Gonarezhou, The Place of Elephants

Yes, I know, the word "Gonarezhou" is quite a mouthful, seeming like just a bunch of letters scrambled together. So, to help you pronounce it, repeat after me: "Gonna-Re-Zhoo".

It means "place of elephants", and although we unfortunately can't promise dinosaur sightings, you can enjoy prehistoric-looking elephants, rhinos, and crocodiles instead! 

Southern Africa's Stripped Back Safari Star

Gonarezhou National Park is located in the southeast corner of Zimbabwe, bordering Mozambique, and is the country's second-largest national park. 

It's massive and absolutely wild. In fact, it's one of the most authentic safari experiences you get on our continent. If you want to really lose yourself in Mother Nature's untamed beauty with no restraints, then this is a dream come true for you. 

As it's so remote and rugged, we recommend a fly-in safari with a charter flight from Harare International Airport to a private airstrip near the national park. We don't recommend self-drives here, as you're really heading into the belly of the wild.

A Glimpse of Gonarezhou's Jurassic-Like Landscapes 

When I said this national park is reminiscent of prehistoric times, I meant it. There are very few places in the world with such a variety of untouched ecological spaces.

Picture impresive reddish and white sandstone cliffs, overlooking sweeping Serengeti-like grasslands dotted with giraffes, nyalas, impalas and other wildlife roaming free. Next moment, you're surrounded by woodlands, nyala berry trees, and winding rivers in between. 

There are more than 493 plant species, of which 333 are woody species, and 160 are herbaceous species. However, I can't help feeling there might be some species out there we are yet to discover... So, put on your best explorer hat for a Gonarezhou National Park safari! 

What Wildlife Can I See on a Gonarezhou National Park Safari?

When on a Gonarezhou National Park safari, you'll likely never encounter anyone else. It's just so vast and such an off-the-beaten-track destination that you'll feel like you have it all to yourself.

As the name suggests, you can see lots of elephants as it has a large population. And, yes, you can also see the rest of the Big 5, namely the lion, leopard, rhino, and African buffalo. 

On land, there are 89 large mammal and 61 small mammal species roaming free here. There are also 116 reptiles, 34 amphibians, and more than 50 fish species. 

It also makes sense that you can see some endangered species since this is such a unique setting. For example, the black rhino, African wild dog, lappet-faced vulture, and the near-endemic turquoise killifish are all found here. 

The Save River is a popular gathering place for wildlife, and we love that the water can look quite clear, so you can easily spot those species lurking beneath the surface!

What Inspires Travel?

It all begins with a spark of inspiration fuelled by an experience I seek or a discovery I wish to make. Going to a new place brings a tingle of anticipation and, sometimes, nervousness.

Next is the meticulous planning stage – a crucial aspect of any successful trip, a segue to the sweet stuff sandwiched between the third and fifth phases.

In the penultimate imprinting phase, my experiences fill my senses and seep into my soul before, finally, the most potent stage of my traveller journey – the reflection stage.

The Dream

Sometimes, my journey idea peters out before the dream can take root. Like an incomplete thought or an ellipses, they disappear into the ether. 

Possible reasons could include an overscheduled life – so every day in the modern age, incidental obstacles blockade my pathway to following my bliss. Could it be a lack of resources, such as time and money and the availability of the desired travel product, such as flights and accommodation? 

My plans may be stymied because my would-be travel companions cannot join me. Solo travel is on the rise in answer to a generation of travellers who answer a resounding "yes!" when the urge to go walkabout strikes. 

Following the irresistible drumbeat of wanderlust, I usually find a way to get out into the world and explore, even if it means delaying my trip. 

The Plan

The good news is that against these odds, travel dreams survive. I'm constantly gathering inspiration by consulting the latest travel trends, talking to friends, or on my social channels. 

Researching destinations, booking accommodations, and planning my route all play a crucial role in shaping the itinerary of my adventure. 

It's vital to understand the reason for my trip and allow the plans to fan out from there, like the far-reaching fingers of the Okavango Delta. Sidestepping the pitfall of cramming too much into my itinerary is a discipline I've grown into; needing a holiday from my holiday from my holiday does not speak to me. By tapping into the slow travel movement, I'm guided by the principles that foster deeper connections while travelling by taking the time to savour the experience.

The Trip

My favourite travel experiences include safari and wilderness escapes. The more far-flung, the better. I lose myself in nature, which is also ironically, where I find myself. Becoming a mother has tempered my choice of destinations. However, a family-friendly safari remains one of my top choices. The restorative power of Mother Nature is integral to my sense of balance and inner peace. There are few better ways to teach children about the interconnectedness of life than in the bushveld. 

