<p><em>… That most people arrive ready to buy or sell.</em></p>



<p><em>…That they want listings imediately.</em></p>

<p><em>… That speed matters more than context.</em></p>



<p>But that assumption is usually wrong.</p>



<p>People don’t fall in love with the homes first. (Not always, anyway).</p>



<p>They fall in love with places. With neighborhood. With the lifestyle.</p>



<p>Where they walk their dog.</p>



<p>Where they like to grab their coffee.</p>



<p>This week’s Authority Site of the Week is a strong example of what happens when a real estate website is designed around the community, first.</p>



<p>Instead of organizing the experience around listings, awards, or self-promotion, the site is organized around place. And that single design intention changes everything.</p>

<p>This isn’t necessarily wrong, it’s just become obvious and expected.</p>



<p>The issue is that most websites spend too much time talking about themselves too early. Long before trust is established. And long before the visitor feels understood.</p>



<p>When a website opens with credentials, it forces the visitor to decide whether or not to believe you.</p>



<p>But when a website opens with community, it removes that decision entirely.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">What This Website Gets Right Immediately</h1>



<p>From the very first scroll, the focus is clear …</p>



<p>You’re not visiting a website focused exclusively on transactions. It’s a website about living well in a specific place.</p>



<p>The language and copy is intentional (it’s hyperlocal). The imagery is contextual.</p>



<p>The site design invites exploration rather than urgency (to subscribe to get listing alerts, etc.).</p>



<p>Neighborhoods aren’t simply treated as SEO pages but rather as distinct experiences.</p>



<p>And lifestyle content is the foundation.</p>



<p>Real estate shows up naturally, later in the journey, as a service that supports the life someone already wants to live.</p>



<p>That order matters more than most agents realize.</p>



<h1 class="wp-block-heading">The Core Positioning Shift</h1>



<p>The strongest positioning move on this site is that it doesn’t try to convince you that the agent is the expert, it demonstrates it.</p>



<p>It demonstrates it by leading with community instead of credentials. The content and design quietly positions the agent as hyperlocal without ever needing to say the words “hyperlocal expert.”</p>



<p>There’s a lot of confidence in that.</p>



<p>Confidence in knowing that when someone feels understood, the transaction takes care of itself.</p>

<p>There are clear paths to contact.</p>

<p>I carry around this yellow notebook that I use to brain dump and reflect whenever I&#8217;m stuck on something or what to get analogue and think things through. Sometimes I&#8217;ll scribble at the gym after a workout and I&#8217;ve always treated the end of the year as a moment to pause and reflect.</p>



<p>(<a href="https://fs.blog/annual-review/">Farnam Street has a great annual review guide here</a>). </p>



<p>It&#8217;s not a performative recap though yes, I&#8217;ve learned it&#8217;s important to acknowledge and celebrate yours wins, no matter how small. </p>



<p>But it&#8217;s a good time to step back, take inventory, ask a few honest questions about where I am, what worked, what didn&#8217;t, and what I&#8217;m actually building. I find that if I don&#8217;t create space deliberately, the year has a way of rolling into the next one without ever being processed. </p>



<p>What I&#8217;m trying to do is assess so that I can pivot accordingly. That means taking a look at the work that I did, the energy it required, and whether the business I&#8217;m running matches the one I set out to build (though I feel like this part keeps changing). </p>



<p>Here are some of the lessons I learned my first year in &#8230; </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lesson 1: Success &amp; Failure Are Not Opposites</h2>



<p>Success and failure exist on the same timeline. </p>



<p>This year delivered some wins that I&#8217;m proud of and mistakes that I&#8217;ve had to sit with longer than I wanted. </p>



<p>It felt at times like momentum carried friction with it. Or at other times progress came bundled with problems that required new decisions, new systems, and new levels of ownership. </p>



<p>The good news I suppose is that failure is almost never catastrophic (if you learn from it). It showed me where I was second-guessing instead of deciding, where I moved too quickly, and where patience would have produced a better outcome. </p>



<p>The lesson is to learn faster, trust your instincts, and move forward without letting pride slow down the process. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lesson 2: Being In Business for Yourself Is A Mirror</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s no buffer when you work for yourself. No one&#8217;s there to absorb some of the tension when things feel uncertain. No one else to carry the weight of decisions when the outcome is unclear. </p>



<p>Every choice reflects right back at you, exposing habits you didn&#8217;t realize were running the show. </p>



<p>This year revealed the habits I need to drop, the new ones I need to build, and the person I need to become to build the business I really want to build. </p>



<p>2026 brings an opportunity to lead with more intention and resolve. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lesson 3: Asking for Help Is Not Weakness</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s a fear of spending money too early especially when you&#8217;re just starting out. But really, it&#8217;s just about defining priorities, communicating expectations, and accepting that growth requires trust. </p>



<p>The business improved the moment I stopped trying to be the bottleneck and starting acting like a builder. The challenge was finding the right people to slot in the right places. But going into 2026 feels good. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lesson 4: Your Health Is Not Separate From Your Work</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s this subtle belief that building something meaningful requires pushing yourself to the edge and dealing with the consequences later. This year made it clear that later always arrives faster than expected. I&#8217;ve spent almost the last two months of the year sick probably from &#8220;grinding things out&#8221; and neglecting my health. </p>



<p>Energy, focus, and resilience are not unlimited resources. When you&#8217;re tired, decision-making suffers and creativity dulls. So taking care of your health is not a luxury reserved for slower seasons, it&#8217;s a necessity to operate at a high level. </p>



