Rhodes (Rhodos or Rodos in Greek), lies between Crete and the near East in the Aegean ocean. Rhodes is famous as the island of sun, sea and sand, the ideal place for vacations. It is the third largest Greek island, the biggest of the Dodecanese islands, and officially, the sunniest place in the Europe. The City is among the finest, not only in Greece but in the whole of the Mediterranean.

There are many reasons why Rhodes is one of the most popular resorts in the Mediterranean: the natural surroundings (crystal clear seas, many parks and recreational facilities), the bright sun and the warm hospitality of the islanders themselves. Virgin - from the second pressing.

Pure - undergoes some processing, such as filtering and refining.

Extra light - undergoes considerable processing and only retains a very mild olive flavour.

When buying olive oil you will want to obtain a high quality EXTRA VIRGIN oil. The oil that comes from the first "pressing" of the olive, is extracted without using heat (a cold press) or chemicals, and has no "off" flavors is awarded "extra virgin" status. The less the olive oil is handled, the closer to its natural state, the better the oil. If the olive oil meets all the criteria, it can be designated as "extra virgin".

What is pure and light olive oil? "Pure" olive oil is made by adding a little extra virgin olive oil to refined olive oil. It is a lesser grade oil that is also labeled as just "olive oil" in the U.S.

"Light" olive oil is a marketing concept and not a classification of olive oil grades. It is completely unregulated by any certification organizations and therefore has no real precedent to what its content should be. Sometimes, the olive oil is cut with other vegetable oils.

Greece produces more than 430,000 tons of olive oil annually, and more than 75% of that is Extra virgin olive oil, which is the best type of olive oil.

The Greek roasted red peppers are of exceptional quality and are mainly produced in Macedonia, in the northern part of Greece.

In Greece, one can find peppers for stuffing, for frying, for pickling and for drying.

The most famous of all Greek red peppers are the 'Florina Peppers', which are long, flat, sweet and bright red peppers.

Greeks use to roast them with olive oil, garlic, parsley and a touch of vinegar.

The Greek Pepperoncini is one of the best in world level.

A true gift of Nature these spicy, crunchy peppers are perfect whole as part of antipasto platter or sliced as salad toppers.

They are great sliced into cold rice or pasta dishes.

Pepperoncini is exported throughout the world as it comprises a special and most sought after Greek product.

Masticha is an agricultural product removed by chipping mastic bushes. The product in raw form is available in different grades, 1 to 5, and in different sizes, large tears and small tears. The grades define the purity of the product. Grade 1 is the most pure mastic suitable for humans to eat, grade 3 to 5 is suitable for all other uses and may contain different tear sizes and small tree remains.

Masticha looks like rock candy and has a distinctive taste and chewiness. It is a 100% Greek product, and as such is registered by the European Union as PDO (PGI) name. It is only produced on the island of Chios, in the Aegean Sea, and especially in the Southern part in the Mastic villages or the so called 'Mastichohoria'. Even though people tried to take mastic to different countries in the past, amazingly enough mastic is impossible to grow in any other part of the world except Chios.

Chios Mastic, popular since ancient times, was and still is a highly commercialized product due to its cosmetic, pharmaceutical and industrial applications. During the Ottoman Empire the Sultan used to give the mastic to his harems for fresh breath and white teeth. During the 1960's it was exported to Germany to be used in the shoeshine industry.

Today it is proven that mastic has therapeutic uses to lower cholesterol, prevent ulcers and ease blood pressure. Mastic is also used for Greek delicacies (ipovrixio), ice cream (kaimaki), drinks, baked goods, chewing gum, cosmetics such as toothpaste, lotions for the hair and skin and perfumes.

The best period for harvesting is July and August. After the mastic is collected it is spread out to dry while it is washed manually.

Greek red saffron or 'Krokos Kozanis', a pure product of the Greek land, is considered to be one of the best saffrons in the world.

A precious spice, adds an exquisite flavor and color to food and drinks. It is also used in distilleries, dairy products and in numerous other applications.

With the name Oregano or Origanum we mean the flowering tops of the perennial herb Origanum vulgaris.

The origin of the name 'Oregano' comes from ancient Greece. It is a compound from the Greek words 'oros' (mountain) and 'ganos' (joy), i.e. 'joy of the mountain', probably due to the fact that the oregano roots prohibit the washing of the mountain slopes by rain or just by its fantastic smell.

In any case, those who have visited Greece, where oregano covers the hillsides and scents the summer air, would probably agree with this name.

Origanum vulgaris grows exclusively to the zone containing the whole Mediterranean Basin and reaching to Central Asia.

Origanum vulgaris, often known as Wild Marjoram, is an extremely invasive plant with a pink flower. Its most important subdivision is the so-called Greek regano (Origanum heracleoticum).

Greek Oregano is one spicy herb and is by far the best oregano in the world. Greek Oregano has a flavour so intense it numbs the end of the tongue when fresh. Like all culinary oreganos, its flower is white. It has coarse, ovate, fuzzy leaves and grows up to 40cm high in bloom. It is grown in light, fairly rich, well-drained soil with pH 7.0-8.0. Use to season fish, meats, salads, sauces, and stews it has medicinal properties as well.

As the Olympic Games of 2004 return back to their homeland, this year finds Greece's wine industry to have earned the consumer trust and confidence it deserves and has now become a considerable selection in the buying lists of major suppliers and distributors in the world wine arena.

Today, Greece produces some of the best wines in the world.

The Greek wines are classified in 'Appellation of Origin' wines, in 'Local' wines or 'Vins de Pays', in 'Table' wines, and in 'Aged' wines.

The equivalent of the European Union's V.Q.P.R.D., Appellation of Origin, is a registered place name under which wines can be marketed if all production criteria have been met.

Appellations of Origin are further defined as 'Appellations of High-quality Origin' or 'Appellations of Controlled Origin'.

Greece has 28 Appellations of Origin, including 20 of High Quality.

The Greek Vins de Pays are marketed bearing a geographic indicator that refers to the commune, wine region or even area where they were made. The purpose of the indicator is to give a regional identity to less-tightly-regulated areas that produce quality table wine. There are more than 70 vins de pays in Greece.

