Grand Master Narrie Babao was in Las Vegas 9/4/12 with his lovely wife Zena Sultana Babao celebrating 37 years of marriage. I was invited by Tuhan Lindsey Largusa to attend an informal get together of instructors and friends here in Las Vegas at a Starbucks coffee house.

Grand Master Babao Arnis system was named after the late Buenaventura “Turing” Babao, the late father and original Arnis teacher to (GM Narrie Babao). Master Turing learned the Batangas Baston system of Arnis from Ka Juan, who once rode with General Miguel Malvar, the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans in 1912.

At present, under the Babao Arnis system, he teache’s three separate systems: the Batangas Baston, the Villabrille-Largusa Kali, and the Cacoy Doce Pares Eskrido and Pangamot. Additionally, he teaches kuntao (empty hands), sikaran (kicking arts) and  panuntukan (Filipino boxing).

I would like to personally thank Tuhan Largusa for the invitation to meet GM Babao and the Master himself for sharing his knowledge of the Filipino history, culture and technique of his art.

What separates the art of Kali or FMA from many other styles and systems of Martial Arts is it’s use of destructions. In FMA the term “defanging the snake” is understood as the way to eliminate the opponents weapons. To defang, so the snake can not bite, is one of Kali’s most useful techniques. I remember classes with Dan Inosanto, when he would say ” Imagine Muhammad Ali with no legs or arms, all he would be is a stump, just bouncing around with no way of harming you”.  In FMA the practitioner knows hitting the opponents  hand will cause an immediate disarm, if he swings a weapon. Disarming  first, bends the fight in your favor. If you are armed and your opposition is not, odds of winning are now on your side of the encounter. In the Youtube Video we demo the use of the Gunting or scissor strike to the bicep. This technique stuns the muscle in the arm and makes it more difficult for the opponent to re-attack you with the same hand. If done correct it will produce numbness to the arm along with pain that will stop or slow down any further attacks. If you have a quick offensive  followup behind  the gunting, the opponent may not be able to defend your attack. If this method is used in MMA, I can see them changing the rules in a heart beat. It’s not sport, but good selfdefense.

Guro Richard Lamoureaux & Sifu Jack Soderberg with GM Wai Lun Choi

The two day seminar held for Grand Master Wai Lun Choi was an exciting experience for all that attended. Students from as far away as Canada stop in to see the Grand Master work his craft. GM Choi is the linage holder to the rare Kung Fu System of Lui Ho Pa Fa. I was introduced to Sifu Choi back in 1980 by Sifu Jack Soderberg at the Peak Congress Hotel in Chicago. All I can say is Master Choi can deliver the goods at his ripe young age of 72. His seminar covered many aspects of the martial arts from movement, postion and breathing to applacation and philosophy. It was nice to see him again for it’s been 25 years for me. The last time I saw Sifu he bounced me 8 feet through the air.

Inosanto’s backyard gym in 1973, before the opening of the Filipino Kali Academy in Torrance California. Many of Dan’s early student’s trained here. Ted Lucay Lucay, Chris Kent, Tackett and Poteet to name a few. This gym was in Dan’s backyard behind his house. It just goes to show that the school can be anywhere. The people in the arts are more important then the building with four walls. I’m sure the old crew have some great stories to tell that took place in this gym.

Paul and I go way back to the mid 80’s. I was introduced to him through Dan Inosanto. I trained with Paul before and after his commission with Navy Seal Team Six. The Filipino Martial Arts have crossed many lines, movies, football,  special law enforcement groups and the military. So by no surprise, why not the WWE. The individual bringing it to center ring, is none other than big Dave Batista. Batista is a body builder, actor, but best known for his time in the WWE. Dave is also a Filipino who has found an interest in Filipino Martial Arts and is working on fighting in the UFC. He currenty trains with Marrese Crump who is also a martial artist and actor. Dave is training different styles of  martial arts for the octagon but seems to have a passion for FMA. All I can say is good luck to him in his UFC interested and it is great that he is training and promoting the Kali.

Grand Master of the  Liu Ho Pa Fa system of Kung-Fu, Wai Lun Choi will be in Las Vagas on the 6th and 7th of Aug. The seminar will be hosted by Sifu  Dan Tafoya and will be held at the Gardens Park in Summerlin. Contact Dan at (702) 592-6949 for all the details regarding the seminar. I had the privilege of meeting Master Choi back in 1980 at the Peak Congress hotel in Chicago, during a demonstration of his martial art of Liu Ho Pa Fa. At the time I was a  student under sifu Jack Soderberg and it was he who invited me to meet his Master. Wai Lun Choi is by far an expert in Kung Fu.

In the early 80’s Dan Inosanto trained with Master Choi as a private student. One day I ask Guro Dan what he thought of Master Choi and his Kung Fu. Dan said to me ” Rich I rate him in the top 5″ So I said, Dan, that is a nice complement for top 5 in the U.S.A. Inosanto look at me and said, “no Rich, he is in the top 5 in the world”.

