Campaign it and Frame it!

I used to hate gold. If it was gold I was spray painting it. Something has come over me, though, and all I find my self thinking about is gold, gold, gold. I'm buying gold stuff with the intention of leaving it gold and I'm even purposely painting things gold! My mom emailed me this House Beautiful brass frame knockoff project from A Thoughtful Place...

...and I knew I had to try it (feeds right into my love of campaign style furniture!) But because you all know how ~~lazy~~ time efficient I am....I tweaked it a little (bagged the spray painted masking tape she used) so I had to put as little effort out as humanly possible.

Can everyone say Rub 'n Buff!!!

I used a piece of paper as my guide to where to mark my lines (pretend I'm holding that pen with my right hand instead of the camera and marking the frame...another arm would really come in handy in more ways than one around here ;)....

Then taped off ...

I rubbed my fave Rub 'n Buff in Gold Leaf in the taped off area...

And in literally minutes you get a fun little blinged out look with little time or money.

It's a subtle change but a fun little project if you have a tube of Rub 'n Buff and about 10 minutes!

I made sure to go around the corners too.

Oh and did you notice I moved the drawers around in a checker board fashion on the card catalog! I'm kind of loving the look and think I may keep it like this for a bit. Seems more authentic to me than painting it...at least for the time being. And this photo reminds me I still need a BETTER FITTING LAMP for that area.

Starburst Mirror on the Cheap!

Fellow Richmonder,very talented decorator, and hysterically funner blogger Julia over at Pawley's Island Posh tipped me off to this great starburst mirror. It's surprisingly from Home Depot! The price is so great too! At $35 its a no brainer.

I immediately got online and ordered one to pick up in my local store. Searching Home Depot with my active two year old doesn't usually end well so I figured if they had it waiting for me it would be my first successful trip to the Depot and probably a record setting time! And because I'm a weirdo and possible hoarder I ordered two just in case!

I wasn't sure where it would land in my house and tried it out in a few places but decided over the bed in our master was the winner. Here it is with some Tarjay pillows, lampshades, JCPenny ruffle duvet and a peacock pillow and throw from Pier 1. They have a $10 off 50 coupon here but it expires today :(

Love how it ties in the gold in my dresser and map drawer projects I recently completed.

Best Intentions

I had the best intentions to try and finish up this bar during the kids nap time today. It's been hanging around the garage way to long and I had hoped to make it pretty today but.... guess who has strep throat! Your truly. Soooooo, instead I'm going to take a nap since I was up all night last night with what felt like knives in my throat. Plus it's a little rainy here so I guess it wasn't meant to be!

This is what I got accomplished yesterday. Primed and ready to go. Did you notice the hardware has almost disappeared. Well my laziness got the best of me yesterday and I didn't tape it off. I've actually convinced myself its a good thing since I'm going to be rub n buffing the hardware a pretty gold leaf anyway. We shall see. It may be something I regret in the future but I'm keeping my fingers crossed it actually helps the rub n buff stick better. Oh and a little while back I also added casters to the bottom so its a mobile bar, because who doesn't love a traveling cart of alcoholic goodness!?!?!

I'm going to be using the paint I have left over from this project, a purdy peacock blue.

Downsizing

It's been a good run but after a lot of thought I've decided to shut down my space at Through the Garden Gate. Having two spaces ended up being more work than I was really ready for and when we started doing our taxes for this year the profit I was going to make was not enough to keep it going. I'm sad cause I love that place and will continue to shop there for sure, but it is a relief to know I just have my little square of space to fill at Class and Trash. The rest of my time can be spent focusing on my kiddos and husband. And think of all the brain cells I'm going to save by not having to spray paint so much furniture! I really have few to spare so that's a big plus ;)

So I'm having a sale to try and get rid of most of my stuff as to not have to move out a bunch of items. My entire booth is 30% off. I highlighted some of my favorite items below.

Card Catalog Finds a Home.

I think I've found a home for the card catalog but need to make some more changes. I've searched the whole house and attic for a better fitting lamp but couldn't find one here so I'm thinking I need to make a trip to Hobby Lobby or Home Goods for that. Something smaller for sure.

Wanted to give you a look from farther away but the sun coming in makes it not such a great shot.

First of all, thank you to anyone who ran out and picked up my Class and Trash stuff from my last drop off post. It's such a thrill to know people are bringing my finds into their homes. Makes this little hobby of mine so exciting, so a big THANK YOU!

Okay, now on to the big reveal. Like the title of this post says, I feel like I have won the lottery! Remember my tease from Friday...

