Select a final project that shows off your progress in electronics.

Upon completing a year's studies in electronics, students often produce final projects to demonstrate their understanding and synthesis of the year's lessons. When selecting a year-end project, look for a theme that interests you; your passion for the subject will show through in your attention to the project's details. In addition, look for a project that showcases the subjects you have learned over the year.

Dummy Alarm
- If you've completed an introductory course in electronics, such as an elective course at the middle school level, you might use your basic understandings to create a "dummy alarm." Essentially, you'll create a red light that blinks on and off, just like the indicator lights used in real alarm systems. Your "dummy" version might even help to keep potential thieves away from your car sound system or other valuables. To create a long-lasting dummy alarm, use a 7555 timer instead of a standard 555 timer, as it will require less power. A "superbright" red LED also requires less current than a standard LED to produce the same light. Because the light is unlit most of the time, the average current for the circuit should be under .2 milliampere. Three AA batteries should run your alarm for months or even a year.
Metering
- For an advanced course of study, design an electronic meter for your end-of-term project. Instead of using traditional mechanical meters to show your consumption of gas, water or electricity, you can easily create an electronic device to show utility consumption more accurately and in an easier-to-read format. For a gas meter, you will need a pulse measuring circuit and a low-voltage detection circuit. Both of these will connect to a main microcontroller, which in turn connects to the system's motor driver and an LCD display. For an electric meter, you will also need a temperature sensor for continuous feedback.
Flickering Christmas Tree
- If your electronics course finishes in the fall semester, you might create a holiday-theme final project: a miniature Christmas tree with flashing lights. Use 18 LED lights, a 9-volt power supply such as a PP3 battery, and a 4060B IC, a combined counter and oscillator clock. For the tree itself, paint cardboard, plywood or medium-density fiberboard with bright green paint, boring holes for the LED lights.
Voice Recorder
- For a somewhat advanced end-of-year project, design your own voice recorder. You can use the device for a range of purposes, from a party gag to an automated "message pad" to keep by the house phone. To build a voice recorder, plans will most likely require a condensator microphone, a speaker and push buttons, besides all requisite wiring and circuit board.

The humble lightbulb has changed thanks to engineers trying to save energy.

The world is rapidly changing, and people are increasingly relying on technology to assist them in their tasks.Yet, technology has also created a terrible burden. The world is now dealing with environmental destruction on a global scale. The most terrible side effect of this is global warming. Today, electrical engineers have an opportunity to create technologies which are environmentally friendly and that can reverse the damage already done. As a final year project, why not design technologies that will help the environment and thus the world. There are many projects you could create.

Computer Simulation Systems
- Simulations have been used in films and by scientists to test real-life ideas.
  Create a computer simulation program where real-world problems and theories can be tested. Simulators are used already in this way by quantum physicists and astronomers to predict the movement of stars and planets. Create a program that can help other researchers in your field test their theories.
Advanced Robotics
- Robot-controlled cars are already being developed.
  Robot cars, robot houses, robot wheelchairs -- the possibilities are endless. The field of robotics is just starting to grow and attract global attention. Doing a final project in robotics could help you secure work later on. Design a robot-controlled car or simple robots that respond to stimuli such as voice commands. Some examples of previous works have been cars that are activated by speech recognition and simple robots that can move and talk.
Renewable Energy Car
- To create a better world, why not design a car that runs on grass?
  A car that does not need gas to run is an old idea, but a good one. Develop a vehicle that runs on renewable forms of energy. Many final year engineering students have followed this example, so try to make your method more original than, say, solar power or electricity. That said, if you are actually building a model it will be very impressive no matter what it runs on.
The Intelligent House
- Imagine a house that does the shopping, cleaning and cooking for you.
  Draw up plans for an intelligently designed house. Such a house would include photovoltaic or solar panels. These could be hooked up to a system that measures environmental conditions and adjusts the panel output accordingly. Furthermore, the home would be designed to contain highly advanced electronic equipment. If you are working in a team, then each member could design a room and the appliances that would be in it. In turn, you would build a software system used to sink the appliances, monitors and security systems in the house.

Grassoline's Dark side: Is it practical to fuel your car with grass?

DuPont-Danisco and other advocates are touting biofuels derived from switchgrass, but the environmental benefits are highly questionable

Of all the possible biofuel crops that can be grown in the United States, perhaps the most attractive is Panicum virgatum, otherwise known as switchgrass. A hardy perennial native to North America, it needs little fertilizer and water, and pests don’t seem to like it much. So it holds out the shimmering promise of one day producing vast quantities of fuel in ”carbon neutral” fashion, absorbing as much carbon dioxide in growth as it releases when burned.

