i'ts been a while since my last blog. i've been into so many challenges that made me decide to stop writing. but here i am again... life does not end there and i have to continue pursuing my goals and my dreams.

the vision of being on the top is now very, very clear to me. and my drive to conquer the mountain of success is now blazing in my heart. i know it's not easy but i have to do my best. i know God will lead me there and i know He will strengthens me.

my first business failed. my business partner left me and i'm buried in debts. but this will not stop me from going and i will continue to fight 'til i get there. i'll fight for my family, for my wife and my three kids.

i scheduled monthly payments for my debts. good thing they gave me good terms.
i invested in mutual funds and stock market even in small amount.
and now, i'm engaged again with another business.

though i've been to three MLM companies and i once said that this is not the right business for me, but now i'm into it again. but this one is special since i know now why i failed and i now know how to deal with it.

me, here's my grand plan for my million...

1. the 20% or 200T will be given to various church and non-government institutions as a form of tithes:

a. Caritas Manila - is the lead Catholic agency for social services and development in the Archdiocese of Manila and a lead provider of technical assistance to social service and development ministries in the five other Metro Manila dioceses.

b. Love-a-Parish-Program - is a centerpiece outreach program of the Greenbelt Chapel (Sto. Niño de Paz, Makati City), which aims to aid hard-up parishes with monthly grants.

c. Gawad Kalinga - is a poverty-reduction and national-building movement lunch by Couples for Christ (CFC), a Catholic lay community, to care for worse-off Filipinos and survivors of natural disasters.

d. Anawim Lay Missions Foundation, Inc. - is a home of 55 abandoned elderly plus a few orphans and physically and mentally handicapped persons founded by Catholic Lay Preacher and Best Selling Author Bo Sanchez in Brgy. San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal.

e. He Cares Foundation Inc. - is a Christian non-profit organization that helps extremely poor street children in Metro Manila by providing basic needs like food, clothing, education and medical assistance, as well as spiritual support. it was founded by full-time lay missionaries, Joe Dean Sola & his wife, Ardis in 1996 at 11 Acuña Drive, Philvirra Homes, Project 8, Quezon City.

g. SMFI Scholarship Program - is the flagship program of the Simbayanan ni Maria Foundation that caters to the educational needs of deserving yet underprivileged youth of Taguig City. it is founded by Rev. Fr. Anton C.T. Pascual

h. Philippine National Red Cross - is the premier humanitarian organization in the country, committed to provide quality life-saving services that protect the life and dignity especially of indigent Filipinos in vulnerable situations.

though 20% is too little, it can still change and support people's lives.

2. the 30% or 300T will be allocated to finance my existing business--the computer sales & services. it still needs revolving capital and payment of existing loans.

3. the other 30% will be used to fund the creation of my new business that would compliment my existing business--a computer & internet shop.

4. the 10% or 100T will be used to purchase additional balanced fund from my mutual fund provider. this will serve as our retirement fund.

5. the remaining 10% will be deposited in a bank and will serve as an emergency fund.

there you have it.

so, if there is anyone out there reading this blog with lots of millions in his/her pocket and don't know what to do, you can share it with me and let's do this together. :)

I was waiting in line at the bank the other day when a thought came into my mind. How fast can one peso turn into a million through doubling?

Yes, the geek in me came out and I decided to while away the time doing some mental math. And so I counted each step: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32.. until I reached 1,048,576. Did you know that it takes only 20 steps to become a millionaire?

Anyway, seeing that I was still far from the bank teller, I took my thoughts further and came up with ways on how to become a millionaire by using the doubling method. The process was quite interesting and here’s what I discovered:

How do you start? From zero to one peso
I thought it would be cool to say that before I became a millionaire, I started with nothing in my pocket. So I said to myself, how do I earn P1 from nothing? Of course I could simply ask a friend for it. Immediately, a financial lesson came to mind: Leveraging on OPM or Other People’s Money. You might be interested in learning how I discovered the power of OPM in my article entitled Checkmate.

Turning P1 to P2, P4, P8 and P16
I can continue asking other friends for a peso until I have P16 but that wouldn’t be so nice. So assuming I was able to get P4 from friends, what can I do now to double my stake? And then I thought - I could perhaps buy some candies and sell them for profit. Steps 1 through 4 done!