<p>It&#8217;s a pre-requisite to sustaining momentum, especially when things are demanding. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lesson 5: Relationships Are the Real Infrastructure</h2>



<p>Some relationships deepened this year and others shifted. I feel like that&#8217;s just par for the course. Business has a way of clarifying which connections are built on trust and which ones exist only when circumstances are convenient. </p>



<p>The good news (and what frankly, has always been a strength of mine) is that the relationships that mattered most were not transactional. They were built through consistency, shared experience, and honest conversation. These people offered perspective without pressure and support without expectation. </p>



<p>If you&#8217;re setting out to build something, develop a community around you that&#8217;ll help support you. It&#8217;s stabilizing. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lesson 6: Progress Is Often Quiet</h2>



<p>Not every step forward showed up as an epic milestone or a measurable win. I thought progress always just meant growing faster and doing more. </p>



<p>But progress is also learning when to say no, when to narrow your focus instead of expanding it, and knowing when to stop (or hire help sooner) before burnout makes the decision unavoidable. </p>



<p>Confidence came not from having all the answers, but from trusting myself to navigate uncertainty with more clarity than I had a year ago. That mental shift alone is making the work feel more sustainable. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Looking Ahead At Year Two</h2>



<p>Year two feels different, not because the work is easier, but because the foundation is clearer (or at least the path feels clearer). </p>



<p>Yes, there will still be some experimentation. There still needs to be some refinement. But it will be guided by what this year revealed rather than what it imaged. The business feels like more than just an abstract idea. It&#8217;s starting to feel like something real, with shape and direction. </p>



<p>The focus moving forward is not doing more but rather doing the right work, with intention, structure, and a deeper respect for the systems that make growth possible. </p>



<p>One year in, I finally feel like I&#8217;m steadier than I was when I set out and clearer about what this path requires. And confident enough to keep building without pretending that it should feel effortless. </p>



<p>That feels like the right place to begin again. </p>

<p>It’s easy to run an event, right?</p>



<p>Pick a venue. Put down a deposit. Build a schedule. It’s all just logistics.</p>



<p>That’s the trap.</p>



<p>Yes, you can technically throw an event by picking a hotel ballroom and firing off some emails. But if you want to host something people <em>actually</em> remember &#8230; something that sparks a movement, changes mindsets, and impacts the lives in the stories attendees tell long after it&#8217;s over, then you need to go deeper. </p>



<p>You need vision. A shared vision.</p>



<p>Not just a speaker lineup. </p>



<p>Not just a branded lanyard. </p>



<p>Not just a pretty stage. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Vision-Driven Event Framework</h2>



<p>Here&#8217;s the magic behind every great event that I&#8217;ve ever been a part of or have experienced in some capacity  (as a speaker, attendee, sponsor, etc.) &#8230; </p>

<p>Why are you gathering these people? What’s the purpose beyond networking or learning? What belief, transformation, or momentum are you trying to create?</p>

<p>What should it <em>feel</em> like to walk into the room? What kind of energy do you want to cultivate? Intimate? Electric? Safe? Bold?</p>

<p>What are attendees walking away with? Mentally, emotionally, or tactically, that&#8217;s going to make this experience unforgettable?</p>

<p>Only now do we start thinking about logistics, location, and layout. The venue supports the vision, not the other way around.</p>

<p>Before you book a single thing, answer these questions:</p>

<li>What is the <strong>purpose</strong> of this event beyond making money? Is it branding? Is it demand-generation? </li>



<li>Who are you gathering and <strong>why now</strong>?</li>



<li>What is the <strong>transformation</strong> you want attendees to experience? How are their lives <em>different</em> after the event is over?</li>



<li>If your event had a tagline or (as my friend Dustin would say,) a rallying cry, what would it be?</li>



<li>What will people say about your event <em>a year</em> from now?</li>
</ul>



<p>If you can’t answer those questions yet, pause. Don’t pick the venue. Don’t design the logo. Don’t chase sponsors.</p>

<p>Some of you have already heard the news &#8230; It&#8217;s a bittersweet feeling to say that my chapter here at Follow Up Boss has come to a close as of earlier this month.</p>



<p>I&#8217;ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the team at FUB so freakin&#8217; much and I&#8217;m proud of the heart that they pour into their work to impact our customers each and every single day. </p>



<p>I wanted to thank Dan &amp; Tom (for like the millionth time) for just an absolutely incredible opportunity to live out some pretty epic dreams and make an impact. I&#8217;ll forever cherish the work that we did and the memories we created.</p>

<p>Birthing FUBCON was a labor of love and an experience that I’ll forever cherish. The goal was to level up an industry and I honestly feel like we accomplished exactly that. </p>



<p>The amount of creativity and detail poured into creating an experience that captured the attention of many, was an experience. It challenged all of us to push out of our comfort zones (in all the right/good ways). And working with Ralph was a masterclass in event production. </p>

<p>Then there&#8217;s Aria, the best sidekick and friend a co-worker could ever ask for. I told you I&#8217;d do my darnedest to lift you up higher than even you think you could go. The sky&#8217;s the limit. You grew so much and I&#8217;m proud of you and thankful for you!</p>

<p>I want to thank my bosses, the Justin&#8217;s, for giving me the trust, the space, and the autonomy to do what I do. And honestly, for looking after every single employee through what was one hell of a crazy year in 2020.  </p>



<p>And I want to thank my local management team and sales reps for always confiding in me and giving me the opportunity to take the lead helping me to grow and help create an impact. </p>



<p>We had one hell of a fun time at times putting in the work, didn&#8217;t we? </p>