I support community-led, responsible tourism products. Tourism, done well, can be a powerful force for good, an economic kickstarter with a relatively low barrier to entry since it's chiefly a service-driven industry. 

The Imprint

When my journey leans towards its end, I prepare to travel homeward. As the sun sets on my journey on the last day, I become introspective, allowing my experiences to settle within my soul and colour my dreams. 

Some of my best trips – even those with world-class infrastructure – have been hampered by travel delays, illness or a documentation dilemma. 

Being a good traveller means not sweating the small stuff, learning to think on your feet, and, most importantly, knowing how to ask for help and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, especially when things go awry. Nothing worth doing is ever easy. 

The Reflection

Sometimes, so keen to share the joy of my experience, I may post hurriedly on social media with a few snaps accompanied by a cobbled-together caution peppered with spelling errors as I stand in the check-in queue en route home.

Other times, I return to my life and don't take the memory card out of my camera for weeks, even months, deciding the gravity of the experience deserves time and dedication. Suddenly nostalgic, I remember a time before digital cameras when one film reel was all you had. Twenty-four potentially overexposed, blurry and potentially great shots to show for your trip. The agony of opening the back of the camera is a painful experience I do not wish on anyone.

A treasured gift, the pages are a rich mosaic of some of my most cherished travel experiences. We Like The Big 5, And We Cannot Lie

The Big 5 consists of the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and African buffalo, which are Africa's most famous large animals. There are many reasons why they made this short list, and experiencing the Big 5's sheer size and strength is something you'll always remember.

Each of these wildlife species have their own charms, which makes ticking all five off your list is such a treat! In Africa, there are certain locations that are best for viewing the Big 5, whether from land, water, or even sky! Where to See The Big 5 from Land 

The classic safari entails heading out in an open 4x4 game drive vehicle to look for wildlife. Most lodges offer twice-daily game drives, one in the early morning and another in the late afternoon, when wildlife is most active. You'll stop for a coffee or sundowner break, which is a highlight on its own! 

If you stay at certain luxury lodges, like those in private game reserves, you can also enjoy night game drives. This means you stay out after dark to see the nocturnal animals. This is a personal favourite of mine, as it feels like you're looking through the peephole of another world since few people see them as they hide under the cloak of night.

One of the most widely known Big 5 safari destinations in Africa and one of our most requested destinations is the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

But amidst these wild landscapes teeming with wondrous wildlife , you also get some of the best luxury lodges in the world. The Greater Kruger is home to many private concessions, where you can opt for a more private or even exclusive-use option.

Get Even Closer to The Ground on a Walking Safari

When staying in a private reserve, you also get to take part in special activities like walking safaris, where you take on the African bush on foot! Yes, just you and your hiking boots, following your guide in a single file as a whole new world opens up. These are my favourite safari memories, and I've done quite a few! It just never gets old as you notice all the tiny details and connections you might've missed otherwise. 

Furthermore, walking free through the bush makes you feel immensely powerful yet extremely vulnerable at the same time, a delightful juxtaposition of emotions.

Seeing The Big 5 from Water

There's something magical about silently gliding along water and meeting the eyes of wildlife lapping up the water from the riverbank. It moves you, just like the water does.

Botswana is by far our most popular water-based safari destination, home to both the Okavango Delta and Chobe River. I especially love going on a mokoro safari, a traditional canoe reminiscent of the gondolas in Venice. Because you're sitting lower than on a boat, you feel closer to the animals and can take truly spectacular photos!

1. Kruger National Park, South Africa

The Big 5 safari mecca of southern Africa, the Kruger National Park, sits at the top of nearly every African bucket list. Big game is plentiful here – and even the very elusive leopard makes regular appearances. 3. South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

This incredible wildlife sanctuary is known as one of the greatest globally, and upon visiting, it's very apparent why. South Luangwa is densely packed with wildlife, including over 400 bird species, offering the ultimate safari experience. However, it's most famous for being "the birthplace of the walking safari".

The dry season is the perfect time to visit South Luangwa. Animals congregate along the river and make sightings easy to predict. Therefore, June to September are the best months to take advantage of these conditions.

In past millennia the Etosha pan was an ancient inland sea. While it may no longer be an ocean, the summer rains result in a layer of algae forming across the pan's surface, attracting flocks of flamingos and numerous other bird species. Etosha's permanent water sources become crowded with competing wildlife during the dry season, making this the perfect time for game viewing.

