David Archuleta sang the Southborder hit (years ago) "Wherever You Are" during the Close-Up Pyropalooza 2012 held at the SM Mall of Asia on Saturday, February 11. Jay Durias was at the piano.

I thought it was great! David should come back to the country after his two-year Mormon mission. He is so much loved by the Filipino people! In fact, he's so Pinoy now after his stay in the country for a few weeks, to shoot for TV5's upcoming mini-serye "Nandito Ako".

Binibining Pilipinas 2012 Official Candidates

The nation's most beautiful ladies have been selected by the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc.

Thirty (30) young ladies will vie for the titles that will represent our country in various international beauty competitions. The candidates were chosen from among the hundred beauties who auditioned from the start of the month.

Current and past reigning beauty queens including Miss Universe 2011 third runner up Shamcey Supsup, Miss International 2005 Lara Quigaman, Bb. Pilipinas World 2009 Marie Ann Umali and Miss Universe 1999 first runner up Miriam Quiambao also helped select the candidates.

The 30 official candidates will be surfaced to the media tomorrow. Coronation night will be held on April 15, and will be broadcast live on ABS-CBN Channel 2.

Whitney Houston dead

Whitney Houston, a multiplatinum pop/R&B singer who ruled the charts for decades beginning in the mid-1980s, has died. Houston was 48. While details such as cause and location of her death are still unknown, Houston's publicist Kristen Foster confirms to MTV News on Saturday (February 11).

Houston had recently staged a comeback in 2009, after a tumultuous divorce from singer Bobby Brown in 2006 after 14 years of marriage. The ex-couple have a daughter together, Bobbi Kristina. Brown and Houston battled substance abuse issues throughout their marriage, and their travails were well-publicized. But in recent years, Houston had made attempts to revive her once thriving music career only to find that her show-stopping voice had gathered some rust.

At her height, Houston was the music industry's reigning diva, releasing chart-topping albums well into the late 1990s, and earning her place as one of the best-selling artists in the world. Her unparalleled voice and All-American beauty propelled her onto the silver screen as well, with roles in the "The Bodyguard" and "Waiting to Exhale." The soundtrack for the former film yielded a string of hit singles and broke myriad chart records as well.

Houston, the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston and the late John Houston, was discovered by Arista Records honcho Clive Davis in the early-1980s and he would go on to guide her career to the tune of 170 million albums sold. The iconic singer's hit songs — from "The Greatest Love of All" to "I Will Always Love You" — are now radio staples and firmly entrenched in the pop music canon.

Her influence can be heard on a generation of young singers who cite her as an inspiration, from Mariah Carey, Brandy and Monica to Christina Aguilera and Beyonce.

But Houston was dogged by her demons. In a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey she detailed the years of addiction and the toll they had taken on her personal and professional lives.

Ex-Rep. Nanette Daza's boyfriend shot dead

Former Quezon City 4th District Representative Nanette Castelo-Daza's boyfriend was shot dead inside her home in Brgy. Teachers Villaga East in Quezon City on Friday night.

Neighbors described the incident as a heated argument between Daza's son-in-law Allan Robes, board member of Bulacan province, and 55-year old Noerl Orate, Sr., Daza's slain boyfriend.

Following the incident, Robes was arrested and is now detained at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit in Camp Karingal.

The former congresswoman was meanwhile brought to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

Orate Sr. obtained five shots in different body parts, which killed him instantly.

MANILA, Philippines - Sparks will literally fly as American Idol star David Archuleta serenades lovers amid a spectacular fireworks display in Close Up Pyropalooza today at SM Mall of Asia.

Archuleta is in the country shooting for his mini-seriesNandito Ako on TV 5, one of the projects he’s going to complete before embarking on a two-year proselytizing or service mission for the Church of Jesus, Christ of Latter-day Saints. Every male member of the church is expected to serve 18 to 24-month religious missions.

Kapuso homegrown talent Carla Abellana is reportedly having talks with ABS-CBN executives for her rumored transfer.

