But the gyst is this: a school district in California has started a class to educate children that it is wrong to bully gay children or children of gay parents.

Naturally, some people are abhorred by the idea, and feel it is in their right to raise their children to be discriminatory against these freaks.

The lawyer for the special interest group spearheading the lawsuit does make a valid point in that the curriculum "omits children belonging to five other protected classes including race, ethnicity, gender, disability, nationality and religion". Holy shit.

I took a look at a few of the other results, just to get a feel for what others thought of the segment. Here are a few examples:

"Wild nonsense on the Glenn Beck Show crowds out any rational critique of Obamacare. If I were a guest, I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face through something like this." -quicksilber

"So, in Beck's world, Obama's health care reforms are now equivalent to Nazi Eugenics. I'm so pleased that this debate is remaining reasonable." -The Osterley Times

"The allegations Beck made against Emmanuel were typical of his fact-free, hate-filled diatribes. Beck selectively cites passages from Emmanuel’s writings and deposits them about as far from any honest context as he can get. For instance, he alleges that Emmanuel supports rationing of scarce heath care resources based on age or the patient’s projected productivity or some other unspecified cost/benefit analysis. The truth is, Emmanuel’s writings referred specifically to critical situations that required the most difficult decision making." -News Corpse

I responded with this:

“Emmanuel’s writings referred specifically to critical situations that required the most difficult decision making.”

And if you actually listened to Glenn (I know, he is a bit out there sometimes), you would realize that he understands this. That is why he he has mentioned catastrophes (either physical or economic) that would allow the government to make a power grab, just as the neocons did after September 11. Like Rahm said, “you never want a serious crisis to go to waste”.

I would offer this up, though:

“Accepting the complete lives system for health care as a whole would be premature.”

That is from “Principles for allocation of scarce medical interventions”, the paper co-authored by Dr. Emanuel that Beck was quoting from. Have you read it? I have. He says accepting the complete lives system for the entire system would be “premature”. He does not say it would be “impossible” or “impractical”, he says “premature”.

"And he makes plain that he completely supports Sarah Palin's intimations of "death panels" and subscribes to her view that universal health care will bring about euthanasia. In other words, he's a "deather." -Crooks and Liars

"Tonight I watched Glenn Beck utter some of the most hateful propaganda I have ever seen. If he was on any other station, he would have been fired. Hell, if this had been someone talking about the Bush administration, they would have been jailed. First he ran a segment equating public health care to Nazi Eugenics. He actually used his own disabled daughter to back up his lies at one point, implying that public health care would kill her. Every other sentence was "I'm not saying the Democrats are going to kill your grandmother" or something to that effect, but it was always followed with a "but" and then an explanation of how the Democrats are in fact going to try and kill your grandmother. This is clearly the equivalent to shouting "fire" in a crowded theater. He is specifically trying to incite an uprising against the Obama administration. Glenn Beck has become a truly dangerous individual and a traitor. This is not "partisanship" anymore, this is clearly an attempt to incite insurrection against the government of the United States. I ask all of you, if you don't want to see a violent coup d'tat attempt in this country, to call FoxNews and all of their advertisers calling for the immediate removal of Glenn Beck from the air." -some retarded dumbass on some retarded message board

This one takes the cake, gong so far as labeling Beck a traitor. But that is generally how the far-left (and far-right, for that matter) operate. They try to squelch as much dissent and criticism as possible.

Glenn Beck and the threat of eugenics

Above is a clip from Glenn Beck from August 11, 2009. Now, I know a lot of people don't like Beck. However, there are a lot of people that do. I am one of them. I listen to his radio show on occasion, and every once in a while watch clips of his tv show. Some people are put-off by his antics, including his tendency to be a bit emotional, but I do believe that Glenn Beck is genuine. I don't agree with everything he says, just as I do not agree with everything Limbaugh or Olbermann or any other talking head says. But to say that he is always wrong, and to discount everything he says, just because you do not like him is narrow-minded.

Watch the video. He makes a very valid point, and he shows video of Obama talking during the campaign about the people that surround him, the people who shape his views. Glenn goes on to name those people guiding Obama on health care reform, and illustrate their beliefs with actual quotes from these people.

