Top 3 Bradley Moments:
1. June 24, 2007 - USA 2, Mexico 1 - CONCACAF Gold Cup Final - Introducing Benny Feilhaber....enough said

2. June 24 (odd), 2009 - USA 2, Spain 0 - Confed Cup Semi in which the US ended Spain's unbeaten run. Bradley showed superior defensive tactical shape and brillliant counterattacking. Also, I'd like to welcome you to the Jay DeMerit show

3. June 8, 2008 - USA 0, Argentina 0 - While this was typical "weather the storm" American style soccer, the US continually frustrated Messi and Co. in a time when they were ranked No. 1. Also, after being dominated in the first half, Bob's halftime talk inspired the team to a comanding second half revival, especially in oft-absent midfield.

I call this news bittersweet because Bradley's tenure was such an emotional rollercoaster and with that comes a certain degree of attachment. However, the program seemed to be a stagnant place and Bradley seemed to have lost the locker room so it was a good time for a clean break. Above all his tactical errors, the biggest thing that displeased me about Bradley came last year when the USMNT played friendlies against Poland and Colombia. For the friendlies, Bob called up Alejandro Bedoya (who is of Colombian descent) and Eric Lichaj (he is of Polish descent). However, he put in neither player against their respective patronage and that, to me, shows a lack of player management. With that said, I wish Bob all the luck in the world in the future, I hear the Fire are looking for a new coach....

The problem that scares me now is hiring a new coach. If the federation goes foreign, don't expect improvement in the near future because it takes time for foreign coaches to thrive in American soccer. At the same token, hiring a MLS coaching stalwart might just be a new Bob Bradley, imploring sophomoric bunkering tactics with absolutely not offensive or possession guile. Personally, stay away from any LATIN AMERICAN coach!!!! The critics are screaming for Jurgen, but he just started his post at TFC so I'm not sure if he can be coaxed out.

Things probably didn't go as Jozy planned in his match today where Villareal went down in flames against Sevilla in the Copa Del Rey 3-0. However he did earn a rare start and the opportunity to try and impress. Villarreal's inability to defend any corner kicks led to three header goals and Villarreal's elimination from the Copa Del Rey. Altidore looked somewhat lost and without inspiration and he wasn't the only one. He did manage to be fairly tidy with the ball and connected most of his passes but he was often found standing in a crowd of Villarreal players or making the same runs as fellow american Rossi. He simply didn't see much of the ball at all. This can certainly be chalked up to the fact that he simply hasn't been playing. It is difficult to just jump in and be a star but his performance didn't look to inspire Juan Carlos Garrido as Jozy was substituted in the 62nd minute for Ruben. While he didn't stand out as a poor player in any means he simply wasn't very effective for the Yellow Submarines. Here's to hoping that he earns a few more starts and gets a chance to polish his skills. Jozy's grade= B-

Fail Friday! 1/7/11

Here's another Fail Friday for all you fans of Rip City Soccer.

Tuesday, March 15
Seattle Sounders FC vs. Los Angeles Galaxy - Qwest Field, Seattle, WA - 9:30 ET on ESPN
This is Seattle's third consecutive home First Kick, but this one might not be so lopsided. Last year, the Galacticos embarrassed the home crowd with a 4-0 rout in front of the Sounders faithful. The Galaxy may be without Becks, but they will still look to flex their new muscle in the form of Frankie Hejduk and JP Angel (and maybe Ronaldinho??)

Saturday, March 19
Vancouver Whitecaps FC vs. Toronto FC - Empire Field, Vancouver, Canada

Begin one hell of a passionate rivalry. This may not have the hype of Montreal-Toronto or Vancouver-Montreal, but this is east vs. west coast: Canada style. Vancouver would like to assert their history while Toronto FC would like to assert their MLS dominance.