Compared with sugarcane or corn, though, switchgrass is tricky to use, because it provides cellulose—the natural polymer that gives plants their rigidity—rather than simple sugars. So you need to do some elaborate processing, first to break down the cellulose and then to ferment the resulting sugary brew so that it turns into ethanol, which can be served neat or blended with gasoline. As yet, nobody has succeeded in producing switchgrass ethanol on a commercial scale, and the economics of doing so remain fuzzy.

One company that believes it’s on the verge of success is DuPont Danisco Cellulosic Ethanol (DDCE), based in Itasca, Ill. Founded in May 2008 by DuPont and Danisco, DDCE has just completed a pilot ethanol plant in Vonore, Tenn., which is slated to open officially in a few months. The facility, built in partnership with the University of Tennessee, will be able to produce almost a million liters (250 000 gallons) of ethanol per year from either switchgrass or corncobs. DDCE then plans to build a much larger plant in Tennessee with a capacity of nearly 60 million L a year. Meanwhile, it’s taking advantage of more than US $70 million in state support to enlist farmers to start growing the grass now. The company is thus positioning itself on the cutting edge of a new ”grassoline”-based economy.

”We’re doing scale-up and commercialization,” says Vonnie Estes, vice president of commercial development and marketing for DDCE. ”Once we get it up and going, it’ll be competitive with gasoline—I have no doubt.”

Perhaps she should have doubts. Here’s one: Will it be possible to transform the half billion or so cars and trucks in the United States so that they can use more homegrown ethanol and less gasoline? Even Estes sees that hurdle. ”That’s one of the big issues—creating the market,” she says.

But even if a market does emerge and DDCE’s production process proves highly profitable, this technology can’t be considered a winner. Why? Because it will fail to satisfy the main premise for adopting it in the first place: to benefit the environment. A simple thought experiment sheds light on the dark side of grassoline.

Suppose you replaced all the gasoline the United States now uses with switchgrass-derived ethanol. How much land would that take? The United States consumes 522 billion L of gasoline a year. Because of the difference in energy density, you need about 1.5 L of ethanol to replace a liter of gasoline. So the yearly requirement for ethanol would be about 780 billion L. A hectare of switchgrass can supply about 4700 L of ethanol a year, so the United States would need to devote roughly 170 million hectares (420 million acres) to it.

That’s an enormous quantity of land—almost as much as the country now devotes to farming. And even if you covered all that land with switchgrass, it wouldn’t produce enough fuel to supply the country’s diesel trucks and buses, its jet aircraft, or the homes and businesses that use petroleum for heating fuel.

Carpeting the continent with enough switchgrass to displace all that petroleum use is theoretically possible—but it would be an environmental catastrophe on many counts. For one, it would devastate what’s left of the already besieged wilderness. And according to estimates that Timothy Searchinger of Princeton University and his colleagues published in the journal Science in 2008, it would also exacerbate the world’s greenhouse-gas problem, not help solve it. That’s because even if switchgrass agriculture were limited to established cropland, we’d end up having to convert forests and other land to agriculture just to feed ourselves. That in turn would release huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Many of the wonks now working out carbon-emissions policy have missed this simple fact, an oversight that Searchinger and his colleagues pointed out in another piece inScience this past October.

Biofuel can’t be considered carbon neutral, Searchinger says. ”Even the strongest advocates in the biofuel industry would agree that it’s not,” he says. But biofuel advocates downplay that and other environmental risks.

Estes argues that switchgrass would be planted mainly on fallow farmland. ”Where we’re looking at growing these crops, there isn’t anything growing there anyway,” she says. Her collaborator Kelly Tiller, director of external operations for the University of Tennessee’s office of bioenergy programs, notes that planting switchgrass ”has good wildlife benefits” and that it stores carbon in the soil. And she points out that there are some places where switchgrass could be grown with no environmental costs at all: within highway medians, for example, or along power-line rights-of-way. And, she asks, what are the alternatives? ”There is no perfect solution. This is a sustainable bridge while we develop new technologies,” she says.

EXPERT CALLS

The benefits to wildlife and the carbon storage Tiller is talking about are, however, only valid if your baseline is traditional farming. But as Searchinger and his colleagues pointed out in their 2008 Science article, truly excess cropland eventually reverts to forest. And when that happens, you’d get all the wildlife-friendly, carbon-storing benefits that ensue. If you plant switchgrass there instead, those benefits are lost. ”You have to look at what you give up,” says Searchinger. As for growing switchgrass along highways or under power lines, that’s all good, but it would put just a small dent in the problem.

What’s more, if switchgrass proves highly profitable, what’s to prevent farmers from raising it everywhere? Strict U.S. regulations may save forests from being replaced by fields of switchgrass, but elsewhere in the world trees would inevitably be chopped down, either to make way for biofuel feedstock or to grow the crops that switchgrass displaces elsewhere. For this reason alone, DDCE’s project is destined to be a loser, even if it one day proves a commercial success.

