GO GREEN, Build A Solid Outdoors Clothes Line.

It’s taken us many years of moving and installing clothes lines, before we finally figured out the secrets of building and installing substantial clothes line post. We have helped a few friends do theirs as well. Here is what we have discovered along the way.

First check your deed restrictions if you live in a deed restricted community. Clothes lines were not very popular before the Green Movement, and some HOA, still views them as rather trashy.

Second, it takes substantial material, we prefer 4” steel pipe. Used pipe will be cheaper and if you don’t have a welder in the family, you may want to contract a professional welder. The main upright post will have to be notched to fit around the cross T for a solid weld. Once these are in the ground, they won’t be easy to repair if the weld breaks. Wood post just won’t last over time. We have tried a smaller size pipe and actually bent it at the ground level.

We weld a 5’ cross T out of 4” pipe on an 9’- 2” upright. This allows for 3’ in the ground and 6’-2” above the ground. For us, this is a perfect finished height for a comfortable reach and to keep long items off the ground, measure according to your needs. It is easier to drill the holes in the cross T before the welding process. A 3/8” hole spaced no less than 10” will allow for 6 lines. Drill the holes all the way through and be sure to keep them all in line. During this process decide if it is economical to have caps welded on the ends, or to later cut wood plugs to plug the ends of the cross T. You will want to plug these ends or birds will build nest, and then spend time on the clothes line dropping poop on your clean clothes. Paint the post, we like using a good metal primer, and then aluminum color paint as it seems to hold up longer. Any good outside enamel paint will work. If the pipe is used, it may need a power wire brushing.

Second the finished post will have to be set in substantial concrete at a depth of no less than 3’ deep. Just the tightening of the clothes lines themselves takes substantial stress on the post, not to mention a full load of clothes flapping in the wind. The side to side and back side of the hole is not as important as the front side, where the post will be pulled toward. We like to dig a hole at least 2’ wide 3’ deep. On the inside we like to dig a trench footing 2’ deep 12” wide out 3’ from the inside of each post. We drop the post center into the hole and add 6 rebar to both sides of the post out into the footing trench. The footing trench gives another underground leg to keep the post from pulling in towards each other. In setting the post we plumb it side to side but kick the post back about 1/8 bubble out of plumb. Even with all the concrete and footing the post will still pull in. Once it is all complete the post ends up being closer to actual plumb. Don’t skip on the concrete; it is very difficult to straighten up a post after the fact. Expect to pour 8-12 bags of concrete around each post. Keep the concrete about 3” from the surface so soil and grass can be planted to hide the trench. We like spacing the post right at 49’ or less. Most of the wire cable comes in 50’ or 100’ lengths. At 49’ this allows plenty of wire to connect to each post without having to splice. If you have a large family and need to have longer lines, consider placing a third post in the center. Also consider where the post will be placed, as they will be very permanent. It is not a good idea to place them under trees, or where birds will congregate. Think about where the tree branches might be in 15-30 years down the road. Also consider the wind patterns; you will want to be able to hang out pants so the wind blows them out like a wind sock for quick drying, sheets work best looped to two clothes lines.

Let the concrete set for at least 10 days. We like using galvanized stranded wire for the lines. It is available at almost any hardware store, Lowe’s, or Home Depot. Plastic coated lines just don’t hold up to the UV. Clean the lines with some vinegar water on a cloth before each use. We use ¼” eye bolts on each cross T, yes they work better in the 3/8” holes. Forget the turnbuckles; go to a good farm store, that sells electric fencing supplies, such as TSC, and Purchase the ratchet tightener used for electric wire fencing, you will need only one per line. We have found two types of these over the years, one has a nut on the side for a regular wrench, and the other needs a tool to tighten the ratchet. Obviously the tool will be needed for these and is usually sold next to the ratchets. Over time you will tighten these many times, much more than a few turns on a turnbuckle, so you will want to purchase the tool. The eye bolt on the ratchet side will have to be opened. Placing one side in a vise and using a pair of pliers to bend it to one side is sufficient enough to slide the ratchet housing into, and then bend the eye bolt back. On the other end, you can either wrap the wire around the eye bolt, or we prefer to use a cable sleeve and not leave the exposed ends of the stranded wire to be exposed. They tend to puncher hands during cleaning off the lines, these little strands really hurt. Be sure to use safety glasses as the wire can spring back quickly at eye level. Unroll the cable and not allow it to spool off the side of the roll, the cable will be nice and straight, less likely to kink. Fasten the fixed end and pull enough to make two complete rounds on the ratchet. Alternate from inside to out and back as you tighten the lines, if you tighten one side down first you will actually twist the post. The lines should have about a 1/2” pull down in the center once they are tightened to the correct tension. Over the first few weeks, they will need to be tightened further, again alternate the tightening.

We also like our all aluminum laundry basket cart to transport the laundry out to the clothes lines. It fits through a standard door, and is much easier on the back. We do carry these carts on our back-to-basics site, as well portable clothes lines and Amish folding clothes racks.

Good luck going green on this, it is a lot of work, but I can see the savings on the electric bill when we hang things outside.

