Pregnant orangutan protects her daughter as Borneo hunters move in to kill

Orangutans are being haunted in Borneo because business companies think they are "pests" to the palm oil plantations. Deforestation had become their solution to increase their revenues, thus gave major threat to the apes - a loss of their habitat. A brutal form of reducing their numbers has emerged in the recent years - direct slaughter.

As bounty hunters search for the orangutans to kill, a pregnant orangutan mother was pictured hugging her daughter tight, her only way to protect her from danger.

Thanks to the team from Britain, an international animal rescue group Four Paws who arrived in time to save them. The apes were moved to a safe area and released back into the wild.

Deforestation in the Indonesian side of Borneo, which is shared with Malaysia, has dramatically reduced orangutans numbers from 250,000 to 50,000 just over in the last few decades.

Companies are reported to be giving out $110 for each orangutan killed in the palm oil plantations. Graves and bones of the poor apes were found by investigators last September. What a merciful and shameless act!

British Four Paws said the killing of orangutans is illegal in Indonesia, but law lacks enforcement.

Why would Mark Zuckerberg shut down the site that generates him billions?

The clever guys from Weekly World News, a satirical/humor/supernatural/paranormal and fictional news site, brought another scoop to the highest level.

Here's the news:

PALO ALTO, CA –Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook will be shut down in March of 2012. Managing the site has become too stressful.

“Facebook has gotten out of control,” said Zuckerberg in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office, “and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Zuckerberg went on to explain that starting March 15th of next year, users will no longer be able to access their Facebook accounts. That gives users (and Facebook addicts) a year to adjust to life without Facebook.

“After March 15th, 2012 the whole website shuts down,” said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back after Facebook goes out of business.”

Zuckerberg said the decision to shut down Facebook was difficult, but that he does not think people will be upset.

“I personally don’t think it’s a big deal,” he said in a private phone interview. “And to be honest, I think it’s for the better. Without Facebook, people will have to go outside and make real friends. That’s always a good thing.”

Some Facebook users were furious upon hearing the shocking news.

“What am I going to do without Facebook?” said Denise Bradshaw, a high school student from Indiana. “My life revolves around it. I’m on Facebook at least 10 hours a day. Now what am I going to do with all that free time?”

However, parents across the country have been experiencing a long anticipated sense of relief.

“I’m glad the Facebook nightmare is over,” said Jon Guttari, a single parent from Detroit. “Now my teenager’s face won’t be glued to a computer screen all day. Maybe I can even have a conversation with her.”

Those in the financial industry are criticizing Zuckerberg for walking away from a multibillion dollar franchise. Facebook is currently ranked as one of the wealthiest businesses in the world, with economists estimating its value at around 7.9 billion.

But Zuckerberg remains unruffled by these accusations. He said he will stand by his decision to give Facebook the axe.

“I don’t care about the money,” said Zuckerberg. “I just want my old life back.”

The Facebook Corporation suggests that users remove all of their personal information from the website before March 15th, 2012. After that date, all photos, notes, links, and videos will be permanently erased.

So there, as soon as the SOPA and PIPA isn't approved in the US yet, then we shouldn't worry about updating our profile and living lives in Facebook.

We all know that EDSA is one of the busiest, most traffic-congested roads in Metro Manila. And thousands of vehicles that pass through it generate more and more air pollution which is proven to bring harm to our health.

The good guys from Boysen started a bright idea to at least lessen air pollution in the longest avenue in Metro Manila.

The Boysen KNOxOUT Project aims to make life better along EDSA by featuring artworks in the walls of the roads by using a breakthrough paint that contains the new CrystalActiv technology, which uses titanium oxide. This material is activated when exposed to sufficient energy like sunlight or ambient light to create a film that neutralizes any pollutants like NOx (nitrogen oxide) and SOx (sulfur oxide) that come into contact with it.

The Boysen KNOxOUT Project: EDSA is a large-scale urban renewal project that challenges the odds against making life better along EDSA, the longest and one of the most traffic-congested avenues in Metro Manila.

