Taunting words spoken quick,
A jesting rhyme, as it were:
“Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But words will never hurt”

But it’s no joke – never was –
That’s not the least bit true.
Careless words meant in fun
Can still beat one black and blue.

Some wounds you will never see
They’re made with words alone.
But words hurt worse than sticks
And break far more than bone.

Be careful what you say, Dear,
Think twice before you speak.
For you may one day find
Words of comfort YOU will seek.

A dream has haunted me since my years were few. A beautiful dream that held me in its spell. Every now and then I thought that it might actually come true.

But the dream never lasted long in the harsh light of day. The reality always proved to have a faulty foundation webbed with tiny cracks that eventually compromised the whole and brought it crashing down, leaving me crumpled under the ruins.

Time after time, I painfully dug my way out, wondering what had happened and why my dream crumbled when it became reality. Each time my dream crumbled, a little piece of me crumbled with it. And each time took longer for me to heal than the last.

One day, my dream crumbled yet again, and I realized that it crumbled because it was an impossible dream. I resigned myself to life without the dream, tucking it away into the hidden corners of my memory, hoping that one day I would come to forget. A dream that cannot be reality is torment.

Push back the silent tears;
Dress up in perfect style
From toe tip to your hair.

Show them what they want to see –
A happy, perfect life.
You’re the best girl around –
A model mom and wife.

They do not know or care
That you are really dead,
Filled not with happiness
But misery instead.

Bottle it all up tight
And throw away the key.
Put on a happy face
For everyone to see.

Thank You, Father, for Making Me

1. God made the mountains tall, and God made the trees.
God made the leaves that fall, and He made the seas.
All creatures large and small – Elephants and bees –
Aren’t you glad that God made them all?

Chorus
Thank you, Father, for making me.
Thank you, Father, for everything I see.
Thank you, Father, and help me always be
Grateful for what you’ve done for me.

2. God made the fishies in the ocean blue.
God made the little birdies in their nest.
God made puppies, and He made kittens, too.
Don’t you think that God knows what’s best?

I wrote the lyrics and music for this song when I was in high school. It is intended for use with preschool and kindergarten age children. Eventually (soon, I hope), I will have this available as sheet music.
