MEET THE PARALYMPIANS

I can’t stress how awesome it is that Los Angeles is hosting a World Championship track cycling event this week. The UCI Para-Cycling Track Worlds starts tomorrow and the lovely Pat Benson made this video a couple weeks ago to introduce some of the athletes who will be competing.

Admission is free at the Home Depot Center Velodrome so be sure to come check out some of the races.

WHAT’S THAT ABOUT THE APPLE AND THE TREE?

I just read this great interview with track legend Jack Simes on Velo Veritas. In the article, the multiple National Champion and former six-day racer talks about his whole career riding velodromes in the sixties and seventies. Of course, Jack Simes (the rider in the left photo circa early 1960’s) is father to young Jackie Simes (the rider in the right photo circa 1998) who currently races the six-days in Europe. What I love about the Simes family is that Jack’s father (the holder in the left photo) and even his grandfather before that were also bike racers. That’s four generations of bike racing!

PARA-CYCLING WORLDS THIS WEEK IN L.A.

The Home Depot Center Velodrome and the City of Los Angeles are proud and honored to host the UCI Para-Cycling World Championships this week. A world-class event like this doesn’t come to town too often so, come check out the world’s strongest paracyclists race for those Champion Stripes.

Pursuits, Kilo’s and 500m TT’s will be on Thursday through Saturday. Tandem Sprints will be on Sunday (definitely don’t miss that!). Check out the full schedule on the official Para-Cycling World Champs website.

ANALYSIS OF A SPRINT

Mark Buckaway has been shooting POV track footage up at Forest City Velodrome for a while now. In his latest video, Mark narrates a Match Sprint between him and Jim Morrow.

Since the track is so short — 138 meters, the shortest velodrome in North America — the Match Sprint is five laps long and the sprint is often engaged with two laps to go. Must be pretty crazy to hit those turns at speed — just look how steep those banks are!

Mark cites Victoria Pendleton as his sprinting inspiration. The only diference is Vicky would usually win… except if she’s up against Anna Meares.