Paul Stevens

Tom Brady wrote that the Providence School Board on Thursday will vote on a resolution to dismiss every teacher, effective the last day of school.

In an e-mail sent to all teachers and School Department staff, Brady said, “We are forced to take this precautionary action by the March 1 deadline given the dire budget outline for the 2011-2012 school year in which we are projecting a near $40 million deficit for the district,” Brady wrote. “Since the full extent of the potential cuts to the school budget have yet to be determined, issuing a dismissal letter to all teachers was necessary to give the mayor, the School Board and the district maximum flexibility to consider every cost savings option, including reductions in staff.”

School districts around the country are now having to make tough decisions, and this is just the beginning. The notices in Providence don’t necessarily mean everyone is getting fired, but the local government is keeping the door open in case they need to lay people off. But necessity will soon lead to real pink slips and tens of thousands of teachers (and other government employees) losing their jobs.

Union leaders, of course, are not taking the news very well:

“This is beyond insane,” Providence Teachers Union President Steve Smith said Tuesday night. “Let’s create the most chaos and the highest level of anxiety in a district where teachers are already under unbelievable stress. Now I know how the United States State Department felt on Dec. 7 , 1941.”

What’s beyond insane, Mr. Smith, is that our local, state and Federal governments have spent the time-energy-yield of multiple future generations in the form of credit and have yet to realize what the ramifications of such actions are and will be.

Simply put: We’re broke! There is no more money!

TWO MILLION people in government-funded jobs are going to lose them. There is simply no way out of this, save one, and that’s the printing of more money to bail out every level of government in the United States. It would take trillions of dollars of Fed generated cash infusion to even make a short-term dent. And we can be sure that any such bail out will be a short-term head fake at best. Though we don’t believe that such a bailout is likely, the Fed, Treasury and Obama administration has certainly taken unprecedented and foolish actions throughout this crisis, so it’s always a possibility.

While such actions, if taken, may “save jobs” and pensions for several months, the dollars printed to bail out the government bubble will lead to an even more severe and accelerated collapse trajectory than that which we’re already on.

It’s another Catch 22. Either government employees take the hit now and cut their wages, pensions and even lose their jobs, or, the band plays on until the whole system snaps without warning and sinks like the Titanic.

Author: Mac Slavo
Date: February 24th, 2011
Visit the Author's Website: http://www.SHTFplan.com/

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Rhode Island Forum at www.RhodeIslandPreppersNetwork.net

Rubbing Alcohol Heater

I was scanning through some YouTube videos and came across someone that put together a rubbing alcohol heater. The purpose of this was to have a portable, ready-to-go device in case you need emergency heat in a situation such as a vehicle breakdown in the middle of winter. I really questioned how well this “rubbing alcohol heater” would work – as well as how safe it could be in a vehicle.

I decided to make one myself.

Components of alcohol heater

Step #1:Gather the needed components – 70% rubbing alcohol, small paint can, paint can opener.

Step #2: Remove toilet paper from the roll and stuff it in the paint can. Continue to do this until the can is completely full.

Step #3: Now – fill the can with the 70% rubbing alcohol a little at a time until the toilet paper is totally saturated.

Step #4: At this point the top can be put it place and the unit can be stored. The can opener with a lighter can be taped to the outside of the can. To trial the heater – I went to Step 5.

Getting ready to light

Step #5: Light the top with a match or a lighter.

Heater has been lit......

As you can see – the heater has been lit. First problem I found was that it was very susceptible to wind. Using this outdoors could prove problematic with any decent wind present.

Protection from the wind is necessary.

Above I placed the heater inside my grill to protect it from the wind. The flame was much higher than it appears in the picture.

OK – so what was my impression?

First – I would not use it in a vehicle unless it was truly a do-or-die situation. There were little fumes – which is a benefit of using alcohol.

Second – I could feel minimal heat outside from it. Again – the premise of it was to be able to use it in a vehicle. In some form of enclosed space – possibly a small shed or lean to – the heat generated could prove beneficial.

Third – This is just flat out dangerous! With the original suggested purpose of usage in a car – this thing could easily tip over and spill. Would not make for a good day. Also – using this in a vehicle could certainly spell disaster to the roof.

Summary – It could save someones life if they were stranded on the side of the road in frigid temperatures. Beyond a desperate emergency – I would look to other ways to provide heat. For alternatives – see here, here and here.

Rourke
http://modernsurvivalonline.com/
PS – Due to my needing my vehicle – I never actually tried it inside a car.

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Rhode Island Forum at www.RhodeIslandPreppersNetwork.net

Survival Tool: The Flashlight

No doubt that when most preppers sit down and make a list of survival supplies to stock up on – a flashlight is one of the first things thought of.

I have made no secret that I have a serious flashlight fetish. I have flashlights scattered all of my house and in my cars. There is a flashlight in each of my kids rooms – and they all have batteries in them and work. The importance of a flashlight in an emergency cannot be overstated. Power out? So is your ability to see in the dark. If you are reading this blog – I do not have to go into detail why your should have several flashlights around.