5. Okavango Delta, Botswana

And you'll quickly see why the Okavango Delta is such a popular destination, with its endless floodplains, riverine woodland, lush forests and cloud-strewn sky reflecting on the serene channels.

We're also big fans of their iconic Time + Tide Sleepout experience, where you get the opportunity to sleep under the stars.

Time + Tide Luwi Bush Camp 

This eco-conscious camp is one of only a few camps not set next to the Luangwa River. Instead, Time + Tide Luwi Bush Camp is set further back, overlooking a permanent lagoon. This makes for a more private experience, with no other camps or roads nearby.

Giving you the classic safari look-and-feel, the five chalets are shaded by large mahogany trees, making it very serene. Walking safaris also reign supreme here, in particular lion and African wild dog tracking.

We also adore sundowners at the bar overlooking a hippo hide, where their grunts act as the backdrop of the stunning sunset.

Rebuilt in 2019, Chiawa Puku Ridge has a new chic canvas look. Its location on a small hill overlooking a dry flood plain and water hole, you can always expect lots of action in front of the camp. Its namesake, the puku antelope, is often spotted grazing in the area.

Focusing on walking safaris only makes sense, as this is the birthplace of this activity, and the photographic hide gives you a close vantage point of the big and small wildlife lured by the water.

As an eco-friendly camp in a quiet setting and with indoor and outdoor showers and tubs, rooftop "star beds" and private plunge pools, it invites you to spend as much time as possible appreciating nature.

This setting also lures fantastic feathery creatures, and it's one of the best places in South Luangwa National Park to see the beautiful carmine bee-eater bird (seasonal, usually around late August and early September). 

Children of all ages are welcome, there's one family safari room available, and family-friendly activities offered. Did we mention there's no WiFi or phone signal? This is your sign to get the family away from the screens and bonding in the bush!

We're also obsessed with the outdoor tub overlooking the river. It's a magical setting you'll reminisce about as soon as you leave.

There are only four chalets at Chindeni Bushcamp, which means you don't have to share! Book out the whole property to enjoy with friends or family, and you have yourself the ultimate safari adventure. 

However, please note that children must be 12 years and older to join a walking safari, and families with children younger than 11 years old will have to book out the camp or hire a private guide and vehicle at an additional cost.

Khwai Pre School

At first, the Khwai village did not have a pre-school. As a result, ABC partnered with Khwai Private Reserve and Naletsana Foundation to establish the Khwai Pre School to address low school attendance and poor education infrastructure. Together, they built additional ablution blocks, fixed the flooring, and furnished the school.

Furthermore, a continuous feeding program ensures that the kids receive a proper meal on school days, enhancing their concentration and academic performance. ABC aims to continue supporting the feeding programme and improving the school's infrastructure on an ongoing basis.

Kachikau Primary School Disability Unit

This school supports villages in Chobe by providing schooling, accommodation, and daily meals to students with disabilities. ABC invested in the school's infrastructure by building wheelchair ramps and paving walkways. This allowed for improved accessibility, health and safety, and an inclusive learning environment. 

The ultimate goal is to empower and equip students to graduate and further their education. Therefore, the next phase will include renovating the school hostel and providing additional development support.

Female Guides Program

ABC's Founder and CEO, Beks Ndlovu, started his career in the tourism industry as a guide, so he has a passion for the profession.

With over 90% of guides being men and less than 5% of women receiving support and training to pursue a career as a safari guide, ABC decided to address this gender inequality.

They aim to develop 25 female guides by 2025 through training and practical experience. Their two-year Female Guides Program includes theory, practical and mokoro training at African Guiding Academy. This gives them the skills to start as trainee guides at African Bush Camps. The program provides a foundation for females to become experts in the field (no pun intended).

Vuche Vuche Basket Weaving Project

This project employs women in local communities while simultaneously showcasing Botswana's heritage and culture. The beautiful weaved baskets are sold at African Bush Camps trading posts. And as a guest, you can also visit Vuche Vuche to learn how to weave baskets and experience Botswana's rich heritage.

2. Natural Selection

You make a tangible difference in the surrounding communities by staying at a Natural Selection property, with 1.5% of your stay supporting regional conservation and community outreach initiatives. Furthermore, you contribute an additional Conservation, Community and Reserve Fee that funds the protection of wildlife, habitat, supporting communities, and managing reserves and concessions.

