Did you know that your kitchen pantry holds all sorts of natural beauty products? These are what I call - My Kitchen Vanities. One of my favorites is HONEY.

Using honey as a facial cleanser and moisturizer sounds like 'sticky' business. In reality its easy to use, inexpensive, and and your face will love it.

Several months ago I quit using over-the-counter facial cleanser and moisturizers for one simple reason - the ingredients. I figure if I can't pronounce it, I'm not going to put it on my face.

Honey is one of my favorite sweeteners and now it's my favorite facial product. Any honey works, but I prefer to use raw honey as it hasn't been processed or pasteurized and still has
ALL it's naturally occurring enzymes, vitamins, and minerals just as the bees/nature made it.

A sure sign of good raw honey is that it will crystallize. Most of the honey sold in stores is processed and heated to look good to the consumer. This heating processing destroys some of honey's 'golden' properties.

Naturally occurring antimicrobal and antibiotic properties will cleans your face while boosting the immune system as the honey is absorbed into the skin. Being rich in antioxidants, it also helps repair and protect the skin from sunburn and harmful UV rays. Honey also helps in controlling acne.

I treat myself to a Honey Facial once a week and rinse it off while I'm showering. It can also be used as a cleanser/moisturizer on a daily basis.

How to use:

Wet face with warm water

Put approximately 1 Tablespoons honey in the palm of your hand. (Note: To soften crystallized honey, don't heat over high heat, instead put honey in a small container and set in a larger container of hot water till crystals dissolve.)

Dampen finger tips with water and dip into honey

Using circular motions rub all the honey on your face

Leave for 10-15 minutes

Use a warm, wet wash rag to remove honey. (I do this while I'm showering.) Don't be afraid of over scrubbing your face. I learned from my mother years ago that the face needs exercise just as the body does to retain it's tightness. Rubbing the face in brisk, circular motions help the facial skin and muscles retain their elasticity and stimulates blood circulation for a more youthful glow. I know this goes against everything taught in the 'beauty world'; I'm not suggesting ripping your face off - use wisdom, your own common sense and your face will thank you.

While my face is still wet, I briskly dry it with a clean hand towel. This gets rid of any leftover dead skin and stimulates better blood circulation.

Since my skin is on the dry side and I live in the desert, I like to finish off my facial by applying extra virgin olive oil to my face. This might freak out some of you. But skin loves olive oil. It can balance oily skin and also moisturize dry skin. But as with anything, try it and see how you like it. The moisturizing properties in the honey may be enough.

This all sounds great, but does it really work? YES! YES! YES! I am living proof. Since January I've been steadily loosing weight and being over 54 years old, I was concerned that my face would begin to look old and wrinkled and saggy - you know, like the balloon when it's full has no wrinkles, but deflate it and all you get a wrinkly, limp balloon. Just last week my husband was intently looking at my face. When I asked him what was wrong, he made the comment, "Your face is looking smoother and tighter." Wow! I'm for sure keeping this guy! He had no idea I was doing a 'study' in honey.

Several others have commented on my youthful skin and even someone on Facetime mentioned they wanted skin like mine! Now, I'm not bragging, just letting you know how lovely honey can make your skin.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

HEALTH UPDATE:
Here are a few awesome healing that I've noticed since my last update -

No more restless leg syndrome - no more pills to control it!!!

Getting more motion in my spine

I can actually bend one of my 'frozen' fingers

Still loosing weight at a healthy and sustainable rate

I've gotten 35% more range of motion in my legs - wahoo!

All because of diet change, it's so easy for anyone to do. Believe me, if I can do it, anyone can. If you're interested in learning more feel free to contact me. I love to share.

One of the first 'quick fixes' for poor nutrition and poor digestion is chewing your food. Chewing each bite 30-100 times is best. Wow! Who chews their food 100 times? I must confess that I don't. Usually 30-50 chews per-bite is enough for me. There are those who do chew 100 times though...something to think about!