What the Hell is "Grassoline"? - A Quick Guide to Alt Fuels

With the price of oil shattering the $100 per barrel mark - and continuing to climb - finding immediate, realistic alternative fuel choices has become the hot topic everywhere from water coolers to board rooms, cocktail parties to locker-rooms.

Will we ever wrench ourselves free of our decades-long dependence on fossil fuels? I have no idea. And it's a debate I'm not going to get into here. (Mainly because guys much, much smarter than me don't seem to have a clear answer.) Some of these options are available now. Some are just a year or two away. And some may take several years to show up, if ever at all.

But because we are guys, and according to the women in our lives, we're supposed to know everything about cars and what makes them go, here is a quick and simple guide to some of the alternatives being researched, developed and argued over. And a little info on the cars they power. So you can speak somewhat intelligently at that next cocktail party.

ETHANOL -
What it is: An alt fuel made by fermenting sugar with yeast, with corn being the most common choice right now. Essentially the same alcohol created when distilling sugars to use for spirits like vodka and granddad's moonshine, this version is created to fuel you car, not your libido.
In its most typical usage, ethanol is mixed with gasoline. The "E85" ethanol you are hearing about and seeing on some flex fuel cars (see below) means it runs on a mixture of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. If you don't have a flex fuel car, and still want to go green, most cars on the road can run on E10 (10% ethanol/90% gas). Why even add gas at all and just go E100? It's possible, but that small amount of gas helps cold starts and drivability.

Pros: Much cleaner burning. Better for the environment. Has a higher octane than regular gas, giving a noticeable power boost. Grown in America. Renewable resource. Relieves dependence on foreign oil. Depending on fuel prices, can be mixed with gas in different ratios to save money.

Cons: No widespread distribution and sales infrastructure, so it's not widely available at US stations. (And retrofitting stations to serve E85 is expensive.) Fuel economy is significantly lowered - by about 20-25% in most cases. Some argue the cost of growing, harvesting and processing the corn to create ethanol is way higher than the cost to produce gasoline. Some disagree and say corn is cheap, there is a surplus and is renewable. So the debate rages on.

Interesting fact: After distilling, ethanol must be "denatured", or made undrinkable. Because it's basically sugar turned into alcohol - as are most spirits - in it's pre-denatured form it's considered to be a potable spirit and would be taxed accordingly (read: highly), by the government. Too bad. It would make a stop at the fueling station a helluva lot more fun. A little for the car... a little for me...

CELLULOSIC ETHANOL -
What it is: Similar to regular ethanol, but is made from the sugars found in certain waste products, wood and grasses - hence the nickname "grassoline". (This is the option that induces visions of Doc Brown dumping garbage into the DeLorean's flux capacitor for fuel in Back to the Future. "Where we're going, we won't need roads...)

Pros: Uses waste (like underbrush, sawdust and corn cobs), that would normally be thrown in landfills and compost heaps, or just burned off. Virtually limitless supply of material can be used for creating fuel. Does not impact the food supply, as argued against corn-based ethanol. Processing plants can be set up right where the supplies are, no need to transport it miles, using more fuel.

Cons: See ethanol's cons above.

HYDROGEN -
What it is: When mixed with oxygen, hydrogen creates a chemical reaction that produces two things: water vapor (H2O, remember from high school chem class?), and electricity. The electricity given off powers a motor that drives the wheels of a fuel cell vehicle (see description below).

Pros: About as clean a fuel as you can get. The "exhaust" given off is just water vapor. Eliminates the need for an engine or transmission, meaning less mechanical problems and no need for fluids, gasoline or oil, saving you money in repairs and more of the environment's resources. And since there is no engine, there is no engine noise, eliminating some of the noise pollution as well.

Cons: Very limited availability. Just a handful of hydrogen fueling stations exist in the US. Question as to the cost of using hydrogen for mass consumption. Cost of producing the cars is astronomical, and could take years for those costs to come down to where the average person could afford one. And since there is no engine, there is no engine noise, eliminating one of the things we love about our cars.

ELECTRIC -
What it is: Just like your vacuum cleaner, blender or Wii, the juice coming out of the socket in your wall can be used to power your vehicle.

Pros: Very clean. Renewable. Somewhat inexpensive (there's a debate on that as well). And like hydrogen, very, very quiet.

Cons: Balancing battery size with a decent driving range has been a high-wire act. More milage capability means exponentially larger batteries, which in turn means more space needed and more weight added. Using smaller, lighter batts means the cars run and handle better, but have a much shorter range. And refueling takes hours, not minutes, so letting the battery run down doesn't mean a short stop at a station, it means plugging in and sitting around for half a day.

A LITTLE ABOUT THE CARS
FLEX FUEL VEHICLES -
They have been around for decades (especially in Brazil), but are now back in the limelight. Flex fuel vehicles are specially equipped and tuned to run on either gasoline or E85 ethanol. This gives you the flexibility (hence the name "flex fuel") to pump in whatever happens to be the best choice for you, depending on the price and availability of either fuel. Or your level of "eco-friendliness".