If you are not familiar with LED technology in flashlights – let me enlighten you. LED flashlights have come along way in the past few years. Today – they are extremely bright, durable, and the batteries last much longer than common flashlights of the same brightness. The bulbs last nearly forever which is a big plus.

There are some very nice LED flashlights available at your local department store as well as from many of my sponsors.

LED flashlights should be purchased knowing how bright they are. Flashlight brightness is measured in lumen’s. A few years ago a LED flashlight was pretty good to be throwing out 8-10 lumen’s. Today’s high-tech LEDs can easily throw out over 100 lumen’s – and at pretty reasonable prices.

A few of my LED flashlights.

Here are a few choices available on Amazon – and possibly locally:

Rayovac 3 watt 80 Lumens - I own this one.

MAGLITE XL100 LED Flashlight, Black - about $35.00

Nu-Flare Ultrabright LED Aluminum Flashlight - - 210 Lumens!!!!

I am slowly but surely fading out “regular” flashlights and replacing them with LEDs. They are just far superior with the brightness and long battery life. In response to another recent post I did on flashlights – one reader mentioned about the vulnerability of LED lights to EMP. I had never considered this before. So – I did some research and here is what I have found:

No one knows for sure. Until the time comes that there is an actual EMP attack – opinions on the effects of a variety of electrical equipment including flashlights – are just that – opinions.

Small electronics such as AM/Fm radios and LED flashlights (both LED and regular) are not effected by EMP to a great level to to theirvery short conductors. EMP likes long wires such as power lines to capture the EMP.

LED flashlights will be dead after an EMP attack. There are those that state that pretty much any electronics will be toast. So – let’s hope there is no EMP attack.

Alright – enough about flashlights. If you do not have a bunch of them with extra batteries…….get them. Buy them cheap, buy them large, buy them small – but just buy them.

Oh yeah – don’t forget the extra batteries.

Rourke ModernSurvivalOnline

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Rhode Island Forum at www.RhodeIslandPreppersNetwork.net

We’re Going to Experience Apocalyptic Pain, and It’s Going to Be Out of Our Control

The US Treasury Department tells us that our federal debt is currently sitting at $13.8 trillion. On its most basic level the federal deficit is the difference between current government spending (including interest payments) and total current revenue from all types of taxes.

In 2001, when President George Bush took office, our debt was around $6.5 trillion. Combined with President Obama’s spending packages and commitments, our public and gross debt over the last 10 years has more than doubled.

But that’s not the scary part. What’s scary is how much money we owe when we look at current and future liabilities over the course of the next three decades. Officially, this figure is estimated to be around $150 trillion. Unofficially, according to Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff, our future liabilities exceed some $200 trillion. Considering that the tax revenue of the United States is around $4 trillion per year, anyone who’s ever held a balance and made a credit card payment can understand the near impossibility of paying off such a debt.

Senator Tom Coburn is one of many who warns of dire consequences if we can’t get our finances under control:

I think you’ll see a 15 to 18 percent unemployment rate . I think you will see an 8 to 9 percent decline in GDP. I think you’ll see the middle class just destroyed if we don’t do this. And the people that it will harm the most will be the poorest of the poor, because we’ll print money to try to debase our currency and get out of it and what you will see is hyperinflation.

If we don’t take some pain now, we’re going to experience apocalyptic pain, and it’s going to be out of our control. The idea should be that we control it.

We share Senator Coburn’s sentiment. Unfortunately, we’re not as optimistic as he is that any of Congress’ placations will be sufficient enough to help us get out of this hole.

With $4 trillion in annual tax revenue, at today’s debt levels it would literally take 50 years just to pay off the debt that we’ve already committed to - that’s if we stopped all additional spending right now - today. The odds of that are zero - thus our debt liability will continue to grow, as will the interest payments required to service our debt.

The end result of our pulling forward 25 - 50 years of debt is not going to be pretty. As we’ve outlined before, we are on the brink of a catastrophic collapse in the credit of the United States of America. This means that at some point our national credit card is going to be maxed out.

When that will be is difficult to predict. According to Senator Coburn, we’re looking at about 3 - 4 years - which sounds like a viable time line. Really, it all depends on China, because they are the largest buyer of US debt.

But the Chinese are not going to stand by while their US currency reserves become worthless. They are already taking action to counter the effects of a soon-to-be suicided US dollar.

We recently learned that the Chinese have signed agreements with the Russians to drop the dollar as a settlement vehicle, essentially replacing the world’s reserve currency with the Yuan when dealing with each other. We’ve heard many people suggest that this is just a drop in the bucket because of the widespread use of the US dollar - and we agree. However, China is working with other trade partners to do the same thing. And eventually all of those drops in the bucket will fill it up.

Once the Chinese pull the plug there will be only one entity left to support the US dollar - The Federal Reserve. They’ll digitally print trillions of dollars for as long as they can, but sooner rather than later the US dollar will collapse.

And when it does, the end result can only be described as an economic apocalypse.