We live in a society that demands everything to be fast. We even have Fast Food.
Fast food is just that - usually eaten fast (less nutritional absorption), and then in no time at all we're hungry again and feel like we've been fasting all day. Our society is literally overweight and nutritionally starving.

In order for the body to absorb the maximum nutrition it needs, we need to SLOW DOWN, and relax when we eat. Start out by taking a small bite, set your utensils down, breath deeply, relax, and chew, chew, chew. Savor the flavor and texture of each bite. Focus on how delicious it tastes.

Eating when we're stressed causes the blood to flow away from the stomach and digestion to slow down. Stress causes our body to release cortisol (stress hormone) which is a weight gaining drug made by the body to protect itself (fight or flight). Ever notice how yucky you feel after eating a meal when your highly stressed? You may not even want to eat when stressed, or you grab the fastest and least nutritious food for comfort.

Some of the benefits of eating while relaxed and CHEWING our food are -

Healthy digestion and assimilation

The body is able to burn calories easier because the food is already broken down before it gets to your stomach

Giving thanks - expressing gratitude to the Lord, the meal preparer, and the bread winner puts our mind and body in a state of relaxation and peace. It also prepares the stomach and mind for nutrition. The easiest way to release stress before a meal is by praying, expressing gratitude, taking a few deep breaths and then chewing slowly.

Enzymes in the mouth are released when chewing - ptyalin (salivary amylase) is one of the necessary digestive enzymes and is found in the saliva.

Ideas to help you remember to slow down:

Candlelight, soft music and flowers aren't just for romantic dinners

Good conversation

Sit down - standing and walking around while eating is too distracting and not relaxing

If eating alone, sit near a window and gaze at the beauties of nature

Turn off all electronics and focus on the meal - you'll be less likely to be distracted and wolf-down your meal without even thinking

Remind yourself, there's no need to rush

Make meals an event, not a chore to get over with - it doesn't have to be complicated or consume too much time, just simple little things make a difference

Say Yum! Yum! out loud while chewing

Set your fork down between bites and don't pick it up again until you've swallowed what's already in your mouth

Relax and breathe deeply

FUN FACTS:
Hate to exercise? Well, chewing is a relaxing exercise, so look at it as a calorie burning activity that you can enjoy while sitting down! The more you chew the more calories you burn!

Chewing increases your energy level in 2 ways. First the body doesn't have to work as hard to digest the food. Secondly, your body is absorbing more of the nutrients and giving it more of what it needs.

The brain takes about 20 minutes to register that we've had enough to eat. When slowing down and chewing our food 30-100 times, the body will automatically feel full sooner and you'll be on the track to easy weight loss. You'll feel more satisfied with less food, body feels healthier because of all the nutrition it's getting.

You'll feel even more relaxed and energized when your meal is over.

What have you found helps you relax and chew more at meal time?

First of all, here's my very own Cocoa Berry Detox Smoothie recipe. (This is a big deal for me, because I don't like to fix food; it's got to be easy and quick).

Secondly, the owner of The Chocolate Conspiracy has given us a 15% discount code to use. (This is who I purchase my delicious raw cocoa powder from.)

Here are a few reasons I chose these particular ingredients for my smoothie:

PLAIN YOGURT: Contains probiotics
that aid in digestion. Make sure to use only yogurt with 'live, active
cultures' and check the ingredient list to make sure no artificial ingredients
have been added and definitely no added sugar. I used to make my own yogurt by
the gallon when my kids were little. Now I use FAGE Greek Total Milk Yogurt.

RAW COCOA POWDER: #1 source of antioxidants. Also
has significant amounts of magnesium, iron, manganese, and chromium. More
importantly, as every
woman knows, it increases your mood and energy.

BERRIES: Known for being a high antioxidant food, anti-inflammatory, high in
fiber, vitamin C, plus more goodies! Strawberries, blackberries, goji berries,
camu berries, blueberries, and cranberries are some of my favorite. If using
frozen or dried berries, check the ingredients to make sure no sugar has been added.
Just because a package says 100% natural doesn't mean it's healthy. Get into
the habit of reading the labels/ingredients. You'll be glad you did.