Well here is a clearer picture!

AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! Unless it wasn't sitting in my house right now I wouldn't believe it! A real life card catalog. The thing I have been chasing but never caught for the past year or two. And listen to how I came to own one. Remember my friend "Diane" who redid her dining room with a teensy bit of help from me and a whole lot of hard work from her....

Well do you also remember she purchased two card catalogs at an auction in CT a while back. Guess who got the other one! And listen to this! She refused to let me pay her for it and instead wants me to help her with another room in her house. I think she must be smoking the wacky tobacky. Can you even imagine.

If you live in CT, heck, if you live anywhere near Connecticut you need to find "Diane" and beg her to be your friend! She is THE most generous person! I mean, do you know anyone who would give away a card catalog?!?! Me neither! Well, actually I do! But you know what I mean!

So I don't know yet what I'm going to do paint wise or where I'm going to put this pretty lady. I feel so much pressure to get it right so I want to live with it in a few places first before I get to painting it. Okay, I'm off to stare at my card catalog a little bit more ;) Hope everyone had a great weekend!!!

Master Update

I thinks its kind of funny when people ask me advice about decorating a room because I really have no business doing it! I have no training and really just know how to paint furniture...but my friend Kristin asked for some ideas on her master so I thought I would blog about it and get some of your thoughts as well!

Here is her BEFORE:

She is going to paint the dressers white, she thinks. I kind of like the look of the nightstands and not having everything matchy matchy so I suggested maybe leaving those as is.

She has a ceiling fan that she is going to take down and I think a chandy would look great there instead to dress it up a bit. Maybe something like this capiz one from World Market

I recommended maybe adding another curtain to each window. I feel like it would soften everything a bit. Maybe add a grosgrain ribbon trim to them too if you want to get flashy ;)

Maybe put a fun mirror over top of the tall dresser to fill the space.

This is her pretty new bedding!

She wants to change the paint color to a lighter, brighter, blue/gray color. She also wants to keep the curtains and the bed skirt in the brown. So here are a few inspirational ideas.

I LOVE this one! Love the wall color, the look of the frames above the bed, the splash of color with the coral pillow and the throw at the bottom of the bed.

Like the look of the black furniture too, another option. And love the frames over the dresser (but not with frames over the bed too! Pick one or the other.)

Coffee Table Snazz Up

I found this unfortunate light oak colored coffee table at goodwill a while ago and thought it would be a perfectly decent table if given a coat of paint. After hanging out in my garage for several months and making friends with the other furniture waiting patiently to be tackled it went from this......

To this.....

I sanded it then applied a coat of Zinsser OIL based primer. Because I'm SUPER ~~lazy~~ time efficient I sprayed the legs with the spray variety and rolled the top with the canned version of the primer. You can see in the before shot I forget to snap a pic before I got started and already sprayed the legs.

Then I painted it in a nice semi-gloss black. I like the Behr Ultra from Home Depot. The top took 3 coats. I took the hand sander to give it a distressed look. After that you can see the white primer and if you like that look then you could stop there but I like it to look brown in the distressed spots so I have a stain pen like this:

And I go back over the white with the pen and it magically turns brown! Then I protected the finish with Minwax OIL based Rub on Poly. Hope you like!

I will be putting it for sale in one of my booths but it's still a tiny bit tacky from the poly and want that to completely dry.

It's called Lee Valley and Veritas Hardware Catalog. Pretty risque, huh! If you dream of owning a card catalog or campaign dresser this mag is going to make your heart beat a little faster. Goodwill Coupon-OOPS!

So the crumby weather must be messing with my head because Alison from richmondbargains.com just emailed me and in the sweetest possible way told me I'm losing it ;) Actually she didn't say that, she just kindly let me know that this was from LAST YEAR!!! No wonder the woman at the register seemed like she had never seen it!!! I guess neither of us read the fine print. I will have to make a bigger donation next time I go there to repay them their 20%. Sorry if I got anyone's thrifty hopes up! I imagine one will be coming soon though because this came out during Valentine's Day last year. I'll be sure to post it when it's legit.

As I was checking out at Goodwill today I overhead the cashier ask the girl in front of me if she had any coupons. So I frantically got my iPhone out and googled "Goodwill Coupons Richmond" and my friend over at http://www.richmondbargains.com/ had a link to a coupon! Thanks Alison!

Military Trunk turned Coffee Table

Do you all remember the military trunk I bought a while back at Class and Trash. Well since I'm ~~being really lazy~~ in the middle of a few projects and don't have a current before and after I remembered I don't think I ever showed you all what I ended up doing with this.

