I guess it’s good to keep forgetting cds at the rest before you drive. Because of that, I’ve been driving around listening to the radio for the past 3 days and need some dirt in my life. Today I google “Ghostface Killa” and stumbled on this “Iron Sharpens Iron” mixtape hosted by Dub Floyd & Maffew Ragazino. This mixtape cameout about a month ago but it doesn’t matter, there’s tons of free music on the web so take advantage.

Soho Wasted

The band met up for brunch on Saturday. The plan was to eat then hit the studio to rehearse for our show that evening. For some reason we decided to screw practice and go to Primitive after we ate. Primitive was the event sponsor and laced us up with gear from their Spring 2012 collection. Later that night, we did a quick 5 song set and stayed the whole night to party it up since the promoters provided us with tables and some bottles. The phrase that came out from that night was “Soho Wasted”. Thank god for designated drivers.

Adrian Younge Presents Venice Dawn (EP) by Wax Poetics

Adrian Younge is part of DP Sounds, the production group that throws various events in Los Angeles and who also gave the Rhythm Natives the opportunity to perform in L.A. in our early years. This funky man is too talented and needs more props, biggup Wax Poetics for recognizing the real.

The story begins in 1998 as budding hip-hop producer Adrian Younge finds himself confined by the limitations of the MPC. He begins teaching himself how to play various instruments so he can fully realize his vision. First it was keyboards, then drums, sax, guitar, and bass. Fascinated with the sounds of Italian soundtracks by the likes of Ennio Morricone, Younge begins work on the soundtrack to the fictional film Venice Dawn, recording the album intermittently over the course of the next year. What developed was a sound equal parts Morricone and Air. Self-released, the entire album was composed, arranged, and played by Younge. Only a thousand CDs were pressed, replete with faux soundtrack album art designed by Younge himself. Sold mostly in the L.A. area, the CD became collectable among those in the know.
Fast forward to 2008, and Younge finds himself at the center of the Black Dynamite zeitgeist. Instrumental in the film’s development, Younge not only edited the film, but composed the original score as well. Hailed as a modern blaxploitation masterpiece, the Black Dynamite score solidified Younge’s position as a force to be reckoned with on the new worldwide soul and funk scene.
