Rihcycle LIES & Gets Put On Blast

LOS ANGELES/EWORLDWIRE/Nov. 5, 2009 — Pop singer Rihanna recently made a widely publicized statement to Glamour Magazine that she wants to “shed light on the reality of domestic violence.” The National Coalition For Men (NCFM) calls on Rihanna to discuss her own reported violence against Brown as well if she wants to shed light on the problem honestly.

According to court records and other sources, Rihanna struck Brown in the face “numerous times” before Brown assaulted her (’http://news.ninemsn.com.au/entertainment/768865/rihanna-hit-chris-brow…’). NCFM purports although that would not justify his more severe assault, her violence should not be ignored, and if she does not “woman up” to it then her message will be the usual one-sided double standards that leave female perpetration covered up.

The saying, “There is no excuse for domestic violence,” applies to both sexes. Female violence in relationships is not rare but is often hypocritically deemed acceptable or humorous, such as in the film, Sideways. It is part of the cycle of domestic violence, which cannot be stopped without addressing the problem honestly. Children are damaged just by witnessing domestic violence, regardless of its severity.

A 32-nation study by the University of New Hampshire found women are as violent and as controlling as men in relationships worldwide (’http://www.unh.edu/news/cj_nr/2006/may/em_060519male.cfm?type=n’,
‘http://pubpages.unh.edu/~mas2/ID41E2.pdf’).

A major study funded by the Centers for Disease Control found one-fourth of heterosexual relationships had violence and: “half (49.7%) of those were reciprocally violent. In nonreciprocally violent relationships, women were the perpetrators in more than 70% of the cases.” (’http://www.ajph.org/cgi/content/abstract/97/5/941′)

The same study also found “while injury was more likely when violence was perpetrated by men, in relationships with reciprocal violence it was the men who were injured more often (25% of the time) than were women (20% of the time).” (’http://pn.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/42/15/31-a’)

Over 200 studies now confirm the same thing, that “women are as physically aggressive, or more aggressive, than men in their relationships with their spouses or male partners,” as California State University Professor Martin Fiebert shows in his online bibliography at ‘http://www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm’. This data is more reliable than criminal justice data because men are less likely to report the violence or to respond positively to crime surveys because society still does not consider female violence as much of a crime.

If Rihanna sincerely wants to raise awareness about domestic violence, NCFM calls on her to be forthcoming about her own violence and to address the problem honestly.

Billboard announced today (Aug. 25) that Beyoncé will be accepting its Woman Of The Year Award at the 2009 Billboard Women In Music Event, taking place on Oct. 2 in New York City.
The honor, given to a female recording artist that has inspired the music business with her success, leadership and new ideas, will be awarded to the singer for her accomplishments over the past 12 months.

In the last year, Beyoncé kicked off her world tour "I Am..." in support of her third solo album "I Am...Sasha Fierce," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in November and features the hit singles "If I Were A Boy," "Single Ladies," "Halo," "Ego" and "Sweet Dreams."

The tour also showcased Beyoncé's philanthropic side as she gave 2,500 tickets to families affected by the auto industry crisis in Detroit and joined forces with General Mills Hamburger Helper and Feeding America to deliver 3.5 million meals to local food banks.

Keri Hilson

Her ridiculous tribute to Michael Jackson at the BET Awards in June sealed the deal - the girl can't sing a lick. Fortunately, the King of Pop was not there to see the painfully corny, out of breath, and off-key "tribute" to his genius. (She chanted "Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson" in the middle of "Knock You Down" and did not dance but struck random poses instead.) Keri Hilson was a behind-the-scenes type artist before the release of In a Perfect World..., writing songs for the likes of Britney Spears and Ciara. In a Perfect World, Ms. Hilson would have kept it that way.

Kanye West

Kanye, Kanye, Kanye. His most recent album brought tears to the eyes of many. What we hoped would be an emotional and insightful reflection on his life, his dealing with the death of his mother was instead a whiny, sickeningly emo lamentation over his breakup with Alexis Pheifer. It should have been awesome, it was instead pathetic. Even with the help of autotune, it was still clear that underneath the vocal manipulations, Kanye did not sing one single note on key. Our boy should stick to rapping and realize that he can't do everything well!

Cassie

The mystery of whether Cassie could actually sing or not was quickly put to bed with an embarrassingly dreadful performance of "Me & You" on "106 and Park." Since then, we have seen almost one of her on the charts, save for her thankfully small contribution on Ryan Leslie's "Addiction" last year. Her lack of talent is enough to make anyone suspicious on how she even got a record deal. It might have something to do with the fact that Diddy was, well, Diddying her if you catch our drift!

Ciara

It is extremely fortunate that she can dance, because Ciara only sings a few notes per song. Just listen to her music. On Her very first hit, "Goodies," she sings exactly one note for most of the track. How is that possible? There is little else to say. You have to hear it for yourself.