Pros: Cars are in production and widely available. Gives you a choice of what fuel to use. Can go green without sacrificing engine power. Talk of having the ability to select ethanol-to-gas ratios right at the pump for greater economy.

Cons: Current limited availability of E85 at the pumps hampers your ability to take advantage of its full potential and environmental impact. Fuel economy (miles per gallon) suffers by as much as 25% when using E85.

HYBRIDS -
They run on both gas and electricity, with the engine automatically switching back and forth depending on need and optimal economy.

Pros: Widely available in many popular models. Best of both worlds: you can increase your fuel economy, lessen your need for gas and help the environment, and still have the convenience of refueling at a gas station. The batteries recharge when the gas engine is in use, eliminating the need for "plugging in". Many SUVs and trucks are available as hybrids now, increasing the economy of many popular gas-guzzlers.

Cons: More expensive, in many cases much more, as their gas only counterparts. Some of the larger vehicles don't deliver the significant milage increase seen in smaller vehicles, therefore some people don't see a dramatic cost savings (when you include the cost of buying the hybrid), over gas only.

FUEL CELL VEHICLES -
These are engine-less, transmission-less, oil-less vehicles powered by the electricity created when hydrogen is mixed with oxygen. (See my post on Chevy's Equinox Fuel Cell here.)

Pros: No mechanical parts means less maintenance and repairs. Gives off no pollutants. Extremely quiet.

Cons: Almost no hydrogen fuel stations in your area. Cost of producing the cars makes them unaffordable. Debate as to the practicality of using hydrogen for fuel consumption. No clear date on when, or if, these vehicles will become available.

ELECTRIC -
Running on the same electricity that powers all your other toys, electric cars will store juice in their on-board batteries. Some models will also include a small gas-powered engine, to get you to your destination in case of a run-down battery.

Pros: Very clean. No exhaust (in electric mode). Economical. Plug in at home overnight, or at work during the day.

Cons: Not a significantly long enough range (in some cases about 40-50 miles vs. several hundred miles on a full tank of gas), to make them useful for anything other than commuting. Long refueling times make this a bad choice for procrastinators and those who fail to plan ahead.

Overall I think the solution is clear: there is no clear solution. But the variety and options being developed today, do give us some solid choices (once the kinks are worked out), for better driving tomorrow

With a little help from a career coach

Your skills may be rusty if you haven't been in the job hunting game for long and you may need help to put you back on track

One solution can be to see a career coach.

Yes, it may be an unpopular choice, particularly if you've fallen from a successful career where you accomplished yourself with no help or assistance. What can a career coach tell you how that changes the game! The market remains as tight as ever and you have no doubt that you're putting every effort possible into finding a job. Your credentials are not questionable either.

You might be mistaken though. The market does change not only in terms of job availability but in terms of how it functions, employer expectations and hiring practices. If you've not been in the job hunting game for long, your skills may be rusty and you might be simply putting too much time and effort in the wrong place or the wrong direction.

Life and executive coach Meredith Haberfeld of New York-based Meredith Haberfeld Coaching says the biggest misconception she encounters in career coaching is that the circumstances are keeping (someone) from getting a job.

"The circumstances are valid," she adds, "but it is almost always because they are not conducting their job search effectively". She explains how an effective job search can be done from networking to developing interviewing skills, etc.

"It is a number of games that require an incredible amount of motivation and daily activity that is not about submitting job [applications] on the internet or looking at job boards," she says.

However, one question remains: would a career coach who helps you develop these skills be the simple answer to how to reach a dream job or get out of unemployment?

Maybe, but not without your own actions, motivation, efforts and within the realistic expectations. What the career coach does is to work to achieve the most within the limitations. "The circumstances guide what is possible but there is so much more possible for one's career than feeling stuck," she says.

Additionally, if you expect a career coach to tell you what to do, you will be disappointing. Coaching is not about dictation. "We partner with someone to have them ask all the right questions so that they will lead themselves down the right path," she adds.

Coaching for everyone?

The majority of career coaching seekers don't seem to be coming from the unemployed category particularly in the UAE. Paul White of Dubai's Sandpiper Coaching says those who are forced into job change by local redundancies often have such a short time frame to find their next opportunity that seeking professional coaching falls lower on their priority list.

He narrows them his clients to a professional male in his forties or early fifties who reached plateau (perhaps in middle management) and desires career progression but sees no options in their current positions. The second category is a professional woman who is trying return to re-enter the work force after moving to a new country or taking a break to have children.

Haberfeld says she sees different types of clients from C level executive to professionals who try to reactivate their careers. However, most of those who seek her help are a category represented by "someone who is successful and accomplished and wants to play a big game."

How to select a coach?