P16 to P32, P64, P128 until P256
Fresh from the idea of buying and selling candies, I decided to expand my venture to snacks and junk foods. Now that I have higher capital, I can purchase more marketable items such as snack foods and sell them to friends. I remember an officemate who used to sell these stuff at work and he made good income out of it.

Making P256 grow into P512, P1,024 and P2,048
As the amount of my stake grows, more and more income opportunities come to mind. I’m sure you have your own list of things you can buy and sell. If you were to ask me, at this stage - I’d go for selling cellphone credits or eload. It’s a sideline business with very low capital and readily available market. You can even do it online through websites like Load.Com.Ph. My brother earns a net of around P2,000 a month just by selling eload in his office.

From P2,048 to P4,096, P8,192 and P16,384
So far, I’ve been doubling my money through selling online and offline. What else can I do to make money? And then I thought, freelancing is always a good idea. I can use the money to perhaps learn a new skill or hobby that I can turn into an income opportunity. This was what I did back then when I first bought a book on Visual Basic programming and started making custom applications and softwares.

Going from P16,384 to P32,768, P65,536, P131,072 to P262,144
As you go further, doubling money actively would become too exhausting and time consuming. I believe that the financial strategy should change at this point. This means considering low and medium risk investments to passively make the money grow. Aside from acquiring paper assets, I can also leverage on multi-level marketing companies and direct selling networks.

Doubling P262,144 to P524,288 and finally P1,048,576
At this point, my train of thought was interrupted by the fact that I’m already next in line at the bank. So I had to somehow let go of my thoughts and attend to my errand. But now, I’d like to ask you, if you had more than a quarter of a million, what would you do to turn it into a million? I remember a few years back, I bought a business with this amount of money. It hasn’t doubled yet but I’m optimistic it will happen soon.

In conclusion, I’ve realized that doubling a peso until it becomes a million cannot just happen instantly. It takes planning and a good amount of consideration of your personal abilities, skills and level of tolerance against risks. I believe that only through this slow but sure process can one assure himself of long-term wealth.

Also, if you’d noticed, I didn’t actually doubled my money through one transaction but really used my stake to earn small profits until I reach the next step. I simply used the doubled figure as my objective. Doing so made it easier for me to make more realistic plans.

Lastly, I learned that every stage requires different strategies to achieve the goal. This proves the importance of continually educating ourselves. I believe that our level of financial literacy is the prime factor that determines how much we can achieve financially in our lives.

what's holding us back from becoming big? most often than not we only think small. that's why we only grab small opportunities. God gave us wings so that we could fly. fly like an eagle. don't listen to those chicken around us telling us that we are like them. that we can't make it, its too risky. you know the story.

but who really is can stop us from flying? no one. all we have to do is to dream high, dream big, focus to our vision and mission even though there's so much distraction, be brave and don't hesitate, follow our instincts, flip our wings and let it go!

last january i listed all my to-do this 2008. and to date i'm happy to announce that most of my wishes were accomplished. here it is:

1. we invested in mutual funds through Sun Life Financial. i met ms cynthia martinez, a SLF agent, in one of Bo Sanchez' Truly Rich Seminar. we scheduled a meeting, discussed the details and then we invested. last may we made our subsequent investment as follow through.

2. i'm currently playing online stocks trading through Accords Capital's Philstocks.Ph. i'm currently losing since the market is low but its alright, it's just temporary. hint: this is the right time to buy stocks because the prices are down.

3. we acquired an education plan for our two children from Prudential Life. we just want to ensure their education expenses when they grow up.

4. i'm now a member of Simbayanan ni Maria Development Cooperative. the number one cooperative in Taguig. kamay-ari na ako!

5. i got my driver's license from the Land Registration Office Pasay District Office in Roligon. i can now drive hehe.