D.C. United vs. Columbus Crew - RFK Stadium, Washington, DC
The two most tumultuous sides in the East will face each other. The sides, hopefully for DC's sake, are heading in different directions. Under Ben Olsen, the Screaming Eagles have nowhere to go but up with acquisitions such as Josh Wolff, Joseph Ngwenya, and Dax McCarty. Columbus are having a big offseason, shipping off two club legends (Hejduk and Schelotto) and welcoming back another (Jeff Cunningham).

Red Bull New York vs. Seattle Sounders FC - Red Bull Arena, Harrison, NJ

The red bulls look to avenge the opener from 2 years ago against the Sounders. The Sounders will have a short turnaround from Tuesday and they will face a well-rested Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez.

FC Dallas vs. Chicago Fire SC - Pizza Hut Park, Frisco, TX
The MLS cup finalists will take on a mysterious Chicago side. Even without Jeff Cunningham and Dax McCarty, I feel the hoops will be able to handle De Los Cobos's side (sorry, Doddsy). UNLESS, the Fire can draft a game changer or go out and buy a quality striker. As of now, the Fire have a number of holes to fill (especially if Ljungberg leaves).

Houston Dynamo vs. Philadelphia Union - Robertson Stadium, Houston, TX
The Dynamo will sport the flashy jerseys in their first home game. This game could go either way. Philadelphia still look a bit immature, and Houston are rebuilding. Should be a good game.

Colorado Rapids vs. Portland Timbers - Commerce City, CO

Denver will get the first taste of Rose City red, while the longstanding Timbers will get the first taste of MLS....starting with the current champions. With Portland's roster still forming, and the Rapids only deepening a good squad (Nyassi, Marshall), this one easily looks like a home win.

CD Chivas USA vs. Sporting Kansas City - Home Depot Center, Carson, CA
The new-look (wizards) will travel to California to face the goats. Who knows what happens next? Chivas barely has a front office but are still rebuilding with the likes of Tristan Bowen and Jimmy Conrad. Conrad will have to face his former team so start pulling the heartstrings. This will also be the first look at Mexican DP Omar Bravo facing his former owner...er....franchise....er...Chivas

San Jose Earthquakes vs. Real Salt Lake - Buck Shaw Stadium, Santa Clara, CA

Arturo Alvarez faces his old team in this one. Project Geovanni didn't seem to work out so Frank Yallop will have to find some other ammo to use against probably MLS team of teams. RSL will probably be in an elite class of teams with the Galaxy, Rapids, RBNY, and Dallas.

Sunday, March 20
Los Angeles Galaxy vs. New England Revolution - Home Depot Center, Carson, CA
The Revs open up their season away to the galaxy, and they may can take advantage of a tired Galaxy squad. However, on the width and surface of the HDC, smash and bang soccer will not work for the Revs.

FIFA Club World Cup in Review

The annual FIFA Club World Cup wrapped up in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Pre-Tournament favorites Inter Milan won the final with ease (3-0 romp of TP Mazembe), however, I think the tournament was about much more than who won it. Here are some stats, results, and interesting stories that developed throughout the tournament.

Top Stories:
-Inter Milan represents the 4th consecutive UEFA team to win the tourney and the 2nd won from Milan after AC did it in 2007. Samuel Eto'o lead the team, winning the MVP and scoring in the final. This victory may have save Rafa Benitez's job, although sources speculate that he's axed regardless. This also was an coming of age, of sorts, from Guadeloupean-French winger, 22yr old Jonathan Biabiany, who iced the cake in the final.

Check out the hair!

-The biggest story of the tournament was TP Mazembe's disruption of a South American-European final. They become the first team outside of the two big federations to reach the final of the tournament. When I was watching the game against Pachuca, the team just looked like a stereotypical African team--big, physical, and lightning quick, with technical and tactical lacking. However, the team looked transformed in the semifinal, going up 2-0 against a very crafty Internacional. The final was more of a celebration of accomplishment than an actual competition as Inter quickly affirmed their superiority. Dioko Kaluyituka was a highlight for the team, scoring a goal and winning the silver ball, and may be looking for a transfer to a better league. More noted than they play on the field, was Mazembe's interesting array of hair styles. Hopefully this encourages supposed sub-Saharan powerhouse leagues to put more into their own champions league so they may get this exposure (this means you, South Africa). Well done Crows!!!

