Robin and I recently presented the Financial Empowerment Seminar in Toronto. Before the lunch break the organizers handed out menus from the restaurant so people could order their lunch during the break.
It was with great interest that we watched people scrutinize the menus before placing their orders. It struck me that we often spend more time planning a meal than we do the rest of our lives.

Be Prepared:

1.Build your database, and build relationships with those in your database.
2.Build relationships with like-minded business owners who understand and use Joint Ventures.
3.Make sure you have built a good base in Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter.
4.Get yourself a solid website and Blog.
5.Start practising setting up lucrative Joint Ventures right away.
6.Start thinking outside the box, especially regarding barter.
7.Start reducing your risk.
8.Focusing on profit instead of only on sales. Joint Ventures all bring in 100% profit with little time or risk.
9.The Internet and Social Media have become a huge force in the world, and Joint Ventures allow us to utilize the Internet and Social Media to benefit financially.
The distribution and dissemination of useful, practical information via ebooks, Blogs, ezines, and websites is a huge benefit to business – IF they are used effectively.

their dream? As you know the 78th publisher said "Yes", and the rest is history!

On a recent DollarMakers Women's Club conference call one of our members spoke about 2011 being a time of turbulence. She said that we would see a lot of changes happening and that old paradigms won't work any longer. Our caller continued that there will be a lot of new opportunities and ended by saying "It's not the end of the world, but the end of the world as we know it".

I wrote the above introduction before the Earthquake in Japan!

Here's an insert from a letter from Anne as she wrote to family and friends from Japan: "Somehow at this time I realize from direct experience that there is indeed an enormous cosmic evolutionary step that is occurring all over the world right at this moment. And somehow as I experience the events happening now in Japan, I can feel my heart opening very wide. My brother asked me if I felt so small because of all that is happening. I don't. Rather, I feel a part of something happening that is much larger than myself. This wave of birthing (worldwide) is hard, and yet magnificent."

We have already seen many changes, and now is the time to prepare and be ready for the new opportunities coming our way.

1.Diversify
Spread and diversify your income sources, removing risk, and dramatically reducing overheads.

2.Joint Ventures

Robin J. Elliott recently wrote a very interesting article. He warns us that the world is changing and that we need to be prepared.

You're Gonna Miss This

My Daughter Sacha posted this comment on facebook about our 5 year old grandson Joseph Joubert who is Down Syndrome.

“Nobody can live in the moment like Joey can. I think it's to do with his extra chromosome. It's the laughing-at-slap-stick-humour-and-finding-joy-in-cupcakes-and-hugs Chromosome.”

Good Morning America recently compiled a list of the most popular Self-Help Books From Amazon. It was a very interesting list starting with "Peace From Broken Pieces" by Iyanla Vanzant. She was a recent guest on the Oprah show where she told Oprah how she went from rags to riches and how she lost her money, her husband, friendships as well as dealing with the death of her beloved daughter.

The number 10 book was "The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have" by Mark Nepo.
Trace Adkins in this country song called "You're Gonna Miss This” reminds us to enjoy the process. The first verse is about a teenage girl being taken to school by her dad. She is, anxious to finish high school. In the second verse the same girl, now a newly-wed, is anxious to get out of her first apartment and into a house with kids. The next verse finds her dad dropping by for a visit. The girl, now a young women has a house full of kids and a plumber working on a broken water heater.

Creating multiple streams of income and setting up Joint Ventures take very little time and money and gives us the opportunity to do the things that are important in our lives and to spend more time with our loved ones.

As women we multitask and we are so busy being busy. Take a deep breath and focus on the big picture. Take Mark Nepo's advice. Be present in the moment because you will miss those times!Robin and I will be doing just that. We are flying to Cuba for a week to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.

International Women's Day

Women across the world celebrated the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day this past week. It was with great interest that I read an article written by Irena Pochop in the local Tri-city News. She is with theTri-City Transitions Society (formerly Tri-City Women’s Resource Society).

She wrote in her article on Wednesday March 9, 2011 that in Canada we have made great strides in women’s education and women’s rights over the past century. She continues that “ Canada boasts that women make up the majority of full-time students in most university faculties, that the current government has the highest percentage of women in cabinet in Canadian history, and that women’s employment has risen to 74.3% in the last decade alone.”