I wanted to see these quotes in context, so I dug them up and posted links to their original sources, where available. They follow.

Ezekiel J. Emanuel: "Substantively, it suggests services that promote the continuation of the polity-those that ensure healthy future generations, ensure development of practical reasoning skills, and ensure full and active participation by citizens in public deliberations-are to be socially guaranteed as basic. Conversely, services provided to individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens are not basic and should not be guaranteed." Source

"When implemented, the Complete Lives System produces a priority curve on which individuals aged between 15 and 40 get the most chance, whereas the youngest and oldest people get the chances that are attenuated." Source (requires registration)

John Holdren, science czar: "The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth, and given the essential early socializing experiences and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth, will ultimately develop into a human being." - Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions, by Paul R. Ehrlich (Author)

More from Mr. Holdren can be found at Zombietime, including tidbits such as these:

"Indeed, it has been concluded that compulsory population-control laws, even including laws requiring compulsory abortion, could be sustained under the existing Constitution if the population crisis became sufficiently severe to endanger the society."
----------
"The development of a long-term sterilizing capsule that could be implanted under the skin and removed when pregnancy is desired opens additional possibilities for coercive fertility control. The capsule could be implanted at puberty and might be removable, with official permission, for a limited number of births."
----------
"If this could be accomplished, security might be provided by an armed international organization, a global analogue of a police force. Many people have recognized this as a goal, but the way to reach it remains obscure in a world where factionalism seems, if anything, to be increasing. The first step necessarily involves partial surrender of sovereignty to an international organization."

Fear

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 284px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Hr3VQdBgGuM/SoIClIGcbYI/AAAAAAAAArI/2mcgNNybnhY/s400/800px-Stroop_Report_-_Warsaw_Ghetto_Uprising_06.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368856542631980418" />

I stumbled across this photo last night, entirely by accident. I had seen it before though, more than twenty years ago, and I recognized it instantly. Seeing it again made me catch my breath.

I had never forgotten it. It always rose to the surface of my memory when I would read a book or an article about The Holocaust, or watched a documentary, or really anything related to the 1940s. I never remember the details. I just remember the little boy to the right of center. It chilled me when I first saw the picture, and it continues to chill me now. Hands raised in the air, a look of fear and helplessness on his face as a soldier stood behind him, machine gun in hand.

Palin and the Obama death panels

No doubt you have heard about Sarah Palin and <a href="http://apnews.myway.com/article/20090808/D99UJ4B00.html"target="_blank">her fear that President Obama would create a "death panel" that would deny care to Americans who need the care most. When I first heard about her comment, I thought to myself "Wow, that's a helluva way to convince the American people you're not a paranoid nutjob."

But the more I thought about it, the more I decided that she has a valid fear. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that since many people who know me also consider me a paranoid nutjob.

The Holocaust did not happen over night. The first extermination camp was not constructed in Germany until nearly a decade after the first laws were introduced to remove Jews from society. This is an extreme example, but serves to illustrate my point: when a door is opened and power is held by those who would wield it with malice, tragedy can occur.

Hitler was not idolized and worshipped because of a platform to exterminate Jews from society, but rather a soaring oratory and ideals rooted in nationalism. The Holocaust happened not simply because the German people wanted it, but because the German people handed Hitler and the Nazis the power to commit their heinous acts.

So am I comparing Hitler to President Obama? Nor directly, so please do not make the accusation.

Many people on the left talk about contributing to society as a whole, and seem to diminish the importance of self. They talk about operating as a collective, and what is good for the collective is good for all. To think or speak otherwise reveals one as simply being selfish.

So if the collective is bearing the cost of the collective's healthcare, then why would the collective hesitate to exterminate (via denial of care) a person if that person's healthcare would prove to be a drain on the collective's resources? It surely wouldn't be due to any moral or ethical objection. Germany is proof that a society will turn a blind eye to the atrocities of a beloved leader if that leader speaks to them in soaring rhetoric.

The federal government has already grown to a size and scope which is unsustainable. Medicare will be insolvent within eight years. Social Security will pay out more than it takes in within thirty years or so. It would make sense to remove those which are most costly to the long-term financial health of the collective.