-SC Internacional may have won a medal, but they should be disappointed. The Porto Alegre side became the first South American team no to reach the final. The team looked cocky in the game against Mazembe and they paid for it. This is the team that upset Barcelona to win the whole thing in 2006. The one highlight for them in the tournament was rumored Houston Dynamo target and journeyman Andres D'Alessandro winning the Bronze ball.

-Seognam's Colombian striker Mauricio Molina lit up the tourney, scoring three goals and winning the golden boot. Seognam had a productive tourney, even though they finished 4th. Seognam's foreigners stole the show, with Montenegrins, Australians, and Colombians driving the team.

-Papua New Guinea? yes that's right. Papua New Guinea was represented in a FIFA tournament for the first time ever in the form of Hekari United. Even though they lost in the play-in game against a weak Al Wahda team, they were fun to watch. I wish they could've played in a consolation game because they attack was direct and crafty at times, with Henry Fa'arodo providing the spice. This is encouragement for alll the minnows out there, and this is what makes the tournament more than a formality. This means that teams from countries other than the likes of Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, New Zealand, Korea, and Japan can participate in the tourney. What I really liked about this team was the manageress. That's right, manageress. It was the club president's wife who helps coaches the team, makes the team dinner, and puts out the kits for the team. I even thought I saw her pull out orange slices at half time.

-Abu Dhabi's indifference. FIFA got the impression that the Emirati city wasn't as thrilled to host the tourney as they should be, and they responded. The 2011 and 2012 editions will be moved back to Japan. For some of the games, attendence was weak. Low: 10,908 in the 5th-Place game.

-Concluding Thought: Re-seeding should occur!!! I think Africa has earned the right for a first bye along with UEFA. Will it happen? probably not.

1 Tottenham Hotspur FC (ENG) vs. AC Milan (ITA)
This might be one of the most interesting matchups. New kids on the block Tottenham are absolutely on fire under the leadership of Harry Redknapp, Rafael van der Vaart, and Gareth Bale. However, so is a revamped AC Milan, current Serie A leaders and 7-time Champions League winners. They boast the likes of Robinho and Ibrahimovic. Tottenham: Group A Winners. AC Milan: Group G runner-up. First Leg: February 15. Rip City Prediction: Tottenham wins with a shocker at White Hart Lane

2 FC Schallke 04 (GER) vs. Valencia CF (ESP)
Two of the weaker teams in the knockout round look to take advantage of the formidable draw. Schalke are Group B winners and Valencia is Group C runner-up. Schalke is led by their very own Spainard veteran Raul, paired with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar up top. Valencia is not the club it has been in years past due to debt, but no one told its players that. The pretty meager team has been performing admirably as a collective group. The first leg is on February 15. Rip City Prediction: Valencia wins the home leg by enough to overcome a second leg loss.

3 Manchester United FC (ENG) vs. Olympique Marseille (FRA)
3-time champions and Group C winners Man U have to like their chances against the only French team to win the Champions League. Fergie and the boys know how to win big games and there is no way Marseille can compete with the Red Devils. Despite Rooney's problems, Dimitar Berbatov and Nani have been in breakout form. On the other side, Marseille advance as Group F runner-up and sit 5th in Ligue 1. They will need a big result at the Velodrome if there is any hope. First leg: February 23. Rip City Prediction: Man U advance with ease with a goal from Three-Lung Park.