Botswana has benefited from 61 conservation and community initiatives since 2016, including but not limited to the following:

• The Elephant Express provides safe transportation for school children and clinic patients in the Okavango Delta
• Supporting Grass Harvesters in Khwai with safe accommodation, food, and transport during the harvest season
• Maintaining mammal migrations in Botswana through informed land use planning
• Replacing and repairing solar water pumps to support migrating mammals in the Makgadikgadi National Park
• Protecting wildlife in Khwai Private Nature Reserve by equipping rangers with binoculars, handheld radios, motorbikes, and cameras

3. Wilderness Destinations

Wilderness Destinations' ultimate mission is to double the land they conserve today (6 million acres, or 2.3 million hectares) within the next decade by educating, empowering, and protecting.

Partnerships with Community-Based Tourism

In many rural communities, informal mining and subsistence farming degrades natural environments and, as a result, threatens wildlife. Wilderness Destinations has been partnering with communities and governments for four decades to foster relationships to operate its tourism camps in wildlife habitats.

As it stands, 46% of the land Wilderness Destinations is protecting belongs to community trusts. In effect, the communities are the landlords in which Wilderness Destinations operates. The partnership agreements benefit communities by means of revenue sharing.

Operating Luxury Lodges Sustainably

Wilderness Destinations created an internal set of stringent standards, Group Environmental Minimum Standards (GEMS), to proactively mitigate negative impacts on the natural environment while maximising positive impacts.

The GEMS is based on industry standards and 40 years of experience to guide current and future operations. To help protect the environment, every Wilderness Destinations camp is audited twice a year and has to comply with 85% of the requirements set in GEMS. So far, GEMS has been implemented in six out of seven countries where they operate, while most operate above GEMS standards.

Human-Lion Co-existence

Wilderness Destinations partners with CLAWS Conservancy (Communities Living Among Wildlife Sustainably) to protect lions and empower small cattle owners in the Okavango Delta.

Lions were being fatally poisoned in retaliation for the number of cattle they killed in rural communities. To address the issue, Wildness Destinations and CLAWS are limiting human interaction with lions, incentivising people to tolerate lions, and stimulating a conservation economy.

4. &Beyond

In everything they do, &Beyond’s biggest goal is to leave the world in a better place than we found it by focussing on caring for the land, people, and wildlife.

Care for The land

By partnering with New Southern Energy (NSE), &Beyond reduced its carbon footprint by introducing hybrid solar power plants at its generator-based lodges in Botswana. At its Xaranna Okavango Delta Camp, for example, it reduced generator run time by 19 hours per day and the camp's carbon footprint by 4,500,000kg per year. This was achieved by having a micro-grid controller that directs required power to the lodge while redirecting excess energy to a Tesla storage bank.

&Beyond endeavours to reduce all waste in Botswana. They saved 16 tons of single-user cardboard by collaborating with MackAir, using cool freight to transport perishables to the camps in the Okavango Delta. By reducing the need for cardboard packing, they also reduced the need for water removal trucks in this precious landscape.

Care of The People

One way &Beyond cares for the people is by benefitting them economically, investing in their education, and providing fresh water:

• In 2020, 89% of lodge operation expenses were sourced from local businesses by, for example, buying fresh fruit and vegetables from them, and in turn increasing the small businesses' income
• The village of Sexana now has a school with two classrooms, an ablution block, a kitchen and a dining hall
• Borehole projects provide stable water sources for remote communities in the Okavango Delta to overcome muddy water challenges during the dry season

Care for The Wildlife

In a grand effort to protect rhinos from being poached, six wild rhinos from &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve in South Africa were translocated to the Okavango Delta in 2013. The goal was to create new sources for the declining population. 

Fast-forward to the following year, when Rhinos Without Borders was established. The project is an aligned collaboration between &Beyond and Great Plains Conservation to ensure the survival of this beautiful species. By the end of 2019, 87 rhinos had been successfully relocated to safer havens.

How Hwange National Park Stuns

Hwange is a Big 5 safari destination and one of the largest elephant sanctuaries in the world, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to observe these magnificent creatures in the wild. But beyond the Big 5, the resident predators include cheetahs, hyenas, and a large African wild dog population.

However, from my personal experience, it's not always the wildlife species you see on safari that stand out. Sometimes, it's the dew glistening on the bush, the sip of Amarula liqueur coffee as the sun takes its first peek over the horizon, and the way you're welcomed warmly back to the lodge after a game drive. Hwange National Park delivers this and then some. It's a place you feel in your bones rather than just visiting.