This massive endeavor will involve 11 internationally circulating artists who will conceptualize eight massive artworks in a number of areas within the 24 kilometer length of EDSA.

The project will use Boysen KNOxOUT, a breakthrough paint that contains the new CrystalActiv technology, which uses titanium oxide. This material is activated when exposed to sufficient energy like sunlight or ambient light to create a film that neutralizes any pollutants like NOx (nitrogen oxide) and SOx (sulfur oxide) that come into contact with it. Symantec advises customers to disable software

Computer security firm Symantec has advised its customers to disable one of its products, in time for the hacker's theft to the underlying code that powers the software.

Symantec said the theft occurred in 2006, compromising 2006-era version of Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition, Norton Internet Security and Norton SystemWorks. Experts warned that the theft of the code behind the remote access package pcAnywhere could allow malicious users to gain complete access to systems and data.

The company recommended in an online statement to disable the product until they release a "final set of software updates that resolve current known vulnerability risks". Earlier, Symantec said customers need no additional actions in light of the breach.

Experts say that the incident was more of a business threat, rather than anything else. Symantec may face potential loss of market share and loss of trust from its customers.

In the newly released security advisory, Symantec offers suggestions for tightening security in light of the code theft. Ira Victor, a security expert with Data Clone Labs in Nevada suggests four additional steps to greater protection:

1. Do not use a "suite" of security protection from any one firm. A mixture of best of breed security is more secure.

2. Usernames and passwords alone are not enough protection for remote access. A single-use password system makes unauthorized remote access exponentially harder for cybercriminals.

3. Do not run computers in "Administrator" mode. Run systems in "User mode" so that malware does not install automatically.

4. Businesses should deploy application "whitelisting." This will prevent unauthorized malware from running on computers.

Oral sex linked to throat cancer

Scientists looked at tissue samples from patients.

A virus contracted through oral sex is the cause of some throat cancers, say US scientists.

HPV infection was found to be a much stronger risk factor than tobacco or alcohol use, the Johns Hopkins University study of 300 people found.

The New England Journal of Medicine study said the risk was almost nine times higher for people who reported oral sex with more than six partners.

But experts said a larger study was needed to confirm the findings.

HPV infection is the cause of the majority of cervical cancers, and 80% of sexually active women can expect to have an HPV infection at some point in their lives.

The Johns Hopkins study took blood and saliva from 100 men and women newly diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer which affects the throat, tonsils and back of the tongue.

They also asked questions about sex practices and other risk factors for the disease, such as family history.

Those who had evidence of prior oral HPV infection had a 32-fold increased risk of throat cancer.

HPV16 - one of the most common cancer-causing strains of the virus - was present in the tumours of 72% of cancer patients in the study.

Risk factors

There was no added risk for people infected with HPV who also smoked and drank alcohol, suggesting the virus itself is driving the risk of the cancer.

Oral sex was said to be the main mode of transmission of HPV but the researchers said mouth-to-mouth transmission, for example through kissing, could not be ruled out.

Most HPV infections clear with little or no symptoms but a small percentage of people who acquired high-risk strains may develop a cancer, the researchers added.

Study author Dr Gypsyamber D'Souza said: "It is important for health care providers to know that people without the traditional risk factors of tobacco and alcohol use can nevertheless be at risk of oropharyngeal cancer."

Co-researcher Dr Maura Gillison said previous research by the team had suggested there was a strong link.

But she added: "People should be reassured that oropharyngeal cancer is relatively uncommon and the overwhelming majority of people with an oral HPV infection probably will not get throat cancer."

A vaccine which protects against cervical cancer caused by HPV strains 6, 11, 16 and 18, and also against genital warts is available and the researchers said the study provided a rationale for vaccinating both girls and boys.

But whether the vaccine would protect against oral HPV infection is not yet known.

Dr Julie Sharp, science information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: "There is conflicting evidence about the role of HPV, and this rare type of mouth cancer.