In 1971, Wai Lun Choi, as part of the Hong Kong delegation, participated in the Southeast Asian Hand-to-Hand Martial Arts Tournament. This was the premier martial tournament lasting eight days. On the fourth day of competition, Wai Lun would go up against the reining champion, Wong Chai Leung, nickname “Crazy Horse”. A reporter for the Singapore News described the intensity of the fight. “Choi’s strikes were resounding over the audience making each move a potential lethal end to this competition”

THE BLADED HAND

The Bladed Hand is in it’s final stages of production before it is released. The premire is planned to be held in Manila in August of this year. Dan Inosanto, Diana Lee Inosanto, Remy Presas Jr and Ron Balicki are among some of the Instructors in the film. The documetary will cover many styles and systems of Kali, Eskrima and Arnis.  History, Technique and Culture will all be part of this documetary. The film was shoot here in the U.S. as while as the Phillipines.

Rich, Ron Balicki and Diana Lee Inosanto

Ron was in Las Vegas to conduct demo’s for Cold Steel Knives. He came in a day before to do a seminar on Kali/Silat at the Summerlin Gardens Park. I have not seen Ron in almost 11 years and it was great to reconnect with and old friend and comrade in the arts. Both of us come from the same linage in our Kali/JKD training as well as the windy city of Chicago. Ron is an outstanding instructor and I’m sure Mr I is proud of  his son in law and daughter for keeping FMA alive and well. I wish him and his lovely wife Diana, the very best and continued success in all the ventures life has to offer.

GM Gaje holds the rights to the system of Pekiti–Tirsia. He has trained such notable instructors as Dan Inosanto. His system focuses on stick and blade fighting but his specialty is the use of the knife. Tang Soo Do Grand Master Hwang Kee

The first style of martial Art that I trained in  was Tang Soo Do. I was introduced to this system in 1965. My school friend at the time was the son of my instructor. I was enrolled because of my friendship. The cost for lessons unlimited in the mid 60’s was $15.00 a month. My instructor was Sa Bom Nim Raymond Soon.

I trained at the academy six days a week and would attend competitions on Sundays. I kept this routine up for five years. I was awarded my Black Belt in 1970, at the age of 12,  in this system, at that time, a dark Blue Belt represented a Black for this style.

Chuck Norris made this system popular in U.S.A. in the early 1960’s and was known in tournaments for his spinning back hook kick. Many of the spin kicking techniques that Bruce Lee used in his films comes from this style. Chuck Norris was a friend, student and training partner of the late Bruce Lee.  He once told me that when they first met, they talk for hours about the martal arts and the different styles of kicking.  Bruce Lee already had in his method of fighting (Jeet Kune Do), kicking technique’s from Northen Style Gung Fu but added in the kicking style’s of  Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do.

Ed Parkers Midwest Regionals Tournament 1980

This tournament was held once a year and was hosted by Kenpo Instructor Lee Wedlake. I would compete in the competition and also attend Ed Parkers seminars on Advanced Karate Theorys. Parker help the Martial Arts become popular during the late 50’s and early 60’s. It was at his International Tournament in 1966 that Bruce Lee was discovered for the Green Hornet show.

During the time frame that I trained with Guro Inosanto he was a student of  many silat systems. Most of his masters did not want the public to see some of the more advance parts of these arts. Guro Dan, to fill in the blanks would mix the silat he was allowed to show with his Kali. In the early 80’s, the art he taught was called Sikal. Today Dan not only teaches the complete systems of these arts but still will blend them together. The term use today by Inosanto is Maphilindo Silat. The Youtube video demonstates Inosantos Silat.

You will be equipped to compete in a modern-day contest of courage and skill that will, win or lose, bring you as close to those brutal matches of old as you can get. Full-contact, no-holds-barred competition that utilizes weapons without benefit of protective armor. Matches that resulted in permanent injury and disability, not just to one combatant but often both. A brutal test of skill and courage that for on participant ended all to frequently in death.

Kali stickfighting was banned in this original form by U.S. forces occupying the Philippines during World War II. Kali stickboxing, a modified version of those matches fought by the escrimadors and kalista of old, continues today, perhaps not as lethal, but just as demanding and exciting.  Originally, matches allowed participants the use of sticks called “bahi” or “kamagoon”. These sticks made from ironwood, a wood heavier and harder than rattan training sticks used both then and today, were fashioned by the kalista into the shape of a sword.

In contrast to the baston used in today’s stickboxing, these early versions had in effect two striking surfaces, the flat, broad face and the narrow knife-like edge, either of which was capable of inflicting severe injury upon one’s opponent. Unlike those of old, today’s practitioners, in addition to their skills and courage, rely on lightweight armor for protection. What survives basically intact, however, from the art’s original form, are its rules and procedures, its techniques and methods.

Credit for the modern design of kali stickboxing belongs to guro Ted LucayLucay, son of the late Lucky LucayLucay, who has furthered his father’s kali and boxing method through the implementation of new training procedures of his own. Unlike other escrima systems, in kali boxing the stick work although an important component, is but one element of the overall method of attack and defense. At the core of this system lies the body mechanics of boxing. When using any weapon, one well-placed strike could conceivably end a life, so in addition to taking a true and realistic approach to the art, today’s practitioner must also factor in safety during training and in actual competition.