Table wine as a category embraces a broad range of labels. It has been sub-divided in 'Appellation by Tradition' wines and in 'Commercial Wines'.

Some wines improve their character when aged in wooden casks or after bottling. Greek legislation employs special terms to classify such wines according to their categories and aging periods.

It is not produced in any other part of the world except Greece.

Ouzo, it is a 100% Greek product and country's national drink.

Ouzo is made from a precise combination of pressed grapes, herbs and berries. It begins as alcohol made from grape skins or other local produce. It is then mixed together with herbs and other ingredients, including star anise, coriander, cloves, angelica root, licorice, mint, wintergreen, fennel, hazelnut and even cinnamon and lime blossom. The mixture is boiled in a copper still, regulated by a taster.

The resulting liquid is cooled and stored for several months before it is diluted to about 80 proofs, or 40 per cent alcohol.

Ouzo it is usually served as an aperitif on ice and water, in mixed drinks and cocktails.

Ouzo drinking is an art. Or maybe it's a way of life, the Greek way of life.

Ouzo is exported throughout the world and Ouzo is one of Greece's most sought after products.

One of the original twelve, Dodecanese, Greek islands, rich of history and natural beauty is Patmos. Patmos island lies between Leros and Ikaria. History information for Patmos Island

The island was first inhabited around 3000BC most probably by the Dorians, followed by the Ionians and the Romans who used it as a place of exile for criminals, politican and religious troublemakers. That was when Apostle John came to the island where he conveyed the inhabitants to Christianity and wrote the Apocalypse. After the division of the Roman Empire, Christianity was officially recognised and spread rapidly throughout the Greek islands and the Byzantine Empire flourished as Patmos and its people are culturally advanced. However, after the continuous pirate raids, the island was left deserted for several years until 1085 when Reverent Father Christodoulos was given the complete control of the island and began the construction of the monastery. The rest of the history is very similar with the rest of the Greek islands as the island was then conquered by the Venetians, the Knights of St. John, the Turks, the Russians and finally the Italians and the Germans. In 1945, the Germans left and the island of Patmos stayed autonomous until 1948 when, with the rest of the Dodecanese Islands, it joined the rest of independent Greece. In 1983 Patmos was formally declared by the Greek Parliament a Holy Island.

The Monastery of St. John and the nearby Cave of the Apocalypse, where the revelations took place, are major pilgrimage destinations and popular tourist sights. How to reach Patmos island

There are big ferry- boats daily departing from Piraeus (Athens) and the journey to Patmos lasts 9 hours and from Rhodes island about 6 hours.Patmos is connected with the surrounding islands by frequent itineraries of big boats, hydrofoils and smaller tourist boats.

Hora village. This unique village with white houses in the typical Aegean style is the heart of Patmos attracting visitors from all over the world. A medieval village around the Byzantine monastery of St.John. The village is connected with the rest of the island through regular bus transport and taxis or the old donkey path, which takes visitors down to the port in approximately 20 minutes. Chora is a small community in itself, with lots of charming little restaurants and bars, some exquisite shops and small grocery shops.

It is not so easy to reach Psili Ammos, it is one of the most remote beaches of the island. The regular street reaches to Diakofti and then you take the little foot path over the mountain. It is about 20-30 minutes walk.The most beautiful beach of the island is Psili Ammos. The atmosphere here is exotic with the enormous waves and the sandy beach surrounded by wild beauty.No sun beds or umbrellas. A little tavernas serves traditional food. You can also reach Psili Ammos by boat. The boats depart from Skala and the trip takes about one hour.

Nudism is prohibited all over the island but at Psili Ammos, if you are discreet, no one minds if you drop your swim suit. Kambos Beach is perhaps the most organised beach. Several bars and tavernas around, where you can find spinach pie and other delicacies. Sun beds and umbrellas are for rent and water sports as windsurfing and waterskiing. You can easily reach Kambos Beach with the local bus, boat or taxi.

Skala village. All accommodations are mainly located at the quiet back part of Skala or along the sea front. Regular bus transport & taxis connects Skala with all parts of the island and daily excursion boats offer day trips to various quiet beaches and other nearby islands.Skala is the capital of Patmos and the biggest settlement on the island. A charming little port with lots of authentic restaurants, Greek cafenions and shops of all kinds. Evening entertainment is offered through a variety of bars, clubs and open coffee shops.

Agriolivadi is one of the best organised beaches. Two tavernas, one traditional at the beach and one fish tavernas 150 m along the road. Bar/cafeteria that remains open all day.

Agriolivadi is easy to reach, by foot (3 km walk from Skala), local bus or taxi. All the comforts you can ask for exist here. It is a long beach and you can choose if you want to rent a sun bed and umbrella or if you just want to lie down on your towel in the shadow of a tree. Waterskiing and pedal boats for rent.

Grikos village. The old square offers a romantic view of colorful fishing boats and small taverns offering traditional food at all times of the day. Secluded beaches with lots of shady trees and sun-beds with umbrellas in some parts, is the ideal place for a relaxing holiday. An idyllic fishing village, approximately 5 km from the port of Skala, located at the fascinating bay of Grikos with its mysterious rock Kallikatsou which used to house hermits for many centuries. Water-sports are offered for those who seek sportive pleasures. Grikos is connected with all parts of the island through regular bus transport & taxis or old paths leading to Chora and Skala.

Lampi beach is situated at the north part of Patmos. On Lambi beach you can not find any facilities except a very popular fish tavern. The main road leads to Lampi beach, but the bus stops 2 km away. It is famous because of the many coloured stones that cover the beach. Their number has decreased though, they are very popular souvenirs.

Kampos village. The village square as well as the beach offer a variety of good taverns and a small grocery shop supplies you with whatever is needed. Shady trees and sun-beds on the beach give the visitor any comfort required and water-sports facilities are available for those who need some physical activity. Kampos is connected with Skala through regular bus transport & taxis throughout the day. A rural village approximately 5.5 Km from Skala located at a beautiful sandbay with lovely white houses in the Aegean style. An unspoiled piece of nature where fishers and farmers are your next door neighbours.

Meloi beach you can find quite close to Skala (1.5 km), next to the camping site. Because of this short distance from the centre it is an easy choice for your swim. No facilities, but here are two traditional tavernas.