According to a report by the Manila Bulletin, Carla will leave her home network GMA 7 to transfer to ABS-CBN. Her contract expires this month.

It can be recalled that Iza Calzado, Carmina Villaroel, Patrick Garcia, and Paulo Avelino all left the Kapuso network just recently.

Would this be Carla's turn?

Her manager Arnold Vegafria reportedly decided to accept the offer from ABS-CBN.

The source also said that of all GMA 7's artists, Marian Rivera, Barbie Forteza, and Bea Binene (in that order) are the top priorities.

Betong wins 'Survivor'

Comedian and TV personality Betong Sumaya was hailed as Survivor Philippines' Celebrity Sole Survivor during the grand finale of the reality show which was held live at the Studio 7 of GMA Network Building in Quezon City on Friday.

Betong received 4 votes from the 7-member jury, thus winning the title and bringing home P3 million check from GMA-7 Chairman and CEO Felipe Gozon and President and COO Gilberto Duavit, Jr.

The Twitter world has extended their support to the show's finale, and congratulatory messages with term "Congrats Betong" and "#SurvivorPHFinale" became trending topics.

Vicki Belo and Hayden Kho break up? Nancy Castiglione, the third party?

Long-time lovers Vicki Belo and Hayden Kho, Jr. became hot topics on microblogging site Twitter on Friday, February 10. It started with a controversial tweet from the famous beauty surgeon:

"nancycastilogne (sic) you can now openly date @haydenjr . You have my blessings . Hope you'll both be happy ."

Minutes later, Hayden Kho, Jr. tweeted this:

"Before things go out of hand: Vicki and I are just having a misunderstanding. Don't make conclusions. There's NO infidelity issue here."

The couple has announced their engagement last June 2011, but haven't spilled out any information of their wedding plans.

It can also be recalled that Hayden Kho, Jr. had controversial sex videos with different women, the most popular back then, was with actress Katrina Halili. The sex scandals became nationwide hit and people were in great frenzy searching for the clips in the Internet.

According to some reports, Kho was allegedly seen kissing Nancy Castiglione at a bar in Timog.

The Filipino-Italian and mother of cute twin boys, Castiglione has not reacted yet as of this writing to this latest buzz about her and the couple.

Hayden appeals to 'hold judgment'

Kho tweeted following his above-pictured Twitter screen-grab, appealing to everyone to hold judgment. He said there has been a misunderstanding (between him and Belo) and it has gone out of proportion.

He added that the public does not need to get involved in the matter, and said names have to be cleared for the welfare of two innocent toddlers (referring to Castiglione's twins).

Kho also cleared out that he and fiance Belo are not fighting because of Castiglione. He said he has already apologized to the singer-model-actress for getting her named dragged into his "minor bump" of relationship with the doctor.

Kho insisted there there is no infidelity issue, and assured everyone that he and Belo "have been doing very well" in their relationship.

Aquino dares Corona to publicize dollar accounts

In the midst of the impeachment trial, President Benigno Aquino III on Friday challenged Chief Justice Renato Corona to show his alleged dollar accounts in Philippine Savings Bank (PSBank).

During TESDA's Specialista Technopreneurship Program in Taguig City, Aquino told reporters: "Public servant tayo 'no, may public trust na kasama doon. Maganda sana magboluntaryo na 'yung nasasakdal kung walang tinatago. Bakit? Buksan niyo para makita niyo wala akong tinatago."

It can be recalled that last Thursday, the Supreme Court en bacn voted 8-5, stopping the Senate impeachment court from scrutinizing the chief justice's foreign currency deposit accounts.

Aquino said the interest of 95 million Filipinos should have priority over those of the 31 impeachable officials of the country if ever the Corona’s case will serve as precedent to other impeachment cases.

The prosecution panel has accused Corona of owning and maintaining dollar accounts in PSBank, which are equivalent to P30 million.

"Ninety-five million ang Filipino, po. Dapat ho 'yung interes nung ninety-five million ay talagang nangingibabaw doon sa interes nung thirty-one na pwedeng ma-impeach. 'Yon ang mga palaisipin na bumabalot sa isip natin tungkol diyan sa dollar accounts na ito," he said.

