It's impossible to know where inspiration ends and when personal creation begins. Humans are a sensory species. If you keep your eyes and your mind open every day, there are untold opportunities for you to be influenced by the flurry of activity and visuals that surround us. Even during your most boring run-of-the-mill day; if you really look, you'll see a new color or a new pattern or hear a new song.

Often, the people you think of as the most creative tend to be just a bit more open to the inspiration around them than most. There's really no trick to it; as Einstein said, it's the spark that triggers fresh thought and new approaches to old problems or new challenges.

It's easy to get stuck in a rut and miss the ingenious muse that awaits you every day. So this week, try staying more open to the founts of inspiration around you and enjoy your own version of creativity, whatever that may be.

Happy New Year, everyone - hope you all enjoyed a fantastic beginning to 2012! I want to encourage you again to spend more time than money making memories this year! A lot of folks tell me they "don't know how you do all the things you do." I just make the time to maximize every second that I can. After all, today is all we're guaranteed; I may get hit by a bus tomorrow! So I try to squeeze as much into every day that I possibly can so I leave something behind that hopefully makes a difference to someone! I think that's why old buildings and the Rialto Theater in particular speak so loudly to me; it's stood since 1937, in the face of hurricanes, economic challenges and multiple generations.

You may not think so but using time creatively is as much an art as painting or playing an instrument. And we all have that creative spark; some just leverage it more than others. Let's talk about one of the greatest losses we experienced in 2011: Steve Jobs. He's typical of how the most creative people look across disciplines and seemingly unrelated areas to inspire change. His fascination with the age-old art of calligraphy and design inspired the unique Apple products we know and love today.

So, open up your mind in 2012 - and use it, don't waste it! While you're at it, please show some respect for your talents. I lost an acquaintance over the holiday; yet another wonderfully creative person lost too soon to drugs and alcohol. Life is just too short to lose sight of what you can offer if you just make the choice to share it. Take care of yourself (and your creativity) this year, give back, and make the most of the time you have today!

Artisan Events:
Non-profit arts organizations spend a tremendous amount of time planning, installing exhibits, rehearsing, and marketing their events. Non-profits, especially in this economic climate, often operate on a shoestring budget and are truly in it for the love and passion they have for the arts. As you think about completing your end-of-year gift giving, please consider including one of our local non-profits, arts-related or otherwise, in your budget. They value every penny!

Consider the five non-profit theater organizations in our region and what it takes for them to provide you with just one evening of enjoyment. The performing rights usually cost $75.00 per performance (special musicals like, "Always, Paty Cline" the Rialto Theater is producing again this year cost $300.00 per night) to produce. They have at least four rehearsals a week for two-plus months before opening night. On top of that, they have sets to build, set dressing to complete, wardrobes to finalize, and music to learn. They have concessions, posters, and playbills to purchase and distribute. Then, of course, there's the overhead related to even having a space to perform in: water, electric, rent, etc.

It truly takes a village to appreciate AND support the arts. Come play a part during the holidays and start the year off right by supporting your local non-profits through donations of your time and/or money. They can't do it without you!

Artisan Events:

We did have a great event in downtown Aransas Pass for "Black Friday" with no pepper spray or police called in to manage rabid shoppers, thank goodness. Thanks to all who enjoyed a great evening visiting and seeing what's in store for you in our historic downtown.

At the Rialto Theater, we met a couple of part-time residents we share with Austin, some artists, more old friends, and new residents entertaining the thought of volunteering for future events. So, all in all, we count it as a success and truly enjoyed the evening. Christmas lights are going up all over town, and it's that time of year of goodwill and peace (I hope!).

The parties will now commence. From the Art Center for the Islands' "First Friday" Christmas Party Reception this Friday, through the Rialto Theater's first-ever New Year's Eve bash, you've got lots of opportunities to enjoy the arts through the holiday season. There are multiple galleries, non-profit and otherwise, showing off some first-class art work by our talented creative folks. So, while you're trying to work through your shopping lists, please remember there are artists out there needing your support, some musicians ready and willing to play for you, and actors emoting all over the region just for you as well!