"As this was a small study, further research is needed to confirm these observations."

"We know that after age, the main causes of mouth cancer are smoking or chewing tobacco or betel nut, and drinking too much alcohol."

Cloie Syquia-Skarne, daughter of Gabby Concepcion and Jenny Syquia, signed a three-year contract with Viva Entertainment. Her mom actress, who had a showbiz hiatus and now back, also signed.

Cloie will be joining her ate KC Concepcion in the showbiz world.

Viva Artist Agency all manages Gabby, Sharon Cuneta, and KC. Now they are joined by Jenny and Cloie (who stands 5'7" tall!). Isn't that meant to be?

Saudi lifts ban on hiring Pinoy maids, sets monthly wage, holiday

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has agreed to lift the one-year ban on hiring Filipina maids, according to a report from Emirates 24/7.

Saudi and the Philippines agreed to setting the monthly salary of maids working in the Arab country at a minimum of SR1,500 ($400). Moreover, the employer must give the maid a weekly day off and an annual holiday of at least 30 days.

The agreement also grants Pinay maids free ticket during their trip back to the country every year. They will have the right to keep their passports during their stay in the Gulf Kingdom.

"Under the agreement, the employer must also open a bank account for the housemaid to transfer her salary to the bank at the end of every month…the employer is also bound to provide the maid with decent housing and food or an allowance for the two," the Saudi daily Alhayat said.

Likewise, employers must also bear all fees related to visa, residence, arrival, and departure while they must treat their maids nicely and avoid forcing them to work at another house.

Since July 2 last year, Saudi Arabia suspended visas for maids from the Philippines and Indonesia in response to curbs on their travel at home following series of incidents involving maids.

A high-ranking Saudi labor delegation visited the Philippines and Indonesia, in which a tentative agreement was signed, newspapers said late last year.

More than 1.5 million housemaids from the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other Asian and African nations work in Saudi Arabia. The world's top oil supplying nation has been under fire from local and foreign human rights groups due to the death of some housemaids and improper treatment to them.

ABS-CBN's noontime show "Happy Yipee Yehey" will have its final episode on February 4, as confirmed by an e-mail sent to Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) by Bong Osorio, the network's Corporate Communications Head.

The show's last episode will also feature the grand finals of the segment "My Girl", which will be held in AFP Theater on Saturday.

The ABS-CBN Management has given thanks to the hosts and staff who worked hard to give the viewers a "happy, yipee, yehey" experience. No worries to the hosts, because the management added they will be given new projects.

"Happy Yipee Yehey!" started airing last February 12, 2011 and hosted by John Estrada, Randy Santiago, Toni Gonzaga, Bianca Manalo, Melai Cantiveros, Jason Francisco, John Prats, Pokwang, and Rico J. Puno.

Corona's daughter bought P18M property

MANILA, Philippines—Chief Justice Renato Corona’s daughter had an income of only more than P8,000 in 2009 when she bought a multi-million peso property in a posh subdivision in Quezon City, the chief of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday said.

Testifying before the Senate impeachment court, BIR Commissioner Kim Henares revealed that the Corona’s daughter, Carla Corona-Castillo, declared a “taxable” income” of P8,476 in 2009.

But a deed of sale presented to the Senate showed that Carla bought a property in La-Vista amounting to P18 million on October 18, 2010, just 10 months after she declared her income tax returns with the BIR.

Carla bought the property from her parents—the Chief Justice and wife, Cristina.

“That daughter has barely minimal income and therefore is not capable of buying the property,” said Henares.

But Corona’s lead counsel, former Supreme Court Associate Serafin Cuevas, moved to strike out Henares statement, saying it was “irrelevant, impertinent, and immaterial.”

Henares was however allowed to continue with her testimony and proceeded with the details of the transaction.

But when Henares gave the Senate information about the sale of the property, Cuevas repeated his objection, citing the Senate impeachment court’s ruling against presentation of evidence pertaining to the alleged ill-gotten wealth of Corona and his family.