Asked if he thinks the Foreign Currency Deposit Act should be reviewed, Aquino believed the law has no intention to give refuge to criminals.

"Wala naman sigurong intensyon itong batas na 'to na magre-refuge ang mga taong may, parang… those who committed an injustice should not find refuge in this particular law," he said.

"Pag ikaw ay magnanakaw — hindi ko sinasabing 'yung sa nasasakdal ay napatunayan nang nagnakaw — pero kung magnakaw ka nilagay mo sa isang foreign currency puwede mo ng itago sa pag-iimbestiga. Hindi naman siguro ganoon ang layunin ng mga nagsabatas nitong batas na ‘to," he added.

Naomi Watts to play Princess Diana in biopic

LONDON - British-Australian actress Naomi Watts will play Britain's Princess Diana in a movie about the late royal's final two years, filmmakers have announced.

Producers said "Caught in Flight" would focus on a period when Diana, the former wife of heir to the throne Prince Charles, found "true personal happiness" shortly before her death in a 1997 car crash in Paris.

Diana wed Charles in a glittering ceremony in 1981, but the unhappy marriage ended in 1996. Charles wed his long-time companion Camilla Parker-Bowles in 2005.

Watts, who won widespread critical acclaim for her role as Betty Elms in the 2001 psychological thriller "Mulholland Drive," said it was an honour to be able to play the "iconic role" of the woman known as the "People's Princess."

"Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen," said the 44-year-old, who also won an Oscar nomination for her role as a recovering drug addict in "21 Grams."

The movie about the Princess of Wales, who was just 36 when she died, will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, best known for his epic 2004 film "Downfall" about the final days of Hitler.

"I am delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana," said Hirschbiegel.

The film-makers did not confirm whether the biopic will feature Diana's relationship with Dodi Fayed, the son of Egyptian tycoon Mohamed Al-Fayed who was the princess's boyfriend and died with her in the crash.

Watts, who was born in Britain but emigrated to Australia in her teens, will start work on the Britain-based production later this year.

US actress Jessica Chastain, who starred in "The Tree of Life" with Brad Pitt, had originally been in talks to take the role.

Diana was played by Lesley Harcourt last year in a US television drama about the princess's son Prince William and his wife Catherine, while in the 2006 movie "The Queen" she was played by a French lookalike. - Reuters

2 killed in Alabang Town Center shooting

A security guard was killed while singlehandedly fighting off at least four suspected motorcycle-riding robbers near a mall in Muntinlupa City before noon Friday.

The guard sustained gunshot wounds in the back but managed to load his shotgun and fire back, killing one of them in the process, radio dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported.

Police said the incident occurred in front of a food outlet at the Alabang Town Center past 11 a.m.

Initial investigation showed the slain security guard, who was not immediately identified, was assigned to a money changer shop.

On the other hand, the slain suspect was described as wearing shorts and a polo shirt.

Police are now tracking the other suspects, who fled aboard motorcycles.

Lotto jackpot to hit P254 million

The jackpot for the Grand Lotto Saturday draw is expected to hit P254 million, after last Wednesday's 6-number combination was still not won.

Nobody got the luck of winning the number combination 26-48-21-40-9-13 last Wednesday, with a jackpot of P213 million. PCSO General Manager Jose Ferdinand Rojas II said that even though nobody won the jackpot prize, at least 36 lucky players won the second prize worth P150,000 each, after winning 5 from the six-digit combination.

Rojas said the ticket sales of the Grand Lotto have soared from P25 million average to P113 million in the last draw. It is the first time this year that the Grand Lotto prize has reached more than P250 million.

Two months ago, a carpenter from Las Piñas won the Grand Lotto jackpot worth P342 million!

But Grand Lotto recorded its all-time high jackpot of P741 million, which was won by a balikbayan from New York, who bought the ticket in Olongapo City last November 2010.