That is what Palin is talking about. That is what I am talking about. President Obama is not proposing nationalized healthcare, but that is the endgame in all of this talk of "healthcare reform". He has admitted it, and so have many members of the Democratic Party. It is in our best interests, in the best interests of society, to regard whatever the federal government proposes with a wary eye.

And keep a close eye on that door.

Liberals are so witty and smart

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 148px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Hr3VQdBgGuM/Sn9Jmu44lfI/AAAAAAAAAqo/y5o-EvuEyZY/s400/socialism.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368090210619397618" />

You can click the image above to make it, you know, legible.

This is a perfect example of what irritates me about liberals. Before long, they will be two big, white elephants that cannot be ignored. Pelosi, Reid, and Obama will have to allow these bills to come to the floor. It would be nice to see the mainstream media run with the story on this issue a little more than they have. But I think it's pretty obvious that they are not going to do so until the issue cannot be ignored any longer.

I read any interesting comment on another site the other day. A reader asked why there would be resistance for these bills to pass. Another reader commented that if the books were opened up, and we were permitted to see what is going on behind those doors at the Federal Reserve, it would simply serve to hasten the collapse of the system.

Interesting thought.

A heart-wrenching read

Cyrus Thatcher as a rifleman. The final letter is the one he wrote in the event of his death.

I do not recall the last time I was moved to tears in such a manner as I was after reading this.

'Hello mum, this is going to be hard for you to read ...'

Britain's NHS elects to allow patient to die rather than receive a liver transplant

Pic: The Sunday Times
<a href="http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Alcoholic-22-Dies-After-Being-Refused-Life-Saving-Liver-Transplant/Article/200907315342299?lpos=UK_News_Carousel_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15342299_Alcoholic%2C_22%2C_Dies_After_Being_Refused_Life-Saving_Liver_Transplant"target="_blank">Man, 22, Dies After Liver Transplant Refused

Very sad, very thought-provoking article from Sky News. I hate to use a person's death as fodder for political debate, but I do believe this situation does raise legitimate questions.

Many in this country desire the federal government to take control of health care. Put aside all of the arguments about efficiency or profits or anything else, and for a moment, just focus on the patient. Those on the left, and many blissfully ignorant moderates, believe government will be able to administer better health care than insurance companies, or even the doctors themselves.

I do not believe it a stretch to say that if this patient had been covered by private insurance, he would still be alive. Granted, the insurance company footing the bill for the transplant would have fought tooth and nail to avoid paying out, but they would have paid, and then dumped him after the fact. But he would have a new liver, and a new shot at life.

The British NHS did not allow him that opportunity. They looked at his file and decided he did not deserve a new liver. In essence, they decided to allow him to die.

That is far, far too much power to be placed into the hands of a bureaucrat in Washington.

Edit: After doing some more research on the issue of transplants, it appears as if Mr. Reinbach would have been denied a new liver in the US, as well.

A perfect example of why Republicans are not always conservative

From the -- shudder -- New York Times:

Senate Votes to Add Sexual Orientation to Hate Crime Protections

Here are two sections taken from the article linked above.

Republicans countered that the hate crimes expansion should not be part of a Pentagon measure and argued that it would usurp the rights of states to pursue such crimes since most have their own versions of the law.

“Federal courts were not created to adjudicate local crimes, no matter how heinous they may be,” said Senator Jon Kyl, Republican of Arizona.

Six paragraphs later, there is this:

Once they dispose of the hate crime proposals, the Senate is set to consider as part of the Pentagon bill a Republican plan to allow those permitted to carry concealed weapons in one state to take the firearm into other states without violating any laws. It is the latest gun-rights issue to surface in Congress.

“A state’s border should not be a limit on this fundamental right,” said Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, who is the author of the proposal.

So on the one hand, you've got a Republican expressing concern that enacting a certain federal law would usurp a state's right in the prosecution of violent crimes. Ok, fine. My question is over the last few decades, exactly how has the federal government taken into consideration state rights? Blood-alcohol levels, seat belts, marijuana, motorcycle helmets... the federal government has a history of flexing their muscles (the pocketbook) in order to force states to do their bidding.

And then later, in the exact same article, you have another Republican declaring that a state's border should not impede on an individual's right to carry a concealed weapon. So which is it? Do Republicans give a shit about state rights, or is that only when it fits their agenda?