Special Note: When you combine cocoa and berries you increase the bodies
ability to absorb the antioxidants two to three times. In other words, more of
the good stuff makes it into your blood stream.

RAW HONEY: I love raw honey, it's my favorite sweetener and here's why - it's a
complete food source, containing all the substances necessary to sustain life, (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and water). Pretty cool isn't it. Plus raw,
unfiltered honey is the #1 natural enzyme source.

COCONUT OIL: Anti-viral, anti-fungal, and a necessary saturated fat for proper
brain cell activity.

CEYLON CINNAMON: Not all cinnamon's are created equal. (This is a subject for
another post.) Cinnamon is a good source for manganese, fiber, iron, and
calcium. Aids in brain function, anti-inflammatory, plus more.

Cocoa Berry Detox Smoothie

1 cup plain yogurt

2 tablespoons raw cocoa powder

2 types of berries equaling 3 cups total - frozen, fresh, or dried

¼ cup raw honey

2 tablespoon coconut oil

1 teaspoon ceylon cinnamon pwd

Blend in Vitamix (or blender of your choice) for about 2 minutes or until smooth.
Makes about 4 cups.
Adjust ingredients to your own personal taste. Remember that no ONE food is a miracle cure, but a wise combination of nutrient rich foods will improve your overall health and wellness.

NOTE: To improve your eating experience and to give your body the best nutrient absorption, enjoy your Cocoa Berry Detox Smoothie by slowing down, relaxing, and savoring every tasty bite!

The main reason I started buying from The Chocolate Conspiracy is because they use honey as a sweetener. AJ Wentworth, creator of The Chocolate Conspiracy shop has given me a 15% discount to share with you. Just enter CONSPIRE at checkout to receive your discount. What's best is this coupon code will never expire so you can keep coming back for the best raw cocoa powder at a great price. The Chocolate Conspiracy not only has delicious raw cocoa powder, but the yummiest chocolate treats. My favorite are the Blackberry Ginger Bar and the Chocolate Coconut Macaroons .

Although I enrolled at Institute For Integrative Nutrition (see widgets on my sidebar and header) just a couple of months or so ago, my own health journey began about 28 years ago when my 4th child was born. He was breech and I had toxemia. After his breech delivery, I still had the effects of toxemia a year later. Thus began my search for better health. I tend to be allergic to modern medicine, so my only alternative was to look into alternative healing (pun intended!).

Having a spiritual connection is part of being healthy. Spirituality has been shown to reduce depression, improve blood pressure, and boost the immune system. Also, people with a religious practice suffer less from depression and mental illnesses. That being said, when I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Anlylosing Spondylitis, I went to God for help and direction. As I was fervently praying about what to do about these diseases and how to manage them in a non-traditional way, the distinct answer came, that HE would guide me along and give me what I needed when I needed it...that answer gave me mixed feelings. First I was relieved to know God was even interested in my health and second I was unnerved because I like everything straight forward and upfront. This answer/process was NOT going to be that simple.

It's been a long and hard 28 years since my journey began. Lots of successes and several set backs, but I felt I was always being moved in an upward direction. My most current step has taken me back to school (at age 53) studying to become a Health Coach. I love what I'm learning and doing. One of the first concepts I learned at IIN was that I am my first and most important client. I can use what I'm learning to heal myself and that way I'll be a better health coach for others, because I'm honestly 'walking my talk'.