You may not have noticed but there's a growing movement afoot about shopping and eating locally. In tough economic times, there are several arguments that support doing this. You're aiding folks closer to home from the artists to the merchants to our family farms (do you really want to buy "Made in China" merchandise? Seriously?). You're using less fuel to travel to shop elsewhere (lowering your carbon footprint & saving the planet!). And by eating foods grown locally, you get double that effect with fewer trucks on the road bringing food to you from who-knows-where. Obviously, we can't solve the whole problem at once but we have to start somewhere, so let's look in our own backyard.

Forget the mad dash, angry shoppers & angst of driving all the way over to Corpus, San Antonio, or Houston to shop in the mega-malls. Go to our downtowns in Aransas Pass, Rockport or Ingleside - find something original that will actually mean something to the receiver as well as the artist or shop-owner who desperately needs your business to put food on their table.

Downtown Aransas Pass galleries and some other merchants are staying open late on Friday, November 25 (aka "Black Friday") for your entertaining pleasure. Shop till you drop with some stops for a drink and dinner at our downtown eateries. You may even be hearing some live music in some spots to really enjoy the evening. Simplify your life; stay & play right here and bring some joy to an artist's heart this holiday season! You'll be surprised what you'll find right out your back door.

Artisan Events:

Friday, November 25, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. - "Black Friday Downtown Celebration" Downtown Aransas Pass artists. Admission: Free.

Fridays & Saturdays, 7:00 p.m. beginning November 25 - "A Christmas Carol." Harbor Playhouse. Admission: $6-$16.

Friday, December 2, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. - "First Friday" Christmas Party Reception. Art Center for the Islands. Admission: Free.

Saturday, December 3, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - "Currents" Opening Reception. Annual All-Member Show. Rockport Center for the Arts. Admission: Free.

Saturday December 10, 7:30 pm - "Stuart Michael Burns CD Release Party." Rialto Theater. Admission: $15.

This argument has probably been around from the time of the earliest cave drawing. There's a certain degree of art snobbishness that exists to varying degrees and anyone associated with exhibiting art has had to deal with it. With the advent of more affordable access to technology for artists today, the latest argument involves digital manipulation and "is that art?"

Photographers, especially, get a bum rap on a lot of fronts. Because many of us now have "digital darkrooms," we are particularly suspect. Just as we did in the traditional darkroom, we do color corrections, dodging, cropping, etc. but without the toxic chemicals. Many shows and competitions won't allow photographic art to enter at all. I'm biased, but I always wonder about someone who can spend years working on a painting but can't respect a photographer who has a nano-second to capture an image.

Luckily, Aransas Pass print-maker, photographer and all-around-good-guy Gary Hansen doesn't worry about all this. He just makes great art. His photography is full of character and interest, many of them showcasing our local natural beauty that we all know and love. He creates in his home studio and exhibits at shows like the annual Tarpon Inn show that benefits Art Center for the Islands. He currently exhibits his work there and at the Rialto Theater. He's also a great excuse to shop local while supporting our artists in the weeks ahead!
One is the Shorelines exhibit at the Art Center for the Arts. This is an annual juried art exhibit featuring almost 200 artists across the planet. The breadth of work and media in the displays will no doubt have at least one piece that will touch your heart. The other is the All Member Show titled "Deck the Walls, Y'all" opening Friday at the Art Center for the Islands at their monthly First Friday reception.

This is also an annual show featuring the best works the artist members can provide. Again, the range of subject, styles, and media types will leave you surprised and impressed. You may just find something you just cannot live without. Or, perhaps, something a loved one would enjoy for the upcoming holiday gift-giving season. Enjoy the world of art with a local flavor. "Buy local" is a food movement, but the same applies to other goods and services, especially in this economy.

Don't forget another local attraction that's attempting a national presence on November 5. The Rialto Theater is providing free birthday cake (they're 74 this year) beginning at 6:30 p.m. and invites everyone to show up for their photo shoot at 7:00 p.m. for the "This Place Matters" campaign the National Trust for Historic Preservation holds annually. The more, the merrier.
Maybe we'll get some dark and stormy nights so we can make some progress toward a more normal rainfall level this year. As I'm stocking up on candy, I'll be following my annual tradition of watching horrible 50's science fiction movies with flying saucers, giant insects and such. You know the ones; the movies with nuclear overtones that are so bad they're good.