So if you think career coaching might be worth a shot. The next step will be to select a coach. Word of mouth, online reviews and personal recommendations are great. But on additional tip from Sandpiper Coaching's White is to make sure the coach can inspire your trust.

"Take one or two sessions before you commit to a programme, this will give you a good sense if there is trust and synergy developing between you and your coach," he says.

The local knowledge may be beneficial a s well. But Haberfeld says it may not be necessary unless if you're seeking a mentor. "For a mentor you probably want someone who knows that culture and the industry because they are going to coach you on your particular field and particular situation," she says.

Coaching falls more into universal terms. "Whether someone is in Abu Dhabi or in Minneapolis the way they are conducting themselves in their professional life and what's going to uncover the obstacles to their advancement is the same," she adds.

Commercialisation of medical education

THERE was a golden era in the history of medical education — soon after the inception of Pakistan — when admissions were made only on merit and luckily copy culture was not introduced in the country. Talented students from poor and middle-of-the-road families were used to be selected. The discipline and standard of medical education were admirable. The students were distinctive in knowledge and personality.

Service to medical graduates from Pakistan were offered directly not only from the Middle East and the Fareast countries but also from the UK where Pakistani graduates were offered jobs through employment vouchers on their Pakistani graduation certificates.

Gradually, negative changes started getting established. Political admissions, copy culture started booming up. Hundreds of students got admission to medical colleges on political chits and, on the other hand, shortage of teaching staff because of lack of political will and planning took place. As a result, the standard of education grossly deteriorated.

Then came the era of political interference through different political groups to an extent that monthly ‘bhatta’ (extortion) was received in the millions from the respective principles who used to adjust this amount against miscellaneous fake bills of workshops where dozens of college buses were repaired and maintained.

This political influence was not only responsible for getting admissions to many of the non meritorious students of feudals, industrialists and other elite classes but also gave an uncheckable chance to principles of medical colleges who also admitted dozens of students on a financial and non financial basis in their own interest.

Another setback came from the policy of admission on open merit without gender discrimination or allocating women’s seats. As a result, most of the seats of open merit were fetched by girl students, 90 per cent of which abandoned the profession after marriage.

The seats for woment students must have been allocated according to community needs and keeping in view the natural characteristics and ground realities. If open merit without gender differentiation was so justifiable, then why not this formula is applied to forces where half of the strength should have gone to female gender. The biggest setback to medical education was implicated by the so called self-finance scheme and private medical colleges, where non deserving students of the elite class are admitted on payment of millions of rupees, on the seats upon which meritorious students of poor class should have come.

Lastly, one devastating idea of evening classes on a finance basis was floated by the government itself. However, the idea was withdrawn by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council after it was criticised by the Pakistan Medical Association all over Pakistan.

Paramedics, police officers, firefighters and search and rescue crews gathered at Skaha Lake in Penticton on Thursday.

But fortunately it wasn’t for an emergency.

The first response crews were there to give local high school students a taste of what a job in emergency services is all about.

The students learned about the different aspects of emergency services jobs and the qualifications they would need to pursue a career in the emergency services industry.

The group of grade 8 to grade 12 students got the opportunity to handle the Jaws of Life and see Charlie, a search and rescue dog, in action.

This is the fourth year for the Emergency Services Career Day.

Interest in the career spotlight event appears to be growing; the number of students signing up for the session has doubled since it started.

Career Options for Creatives (Finding a Job)

The average American getting out of college today can expect to have five to ten careers during his or her lifetime. If you just graduated, or you have been looking for a job for some time, here are some helpful hints on finding a job.

A study of Harvard students, ten years after graduation, shows that those who had specific goals made salaries three percent greater than the salary of the average Harvard graduate. Those with written goals made ten percent more than the average.

Rarely does an artist make a living exclusively from sales of their work, even if they become fairly well known artists. Many artists hold down a number of jobs in their life. The key is to find a job that allows you to keep making your work and that is satisfying or at least challenging.

Many cities have an arts list-serv; in Los Angeles, it is Los Angeles Culture Net (LACN), a Yahoo users group. You can sign up for the email listings via Yahoo Groups. Most job announcements and opportunities for artists are listed here. Finding one in your own city may help you keep posted about what is going on in the arts in your city. New York Foundation for the Arts has national job listings, not just local (http://www.nyfa.org) and Chicago has Chicago Artists Resource job listings (http://www.chicagoartistsresource.org), or Americans for the Arts Job Bank (http://jobbank.artsusa.org/). There are a variety of other art job listings on the web, but these I can recommend.

Employment Status Definitions

Full-Time

If you can find full-time work that you enjoy and still have time/energy to devote to your art practice, then go for it. A full-time job is generally 40 hours a week. Working full-time gives you better job security, more money and sometimes health and retirement benefits. Some full-time jobs are paid by the hour and others are salary based. The trick is to have enough time and energy to continue making your artwork.