If the dollar gets to the point it is equivalent to Monopoly money it will be impossible for holders of the bills, as well as our government, to settle transactions with the currency. This means that commerce on a global scale, for all of those expecting to fulfill transactions in US dollars, will come to a standstill.

How will individuals and governments buy food, gas, and other essential goods when the very currency being used to settle the transaction is no longer a viable trade instrument?

Really, it can get that bad. We have no confidence that Congress, the President, the Federal Reserve or US Treasury can fix this problem.

Over the course of the next decade we will see a new US monetary system introduced - just like we saw in 1971, 1944, 1913 and 1785.

This time it will be very disorderly. We can expect trillions in wealth to be wiped out and the many complications that come along with such an event - violence, protests, riots, breakdown in the rule of law and potentially even large-scale war.

If you haven’t done so already, take action to protect your wealth and preserve your well being now, before it hits the fan. Follow the investment strategies of the Chinese and you might have a chance of coming out with something when the chickens come home to roost.

Take possession of hard assets whenever you can, including precious metals, long-term food stores, tools & equipment, and anything else that will retain value when the US dollar loses it.

Author: Mac Slavo
Date: December 27th, 2010
Visit the Author's Website: http://www.SHTFplan.com/

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Rhode Island Forum at www.RhodeIslandPreppersNetwork.net

Terrorist may poison the cofood supply (but the food mpanies already have)

Always on the terror streak, the mainstream media is now warning Americans that terrorists may strike the food supply by dumping poison into restaurant salad bars and buffets, for example. CBS News broke the story, quoting anonymous "intelligence" sources who insist that terrorists might use ricin or cyanide to poison foods in salad bars.

I have news for CBS, the federal government, and the terrorists: If you really want to poison the U.S. food supply, just use aspartame. It causes neurological disorders and yet remains perfectly legal to dump into foods such as diet sodas and children's medicines. You don't even have to dump it into the food supply in secret, either: You can do it right out in full view of the public. Heck, you can even list this chemical right on the ingredients label!

Or get into the MSG business. MSG, which is often hidden on "natural" foods under an ingredient called yeast extract, is a potent neurotoxin that promotes obesity and even cancer, according to some experts. Feed people enough MSG and they'll probably die of cancer sooner or later, and that counts toward the goal of terrorism too, doesn't it?

If you really want to get nasty and up the body count, start a hot dog company and dump sodium nitrite into your processed meat like all the other hot dog companies do. Sodium nitrite promotes aggressive cancers -- even in children -- and yet the USDA and FDA allow its use in the food supply (http://www.naturalnews.com/007133.html).

Better yet, feed the population genetically modified corn and then wait for the mutations to kick in. GMOs might actually be called a biological weapon because they cause so much harm to humans and the environment. (http://www.naturalnews.com/GMO.html)

Why be a terrorist when you can do so much more damage as a processed food company?
If you're a terrorist looking to poison the U.S. food supply, get in line, buddy! The food companies have beat you to it!

In the U.S. food supply right now, you can find toxic mercury, BPA, acrylamides, petrochemicals, dangerous preservatives, synthetic chemicals like aspartame, pesticide residues and artificial colors that alter brain function. The FDA doesn't seem to care about any of this, of course: All these poisons in the food supply are legal!

So here's a message to Al-Qaeda and all the other terrorists trying to kill Americans: Don't bother with bombs and missiles... just get into the processed food business!

Or, heck, if you really want to kill Americans with poison, get into the cancer industry! The "Al-Qaeda Cancer Clinic" could really rack up some body bags by doing what all the other cancer clinics do: Inject patients with chemotherapy and watch them die (http://www.naturalnews.com/029996_c...).

Seriously, if you want to kill Americans, all you really need to do is keep supporting conventional medicine and the FDA with its do-nothing position on dangerous chemicals that threaten the health of Americans right now. FDA-approved drugs kill well over 100,000 Americans each year -- a statistic that dwarfs the body count of any terrorist group.

Come to think of it, how do we know the FDA isn't already being run by terrorists? Their actions, which blatantly endanger American lives, are entirely consistent with the aims of a terrorist organization. (http://www.naturalnews.com/001894.html)

By the way, this is all depicted in a CounterThink cartoon I created in 2006 called The Food Terrorists: http://www.counterthink.com/The_Foo...

This cartoon anticipated today's terror news alerts by four years. That's because when it comes to the U.S. government's rhetoric on terrorism, it's not that difficult to see where they're taking it.

Want to know what the next four years will bring us? I'll soon be publishing a list of predictions for 2011 and beyond. Watch NaturalNews.com for that announcement.

In the mean time, you might want to steer clear of FDA-approved foods and drugs, because you just never know what's really in them.

Wednesday, December 22, 2010
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
Editor of NaturalNews.com

Sources for this story include:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010...

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Rhode Island Forum at www.RhodeIslandPreppersNetwork.net

Sing the health praises of parsley and sage

Those of us who go back a few years likely remember the line about parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme in the huge Simon and Garfunkel hit song about two ill-fated lovers, "Are You Going to Scarborough Fair". Many have speculated that the reference to the four popular herbs was due to their use in Medieval Europe to help cleanse the air and ward off the infamous black plague. Others have thought that the reference to the four herbs was because the combination may have been used as a love potion. Whatever the reason for their inclusion in the popular song, the many health benefits of parsley and sage are worth loving and singing praises about in their own rights.