6. last but not the least, i created my own company in partnership with a friend-- the Citiblitz Computer Sales & Services. my dream is to sell one computer for each Filipino. wow! it's really big! hehe last july our gross profit reached +30k and this month it doubled already. yes! oooppss... we haven't computed our net yet. hehe

someday this company will grow and we will expand. we will create computer/internet shop/cafe. we will have repairs and service center. of course we will have a computer store where walk-in customers can shop whatever their needs. and then we will branch out...

all of this i can attribute to my dreaming big. i will not stop even when i fail but only when i'm done. don't block the runway because the jet plane is now ready to take off. please don't delay cause i'm building an empire!

the challenge of business: a fool's act

it's really hard to go into business especially if we haven't analyzed yet all the factors to be considered in putting up our own business. but we must be careful not to move and take action or else we will be trapped in a situation called "analysis paralysis".

but in my case, when the opportunity presented itself, i grab it immediately and made a couple of lapses or shall we say a "fool's act" when i decided to partner with a friend.

the problems

1. i got really excited. when i was a member of the Parish Youth Council (PYC) in our parish, a visiting priest, which is the author of our ministry, taught us not to make any decisions if we are in extreme feelings (e.g. overjoyed, very sad, fiery angry, excited, etc.). these extreme feelings overclouded our minds that lessens our ability to think wisely over a certain situation.

because of excitement, we didn't saw all our options and possible problems that we will encounter in the future. we had the worst problem we could ever have--we overlooked our initial capital. we didn't make an estimate of the needed funds for our initial operation. we only prepared for our expenses and so, when our first and biggest client approved our proposal we crammed on where to get our needed capital.

2. the truth about my partner's financial status. my eventual partner didn't tell me that she has no available money to invest. all the while i thought she's waiting for her money to come from her Social Security System (SSS) or a loan to be approved or something that guarantee her involvement. but the sad part is up to now she contributed not a single penny to our initial capital.

this put me in chaos. i shouldered all the burden of financing everything.

my solutions

1. loan again. with these problems, i resorted to file another loan and this time its a Back-to-Back Loan from the Simbayanan ni Maria Development Cooperative (SMDC). but still our capital is not enough to cover our first major transaction. and so we need another patch up solution.

2. look for investors. presses with time and out of options, me and my wife sent text messages (short messaging service-SMS) and emails inviting our friends to invest in our business. good thing we have a few friends who were brave enough to risk their hard-earned money with us. a special mention to our Godfather, Tito Binggoy who carried the big load for us. but of course i promised to give them a 5% per month interest for their investment. business is business, you know.

on july 9, wednesday, we completed our full delivery to our first major client. thank God for He supplied me with friends that trusted us and invested with us. we surrendered everything to Him and faithfully trusting Him to provide for us and we were glad that He never let us down. truly, He is a Great Provider and a Good Father to His children.

the fool-est act of all time

since we are in a hurry to establish the company we decided to allow my partner to register the company as sole proprietorship under her name. and so all documents, receipts, bank account, etc. were all legally hers. our partnership agreement up to now has not been signed by both parties since we are still finalizing the details.

if worst things happen, may God forbid, i don't have anything that would support my claim. huhuhu...

hopefully, things will get better soon. Lord, help me please!

my first official business

though i tried my luck in buy & sell, network marketing and real estate businesses, nothing yet became my niche.

an opportunity

an opportunity comes when my wife's friend ask her to form a partnership in computer selling and services. we hurriedly grab this opportunity since our soon to be partner is an experienced and an expert in the field. she holds a list of suppliers and clients that we can tap when we start operating. at the same time we have a big prospect that needs to be taken care of asap. all we need to do is to come up with our own company and register it to make it official.

financing

we agreed on our initial capital of 100k and we decided to divide it for 50k per share. and since we are in a hurry, i immediately applied for a consolidation loan with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS). good thing, all my files are in order and my application was approved immediately.

registration

we faced some problems especially during the registration. to register a partnership with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) it requires a lot more documents than the usual and since we are in a hurry we decided to start our company under the sole proprietorship with my wife's friend as general manager. that means we only have to register the company with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

the company

on june 16, monday, our first ever official business had its soft launching. it is located in mandaluyong city near the City Hall. though we still need to register it with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for our official receipt, we can now start looking for clients.

additional sacrifice

due to capital and budgetary constraints, we lend our personal computer for our company operation. i know that sooner or later it will be replaced with new, sleek, all powerful, wi-fi, notebook.

we are hoping and praying that this first venture of ours would succeed and grow. so help us God.

Tuyo, Tinapa and Galunggong!