The Monastery of St. John the Divine (Agios Ioannis o Theologos), also known as the Monastery of St. John the Theologian, is a fortified Orthodox monastery on the island of Patmos in Greece. The Monastery of St. John the Theologian crowns the island of Revelation, in Patmos and is one of the most charming and most impressive monuments of Orthodoxy and of the Byzantine civilization. Inside the Monastery the library is located, one of the ancient libraries with a continuous history in the same place where with the list referring to the finder of the library, Holy Christodoulos.

The beach of Grikos has a separate character. Where the first one finishes the other one begins. Grikos is a stretched out tourist settlement that consist of hotels, rooms for rent and restaurants. Facilities as sun beds, umbrellas and canoes exist. It is a combination of harbour and beach. Opposite you can find a stony beach that separates the rock of Kalikatsou from Grikos.

Livadi Geranou beach is a sand beach in the north east of Patmos. Here is a fish tavernas, but no other facilities. In a very short distance from the beach is a small islet with a little church on. It mainly assembles guests that want to combine their excursion with a swim.

The most important gulf is that of Porto Skala that it also the harbor of the island. Looking east you will come across the gulfs of Aspris, Meloi, Agriolivadiou, Kambos, Thermon, Lambis, Saint Nikolaos, Lefkes, Merika and on the west side Hochlaka. On the south you will come across the gulfs of Sapsilos, Gukos, Petra, Diakofto, Stavros, Kipon and Leka. The above gulfs are accessible for swimming and make the best choices for unforgettable dives. Another distinct feature of the geographical partition of the island are its capes that make up idyllic points to enjoy the magical view of the vast blue of Aegean. Some that stand out are, the capes of Koumana, Vamakias, Gernos,Hondros, Livadi, Epsimios, Kalaras and Genoupas. All around the island and within its gulfs there are small islands that emphasize its uniqueness. The largest of them all being Hiliomodi, which is situated in the gulf of Skala. Chalki or Halki Island is one of the Dodecanese Islands and lies 16 km from Rhodes and 302 nautical miles from Piraeus. One of Greece's smallest islands it has 28 sq. km of land mass and 34 km of coastline. It has a population of under 300. No cars are allowed on the island. The capital and port of Nimborio is built ampitheatrically on the SE side of the island and on the Bay of Nimborio. The island can be reached by ferry only.

NIMBOREIO

The settlement of Chalki is Nimboreio. This is a village in the traditional style, standing in the shape of an amphitheatre on the natural shore-line of its attractive harbour. The bay of its natural harbour, the houses and the colours are well matched in a dream landscape.

The houses -mostly renovated- are tasteful, built of stone, with tiled roofs and mosaics of pebbles on the balconies and in their courtyards. An imposing sight is formed by the bell-tower of the Church of Agios Nikolaos, an exceptional piece of architecture, in which marble memebers from the ancient temple at Pefkia have been incorporated. The village streets are paved and free of motor vehicles. Thus it is possible to sit at one of the many little taverns, coffe-shops, patisseries or bars, which in summer bustle with life, and enjoy the peace and quiet.

CHORIO

Chorio lies on the mountain slope, below the Castle. It is reached by following the road which crosses Nimboreios, in about 50 minutes on foot. Chorio was abandoned in the mid twentieth century, when life was transposed to Imporeios, but it remains alive in people's memories. It stands on ancient foundations and is built with carved stone and pieces of column capitals which date from before the second century AD.

KASTRO

Kastro is reached by a ten-minute climb from Chorio. It dominates the mountain top, and was built by the Knights of St. John during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries on the site of the ancient acropolis of Chorio.

PANORMITIS

Panormitis, the Chapel of the Archangel Michael, is ten-minutes' walk beyond Chorio and attracts all the residents of Chalki on its feast day, 8 November. It was built in the nineteenth century by sponge-fishers, next to a chapel of the tenth or eleventh century. From here it is possible to admire the view of almost the whole of eastern Chalki, Imboreios, the coast, Pontamos, a small archipelago of rocky islets (Krevati, Nisos, Praousa, Kolophonas, Attrakousa) and, in the far distance, Rhodes.

MONASTERIES AND CHURCHES

There are a few Monasteries and churches in the island of Halki,every visitor its nice to visit them. The Monastery of Taxiarhis Michail, 5 km to the NW hosts a rare icon of the saint.The Monastery of Ai Giannis Alarghas is 7.5 km. to the West. In the yard of the monastery there is a perennial cypress. There are some houses around belonging to the monastery. Hospitality is offered.The Monastery of Agia Triada and the little church of Stavros tou Xylou, near Ai Yiannis has a view over Tilos. The church of Aghios Nikolaos, protector of the town, has a grandiose bell-tower, a wooden-carved iconostasis of rare art and hagiographies. It was founded in 1861. The church of Aghios Elftherios is near Chorio and that of Stavros is higher up.

BEACHES

Chalki is ringed round with many attractive beaches, some accessible on foot and others which can be reached by boat. The easiest to reach is Pentamos (sandy, 10 minutes from the port), Ftenagia (small, rocky beach, behind the Chapel of Agia Katerini, 15 minutes on foot), Kania (25 minutes on foot, in the north of the island), Yali (pebble beach, on the south of the island), Trachia (double beach beyond Pontamos, can be reached only by boat) and Areta (on the northern side of the island, also reached by boat).

FAIRS

Chalki has fairs which are well-known for their merrymaking, to the sound of the lyre and with competitions in impromptu song composition. The best known is that of Agios Ioannis on 29 August, celebrated at the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Alargas.

ALIMIA

Nearby island north-east of Chalki, with fine sandy beaches. There is a guesthouse at the Monastery of St. George and there are dayly trips here from Rhodes. It is also visited by farmers from Chalki who have houses and animals on the island.

The Catholic church of Santa Maria, located at Neochori (on the corner of Kathopouli and Dragoumi Sts) holds services from April to October at 7am on weekdays and at 8am, 11am and 7pm on Sundays.

St. Francisco church, located close to the Stadium of Rhodes, on Dimokratias St, celebrates mass from April to October at 8:30am on weekdays and 10am on Sundays. During the winter both churches hold Mass only on Sundays.