4 FC Barcelona (ESP) vs. Arsenal FC (ENG)
First matchup of the titans! Who plays prettier football? Where does Fabregas's true heart? Let the build-up begin as Group D winners Barca take on Group H runner-up Arsenal. Arsenal will need a big, big result at the Emirates if there is any hope, because their is no way they do not give up less than 2 or 3 goals at Camp Nou. If anything, they will need a big performance from their defense with the goalkeeping situation in disarray. First leg: February 16. Rip City Prediction: Barca just need to be Barca and they should comfortably advance.

16 teams on the Road to Wembley

5 FC Bayern Munich (GER) vs. FC Internazionale Milano (ITA)
This may be the most anticipated tie of the round. It's a rematch of last year's final. However, this time around both teams have been struggling as of late. FC Bayern won Group E and Inter was runner-up in Group A. By the time this leg plays out on Feb 23, both sides could look significantly different. Especially on the managerial front. Key players like Samuel Eto'o, Diego Milito, and Maicon will be needed to get passed Mario Gomez, Philip Lahm, and co. Rip City Prediction: Redemption for Bayern, turmoil for Inter

6 Chelsea FC (ENG) vs. FC Copenhagen (DEN)
This story has pretty much been already written. The only formality is how high the aggregate gets. Chelsea advance by way of winning Group F, and Copenhagen advance as Group D runner-up. The first leg is Feb. 22. Rip City Soccer: Chelsea without breaking a sweat

7 Real Madrid CF (ESP) vs. Olympique Lyonnais (FRA)
Los Galacticos (Group G winners) face Lyon (Group B Runner-Up) is what should be an entertaining match. Jose Mourinho will try to bring his golden touch to the Bernebeu and lead Real Madrid to advance for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign, the year Mourinho's Porto won it. Lyon will look to repeat last year's results as the advanced past Madrid in the same round. Ronaldo, Higuain, and Benzema will look to battle against Michel Bastos, Lisandro Lopez, and company. The first leg is on Feb. 22. Rip city Soccer Prediction: Jose Mourinho will win again!
8 FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) vs. AS Roma (ITA)
Taking advantage of Arsenal's poor away form, the Ukraine side stole Group H. The UEFA Cup winners from 2009 look to test their chances in the Champions League second phase as they take on AS Roma (Group E runners-up). Shakhtar's plethora of Brazilians (Luiz Adriano, Fernandinho, Jadson) will be relied on if they look to advance past Totti's men. First leg is on Feb 16. Rip City Prediction: Shakhtar Donetsk advance!!!

Charlie Davies No Playing time Sunday....but Wednesday?

There was a lot of press about Charlie Davies making the squad for Sochaux in their game Sunday against Bordeaux. It turned out to be a bit of a let down because Charlie didn't get into the game but that wasn't too much of a surprise seeing as this was a huge game for both teams and with it being tied for most of the match it may have been too big of a risk for Sochaux to bring in a player that is probably way out of form. However, this is obviously a positive step forward for Davies and Sochaux have a quick turnaround on Wednesday against a near bottom of the table Monaco team. This looks like it could be the perfect opportunity for Davies to see some action. Especially because this is the last game before the transfer window opens and they may be inclined to throw Charlie a bone before he goes out looking for loan options. If he can get in a game and look capable his stock will be much improved. So if your a Davies fan and praying for him to rebound to his former glory then Wednesday could be a big day for you. Hope that he makes the lineup again and that Sochaux takes an early lead.