Closer to our current time and day, there are a couple of plays you can check out that honor the Halloween traditions of fright and mayhem. Harbor Playhouse has "Sweeney Todd" on stage. This play is based on an 1850's story that influenced the 1979 Broadway play which won a Tony award and a 2007 movie that featured Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

The other is a cult classic on stage at the Aurora Arts Theatre. "The Rocky Horror Show" comes complete with audience participation & props. The film it inspired premiered in 1973 and remains in limited release today. It was one of Susan Sarandon's first films along with Barry Bostwick. If you've got a sense of humor, both are worth seeing live on stage. Halloween, after all, is just about having fun so enjoy it through performing arts as well.
The Italian art and architecture we're seeing in Italy has been incredible. It's made me feel a bit less inclined to sweat the small stuff in dealing with saving a seventy-four-year-old building when I'm looking at renovation work in varying stages for structures that go back centuries. If you've got good bones to work with, it's all creative icing on the cake beyond that.

The enduring detail and the variety of the works we've seen is just overwhelming. Today was our first day exploring Bologna. It seems around every turn are fantastic sculptures, carving and painting. Many of the piazzas are connected with covered market areas supported by vast columns. And at the top of each one are unique caps sculpted with individual thematic scenes. The time and effort this took completely boggles the mind.

Unfortunately, Bologna is covered in graffiti. And I'm not talking about the nice, artistic paintings that show some talent. It's just your basic garden variety you see in every city. And it's literally found everywhere there's a wall that can be spray painted. Such a shame that so many don't respect what they've got. So, take the time this week to show some appreciation for what you've got available to you: there are new concerts, exhibits, and plays that just began all at your fingertips - don't miss them!

Artisan Events:

During the day, Cassie works full-time as the Educator at Fulton Mansion State Historic Site, where she molds minds young and old. In the evenings, she transforms into strange and often outlandish characters for Rialto and Rockport Little Theater. She wants to thank...everyone!
After playing Leander Longfellow in the Rialto’s 2009 summer melodrama, Taylor hoped his wife, Marsha, had had her fill of acting, so that he could focus on their many, many, many home improvement projects. However, he has returned to the Rialto stage because he just can’t say “no” to Marsha or Kay. When he is not acting or digging trenches at home, Taylor is the Programs Assistant (i.e. does it ALL) for the Rockport Center for the Arts.

