We’re enjoying our gig as musical correspondents for Brink. The show’s producers tell us about an upcoming show topic, then we pen a little ditty that offers a humorous insight into the matter. This week’s show was about robots and artificial intelligence. The recent advancements in robot technology, including robots that can learn and interact, leads to the question: will lonely people replace human contact with robot relationships? We think so, and maybe it’ll look a little like our new song. For those of you who missed the TV debut of My Robot Girlfriend, we present it to you as good, old-fashioned web video:

Brink TV Appearance for My Robot Girlfriend

Tonight we’ll be making our second appearance on Brink. That’s at 10:30PM on the Science Channel. While we were in NYC last week, we actually stopped by the set and made a quick guest report. We had a little interaction with host Josh Zepps about our newest song, My Robot Girlfriend. The new song feature more animation from the crafty Canadian, Billy Reid. Check it out tonight!

The Sounds of NYC

We’re in NYC for a few days, for the Youtube 789 Gathering and a few other meetings. While we’re here, we’re going to be recording ourselves using the iPhone’s new voice memo feature. We thought we’d try this instead of vlogging…just to mix it up and provide you with a different experience. We’ll try to post a photo of where we’re at when we’re recording.

Here’s the catch: we’re posting these recordings ONLY over at the Kommunity. So, you need to head over there and join the fun if you haven’t already.

Deadly Football in Space

We’re excited that the Science Channel show, Brink, is referring to us as contributors (even if all we’re really doing is writing stupid songs for them). Today’s clip has proof of that, straight from the mouth of Brink host, Josh Zepps (Follow him on Twitter and tell him we sent you). Thanks to Brian Minor for getting this footage to us.

This video also includes our original idea for the ending of the Space Junk Song, which was for me (Rhett) to die after being nailed by a football. FYI, that football would be traveling at around 4 miles/second. As you’ll see from this behind-the-scenes video from our RhettandLink2 Channel (our channel devoted exclusively to behind-the-scenes videos), it wasn’t as easy to “die” as you might think.

Kommunity Broadcast @ 4:30pm Today

We’re happy with the way our Kommunity has launched. THANKS to all of you who have joined and interacted so far! (If you haven’t signed up, now is a great time to do that!) Our goal is foster as much fun over there as we can. And we think the best way to do that is to give you freedom to make the space your own.

With that in mind, we’re having a preliminary meeting and live broadcast this afternoon. Beginning around 4:30pm, we will be broadcasting for about an hour. You can watch and chat on our LIVE page.

In its simplest form, this broadcast is basically just a conference call with the Kommunity Moderators. (You’ll be able to see us and hear them.) But, instead of making it private, we decided to invite all of you to drop in and listen, if you want. But I’m giving you fair warning: this will be much more “business” than “internetainment.” So don’t show up in the chatroom and complain

[By limiting the audio discussion to the Moderators, we're not trying to exclude the rest of you from the process, it's just that we need to start somewhere to get the ball rolling, somewhere not too unwieldy... perhaps we'll have more of a Town Hall type meeting next time...?]

The goal of this Moderator discussion will be to brainstorm ways to foster even more Kommunity ownership by you, the members. We’ll probably start out by refining the roles for the Moderators and then we’ll brainstorm all types of ways to organize and improve the Kommunity. Who knows, perhaps ideas will formulate that will require volunteers (hint, hint). Anyways, consider yourself invited. (We’ll also record it and post the video afterward, barring any technical diffculties.)

For now, begin brainstorming any ideas you have for souping up the Kommunity. Post your questions/suggestions/ideas in the new Forum Discussion called “Kommunity Suggestion Box.” Have fun!

Space Junk Song Enters Youtube Orbit

After making its TV debut a couple of weeks ago on the Science Channel show, Brink, the Space Junk Song has officially launched into Youtube. Do your part to keep this thing in low-earth orbit for as long as possible by sharing it with your friends.

Thanks to Billy Reid for the animation. We could have never pulled this video off without him! We’re partnering with Billy for all our Brink spots. Check out Brink tonight on the Science Channel at 10:30PM (it’s normal time). And, look out for our all-new Robot Girlfriend Song next week (July 13th)!

The Fireworks Song is Back

Like a spent bottle rocket falling back to earth, the Freelance Fireworks Hall of Fame song has returned. Over the past few weeks, many of you have asked where it went. It was no mistake…we had plans to re-release the song this week, now that Youtube and other sites allow for much higher video and audio quality than was available when we first uploaded it. Now it’s back in higher quality than ever, just in time for the 4th.

Along with the release of the video, we’re announcing the limited edition Freelance Fireworks Hall of Fame T-shirt. Pick one up for the pyromaniac in your life. And, as always, the song is available for purchase from the music page (under Websongs, Vol 1).

Fayetteville Feed: Roughin’ it with Rhett & Link

James Johnson has a vision for bringing the vibrant arts scene around Fayetteville, NC to the web in a compelling way. Through the new online magazine, The Fayetteville Feed, he wants to capture the magic of print mags like Rolling Stone and repackage them for the web, keeping mainstays like front covers intact (as opposed to most online outlets that have settled for text and a few images). Rhett & Link on Brink

We’re excited to announce that we’ll be making an appearance (well, singing a song) on the Science Channel’s show, Brink. The half-hour show broadcasts tomorrow night (Thursday, June 25th) at 8PM. In case you didn’t know, it’s Space Week, and this week’s show will have a segment on space junk, which will include the world premiere of our brand new Space Junk Song. You can hear the instrumental version over at the Kommunity. This video will definitely be unlike anything you’ve seen from us, because it features some very tasteful animation from our good Canadian friend, Billy Reid.

So, even though we’re not bringing you the RhettandLinKast Live, you can still enjoy some all-new entertainment from us. Check your local listings, tell your friends and family, set your DVRs to record, and check it out! Brink’s normal broadcast slot is Mondays at 10:30PM, and we’ll be debuting two more science-themed music videos on the show this season. Now that we’re official troubadours for the show, we’re being considered “contributors”. We’ve always dreamed of being on a team of correspondents that included Winnie from The Wonder Years.
