Retired Brigadier General Don Bolduc joins the podcast for a fascinating, candid, no-nonsense discussion of an Army career that spanned almost four decades. Bolduc's incredible career began in the enlisted ranks and ended as Commander of Special Operations US-Africa Command. In between, Bolduc earned a degree and became an officer, then a Ranger and eventually on to Q Course and Special Operations.

Bolduc spent time at the staff level in the Pentagon and JSOC, and deployed throughout the world, including multiple combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bolduc was among the first US forces in the initial invasion of Afghanistan, shortly after 9/11, and linked up with then-Afghan President Hamid Karzai to help form a government and combat the Taliban and al-Qaeda. During his time in charge of US Special Operations in Africa, Bolduc instituted a program to formally provide a path to treatment for the mental, physical, and spiritual health of soldiers in his command, and has been open about his own struggles with PTSD.

Bolduc now teaches at New England College, ran in the Republican primary for US Senate from New Hampshire in 2020, and plans to run again in 2022.

After Georgia election official Gabriel Sterling asked GOP lawmakers to tone down the unsubstantiated claims of vote fraud in his state earlier this week, the Trump campaign shared a 90-second video on Twitter alleging another Georgia related election conspiracy theory. "Video footage from Georgia shows suitcases filled with ballots pulled from under a table AFTER supervisors told poll workers to leave room and 4 people stayed behind to keep counting votes," the tweet said. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and other GOP figures have since demanded a signature audit of the presidential election in the Peach State.

Where do we go from here? Sterling joined Sarah and Steve on today's episode to debunk election conspiracy theories about his state and offer a pathway forward for the GOP. "To me, this is the playbook that was run by Stacey Abrams in 2018 in Georgia," Sterling tells Steve and Sarah of the Trump campaign's claim that the election was rigged.

Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated in Tehran last week, eliminating the country's leading nuclear expert and the head of its program. Iranian officials have blamed Israel for Fakhrizadeh's killing, vowing retaliation for the targeted attack.

Nuclear weapons expert David Albright joined Dany and Marc to explain what Fakhrizadeh's death means for the country's effort to obtain nuclear weapons. He also discusses what to expect from Iran in the coming days and how the Biden administration's Iran policy will differ from that of the Trump administration.

David Albright, a physicist, is founder and President of the non-profit Institute for Science and International Security. He is a former weapons inspector and has written numerous assessments on secret nuclear weapons programs throughout the world.

Joanne Herring, a longtime political activist and philanthropist, deserves a great deal of credit for helping break the back of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980s. 

Herring, who became politically engaged in the Middle East in the 1970s, saw that the Soviet Union was seeking to take over Afghanistan to ultimately gain control of the Strait of Hormuz, the passage today for one-fifth of the world's crude oil exports.

Today, Herring joins the show to share how she and the late Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-Texas, worked together to get the Afghan people the resources they needed to defeat the USSR and move America one giant step closer to winning the Cold War. 

Herring also discusses her philanthropic work in Afghanistan, which she calls Marshall Plan Charities, and how one Afghan village was revitalized by empowering the people with the tools they needed to survive.

Common Grace is both a theological doctrine within the reformed tradition and the title of a truly monumental book discussing the doctrine by the theologian and statesmen Abraham Kuyper. It is grace from God that is common to all of mankind distinct from both the special grace by which God redeems, sanctifies, and glorifies his people as well as the gift of creation itself.

Kuyper puts it this way, "Common grace issues from God, and from God come all the means that we humans must apply to oppose sin and its consequences in curse and misery."

But it is God himself who leads us to find the means and instructs us how to use them. And it is precisely the latter that is forgotten. The human inventor of the electric light and electric motor is extolled, but God, who led Edison to discover it, is passed over.

Today, Acton's Dan Hugger talks with Jordan Ballor, senior research fellow and director of publishing at the Acton Institute and General Editor of the twelve volume Abraham Kuyper: Collected Works in Public Theology, about Kuyper's exploration of the doctrine in his monumental work Common Grace.

The third and final volume of this work, jointly published by Lexham Press and the Acton Institute, has recently been published in English translation.

Elitism, not racism, is the biggest obstacle in overcoming poverty, says Robert Woodson, today's guest on "The Daily Signal Podcast." Woodson is founder and president of Woodson Center, a D.C. nonprofit that operated as the Center for Neighborhood Enterprise before a name change in late 2016.

Woodson's new book "Lessons From the Least of These: The Woodson Principles," examines what this veteran civil rights leader and locally focused activist describes as the wisdom of "healing agents" who are transforming lives in some of America's poorest, most toxic neighborhoods. From such leaders, he says, he distilled 10 principles to guide others who wish to help intervene to change the "worst circumstances" of low-income communities.

What kind of strategies have contributed to rehabilitating such neighborhoods? Can some of those strategies or reforms also be applied to healing the nation's divisions? Bob Woodson fields these and other questions.

Caroline Hoxby is the Scott and Donya Bommer Professor of Economics at Stanford University, the director of the Economics of Education Program for the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. She also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Board for Education Sciences. Hoxby's research has received numerous awards, including a Carnegie Fellowship, a John M. Olin Fellowship, a National Tax Association Award, and a major grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Development. She has written extensively on educational choice and related issues. Hoxby is the editor of How the Financial Crisis and Great Recession Affected Higher Education (University of Chicago Press, 2015), The Economic Analysis of School Choice (University of Chicago Press, 2002), and College Choices (University of Chicago Press, 2004). She graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University in 1988, where she won a Hoopes Prize. She earned her master's degree in 1990 from the University of Oxford, which she attended on a Rhodes Scholarship, and her doctorate in 1994 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Today, Jonah is joined by Virginia Postrel - former editor-in-chief of Reason magazine and author of many of the latter-day holy tomes of libertarianism, such as The Future and Its Enemies - to talk about her new book, The Fabric of Civilization. Virginia and Jonah do a deep dive into several moments in which the changes in textile manufacturing created giant, revolutionary, consciousness-shifting ripple effects regarding how civilizations viewed their relationship to markets and the economy. In particular, Virginia addresses how the un-guilded spinners of Europe were like the Luddites before it was cool, why textile-making would be one of the most laborious processes in the world without advanced technologies, and what made cotton fabric from India so special that "the French treated it much the same as the American government treats cocaine." At least that kind of wild protectionism confirms a long-held American instinct: Never trust the French.

It seems like, not long ago, arguments against immigration focused almost entirely on illegal immigrants. And then it became, "Actually, we're also concerned about low-skilled immigration." And then that concern started applying to higher-skilled immigrants replacing American workers in more advanced positions. And now, it seems like some people just don't want any immigrants -- especially during this pandemic and maybe even after it's over -- because they're stealing our secrets and taking college slots away from American students. But this perspective fails to recognize how much immigrants of all skill-levels contribute to America. I'll be discussing these contributions -- and the economics of immigration more broadly -- with Michael Clemens.

Michael is a senior fellow and the director of migration, displacement, and humanitarian policy at the Center for Global Development, where he studies the economic effects of migration around the world. He is also a research fellow at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics.

Abigail Adams recorded that when her husband and Thomas Jefferson visited Shakespeare's birthplace, Jefferson fell upon the ground and kissed it and John Adams cut a chip from Shakespeare's chair. Jefferson and Adams both revered Shakespeare, as did Abigail, and they all understood how necessary it was for a free people to revere what deserves reverence.