A newcomer to the Rialto Theater, Nathan Winger, 24 years old, is originally from Rylander, a small town in Wisconsin. He traveled around the country as a missionary with his parents and four siblings. After settling down in Harlingen, Texas, he finished high school at the age of 15 and started college at Texas State Technical College. He went through several degree plans until his mother asked him what he wanted to be. His answer was clear—an actor. He graduated from Texas A&M Corpus Christi this past December with a Bachelor’s Degree in Acting/Directing.
This is her first time back on the Rialto stage since Jim and Kay directed "Always...Patsy Cline," wherein Karen played the part of Patsy's friend, Louise. Following that, Karen enjoyed portraying the sarcastic Claire in the Rockport Little Theatre's version of "Rumors." Karen is absolutely in love with the stage and always at the ready for casting calls. She has even tried her hand at directing a couple of times but shares that there is no place like being on stage. Her husband, Paul, is one of her greatest fans and supporters. Karen hopes that if you see him in the audience, you will give him a thumbs up. (He and his brother John were the creators of the side lighting that brightens the walls of this theater.)
Gene is a General Motors retiree and is currently working maintenance at Pelican Bay Resort in Fulton. No newcomer to the Rialto, he played Jed Lunn in the melodrama―Pure as the Driven Snow and Danny O’Boy in―Show Time on the Showboat. He wants to thank Jim Elder and Kay Wise-Denty for this great opportunity to play the role of Judge Gaffney. He would also like to thank his wife Teddi for her backing and support. Looks like Broadway is getting closer. Maybe someday.
He made his community theater debut as the Delivery Man in―Barefoot in the Park at the Little Theater Corpus Christi in 1966 and has now appeared in over 40 stage productions. More recently, he has portrayed multiple characters in―The Boys Next Door at Harbor Playhouse and Dr. Rance in―What the Butler Saw at Port Aransas Community Theater. Sincere thanks to the Rialto staff and the cast and crew of―Harvey for their patience and support in making this a memorable experience.
Jim continues to enjoy "trodding the boards" at the Rialto. He has particularly enjoyed being involved with Harvey since it gives some reality to the invisible playmate he was accused of having long ago. Jim has been active here both on the stage and backstage since he moved into the area. He takes pride in a number of the productions he has participated in as director, scene designer and actor. Plays, such as, "Of Mice and Men," "Always...Patsy Cline," "Pure as the Driven Snow" and "Rush Limbaugh In Night School" to name just a few. Jim truly enjoys the social nature of the theatre. It brings out the talents of so many people in the community. "Absolutely a pleasure to work with people discovering that childlike willingness to perform that so many have hidden..."—including himself.
With all the negative world news, the drought and wildfires in Texas, and the ongoing economic challenges we all face, one could argue it seems frivolous to focus on art and cultural activities in our little corner of the world. But I would argue that it's the creative force and artistic energy around us that can lift the spirit and position us to actually tackle the tough issues we deal with day to day.

It's 9/11 as I write this. We all share horrible memories about that day. Yet, artists and musicians reacted in the best way they knew how and their work reflects the emotion of that time. Their exhibits and performances gave others an outlet to work through their grief and allowed space to move on. The New York City memorial site itself exhibits a fabulous artistic design to honor those we lost. The shrines scattered throughout New York all have an artistic element that enables expression in a way that words simply cannot.

The Rialto Theater is finalizing plans to celebrate the seventy-fourth anniversary of the building's grand opening this fall. On dark days, I wonder if we're really making a difference to people in the region and if the ongoing struggle to make ends meet is worth it. Then I remember the woman in her eighties who talked so eloquently about walking to the Rialto during the blackouts of World War II and the happy memories she had of going to movies that gave her some time away from the stresses of the day. It gave her room to cope and inspiration that better times were possible. So, as you deal with your own stresses this week, please take some space for art and respite. There are so many local organizations and galleries that can give you calm from the storm and peace in the midst of chaos. And that, as they say in the Mastercard commercials, is priceless.

Many artists struggle with a crisis of faith in their work, in their styles, or in their voice. Sometimes they completely miss the mark and go so far off course from their natural talent they never regain momentum. It's challenging to stay true to an original vision when it's so far out of the "norm." Here on the coast, there are many artists who stay with the safer "birds & beaches" motif. It's more difficult here to be contemporary or modern in style but so important to provide another viewpoint.

Whether you're an artist or not, don't hesitate to show yourself in your work. How boring would it be if we were all the same because we were afraid of being different? Be bold. Be unique. Be yourself in whatever you do.
In between, she somehow finds time to write songs and record her albums. She recently finished recording "The Plum Tree and the Rose" should be released by early 2012 but I'm sure we'll get a preview live on stage this Friday.

Her connection with the audience was obvious the last time she was here and I'm sure that's a gift further developed by her heavy touring schedule. Couple that with an absolutely heavenly voice and beautiful songs and that made her one of my favorite performers in concert last year. I'm very much looking forward to seeing her again. I've had the greatest luck meeting professional musicians as part of my duties at the theater but very few exhibit the grace and talent Sarah has.

Please join us in welcoming her back from Ireland at the theater on Friday and help us greet this world traveler, songstress, and great talent.
But there are many examples of artists becoming successful fairly late in life. This month's "Poets & Writers" magazine profiles Sam Savage. After years of writing, his first novel, "Firmin: Adventures of a Metropolitan Lowlife" didn't get published until he was sixty-five and now his third book will be out this fall.