Rhodes has many doctors of all specialities. Some see patients only at their private surgeries, where payment will be expected. The Dodecanese or Dodecanisos is the name of the island complex in the north eastern Aegean. They are situated between the islands of Crete, the Cyclades, lkarias, Samos and the Asia Minor seaboard.

The twelve main islands are : Rhodes, Astypalia, Kalymnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Kos, Leros, Nysiros, Patmos, Symi, Tilos, Halki or Chalki, but there are also some smaller islands as the islets of Lipsi , Pserimos , Agathonisi , Kastelorizo or Megisti, Levitha , Giali , Kinaros , Kalolymnos , Farmakonissi ,including also other islets, barren islets and rock peaks, all constitute the group of islands known as the Dodecanese.

Sea shells and crustacean fossils which are found on top of mountains indicate that the formation of this island chain, either wholly or partly, occurred under the surface of the sea. During lengthy and complex geological upheavals, dry land emerged only to be, to a great extent, resubmerged some 3-4 million years ago, leaving only the mountain tops of "Aigaiida" above sea level to form today Aegean Islands.

The Dodecanese climate is of a transitional type and ranges from temperate to dry tropical climates which is characterized with lots of sunlight and an extended dry summer period.

Rhodes Marina - Rhodes Island New Marina

Rhodes Marina is Greece's newest state of the Art development, ready to be operational in early June 2011. According to the island's leading estate agents Savvaidis & Associates, the 100 million euro Marina investment would attract a large number of boats servicing an important area of the South East Aegean Sea and boost Rhodes property market.

Rhodes New Marina is expected to attract 20,000 visitors per season from the yachts only, additional guests, including tourists and locals that will use the on-shore facilities, like restaurants, bars and spa, will reach previously unseen levels. Rhodes Marina will have a capacity of over 350 vessels with at least 50 berths for the Super Yachts. The latest technology has been used for the Control Center, 2 kms of fiber optics will connect the boats to Satellite TV services, high speed internet, Cable TV and internal telephone lines. On-shore facilities will include a bank, shops, restaurants, cafeterias, gym, spa with swimming pool, green areas and a beautifully landscaped promenade along the Marina's main pier. The complex will also include 16 VIP suites for yacht owners; available to rent. There will be a shipyard for repairs, a large fuel station, a conference center and sailing club.

The development will contribute to the overall regeneration of the area and improve the quality of life for residents. Recruitment needs around the marina are expected to expand the demand for housing, whether it is rental or purchase, in the surrounding area.

"Property Prices in the nearby area of Rhodes are expected to peak in 2012 once the marina will be fully operational," says Savvas Savvaidis of Savvaidis & Associates estate agency: "Property in the area will reap the rewards as an increase of interest around the marina has already been documented."

Savvaidis & Associates is currently in discussions for the development of 2 large plots of land in the immediate proximity to the Marina that will become a Commercial Centre and a 5* Hotel.

Marina Rhodos - Mandraki Marina is in reality the older harbour of Rhodos.

It is a public port that does NOT offer the facilities of a modern private marina. The port alike the town of Rhodos occupies the northernmost tip of the island right below the medieval castle and opposite the Market Square of Rhodes, a 30 minute drive from the airport and 20 minutes walk from the commercial (ferry) port of Rhodos. The facilities within the harbour area can give a minimum of comfort to the charterers since there is power, water and supermarkets near the yachts.

Mandraki harbor was the main harbor of Rhodes for almost 2,500 years. On the left side you can see the entrance to the harbor and the two deer, (it is believed that the Colossus of Rhodes was standing there), a Rhodian symbol of strength and wealth. Mandraki Harbour still remains very active, with lots of sailboats, private yachts and small cruise boats that offer trips around Rhodes and other nearby islands.

Marina Rhodos Mandraki – Crowded Port in front of Historical Background

Those who hope to get a mooring place in the town port of Rhodes during the high season, are looking for a needle in a haystack. However, Rhodes marina is a great place to start your Mediterranean adventure, among the Dodecanse islands or even the Turkish coast.

Location & Approach

Mooring your boat in this marina is a real privilege since the Rhodos Mandraki marina is actually the old town harbor. Now if you remember your history, the entrance of the old harbor of Rhodos is said to have been guarded by the Colossus, one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. Sadly, the Colossus is long gone but the Yacht Charter sailors can still enjoy that ancient mystique in a modern setting.

The marina is located in the north part of Rhodos island, along the other ports of the old town, being the furthest to the north, with the coordinates 36°26' N 28°14' E. From out at sea, the marina is easy to spot thanks to the medieval castle that sits just above it on a hill. Also, opposite the marina, the Yacht Charter skipper can see the main market street.

The fact that the Mandraki marina is actually the old town port means that it’s not going to offer the facilities of a modern private marina, but regardless of that fact, it seems to be very popular with the Yacht Charter crowds, especially during the summer months when a berth at this marina is very hard to come by.

A reason for that could be the position of the Rhodes island and the Rhodea town in particular, a gateway to the Dodecanese island and even the shores of Turkey. Also, the marina is conveniently situated just 30 minutes from the airport by car and 20 minutes from the commercial ferry by foot. This connects with numerous Yacht Charter islands in Greece and with resorts in Turkey, such as Marmaris.

Also, during the summer, the prevailing wind in the area is the Meltemi which blows from the northwest to the west with forces of 4-6 Beaufort causing some problems for Yacht Charter yachts. North of the port entrance there are rocks and shallow waters that should be avoided.

Infrastructure & Ambience

The marina has 120 berths which are never enough during the summer months, a reason for which a booking in advance would be a good idea. Berths have water and power supply (220V) as well as the basic facilities of toilets, hot water showers, a mini market and grocery shops, a parking lot and a taxi stand for those Yacht Charter sailors with a trip around town in mind.

However, there is an additional bus terminal within walking distance of the marina grounds, in case ther are things you can’t find there. Also within walking distance of the marina is Rhodes main commercial street where you’ll find a wide assortment of shops, banks and restaurants, everything a Yacht Charter tourist needs.

Other than the fact that it gets busy during the summer time, the fact that the facilties here are pretty basic, Mandraki marina is really a great place to moor, since the ancient town of Rhodes is a starting point for many Yacht Charter itineraries in the Mediterranean.