So far the things I've been learning as a Health Coach have had these benefits on my own health:

I've started loosing weight (cool for someone who is post-menopausal and in a wheelchair). The weight is just falling off at a slow and steady pace. The best part is, I'm not feeling deprived and my cravings are no longer in control. Learning how to 'crowd out' and 'deconstruct cravings' has been awesome.

brain fog is about 98% gone

I have more energy

inflamation has dropped significantly

white tongue is now pink

my gums are pink and healthier than they've been in years

sleeping good and waking up ready to go (big deal for someone with a chronic illness)

digestion has improved

happier

more optimistic about the future

finding fun ways to exercise

deeper love and appreciation for my Heavenly Father

I've been able to put some broken relationships in better perspective

One of the most impressive concepts taught at The Institute For Integrative Nutrition is that health is more than just the food we put into our bodies. It's also our relationships, spirituality, physical exercise, and career. All these affect our health. In other words, eating all the broccoli in the world will not help mend a dysfunctional marriage. I'm being trained how to coach myself, family members, friends and anyone interested how to heal all these aspects in their lives.

As you can tell, I'm excited about this new journey the Lord has given me and I'm grateful for HIS interest in even the small details of my life.

In a couple of months, I'll be opening a new website dedicated to my Health Coaching practice, until then, I'll be sharing my journey here! Hope you'll subscribe (located on my sidebar) so you can join me on this dynamic new adventure!

NOTE: I became interested in attending IIN when I came across a blog that was written by an IIN graduate. She knew so much, and her posts made sense to me. If you're interested in learning more about IIN, just click on one of the widgets on my sidebar. They're even offering their Integrative Nutrition - Feed Your Hunger For Health And Happiness book for free.
It got me to thinking about the first time I offered my own personal prayer.

I grew up in a praying family. We had family prayer every morning and evening. We prayed at each meal..… each of us took turns offering the prayers in our family, so praying wasn’t a new thing for me. But, I’d never offered my own personal prayer, you know, the one where you kneel by your bed and pray before going to sleep.

I was probably around 7-8 years old and had never prayed personally to my Heavenly Father. I’d been taught to do this, but always felt embarrassed at the thought of doing it. Finally one night guilt got the better of me and I slunk out of bed…hoping that if I could just quietly slide out of bed, offer my prayer and quickly get back into bed no one would notice. The funny thing was, I was in the room all alone and no one would see me praying anyway – except Heavenly Father; I was convinced I could be subtle enough that I could offer my prayer and get safely back under my covers even before HE noticed.

So, here I am in the dark, I’ve successfully slid out of my bed with ‘no one noticing’ and was kneeling and saying my first personal prayer….when all of the sudden in walked my dad. Awkwardddddd! I was so embarrassed, here I was offering my first personal prayer to Heavenly Father and in walks my dad….what’s up with that? Looking back on it now, I’m sure it was for the benefit of my dad….you see, as a child, I was not the typical quiet, sweet little daughter - Nothing like my tender, peacemaking mom and 3 sisters. I’m sure my dad worried about his wild and ferocious little indian of a daughter…if I’d been a boy, it would have been okay, but 'back in the day', girls were expected to be soft, gentle, little homemakers, imitating their mothers. I on the other hand, had an independent spirit that couldn’t wait to burst out doors, run, jump, climb, and create all kinds of mischief. Tom boy was what I was referred to.

I loved being outside. I came to life when I was outside. I had my own secret hut made in the wood pile. I had all kinds of adventures in our pasture with the calves and horses. I even had a special maple tree that I could climb and pretend I was a bird. (If I believed in reincarnation, I’m sure I would have been a bird.) I could climb trees better than any of the boys and once in my special maple tree I was in a world all my own. I could see the entire valley… all the other houses and trees in my community, I could fly over to my best friend’s house, light in her tree and visit with her for hours. Or I could soar high in the clouds and just feel the freedom of being able to be who I was.

So, I’m sure Heavenly Father wanted to reassure my dad that there was nothing to worry about, because his little wild indian of a daughter was saying her personal prayers and felt a strong connection to the Divine.

Thus began my lifelong pursuit of communicating with my Father in Heaven. Until the day he died, my dad continued to worry about me because I was so independent and didn’t follow the crowd, but I imagine when things got tuff for him in connection with me, he could look back on the moment Heavenly Father gave him a glimpse of hope when he saw me saying my first personal prayer.