You had to be living under a rock to miss Susan Boyle's videos on YouTube. We tracked her path in 2009 on "Britain's Got Talent." Guinness World Records recognized her as the oldest person to reach number one with a debut album in the UK last year. Her first album was released when she was forty-eight. Her seasoning didn't prepare her for sudden stardom so we also got tabloid reports on top of kudos for her voice.

Lots of people live their life doing the "responsible" thing to put bread on the table. When they retire, they'll often use it as an opportunity to create and let go a bit. If you've given yourself excuses on not following your artistic yearnings, stop. You're never too old to learn and experiment. Will you make a number one record or write a best-selling novel? Maybe not. But if you measure success by how people respond to your work and not in how many dollars you make, you've definitely got a shot at the big-time. Go for it.
Every year, member shows at arts organizations in Port Aransas and
Rockport choose merit winners and reward them with their own show later
in the year. This month, two merit exhibits are featured for your
viewing enjoyment. The Art Center for the Islands in Port Aransas
opened last Friday. In their case, attendees to the member shows vote
for their favorite artists and the top four are featured in this
exhibit. You'll see the the work of Yvonne Quarles, Lynn Dickey, Pat
Dittberner and Narice Hopp there.

For their annual member show, Rockport Center for the Arts invites a
juror who reviews the work and chooses five Merit Show participants
while the public votes on one as well. Christa Brothers, owner,
Bismarck Studios Contemporary Fine Art Gallery, San Antonio was the
juror for the show this year. The opening reception for this show is
this Saturday and features Ed Boyd, Mary Downing, Marie Gian, Jose
Guardiola, Jamie Speck and Pam Stanley.

Make some time over the next few weeks to enjoy the varied talents
and different styles of these artists. I don't know if you'll think
it's your "cup of tea" but I do know you'll enjoy visiting the galleries
and I'm willing to bet you'll find something that touches your soul.

was the Wylie Opry. I'm not a hard-core traditional country music fan
but the heart and effort the performers put out for the audience from
that little stage was very impressive. They've operated now for
twenty-eight years, performing every Saturday night. When Debra Winger
approached me last week about starting an opry-style variety show, I was
more than happy to set aside some stage time to see if she can make it
work.

So, once or twice a month, depending on interest & participation
the Rialto will be bringing it's own "Grand Ole Opry" to the local
stage in your hometown. Auditions are this Saturday, August 6 from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Rialto. She's looking for musicians to
form the house band as well as comedians (Minnie Pearl, where are you?),
singers, dancers, etc. You name it, she's looking for it. Forget
"America's Got Talent" and come see what we can do!

Please help us spread the word. No one else in the area is doing an
Opry style show that we're aware of and, coupled with this historic
theater (the "pearl of the coastal bend"), it could be the start of
something big! Toss aside your inhibitions, come explore the stage and
let your talent run wild!
I've stayed in denial as long as possible,
but I have to admit it now. All I want to do is just sit in front of a
fan, preferably in very close proximity to an air conditioning vent,
sipping iced tea or some other deliciously cold beverage and do nothing
at all. Unfortunately, that isn't happening. Duty calls me into the
heat from a variety of sources.

This weekend was lovely though, despite the raging temperatures.
The Rialto Theater had wonderful audiences at the grand opening of their
annual summer melodrama and we attended a lovely outdoor wedding with
some musician friends in Rockport. Special events like this involving
creative and artistic people are always interesting and a step off the
beaten path. The groom's musical family all joined in to add lovely
melodies to an absolutely beautiful experience.

Brave the heat and take some time this week to bring beauty to your
days. There are several non-profit arts organizations as well as
privately owned galleries with fantastic art in every single town in our
immediate area. All you have to do is take the time to look and see.
You won't be sorry and it will take your mind off the summer
temperatures for a bit, anyway! By the way, this is the final weekend
for the Art Center for the Islands "Bi-Annual Barefoot Art Sale," so if
you haven't been over the ferry for a look-see; it's worth the journey
for some great prices on some wonderful art.

Daily through August 2 - "Bi-Annual Barefoot Art Sale." Art Center for the Islands. Admission: Free.