She goes on to state that “the last 100 years have shown how enriched Canadian society can be by the meaningful work and involvement of our women.”
Irena further states that “This communal and global value of women’s education is acknowledged poignantly in the old Chinese saying: “To plan for a day, catch a fish; to plan for a year, plant rice; to plan for a decade, plant a tree; but to plan for a lifetime, educate a girl.”

We are all aware that there is much room for improvement, but we are heading in the right direction. I encourage you to be inspired by the many women that have gone ahead of us, showing us that “we can do great things”

I would love to hear who some of the women are that have inspired you.

We are surrounded by so many wonderful women. In British Columbia Christie Clark was voted leader of the BC Liberals and the next premier in February 2011. You might not agree with her politics, but I love to celebrate the achievements of other women.
We can all make a contribution in our way. Joint Ventures gives us the opportunity to make the changes not only in our own lives but also to enrich the lives of the people around us. I recommend “How to Create Wealth for Life Using Joint Ventures”

A lot of people are going through a hard time right now, for a million different reasons.

We all know intellectually that we only fail when we quit, that it’s never too late to bounce back, and that we can come back stronger than ever before.

Customize Your Elevator Speech

An elevator speech is a brief introduction of who you are and what you do.

What to say

1. Introduce yourself
2. What do you do. Your product or service
3. Who your market is
4. What makes you different. What is your Unique Selling Proposition
For example, you can use, “You know how? Well, what we do is...” E.G “You know how a lot of coaches use cookie cutter solutions that never really fit anyone? Well, what we do is listen carefully to your unique situation and then customize a solution, using our many years of experience.”

Tips

1. Keep it brief and to the point.
2. No hard selling. Be subtle.
3. Remember the end game. What do you want to achieve? How will you make money?
4. Keep your options open. As a Joint Venture broker, you have many options!

Action steps

1. Exchange businesses cards.
2. Ask for referrals.
3. Send a SendOut Card.
4. Set up a future meeting.
5. Follow up by telephone and email.

Take time to write your elevator speech. It's a good idea to practice, so that you will be comfortable and confident delivering it. Speak slowly, smile, relax, and enjoy yourself.

How Do You Eat a Guava?

Recently, while shopping at our local grocery store, I was thrilled to see they had fresh guavas on sale. What attracted me to that corner of the store first was the wonderful aroma of this tropical fruit. We used to eat them in South Africa. We would eat them fresh, in fruit salad, juiced, and canned. Canned guavas with custard was an old favourite. Since living in Canada, the only time we've really seen them is when on holiday in Cuba or Mexico. When I found them in the store that day, I brought them home and left them out where we can surround ourselves with a wonderful reminder of blue skies and long, sunny days.

I was surprised when a woman in the store came up to me and asked me a strange question. She saw the guavas and was attracted to them but, was not sure what to do with them Her question for me was “How do you eat a guava?”

Dr Nancy D. O'Reilly says, "As you know, if you're looking for anything, a place, a service or some good advice, who do you ask? A woman, of course! Women are the greatest Yellow Pages resource ever. If you like what she is wearing, or reading, or the cut and colour of her hair, a woman is happy to tell you all about it. Is this a maternal, hormonal trait, or just social training? Whatever the cause, women will open up to the universe and help just about anyone."

Weight Watchers

Weight Watchers launched a very aggressive ad campaign at the end of 2010. Jennifer Hudson was spurring us on to join and lose the extra pounds.

At the meetings I attend, the numbers increased dramatically at the beginning of the year and the meeting will have to move to a larger venue. It will be interesting to see how many people will keep it up or give up.

“Now, how does this apply to me?” I can hear you asking.

It is easy to join anything. Being successful does not happen overnight. Signing up to be a Member of anything, be it Weight Watchers or the Dollar Makers Women’s Club, will not solve all you problems overnight or make you instantly successful.

We all need to take daily steps towards our goals. Knowing what your goals are is only the first step. The most important part on your road to success is taking action. Break it down into manageable steps.

