Curly hair comes in various shapes, sizes, textures and types. Curly hair exists across numerous work fields, so we are making it our mission at Rumbie & Co, to show you the vast diversity of curly hair across job occupations.

Let us introduce you to Oliver, a regular at Rumbie & Co. Oliver is an experienced marriage and funeral celebrant with years of training and experience, allowing him to deal with any and all situations. His warmth, humour and intuition will provide you with the comfort and relief you need. With particular attention to detail, Oliver prides himself on creating ceremonies that are truly engaging.

Hi Oliver!

How did you get into marrying and burying people?

I became a marriage celebrant in 2014 mainly because I was sick of going to boring ceremonies that I didn’t feel really connected with. The couples I tend to attract as clients seem to be ones who are looking for a unique ceremony that captures them and helps represent what they have as a couple.

I have also been working in the funeral space as a celebrant and a planner. The funeral space is one I am very passionate about. The industry in Australia is changing and companies are now needing to be more transparent with their pricing and influences they have over grieving families. Planning a funeral can be very stressful for families who are in a vulnerable and often very emotional state. The most rewarding part of this role is being able to create something that truly represents the person who has passed

What’s one things most people don’t know about being a celebrant?

Registration time is long. We have to do additional study to remain registered each year.

Being a celebrant is traditionally not always a young person’s career choice, would you encourage young recruits to the industry?

I would encourage anyone, regardless of age to pursue a career as a celebrant. It’s extremely rewarding and requires a vast array of skills and strengths.

Could you share what is and has it been like being a curly guy?

Everyone thinks that curls are easy to maintain and in some ways they are. But for me, I always wanted to have those great haircuts I used to see guys getting. Flat tops, or even just cool styles with straight har. I used to hate going to get my haircut because no-one I saw when I was a kid knew how to cut curls so it was always a very disappointing experience. I used to get all kinds of insults because of my hair. Noodle nut, Maggi noodle head, Curly Sue to list a few examples. ( we are so sorry you had this experience)

How do you suggest we bridge these gaps (if any) for curly guys like you?

Help educate parents to teach kids how to manage curls.

If you could give any advice to your young self, what would that be?

Stop brushing your hair. Get a good products and let the hair go free.

And lastly, what is your curly hair routine?

Wake up, have a laugh at what sleep might have done to my hair overnight. Twice a week, I cleanse and style my hair while wet, shake the hair around and then see what happens. (curly guy magic)

A Star Is Born. Find out how this Zimbabwean/Australian actress is enjoying the versatility of her afro hair and lighting up a trail in the acting business.

If you didn’t know about Charmaine Bingwa, you are welcome ;). Seriously, she’s one to watch out for. this star,

was awarded the prestigious 2018 Heath Ledger Scholarship, judged by Oscar-winner Matt Damon, Naomi Watts, Elizabeth Debicki, Rose Byrne, Carmen Cuba, Jeremy Podeswa, Gregor Jordan and Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Most recently she starred alongside Monica Bellucci in Nekrotronic that premiered at Toronto International Film Festival.

Charmaine also received the 2018 Equity Atlantic Award by the Australian.

She starred, wrote, produced & directed an award-winning series Little Sista (Best Screenplay at the LGBT Toronto Film Festival) which now streams on international streaming channel Revry.

The star received critical reception not only for her award-winning series Little Sista, but for her German-Australian LGBT short film Stille Nacht, which premiered at Academy© Qualifying and BAFTA Recognized film festival Flickerfest.

This girl is on fire and in all her busyness, she’s taken time out to share on her journey to stardom and maintaining her afro hair.

As an Aussie, why was it important for you to move to LA?
Australia is a great country, but for the type of roles and projects I want, there was really no option but to be over in the US. Because it’s a larger size industry, it means there is more of everything on offer. In the past few years in Australian television has started to become more diverse, with shows like The Family Law and Cleverman – so I hold out hope that the breadth of storytelling will continue to increase.

What do you want Charmaine Bingwa to be known for?
Masterful work, huge range, brilliance both behind and in front of the camera, having a big heart and generosity of spirit.