Here is the military gun box the day I bought it...

This is how it looked after cleaning it with some white vinegar...

I love that it says "Automatic Gun" on it. Closest thing I'll ever get to one!

I finished it off with some Tung Oil a reader recommended.

This is what it is supposed to do:

Penetrates deep into wood pores. Restores richness and vitality. Provides durable hand rubbed luster. It gave it a nice finish and I was very happy I tried it out!

I added some casters I got at home depot for about $5 each. They have locks on them so if you want to put your feet up it wouldn't roll away!

I'm happy to say it sold recently at my Through the Garden Gate space. Thank you to whoever bought it :)

I'm putting the finishing touches on my old boat I bought a million years ago so hope to have that on here soon! Hope everyone is having a great day!

Hairy Legs...

I mean, HairPIN legs....much cuter than hairy legs!

I wanted to share my source for the hairpin legs I used for my map drawer redo because I loved them and feel like they are really affordable compared to others I found.

Here's a reminder of my map drawer project and the pretty hairpin legs I used:

I got them from an ebay shop http://www.ebay.com/sch/nina_lynne/m.html She can do custom sizes too which is so fabulous in case you have a specific size you want that is not listed. That's what I did for the map drawer project. They came quickly and were sooooooo easy to attach. I will definitely be using her again. Here is a little inspiration in case you love these as much as I do!

I think I want to do this next! Get a piece of scrap wood, in this case an old joist from a scrap yard, and simply attach some legs! Such character! This was the only picture of the finished product. Not sure what to think about the dog ;) But love the console table!

Slacker!

Sorry I've been a bit of a slacker this week! We were out of town but..... I'm back! Found a fun campaign bar yesterday I wanted to show you. The pictures are horrid because it is still in my trunk but I hope you can kind of see what it looks like.

This picture is upside down...so that is the top that opens for more space to spread out the liquid personality!

It needs some serious TLC. I'm thinking I'm going to paint it the same color I used for my dresser, the peacock blue, and rub and buff the hardware to make it a little more glam. Once I get my strong and burly husband to help me get it out of the car I will post better picks.

Before and After: Map Drawers

Do you all remember this from a long while back.

I bought it from Class and Trash and wasn't sure exactly what to do with it but knew I needed it!

I think it might be where old maps or blueprints were stored. It looks like it may have survived a flood or something too.

Well I finally got my fanny in gear and did something about it and here is the after:

I sanded the piece and then stained it using this.

I used the always fabulous rub n buff for the hardware to give it a little glam.

I added this gorgeous paper from World Market. They have the prettiest paper there! Their online selection is fabulous! And for $3 a roll I think it adds the perfect touch!

I'm going to use it to store jewelry. The drawers seem perfect for that!

I also added some hairpin legs to the bottom. They were SUPER easy to attach, just a few screws and they were on!

Hope you all like! I'm using it as a side table next to a chair in our master.

I finally have a redo project to show you, although my crafty mom deserves all the props (hence the reason she gets the bamboo Chippendale chair from the last post!). Remember my galvanized tub from a WHILE back. I wanted to add a tufted top and turn it into an ottoman.

Well here is a reminder:

I wanted the top to come off for storage inside because who doesn't need extra storage!?!

I put about 5 screws (leave the screw sticking way up) around the inside to keep it from sliding off if someone puts their feet on it. I'm not explaining that very well but hopefully you get the gist.

I'm really happy with how it turned out but have no where to put it so... I will be putting it for sale in one of my booths whenever I can shake my kids and get over there alone.

Getting my fix!

So it's been a few days since I was out goodwill hunting with the holidays and all and I was starting to get the shakes. I had to run out and finish some last minute gift getting for someone on my list and just so happened to be passing by a Goodwill. I'd left my husband with the kids for what he thought was a quick shopping trip so I had to make it snappy!

I wasn't even going to go in but I'm sooooooo glad I did! Look what I found!!!!

Can I get a Hells Yeah!!!

This Chippendale arm chair was $15. I was so excited normally I just rip the tag off (to claim it as mine) and continue shopping but it was too risky! I carried that thing around as I continued shopping just to make sure no one could gank it from me!!!

I'm giving this to my mom for Christmas to maybe go with her campaign desk she redid a while back... because who doesn't want a $15 used chair from a possibly germ and bug invested house under their Christmas tree!?!?! I kid, I think she's going to pass out when she sees it and since she loves a good deal just as much as the rest of us it will make the gift even sweeter!

And because you may not believe this insane price I included a pic of the tag because if I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't believe me either!!!