Let me tell you a story. Three construction workers were on top of their half-finished skyscraper. "Rrrrring!" the lunch bell sounded, and the three men sat on a steel beam jutting out of the 56th floor with their lunch boxes in hand.

The first guy opens his and groans in exasperation, "Tuyo!" (dried fish). There is not a day that I don't get tuyo for lunch!" He turns to his buddies and announces, "Mark my words. If I still get tuyo tomorrow, I'm going to throw myself from this building."

The second guy opens his lunch box and moans, "Tinapa" (smoked fish). Everyday, I get tinapa!" He looks at his friends and declares, "Believe me when I say this. If I get tinapa tomorrow, I'm going to jump and kill myself."

The third guy opens his lunch box and it was his turn to despair. "Galunggong" (scad). All I get is galunggong!" I'm telling you, if I still get galunggong tomorrow, I'm going to jump from this building and die."

The next day, the lunch bell rings and all three men are again seated on the 56th floor. The first guy opens his lunch box and starts crying, "Tuyoooooo!" And so he jumps and crashes on the ground.

The second guy opens his lunch box and wails loudly, "Tinapaaaa!" And he also hurls himself off the building and dies.

The third guy opens his lunch box and screams, "Galunggonggggg! " And so he too jumps off the building and splatters on the ground.

Days later, during the funeral of the three men, their three wives embrace and weep together. The first wife cries out, "I didn't know my husband didn't like tuyo anymore! Why didn't he tell me? If only he told me, I would have prepared something else."

The second wife echoes her statement, "Yes! If only I knew, I would have cooked something else, not tinapa!"

The third wife, between sobs, speaks up, "I don't know why my husband killed himself." The two wives look at her curiously. "Why?" She went on, "Because ... my husband prepares his own lunch everyday..."

I love this crazy story because it presents a very important truth: all of us prepare our own lunch. If we don't like our jobs, if we don't like the state of our relationships, if! we don't like what's happening to our spiritual lives - we have no one to blame but ourselves. Because God has given us free will. He has given us the power to prepare our own lunch.

If you want to earn more and be free from debt, if you're sick and tired of your bad habits, if we want to put more joy in our marriages, if we want to grow in our relationship with God - then go back to your kitchen and prepare yourself another dish. Because you design your own future. You create your own destiny. Ask yourself what kind of future do you want to have? What kind of life? What kind of eternity? You decide.

Why is the Philippines Poor?

THE DIFFERENCE

The difference between the poor countries and the rich ones is not the age of the country: This can be shown by countries like India & Egypt, that are more than 2000 years old, but are poor.

On the other hand, Canada, Australia & New Zealand, that 150 years ago were inexpressive, today are developed countries, and are rich.

The difference between poor & rich countries does not reside in the available natural resources. Japan has a limited territory, 80% mountainous, inadequate for agriculture & cattle raising, but it is the second world economy. The country is like an immense floating factory, importing raw materials from the whole world and exporting manufactured products. Another example is Switzerland, which does not plant cocoa but has the best chocolate in the world. In its little territory they raise animals and plant the soil during 4 months per year. Not enough, they produce dairy products of the best quality! It is a small country that transmits an image of security, order & labor, which made it the world's strongest, safest place. Executives from rich countries who communicate with their counterparts in poor countries show that there is no significant intellectual difference. Race or skin color are also not important: immigrants labeled lazy in their countries of origin are the productive power in rich European countries.What is the difference then? The difference is the attitude of the people, framed along the years by the education & the culture & flawed tradition. On analyzing the behavior of the people in rich & developed countries, we find that the great majority follow the following principles in their lives:

1. Ethics, as a basic principle.
2. Integrity.
3. Responsibility.
4. Respect to the laws & rules.
5. Respect to the rights of other citizens.
6. Work loving.
7. Strive for savings & investment.
8. Will of super action.
9. Punctuality.
10. and of course...Discipline

In poor countries, only a minority follow these basic principles in their daily life. The Philippines is not poor because we lack natural resources or because nature was cruel to us. In fact, we are supposedly rich in natural resources. We are poor because we lack the correct attitude. We lack the will to comply with and teach these functional principles of rich & developed societies. If you do not forward this message nothing will happen to you. Your pet will not die, you will not be fired, you will not have bad luck for seven years, and also, you will not get sick or go hungry. But those may happen because of your lack of discipline & laziness your love for intrigue and politics, your indifference to saving for the future, your stubborn attitude.