Most of us have been on a diet at one time or another. It’s overwhelming when you think you have to lose 20 lbs. But if you say you want to lose a pound a week, it’s much less daunting. How many of us, by procrastinating and saying, “I’ll start my diet on Monday,” have come to the realization that we need to take action now, or the 20 pounds will become 40?

At a recent Weight Watchers meeting, I was very amused to watch the ladies weigh in. I have seen ladies come in and take off their coats, shoes and even rings. But at this particular meeting one lady arrived and started stripping! She had a pair of jeans on and then took them off to reveal that she was wearing tight running shorts underneath. Another lady was walking around in a very short mini and believe me she did not have the figure to pull it off. My questions is what will they do at the next meeting to “fool” the scale?

This year the mission of the DollarMakers Women's Club is very different from last year.

Last year the focus was building the DollarMakers Women's Club community. We travelled far and wide meeting wonderful new people and many of them joined the DollarMakers Women's club.

This year my focus is on building success. We all have different goals and aspirations and my mission is to help you reach those goals.

In order to do that, we need to get serious about our business. It's no good having lofty goals. Serious action is required if we want to become successful.

Imagine a kite. For a kite to fly it needs to be launched. Then as the wind tugs and pulls, a serious hold is necessary for the kite to fly. Should you let go of the kite, it would fly away spin and tumble and fall to the ground.

The goal of the DollarMakers Women's club is to help you hold onto the kite and watch it soar. I believe without a supportive community it's lonely out there.

Do you have staying power to keep the kite soaring? People give up so easily. In this world of instant gratification people move from group to group, ever seeking illusive success. Because they move on, they never really establish roots, and hope that the next group or the next fad of the month will give them the success they crave.

I have been watching my little 9 month old granddaughter in England mastering first sitting, then crawling, and now standing via Skype. She does not give up. Every day she practises over and over again to achieve the next milestone. Before she could crawl, she would roll herself to wherever she wanted to go. The latest step in her development is that after much practising, she is now able to stand on her own!

When people get into Joint Ventures, they often feel overwhelmed, and they don't know where to start.. It is so easy and such a natural thing for especially women to do. We need to apply the KISS principle: Keep it simple, stupid!

To help you to develop a Joint Venture mindset, I have some very practical examples that I'm sure will inspire you. One word of caution. Have a written agreement stipulating exactly what the agreement is so there can be no misunderstandings. Do your due diligence. If things don't work out you will only have yourself to blame. The examples I am giving are only to help you understand how Joint Ventures work and I am not recommending you do any of them without having an agreement in place. You have a spare bedroom or basement and someone is looking for somewhere to stay.

You have a big garden and a gardener in an apartment building is looking for gardening space.

You have a basement that needs repair. Team up with a handyman looking for somewhere to stay. Instead of paying you rent, he works on the basement repairs. Stipulate exactly what your expectations are!

I have friend with a big basement and they wanted to turn it into a games room. They teamed up with friends and now have a billiards table in the basement for everyone to enjoy.

What if the church needs funds? If they have a parking lot that is not being used, they can let out parking spaces, especially if they are near a bus or train station.

Finding parking near an exhibition centre can be difficult especially if it's a popular event. Here in Vancouver we have the very popular PNE every summer. The neighbours went into action and they rent spaces in their driveways.

Do a resource audit. What do you have that someone else might need? Start with baby steps, and soon you will be ready to move onto bigger things.

Lessons learnt in Africa

When we lived in Africa, we always admired the way poor black women bartered and traded. They would arrive at a house and trade vases, salad bowls, shawls, brooms, and a number of other items they had made or traded for other items, like food or used clothes or cutlery that the housewife had no more use for. It was like a mobile garage sale of barter – little money changed hands, and everyone was happy with the results. We would look forward to their visits. Women love trading and communicating, and these travelling black trader women would be welcomed with a cup of tea and a sandwich and trading would commence. One women travelled every year from the neighbouring country Zimbabwe with beautiful crochet tablecloths. I used to look forward to her visit. The money she made in South Africa from the sale of her tablecloths would enable her to feed her family for the next year.

Women are natural traders and communicators, so Joint Ventures is really nothing new for us, except that we should always expect to receive reciprocation. Because we are kind and helpful, we should not slip into the murky waters of false guilt, mysticism, and altruism, and in this way we can avoid being taken advantage of. When you trade with someone, instead of throwing money at them, they retain their self-respect and identity. Reciprocation doesn't have to be financial, but there must be value for value.