Part-Time

Part-time work is generally paid by the hour. It rarely has benefits such as health insurance and retirement, but it is a good way to try jobs out to see if you like them. It gives you more flexibility for making your artwork, and can sometimes relieve boredom. Part-time teaching often becomes full-time. Consider a part-time job while you are interning at a company you love or while taking classes.

Freelance/Consulting

If you want to work entirely as a consultant or freelance graphic designer, you need to do more than just start handing out your business cards. You must start your own business.

Working as a consultant or a freelance job means more than handing out your business card and expecting a call. It means you are in business for yourself. You should make sure that you understand what it means to be in business. Reading the Self Employment and Business sections of the GYST software will help you get started.

The benefits of being self-employed are choosing your own hours, being able to say no to a client, taking expenses off on your taxes and charging the rate you are worth if you can get it. You get to choose your own health plan if you can afford it, and you determine where your business goes.

The disadvantages are not knowing how to run a business, paying for your own mistakes and bearing sole responsibility for job security. There is a lot more paperwork; for example, you need to pay your own social security and benefits.

When you work with others, each new project may be a collaboration with a group of individuals that are brought together for that project. When the project ends, you will either go on to another one with a different group of people, or if it was successful, perhaps work with them again.

Temp Agencies

Temp agencies (temporary work) want experienced people for most jobs and will usually test your skill set. Temp agencies vary widely in terms of pay, but joining one may be a great way to get experience and network. MacTemps, Manpower, MacPeople, Strategic Staffing, Smith Hampton & Devlin, all claim to place desktop publishers and graphic designers, along with word processors.

Internships

Many companies and organizations offer internships, which provide experience and training in exchange for work. A few will also offer an hourly wage. On average, an internship lasts for one to six months. Make sure that the internship will actually train you to do something, and get specifics in writing before you start. You should get a job description in writing, along with the number of hours per week, the length of the internship and the skills you will learn in writing. Some internships just use you for busy work, but a good internship can lead to great connections and sometimes full-time employment.

Informational Interviews

One of the best ways to find out about a particular industry or company is to do interviews with current employees, or work in the industry you are interested in. This interview is a way to get information, not necessarily a job. Asking someone to chat with you is taking time out of their day, so treat them with respect, take them out for coffee or tea, or a drink after work.

Try to use this interview to clarify your goals and gain information that may not be advertised. Many jobs are found by word of mouth, so make sure you take the opportunity to get the inside scoop. This is also a good way to practice an interview, and get additional information so you know what kinds of questions to ask at a formal interview.

Finding a person to interview might be as easy as asking a relative or someone you know who works in the field. If all else fails, you can write to the company and request an informal interview with someone who works there, perhaps a department head. If you send a letter, include your resume, and any other helpful materials you may have. Asking for information is a great way to get support if they like you. They just might recommend that you apply for a position.

Be sure to send a thank you note to the person you interview. Dress appropriately and keep it short.

Your Goals

There are six main goals of informational interviews:

• Establish rapport with the interviewers. Get to know them personally.

• Let them know who you are. Be genuine and interested.

• Get advice on your job-search, particularly on improving both your approach and your presentation.

• Find out about your job market. Ask about latest developments, publications to
read, or professional groups you should investigate.

• Get referrals. If you have not received names by an interview's end, it is appropriate to ask for them.

• Be remembered favorably. Before leaving, tell an interviewer that you would appreciate being kept in mind in case s/he hears of anything

• Doing research ahead of time is crucial, as you want to know as much about the industry or career you are asking about.

Some Questions You Might Ask

Prepare a list of your own questions for your informational interview. The following are some sample questions:

• On a typical day in your position, what do you do?

• What training or education is required for this type of work?

• What personal qualities or abilities are important to being successful in this job?

• What part of this job do you find most satisfying? Most challenging?

• How did you get your job?

• What opportunities for advancement are there in this field?

• What entry-level jobs are best for learning as much as possible about this job?

• What are the salary ranges for various levels in this field?

• How do you see jobs in this field changing in the future?

• Is there a demand for people in this occupation?

• What special advice would you give a person entering this field?

• What types of training do companies offer persons entering this field?

• Which professional journals and organizations would help me learn more about this field?

• From your perspective, what are the problems you see working in this field?

• If you could do things all over again, would you choose the same path for yourself? Why? What would you change?

• What do you think of my training and experience in terms of entering this field?

• With the information you have about my education, skills, and experience, what other fields or jobs would you suggest I research further before I make a final decision?

• What do you think of my resume? Do you see any problem areas? How would you suggest I change it?

• Who should talk to next? When I call him/her, may I use your name?

Getting To The Interview

Before the interview, make sure to do the following:

• Examine your likes and dislikes in previous work and learning situations -- what kinds of projects have inspired you?