If you love your country, let this message circulate so that many Filipinos could reflect about this, & CHANGE, ACT!

business & savers club

in my last article i utter my disappointment with the less interest of our members in our financial literacy seminar. but now i will hold on to our mission and to stay focus in achieving what we have started.

my only consolation after our activity was that the participants wanted to have a follow up. not just another seminar but a concrete action plan on how to move another step towards financial freedom. they wanted to come up with a savers club and a business that would create passive income among members.

those who have low risk tolerance may opt to save their money, pool them together and we will park it at the Simbayanan ni Maria Development Cooperative with a minimum annual interest of 6% for time deposits.

while the other members who have high risk tolerance will embark on a business with high return on investment but with potential high risk. though up to now we have not decided on what kind of business we are going to enter since we also need to protect the each others investments.

here are the suggestions:

1. eatery - pares, lugaw/goto, kwek2, siomai, chicken feet
2. store - ladies bags and accessories
3. rtw - ukay-ukay

we can also help market the existing products of our members then encourage other members to come up of their own business. sooner or later we may come up with a company that would concentrate on marketing our own products.

but since we have not yet decided on what business should we take, we better start our savers club as of the moment. at least we can say that we did something to jumpstart our small idea.

but subconsciously don't

for the second time, we conducted our Financial Literacy Seminar last sunday for the Singles for Christ (SFC) members in Taguig. and for the second time only few members of our chapter, most specifically our unit, came. again, we started late because people also came in late.

i told them that maybe Bo Sanchez was right. that consciously we want to be rich but subconsciously don't. i think if they really wanted to be rich no matter what time of the day they would have come with excitement but surprisingly they don't have the fire.

my unit head partner, girlie, said, "i think the members are not yet ready or shall we say doesn't understand yet the need to attend this kind of activity. we should continue this advocacy because this is very important. we just need to be patient."

my only consolation is, i just hope that they would find time to read the seminar talk outline that i sent them through our egroup. at least they have an idea what they've missed.

i thought evangelizing is the most difficult task on earth. but i was wrong. i think it's easier to evangelize other people to believe and trust God than to convince your families, relatives, friends, that financial ignorance is expensive.

one example is when i lend my book, the 8 Secrets of the Truly Rich by Bo Sanchez, to my brother and cousin just to share to them the same inputs that i gained from reading it but unfortunately it doesn't interest them.

well, let's try again next time. and i hope next time more people will come.

one of the actions that we need to take in moving out from the "rat race" going to the "fast tract", as explained by Robert Kiyosaki of the Rich Dad, Poor Dad, is to have our own business. but how do we look for a business that best suit us? here are some tips on how to look for a business.

how to look for your own business

1. identify people's need or simply create a need.

1.1 identify people's need. before you start any business, ask the market first what they need. ask what is it that they need and what they want that you can help provide. start a business that has an immediate market to avoid difficulty in selling. The basic needs are food, shelter and clothing.

1.2 create a need. if you happen to have a products or services that is not need-based you will still need to educate the people on why they have to purchase your products or services. You must create awareness. You must come up with a good marketing strategy and advertise your business.

2. find your core gifts/interests. start from your hobby. if you like cross-stitching, beads making, baking, etc., your family, friends and neighbors like it and asks for more then maybe you can earn from it. try improving your masterpieces and packaging and charge them. from that you can start your own small business.

3. sell a good/new idea. it maybe an existing product and you added some features. for example: simple "sago", put some flavorings, crushed ice, a bigger straw and a good packaging turned into "zago". other examples are "cooked ice cream", "frozen taho", etc.

4. buy and sell or network marketing. this is the easiest way to start a business. ride form others existing products. try looking for good products and start your buy and sell business. in multi-level marketing or networking, don't concentrate on recruitment but on marketing the products because it is the "bread and butter" of the company.