Tri-City entrepreneur makes student fundraising easy

Young Coquitlam entrepreneur Stephanie Prentice has done the impossible:
Make it worthwhile financially for large businesses to support charities.

Her secret? Selling her website's customer volume to retail chains and
restaurants in exchange for discounted rates on their gift cards --
which she buys in bulk.

Prentice then sells the gift cards at their regular cost through her
Student and Charity Gift Cards website. The profit she gleans from her
discounted rate she gives to a variety of charities and non-profits --
after paying a percentage to PayPal and keeping a small percentage for
her business.

The idea came to her after she became fed up with the typical
fundraising model used by her son's school and hockey team which
involved trying to guilt people into buying things they didn't
necessarily want.

"I hated going to work every day and being that girl who had something
else to sell to everybody and putting pressure on my colleagues,"
Prentice said. "But as a parent, of course you support your children."

It's an all-too-common conundrum, especially in office environments and
especially around the holidays.

And so, thinking there must be a better way -- and must be something in
it for the person who finds it -- Prentice took a leave of absence from
her job in June and set her sights on retail gift cards.

By September, she had incorporated her business and website, Student and
Charity Gift Cards (www.studentgcs.com), and in October she opened the
site to the public.

Each charity and student fundraising group Prentice is involved with has
its own account on her website where customers wishing to donate to that
charity simply click on their logo as the beneficiary of their gift card
purchase. Then Prentice mails out the gift cards to her customers and,
on the first of each month, she tallies up the totals for each charity
and mails them cheques for the profits donated that month.

And so far, her plan is working.

Since the website's launch on Oct. 1, Student and Charity Gift Cards has
sold well over $100,000 in gift cards from more than 50 national
retailers, with 7% being the average amount of the gift card's value
going directly to the non-profit.

"The whole thing has just been snowballing bigger and bigger," she said. Like rolling a snowball, the toughest part was just building the initial
momentum.

After unsuccessfully hounding restaurants and retailers trying to get
through to the right people and, once there, trying to convince them to
take a chance on her then client-less business, Prentice eventually
found a sympathetic ear in the head of Footlocker, a major sportswear
retailer.

"I had phoned and the guy I got was actually the president of the
company because everyone else was out. I talked to him and he was awesome and set me up directly."

Once Footlocker decided to take a chance on her, companies like
Winners, Old Navy, Safeway, Chapters and American Eagle Outfitters have
hopped on the bandwagon.

What's more, Prentice's business model includes a provision that the
more gift cards her company sells for a retailer, the bigger the
discount she gets on the cards. And that means a bigger cut of the gift
card value goes to whatever non-profits her customers choose, meaning;
what's good for business is good for society

We did an interesting exercise at the November Dollarmaker's Women's club meeting. I asked for feedback from the group.One of the techniques for a Joint Venture Broker is to listen more and talk less. It is not always easy when there is a group and only 1 of me, so I asked 3 questions and was really surprised by some of the answers.

What surprised me most were the very unusual and unique things people had done and I had no idea.
It gave me a real insight into what makes them tick and in many cases it revealed their hot button.

One Member shared that she was feeling lonely and helpless, because she could not find someone to share her ideas. I would never have guessed, because she is always so enthusiastic and friendly!

This brings me to my New Year's Resolution:

To ask more questions. To listen more and talk less! It's when we're listening that were at our best.

Rent a Christmas Tree

I recently spotted an article about renting a Christmas tree, instead of having an artificial tree or having a tree that can be a fire hazard. Not only is renting a tree a viable option, but it is also environmentally friendly. I think it's a great way to teach our children in this throw away society not to be wasteful. These companies will not only deliver and fetch your tree afterwards, but they will store it for you for the next year. Other companies will plant the trees in a watershed after pick up. One company evev sends elves to deliver the tree. How delightful!

The question springs to mind as a Joint Venture Broker: what other service do renters of Christmas trees need? Think about it!

Thank you to the ladies that joined me on the last conference call for the year.
The DollarMakers Christmas Party was a roaring success, with Christine Till and Auret Esselen singing and entertaining and Joyce and her team did an excellent job as always.