Do you remember the first time you prayed? Maybe you've never prayed before, if so I encourage you to do so. As you can see, I survived my first prayer and my life has become more rich and abundant because of prayer. Praying is just like talking to your best friend. Speak from the heart and you can't go wrong. I promise, HE will listen and will love hearing from you. If you'd like to learn more about my faith, please feel free to contact me.
Hopefully, I've shown myself to be a woman of integrity and spiritually strong. My testimony is a sacred part of my life, it contributes a lot to who I am and how I live each day. Whenever I share a part of my testimony and what I know to be true on my blog, I feel like I'm exposing myself. Never sure how you, my friends, are going to react, it makes me a little nervous. But what I feel is so powerful, I can't help but share the joy and knowledge that brings such happiness to me.

Some of you will kindly pat me on the head and think to yourselves, "Poor misguided Becky Jane." But, I ask you to stop a moment, and ponder what I share. What if God has restored His original church once again on the earth....His church in all it's fullness and glory....with living Prophets and Apostles....wouldn't that be an amazing event? As you watch the short video below, ask God to guide you...ask to know for yourself if what I say is true or false. Put it to the test.

I hope your spring day is full of fun!
Some were huge, and some were very small and seemed insignificant...but none the less they were amazing! I'd like to share one such moment with you.

I've been absent for quite awhile from blogging and felt it was time to share a sweet tender mercy I received the other day. As many of you know, I have rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondilitis. Both have put me in a wheelchair and also crippled my hands so they don't work as well as I would love.

The other day I was tending my DARLING 2 year old GRANDdaughter Little S. (Of course, all grandchildren are darling to their grandmas)

I love being a woman, mother and especially a GRANDmother. She calls me Nana, and we have such a great time together..... Anyway, to get back to my story, Little S. was hungry and I was trying to open her 'pack-pack' as she calls it.

Usually I can twist the lid with no problem, but today it just wouldn't budge. I twisted and twisted, I tried prying it off with a fork and still the lid wouldn't come off. After about 10 minutes of frustration, it occurred to me the Heaven Father could help me get this lid open. Little S. and I offered a prayer that we could get the lid open. After the prayer, I gave the pack-pack lid a twist and it came right off....does God answer even little silly prayers? YES indeed!

After the lid came off, we gave a prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving!
When I return I hope to have a newly designed blog, but in the meantime, I wanted to share a Christmas gift for all you amazing friends. I pray you will have a very Merry Christmas!

If you're struggling this Christmas... Click HERE

Looking for inspiration on how to serve others this Christmas?

Mary and Joseph Traveling to Bethlehem. This is for all you mothers and fathers. I can so relate to Mary at the pond... Click HERE

My favorite...My heart is so touched by Joseph's expression as he brings his sweet Mary into the stable. Click Here

To truly find the Spirit of Christmas, look for Christ and you will feel overwhelming emotions of love this season.

Step back and contemplate what Christmas means to you. Is your life stressed emotionally and financially? Make the changes you need to...don't let this special season pass you by.

Remember to be a good receiver as well as a good giver.

Become more interested in people instead of things.

The greatest gift I can share with you is my abiding testimony that Jesus is the Christ. His atonement was for everyone. There is no sin so powerful that Christs love cannot redeem us.

I also bear witness that the Boom of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. It is the second witness promised us in the Bible. Together they establish the true and everlasting gospel of joy and redemption.

I love our Father in Heaven. I love my Savior, and I love the Holy Spirit.

This little video clip would be fun to share with your children and GRANDchildren. The Coat

In conclusion I hope you enjoy these pictures.
The first step in creating a wonderful Christmas without going into debt is making a mindset change. Culture and traditions can be changed....

Last year I started stocking up on supplies to make a fun CLOTHESLINE countdown for my GRANDkids. I shopped the after-Christmas sales and got super discounted prices. Most of the items are gift card holders, just right for slipping a piece of candy or small toy in.