5. buy an existing business or franchise a business. if you have enough capital to start a business but still confused on how to start one, better buy an existing business or simply franchise a business. you just need to learn the process and follow their system. then improve on how to serve your customers better.

by creating your own business, you're not just creating a source of income for yourself but also create jobs for your fellow countrymen.

i love basketball. but i seldom play the game because i'm not good at it. but i think i just need some practice and basic training. another thing that prevents me from playing is that i lack in height. but i love watching basketball. i love the plays, the moves, the team works and every aspect of it.

international

i'm an avid fan of Team PILIPINAS. i'm not in particular of any player. i just want the best and fitted players in the Philippines to don the national colors for pride and honor. though the Team played miserably in the last International Basketball Federation (FIBA) qualifier held in Japan last year for the right to represent Asia together with China as host in the coming 2008 Olympics.

the Team, although highly reinforced by Fil-foreigners, still lacks in ceiling. teams from China, Iran, Lebanon, among others are much taller than the Filipinos. also, the FIBA suspension hurts the preparation of the Team a lot. well, i hope we can perform well next time.

local

in local arena, i'm a follower of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). i like Barangay Ginebra Kings,since i was a kid but i'm not a die hard fan. i love the PBA as a whole and i support the underdogs.

tonight, the first game of the finals will begin between Purefoods Chunkee Giants and Sta. Lucia Realtors. the Giants are gunning for their fifth All Filipino Conference trophy while the Realtors will try to win their first championship after seven years. tradition versus ambition. experience versus hunger. this will be a very good series.

love, love, love! happy hearts day, everyone!

it's Valentines Day once again. flowers, chocolates, greeting cards and email messages are all over the place. as usual, malls, restaurants, cinemas and parks are expected to be filled with lovers, families and friends. it is a very good opportunity to express ones love. and of course, it is a good day for business people too.

due to time and budget constraints, me and my wife may end up celebrating at home with the rest of the family.

what is love?

the word love has many different meanings. it depends on the person on how he/she will define/use it. here's the definition of love from the Bible: 1 Corinthians 13:3

"Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."

for me, love is an intense emotional feeling towards someone or something. it can be love for God, for your parents, brothers and sisters, friends, neighbors, even strangers, especially the beggars and the needy. it can be love for pets, animals, plants, trees, toys, nature etc.

but to love a person, it must be unconditional, no buts and no ifs. it is selfless, forgiving and understanding.

share the love

share a smile, say hi, say hello. you may never know, the one destined for you is the fellow right next to you. share your love to everyone. share your blessings, your time, your talent, your resources as God calls us "to love one another."

what is your ultimate desire?

my ultimate desire is to serve God more and help more people, to have more time for my family and my community, and to organize more activities and projects that will help narrow the gap between the rich and poor in my country.

this desire will help me overcome all obstacles and challenges that i will meet along the way. it will keep me focus and endure all the pains and failures that i'll mistakenly commit. this desire will push me to the limits and to take an extra mile.

that is why i need to be rich.

present status

most of my time being an employee is alloted to my work, 9-10 hours a day, 5 days in a week. the remaining less quality time is divided among my family, service and myself.

up to now, my job is still my bread and butter. i cannot quit from my job yet because our daily expenses depend on it. that is why i created other sources like buy and sell and joined a multi-level marketing. but still it is not yet enough to take the place of my monthly income.

to be rich is to be free

to be rich is to be financially free. to be financially free means not working for money, but money working for me. i can create more businesses and that businesses will create more jobs and livelihood projects. i control my time. i can play with my kids more. i can have romantic dates with my wife twice a week. i can go to my service whenever i want. i can evangelize and bless more people.

more actions required

i will continue my business in dealership and network marketing since the products are full of potentials. i will continue my stocks trading online. i need to look for more opportunities that will give me additional income like partnership, foreclosed properties, etc. i will try to invest in other businesses or buy a franchise.

i won't give up. i need to keep my desire burning. i'll do whatever i can. i need to be persistent, work hard and be patient. and i'll let God surprise me on what fruit of this labor be.

one of the things i've learned from playing Cashflow 101 Boardgame invented by best selling author and businessman Robert Kiyosaki is to be patient. be patient to wait for the proper time and opportunity before grabbing the most awaited "big deals" of the game. one needs the proper timing, enough resources, and good risk assessment before jumping in to any given opportunity.

patience defined

according to Wikipedia, "patience is the ability to endure waiting, delay, or provocation without becoming annoyed or upset, or to persevere calmly when faced with difficulties."

practical application

to reach my goal, to become a Christian millionaire in the near future, i need this important ingredient to success to help me work hard and persevere more.

