A New Sister in Christ!

At Church…There was untold joy last Sunday when Auntie Okwuchi (our Math teacher at Right Steps Christian School) stepped forward as an invitation was offered. You can imagine the look on the children’s faces! They all trooped down to the river at the end of service to watch their Auntie put on the Lord in baptism. Fifty-two adults, 33 youth and 85 children watched this momentous occasion.

Truckin’ Along

Have you ever seen this much happiness from riding in the back of a truck? So many things we take for granted…but not at Susana Homes. Our children beg to get in the truck and go—anywhere! It doesn’t matter where…or even whether or not the truck moves. Just being in it is pure joy.

Meet Gift: Our Staff of the Week

Meet Gift Finedaughter Mbuko—a “preacher’s kid” and now a wife to a preacher, too! Gift is the wife of the preacher, Prince, and mother to Precious, Prince Jr. and Prosper. She is popularly and fondly called “Auntie Staff” by all. She was originally employed as the health officer of Susana Homes. (She holds a diploma in Community Nursing.) But then things changed, and today she wears the hats of the health officer, the school nurse, the matron, the mother, and sometimes the child-minder, the cook, and the shopper! Gift does so much—so much so that we can say there would be no Susana Homes without her and her sweet, humble ways. Gift is indeed our gift. Her given name is Finedaughter, but when Prince married her, he changed her name to Gift. We join Prince in saying, “Yes!” to that change. She is truly a gift to all that meet her.

Meet Christie: Our Child of the Week

This week we celebrate CHRISTIE, the beautiful! Christie is Ihechi’s little sister and Big Mike’s big sister. Like Big Mike, Christie is on her second missionary journey, having come before when she was just a shy 4 year old. Now she is 14—turning 15 in a week’s time! Christie is beautiful, smart and really clever. But you wouldn’t know it! Her shy, but sweet smile and unassuming posture belies everything else. If she lived in America, she would be on the honor roll at school just about every week. She is her class captain and holds other posts at school. She engages in all of the cultural dances and displays of the home and school. Her graceful ways endear her to all. When she is not influenced by “class action” (which is a big deal here), she can even be a big help around the house. Christie is pure joy to behold! PRAISE With Us

Thank God, and rejoice with us! All of us were well and healthy this past week!

No illnesses…not even a fever anywhere!!!

This week we return to our school schedule so that we can get back in shape as school reopens next Monday. It has been a holiday like we’ve never had before! This week we wash our uniforms, mend those that need mending, and clean our shoes so we’ll be ready to return. It’s going to be a busy week!

THE 13TH ANNUAL CHURCH OF CHRIST LADIES BIBLE LECTURESHIP: Pray that God will direct our steps as we plan and prepare to serve one another through this event.

CHINASA: Chinasa, a distant relative of Chi’s, arrived at Susana Homes last Friday from Lagos. She has had a growth on her middle toe since 2008. This week, she to the hospital to see what can be done for her. Please pray that the doctors can find some remedy for her ailment.

BRO. CHIBUZOR: Continue to pray for his family, that God will direct their steps as they struggle to understand and resolve the present crisis in their family.

A New Decree…

“NO MORE DIAPERS!” Auntie Chinaza, the play school teacher, decreed. And so… welcome to the world of potty training! Everyone went to work and in one week, here are the results: five big boys and girls in big boy and big girl underwear! It is surprising what we can do when there is a decree! Of course, we still have accidents every now and then, but it is our nursery…with our children…so nobody is keeping a record.

After seeing the five that are now potty trained, we have six more who want to be trained, as well. In fact, they see no reason why they should still wear diapers…as if they were babies! Last week, all you could hear was “No, I’m not a baby!” Auntie Teacher had some treats (cheese balls) ready to pass out to all who would sit at the potty. And so the competition began.

We have never really had to potty train before. Typically, we allowed the children to go at their own pace and master the art of asking to use the bathroom. But this year, and because of play school (our equivalence of day care for home and staff children), Auntie Chinaza insisted on having this done before the school reopens on Monday. So Meso, Zik, Val, Ken and Marve are all ready to start school…in pants, not diapers!

Planning Underway!

The 3^rd planning session of the 13^th Annual Church of Christ Ladies Bible Lectureship was held on Saturday, the 15th. Seventy-two women came together to plan and prepare for the upcoming event. This March, for the 13th year, thousands of women will gather to fellowship, be edified and spiritually revived for the walk with the Lord this year. This event has become one of the spiritual highlights of our lives here in Eastern (and slowly spreading to Midwestern) Nigeria. Even our men have started joining us (in increasing numbers) on that day. This year, while the women will review the life of Dorcas and her service to her community, the men will look at Human Capacity Building and its place in today and tomorrow’s church. Planning to host 2,000-3,000 women in two days is a serious challenge, but it has also become a huge learning experience for our many women who cut across the different levels of our society. This year, we have expanded our horizons—crossing our borders and going into our sister African country of Ghana to bring the Key Note speaker. The women received this information with a resounding ovation on Saturday. We strongly believe that our experiences this year will be deeply spiritual and uplifting. Continue to pray for this event and for all those who will converge here to hear the gospel anew once again.