Senate President Juan Ponce-Enrile, the presiding officer, explained that the evidence was being offered for “unreported assets.”

Negros Occidental representative Ignacio "Iggy" Arroyo passed away on Thursday in London, according to reports.

He is the brother of former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.

Iggy, 60, is in London for his liver treatment.

Iggy was first elected as Congressman for the 5th District of Negors Occidental in 2004 and was re-elected in 2007 and 2010.

Some of the bills he passed on and authored are the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008, Philippine Climate Change Act of 2008, and the Seafarers Act of 2008.

Afghan mother gives sextuplet birth

The babies are well but underweight, say doctors.

An Afghan mother felt real exhausted after she gave birth to six babies at a hospital in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan.

The woman, named as Sharah, 24, was not aware she was carrying sextuplets, and had not received fertility treatment. She gave birth to three boys and three girls, and was her first ever pregnancy.

The babies were being taken care inside incubators. Special team of nurses and doctors took in charge and looked after the sextuplets.

According to the doctors, having six children without fertility treatment is extremely rare. The Islamic Asian country has one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world.

Sharah's story made headlines on local TV and radio stations.

Sharah is exhausted after giving birth.

Residents applauded her for her courage in carrying six children and giving birth. Many appealed for the government to help her.

A 2010 survey revealed that infant and under-fives mortality rates appeared to be decreasing.

Experts say that despite recent improvements, Afghanistan remains one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a pregnant woman or a young child.

Statistics show that one in 10 children in Afghanistan still dies before they are five years old, the survey said.

2 killed, 3 injured in Taguig blast

MANILA, Philippines – An explosion occurred in Lower Bicutan, Taguig City on Wednesday afternoon, killing 2 people and injuring 3 others.

Initial investigation showed that the 2 fatalities were attempting to defuse a bomb in the vicinity of Camp Bagong Diwa when it suddenly exploded, according to Taguig City police chief Senior Superintendent Tomas Apolinario.

The wounded victims were rushed to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment.

Authorities have yet to determine if the explosive was a vintage bomb or an improvised explosive device.

Investigations are ongoing.

There is life on Venus, says Russian scientist

With temperatures higher than 471 degrees Celsius, most living creatures on Earth would not survive if they go to Venus. The planet is the second closest to Sun, and is known to have superheated sulfuric acid surface and scorching heat.

But according to a Russian scientist named Leonid Ksanfomaliti, life is possible on Venus. He claims to have discovered objects resembling living beings at photographs taken by Russian landing probe Venus-13 in 1982.

Ksanfomaliti of the Space Research Institute of Russia's Academy of Sciences published a research in Solar System Research magazine that analyzed the photographs from the planet's mission.

According to him, the photographs resemble a "disk", a "black flap", and a "scorpion".

Russian scientist Ksanfomaliti said he had spotted several objects semmed to move, including a disc. Experts say it's just probably a lens cap.

He said that all of them "emerge, fluctuate and disappear", referring to their changing location on different photographs and traces on the ground.

"What if we forget about the current theories about the non-existence of life on Venus, let's boldly suggest that the objects' morphological features would allow us to say that they are living," the magazine quoted Ksanfomaliti as saying.

Court awards coco levy shares in SMC to coco farmers' fund

The Supreme Court –by a unanimous 11 – 0 vote—upheld the Sandiganbayan decision to award a 24 percent block of shares in San Miguel Corporation to the Coconut Industry Investment Fund (CIIF), which is also known as the coco levy fund.

SC court administrator and spokesman Jose Midas Marquez confirmed the ruling.

Justices Teresita Leonardo de Castro and Diosdado Peralta inhibited from the case because they were members of the Sandiganbayan when it was decided. Justice Arturo Brion is on official leave of absence.

Senior Justice Antonio Carpio inhibited because he was one of the petitioners in a case back when he was the chief presidential legal counsel of former President Fidel Ramos.