PARSLEY

Parsley is an amazing medicinal herb with a world of health benefits. The root contains calcium, B-complex vitamins, and iron, which nourish the glands that help regulate the uptake of calcium. It is a source of magnesium, calcium, potassium, vitamin A, beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin K.

Among the many benefits reported for parsley are:

*It is a diuretic which helps the body produce more urine to keep the urinary system operating smoothly and which helps prevent problems such as kidney stones and bladder infections.

*It is wonderful for removing toxins from the body, such as heavy metals.

*It is an effective breath freshener. It is believed that the practice of including parsley on a dinner plate began due to its breath freshening abilities and not merely for its decorative effect.

*The root and leaves are good for the liver and spleen.

*It helps relieve bloating during menstruation.

*It provides relief for edema, often helping when other remedies have failed

*Parsley root and seeds help relax stiff joints, often making stiff and unmanageable fingers work again.

*It helps remove gallstones when used properly by taking a pint of the tea daily.

*It is beneficial for the adrenal glands.

*It is a powerful therapeutic aid for the optic nerves, brain and sympathetic nervous system.

*Parsley juice is an excellent tonic for the blood vessels.

Note: It is best to avoid large amounts of parsley if you are pregnant, especially the use of the volatile essential oil.

SAGE

Like rosemary, its sister herb in the mint (Labiatae) family, sage contains a variety of volatile oils, flavonoids and phenolic acids, including rosmarinic acid. The oils found in sage are both antiseptic and antibiotic, helping it fight infections.

Besides the antioxidant and other properties shared with Rosemary, sage`s other health benefits include:

*It is effective for symptoms of menopause, night sweats and hot flashes because of its estrogenic action and because its tannins help dry up perspiration.

*Sage helps provide better brain function and has been used in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease for over a thousand years. It helps provide better recall and research has suggested that it may be an effective option to help treat Alzheimer`s.

*There`s also compelling evidence that sage may be of value to people with diabetes for whom the hormone insulin does not work as efficiently as it should. Lab studies indicate that sage may boost insulin`s action.

* The ability of sage to protect oils from oxidation has also led some companies to experiment with sage as a natural antioxidant additive for cooking oils that can extend shelf life and help avoid rancidity.

In an upcoming article, we will also sing the praises of the other two herbs mentioned in the popular song - rosemary and thyme.

Sources included:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarbo...
http://www.healthy-holistic-living....
http://www.greenmuze.com/blogs/natu...
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/pars...

About the author
Tony Isaacs, is a natural health author, advocate and researcher who hosts The Best Years in Life website for baby boomers and others wishing to avoid prescription drugs and mainstream managed illness and live longer, healthier and happier lives naturally. Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!” (Rev. 6:5-6)

In answer to a recent question, I made the comment that early signs of the coming Seal Judgments are beginning to appear. This does not mean I believe we're in the beginning of Daniel's 70th week. It means I can see signs that it's not far off, which means the rapture of the Church is even closer.

Although I believe the Seal judgments will be sequential, I don't think the signs of their coming will necessarily be in order. Some have different run-up periods than others. For example, we know the first seal says that a man will suddenly appear on the world scene. He'll seem to be a peace maker but his real agenda will be to conquer the world. He's the rider on the white horse. After him a rider on a red horse will appear, and war will soon follow as the true intent of the man on the white horse is revealed. These two judgments indicate that a man appears and quickly leads the world from a perception of peace to the reality of war. His rise to power has certainly been underway for some time even though no one knows who he is yet. But once his time comes, he'll quickly have the whole world behind him. The point is, for the most part the run up to the first two seals is invisible.

The third seal judgment, also known as the Black Horse, is different in that the run-up is visible and can be tracked. The rider on the black horse holds a pair of scales with which to measure the comparative value of money and food. Changes in the relationship between the two can be tracked, allowing us to make a good guess as to how close we're getting. This relationship is the topic of our study today.

Food Inflation
Recently financial experts have warned about the likelihood of runaway inflation as a result of the of the US government's increasing debt. This will make the dollar worth less and less which means the things people buy will cost more and more by comparison. The most noticeable early signs are in commodities such as food, partly because the effects of inflation have been compounded by shortages.

The World Bank says, "World food price volatility remains significant and in some countries, the volatility is adding to already higher local food prices." As examples, world wheat and corn prices have risen 57%, rice 45% and sugar 55% over the last six months and soybeans are at their highest price for 16 months. Some experts are saying we're only one crop failure away from having out of control shortages in many parts of the world. The World Bank concluded it's report by saying the world should expect this kind of volatility in food prices for the next 5 years.