Kastelorizo or Megisti island information

In the eastern tip of Greece, hug the coast of Asia Minor, Kastelorizo or Megisti is a small island paradise, despite the countless beauties and its long history, remains untouched by tourism!

Kastelorizo or Megisti is located only about 3 kilometers off the Turkish coast and 130 kilometers east of Rhodes. About 200 people live there. Among the rocky islands and islets forming that decision in the miniature archipelago, two spread out, as if from the Turkish coast, one was large enough to be inhabited, almost from the beginning of history. So say it was named the Great - and I think this is one of the smaller islands of the Mediterranean. Along the safe natural harbor lies the island's only settlement. This is all about Kastellorizo. Place a pinch, but with such a rich history, which will take some time to explore it thoroughly. A stroll in the streets like a trip back in time.

Changing hands

The Great inhabited since the Neolithic era, as evidenced by the numerous discoveries that have come to light. Strolling in the village, you will notice that many homes, even mansions stand derelict. Several were destroyed in 1926 when a powerful earthquake of 8 Richter shook the region. The destruction was completed during the German bombing in 1943, the fires that followed to give the final blow to the island. He had begun to decline since the early 20th century - then, successive rotations of European occupation forces and the difficult living conditions led to a huge number of local people in exile, mainly in Australia. Walks in the countryside

Apart from the diving you can do in the crystal clear waters of the harbor or in plates, many boats will take you to the beaches located in the neighboring islands and islets: in Ro, where you will see the famous monument of Lady Ro - in Round and St George in the chapel.

But the most striking point for diving in the same Kastelorizo and none other than the Cave of live performing, one of the largest sea caves in the Mediterranean. True miracle of nature, so well hidden in the rocks, to fit the boat, you should bend so that it touches the nose at your fingertips! The nature has decorated the cave with amazing stalactites and the walls get indescribable shades of blue in the rainbow through the water. The Lady of Ro

Colossus Of Rhodes - Greece

The island of Rhodes was an important economic centre in the ancient world. It is located off the southwestern tip of Asia Minor where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean. The capitol city, also named Rhodes, was built in 408 B.C. and was designed to take advantage of the island's best natural harbour on the northern coast.

In 357 B.C. the island was conquered by Mausolus of Halicarnassus (whose tomb is one of the other Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), fell into Persian hands in 340 B.C., and was finally captured by Alexander the Great in 332 B.C..

When Alexander died of a fever at an early age, his generals fought bitterly among themselves for control of Alexander's vast kingdom. Three of them, Ptolemy, Seleucus, and Antigous, succeeded in dividing the kingdom among themselves.

The Rhodians supported Ptolemy (who wound up ruling Egypt) in this struggle. This angered Antigous who sent his son Demetrius to capture and punish the city of Rhodes. The war was long and painful. Demetrius brought an army of 40,000 men. This was more than the entire population of Rhodes.

When Demetrius attacked the city, the defenders stopped the war machine by flooding a ditch outside the walls and mining the heavy monster in the mud. By then almost a year had gone by and a fleet of ships from Egypt arrived to assist the city. Demetrius withdrew quickly leaving the great siege tower where it was. To celebrate their victory and freedom, the Rhodians decided to build a giant statue of their patron god Helios.

They melted down bronze from the many war machines Demetrius left behind for the exterior of the figure and the super siege tower became the scaffolding for the project. According to Pliny, a historian who lived several centuries after the Colossus was built, construction took 12 years. Other historians place the start of the work in 304 B.C..

The statue was one hundred and ten feet high and stood upon a fifty-foot pedestal near the harbour mole. Although the statue has been popularly depicted with its legs spanning the harbour entrance so that ships could pass beneath, it was actually posed in a more traditional Greek manner: nude, wearing a spiked crown, shading its eyes from the rising sun with its right hand, while holding a cloak over its left.

The architect of this great construction was Chares of Lindos, a Rhodian sculptor who was a patriot and fought in defence of the city. Chares had been involved with large scale statues before. His teacher, Lysippus, had constructed a 60-foot high likeness of Zeus. Chares probably started by making smaller versions of the statue, maybe three feet high, then used these as a guide to shaping each of the bronze plates of the skin.

The Colossus stood proudly at the harbour entrance for some fifty-six years. Each morning the sun must have caught its polished bronze surface and made the god's figure shine. Then an earthquake hit Rhodes and the statue collapsed. Huge pieces of the figure lay along the harbour for centuries.

It is said that an Egyptian king offered to pay for its reconstruction, but the Rhodians refused. They feared that somehow the statue had offended the god Helios, who used the earthquake to throw it down.

In the seventh century A.D. the Arabs conquered Rhodes and broke the remains of the Colossus up into smaller pieces and sold it as scrap metal. Legend says it took 900 camels to carry away the statue. A sad end for what must have been a majestic work of art.

According to Greek Mythology, Rhodes was the elder of the Oceanids, one of the daughters of Oceanos (Ocean) and Tythis. Later on, it was thought that she was a daughter of Poseidon (Neptunus) and Alia, or of Poseidon and Amphitritae.

She was married to the god Helios (Sun) and gave her name to the island of Rhodes, whose she and her husband were patron gods and where it was situated the center of her cult. It is thought that the name Rhode is owed to the pink hibiscus which was native to island and was similar to a rose, which is also etymologically related to her name («rodon» in Greek is the rose).

The Telchines, the first inhabitants of the island came to settle here, when Helios created the island of Rhodes and had seven sons and one daughter with Rhode. The girl, called Electryo, died a virgin, whereas the sons reigned in the island and became famous rulers and astronomers.

Rhode was worshipped on the island not only by her own name, but also as Halia and Leucothea.

The birth of the island of Rhodes:

The island of Rhodes is related to several myths, some of them stated in the ancient writers and others surviving in the local tradition. Most of them present a version of the creation of the island.One of the most popular myths in antiquity, has been preserved thanks to the poet Pindarus. According to this myth, when Zeus and the rest Olympian gods came best of their fight with the Titans and Giants, decided to divide the world.

