About our Juror:
“Ruben Nieto, (born in Guantajuato, Mexico) is a UT Dallas doctoral candidate and artist in residence at Centraltrak. He has re-imagined his childhood love for comic books with a new engaging perspective translated through his works of art. He transforms the comic book into highly energetic and visceral paintings which re-contextualize the imagery. He spent hours researching the history of comic books both from a political and creative perspective, the history of text, Andy Warhol, and techniques of Master painters like Millet.” ~ Arts and Culture Magazine interview

Projecting digital video and light onto ceramic forms, the Pennsylvania based artists offer a reexamination of traditional media and a restructuring of gallery usage. Erecting several walls and blacking out windows, the installation engages interior/exterior dynamics, requiring audience members to disrupt lighting patterns and projections as they navigate the re-situated space.

EMPTY BOWLS

Friday, March 9, 2012, 11:00 a.m. — 1:00 p.m.
Meyerson Symphony Center, 2301 Flora St. Dallas, TX 75201

“Empty Bowls began as a small fundraising project that has now grown into a worldwide fundraising event. In 1990, a group of Michigan high school students, along with their art teacher, began actively searching for a unique way to help end hunger. After many ideas, they settled on a fundraiser where people of all kinds would be able to enjoy a simple meal of soup and bread served in a decorative ceramic bowl. Guests of the event were asked to keep the bowl as a reminder of those who suffer from hunger. Empty Bowls events are now held all over the world and have raised millions of dollars toward the fight against hunger.

“Empty Bowls is unique in that it does not have headquarters, directors, or guidelines. Each city’s event is a unique experience unmatched by any other. The Dallas chapter of Empty Bowls was started up by John Williams, potter and former owner of Trinity Ceramic Supply Inc., and his wife Darlene Williams. Thanks to the hard work of John, Darlene, and everyone involved, Empty Bowls has grown into a successful event in the heart of Dallas. Dallas’ Empty Bowls has benefitted countless North Texans in need, providing 2.5 million meals over the last twelve years!”

Richland College is pleased to present renowned photographer Jock Sturges at 7 p.m. on March 8 in the Fannin Performance Hall (f102).

Richland College continues its commitment to excellence in photography by bringing world-class photographers to campus to interact with students over the course of a day concluding with a free public lecture, reception and book-signing. Past participants in this distinguished series include Ralph Gibson, Mary Ellen Mark, Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor, Joyce Tenneson, Keith Carter, and Arno Minkkinen. Sturges, known for his sublime photographs of the female nude, will address ideas of beauty and biography in art. This presentation will contain images that may not be suitable for younger or more sensitive audiences.

Sturges’ talk at Richland College will draw on the wider cultural and academic context of his photography, grounding his work in the history of art, while delving into his interests in perceptual psychology and anthropology. For Sturges, it is important to understand, “how vital it is for aspiring artists in any medium to be well and broadly educated in art history specifically and in all culture more generally.”

Sturges, a highly published and exhibited photographer, received his BFA from Marlboro College in 1974 and his MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1985. Currently he is working as a fine art photographer in California, Washington state, Ireland, The Netherlands, and the Atlantic coast of France. He is also a commercial freelance photographer specializing in fashion and classical dance and a contributing editor to various photography magazines. Locally, he had a solo exhibition at Photographs Do Not Bend in Dallas in 2001. His most recent monograph, Notes, as well his earlier acclaimed books, The Last Days of Summer and Radiant Identities, will be available for sale at the book signing.

Delving into their practice as a both a conceptual and physical interaction with sites as a way to blur boundaries, the artists delivered a novel approach to art through research and a holistic, long term approach to our current time period and possible futures. The artists answered several questions from the audience, generating an insightful discourse into possibilities.