Tom Watson on the verge of history

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 122px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Hr3VQdBgGuM/SmJIcSW9sZI/AAAAAAAAApk/zUZOrXnx_zs/s200/tomwatson.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359926157326004626" />As I was watching The Open Championship this afternoon, I started thinking about the significance of what Tom Watson was doing. Here is a man -- a kind, classy, respectable man -- less than two months away from his 60th birthday, and he is the 54 hole leader. He's not just leading today; he also led the first and second rounds.

I don't think I am prone to hyperbole, but I am going to go out and say that if he wins tomorrow, I will consider his feat to be the greatest in the history of the game. (Edit: On second thought, Tiger Woods winning the US Open two years ago with a fractured leg would probably qualify for that distinction.)

Tom Watson is 59 years-old. Granted, golf is not a physical game, not when compared to football or tennis or basketball. But it is still a young man's game. If you look at recent major champions, you rarely see anyone over the age of forty. The game is dominated by twenty and thirty somethings. Just as in any other sport, a players skills (power, feel, coordination) diminish as he gets older, to the point that winning a major championship is next to impossible. The last time Watson won on the PGA Tour was elevel years ago. The last time he won a major was 26 years ago, at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

I believe Watson will win tomorrow, and I will be cheering him on mightily from my couch as he does it. Tom Watson personifies the very best qualities that make up a champion, and watching him today was a privilege.

Looking for a roommate

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 313px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Hr3VQdBgGuM/SmEkHgybMwI/AAAAAAAAApM/DGszqhujZX4/s320/wisdomRoommate.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359604743026717442" />So, as I stated in a previous post, I am looking for a rommate. The whole process has me in a bit of a tizzy.

I have had several roommates over the last decade or so. When I got out of the Navy ten years ago, I moved in with my best friend and his wife. It was a decent arrangement, although we didn't entirely hash out the financial arrangements properly and there ended up being hard feelings.

I have lived with my (douchebag) brother a couple times. Both times, it didn't really end too well. The first time, he got shipped off to prison for smacking around his psychotic girlfriend. The second time, he just couldn't keep his fucking nose out of my business.

I lived with the sister of a friend when I lived in Fort Wayne. That didn't go to well, and she eventually got kicked out. She had this nasty little weiner dog that she kept locked up in the laundry room. (It shat all over the place, and would howl in despair throughout the night. When I finally took the dog to the shelter, I think she was crazy.)

Before she got kicked out, I came home from work one day to find this object laying in the middle of the living room floor. At first glance, I thought it was a cigar tube. Of course, I thought that even though I had never seen her smoking a cigar. I bent down to pick it up, and just as I was about to grab it, alarms started sounding in my head.

Cigar tubes do not have on/off switches. Yep. The damn hooch left her vibrator lying in the middle of the effing living room.

I currently live with my step-sister's boyfriend. He's a good kid, and when we first moved in we spent a lot of time together and came to be good friends. I don't see him much anymore, with his work and school and girlfriend. He decided not to move with me to the house, and that saddens me, but life goes on.

So now, I am searching for another roommate. I placed an ad on three websites, one of them being Craigslist. I have received three responses. They are all female, and I am not entirely sure how I feel about that.

I was about to say that I do not connect that well with females, but that is not entirely accurate since I do not connect well with many people at all, gender aside. I'm not sure how I feel about living with a female, especially one I do not know. The way the house is arranged, we will not need to see each other much. And I do not expect to become best friends with whoever moves in with me. But I would at least like to be able to get to know this person a little bit so that when we are in the same area (kitchen, dining room), it's not just awkward silence.

This is what sucks about looking for a roommate. I don't exactly have a huge pool of friends to draw from, so I have to look outside of my tiny little circle. I have envisioned a hundred different ways things could go wrong. Glenn Beck yelled at a caller the other day, and instantly people are saying that he has lost his mind. I guarantee that if the day comes that he does lose his mind, it will put this segment to shame.

I listened to the segment, and admittedly laughed my ass off. He got to do what I want to do every freaking day. I'll agree with some and question where the hell he got some of the statements he made while arguing with the caller, but there is no doubt that woman rarely (if ever) listened to Beck's show. I consider Ron Paul to be a visionary in that he has campaigned on and proposed a system of government which flies in the face of how our elected leaders have conducted business over the last 80 years. It really all boils down to The Constitution and the Founders.