Robin surprised every one when he put on a Santa suit and presented chocolate roses to our singing roses. He did the Santa Boogie much to the enjoyment of everyone present. As the songs keep reminding us, “It's the season to be Merry and Gay. “

If you are a Joint Venture Broker, this is a great time of the year for you. You will be out and about meeting and greeting more people than any other time of the year.
Now is the time to build on the relationships you have and to make new connections. Listen carefully to what people do and have, and what they're looking for. File this in a safe place to build on in the New Year. It's like Santa's dropping all these opportunities in your lap!
Everyone you meet has a need, a goal, or a problem. A smart Joint Venture Broker, always answer, “YES! I know someone who can help you with that! I’ll get right back to you on that.”
Dr Nancy D. O'Reilly says, "As you know, if you're looking for anything, a place, a service or some good advice, who do you ask? A woman, of course! Women are the greatest Yellow Pages resource ever. If you like what she is wearing, or reading, or the cut and colour of her hair, a woman is happy to tell you all about it. Is this a maternal, hormonal trait, or just social training? A True Story by Price Pritchett

One of our members suggested that a good book to read is a book by Author Price Pritchert.

In the introcuction he shares the following story. He says:I’m sitting in a quiet room at the Millcroft Inn, a peaceful
little place hidden back among the pine trees about an
hour out of Toronto. It’s just past noon, late July, and I’m
listening to the desperate sounds of a life-or-death struggle
going on a few feet away.
There’s a small fly burning out the last of its short life’s
energies in a futile attempt to fly through the glass of the
windowpane.The whining wings tell the poignant story of the
fly’s strategy—try harder.
But it’s not working.
The frenzied effort offers no hope for survival. Ironically, the
struggle is part of the trap. It is impossible for the fly to try
hard enough to succeed at breaking through the glass.
Nevertheless, this little insect has staked its life on reaching its
goal through raw effort and determination.
This fly is doomed. It will die there on the windowsill.
Across the room, ten steps away, the door is open.Ten
seconds of flying time and this small creature could reach the
outside world it seeks.With only a fraction of the effort now
being wasted, it could be free of this self-imposed trap.The
breakthrough possibility is there. It would be so easy.
Why doesn’t the fly try another approach, something
dramatically different? How did it get so locked in on the idea
that this particular route, and determined effort, offer the most
promise for success? What logic is there in continuing, until
death, to seek a breakthrough with “more of the same”?
No doubt this approach makes sense to the fly. Regrettably,
it’s an idea that will kill.
“Trying harder” isn’t necessarily the solution to achieving
more. It may not offer any real promise for getting what you want out
of life. Sometimes, in fact, it’s a big part of the problem.
If you stake your hopes for a breakthrough on trying harder
than ever, you may kill your chances for success.

From the Kitchen to the Boardroom.

It is a well-know fact that the number of businesses owned by women is on the rise. Another interesting fact is that many women prefer service-based businesses.
Although businesses owned by women have been on the increase for more than ten years, in a majority of the cases the income the ladies earned from their businesses falls far short of what the men are earning. It is a sad fact that some of the women-owned businesses are not producing nearly the revenue of their male counterparts.
Women who make the choice to stay at home to raise their families are well aware of the financial cost. To her, the benefits of staying at home and raising her family far outweighs the loss of income.
An interesting observation is that 75% of women entrepreneurs were Stay- At-Home-Mom's running a business in their spare time while raising a family. Once the kids grow up many of these women will move on to something else.
We've seen the rise of women entrepreneurs over the past decade. Think of Martha Stewart. She built a business starting from the kitchen in her own home.
While writing this article I picked up my local newspaper. I was very impressed with Tara McIntosh and her colum in the Tri City News.
She stated, “According to Legalzoom.com, Stay-At-Home-Moms come up with some pretty savvy business ideas while they fold laundry, and they crank out at least 424 new enterprises every day: the Baby Einstein Videos, the One Minute Manicure, Mother's Work Inc. (a maternity wear empire), Jean Pare's Company's Coming Cookbooks, Mrs. Fields Cookies, or a couple of book series you may have heard of ; 'Twilight' and 'Harry Potter.'”
“When the kids were older,” Tara McIntosh continues, “these same women went on to become realtors, speakers, authors, business owners, and teachers.”
No matter where you are or what you do, Joint Ventures are a natural fit for women, from the boardroom, classroom or kitchen.