Somali pirates hijack Egypt-bound cargo ship with 21 Pinoys aboard

Greek-owned, Liberia-flagged bulker MV Free Goddess was hijacked on Tuesday (UTC) by the Somali pirates. The ship carries 21 Filipino crew members aboard, according to a report from Somalia Report.

The bulk carrier was taken along the Pinoy crew members underway in the Arabian Sea. Sources said the bulker was pirated by the Harardheere based pirate group under the leadership of Abdhulkadir Mohamed Afwenye, who has denied the allegations.

The hijacked ship was heading from Singapore to Egypt, and was carrying a cargo of steel cable.

The report also said that when they contacted Afwenye, he said his colleagues in Harardheere were innocent and gave a hint that the pirates in Garacad might have seized the ship.

MV Free Goddess is worth a shade over US$8 million and the owner is NASDAQ listed as Free Seas Inc.

It can be recalled that there have been numerous Somali pirates hijacking the ships that pass the Arabian Sea or Dead Sea (the only way to Europe), where a lot of Filipino crew members are aboard.

Santiago turns love guru for Aquino

The feisty Senator is now a love guru.

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago, known for her intelligence and wit, has an unsolicited love advice for President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III who stood as the Best Man in her wedding anniversary.

"According to the Dalai Lama, desire is the source of all misery and unhappiness in life. So if he is going to look for a mate, he might desire her, then he would become unhappy. I would have to consult the Dalai Lama," Santiago said.

Aquino has admitted dating Korean born, TV host Grace Lee, who seems to be liking the President's attention.

Lee, 28, even described Aquino, who just turned 52 in Feb. 8, as a “very sweet and very considerate” suitor.

While warning Aquino of the effects of "desire," Santiago said she only wants the best for Aquino. She noted she wants him to be happy if he chooses to settle down, to avoid a life of "misery."

“Of course we all want him to be happy, so I hope that he makes a good choice if he is choosing – at his age he should be choosing – his possible potential mate,” Santiago added.

“Unless he is resolved to be a bachelor forever, I will advise him that it is a life of complete misery. Everyone needs a partner in life, so let's wish him good luck in his search,” she said.

Aside from his love life, the senator also wished Aquino’s presidency well.

“I hope that the spirits of his parents, who did well for our country, will continue to guide him and that he will always be conscious of their high expectations – perhaps too high expectations – because it's so difficult to be a president,” Santiago said.

Philippines' richest man Sy eyes Ortigas land deal

The Philippines' richest man is in talks to take control of one of the country's main real estate firms, which has major parcels of undeveloped land in the nation's capital, his company said Thursday.

The SM Group of ethnic-Chinese tycoon Henry Sy confirmed it was eyeing a majority stake in the holding company that developed Ortigas business district, an important financial hub in Manila.

"We confirm that SM Group is in the process of discussion for the acquisition of majority interest in Ortigas Holdings Inc.," the company said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange.

"The amount and details of the transaction are still under discussion and subject to finalization."

The disclosure was issued after the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper reported that Sy was ready to acquire control of the Ortigas group for $1.0 billion.

The Ortigas group holds large parcels of land in the capital, which could be developed by Sy who was listed by Forbes business magazine last year as the richest man in the Philippines with a net worth of $7.2 billion.

By the end of this year, SM Group plans to have 46 major shopping malls in the Philippines and five in China. It also has interests in banking and residential properties. - AFP

The fourth installment of the "Bourne series", "The Bourne Legacy" has released its official movie poster and trailer. The movie stars Jeremy Renner (who took the role from Matt Damon, who was the original lead cast for the past three installments), Rachel Weisz, and Edward Norton.

"The Bourne Legacy" shoot about 40% of its scenes in the crowd-packed places in Metro Manila. The Universal Pictures-released film is slated to be shown in theaters August 3.

The Vampire Diaries stars Paul Wesley, Nina Dobrev, and Ian Somerhalder are sizzling hot by stripping off together in a magazine cover.

The three Entertainment Weekly covers feature the trio in various states of undress, with one distinctive photograph showing the them clad in red sheets, with Paul and Ian about to kiss Nina who is just wearing a black lacy bra.