I agree with him when he says the "Keynes has lost this and people are starting to recognize the system doesn't work". The Keynesians are making a last ditch effort to take control of as much as they possibly can. But they will fail. The people (us) will not tolerate what they have done, and continue to do, and there will be radical change. The question is how much more damage will they do before the people revolt? How long will they prolong our recovery?

Ron Paul: Healthcare is not a right

I couldn't find a copy of the video to embed, <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/tech-ticker/article/281590/Healthcare-Is-%22Not-a-Right%22-and-Obama%27s-Plan-Will-Cost-Way-Beyond-1T-Ron-Paul-Says?tickers=^dji,^GSPC,pph,jnj,mrk,pfe,unh"target="_blank">so you can watch it at Yahoo Finance. The several times I have read it, they have come across as pretty much just a left-wing rag. <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/29127316/the_great_american_bubble_machine/1"target="_blank">An article by Matt Taibbi, however, entitled "The Great American Bubble Machine", has blown me away.

A few pieces of note from the article follow, but I highly encourage you to head on over to Rolling Stone and read the article in its entirety. It will amaze you, and it will also piss you off as you realize just how impotent the citizenry of this nation really is.

Read this article several times, understand the implications, and pass it on to friends and family.

On a side note, what I find to be hilarious is the fact that the article doesn't point the finger of guilt at Bush so much as the Clinton administration.

A fascinating read.

Edit: I also wanted to point out something else. Since 1989, Lloyd Blankfein has donated $193,890 to political parties, candidates, and special interest groups. Of those donations, $5,000 have gone to Republican candidates, and over $130,000 to Democrats. But look at what the second paragraph above says.

"President Barack Obama has proposed making the Fed the chief U.S. systemic risk regulator..."

I fail to understand how giving such wide, sweeping powers (more than they already have) to a private institution can be a benefit to the people of this country. As it is now, the Federal Reserve is pretty much immune from any oversight from Congress. All of the hearings you see on television are pretty much bullshit as Congress does not have access to the Federal Reserve's books. Congress (and by extension, the people) have no idea what is going on with the Fed.

President Obama, by proposing the transfer of these powers to the Federal Reserve, is actually decreasing transparency and openness in the federal government. So much for "change".

Ron Paul, one of the few politicians in Washington worth a shit, has authored and written a bill entitled H.R. 1207: Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009. And you know what? The bill is actually only one page long and very easy to understand. The House bill has 260 co-sponsors as of today. The Senate bill, S. 604 (exactly like the bill introduced by Mr. Paul) has eight co-sponsors.

(On a side note, the Senate bill was introduced by Bernie Sanders, a goddamned Socialist! Think about that for a minute and you will understand the importance of this bill. The House version has massive support, with almost 60% of the House co-sponsoring this bill. The House version was written and introduced by Ron Paul, a small government, Libertarian kind of politician. The Senate version, which was copied word-for-word from Paul's bill, was introduced by Bernie Sanders, a big government Socialist. Here you have two politicians who are polar opposites in ideology, and they have managed to rally massive support around this bill.)

Let me ask you this question: why would any elected politician wish to oppose this bill? I can understand why the Federal Reserve would wish to see this bill killed. But why would Harry Reid block the bill from coming to the floor? What is his motivation for keeping the goings-on at the Federal Reserve so secret? Why would President Obama wish to hand even more authority to this corporation, a corporation with virtually no oversight? Why would any politician not support this bill? What is the Federal Reserve up to that they do not want us to see?

Eyecandy: Guy Delfo

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Hr3VQdBgGuM/SlqDydXuIII/AAAAAAAAAoE/gyTQD8TtYAk/s400/guy+delfo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357739609611444354" />It doesn't really happen that often. Sarah Palin said she plans to jump immediately back into the national political fray — stumping for conservative issues and even Democrats — after she prematurely vacates her elected post at month's end.

The former Republican vice-presidential nominee and heroine to much of the GOP's base said in an interview she views the electorate as embattled and fatigued by nonstop partisanship, and she is eager to campaign for Republicans, independents and even Democrats who share her values on limited government, strong defense and "energy independence."