Since I was making 3 separate sets, I had to keep within my budget. I also found lots of little toys and fun things to stuff inside each item. I only had a few empty items that I set aside to put candy in. (Just so ya know, I didn't buy the candy until now.)

Cracker Barrel, The Dollar Store, and Wal-Mart were fantastic for finding all the stuff I needed. The only problem was waiting almost an entire year before I could send them out to my GRANDkids.

I found the little clothespins at Wal-Mart in their craft section. The little hangers were from a paper doll set, my kids used to have but didn't use anymore.

This is a photo one of my daughters sent of their Clothesline Advent Calendar...Isn't it darling! She only had a skinny wall to mount hers on so she divided it up into 3 separate sections. My other daughter is going to hang hers in one long clothesline across their fireplace mantle.

Some of the things I stuffed inside were: Santa straws, crayons, note pads, sparkely nail polish for the girls, Hot Wheels cars for the boys, hair clips, etc.

Do you have any good ideas for Advent Calendars?

Food - Our Thanksgiving feast is very traditional (except we don't do cranberry sauce).

Family - As many as we can get into one house. Lots of noise, laughter and confussion.

Lum and Abner - No Thanksgiving is complete without listening to our favorite Thanksgiving story, Chester the Turkey. Lum and Abner is an old radio show and this is my favorite! One year my girls memorized it and performed it as a skit...too funny!

Singing - We have several songs fit for the occassion. "Over the River and Through the Woods", "5 Fat Turkeys Are We", and "There's a Big Fat Turkey Out On Grandpas Farm". I've included a couple of Youtube versions of "Over the River..."
Funny

More Traditional

Crafts - Here are some of my favorite links for all kinds of kid friendly activities:

Enchanted Learning

Too many weaknesses- too fat, too lazy, too angry, even too much sin. Is it possible that our garbage can be reclaimed and turned into a beautiful place? I know it can...through the atonement of Jesus Christ, there is no sin so awful that we cannot experience his cleansing and reclaiming power.

Disclaimer: I'm not being paid for this, just wanted to share what's been going on with me the last month. I bought the full course and don't regret it one bit. Right now you can get a taste of what's going on for FREE, then if you like what you're learning, you can dive right in and get the full course like I did.

This is more than just a fashion course. It's all about bringing out your true, inner beauty, because we are all amazingly beautiful daughters of God.

I look at it like this. I'm a great piece of art, created by the Master, so why not make sure I get the best picture frame to show the world what a great creator the Lord is? It has nothing to do with vanity...everything to do with bringing honor to HIM.

Some of the thing I've enjoyed learning:

What colors, fabrics, textures, and styles are best for me.

What hair styles make me look great! (Still working on this one...hard to work with short, naturally curly hair.) Still experimenting, which is fun and not frustrating anymore, because I know where I'm going and not just guessing anymore!

I love shopping for clothes now, because there is no more guess work. Plus there are so many ways to re-purpose what I already own into what will work for my Type 3.

No more wasting money on clothes that I 'hope' will look good on me and then going home and watching them sit in my closet unworn because they just aren't right.

The next time I buy glasses, I know exactly what will enhance my features. Buying glasses has been one of my biggest stresses, but not anymore! Wahoo! (I can't wait for my current glasses to break! Ummmm!)

Everything I needed to learn was online. I'm learning right in the comfort of my own home!

Besides this, I understand why I do things the way I do and I've learned it's fantastic being a rich and dynamic Type 3 woman instead of a soft, subtle woman...which I thought was who I was supposed to be but in reality was contrary to the true me.

I'm also learning to see my husband and children in their true nature and lovin' them even more because now I understand why they do things the way they do.