• Determine your careers goals -- what jobs, in what industries, do you want?

• Make an exhaustive list of your strengths, abilities and past experience that supports those career goals.

• Define your preferred employment status -- full-time, part-time, contract.

• Research the companies that you would like to work for.

• Write a thorough, readable resume, which clearly defines your abilities and experience.

• Write a brief, sincere, informative cover letter that explains why you want to work for this particular company, and how you will benefit them.

• Send your resume, letter and samples (if available) to target companies.

Phone Calls

When on the phone with a prospective employer, let the other person do most of the talking. A phone interview should establish your communication skills, not be an opportunity to tell the interviewer your entire career history.

When taking a call from a prospective company or a recruiter, do so when you are ready and comfortable. If a call comes at a bad time, say so and reschedule.

Be prepared, but be yourself.

The employment interview is one of the most important events in a person's experience, because the thirty minutes to one hour spent with the interviewer may determine the entire future course of one's life.

Interviewers are continually amazed at the number of candidates who come to job interviews without any apparent preparation and only the vaguest idea of what they are going to say. Other candidates create an impression of indifference by acting too casual. At the other extreme, a few candidates work themselves into such a state of mind that they seem to be in the last stages of nervous fright.

These marks of inexperience can be avoided by knowing what is expected of you and by making a few simple preparations before the interview.

Preparing For The Interview

Preparation is the first step for a successful interview. Thus, it is important to:

• Know the exact place and time of the interview, the interviewer's full name and correct pronunciation, and the interviewer's title.

• Do your research. It is helpful to know the age of the company, what products or services they supply, where their plants, offices or stores are located, what there growth has been, and what their future growth potential is. There are a number of publications that provide information about prospective employers. Most of them can be found in any college or public library. A brokerage office or your bank may also be able to supply you with pertinent information about companies.

• Prepare the questions you will ask during the interview. Remember that an interview is a "two-way street." The employer will try to determine through questioning if you have the qualifications necessary to do the job. You must determine through questioning whether the company will give you the opportunity for the growth and development you seek.

Some probing questions you might ask:

• Can you provide a detailed description of the position?

• What is the reason the position is available?

• Is there an anticipated indoctrination and training program? Do you get paid during the training?

• Are advanced training programs available for those who demonstrate outstanding ability?

• What are the earnings of successful people in their third to fifth year?

• What are the company's growth plans?

• What is the next step in the hiring process?

Things To Do and Not To Do

You are being interviewed because the employer wants to hire people, not because he wants to trip you up or embarrass you. Through the interaction which will take place during the interview the employer will be searching out your strong and weak points, evaluating you on your qualifications, skills and intellectual qualities, and will probably probe to determine your greatest value.

Creative people can enjoy a more diverse dress style than some other professions. However, be sure to research the interview on this point. If everyone else wears suits, you can expect they will look for the same in prospective employees. Nowadays though, creative agencies have relaxed the expectation of formal dress. Nevertheless, it is usually better to overdress a bit than to be under-dressed.

Drive by the interview site if you have not met people at the job or seen the operation. See how people going in and out of the building dress and what the atmosphere is like. Visiting the site will also ensure that you know how to get there.

More Do's and Don'ts

• DO plan to arrive on time or a few minutes early. Late arrival for a job interview is inexcusable.

• If the employer presents you with an application to complete, DO fill it out neatly and completely.

• DO NOT rely on your application or resume to do your selling for you. Most employers will want you to speak for yourself.

• DO greet the employer by their surname if you are sure of the pronunciation. If you are not, ask them to repeat their name.

• Give the appearance of energy as you walk. Smile! Shake his/her hand firmly. Be genuinely glad to meet the employer.

• DO wait until you are offered a chair before sitting. Sit upright in your chair. Look alert interested at all times. Be a good listener as well as a good talker. Smile.

• DO NOT smoke even if the employer smokes and offers you a cigarette. DO NOT chew gum.

• DO look a prospective employer in the eye.

• DO follow the employer's leads, but try to get the employer to describe the position and the duties to you early on in the interview so that you can relate your background, skills and accomplishments to the position.

• DO NOT interrupt or finish questions for the interviewer.

• DO NOT answer questions with a simple "yes" or "no." Explain briefly but in complete sentences. Tell those things about yourself which relate to the situation.

• DO make sure that your good points get across to the interviewer in a factual, logical, sincere manner. Stress achievements. For example: projects completed, processes developed, savings achieved, systems installed, etc.

• DO NOT lie. Answer questions truthfully, frankly and as "to the point" as possible.

• DO NOT ever make derogatory remarks about your present or former employers or companies.

• DO NOT "over answer" questions. The interviewer may steer the conversation
into politics or economics. Since this can lead to a tricky situation, it is best to answer these questions honestly but briefly.

• DO NOT be defensive, or say any more than is necessary.