When everybody had already taken one’s part, they realized that they had forgotten the god Helios (Sun), who was absent during the division. Thus, Zeus, the king of gods decided to offer him the first land that would emerge from the waters. At this very moment the island of Rhodes, green and beautiful, emerged from the blue sea of the Aegean.

Helios, impressed by the breathtaking beauty of the island, sent to it light and heat and eversince became the protector god of the island. As the myth states, it is due to this protection and help that Rhodes achieved to become the famous island we know during the Classical and Hellenistic periods.

Another myth attributes the beginnings of Rhodes to the love of Helios for the nymph Rhodes, the daughter of the god of the sea, Poseidon. When Helios saw Rhodes, so the myth goes, he was so taken by her astounding beauty that he made her his wife. They had seven sons and one daughter, Alectrona, who died young. Kerkaphos, one of the sons of Helios and Rhodes, had three children: Kamiros, Ialysos and Lindos. They built a city each in Rhodes, and divided the island among themselves.

Some say that the famed island derives its name from the nymph Rhodes. Others maintain that Rhodes was named after the rose, and this either because the island was abundant in these beautiful flowers or because the ancient inhabitants likened its beauty to that of a rose.

However, Rhodes was known in ancient times by several other names, among them, Ophioussa, for the many snakes that lived there; Elaphousa, because the Rhodians brought dears to kill the snakes that were there (the dears killed the snakes by running over them) Asteria, for its clear blue and starry sky Makaria, for its arresting beauty Telchinia, because its first inhabitants were said to be the Telchines and Attavyria, after its highest mountain, Attavyros.

RHODES AQUARIUM:

The building of the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodos was built during the period 1934-36. In 1937, under Italian rule, it operated as the Reale Istituto di Ricerce Biologiche di Rodi, until 1945, when, after the union of the Dodecanese with Greece, it was renamed "Hellenic Hydrobiological Institute" and operated under the supervision of the Academy of Athens.

Today, the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes operates as a Museum and Aquarium as well as a research centre,and belongs to the National Centre of Marine Research. The aim of the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes is the preservation and display of embalmed and living creatures of the Mediterranean sea.

In the aquarium the visitors (200.000 per year) can admire specimens of anthozoa, molluscs (gasteropods and cephalopods), species of the crab family, echinoderms, and fish of the following families: Dasyatidae, Mullidae, Sparidea, Centrachantidae, Labridae, Scaridae, Siganidae, Mugilidae, Scopaenidae, Triglidae, Balistidae,Monacanthidae, as well as sea turtles. In the Museum are also displayed exhibits such as various kinds of sharks and other fish, sea turtles, toothed whales, (Odontoceti) and Mediterranean monk seals.

Thanks to the research facilities of the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes and the National Centre of Marine Research, the Station runs research programmes, covering every aspect of oceanogrphy in the area of the Dodecanese. It thus functions as a model research unit in the Mediterranean.

FILERIMOS HILL:

Filerimos is a hill 15 km away from Rhodes-town. The upper part of Filerimos is a large plateau and most of the buildings are found on the eastern side. They include the foundations of a temple, an Early Christian basilica and a Byzantine church.

Filerimos hill, takes its name from a monk who arrived here in the 13th century bearing an icon of Our Lady painted, as tradition goes, by St.Lukeears.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF RHODES:

The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is housed in the medieval building of the Hospital of the Knights. The building was begun in 1440 by Grand Master de Lastic with money bequeathed by his predecessor, Fluvian, and completed in 1489 by Grand Master d'Aubusson. The Museum contains the following collections:

Tomb groups from ancient Ialysos of the Geometric and Classical periods: vases, figurines, jewellery, metal objects. Tomb groups from ancient Kamiros of the Geometric and Classical periods: vases and small objects. A collection of Classical, Hellenistic and Roman sculpture. Mosaic floors of the Hellenistic period from Rhodes town and of the Early Christian period from Karpathos. Funerary slabs from the period of the Knights with relief representations of the dead persons or of their coats of arms.

ANCIENT IALYSSOS:

The district of Ialyssos (or Ialysos) encompasses the northern part of the island. It was inhabited in the prehistoric period. Remains of a Minoan settlement have been found at Trianda and Mycenaean cemeteries have been located on the surrounding hills of Makria Vounara and Moschou Vounara (1700-1400 BC).

MONTE SMITH:

The Hill of Monte Smith is the site of the Acropolis of ancient Rhodes. The Green and beautifully laid out archaeological park contains the Hellenistic stadium, built in the 3rd century BC, where the Athletic events of the Alioi Games took place. There were a part of the major festival of the Ancient Rhodians held in honoour of the god Ilios.

ASKLIPIOS VILLAGE:

A picturesque village in the South East part of Rhodes with two spots worth seeing. A medieval castle and the Byzantine church of Theotokou at the center of Asklipios square with intresting Byzantine wall paintings and a small folklore museum.

At the top of the hill the mediaeval fortifications still seem to be watching over Asklipios, offering a marvelous view of the beach stretching end essly from Kiotari all the way to Gennadi.

ANCIENT KAMEIROS:

The district of Kameiros stretches along the northwest coast of the island close to Cape Ayios Minas (ancient Mylantion) in the foothills of Mt Akramytis. In prehistoric times the Mylantian gods, who taught mankind milling and kneading, were worshipped here. Mycenaean necropoleis have been excavated at Kalamvarda, west of Kameiros. Finds from the Geometric period (8th c. BC) testify to the existence of a temple dedicated to Athena on the Acropolis.

The earthquake of 226 BC destroyed the Classical city and probably the Classical temple of Athena Kameiras. The Hellenistic city was built on three levels according to the Hippodamian system. On the summit of the hill was the Acropolis with the Temple of Athena and the Stoa. On the middle terrace was the settlement and lower down the Hellenistic temple, Doric Fountain-house, Agora and Peribolos of the Altars. The area was embellished with numerous votive offerings, stelai and plinths with statues. The earthquake of 142 BC destroyed the city for the second time.

The Acropolis was first excavated by Biliotti and Salzmann in the last century (1852-1864). In 1928 during the Italian occupation of the island, the Italian Archaeological School began a systematic excavation of the area together with restoration work which continued until the end of the 2nd World War.