as a businessman - i will market and find more subdealers for the newly improved Goldskin Placenta Soap, enriched with Papaya extract, Squalene and now with Vitamin E. it is also available with a new packaging and endorsed by actress Snooky Serna.

as a realtor - i will look patiently for more foreclosed properties and other for sale announcements within my area in Taguig. i need to focus on a certain radius to avoid inconvenience and hassle.

as an investor - since the stock market is so confused and still waiting on what will happen to the US economy and its adverse effect to the world as a whole, i will treat temporarily all my transactions as long term investment rather than short term.

the right opportunity will come to me and i will reach my goal, soon... so help me God.

today, our chinese brothers are celebrating their Chinese New Year. for them it is the most important traditional chinese holidays. the festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month and ends with Lantern Festival fourteen days later.

the celebration starts with traditional Dragon Dance/Lion Dance and followed by fireworks. families are gathered for the feast and thanksgiving. this is also the right time to visit relatives for a reunion.

year of the rat

2008 is the "Year of the Rat". springsgretingcards.com said, "a Rat Year is a time of hard work, activity, and renewal. this is a good year to begin a new job, get married, launch a product or make a fresh start. ventures begun now may not yield fast returns, but opportunities will come for people who are well prepared and resourceful. the best way for you to succeed is to be patient, let things develop slowly, and make the most of every opening you can find".

preparations

chinese new year is filled with preparations that pertain to finding good fortune. house decorations include red banners or couplets with new year wishes and symbols of good fortune in gold. candies and rounded fruits represent togetherness, sweetness, longevity, children, and prosperity. new clothes worn should be in orange and red, which signify happiness and prosperity.

don't forget the tikoy! tikoy is a chinese new year pudding that symbolizes a rich, sweet life, stickiness, close family ties, and the round shape signifies family reunion.

if you are wondering why the chinese new year has no fixed date, it's because it is based on solar and lunar movements that represent time based on different days in different years on the chinese calendar. usually, the chinese new year is commemorated either in january or february.

trivia: did you know that the commonly used greeting, "Kung Hei Fat Choi!", is not synonymous to "Happy New Year!"? instead, its meaning translates to "Congratulations and be prosperous!".

today is "ash wednesday". a holy day of obligation for us Catholics. followers are required to hear mass and to have their foreheads crossed with ash as a sign of renewal of their baptismal vows and serves as a reaffirmation to follow the ways of Christ and to seek forgiveness for their sins.

it is also the start of a 40-day Lenten Season in the Catholic Calendar where we commemorate Jesus Christ's passion, death and resurrection.

the church encourages its constituents to do fasting and abstinence as a form of sacrifice. during fasting, the faithful will not take any food only water. in abstinence, the faithful refrain from eating meat: pork, beef and chicken.

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales has asked the faithful to give to charity and said, “beyond the rites and liturgies of Blessed Ashes and the disciplines of the fast and religious practices, what the Lord wishes is the discipline and prayer that reach out to the good of others”.

in the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI had a similar Lenten message as he called on Catholics to “retrain ourselves spiritually through practice of almsgiving in order to grow in charity and recognize the poor Christ Himself.”

i miss the ILC

me and my wife used to join the International Leaders Conference (ILC) organized yearly by the CFC Singles for Christ (SFC) when we were still single. it's a gathering of all SFC members not only from the Philippines but from different parts of the world.

it's a wonderful experience for all of us since we really enjoy the talks, the speakers, the mini-praisefest, the songs, the foods, the venue, the sceneries and the hospitality of the local people.

we went to Corrigedor, Bacolod, Dumaguete and the last one is in Manila during the SFC Homecoming. that was five (5) years ago. we missed the conference in Boracay, Baguio, Lanao del Norte, i forgot the other two.

this year, as SFC celebrates its 15th year anniversary, the ILC will be called ICON or International Conference. it will be held on February 15, 16 and 17 at the Clark Expo, Pampanga.

the theme for 2008 is "Love one another, as I have loved you" (John 13:34-35). heres's the theme song with the same title composed by RP Tesoro.

are you having some nightmares about running away from your collectors/debtors? and when they reached you, you screamed and woke up.

while having some breather the doorbell rung and you saw your old friend from whom you owed some money a long time ago. then you smashed yourself bigtime and you keep telling yourself, "this is another nightmare!" pak! pak! ouch!

well, i think this is the right time to really wake up from your debt nightmares and learn how to get rid of your burdens.

here are some tips from Bo Sanchez, author of the book "8 Secrets of the Truly Rich", on how to rise from your debts.

