'Bruno' Review

“Bruno” has enough gay heat to toast a Pop Tart in the Pope’s ass. Clad in sequin thongs, soaked in glitter and always accompanied by bad techno tracks, our title character is the stuff of Catholics’ nightmares. Dan Brown can finally step aside. Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest half-baked, half-faked documentary has a lot in common with the phallic sex toys that co-star with our flamboyant Austrian fashion show host: It’s simultaneously fake and shocking. (Oh, and don’t worry, there are plenty real schlong shots, too.) “Bruno” is also wildly entertaining, in case you’re wondering. But here’s the question you really want ...

So I’ve been pretty lazy when it comes to restaurant news lately. And when I say lazy, I mean busy. And taking a lot of vacation. And I’ve been lazy too.Still, just because I haven’t been out pounding the pavement and culling through the archives of business licenses doesn’t mean that other people haven’t been doing it. So I bring you the best of new restaurants news that I feel ethically bound to disclose came from other sources.
This is a good show; this is a great show. My guest, Greg Dawson, author of “Hiding in the Spotlight,” tells an incredible story about Holocaust survival. His mother Zhanna Arshanskaya and aunt, Frina Arshanskaya, were 14 and 12 years old when Hitler’s army stormed through their small town in the Ukraine. They were told to pack their bags and meet the killing squads at the town square. Zhanna escaped execution with only the clothes on her back and the sheet music for Chopin’s Fantasy Impromptu folded in her pocket. Finding refuge at the home of a former classmate, she ...

Ever since Jerry Springer introduced his first KKK-member, cousin' lovin' guest eons ago, rabid TV fans have been shaking their fists at their 17-inch TVs and letting out gut-busting BOOOs! After a long day of work and a half-cooked Hungry Man dinner, it's fun to find villains on TV - and take out your anger on them. (Just don't head butt your flatscreen; new technology can't take blunt force trauma like the bulletproof sets from the days of yore.)Here are the summer TV stars getting booed ... some deservedly more so than others.1. “NYC Prep” Kids are so old these ...

Luxe Life at Lemaire

The ugly duckling to swan transition is a common movie plot. Think of Anne Hathaway as the disheveled ingénue in “The Devil Wears Prada” or Nia Vardalos’ portrayal of a frumpy young woman who dresses older than her years in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” These two actresses entered as wallflowers and exited as beauties by the end of their respective films. After a lengthy a wardrobe change, and some MGM-style soul searching, this is what has happened to Lemaire. In recent years, Lemaire has been the smart, but overlooked Hathaway and the prematurely dated Vardalos. The restaurant’s interior was stuffy, ...

All is right in the world of cycling now that Lance Armstrong is back in contention at the Tour de France. Definitely check out the exciting details on TimesDispatch.com... Far from being old and wobbly, Lance has shown himself to be smarter and stronger than ever. Not only that, but it's a great indication of what a fantastic lifetime sport cycling can be. What's interesting for our perspective is the role that Richmond played in his early development. Suffice it to say that Richmond-based Medalist Sports, which promoted the Tour DuPont from '91 to '96 gave Lance the chance to be with the right people at the right ...

Sometimes there is confusion over the distinction of the Richmond SPCA’s role as a private, non-profit humane society and that of the municipal animal control facilities. The good Samaritans who find stray pets and want to help them often don’t immediately understand those roles. While the Richmond SPCA provides care for hundreds of formerly stray animals every year – about 60 percent of the homeless pets we care for are ones we transferred into our care from local government shelters in the City of Richmond and the counties of Hanover, Henrico, Goochland and Chesterfield, and most were strays before ...

What does it take to be crowned the "Ugliest Dog in the World"? Well, obviously a scrunched up face, small floppy ears, and an under bite. That pretty much describes the face of Pabst, a 4 year old boxer-mix who was awarded the crown. Pabst, who was rescued from a shelter in California by Miles Egstad, won the annual award on Friday at the Sonoma Marin Fair in Northern California. Along with the title of World’s Ugliest Dog, he received $1600 in prize money, pet supplies and a modeling contract with House of Dog.
Green Wine is a Summer Sensation

Incredibly fragrant, slightly fizzy and lighter in alcohol than many other wines, vinho verde is the quintessential summer quaff. Vinho verde, meaning “green wine” is a young wine from the Vinho Verde DO (Denomination of Origin) in NW Portugal. It is usually released the spring after the grapes are harvested, so look for 2008 bottles on a retail shelf. The Portuguese make both red and white vinho verde, but it is the whites that are readily available in our market. Most of the reds are not exported. A wide variety of Portuguese grapes are used in the production ...