Her motives are still unknown, but unless you are a completely mind-numbed partisan hack, you have to admit that she is on the right track. Our country is so distracted by partisan rancor that we are unable to see the big picture: what is best for the nation as a whole.

The Democrat Party does not represent the best interests of the nation. And neither does the Republican Party. In our current political system (which would never tolerate how I personally believe the government should be run), the answer is to be found in the middle. Take a little from both party, and that is what is best for the nation as a whole.

So I'm moving... again

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Hr3VQdBgGuM/SlkZdqwlJcI/AAAAAAAAAn0/cX-pM1LIk8E/s320/outside.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357341229218866626" />I live in a dumpy apartment now, and in a couple weeks I will be moving into a big dumpy house. Long story short: it's a house my mom bought for my brother to rent and the piece of shit douchebag stuck with the payments and moved out. So I'm moving in. My roommate isn't going with me, and that makes me sad, but this will at least give me a trial run at what I want to do.

You see, I have been thinking about "self-sufficiency". I want to have a house (not a big house, not a nice house, just a house... I'd even settle for a trailer) with a little bit of land. I want to have a huge garden. I want to have chickens. I want to collect the eggs from the hens and slaughter them for food. I want to be able to feed myself off of what I grow and raise. I want to can and preserve and give away to my neighbors or sell any of my excess. In short, I want to be able to provide for myself.

I'm a bit of a Doomer. Now, there are different kinds of Doomers. There are the Doomers who think the world is going to come to an end if people of the same sex are permitted to freely have sex with each other. Then there are the Doomers who believe "peak oil" is upon us, and our civilization is going to fall into a massive die-off of population to due the lack of cheap oil. There are Doomers who believe the world financial system is on the brink of collapse, and our fiat currency will be worthless in the coming years.

I'm a Doomer consisting a bit of each of the latter two. The Doomers of the first group are welcome to lick my coin sack.

My family openly thinks I am nuts, and many people reading this no doubt will, too. That's fine.

Anyway, I want to have a Doomstead of my own where I can grow my garden and feed my chickens. As it is now, all of the food I consume is made by some faceless corporate monstrosity. I do not buy my food at Wal-Mart, but aside from a farmer's market, no matter where you from the product is invariably shit. Pumped full of antibiotics and steroids, or doused in insecticides, from animals raised head to ass in cramped, unsanitary conditions to vegetables processed by machines and lacking any form of freshness by the time it gets to the supermarket.

Yeah, I want to grow my own shit. Kill my own chickens and make omelettes from their offspring.

So over the coming year I will catalogue my progress right here. And if you give a shit you can read along, and make fun of me.

Gay couple cuffed & stuffed... by Mormons

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 146px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Hr3VQdBgGuM/Slf1Vf0Xu3I/AAAAAAAAAnc/5i0U5XidYTQ/s200/ldschurch2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357020031447710578" /><a href="http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_12811907"target="_blank">Gay couple cuffed, cited after kiss near LDS temple

From The Salt Lake Tribune:

A gay couple says they were detained by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints security guards after one man kissed another on the cheek Thursday on Main Street Plaza.

"They targeted us," said Matt Aune, 28. "We weren't doing anything inappropriate or illegal, or anything most people would consider inappropriate for any other couple."

Aune and his partner, Derek Jones, 25, were cited by Salt Lake City police for trespassing on the plaza, located at 50 East North Temple, according to Sgt. Robin Snyder.

In a written statement, church spokeswoman Kim Farah denied the two were singled out for being gay.

"Two individuals came on church property and were politely asked to stop engaging in inappropriate behavior -- just as any other couple would have been," she said. She declined to comment on what is considered inappropriate behavior, and on the rules governing the plaza.

Evidently, the area where the affectionate gentlemen were detained was public property at one point, although that property came to be owned by the church after a deal with the city.

The kiss happened on a former public easement given up by city in 2003 in a controversial land-swap deal. The easement became private property, allowing the church to ban protesting, smoking, sunbathing and other "offensive, indecent, obscene, lewd or disorderly speech, dress or conduct," church officials said at the time.