The coco levy shares consists of a 753,848,312 block of shares valued at about P100 billion. The shares were purchased using coco levy funds collected from coconut farmers from 1973 to 1982 and deposited in the United Coconut Planters Bank where SMC chairman Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco was the president and director.

In 1986, the coco levy shares were sequestered by the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) on suspicion that the shares were illegally acquired by the associates of the late President Ferdinand Marcos.

In April 12 last year, the high court declared that the 20-percent stake of Cojuangco in SMC is not part of the coconut levy funds.

In a separate ruling, SC also said the conversion of the 24 percent SMC shares in the names of CIIF and its companies from common shares to preferred shares preserved the value of the 753.8 million SMC shares.

President Benigno S. Aquino III had earlier ordered a task force to ascertain how the coco levy funds can be used for the benefit of coconut farmers and the coconut industry, which has recently experienced a surge in exports.

2011 exports of coconut were expected to hit $2 billion on strong global demand. The National Statistics Office said that its January-to-September data showed coconut oil exports reached $1.17 billion. Dessicated coconut exports reached nearly $217 million while copra meal was $46.42 million.

Coconut juice exports receipts at $8.366 million were not yet significant enough to be disaggregated from other coconut products.

To sustain the pace of growth, the government plans to plant 13 million coconut trees nationwide starting next year and fertilize 20 million senile trees. These moves are seen to increase coconut production to three million metric tons starting in 2012.

Gunmen kill 15 fishermen in Basilan

Gunmen have killed 15 fishermen in Pagadian, Basilan, the military said on Tuesday. Three others were wounded in an attack by suspected local rivals asserting claims to physical territories.

Armed with assault rifles, men killed the fishermen in a sea attack off the southern island of Basilan on Monday, regional military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Randolph Cabangbang told AFP.

"They (victims) were fishing on another group's turf," Cabangbang told AFP in a telephone interview.

Cabangbang added that authorities had ruled out potential involvement of the MILF, who are also active in Basilan.

Police have identified several suspects and arrests are expected shortly, Cabangbang said, adding that a military unit was ordered to provide security for police investigators.

"The suspects are heavily armed," he added.

The victims were all residents of Pagadian City, about 160 kilometers to the northeast, and were attacked as soon as their three boats approached the tiny island of Sibago, off Basilan's east coast.

Other fishermen in the area later discovered the shooting and took the three wounded victims to hospital, Cabangbang said.

The bodies of the 15 dead fishermen were taken back to Pagadian, he added.

After staying for GMA 7 for quite a long time, Iza Calzado has transferred to the rival network ABS-CBN.

Iza signed her contract as the newest Kapamilya talent.

Rumors circulated about the actress' network switch. She was seen on the Kapamilya float during the Sinulog festival.

Iza is slated to do projects with ABS-CBN, including a Maalaala Mo Kaya guesting, a movie with John Lloyd Cruz and Sarah Geronimo, and a hosting job for The Biggest Loser Doubles: Pinoy Edition.

A fire is currently razing houses in a residential area in Imperial Street in Cubao, Quezon City around 2:20 PM.

Firetrucks came to the area after about five minutes.

Ramgen murder suspect surrenders

One of the suspects in the Ramgen Revilla slay has surrendered to authorities on Tuesday morning.

Ryan Pastera, surrendered to the NBI on Tuesday, January 24. He was pinpointed by Ramgen's girlfriend Janelle Manahan, who was at the crime scene and prime witness of the case, as the one who hired the gunman of Ramgen.

The Parañaque City Regional Trial also ordered the arrest of Pastera, Glaiza Visda, Norwin dela Cruz and Ramgen’s sister, Ramona, in connection with the slay case.

Pastera appeared to the NBI last December, but also filed his counter-affidavit and only learned of his arrest warrant through media. His lawyer said Pastera only went to the province for a vacation.

Pastera will temporarily stay in NBI cell but will eventually be transferred to Parañaque City jail.