The National Inflation Association, or NIA, (www.inflation.us) tracks real world changes in inflation. They say the government's Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures would have you believe that food inflation is at the slowest pace on record. But every food shopper knows this is not true. The NIA claims that when calculating food inflation, the government uses something called geometric weighting, which gives a lower weighting to goods that are rising in price and a higher weighting to goods that are falling in price. If the price of steak is rising while the price of hamburgers is falling, the CPI will give a lower weighting to steak and a higher weighting to hamburgers. The government justifies this by saying that rising steak prices mean Americans are more likely to eat hamburgers. As a result of this weighting, the CPI no longer measures what it would cost to maintain the same standard of living as in the past. It's now based on the realization that America's standard of living has been in decline and the expectation that it will continue to decline in the future.

Dollar Inflation
The NIA also says there's a misconception in America that wages have risen at the same rate as price inflation, when this is simply not the case. The median household income in the U.S. was $11,800 in 1975 and today is $49,777. If you go by the government's CPI, $11,800 in 1975 dollars equals $47,208 in today's dollars. That would seem to indicate that Americans are earning slightly higher real incomes today than 35 years ago. However, the truth is, once you discount the effects of geometric weighting, the median household income in 1975 of $11,800 actually equals $154,000 in today's dollars. This explains how in 1975, a father was able to support a family on just one income and college students were able to afford their own tuition with just a summer job. Today, in many cases both parents need to work to support their family, and students need to go deeply into debt to fund their education.

As for the elderly, NIA calculates that because of the way the CPI has understated the real rate of price inflation, Americans on Social Security should be receiving payments that are more than double what they receive today. Unfortunately, the government just announced last month that Americans on Social Security will receive no payment increase in 2011, despite the fact that food inflation will likely become the biggest crisis of the year, much larger than the mortgage crisis we have today.

On a related note, analysts have said it's no longer a question of if but when and how much money the Fed will pump into the system in an effort to stabilize the economy. Some say as much as $2 trillion will eventually be needed. There are no assets backing this money. It will come straight out of thin air. As you read this, the Fed has begun an initial purchase of government debt totaling $600 billion. We'll be able to track the effects on the value of the dollar by measuring rising prices.

Food Riots And Tax Rebellions
Back in the fall of 2008, I posted a summary of comments by Gerald Celente, CEO of Trends Research Institute. He's renowned the world over for his accuracy in predicting future world and economic events. He accurately predicted the 1987 stock market crash, the fall of the Soviet Union, the 1997 Asian currency collapse, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, and one year before the fact predicted what he said would become known as the Panic of 2008, saying that giants would tumble to their deaths, which is what we've just seen in the fall of several of our oldest and biggest financial firms, and with the big three auto makers teetering on the brink. (You can check his track record for yourself at www.trendsresearch.com.

At that time Celente was forecasting food riots and tax rebellions in America - all within four years, cautioning that putting food on the table will be a more pressing concern than buying Christmas gifts by 2012.

"We're going to see the end of the retail Christmas. We're going to see a fundamental shift take place. Putting food on the table is going to be more important that putting gifts under the Christmas tree," said Celente, adding that the situation would be "worse than the great depression".

"America's going to go through a transition the likes of which no one is prepared for," he said at the time, noting that people's refusal to acknowledge that America was even in a recession in 2008 highlighted how big a problem denial is in being ready for the true scale of the crisis.

While they were pretty astonishing at the time, two years later it seems much more likely that they'll turn out to be true.

I'm not saying that Celente is a prophet, or even that his predictions confirm what the Bible says. But current conditions point to continuing increases in food prices and because of our government's economic strategy some experts say the possibility of run away inflation can not be ignored.

The conditions described in Rev. 6:5-6 are infinitely worse than anything we've ever seen, and even worse than Celente's predictions. It will take all of an average worker's pay for one day's work to buy enough food just for the day. Conditions are no where near that bad now. But unless some drastic changes take place, that's where we're heading and getting there by 2012 is well within the realm of possibility.

In Summary
My purpose in offering this commentary is not to provide a comprehensive treatment of Rev. 6:1-8, also known as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, but to use current money and food conditions to demonstrate how the Black Horse judgment will materialize.

And remember, the Black Horse is the third in the series and follows the outbreak of war over 25% of the world (Rev. 6:8). War is known to disrupt food supplies in affected regions. Add this disruption to world wide food supplies that are already strained and a monetary system that's been robbed of its value and you can see how it would take everything a person earns just to feed himself.

The fact that this judgment follows the rapture does not mean we can relax and pretend nothing's wrong. Even if this new congress follows through on its promises, it will take several years just to stabilize America's debt problem and in the mean time the government will need to borrow even more just to meet the commitments it has already made. This is bad news for the whole world, and it's not at all certain that the problem can ever be solved. America may already have done to itself what no outside enemy could accomplish and brought about its own defeat.

I believe the rapture of the Church is very near and could literally happen any day. But each day the Lord tarries will be a day of increasing uncertainty, especially for the unemployed and under employed. This is not a time for hoarding or investing in the future. We who have excess should be more diligent than ever in seeking out and helping those who are unable to help themselves.