• DO NOT inquire about salary, vacations, bonuses, retirement, etc. during the initial interview UNLESS you are positive the employer is interested in hiring you. If the interviewer asks what salary you want, indicate what you have earned but that you are more interested in opportunity than in a specific salary amount at the present.

• DO always conduct yourself as if you are determined to get the job you are discussing, even if you have reservations. Seem interested. Never close the door on an opportunity. It is better to be in a position where you can choose from a number of positions -- rather than only one.

Be Prepared To Answer Questions Like . . .

• Why did you choose this particular vocation?

• Why do you think you might like to work for our company?

• What do you know about our company?

• What qualifications do you have that make you feel that you will be successful in your field?

• What do you think determines a person's progress in a good company?

• Can you get recommendations from previous employers?

• Can you take instructions without feeling upset?

• What is your major weakness?

• What have you done which shows initiative and willingness to work?

• Are you willing to relocate?

• How do you spend your spare time? What are your hobbies?

• What type of books do you read? How many books per year?

• Have you saved any money?

• Do you have any debts?

• What job in our company do you want to work toward?

• What jobs have you enjoyed the most? The least? Why?

• What are your own special abilities?

• What types of people seem to rub you the wrong way?

• Define cooperation.

• Do you like regular hours?

• What contributions to profits have you made in your present or former position to justify your salary level there?

Negative Factors Evaluated By An Employer

During the course of the interview, the employer will be evaluating your negative factors as well as your positive factors. Listed below are negative factors frequently evaluated during the course of the interview and those, which most often lead to the rejection of the candidate:

• Poor personal appearance.

• Overbearing, overaggressive, conceited, "know-it -all."

• Inability to express thoughts clearly: poor poise, diction or grammar.

• Lack of planning for career: no purpose or goals.

• Lack of interest and enthusiasm: passive and indifferent.

• Lack of confidence and poise: nervousness.

• Overemphasis on money: interested only in the best dollar offer.

• Evasive--makes excuses for unfavorable factors in record.

• Lack of tact, maturity, courtesy.

• Condemnation of past employers.

• Failure to look employer in the eye.

• Limp, reluctant handshake.

• Lack of appreciation of the value of experience.

• Failure to ask questions about the job.

• Persistent attitude of "What can you do for me?"

• Lack of preparation for the interview - failure to get information about the company resulting in inability to ask intelligent questions.

What to say and not to say

There are many fatal mistakes that a candidate can make during an interview. Many HR Managers, Department Managers, Vice Presidents and Presidents have talked about the pitfalls of candidates that look good on paper, but in person they lack the skills needed to secure a job opportunity. Here are just a few tips on interviewing that may help you.

• Arrogance, righteousness and the inability to listen will certainly eliminate your chances of receiving an offer.

• Be concise in your conversation and in answering questions. Many candidates talk themselves out of a job by talking too long and get into trouble by being contrary. Limit each response to 60 seconds or less.

• Others are rejected in the interview because they lack enthusiasm and energy. DO NOT put your listener to sleep!

• Show interest, but DO NOT oversell yourself. If you oversell yourself it may come back at you on the job.

• Your job is not only to sell yourself to the interviewer but also to find out if the job is a good fit for you. You do not want to accept something that is going to be counterproductive or not good for your career.

• Prepare for the interview. Be well groomed and neat. Most important, know something about the company, its culture and its competitors. Ask about the needs of the company.

• Have good questions about the job. Ask about the future of the company. Ask the interviewer what kind of person that they are looking for. Then be quiet and LISTEN!

• DO a self-assessment. Be prepared. Be positive and do not put down your previous or present employer.

• Be aware of the interest level of the interviewer and be sure to ask for their card.

• Be on time, do not smoke, drink or chew gum. Thank the interviewer for their time. Close by asking what will be the next step.

• A follow-up call to your recruiter and a thank you letter to the interviewer is a must.

Through volunteerism, internships and work/study programs, you can build your resume and train in art-related work. Ask yourself the following questions:

• Do you have software skills?

• What about imaging software (Photoshop, scanning, layout programs)?

• Do you have graphic arts experience?

• Do you have experience working with prints and/or printers?

• Do you have any language skills, or marketing experience?

• Are you good with people (the public) or are you a back room kind of person?

• What kind of salary or hourly wage/hours do you need to cover living and studio expenses?

• Do you need benefits such as health insurance or a retirement plan? Can you do without it?

• Do you need to work for someone else or do you have the skills and drive to be self-employed?

• Do you need flexible working hours in order to do your work, or can you work a 9-5 job?

• Are you an inside person or an outside person.

• What kind of job would be good for you to learn new skills that will support your artwork?

Look for job listings on the web, in publications, list-servs and at your local university of college. Contact personnel offices at companies that pique your interest. Ask all your friends, your current or former teachers, other artists, professionals, and people who have a high regard for you.
