Bicyclist Harassment Ordinance Passed

COLUMBIA, MO (Jordan Wyner)—A city of 84,000 people in Missouri has passed a bicyclist harassment ordinance making the throwing of objects, verbal assault and other offenses illegal, and a misdemeanor offense punishable by a $1,000 fine or one year of jail time.

The Columbia ordinance, which is modeled after similar ordinances in South Carolina and Colorado, makes it a misdemeanor to do the following: throw an object at or in the direction of a cyclist, threatening a cyclist to frighten or disturb the cyclist, sounding a horn with the intention to frighten or disturb a cyclist, knowingly placing a cyclist in the path of physical injury, or knowingly engaging in conduct that creates a risk of death or serious physical injury for a cyclist.

Gino Nacey of Global Ride hooked Ride-Strong.com up with their Global Ride Virtual Cycling DVDs. When you are training indoors on your trainer these DVD’s are perfect.

Global Ride has introduced a completely different type of Indoor Cycling DVD than most of the industry has been accustomed to. The video is shot in first person perspective so that you get the feeling that you are the one riding on the road. They have been extensively reviewed on line at Cycling Blogs as well as Amazon, and it turns out they are highly regarded by everyone who watches them.

These DVDs are a refreshing change from watching a static movie of other sad cyclists who are forced to ride indoors instead of training where we all like to - outside. They also give the viewer plenty of choices for using their music (which we like very much), or your own, or listening to a number of different coaches, or no coaching at all.

These make a great addition to your own training library, or if you teach at a local fitness facility, you can encourage them to purchase their own copy, and you can teach to them to add some variety to your indoor classes.

Naturally, no one wants to ride indoors when the weather is good, and so this is the “slow season” for Global Ride. Oh and by the way, each DVD has a bonus 30 minute section on Yoga, Pilates or Strength Training designed specifically for cyclists.

We spent a lot of money on getting commercial music too - not the “royalty free crap” that most indoor fitness videos use. Gino Nacey

Help A Fellow Cyclist In Her Fight Against Cancer and Win A New Car

Colleen Whealdon-Haught was diagnosed in April 2005 with metastatic breast cancer. In 2005 she had a mastectomy and removal of left arm lymph nodes. After surgery, as soon as humanly possible, she got back on the bike even though she was also taking chemotherapy. Doctors said her physical and medical condition contributed to a fast recovery. She was declared cancer free 9 months later.

In 2008 Colleen began to experience chest pains. Doctors discovered an 8 centimeter mass beneath her sternum and lesions on her liver, pelvis and spine. She immediately began the first series of chemotherapy treatments.

Currently her cancer disease is not responding to treatment. Three different kinds of chemotherapy have failed to slow the cancer.

And yet, Colleen remains an inspiration to everyone who knows her. She has set a personal goal to raise $20,000 + for the Lance Armstrong Foundation so that she can participate in the “Ride For the Roses” in October in Austin, TX and have a personal group ride with Lance Armstrong the day before the race. Her hope is to “live long enough for a new life-prolonging drug to be discovered or a cure to be found.”

Recently Colleen was able to have a short visit with Lance Armstrong at the Tour of the Gila, a bike race in southwestern New Mexico. Pictured to the right Collen and her husband George Varhola with Lance Armstrong at the Tour of the Gila.