US soccer's poster boy Landon Donovan is once again a hot loan prospect for teams in Europe. However, this year Lando's world looks a little different than it has in the past. He is wrapping up an amazing year in which he finally succeeded in Europe, scored a last second winner in the World Cup, and helped the Galaxy win the Supporter's Shield in MLS. After the MLS season ended speculation on Donovan's future quickly arose. He responded only that he would be resting for a few months before he made a decision on whether or not he would like to go on loan. Recent developments seem to have made his decision more difficult. Hit the jump for more...
Not only does Everton seem interested but reports out of Newcastle and Fulham are that they would also like to sign Donovan to a loan deal. While Landon has already come out and said that he would only play for Everton in the EPL the options are still out there and they could change his mind with a handsome deal. There is always the possibility that he won't go anywhere as well. He has been playing soccer for almost two straight years now and could probably use the time off. So where should he go? He should probably return to Everton where he is loved. He would be comfortable there knowing most of the players from last season and would have a relatively strong supporting cast even though Everton is struggling a bit. He could be equally successful and solidify himself as a world class player. The bottom line is he should try and suck it up and keep playing this offseason. He will only be able to play at such a high level for a short period of time. He relies on his speed and at 28 years old that won't be with him forever. He shouldn't go to Newcastle unless they offer a ridiculous salary because, of the three, Newcastle is the least friendly destination for Landon, also Newcastle isn't having trouble scoring goals like the other two. He could possibly have trouble finding playing time depending on where they want to play him. In my opinion if he really wants to prove something and solidify himself as the greatest US player of all time then he should go to Fulham and rescue them. Fulham currently has Americans Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson so he should have a stable base at Craven Cottage if he decides to go there. Fulham desperately needs offensive inspiration while they recover from various injuries and he could give them exactly that. Can't you see Lando and Deuce hooking up for the Cottagers? Adding relegation escape artist to his list of accolades might be a nice addition to his career. Plus, doesn't it seem fitting for Fulham to have an American come in and preserve their top flight status? Both Mcbride and Dempsey have done it. Go join the club Landon. So what will he actually do? Its really hard to say. There seems to be as much of a possibility of him staying in the states as there is him going on loan. If I had to guess he will go on loan again. The allure of the EPL will prove to much and after a few months of recovery he will be yearning to be back at Goodison Park. He will join Everton and have a slightly less successful but still positive loan spell with the toffees. You heard it here first.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ripcitysoccer.blogspot.com/2010/12/landon-donovan-winter-destination.html' title='Landon Donovan Winter Destination: Fulham? Galaxy star striker Edson Buddle is trying out with English Premier League Club Birmingham FC. Right now Birmingham sits 2 points above the relegation zone and Birmingham Manager Alex McLeish admits that he is the market for a new striker. However, it is unclear whether Buddle is even available. Last year the Galaxy allowed Landon Donovan and David Beckham to go on loan over the MLS offseason, but Beckham's injury suffered on loan that kept him out for much of the 2010 season for the Galaxy may make Galaxy Manager Bruce Arena un-wiling to let Buddle go this year. Yet, after nabbing aging star Juan Pablo Angel this week the Galaxy may be willing to part with Buddle for the right price.

Talks have not yet begun between the clubs or with the player so all of this may come to nothing. Nonetheless, it is exciting that a promising american player is getting attention abroad. While Birmingham may not be the cream of the crop they still compete in one of the best leagues in the world and if the U.S. national team is to elevate their game they need more players playing in the top leagues of the world so that they will improve as individuals. I believe Buddle has out grown the MLS and that it is time for him to try to make it at the european level. Good luck to you son!

Rip City Crystal Ball: MLS in 2020. No. At least not in the time frame that my vision is limited to. The NASL just recently was accepted as the division 2 league and most of those teams are so financially insecure that folding is always an option. Also, owners in MLS are now forking out 40 million dollars just to join the league. Once they enter the league they will probably continue to lose money unless they can be one of the few that manages to turn a profit. It does look like more and more teams will begin to turn a profit as attendance rises and jersey sponsor deals are made but the fact is that owners aren't going to be willing to agree on something that could send them down to a league where they would be hemorrhaging even more money. Perhaps if soccer continues to grow at the pace it is now promotion/relegation could be possible, but division 2 teams are going to have to get their own stadiums, fanbases, and even tv contracts before that happens. Also, even though the number of new owners in MLS has grown significantly there still needs to be more owners with deep pockets in MLS, NASL, and USL-pro. I just don't see this happening before 2020, if ever. The American sports scene is dominated by parity. Fans want to know that if they have the right coaches and system intact that their team can win the championship any year, which is an idea that shouldn't be scorned at. While the P/R system is exciting and we at Rip City are heavily in favor of a P/R system it is nice to know that after a terrible season your favorite team can have a productive offseason and be ready to bounce back the next year.