And above all, we must have hope, for the Lord has promised to come for us. It was He who said, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:10-11, 28). You can almost hear the footsteps of the Messiah.

http://www.raptureready.com/featured/ke ... ck146.html

To post a reply follow the link below:
http://www.americanpreppersnetwork.net/viewtopic.php?f=155&t=5976&sid=f2432

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Rhode Island Forum at www.RhodeIslandPreppersNetwork.net

This is not tightning your belt

Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Some politicians and a very few lost Americans with nothing better to do feel it necessary to change the name omitting the word plantation. Get a life. Race would be a greatly fading issue if not for the ones believing they are doing something great, when they are only stirring the sht pot. I sometimes believe it is these people who are the most pregadise, reviving a fading issue at any opportunity. Maybe when someone sees the word plantation they think slavery. Big deal, it is a part of our history and a part that should be remembered. When I hear the word plantation I see crops, orchards, fruit trees, etc. Leave it alone. In changing the name, imagine the costs, signs, letterheads, etc. Here's an Idea for you politicians, how about taking that time you're spending changing the states name and use it to get your people back to work. I'm sure its not as easy as changing a name but the effort would be much more appreciated. If there should be a name change it should be to change the name politician to ????

To reply to this post follow the link below:
http://www.americanpreppersnetwork.net/viewtopic.php?f=624&t=5114

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Rhode Island Forum at www.RhodeIslandPreppersNetwork.net

How To Join The Rhode Island Preppers Network

Come learn survival, preparedness and sustainable living with us!

The Preppers networks are all about volunteering our knowledge and skills with each other. However, a kerosene lantern with a 1-inch wick will burn approximately 45 hours per quart of kerosene, saving lots of natural resources and utilizing approximately one-fourth as much fuel as a gas lantern. Kerosene lanterns are an effective and fairly safe lighting source. There are now scented lamp oils which replace kerosene. This lamp oil is generally available in retail stores. Make sure the oil is approved for use in your lamp

**Caution: Lanterns consume good air and exhaust bad air, so use only when well ventilated.**

There is a difference in lighting quantity and quality, as the kerosene lantern is quite dim when compared to the two-mantle gas lantern. The light output of a kerosene lantern is comparable to a 40W-60W light bulb.

As a rule of thumb, the typical kerosene lantern burns approximately 1 ounce of fuel per hour. Burning at the rate of 5 hours each day, the following approximate amounts of kerosene would be used:

Kerosene Lantern Fuel Consumption:

Day 1/2 pint of fuel

Week 2 quarts of fuel

Month 2 gallons of fuel

Year 25 gallons of fuel

Republished with permission from: Making the Best of Basics. Rain can hurt yours and other drivers visibility quite a bit. Rain at night can be even worse because it becomes harder to see the yellow lines in the road. The rain keeps them from being as reflective so it can be hazardous while driving in the rain at night. Part of your vehicle maintenance is making sure your windshield wipers are in good working condition. This is something you should check on a monthly basis, and replace when they become worn. You can take this even further and dramatically increase your visibility with one easy step.

Rain-X is a great way to keep your windshield clear during rain and also assist your windshield wipers. When water hits a Rain-X treated windshield it will bead right off. Rain-X works best when moving at higher speeds. Usually above 50 mph. That way the wind can help bead the rain right off. If it's not raining too hard you can drive without using your windshield wipers and see perfectly fine. Rain-X is something that I always keep on my windshield because it dramatically increases your visibility in a rainy situation.

Rain-X comes in a lot of different forms and I have found that the best way to use it is to apply the Rain-X wax. It comes in a squirt bottle and you apply it the same way you apply wax to the paint of your car. Use a foam or cloth applicator and put a good coat on the windshield. Wait a few minutes and allow the Rain-X to dry to a haze. Once dried take a clean cloth and buff until all the Rain-X is removed. This also helps keep bugs from sticking when they hit your windshield at night. A lot of them will just slide off instead of bursting and covering the windshield.

As cheap as it is it's a no brainer that you need to keep a good coat on your windshield. One good coat of the Rain-X wax will last you about a month, depending on how much rain you are driving in. There are a lot of other great Rain-X products including wipes and other types of application. Whichever you choose make sure your windshield is treated and you will thank yourself when the next rain comes.

*Note: You can also put a coat of regular car wax on the windshield and it will work almost as good as Rain-X.

Getting Your Body Prepared

Re-post courtesy of MatthiasJ from Kentucky Preppers Network

One of the important aspects of being a prepper is preparing for your future. This does include your food storage and other preparedness items. It also includes your health. Staying healthy and in shape will increase your quality of life, and your life span. Most Americans get little to no exercise. This is probably why America has the largest number of obese people than any country in the world. Also due to the poor diet of most Americans.

I know it's hard to eat the best diet due to our fast and busy lives but by just cutting out fast foods and sugary snacks you're going to do yourself a lot of good. And by getting 20-30 minutes of physical exercise each day you're going to improve your health and overall well being. Low stress exercises like walking or riding a bicycle are a great ways to get in your daily physical activity and burn a few pounds.

