I’m writing this… on a computer. For most of my life, that would be so mundane and so obvious that it’d be idiotic to even mention it. But now, I honestly never thought I’d see a blinking cursor ever again. Overhead, there are fluorescent lights. A breeze is blowing from an air conditioner. In the deepest bowels of this hole they ironically call ”The Tower,” I’m living my old life. Except I’m faced with what the true price of getting that life back would be. The people that live down here – the protectors of The Tower’s secrets – count Grace Beaumont among them, the woman Ben told me to find way back when I was just leaving our cul-de-sac. I can’t even process everything that’s happened since then, not even the stuff that’s happened in the last two weeks. Because all this time, we’ve been working to get the lights back on, but now Grace is telling me about the horror story the world could turn into if Rachel flips the switch. I just can’t see how the world could get much worse, but once you start talking about the oxygen in the atmosphere igniting…And here’s the thing. Rachel knew. She knew there were insane risks to this plan that she wasn’t telling me – yet another set of secrets that might have turned me around 400 miles ago if I’d known… which is, I’m sure, why she didn’t tell me.

Rachel says it’s a one in a billion chance. So you have to ask yourself: what level of risk is worth it? What would I be willing to give up to feel this cool breeze again? To get back my old life? Because I’ve already given up a lot. I left my home, the only place I’ve truly felt safe since the lights went out. I risked my life, over and over and over. I lost friends. Too many friends.

I can’t help but wonder what Maggie would say if she was here. She was as practical as anyone I’ve known. And she’d come to accept a lot of things about the way the world is now, but she carried that iPhone with her until the day she died, hoping to get just one more look at her kids’ faces. Imagine what she would say if offered a chance to fly back to England to find them. How could she say no? Even if it was a risk – and even if the risk was that her kids would die horribly?

I try to rationalize it by saying it’s worth the risk to help all of mankind. That, if I’m somehow connected to all this, I owe humanity my best shot at fixing things… but the truth is, I want the power back for myself. Because I’ve been sitting at this computer for five minutes, and it feels like I never stepped away. I want this life back. I wish it felt like I deserved it. More than that, I wish I knew who to trust. I wish Ben was here. Of course, given everything I’ve learned – could I even trust him?

Considering what I’m about to do – this will probably be my last entry. So, to whoever finds this journal, first off, hello, and second, I hope you can find it in your heart not to use these pages as toilet paper or to start a fire. My name is Aaron Pittman and as unbelievable as it may sound, for the last few months, I have been on a quest to turn the power back on. Yes, as far as I know, I am not crazy. And no, I’m not joking. As of this moment, I find myself alone – in the middle of nowhere – about to enter a place called The Tower and attempt the seemingly impossible. I realize how ridiculous it is to write a letter to someone who will more than likely never receive it, but if – when – the lights come on and you happen to stumble upon this, please find Charlie Matheson and give this to her, because it is my last will and testament.

To Charlie:
What you should know is – your mother died a hero. She walked into the middle of a Militia camp and killed Monroe herself. She told me it was for Danny, but I think she also did it for you. She did it so this whole thing would end and you could finally have the life she always wanted for you. She loved you, Charlie, even if she was bad at saying it. If I’m truly gone, I leave you the three-and-a-half postcards in the left pocket of my backpack. Stop fighting. See the world, and never forget how beautiful it can be.

To Nora:
You’ll never know how much it meant to me to have you with us. I may love the old world, but you love something better. You fight for an America greater than the one that fell, and one I desperately wanted to live in. With Monroe gone, I know you will not only make this dream a reality, but you’ll make one hell of a mother.

To Miles:
I’m not gonna lie. I dreamed of knocking you out and leaving you for dead on more than one occasion – 27 actually. But despite your mildly sociopathic behavior and unfunny fat jokes, you have a heart. It might be three sizes too small, but it’s big enough to make up for your many wrongs. You won. The world forgives you. Start over. As a thanks, I leave you my flask. There’s a dent in it from a bullet. Enough said.

And to Priscilla:
Thank you for loving this silly, clumsy fool. I will never forgive myself for leaving you but please know, no matter the outcome, I did everything in my power to give you and your daughter a world where the strong no longer prey on the weak. I love you and I will see you again.

So… famous last words, right? For those about to rock, I salute you.

The Blackout changed people. That much is obvious, just look around – the incidence of bandit mobs and mass cannibalism has to have ticked up at least, I don’t know, infinity percent. Even I’ve changed. And I don’t just mean that I’m older and grumpier, although that’s damn sure the case. There are things I’ve done that made me sick, like leaving Priscilla. But I’ve also done things I’d have never thought I was capable of, like fighting my way across the continent to get Danny back.

People have changed, and I have to believe that the Rachel I’m walking next to has changed from the person I knew at the cul-de-sac. Set aside for a second the miracle I saw her perform, healing her broken leg with nothing more than a hacked-together computer and a capsule she got from God-knows-where. The Rachel I thought I knew… she never would have left a sick kid to die. To her, family was everything. People were everything. So what happened to that Rachel, the one that took me in when I was at my lowest point? I thought the reason we were marching across this barren dustbowl was to make the world better – to help people, not leave them to rot. I never thought I’d have to say this, but I want to be on the side that fights for good. If this really is a suicide mission, like Rachel keeps on insisting it is, I’m gonna need my suicide to count for something. Because Rachel flat-out told me she’s doing this for revenge, and – I loved Danny like he was my own son. I really did. And if Monroe was in front of me right now, I’d gladly be the one holding the knife that slit his throat. But Rachel’s talking about thousands of people dying, maybe millions more, and I can’t be a part of that. And part of me hates her for asking me to. The same part that wants to grab her by the shoulders and scream at her, ask her where the hell the Rachel I used to know went. But I know I wouldn’t like the answer.