1. declare your freedom day. thinking about all your debts will only kill your spirit. don't focus on your problem or it will magnify. you need to declare a deadline to end your woes. set a day when you'll be financially free. remember that every problem has a solution. don't lose hope.

2. simplify your lifestyle. examine your lifestyle and discover a new habit of simple joys. simplify. learn to tighten your belt. refrain from overspending. avoid unnecessary expenses. delay self-gratification.

3. schedule your payment. from a simpler lifestyle you can have or increase your savings. write down how much you can set aside each month to pay your debts. schedule all payments and start with high interest-loans. if possible, transfer high interest-loan to low-interest loans.

4. can't afford? don't borrow! if you can't afford it don't borrow! as simple as that. if the credit card in your wallet is a huge temptation, then get rid of it until you acquire discipline. you need to temper and hold yourself.

5. learn to negotiate. see your creditors regularly. assure them that you will pay faithfully but negotiate to reduce their interest rate. don't back down but use the power of persuasion. everything is negotiable. they are also human like us.

did you know that not all debts are bad?

two kinds of debts

1. bad debt. debt is considered bad if you buy things that take money away from your pocket. for example, Nene is a province girl who stopped from school and tried her luck in the metropolis to be a housekeeper. her motivation is to have her own cellphone rather than saving it for her tuition fee. she took a loan just to satisfy her want. now, the monthly load for the cellphone becomes another drain in her pocket.

2. good debt. debt is considered good if you buy things that put money into your pocket. let's take a look at the example above, if Nene converts her cellphone into a money making gadget by being a load provider then its a good debt especially if her income pays for the monthly amortization of the cellphone.

so next time you plan to take a loan, be sure that it's a good debt.

budgeting 101

the third part of our financial literacy seminar in SFC is budgeting 101.

here are some tips on how to take care of your finances.

1. give first the ten percent (10%) of your net monthly income (less tax) to God as tithes. this is a priority. remember it is God's money as discussed in our previous topic on financial stewardship. so don't focus on the 10%, but on the 90% we keep for yourself.

note: if the situation is really tight then you can ask for an excuse. you can give to God whatever amount you can. after all, what is important is the condition of your hearts when you give.

2. allot another ten percent (10%) to your retirement fund. why retirement fund? because you cannot just entrust your future from your Social Security System (SSS) or Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) monthly pension when you retire. it may not be enough to sustain your daily expenses specially your medication. remember, you may live longer than you expected. invest your retirement fund through long term financial vehicles such as mutual funds, bond funds, etc.

note: if your money is not enough to buy shares from mutual funds, you can save it first in your preferred bank or cooperatives. when your savings is enough then transfer it to financial institutions that offers financial management like mutual funds. whatever happens don't touch it. you should only use it when you retire.

3. again allot another ten percent (10%) for your emergency fund. this is to ensure that your retirement fund is safe from your emergency needs. put this to your preferred bank or cooperatives to maintain the liquidity of your money.

note: for emergency purposes, you will need at least six (6) times equivalent of your monthly income.

4. live on the remaining seventy percent (70%). yes, you read it right--live on the remaining 70% of your monthly income. you will need to prioritize your expenses. avoid unnecessary spending. delay self-gratification. learn to simplify your lifestyle. don't spend more than what you earn. that's suicide. if you think that you cannot do it, think again. if there's a will, there's a way. you must have will power, determination, discipline, patience and hard work.

note: if your expenses overshoot your budget and you still need to get more money to augment your expenses, try looking for other means. try selling anything. as long as it's legal and moral. remember, money problems are just mind problems. you can solve it.

5. ensure your family. your insurance is for your future needs if you live longer. but what if you die young or become physically handicapped? what will happen to your family? what will happen to those people that are dependent on you and your income? don't leave them helpless. if possible, get a life insurance to protect your family/dependents.

note: to compute on how much insurance that you really need to get, multiply your annual expenses by 10.