Britney Spears

Ms. Spears is an obvious choice, being notorious for her lip-synching. Her voice is tweaked by so many computers, it is doubtful that we have ever heard what she truly sounds like. Her singing is a combination of moaning and whispering, instead of actual note hitting. But damn can this girl entertain. Her tunes are catchy and she knows how to put on a show. Though it would be nice to have a pop superstar who can sing as well as she can perform, America has accepted Britney as its favorite popstar. In the end, it really doesn't matter if she can carry a tune or not.

Madonna

Madge is another one of America's favorite popstars. She's been around for so long, but certainly not because we adore the sound of her voice. The girl could never sing. She squeaked and shrieked through her hits like "Borderline" in the 80s, and today, she can barely even whisper a tune. Justin Timberlake stole her shine in the 2008 hit "4 Minutes." Madonna's wavering voice was barely there, so much that it sounded like she was reciting bad spoken word instead of singing. In her recent single, "Celebration," she just sounds tired. Her voice is weak. Perhaps if she spent less time pumping iron, and more time strengthening her voice, she wouldn't sound as weak and wishy-washy as she does on her tracks today.

Rihanna

Rihanna is another popstar who is just a pretty face. The way she stomps around the stage makes one hope that she can at least make up for her lack of stage presence with a powerhouse voice. But alas, when she sings it sounds as if someone is holding her nose as she tries to make her ears pop.

Beyonce uses this “Sasha Fierce” character as an alter-ego, but she seems fairly fierce by nature. Maybe Sasha Demure would be a more fitting alter-ego, as she, or they, showed over the weekend at Encore Theater. Beyonce is drop-your-schoolbooks gorgeous, but she’ll also rip your face off if you lie to her. I believe those are the lyrics to one of her songs, actually.

Beyonce was as convincing a performer as I’ve seen in Las Vegas. You can write thousands of words about this woman, but when you get chills during a performance, that’s enough verification that it was a great show. It’s possible she hypnotized the audience. There were moments when I would have crawled on my lips to Pahrump for this woman if she’d asked.

She was 40 minutes late Sunday, but so what? I blamed her video crew for that, which recorded the show for an upcoming DVD to be titled “An Intimate Night With Beyonce.” But she was late for her other Encore appearances, too. Beyonce’s late for her engagements, but again, so what? About a minute into the show, about the amount of time it took for her to stride down the aisle whence she entered to the teeming-with-female-musicians stage, I thought this is the type of performer who could ring the bell regularly at a larger venue. The Colosseum, for instance. The people there don’t care to discuss specifically who might grace The Colosseum’s stage, other than those already booked, but that would be a pairing worth celebrating.

As it was, Beyonce threw an electric charge into the Wynn/Encore operation at a badly needed moment. Each show was an announced sellout at the 1,500-seat showroom (which, in a jarring contrast in genres, recently hosted a one-night stand by Larry King in June), with ticket packages and prices ranging from $250 to $1,000. As Wynn spokeswoman Jennifer Dunne said in a statement, “Beyonce's exclusive engagement at Wynn Las Vegas' Encore Theater was a resounding success this past weekend! The superstar created an intimate spectacle for fans, VIPs and celebrities that had the entire resort buzzing for days. Beyonce's incredible talent was showcased with superb staging created specifically for the intimate venue. … The engagement proved an incredible success for Wynn and Encore. With sold-out shows, both gaming and non-gaming revenues exceeded all expectations.”

Seems like I’m not the only one under Beyonce’s spell. One quibble I do have is that, during the autobiographical stretch, the 27-year-old, one-woman conglomerate spoke of all she has been through to reach this level of success. As a friend noted afterward, we’re not exactly looking at a Johnny Cash-like resurrection from the depths of hell here. Losing in the first round of “Star Search” can’t be fun, but Beyonce is on the kind of hot streak only legends enjoy. We need more of her type around here.

Two women at Sunday’s show, seated about 10 rows in front of me, were impossible to miss. They wore what seemed to be a fusion of geisha and nightclub attire and were among the first to stand and groove when the tempo quickened. I caught them in the lobby after the performance. They were Masae Isoda and Mayumi Kawasaki of Osaka, Japan, who paid $1,000 apiece for tickets to Sunday’s show. They said their pink-splashed dresses were not traditional in the traditional sense, but indeed a geisha-inspired design they packed just for the show. They also had their nails done professionally. Masae is a homemaker and Mayumi works at a rental car business. They said they first learned of the shows in Vegas when Beyonce mentioned them on a YouTube clip. “She said the crowds in Japan were not so good,” Mayumi said. “But we love her! We wish (the show) was longer. We will see her world tour when it comes to Japan.”

A friend e-mailed with the following praise for Beyonce: "I really do have to give her and Kim Kardashian credit for bringing back the bubble butt."

Without being aware of any trends regarding the bubble butt, it’s worth noting that when Forbes named Beyonce No. 3 on its list of Top 100 celebrities in June, “bubble butt promotion” was not one of the criteria. Butt whatever works, eh?
