I first met Richard Bustillo as a fledgling student at the Filipino KALI Academy in Torrance, Califironia in the 1970's. I had moved from Northern Wisconsin just to train at what was at the time the only full contact fighting school in the world. This was a fighter's school and needless to say I was more than a little intimidated at our first encounter. After all, here I was in a school filled with some of Bruce Lee"s original equipment in front of someone who had trained with Bruce. Richard quickly broke the ice and I came to realize that it was his "aloha spirit" that made him such a personable and effective teacher.

I remember Richard telling us what equipment to buy and what not to buy. What not to buy was when he said "Don't go out and buy a lot of fancy boxing gear. When we start to go to full contact sparring half of you will be gone. Don't waste your money. I can remember looking around at all the other students looking at all the other students. "Not Me", was the same thought in everyones mind. Six weeks later when we started sparring the class dropped by half. Then I remember Richard saying, "In a year there will only be 2-3 of you left. And in 2 years only 1 of you will be here. I was that "one" from my class.

I owe my entire career to my time at the Filipino KALI Academy with Richard and Dan. I was a starving student at the time and there were some months when I could not afford the $40.00 monthly dues. Luckily they let me clean the bathrooms in exchange for my dues. Well needless to say when we started training with knives, I was introduced to the Bali Song Knife. I was immediately fascinated with the knife and all of the maneuvers and manipulations so skillfully taught by Richard and Dan. Unfortunately I could not afford to buy one so I decided to make my own. With a hacksaw, hand drill, file and blowtorch, I made the first "Emerson" Knife. It was crude by anyone's standards but it worked and I found that there were other "poor" students at the academy. They in turn ask me to make butterfly knives for them. "You pay for materials, I"ll make you a knife" was all I asked. The rest they say is history. Today the Emerson Knife Company employes 100 employees to produce the popular Wave Blade and other special design knives. Emerson Knives are shipped to the elite military and special police internationally and domestically.

On a side note. I"ve been conducting training seminars over the last 20 years in edged weapon and counter edged weapons skills. I recently returned from London England where I was instructing. At the end of the first day we covered unarmed defense against the armed attack. I teach a technique, more of a reaction technique than not, that I call a pyramid jam upward and a pyramid jam downward, depending on where the attack is coming form. It is simply a Vee formed by your arms thrust above your head or a Vee thrust below and in front of your mid-section. The morning of the second day of the seminar one of the students came to me with this story. "My partner Kevin (who was in the class the first day) wanted me to tell you that he went on duty as a firefighter 2 hours after class and was called to a fire in a flat. We needed to break into the adjacent flat since no one seemed home. Kevin broke down the door and entered the residence. A guy came running at him with a butcher knife in his hand. He stabbed down and Kevin shot his hands up in a Vee and crashed into the assailant knocking him down. His partners tackled the guy and disarmed him. He wanted me to tell you Ernie, that this stuff really works!" I returned from London and guess who was the first person I called? Richard Bustillo. Guess what I told him? "Richard, This Stuff Really Works!" Richard had personally shown me this exact technique about a year ago and I believe that the London Firefighter is alive today because Richard Bustillo had shown and taught me this simple, direct and effective technique.

The Filipino KALI academy and Sifu Richard Bustillo are to this day a major influence in my daily activities, the way I live and the way I teach. These influences have become the soil into which I grew my roots and I am so thankful for the chance to have been under the "wing" of the Iron Dragon for the time that I was, and still am.

Respectfully, Ernest Emerson

Jaded Avery Michaels Do you agree with the direction JKD has taken since Lee"s death?

Jaded, It could be worst. I don"t agree nor disagree with the direction JKD has taken. I do the best that I can be and move on. Believe in your own direction and goal. Students forget the real reason why they first started martial arts practice. I"m positive it wasn"t for the politics nor dojo busting.

Michael Patrick Labrecque Which teaching of [Bruce Lee] do you consider the most important?

Michael, Being HONEST with ones self is very important. What works for you may not work for anyone else, or vice-versa. "The Individual is more important than any style or system." Be Safe - Be Training - Be Honest

Java Bomani Other than Bruce Lee. What single individual had the most influnce in shaping your martial life?

Java, Dan Inosanto was instrumental in my martial arts growth. For twenty years I was his training partner, his assistant, his business partner, an apprentice and best friend. However, without Bruce Lee there would no be Dan Inosanto.

Brian Garrett ask how he thinks Bruce would do against the UFC?

Brian, Bruce Lee would love the MMA in UFC. His Jeet Kune Do is to be well-round in all the combative ranges of martial arts. I truly believe Bruce Lee would adapt his training to the grappling arts of wrestling/Jiujitsu and win in his weight class, in his time. Remember, Bruce Lee would be 71 years today today.