EXHIBITION "RHODES 2.400 YEARS":

The exhibition "Ancient Rhodes - 2400 Years" is displayed in the Grand Master's Palace". It is a building of the Knights' period, the ground floor of which belonged to the 7th c. Byzantine Acropolis. In 1856 the Palace together with the neighbouring church was demolished by a gunpowder explosion. In its present form it is a reconstruction by the Italian architect M. Mesturino made in 1940. The building was restored in 1988 on the occasion of the EEC Summit Meeting.

THE HOSPICE OF ST. CATHERINE:

The Hospice of St. Catherine was built in 1391-92, under grand master Heredia, by the Italian Domenico d'Allemagna, admiral of the Order of the Knights of St. John (Knights Hospitaller). The founder was an important personage, disposing of considerable means. The foundation charter of the Hospice in 1391 states that it was founded in the burgus of Rhodes, near the walls at the gate leading to the mole already known as the Gate of St. Catherine from 1465.

The situation of the building draws the eye, as it projects into the axis of the high street; the salient part carries the coats of arms of 1516. The Hospice, exclusively intended for eminent guests of the Order, was already in use from 1394-95; at this date traveller Niccole de Martoni described it as beautiful and splendid, with many handsome rooms containing many and good beds.

PALACE OF THE GRANDMASTER:

The palace was first built by the Knights of St John of Jerusalem on the site of 7th c. Byzantine fortress. After its dereliction during the Turkish occupation , it was largely destroyed by the explosion of the powder magazine in 1856. The restoration of the palace with many alterations was carried out between 1937 and 1940 under the supervision of the Iralian architect Vittorio Mesturino and the building was adorned with murals by P. Gaudenzi and F.Vellan.

MUNICIPAL GALLERY OF RHODES:

The Municipal Gallery of Rhodes was inaugurated in 1962 by Andreas Ioannou, a student of modern Greek painting, who was Prefect of the Dodekanese at the time. The Gallery today houses one of the most representative and authoritative collections of 20th-century Greek painting. Most of the Greek painters who worked creatively during these nine decades, developing the features of modern Greek painting, are represented in this collection through some of their most characteristic works.

There are works which marked the creative evolution of these artists, and which were presented in formal exhibitions both in Greece and abroad. The collection of the Municipal Art Gallery includes works by K. Maleas, C. Parthenis, F. Kontoglou, Theophilos, N. Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Sp. Vassiliou, J. Spyropoulos, Y. Gaitis, Fassianos, Kessanlis, Chr. Botsoglou, Moralis, Tsarouchis and many other Greek artists.

LINDOS ACROPOLIS:

According to myth, the cult of Athena Lindia was pre-Hellenic, although this is not borne out by the sporadic excavation finds. The history of the sanctuary begins in the Geometric period (9th c. BC). In the Archaoc period the tyrant of Lindos, Kleoboulos, revived the cult and built a temple, probably on the site of an earlier one. The Archaic temple had the same Doric tetrastyle amphiprostyle plan as the subsequent one. The sanctuary was approached by a rough flight of steps.

After it was burnt down in 342 BC, the present temple was built with the propylaea and the monumental staircase. The Hellenistic stoa is later. In the 3rd c. BC the cult of Zeus Polieus was introduced, although Athena remained the principal deity of the sanctuary. In the Roman period the priest Aglochartos planted olive trees on the spot, and according to an inscription the Sanctuary of Psithyros was built close to the Temple of Athena (2nd c. AD).

CASTLE OF KRITINIA:

It is a Venetian castle at a small distance from Kritinia village built on a steep rock, dominating the whole area.

SEVEN SPRINGS:

Epta piges (seven springs in Greek) lies on the way to Archipolis Village at a distance of about 3km before the church of Agios Nectarios. It is a valley flowing with clear springs and covered with enormous plane and pine trees. Here the visitor can experience the unique beauty of the interior regions of Rhodes.

CASTLE OF MONOLITHOS:

The mediaeval castle of Monolithos is standing among the pines on the great outcrop of an isolated rock from which the name Monolithos (lonely rock) is derived. Leave your car at the bottom and a ten-minute walk will bring you to the summit, where your only company is the sea and the fragrance of the wild herbs. Within the castle walls stands the church of Agios Panteleimon.

BUTTERFLIES VALLEY:

In the western side of the island of Rhodes, approximately five kilometers south east of the village of Theologos (or Tholos), lies the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes). This is one of the most attractive destinations on the island. During August, thousands of butterflies of the genus Panaxia (species Quadripunctaria Poda) overwhelm the valley in order to reproduce.

RODINI PARK:

Rodini Park was probably the first landscaped park in the world. It was still popular with the Romans some years later and they left a bit of an aqueduct here. The park lies in a green and shady bed of a stream.

TSAMBIKA MONASTERY:

The road to Tsambika monastery turns off the main road, some meters before the road to Tsambika beach. The road leads half of the way up on the hill. From this point you will have to walk up the hill, following the 350 steps. On the top of the hill you will find the tiny, Byzantine church, dedicated to Our Lady. It's perched high at 300 m with commanding coastal views, both north over Kolymbia and south over Tsambika beach until Lindos, which makes it worth, to climb up.

The legend is, that any woman, who has problems, having children should go up there (barefoot), to pray to the Virgin, she will be blessed with children. Here on Rhodes the success of this visit means the child must be called Tsambikos if it's a boy, and Tsampika if it's a girl. This name is unique on Rhodes. If you doubt this habit, just call this name out on a busy street, and you will see how successful the monastery is. The saints day is the 7. September.

KALLITHEA SPAS:

The complex of buildings at the spa of Kallithea has been designed by the well known Italian architect Pietro Lombardi and was constructed in 1929.Today the complex of the buildings is comprised of three different parts which all of them are connected with and surrounded by gardens and small parks, with stone paved walking paths and resting places, forming an excellent environment in harmony with the natural landscape.

FALIRAKI BEACH:

More than 5 kilometers wide,Faliraki is the most popular and the most highly organized beach on Rhodes. Faliraki is like one big funfair, with a vast, multiethnic crowd tirelessly in pursuit of pleasure, day and night – in the morning on the famous beach with its striped umbrellas, at night in the narrow streets with their garish neon lights and loud noise. Here you can find anything you can possibly ask for - water sports, cafeterias, night clubs, restaurants, bungee-jumping, places for shopping and more.