As we head towards the end of the year, we should look at the goals we set and many of us published on our profiles. It's time to take stock and see where we stand.

Are you on track to reach your goals?

Do you feel stuck?

Are business systems you used in the past not working?

It's time to re-evaluate and get excited.

But the question is, how to go about it?

Action steps to help us move forward.

Take time to look at the goals you have set.

Reevaluate the goals you have set. Are you on track?

Are you stuck and not sure what to do next?

Lets create a business bucket list.

1. After this call, find a quiet place where you won't be disturbed. Get a notebook and pen and sit quietly, gathering your thoughts. Relax,
2. Start writing down your thoughts. Don't filter the ideas that will come to you. Write down everything that comes to you.

If you are not sure how to get the process going, ask yourself pertinent questions and let the ideas flow.

What am I passionate about?
What am I good at?
Who would I like to work with?
What can I do different?

Give yourself a time limit, and then put the list away. Wait a day or two before you look at the list to see if there are any good ideas that you did not think about before.

Dave McGinn writes in the Globe and Mail: “Who's the boss? If we're talking about small and medium-sized companies, those with 500 employees or less, chances are it's a woman.

Female entrepreneurs are driving some of Canada's most successful small ventures, according to Profit magazine in its recently released annual ranking of the top 100 women entrepreneurs.

They're now also far outpacing their male counterparts.

From 1976 to 2008, the number of self-employed men in Canada roughly doubled, from 873,400 to 1,719,700, according to Statistics Canada. The number of self-employed women nearly tripled over the same period, going from 311,600 to 909,900.

I want my own rules and my own life and I'm not quite ready to retire.'”

I hope you all had time to spend Thanksgiving with friends and family. We all have so much to be thankful for.

Robin and I received the following email from one of our members Lucille and I would love to share it with you:

It's my custom on Thanksgiving to give thanks to those people who have contributed to my life. So, I am writing to thank you for your commitment in helping people like myself achieve financial freedom. Although I don't know you well, what I have perceived is your tireless dedication, high integrity and generosity in supporting and teaching the members of DollarMakers. Even though I have not been as involved in DollarMakers as I had originally intended, I have still been able to make significant profits, just by partnering with Glenn Whitter. I have tried many different ways to create wealth, and your model of joint venturing is the best I've found. I also think it is the model that will best serve us all in this changing economic climate.

Decide and Commit in any Joint Venture

It’s amazing what happens when you fully commit to something. Whatever that action is that shows there’s no turning back: booking the flight, resigning from a job, paying a bill, writing that letter, making a call or agreeing on a date.

W.H. Murray, the explorer, wrote: “Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s flavor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings, and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way.”

The word "DECIDE", is from the Latin "Decidere", which means "To kill off any other alternatives".

Sitting on the fence wastes time and money, decreases confidence, diminishes one’s reputation with those Eagles who are action and result oriented and increases the chance that one will do nothing but find excuses. The window of opportunity is prone to slamming shut on the fingers of the vacillating weakling. The indecisive, wavering, faltering entrepreneur watches as others boldly overcome their fears and walk away with the prize every time. No matter how much we justify our fears, the bottom line is clear: you have to leave the shore in order to reach Treasure Island.
Winners know that they can’t wait until circumstances are perfect before making a commitment. They don’t wait until all the traffic lights along their route are green before leaving home. The best time is right now. They know that some decision, any decision, is better than no decision at all. Their enthusiasm and passion to reach their goals is greater than their trepidation. They focus on finding solutions and they believe in themselves and the value of their objectives. They make strong, firm and fast decisions. They don’t call fourteen meetings before deciding what to have for breakfast. And when they commit, as Mr. Murray tells us, things miraculously start to work out.

You can tell a lot about a person by the length of time it takes them to make a decision and a commitment. How about you? What decisions are your pondering? What are you waiting for? Are you paralysed with fear? It takes guts to leave the ruts, but once you commit, it just gets easier.