Brett Jackson Why do most people consider JKD a style? when it falls under through definitions: JKD concept, blend, and the process. These 3 definitons was the main core of jkd. People thinking is always in the box and not outside of it.......""And 1 thing I want Sifu Bustillo to answer is this!""....what are your thoughts about the UFC? is it a cock fight between 2 men who wants too flaunt there ego"s and toughness, or the techniques you see can be used in a street fight? to me, it lacks variety and self-survival....

Brett, Why do most people consider JKD a style is the reason why Bruce Lee wished he didn"t named his art Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do is Bruce Lee"s personable approach to fighting for survival in an uncontrolled situation. His art is founded upon body mechanics, simplicity, effectiveness and adaptability. It is based on his concepts, principles, philosophies and personal training methods.

The MMA in UFC is for special individuals. Just as Triathlon is for special types of individuals. I agree with you. However, UFC is growing in comparison to the start of the John L. Sullivan boxing stage to the up to date improvements with time and experience.

Gary Castleberry Mr Bustillo, what is the single most important thing you learned from Sifu Lee. And, do you consider JKD a concept of what a complete Martial art should be OR a style within itself. Respect to you sir and all the best for the future.

Gary, The most important thing I"ve learned from Bruce Lee is Honesty. Every individual should honestly think for himself/herself, accepting only what works for himself/herself that makes good practical sense. "The Individual is more important than any style or system." Jeet Kune Do is Bruce Lee"s personable approach to fighting for survival in an uncontrolled situation. His art is founded upon body mechanics, simplicity, effectiveness and adaptability. It is based on his concepts, principles, philosophies and personal training methods.

Dear Sifu Bustillo,

It is an honor and a pleasure to tell you about two ways I believe I have strengthened my capacity to serve as Associate Instructor during the past year. I earnestly hope that these personal lessons bring integrity to my role as a representative of the IMB.

What I have learned through Training

Rather than rebelling against the breakdown of my body that aging brings, this year I am discovering that limitations can become a blessing in disguise. Instead of arguing with myself about what my kicks should be, I am finding what rhythm and intelligence can do in place of a kick. I am learning to take the strength from my opponent and use it as my own.

Like peeling the layers of an onion, I am learning new dimensions of why and how a technique works as I search to understand how I can execute it in my present body. More than at any time before, I under-stand the necessity to keep on keeping on with training. I am truly invigorated in my opportunity to train!

What I have learned through Teaching

This year, as in years before, it has been my honor to teach when Sensei Graqdy has been away. I appreciate the responsibility of maintaining the safety and healthy atmosphere of the IMB Family Martial Arts Center in Sensei Gradys absence, and truly love the opportunity to keep the learning alive until Sensei returns to guide us. I am grateful for the honor to serve in this way.

In comparison to the harmony of our dojo, a surprising place for the opportunity to teach the Way of the Warrior has been in my classroom. As you know, I teach 7th grade in a high poverty school, where our students are mostly African American with a growing Hispanic population. Gangs are ever present. Violence explodes at the drop of a hat. Usually, school doesnt feel like a very safe place.

At the start of the school year, I scrubbed my classroom, painted, hung curtains and posted a saying at the door: Dalpe Dojo place of the way of enlightenment Enter if are prepared to honor the safety, clean-illness and respect of our dojo. I was determined to create an environment where students would want to be. What I didnt know was how much they truly do want to be in a safe, clean and respectful place.

Through the course of this year, Ive learned more about the nature of violence my students live with, in the hallways and at home. Ive discovered that my classroom has become the counterbalance to that violence. I have worked to be the embodiment of the samurai warrior, living with integrity, compassion, and service. The students have responded. Discipline problems have nearly stopped. The more explosive the volatility among the students, the more centered and calm I have become.

Students, even those I dont teach, seek me out to say good morning or give me a hug. In the fall, the students voted me Favorite 7th Grade Teacher. This winter, the faculty voted me Teacher of the Year.

The martial arts are teaching me how to be a teacher. I am learning how to guide, rather than tell. I am learning how to find value rather than blame. I am becoming a better human being.

Thank you for your confidence in me as a martial artist and a teacher. I keep the responsibility for representing you, Sensei and the IMB in my mind at all times.

Sincerely, Margaret Dalpe
IMB of Charlotte, NC

Dear Sigung Richard Bustillo

I remember very clearly thru the many years as though it were yesterdaythe first meeting when you and Sigung Dan came to Seattle to pay your respects to our inimitable dear friends and hero the ultimate warrior, our brother, the great and inimitable, fun-loving down to earth Bruce Lee.
The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. (waiting for attack)

The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either... The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

1. Don"t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he"ll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him "Why do you carry a 45?" The Ranger responded, "Because they don"t make a 46."

6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. "Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?" "No Ma"am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun."

7. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

But wait, there"s more!

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said "Well I certainly hope it isn"t loaded!" To which I said, "of course it is loaded, can"t work without bullets!" She then asked, "Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?" My reply was, "No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too." To which I"ll add, having a gun in the house that isn"t loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

If guns kill people, then . . . Pencils miss spell words Cars make people drive drunk . . . Spoons made Rosie O"Donnell fat.