Daniel Radcliffe implies he had one-night stands with groupies

Aside from the shocking revelation of being drunk while filming his Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe has implied he engaged in one-night stands with groupies, according to an article in Daily Mail.

The Potter star said he is nervous of sleeping with groupies because of the insipid pillow talk that usually follows afterwards.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, 22-year old Radcliffe revealed he prefers to know someone before hopping under the covers with them.

"I was always very nervous about the groupie thing. I like to like somebody before I sleep with them."

"You know, you're going to have to talk to them afterwards, even if it is a one-night stand."

"I have... I mean, that has happened, but generally speaking I've known the person. Apart from a few times when I was drinking."

Radcliffe has a girlfriend named Rosie Coker. He said he will have to make up for the times he will be away with Rosie for a couple of days to promote his latest movie "The Woman in Black" (check out the trailer here) and won't be back for Valentine's.

"I haven't seen her for weeks and I won't be back for Valentine's. I’ll be home a few days later, though, so I’ll have to make up for lost time."

"I've got three weeks off so we can be together – although I do plan to watch quite a bit of sport on TV."

Radcliffe also credited Rosie for being "very understanding" and "incredibly adaptable" and "far too good for me".

"The Woman In Black", which is based on Susan Hill's novel of the same name, follows a young widower and lawyer in 19th century London who is sent to a remote Yorkshire village to sort through a dead woman’s papers.

It is now showing in select theaters nationwide.

PS Bank asks SC to stop release of Corona's alleged documents

The Philippine Savings Bank (PS Bank) has asked the Supreme Court on Wednesday thru its president to stop the Senate impeachment court from ordering them to release the alleged dollar accounts of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

PS Bank president Pascual Garcia III said in a petition for temporary restraining order (TRO) that the release of Corona's alleged bank accounts will violate existing privacy laws concerning foreign currency accounts.

Garcia said that the subpoena that they received from the impeachment court, if granted, would cause loss of income on the part of the bank and create a chilling effect on the whole banking industry.

The "arbitrary and whimsical" move of the impeachment court may alarm foreign depositors, according to the petitioners.

Aside from the PS Bank, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) has also been asked by the impeachment court to present the alleged Corona documents.

The prosecution team says Corona have deposited US$700,000 in 2008 in PS Bank.

Adobe confirms: no Flash for Chrome on Android

Google issued a beta release of Chrome for Android earlier today. The browser provides support for modern Web standards and includes a number of compelling features that aren't available in the Android's default browser. One noteworthy Chrome desktop feature that isn't included in the mobile port, however, is the integrated Flash runtime.

Adobe has issued a statement confirming that Chrome for Android does not support Flash content. The company also indicated that it does not plan to work with Google to add Flash support to the new mobile browser. Adobe will, however, continue supporting Flash in the current default Android browser.

"Today Google introduced Chrome for Android Beta. As we announced last November, Adobe is no longer developing Flash Player for mobile browsers, and thus Chrome for Android Beta does not support Flash content," wrote Adobe's Flash Platform product manager Bill Howard.

Adobe struggled for years to make the Flash player plugin viable on mobile devices. Though it was able to make Flash work reasonably well on Android phones, results were mixed on other systems. Due to Apple's unwillingness to allow the Flash plugin on iOS and the difficulty that Adobe faced bringing the Flash player to new devices, the plugin never achieved the same ubiquity on phones that it has historically enjoyed on the desktop.

These setbacks caused Adobe to abandon its mobile Flash player strategy last year. The company announced that it would phase out development of its mobile Flash player plugin and not support it on new platforms. Adobe instead focused its mobile Flash efforts on developing tools for deploying Flash content as native mobile applications. It also strengthened its commitment to native Web standards and acknowledged HTML5 as the way forward for building rich mobile Web experiences.

When Google eventually moves to replace the default Android browser with Chrome in future versions of the Android platform, devices that run the operating system will likely no longer be able to play Flash content in the browser.