GENNADI BEACH:

Gennadi or Genadi is a coastal village with a great long beach at the south part of Rhodes, just after Lindos and Kiotari at a distance of about 60 km from Rhodes capital. The peaceful beach is mostly sandy and partly from white small pebbles. Gennadi offers a fair amount of taverns, restaurants, hotels and rooms to let. For windsurfing the distance from Prassonisi is about 16 Km. Recently Gennadi became the spot for some great dj beach parties held there on Sundays.

KOLYMBIA BEACH:

Kolymbia (Kolympia) is a beach resort located in the midle of the distance between Rhodes and Lindos, at a central location to explore Rhodes. Those that visited Kolymbia will remember the Eucalyptus road leading to the beach from the main road with the big trees on both sides. At the south edge of the beach there is a fish tavern and afterwards a small fishing bay and port (Limanaki in Greek) with a chapel. Kolymbia is ideal for families and those wanting to relax and enjoy the sea.

IALYSSOS BEACH:

Blue waters, a seemingly endless organized beach, the pleasant cool summer climate and mild winters, big hotel complexes as well as smaller friendly ones, shops of all kinds, and many night-clubs all contribute to make lalyssos (or Ialysos) bay one of the most popular resorts on the island. Thanks to the ideal conditions of the region, important international windsurfing competitions often take place here.

AFANDOU BEACH:

Afandou is wonderful long beach (more than 3 km), that lies at a distance of about 20 from Rhodes town and 4 km from Faliraki beach. It is a pebble beach with crystal clear waters. A sandy beach with some pebbles, and sea that deepens quite abruptly.There is a small number of small restaurants, beach sports centers and fish tavernas.

IXIA BEACH:

Ixia lies at the North West part of Rhodes at a distance of about 7 Km from the city of Rhodes close to Rhodes International Airport. Some of the best hotels in Rhodes can be found here. The beach is mainly organized and during the summer season it gets rather windy with large waves, so is suitable for wind surfing and sailing. Ixia also offers spectacular sunsets!

KALITHEA BAY:

At Kalithea bay the Italian spa Facilites, the exotic Vegetation and the sea are combined to a picture comming right from the cinema. The Kalithea spa Building complex is a distinguisshed Cultural Monument.Especially outside the high season, this is the favourite spot for local people looking for a quick swim. However, You should not confuse it with the minibeach below the Baths, which is full of visitors who come in little boats from Rhodes town to admire the amazing facilities of the Baths, currently under renovation.

PEFKOS BEACH:

Pefkos (pine tree in Greek) is an attractive village and holiday resort. There is a beautiful small beach of soft golden sand.

KIOTARI BEACH:

Kiotari is the last developed village in Rhodes and offers a series of luxury newbuilt hotels. The beach in Kiotari has a few tavernas and water sports as well.

STEGNA BEACH:

Stegna is a beautiful small beach with mixed sand and pebbles in the area of Archangelos (500 meters along the road) at a distance of about 32 kms from Rhodes Town on the east coast. The beach is quiet with a family atmosphere and unspoilt, only partly organised with umbrellas and sunbeds. There are several taverns some bars around the small fishing boats port of Stegna, water sports and rooms to let.

PRASSONISI BEACH:

Prassonisi lies on the southern tip of the island, it is accessible by jeep and is considered to be a windsurfer’s paradise.

LARDOS BEACH:

The beach of Lardos bay is located at a distance of 65 km from Rhodes city, 6 Km from Kiotari after Pefkos. The beautiful sandy beaches of Lardos are known as some of the best beaches on the island. Crystal clear waters, and gently rolling surf make for an idyllic atmosphere for fun in the sun, or relaxing on the many sun beds under the shade of an umbrella. Also, there are many Tavernas along the beach where you can get a chilled drink or a quick snack while you soak up the sun.

VLYCHA BEACH:

The picturesque Vlycha Beach, within easy reach of the historic town of Lindos, features everything you would expect of an idyllic beach: warm sand, crystal clear blue waters, plenty of sun beds and umbrellas and Canteens serving cool dinks and great tasting snacks. If water sports are what you are after, Vlycha has a good variety to choose from; everything from banana boat rides, to off shore snorkeling.

ELLI BEACH:

Elli is a sandy organised beach next to Rhodes Aquarium (on the right) and you can find here several intresting beach bars, restaurants and a beach volley.

LADIKO BAY:

Ladiko bay with the beautiful small beach lies at a distance of about 15 km from Rhodes town and just 3 km from Faliraki and is a must see in Rhodes. Small but rich. Fine sand, rocks the hidden beach in Greece with a fish taverna on the top.

TSAMBIKA BEACH:

Tsambika (or Tsampika) is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes. A long, broad beach with fine, golden sand and dozens of colourful little flags marking out the various eating establishments and beach sports centre.

ANTHONY QUINN BAY:

Natural stone surfaces ideal for reclining under the sun, pine trees reaching down to the water's edge, emerald green water - Anthony Quinn certainly showed impeccable taste when he fell in love with its miniature bay. The beach is known today by the actor's name since he bought this part of the island when filming "The Guns of Navarone" here. The waters owe their deep emerald colour to the kush green vegetation which surrounds the beach. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes.

LINDOS BEACH:

Follow the sign for the beach and you'll find yourself at the left-hand end, while if you go straight down below the Acropolis, down Pallas St., you will find yourself at the right hand end, known as Pallas Beach. Basically they are two different beaches sharing the same bay. Sun beds everywhere, umbrellas, tavernas, crowds of people - from groups brought by coach from other parts of Rhodes to Brits who settle in Lindos each year for the whole summer.

AGATHI BEACH:

Fine, wet golden sand and some canteens - this is the only thing you will find on Agathi. It is a beautiful, sheltered, cosy beach, and the only sign of civilization are its canteens. Camping is possible there, so take your sleeping bag and camp at the cave which is at the end of the beach. An ideal spot to spend the night.

TRAGANOU BEACH:

The beach consists of small light coloured pebbles and is boarded by crystal-clear waters. Only a small section of the beach is organized the rest is left in its natural state. In Traganou there is also a small fish tavern welcoming hungry bathers.