Any advice for upcoming Australian actors who look up to you?
Just really to remind yourself that anything is possible for you too. Work hard and stay the course.

What Aussie paraphernalia do you miss?
I miss the food, so much! Especially Messina ice cream, nothing beats it.

I miss our hair appointments, your tenacity is to be envied. Do you remember our chats? Anything stand out to you? (pressure but no pressure haha)
I remember always coming in with a script in hand and talking to you in a US accent, but I remember particularly coming to see you after you very kindly came and watched Doubt: A Parable, a play I was in not once but twice. You commented that my work paralleled Viola Davis. It’s no wonder I’m having success with people like you in my corner. I always remember you being very encouraging, so thank you.

I’ve watched you enjoy the versatility of your afro hairstyles. From blonde hair, balayage, longer hair, the LOB, the BOB, weave extensions, lace weaves and lace wigs, dark hair, curly hair, your natural afro hair, the red hair, and now, (absolutely love the short pixie crop btw). how do you manage that?
As an actor, it truly is a gift to me to be able to convincingly manipulate my image. Ultimately you want to be able to disappear into roles. So I’m grateful for the visual versatility.

What do you do to maintain the pixie look?
Outside of the regular hairdressing appointment, in my experience, the shorter the hair, the smaller the maintenance! So I’m truly loving how it doesn’t take too much care at all. I need minimal product, it’s just set and go.

Catch up with @charmainebingwa on Instagram and Twitter.

Keep up to date with Rumbie & Co Spotlight and the latest on everything curly hair by subscribing to our newsletter.

For those who don’t know, Australia has had it’s very first and very own curl-specialising brick and mortar hair salon in Sydney, since 2015. Wait a minute…

“What’s a curl specialist?” you ask. In regards to our team, we define ourselves as professional hairdressers that are certified, dedicated, passionate and have specialist knowledge about all types of curly hair. Wavy, curly and afro hair textures. So,

Why would you need a curly hairdresser? To answer that, as a curly girl or curly guy empath, we need to go through some common curly woes:

You feel and have heard negative things that your hair is unmanageable, unprofessional, difficult, can and is only styled in a bun or braids.

Your curly hair routine takes too much time and requires too much of you, you feel overwhelmed, you’ve become a product junkie and are progressively discouraged. To make matters worse, still, your hair doesn’t look like your favourite curly YouTuber’s.

Your curls were being cut wet or straightened. They may look good until you are home, and the curl has come back, fringe is too short, hair is uneven, too much was cut off, nothing was explained, it’s triangular or too structured.

You are tired of hair salon disappointments so you never visit a hairdresser. Last cut…years ago.

Your child has a totally different hair texture to yours or your parents had different hair texture to yours and you never knew what to do with your hair. Maybe you have never had the desire to embrace every curl because your curly hair has been a touchy subject. This normally happens when there’s a “throwback gene” or if the curly hair in question is a byproduct of biracial/ mixed race backgrounds.

Whatever the situation is, This is where the Rumbie & Co curl experts come in.

What is so different about our curly hair salon?

Other than the aforementioned, our extensive training and other characteristics, Rumbie & Co’s team of curl experts are as follows:

Not purist. We believe there’s more freedom in curls than is often portrayed and we love empowering people with that knowledge and giving them curl confidence.

We believe in self-love and respecting each individual on their curly girl (guy) journey. Curly hair is so versatile and we’ll help you achieve your best and healthiest curls (even if those curl patterns have been altered). We will help you with making informed decisions around your curly crowns.

Our curl team offers extensive services including a healthy selection of afro specialty services, curly hair extensions, weaves, lace front weaves, wig installations and various protective styling not only limited to cornrows and braids.

Our excitement to teach and guide you on curly hair techniques, curly hairstyles, maintenance, colouring and keeping healthy curls is unparalleled

We partner with some amazing curly hair product brands that just focus on the essential–curl hydration. The likes of Australia’s own Embrace For Every Curl, Jane Carter Solutions and TGIN as they deliver consistent perfection on curl results. This empowers the life for our curlies by simplifying your personal recommendations.

We are in this because we love curls. Let us help you embrace yours.