I am a Type 3 girl which is FIRE. (Those of you who really know my will laugh at this because it is so depicting of the way I move and do things...lol). CL is a Type 2 which is WATER...so grateful for his steady, smooth, calm nature. I have kids that are Type 1 which is AIR, Type 4 which is EARTH and of course there's a couple of Type 3 and Type 2. All in all we make up a pretty diverse group which used to frustrate me sometimes. Understanding their true nature and how they move has brought a lot more peace to our family and to my soul.

What Type of woman is really you? Don't use guess work. Find out HERE!
W!N your very own VeraTemp Non-Contact Personal Use Thermometer!

Now that the flu season is upon us, it's a great time for this
g!veaway. One lucky person will win this item.

What I like about the VeraTemp:

Great for everyone. If you have children or are caring for an elderly family member this thermometer is so easy to use. As some of you know, taking the temperature of an adult whose cranky and confused can be very difficult. Using the VeraTemp, they don't even know it's being done.

Non-contact. No more waking up or disturbing the patient just to take their temp. Also no worries about spreading germs from using a contaminated thermometer. No expensive shields to replace either.

3 settings. #1 for BODY temp. #2 for ROOM temp. This setting is to check the persons room temperature so they stay comfortable. #3 SURFACE temp. Helpful in checking temperatures of food, bath water etc.

Instant reading. No more waiting with a probe stuck in your mouth or rectum. The VeraTemp gives instant and accurate readings.

Auto-Off. I don't need to remember to turn it off. With all the concerns of caring for someone ill, this is one less thing to think about.

If you can't wait for the g!veaway and want to purchase you own VeraTemp now, VeraTemp is offering you a $2 rebate. Just click HERE.

(This is taken from a post I did last year). Also, watch for a G!veaway and review coming Thursday November 1, 2012 for the new and improved VeraTemp Non-Contact Thermometer.

Home Remedies:

Most of the items used can be found in your kitchen. Just remember these are not to take the place of treatments and advice given by your health care professional. These home remedies can enhance your overall health and are not necessarily medical cures.

INSOMNIA

· Taking a warm bath an hour or so before bed will help you relax. Be aware that a warm bath just before bed time can also stimulate and revive you so make sure you take one a least 1 hour before bedtime.

· Keep on a regular schedule. Your body likes schedules and will relax more easily if you go to bed and rise at the same time each day. (I know that this can be difficult for moms to do).

Post Nasal Drip / Sore Throat

· Drink plenty of fluids, this keeps the mucus thin and your nose and body hydrated. ( A good rule of thumb is: drink ½ your body weight in ounces,…say you weigh 100lbs. Cut that amount in ½ and change it to ounces, that would make it 50 oz. of water a day)

1. 1 tablespoon honey, any kind

1 tablespoon vinegar, preferably apple-cider vinegar

8 ounces hot water

Combine all ingredients in a glass and sip slowly (but don't let it get cold). Use as often as desired. (some feel that honey should be avoided in children 2 years old and younger).

Sip slowly.

FLU

· Plan on sleeping and otherwise taking it easy for a few days.

· Drink plenty of liquids, preferably fruit juices. This will keep you hydrated and give you some nourishment.

· If throwing up is an issue tiny sips of Coke (de-fizzed) can help.

· Keep a humidifier going. Influenza thrives in dryer air caused by the cold temperatures, furnaces and wood stoves.

· A cough that brings up mucus is good. This is the body’s way of getting rid of the mucus and keeps in out of the lungs.

· Warm Chicken broth and Chicken soup are still good stand-bys for someone with the flu.

· A dry hacking cough can keep you and others awake. Honey is a natural expectorant. Mix 1 tablespoon honey into 1 cup hot water, stir well and sip…add a squeeze of lemon if you like.

Honey, onion, garlic, Echinacea and golden seal root are all natural ways to boost your immune system. Incorporate the first three in your daily diet for added benefits. Use Echinacea and/or golden seal root only as needed.

This keeps the intestines moist and the flow goes smoother!

Do you have some tried and true remedies you use to help your family get through the winter months? I love to hear.
Every fall, the Primary (ages 3-11) put on a program during Sacrament meeting. For me, it is always one of the most fun and most spiritual meetings.