This past week I hosted not just one but TWO blogger tours at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Not only did I get to meet some new friends, but I also got to meet some folks that I've known for a while, but only through social media. I had a great time showing the bloggers and their kids around the Garden. And both days we were blessed with a beautiful mornings. Here is a round up of the coverage: Kate Hall from Richmondmom.com brought her sweet, sweet daughter on the tour and wrote a very entertaining report on Lewis Ginter -- ...

Yeah, I was here last week…So what? People get hungry. Anyway, Denny’s before 10 a.m. during the week is a sad place. Actually, Denny’s at any point in the day is a sad place but especially so before 10 a.m. Everyone seems beaten down.
I have not been at the Richmond SPCA for a very long time, but as I read various shelter and humane publications I have seen it stated that July 5 is possibly the busiest day of the year for facilities acquiring lost pets. It is worth mentioning again that even the most laid back pet may become anxious and startled enough – with all the noise and commotion – to escape and get lost on the Fourth of July and the days surrounding its festivities. Heed the advice to keep them confined, safe and accounted for during this holiday weekend. ...

'Public Enemies' Movie Review

The cat and mouse game played by the world's most prolific bank robber and the first big-time FBI agent isn't worth a slice of government cheese. "Public Enemies" is a lifeless, listless Tommy Gun-athon. The world's most beloved bank robber is supposed to be a Robin Hood who forgets to give back the cash. A Depression Era anti-hero who charms the ladies and cajoles Johnny Law. But here he’s a boring creep. Granted, Johnny Depp is only given give a thin script and a bad (and thin) mustache to make his portrayal of John Dillinger a dandy one, but he’s still ...

Talking about dead celebrities these days is as profound as complaining about the heat, or letting passersby know that you occasionally enjoy the Outer Banks by placing a clever sticker on your rear windshield. You don't need me to blog a requiem for Wacko Jacko, infomercial guy and crazy blondie. We have "Inside Edition" and "Entertainment Tonight" to do that for us. Instead, we'll look at some of their most random screen moments. Michael Jackson / "The Wiz" (1978)This is where Jacko dressed up as a scarecrow and danced around with Diana Ross and Nipsey Russell while destroying an American classic. To be quite honest, I have no idea what Richmond.com is going to call this…Maybe “Unemployment & Daylife” or “A Guide of What Not To Do for Young Men Aged 18 – 23” but, either way, it’s something different that won’t require me to really exert too much effort as I’ll be writing about something more natural.
Moscato D’Asti, from the Piedmont region of Italy, is a sweet, fizzy, low-alcohol wine meant for those of us who’d rather drink our dessert than have a slice of cake. Not as sparkling as Champagne or Prosecco, the soft display of bubbles in the glass makes for a playful ending to a meal and is also easy to drink solo. Now that fruit is plentiful, try this sparkling wine with a bowl of fresh berries and cream after a night of fireworks.
Sometimes your coolest friends are also your most annoying. And sometimes those off-beat, truly witty comedies can wear thin and fray your funny bone. You know the friends I’m talking about…the ones who brag about shopping at thrift stores (not out of necessity), can toss out obscure French philosophers’ cosmic nuggets without a pause, and rally against the mainstream sensibilities with a certain bohemian nobility. These are mostly good things, until you’re stuck on a two-week road trip with them.
Every so often the subject of tipping etiquette comes up, and the "experts" who respond always seem to be members of the service industry. So of course they tell you to tip a minimum of 20%. You can ask a hooker what they think is fair for a dry hand job and they're gonna tell you $20. But you could probably negotiate a wet one at last call in exchange for a $6 Long Island Iced Tea! And don't even get me started on all the well paid folks out there who think they deserve a tip. At the Richmond SPCA, we presently have more than 230 kittens in our care. About 75 of that number reside with temporary foster families and nearly 65 await foster care placement within the next 24 to 48 hours. Some are orphans. Some are sick. All of them need us. Just today we transferred 51 underage kittens from our partner Richmond Animal Care & Control, and we anticipate admitting tens more before the week’s end. ...

This week alone, Morton's, The Steakhouse is hosting “Greetings from Argentina: Malbec Tasting,” a dining event on Wednesday, June 24.