Game Drives

Each game drive offers a unique experience as your expert guide and tracker venture into the various landscapes that make up the national park, including the Kalahari desert, acacia woodlands, teak forests, and grasslands. It's incredible to discover how the different habitats attract particular types of wildlife, which depend on them for food and shelter. 

Plus, did you know that you can take the whole family along, even the little ones? Some game lodges offer child-friendly programs to ensure everyone has a blast.

Walking Safari and Horseback Safari

Beyond the standard twice-daily game drives, Hwange National Park offers intimate walking and horseback safaris. Once again, you'll be led by experienced guides, but this time without the hum of the vehicle. Whether you choose your own two feet or the gentle gallop of a horse, you'll get a different look into what makes Hwange special.

This is by far my favourite way to experience the African bush. Stop to watch the tiny ant lion catch its prey, learn about the meaning of the animal spoor before stepping over it and breathe in the natural perfumes of various plants.

Bird-Watching

Hwange is a twitcher's paradise, with numerous bird species to identify and observe. Even as a novice, I loved spending moments in the quiet, learning about the unique characteristics while trying to spot them through the binoculars. I enjoyed marvelling at the interplay between the birds as they worked together to build a nest or competed for the same prey.

Victoria Falls Day Trip

You simply cannot visit Zimbabwe without seeing Victoria Falls in person! With about an hour's drive between Hwange and Victoria Falls, you can easily combine your safari with a visit to the famous "Smoke that Thunders". Speak to our Travel Experts to arrange this outing with your lodge. 

Bumbusi National Monument 

Take a step back into history by visiting the Bumbusi National Monument in Hwange National Park, where you can see the remains of colossal sandstone buildings from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

My Favourite Places to Stay in Hwange National Park

There are many accommodations in Hwange National Park; however, these are a few of my tried-and-tested favourites.

1. Somalisa Camp

Beyond the beautifully furnished tents, I fell in love with Somalisa Camp's expansive deck, where I spent lazy afternoons reading, only to be interrupted by an inquisitive elephant or two. 

Due to its prime position on the Kennedy Vlei floodplain, there's plenty to sit and stare at and many other wildlife vistors greeting you. It really feels immersive, with the surroundings being the hero instead of the camp itself. Although it's pretty spectacular in itself and eco-friendly too, with a fully solar power farm and water purity system that allows the camp to recycle 80% of its water used. These efforts have not gone unnoticed, as it has been awarded the first GOLD Green Tourism Certification in Zimbabwe.

Another favourite of mine is the copper bathtub and outdoor shower, as well as the star tent, where you can arrange for a sleepout under the stars.

Highlights

• Their Elephant Pool was named after its gentle giants frequent visitors 
• Intimate, accommodating a maximum of 14 guests at a time
• Sleepout experience can be arranged for an additional cost 

Who's it for?

Eco-warriors and travellers are looking for a hideout to bond with their nearest family and friends. Please note that children over the age of 12 years old are welcome but walking safaris are only for those older than 16 years old.

2. The Hide Safari Camp

The Hide Safari Camp is located in a private concession in Hwange National Park. It has everything you could need or want on your African safari, including an underground tunnel leading to a hide overlooking a popular waterhole! Its reputation as the "Best Tented Safari Camp in Zimbabwe" means you can rest assured you're in good (no, the best) hands.

From sunrise to sunset, the little moments stand out at The Hide Safari Camp, with a team magically making everything happen behind the scenes. This setting is especially great for wildlife photographers as you'll get unique angles from its namesake hide.

But you don't even have to leave your tent to admire the wildlife, as elephants and other species are known to gather at the water hole the camp overlooks.

• Underground deck-to-waterhole tunnel for excellent close-up game viewing 
• Located on a private concession for a more exclusive experience 
• Consistently awarded for its high standard in luxury safari accommodation and experiences 

Who's it for?

It's perfect for budding or pro wildlife photographers, safari enthusiasts, and romantic getaways like a honeymoon (in particular, their Dove's Nest sleepout experience).

3. Verney's Camp

I enjoyed the simplicity of this lodge, offering a very authentic safari experience without sacrificing quality and comfort. As it's located in a private concession, I loved being able to go out on night game drives to witness the nocturnal species.

The area is incredibly rich in wildlife, with migratory elephant, buffalo and antelope herds frequenting Verney's Pan, which in turn attracts predators, in particular a pack of African wild dogs and hers of lions. You can just imagine the action that ensues!

For families looking for an eco-friendly, immersive safari experience in a private concession, you can't go wrong with Verney's Camp.