And about that miracle… could Rachel have done that at any point? She says it doesn’t work on everything, and I believe her. I mean, she never would have let Danny die if the capsule could have saved him. But mending flesh and bone – that’s huge. How many other injuries could she have healed back at the Rebel camp? Why didn’t she tell us? When you find out someone’s got secrets that big, it makes you wonder – what else isn’t she telling us? Was it the Blackout that changed Rachel? Was it the years she spent with Monroe? Or was she this broken from the start?

Every day out here it gets colder, it gets harder to find food, harder to find shelter. People in the Plains Nation are clinging to life, but a different kind of life than we had in the Monroe Republic. It’s less about living and more about surviving. But still, that kid that Rachel left to fate… he looked just like the kids I grew up with. He could have been my friend. He could have been me. And we’re walking away from him, leaving him to die – horribly.

Every step we take gets us one step closer to The Tower. I only wish I knew who I was walking next to.

I never thought I’d say it… but I really miss the Monroe Republic. Sure it’s dangerous and six types of awful and if you stare at a Militia soldier too long he might just decide to up and gut you. But at least there, I knew what to be scared of. If I got sick or broke my leg, Maggie was there to take care of me. But out here, breaking your leg is a death sentence. The devil you know, I suppose. The Plains Nation is… well… I guess ”vast” is a good way to describe it. Actually, vast and hard and miserable and remarkably flat. You can walk for days on end and it seems like you haven’t moved an inch. Most of the people we come across live in these humongous moving tent cities that follow the good weather, which is still terrible. I can’t help but notice none of them are going the same direction we are – so that’s great. But the absolute worst part of this whole trip is the stories we hear. Growing up, I never really believed in ghosts or vampires or werewolves. Okay, maybe aliens, but none of that supernatural stuff. And I know information has to travel a long way out here, so I’m sure facts are the first things that get discarded along the way. But after everything I’ve seen recently, it’s getting harder and harder to discount the fantastic. So when an old woman tells you her son was devoured by cannibals or a little girl warns you not to wear red because it attracts plains rats (which by her reach, measure a good foot above her head), you tend not to sleep too soundly.

We ran out of food a few days ago. We went to one of the local tribes for help but they were either too wary or too hard to give us anything. So I stole something – just a bag of dried meat – and they found out. One of them tracked us down. Apparently, they only have one penalty for committing a crime out here… and it’s not a stern talking-to. Rachel and I had to kill three people just to survive, all over a stupid bag of jerky.

There is an article about me in Dr. Warren’s journal. A newspaper clipping. So why does the woman who helped turn the lights off have an article about me while I was in college? Is it just a crazy coincidence? I have absolutely no idea. But like I said, I’ve seen too many things recently to discount the fantastic, both good and bad. So even if I don’t want to be out here – and God knows I don’t – the only way I’m going to find the answers I’m looking for is by staying.

But here’s the problem: out here, breaking your leg is a death sentence. And Rachel just broke her leg.

During my freshman year at MIT, most of the guys in my dorm would stay up insanely late trying to think up an idea that would change the world. Unfortunately, this pursuit usually just turned into betting someone to do something stupid. Case in point, I remember one night I bet my friend Gary 50 bucks that he couldn’t down three flaming vodka shots in under a minute. He gladly accepted the challenge and we set them ablaze. However, as we were stupid college freshmen, we didn’t know that you have to blow out the flame before drinking and sadly, Gary didn’t realize this until it was too late. Terrified, he spit the vodka out – momentarily resembling a screaming dragon – and lit the common room ping-pong table on fire. Luckily, someone else grabbed a fire extinguisher while I hid in the corner laughing, fairly certain I had just witnessed the best fire story of my life.I was wrong. Yesterday, I saw two men spontaneously combust in front of me. Apparently the nanites that are constantly absorbing the flow of electricity are also able to expel it on command, turning our would-be rapists into Kentucky-fried Militia. Sorry, Gary. Dr. Warren wins. But what has really boggled my mind since witnessing this event is – the Blackout is potentially the LEAST amazing thing these little machines can do.

I mean if these things are everywhere – and I mean EVERYWHERE – the possibilities are limitless. Medically, we could wipe out sickness and disease. Ischemic heart disease? Nanites could clear your arteries in a day. HIV? Who needs white blood cells when you’ve got little robots fighting infection for you? And cancer? Well, it wouldn’t stand a chance against machines that eat tumors for breakfast.

As a weapon – I have a feeling Private Burns and Private Ash were just the tip of the iceberg. My friends are back east, wandering the countryside, searching for a nuclear weapon – and I’ve found something that makes it look like a blowgun. Warheads are useless when you have the potential to neutralize irradiated uranium anywhere on the planet.

But even with all the ungodly scary ideas bouncing through my head at the moment, there’s a potential for miracles. In agriculture, we could purify contaminated water, replenish dead soil and breakdown waste – almost instantly. By changing things at the atomic level, we could literally turn charcoal into diamonds – or make better, brand new materials. Hell, if we want to get crazy, we could give ourselves new abilities. Imagine nanites oxygenating your blood, practically allowing you to breathe underwater. We could reinforce our skin to live in more aggressive climates. We could change our eyes to see at night. And… I’m just getting started.

Since the Blackout, I’ve dreamed of a day when the lights would come back on. But if these things are what I think they are, this quest isn’t just about putting things back the way they were – it’s about finding a way to make the world better than it ever was before.