I think the next best reality show contest would be a televised shark tank of divorce lawyers biting and buttin’ their way to earn the right to represent Jon & Kate. The truth is that anything would be better than watching “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” the once super-sized saccharine family portrait-turned-awkward marriage post-mortem. Watching the show these days is like watching footage of cosmetic surgery gone bad...literally and figuratively.
Last week a story broke that had River City soccer moms tossing back Sunny D cosmos and preparing to grocery shop in a post-apocalyptic society: Ukrop's had been overthrown by Food Lion as the top grocer in the RIC. According to a survey conducted by industry pub Food World, Food Lion now claims a 19.34-percent slice of Richmond’s grocery market share, while Ukrop’s has 17.58 percent. Wal-Mart follows in third with 12.14 percent and Kroger gained a percentage point from last year with 11.38 percent of the total market.
Uncovering Depression Era America

Hello, short post this week. . . This is an interview with David Taylor, author of a “Soul of a People.” The show is fascinating, the book was even better. Taylor looks at a small portion of Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration called the Federal Writers’ Project. Considered the largest cultural experiment of its time, the Writers’ Project set out to employ thousands of out-of-work journalists, novelists, poets and people to document history. They produced some of the most spirited stories of America life ever published. Thank you for tuning in.

Pick-Up Lines: Eh?

For some reason or another, there seems to be a pretty big misunderstanding going around concerning pick-up lines…Namely, that people still use them. I realize some guys may get away with one every once in a while but, by and large, pick-up lines do not (and should not) work. However, if you’re ever going to use one I would go the humorous route simply because in a matter of moments you learn about a key aspect of another individual’s personality.
The 2009 Central Virginia Wine Festival, held Saturday at Innsbrook, was hot. Not as hot as last year, but hot just the same. Event organizers, tuckered from the steamy festivities, remarked that attendance was down slightly from previous years. Blame it on the heat, blame it on the economy, but don’t blame it on the Hokies, who drank and danced in droves. On a positive cord, this year’s attendees dealt with shorter lines to Lake Anna Winery's infamous white sangria topped with dry ice. Easy to make and quite dramatic when poured over smoky dry ice, the white sangria was ...

The Bible and Homosexuality

God is the ultimate and sovereign judge for sin. Homosexuality is sin by His order; it is not decided by public opinion or deceived/false clergy. Changing societies do not dictate God's standards. Sin is defined by God for us in the Bible. It is the source for what God says is holy and righteous or sin and abomination. Hebrews 13:8 states that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever; he does not "go with the flow." God's Word says that homosexuality is unnatural, a perversion, an abomination, fornication, vile affections, and a great sin against Him. He states any ...

Last night at a meeting of Richmond's mountain bike club, RMORE, the discussion turned urgently to the matter of sharing the trails. Given that the speakers were longtime area residents, dedicated mountain bikers and the hard working guys and gals who have hand hewn much of those trails, I took note when they insisted that Richmonders need to be reminded that our trails are for everyone.

“Year One” is easy to hate, especially if you loathe Jack Black’s hammy shtick, think Michael Cera peaked in “Arrested Development” or you have a worn Bible in your bedroom – and you’re not living in a Super 8. Sure, “Year One” is essentially cave drawings and Old Testament yarns retold and skewered with fart jokes and pratfalls. It sounds sophomoric and offensive – and it is – but it’s also got a surprisingly smart wit and a carefree attitude that should help it overachieve at the box office – and have the Gideons working overtime. But, what makes Copeland unique in her industry is her own sense of green chic. For example, there is vintage hat day at the office, where employees are encouraged to wear “recycled” hats to work and the best look is voted via Facebook. ...

For her sins have reached the heavens, and God has remembered her iniquities." Before I expose and examine the moral corruption within the Wachovia coporate office located in the West End (Innsbruck) area of Richmond, Virginia, I need to define a common buzzword used to camouflage the main tenet of the homosexual agenda.

One of the things I've always enjoyed about running is the pleasure I derive from the sound of my breathing. I realized this after a discussion with my younger brother about how he can no longer run unless he's listening to something to make the time pass -- iPod, books on tape, something in the head phones. Not me. I'm just the opposite -- what I like most is that I am doing it, hearing it with my own ears and feeling it all in the same moment. There's a sense of being immersed in it that makes it very satisfying -- more than an activity, it's a ...

We all know that times are tough. Everyone seems to be broke and, if you’re not yet, you’re sure to be soon. That’s where Sushi-O steps in. All month long, the Southside sushi spot is offering Robert Pecota artist series Sauvignon Blanc for one penny. The wine normally sells for $34 and scored 89 points in Wine Spectator Magazine.Sound like a bargain? I thought so. All you to do it is stop by Sushi-O in June, buy two chefs specials or Sushi combo platters, and add the Sauvignon Blanc for just one cent. It’s that easy?

Fredericksburg Dentist Dr. Lipscomb talks about childrens' teeth. A recent article spoke about the physical and sociological effects of decay in the child's dentition. I just want to talk about some of the common questions I get about childrens' teeth. Primary teeth are different than permanent teeth. They have different anatomy and their own set of benefits and problems. They have a lifetime of a decade, but it is a very important decade. Primary teeth have very large nerves inside. When a child has a cavity, it is not a far trip from the outside world to the nerve inside ...