I bang my head against the wall because the U.S. never holds possession for more than a couple passes, frequently resorts to aimless kickball and attacks with the precision and efficiency of a Dodo bird. I am convinced the reason for these occurances is that the U.S. does not have a creative, exciting, unpredictable, forward minded, attacking center midfielder who actually wants the ball at his feet.
 Enter Stuart Holden:

This year Holden has played the attacking center midfield (like a QB in soccer) role for Bolton Wanderers in the Barclays English Premier League. Bolton are currently the fourth highest scoring team in the league behind the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea and sit in six place over all. Moreover, the Premier league is arguably one of the most competitive in the world. Each premier league team fights tooth and nail every week to keep their opponents out of the goal. Indeed, the league is known for its hard nose tackling and impenetrable organized defenses. Holden has only 2 goals in 1 assist in 17 appearances. Not terribly impressive. Yet, Holden is young and there is still plenty of time for him to grow into a the center mid star that U.S. soccer desperately needs. Most people know Donovan, Dempsey and the goalie Howard, but if the U.S. is ever going to be a serious contender for the World Cup they need a center midfielder who wants the ball at his feet. Holden has shown hat he can be the answer to our midfield nightmare if only Coach Bob Bradley would give him a chance.

Best Players From Underachieving Teams

We constantly hear about the best players who play for Man United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal as well as teams who are punching above their weight. However the star performers of those fighting against the drop are rarely noticed. This gives the proper dues to those who produce great performances every week for the bottom 5 teams, Birmingham, Fulham, Wigan, Wolves, and West Ham United
Akron won the NCAA College Cup today over Louisville. Both teams were trying to win their first ever NCAA soccer championship and Akron was trying to win its first NCAA championship of any kind. Akron was able to survive a late flurry by Louisville to win 1-0. In non-soccer holy fu**ing sh*t news the Metrodome roof collapsed under the weight of the snow that the blizzard left on it over the weekend. Didier Drogba missed a penalty kick that would have given Chelsea the win today against Tottenham, instead the game ended in a 1-1 tie and Chelsea continue their less than stellar form. What do I get Mom? How can I buy the cheapest possible gift for Little Jimmy and not make it look obvious? The answer may surprise you......Soccer scarves. Soccer scarves have created a fashionable and cosmopolitan culture which exudes class and worldliness. If you see a guy walking around in a scarf, you automatically think douche. But if you look closer and see that this scarf is embroidered with Liverpool or Osasuna or Chicago Fire or Genoa, you think, "Hey, I like this guy." The soccer scarf is what separates the US soccer fanbase from the European fanbase. That degree of style or class or everyday exposure hasn't hit us yet. It's time to change that. We here at Rip City have started our own collection. We've got AC St. Louis (R.I.P.), US National Team, Espana, Inter Milan, Man U, New England Revolution, and more. I myself have started a collection where I try to get a scarf from the local club team of the places to which I travel. I've garnered a Chicago Fire one, a Charleston Battery one, a Tottenham scarf (even though I've never been there), an Eintracht Frankfurt scarf, and lastly a Kaizer Chiefs scarf from my journey to the World Cup. On a side note, if anyone knows how to get an AmaZulu or Golden Arrows (club teams from Durban, S. Africa) hit me up!!!!

So it's time we, as a true passionate American soccer fanbase, step up in class and rock the soccer scarf. They are a perfect Christmas gift. They can be worn for utility or accessory, and they look great draped on the wall over your TV! Good places to look for them are worldsoccershop.com, soccer.com, mlsgear.com, ruffneckscarves.com, or ebay.
