that it’s hard, really hard, to get past 1 GHz on the R5870 core with air-cooling. The latest revisions of the GPU have an Especially hard time exceeding that number. This card we actually got clocked to 1050 MHz… and that’s a testimony of the excellence we’ll be reviewing today.

Charlie St. Cloud(Zac Efron) lives a pretty simple life as a gardener for a cemetery. Quiet does not talk to many people, Charlie has not been the same, 5 years ago Charlie barely survived a car crash, but his 11 year old brother Sam(Charlie Tahan) didn’t make it. Charlie becomes overwhembled with sadness and guilt. But something else has come over Charlie, coming out of that crash, he gains the ability to see the spirit of Sam. And for five years it seems to go well. Until Charlie meets Tess(Amanda Crew), and they seem to be very attracted to each other. Now Charlie has to chose, with love for Tess, or continuing to see the spirit of Sam?

A well blend of drama and supernatural. Zac Efron gives a pretty effective performance, so does Charlie Tahan, and they have great scenes together. But his realiontship with Crew felt too forced. They didn’t grow enough too keep our interest, it leaves us confused where it’s going. The film stumbles for the most part, but it was amusing for the other part.

I enjoyed this movie, for what it tries to do. It’s not trying to be an art-house Oscar-bait film. It’s basically a story about a good man who loses himself to grief and how he recovers. The core message of letting go and moving on is a good one, even if it’s a bit one-note.

It’s not a dumb, roll-your-eyes movie and it’s not too clever. It sails the lukewarm line between those two extremes, but is rescued from blandness by Efron’s excellent performance, Tahan’s charm and chemistry with Efron, and Crew’s solidity. Prew also has his moments, and although nobody manages to steal any scenes from Efron, they were all believable. I wish we could have seen a lot more of Basinger and Liotta, though, and Logue’s relative lack of prettiness was actually a kind of relief.

Although the characters are clean, they still do foolish things, loose their tempers, and make poor choices about how to spend their lives. Personally, I’m not as moved by stories where the main character is a self-absorbed, self-destructive jerk who–no surprise–brings pain on him/herself and others and succumbs to the usual pitfalls: alcohol/drugs, meaningless sex, or general idiotic acting out. That might have made the movie “cooler” or made Efron seem edgier, but the story and character wouldn’t have been as resonant for me. I can root for and identify with characters who are trying to do their best, to do the right thing, but it still leads them quite naturally into struggling with personal demons.

In terms of major factors such as build quality, performance, image quality and overall specification, there really isn’t much to choose between the major camera manufacturers. If you’re looking for a high-spec ultra compact with a 4x or 5x zoom wide-angle lens, mechanical image stabilisation, HD video recording, a 6.85cm (2.7 inch) monitor and a resolution of around 10-12 megapixels then there are plenty of models to choose from; Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, Samsung, Olympus, Pentax, Fujifilm and Casio all make cameras fitting that general description. In such a competitive market it’s hard for any one manufacturer to make its products stand out from the crowd. The usual lazy way of doing so is to bump up the megapixel count every few months, and indeed some manufacturers are still doing this despite the abundant evidence that it offers the consumer no benefit in picture quality.

Strengths:

* Low light images are excellent.
* Sweep Panorama is not just a gimmick!
* Face and Smile detection work well.
* Nice build with minor exception including access door.
* Good LCD.
* Good AF.
* Burst Mode.

Weaknesses:

Size I’m putting in the weakness column as this is another almost too small camera. The controls border on being difficult as they are all very close together.
* For what should be optimum lighting for a camera, adjustments are needed to get optimum performance, and it seems to change.
* A couple of features can get in the way including the Dynamic Range Optimization and the Intelligent mode sometimes isn’t.
* No viewfinder, but that’s common.
* I am not a fan of the Sony Memory Stick Flash, but it works.
* A little slippery with sweaty fingers or probably gloves (but I haven’t tried that).
* I don’t like where the wrist strap connect in the middle of the camera, though for a neck strap being centered it would be better than many small cameras.

The 3 star rating is based on the full price of the camera, the less than overwhelming images in all modes and that this is a potential ’slip through my fingers’ camera.
