Well, it had to happen sooner or later. My ProPhoto7 theme stopped working and now I have to go find a new theme and build a new website. They had said this was going to happen, but I didn’t want to change hosts or pay the inflated support fee, so I rode that horse as far as it was going to go. So now, to research and go in a new direction for the New Year.

I took Fall Sunrise on the Buffalo River on a late October day around 8:00 am. When we arrived at this location an hour or so earlier, the river valley was still full of early morning fog. It took an hour for that fog to burn off and the wait was well worth it, in my opinion.

This location was a short stroll from the Steel Creek Campground near Ponca in northwest Arkansas. With the fog burnt off, the early morning sunlight illuminates the karst limestone cliffs of the Roark Bluffs.

When I was there, the Buffalo River was perhaps 12 to 18 inches deep and easily wadeable. I don’t know that it’s always like that and the stones on the river bank suggest it’s often deeper and flowing faster. Still, with the conditions we experienced, setting up the tripod in the river allowed me to get this shot, a view I would not have had from the river bank.

This location is within the Buffalo National River park which was established in 1972. There are no entrance fees to the park but there are fees for overnight camping. The 135-mile (217-kilometer) river is one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the lower 48.

Hawksbill Crag on a Fall Afternoon is n image of the well-known rock formation, also known as Whitaker Point, in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness area of Arkansas. From the trailhead parking lot to the crag is a little under one and a half miles (a little under two and a half kilometers) and descends about 300 feet (one hundred meters).

The route back is the same but uphill. Be wary of the bluffs here as the fall is several hundred feet and would probably be fatal.

Fall Color

October is probably the best month to visit for peak fall color. I took this photo just before 5:00 pm and I recall it was dark when we got back to the car so I recommend you take a headlamp for hands-free illumination on the return trip. If it has rained recently the path can also be muddy so I’d advise hiking boots or waterproof shoes.

This is a view in an easterly direction so the sun is behind me. It can be a nice hike to set out in the early morning to get to Hawksbill Crag to watch the sunrise and burn off the fog in the valleys.

It’s fine to go stand on the rock, but there are no guardrails so be wary of getting too close to the edge.

This photo of the canal separating Churchill Place from the rest of Canary Wharf, joined only by an enclosed footbridge is my favorite from that location.

I shall remember this day though as the day my gallbladder attacked me. With the pain coming on late afternoon and running without letup through the night, early in the morning I went to A&E and my first experience in a long time with the NHS.

I was in A&E for about four hours before moving to a waiting room where I waited another four hours before an ultrasound confirmed my pain was gallbladder related. Then I waited another eight hours before a bed was available. The entire day passed with just water, no food. Not that I was really in the mood to eat.

I then spent the next three days in a ward with three other beds where the characters changed daily, desperately hoping the Consultant would let me return to the US on my scheduled flight, which he eventually did about 18 hours before takeoff.

Back in the US, I saw my Primary Care who sent me to a Surgeon, who put me on two rounds of antibiotics before I finally had my gallbladder removed. Ten days on from that and I’m feeling much better and now just waiting for my insurance company to approve the replacement of my left knee.