Fredericksburg Dentist Jason T. Lipscomb talks about dental implants. Dental implants are now considered the standard of care for replacing one tooth or multiple teeth. This means that implants is the best way to replace a tooth, if the conditions are suitable. People are often put off by the idea or cost of implants, but I want to change your mind. 1) Implants allow a single tooth to be replaced without involving neighboring teeth. A bridge or partial may require modification of neighboring teeth. 2) Implants seem expensive, but are fairly comparable to a bridge or partial denture. A bridge involves ...

With permission from their owners, we're sharing Cassius & Rambo's story: There are times we have caught them on the kitchen counters where they are not allowed to be. There is the occasional scratching of the furniture even though they have scratching posts. There are those moments that make us say, “Let us sleep a little bit longer?” However, those incidents are few and far between compared to the everlasting ...

Farouk was the other wine guy; the younger, darker one with the slight burr of a French accent who poured at Can-Can’s Monday night wine tastings and had no problem conversing with Parisian expats in their native tongue. (Richmond females, you’ve met Farouk, somewhere. Trust me.) You can find Farouk these days at his new gig at Belle Vie on the Southside.
The influx of kittens to the Richmond SPCA that began near the start of this month was a reminder that kitten season still makes a tremendous impact on the population of homeless cats in area shelters. During the first three months of each year, the Richmond SPCA offers free spay/neuter to all cats in our area, regardless of their owner’s income. This program has made an impact on the numbers of orphaned kittens born in our community, but there are still many looking for homes this spring. Nationally, June is recognized as Adopt-A-Cat Month, and the Richmond SPCA is offering ...

No Fringe Benefits

During the day my “job” is to oversee a house full of kids. In short, I am a nanny and, frankly, I’m not the least bit ashamed of this job…Now, is it what I had expected to be doing in my mid-twenties? Is this what I dreamed of while I woke up for classes at 8 a.m.? No…Of course not. However, the one plus side I anticipated having was that I would have the chance to meet an endless array of women. In my mind, I would be meeting beautiful single women at the kids' school, at the mall, at ...

'Tyson' Movie Review

Mike Tyson is the James Joyce of train-wreck celebrities. Seriously. Sure, he’s tough to read just like the literary giant, but once you get comfortable and crack his stream-of-conscious flow, it's rich and compelling stuff. The man responsible for cracking the misunderstood heavyweight champ in "Tyson" is screenwriter and director James Tobek, whose credits include “The Gambler” and “The Pick-up Artist.” Tobek met Tyson when he was just 19, and is able to smelt Iron Mike on the big screen in such a way that despite all of the boxer’s well-publicized transgressions, we feel for the guy. “Tyson” combines first-person interviews ...

A Mission of Peculiarity

A Mission of Peculiarity(John 17:13-19) by Jim Elliff It is the task of the Christian to demonstrate his or her peculiarity to the world. In reading through the catalogue of people of faith in Hebrews 11, it is the peculiarity of the men and women of faith that is most prominent. You cannot get much stranger than Noah, for instance, who hammered on a boat for 120 years waiting for a promised flood in a world that had not yet even seen rain. Think about it. This man was unusual, to say the least. When Jesus prayed that you would ...

by John R. RiceA favorite device of the Devil is to have men look to their works for their salvation instead of looking to Christ. He leads some to trust in their morality, some to depend upon lodge membership, some to depend upon confessions to priests; some he leads to trust in baptism. That is a fatal mistake. The unanimous voice of all the Scriptures is that people are saved by simple faith in Christ, without any act of righteousness, and baptism is never mentioned as a part of the plan of salvation. Baptism is an act of righteousness, for ...

Community Kitchen Garden: Weeds and Bugs - Two Guaranteed Occurrences in Gardening!

by Janine Butler, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden volunteer In last week's blog, I commented on how well all the plants had been growing over the last couple of weeks. Well guess what else has been growing? Yep, WEEDS! I spent a good hour or so on Saturday using a cool tool called a scuffle hoe - you move it back and forth as if you were sweeping the floor, except instead of collecting dirt it wacks the top of the weeds off! It works pretty well for the broadleaf weeds, but we also have some pesky wiry, grassy weed, which ...

With “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” you get a C-student shoe salesman that rarely dazzles but doesn’t disappoint, either. There are no Oscar hopes, no sequels in the pipeline and no promotional “Dancing with the Stars” cameos – although it would have been nice to see John Travolta pull a hamstring while fox trottin’ with Lil Kim.“Pelham” – I’m shortening the atrociously long name for both our sakes – is actually a remake of a 1974 subway hostage flick starring Walter Matthau, which only ...