Physical exercise is also a great way to relive stress. Most of us work all day couped up in an office somewhere and don't get the outdoors time we need. Going for a walk or jog after a long day at work will make you feel 10 times better and make you forget about all the problems from work. Getting out and exercising will allow you to get your daily dose of Vitamin D; which is critical to a healthy body and healthy immune system. If you spend 15-20 minutes outdoors in direct sunlight each day your body will produce all the Vitamin D it needs.

Getting exercise will also benefit you if you are in a situation that you have to put your survival skills to the test. If you have to hike home with your get home bag you will be happy you spent 30 minutes each afternoon exercising. Getting daily exercise makes you feel better overall. You get a chance to get out of the house and away from the television or computer. Try it out for a week. Let me know if your overall attitude improves and you feel a lot better.

Water Storage Options

Re-post courtesy of MatthiasJ from Kentucky Preppers Network

There are a lot of options out there when trying to decide how to store your water. Regardless of the method you choose, water is extremely important and your water storage needs to match your food storage. Your method of water storage will depend on your living arrangements, and should be tailored to your location and housing situation.

First there is the water barrel. Available in sizes from 15 - 55 gallons, these are pretty easy to store and are very versatile. *Note: One thing to consider is that water weighs almost 8.5 pounds per gallon. A 55 gallon drum filled would weigh over 450 pounds. Make sure they're supported on a sturdy surface. The best thing to do is get the barrels used. Syrup at cola bottling plants come in these containers, as well as other food related liquids. You can get these for free sometimes if you talk to the right person, they usually throw them out. If you can't find free ones my local Rural King sells them used for $12. Check locally but if all else fails you can always order offline.

If you get creative you can find places around the house to hind them in plain sight. One of these in the living room with a piece of plywood on top (cut in a circle) with a sheet draped over it would look like a regular table. On the Preparedness Pro Facebook Page there is a photo posted of using them to create a bed with wood on top of the barrels then the mattress and sheets. I've also heard of people using them for a computer desk. It would make them easy to get to if they were in the living room or bedroom. Just make sure you have a good hand pump to get the water out.

There is a company that makes a product called the Water Bob. It is a large plastic bag designed to fit in a bathtub. The bag is made of strong, and safe plastic with a hole to fill it with. The idea is that in the event of an emergency, you put it in the bathtub and can fill it with up to 100 gallons of water. This is a great product, and for the price it's great to have in the closet. They fold down into a small box to there's no problem storing them. The only problem is see is if you wake up with no water at all then you can't fill them up. This would be great to have along with your existing water storage just to give you a few extra gallons in the event you might need it.

At most Wal-Mart's you can purchase these 7 gallon Reliance water containers. They're blue containers that come with a pour spout and a convenient carrying handle. They usually run around $12 each and I have quite a few of these full of water. They are great quality and are a great way to store water in small amounts. Even if you have all your water in 55 gallon barrels you can keep a few of these to transport water. They will sit on a table and you can use the included spout to pour water with ease.

I talked about this in my post about "Free Water Storage" but I will mention it again. If you drink a lot of juice (and you should) then you're going to end up with a lot of empty jugs. Juice bottles are perfect because they are easy to clean, just wash and fill with tap water. These will store for years and is a great way to add just that much more water to your water storage without costing you any additional money.

One thing to also remember is that your hot water heater is essentially a tank full of water. In an emergency this can also be tapped into for drinking and cooking. Most hot water heaters have a valve and nozzle at the bottom for draining. It would be a good idea to have an attachment with a hose on hand so you could dispense the water without risking a spill.

There are also larger water storage solutions available if you have the space. You can get containers from 100 to 300 gallons or more. If you have a barn, or garage with the space this might not be a bad idea. Just make sure you have a way to transport the water into your house for use.

There are probably a few things I missed but this should give you an idea on how to store your water. Water is more important than having food. You can go 3 weeks without food but won't last 3 days without water.

Cooking with Ramen Noodles

Re-post courtesy of MatthiasJ from Kentucky Preppers Network

Ramen noodles is one of the best and most versatile survival foods you can have. Mainly because they are cheap, quick, and easy to prepare. There are lots of different types of Ramen; from chicken, to shrimp, and beef flavored. I personally like Ramen noodles and eat them often. They don't have a lot of nutritional value but will fill your belly and keep you going.

The great thing about Ramen is the fact that it is so versatile. You can mix just about anything in with Ramen noodles and create a delicious dish. In my food storage I keep Ramen noodles as the base for any noodle dish. Ramen can also be added to other dishes that require noodles. They cook very fast (around 3 min) which is usually a lot faster than other noodles on the market. If you just use the noodles and not the spice packets, you can save those for a later dish. No need to waste.

Ramen noodles are great with spaghetti sauce. I keep Ramen and spaghetti sauce in my food storage for making a quick spaghetti dish. You can also add Ramen to chili, I like noodles with my chili and Ramen goes great with it. You can also add any "cream of" soups to Ramen with some spices and have a nice filling soup. There are endless combinations of cooking with Ramen. It's a great addition to your food storage, and will take the place of most other noodles in any dish. Toni Patrick has a book called 101 Things to do with Ramen Noodles.