Equipment training is an essential element in the development of the stickboxer’s skills. Guro Ted Lucaylucay demonstrates (1-2) how to use the heavybag in conjunction with the stick.

The kali boxer now uses a 29-inch long cylindrical nylon stick padded with canvas. Headgear used consists of a wire mesh face cage attached to boxing-style headgear or a hockey-type helmet. The weapon hand is protected by a padded glove. The other hand is gloved as well for both blocking and punching. Elbow pads are used but most often knee pads are not because of the limitations they place on mobility. Offensive knee strikes, though legal, are delivered at less than full power, with the objective being not to injure but to score points. The weapon is held in the lead hand. Strikes can be delivered with the tip, the center and the butt of the stick as well as with the hand that grips it. The rear hand is used extensively as an offensive weapon in conjunction with both elbows and knees.

Forty percent of the knockouts in real stickfights where credited to the use of the rear hand.

Various tools come into play at various ranges. At long range are kicks and strikes with the end of the stick. At middle range are hits with the center of the stick, punches from either hands or elbow and knee techniques. Close range allows for puno strikes, head butts, throws, takedowns, and ground fighting procedures where submission holds can be utilized.

The on-guard position of the kali stickboxer resembles the posture of the Western boxer.

Unlike the old form where fighting continued until one combatant is either disabled or dead, in current competition fights consist of rounds timed at either two or three minutes depending on the class and skill level of the fighters.

Focus mitts are used extensively in the kali boxer’s preparatory training. Here we see guro Ted closing the gap with the stick jab and following up with the cross and flip/hit combination.

The number of rounds to be fought and allowable target areas are pre-determined prior to each match. A clinch or grappling situation, whether in a standing position or on the ground or even the loss of a weapon, are not cause for a break. The fighting continues until the sound of the bell or until a victor is declared. A winner can be decided in several ways; through an accumulation of points scored by strikes to legal target areas, through the inability of one opponent to answer the bell, by submissions or lastly by TKO or knockout.

Endurance, stamina and cardiovascular conditioning are attributes that a kali boxer must bring with him to the ring. Fatigue sets in rapidly if you have not prepared to spar with a stick. The use of the heavy bag, speed bag and focus mitts plays an important role in preparing the stickboxing. Grip strength and the ability to properly hold and maintain the weapon are of paramount importance. Lose your weapon and you will most likely lose that round, if not the match itself. In the old days, loss of one’s weapon more often than not equated to loss of one’s life.

Although not geared toward all martial artists, kali stickboxing has much to offer. As a practiced stickboxer you will realize an elevated skill level of the attributes that you brought with you, along with having acquired some new techniques unique to this style. You will be equipped to compete in a modern-day contest of courage and skill that will, win or lose, bring you as close to those brutal matches of old as you can get, and still live to fight another day.

This Kali technique is a GunTing. Also known as a scissor strike to the bicep using the pocket stick.

Richard Lamoureaux & Renzo Gracie 1994. In 1991 I started training brazilian jiu-jitsu. Paul Vunak was the first instructor to introduce me to this system.  I was fortunate enough to train with two of the Gracies from Brasil (Renzo & Rickson) before they were hugely popular in the USA. This photo was taken at  a seminar in chicago hosted by Joe Goytia. This was the first time Renzo Gracie did a seminar outside of New York. This was also the first time Pat Militech was introduced and trained in the art of brazilian jiu-jitsu. The following year 1995, Pat won the Battle of The Masters In Chicago. My good friend Joe Goytia was responsible for introducing Pat to Jiu-Jitsu and his first MMA competition.

Upon completion of a Kali / JKD seminar that i instructed at the basyside academy of martial arts in New Jersey i took a private class in Doce Pares from Grand Master Dong Cuesta. At this time in the USA, Dong Cuesta was the second highest ranked Doce Pares Instructor in the USA. He was second to only GM Cacoy Canete.

Rich Lamoureaux Lama Kung Fu School Chicago, IL 1979. Sifu Jack Soderberg’s first commercial school in Chicago, IL back in 1980. Rich trained under Sifu Jack and recieved his black sash in Lama kung-fu. The Tibetan Lama Kung Fu style was developed 500 years ago during the Sung Dynasty. It is known for it’s long range striking technique’s and evasive footwork.

Here is another great clip from the movie Eskrimadors. I highly recommend you watch this movie! This film gives the history and fighting systems of Eskrima. I trained with GM Diony Canete back in 1986 who is featured in this film along with his Black Belt instructor Glen Dahms. In 1986, in the U.S. Doce Pares was known by very few.

Eskrima training sticks are usually made out of Rattan, which is an inexpensive and durable wood that comes from a vine. Rattan is very light, highly durable, and tends to stay together and not splinter. Since it does not shred easily it is a fantastic material for training sticks. There as another type of wood called Kamagong which is much harder than Rattan, however, its too dense for training application since it can cause such serious injury. Kamagong sticks would generally be reserved as actual self defense sticks since they are so strong. Escrima sticks vary in length depending on the system being trained as well as the specific range being trained. Length could vary but the most commom stick length is between 24 to 36 inches.