The program began with the children singing 'As A Child of God'. The words are powerful and so inspiring.

♫ I came to earth with power to choose.

Good choices bless me and my family too.

As a child of God, I receive special light:

The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.

I feel so safe and happy because

Such feelings of peace come from family love.

As a child of God, I receive special light:

The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.

In my own home I’ll happily serve.

I’ll strengthen my family by my good works.

As a child of God, I receive special light:

The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right. ♫

Our Ward (Congregation) has about 50 Primary children and each one of them had a speaking part. Since CL and I are teachers for the 10-11 year old class, we were able to participate too. Our class was asked the question, "How has keeping the Word of Wisdom blessed your life?" Each child in our class came up with their own answers. Here are some of their answers:

Marlynne - Some of the blessings that I receive from obeying the Word of Wisdom is that I will stay healthy.

Vanessa - The Word of Wisdom says not to smoke or drink alcohol or other harmful substances. We also need to eat healthy foods, drink lots of water and get plenty of sleep. I know Heavenly Father will bless us if we keep the Word of Wisdom.

Emily - When I keep the Word of Wisdom, not only am I happy, but I'm healthy too. I am blessed to to have the Word of Wisdom to guide me.

McKenna - When we follow the Word of Wisdom, it will help us with future challenges in life.

Katie - You get blessings like good health, prosperity and not being addicted when you follow the Word of Wisdom. Your constant companion, if you do what's right, is the Holy Ghost. We all need the Holy Ghost in our lives. Without it, we would be hopelessly lost.

I am so impressed with the rising generation. We are in good hands with these kids and so many others like them.

3 Nephi 9:22 Therefore, whoso repenteth and cometh unto me as a little child, him will I receive, for of such is the kingdom of God. Behold, for such I have laid down my life, and have taken it up again; therefore repent, and come unto me ye ends of the earth, and be saved.

As many of you know, I'm in a wheelchair. When CL and I go grocery shopping, CL pushes the cart and I follow along side using my feet to pedal in my wheelchair. All-in-all, it works out pretty good. The hard part is when we're done checking out and heading to the car. Our local Wal-Mart has a sloping parking lot and it's too steep for me to handle on my own. CL usually does a great job hanging on to my wheelchair with one hand and pulling the grocery cart with the other hand.

One day while doing our balancing act in the parking lot, we heard a voice from behind say, "Can I push your cart for you?" Wow, were we surprised. Grateful for the help we said yes. We were parked at the other end of the parking lot and this sweet woman pushed our cart all the way for us. Since then, we have been aided on a regular basis from total strangers just wanting to help. People are so awesome!

Another act of Good Samaritan-izm happened, at a Sunday meeting, several weeks ago. During this meeting the Lord taught me a great lesson. It was Stake Conference, (a local Church meeting made up of 8 Wards - Congregations.) The meeting was 2 hours long. Across the aisle was a father and his young daughter. Throughout the meeting I could see the father diligently trying to keep his toddler quietly entertained. She looked about 2 years old. As the meeting progressed, the little girl got bored and started throwing a tantrum, not just a little one, but, a BIG one. I was so glad when the father finally took her out. I said to myself, "Now I can concentrate on what the speaker was saying," (which, by the way was about being more Christ-like). Ummmmmm, do ya get the feeling I was missing something...

Well, after a while the father came back with his still reluctant daughter. She was quieter, but I could tell she was on the verge of another tantrum. I quietly shook my head to myself and passed judgement....if I was her mother, I'd get her under control...

All of the sudden, a young girl about 10 years old came from behind, handed the toddler a sheet of stickers and a blank piece of paper. The toddler grew silent and the father gave a very grateful smile. My lesson was learned.

Have you had any similar experiences? I'd enjoy hearing from you!

My Saturday and Sunday were filled with words from our living Prophets and Apostles. I invite you to listen to a short excerpt from President Monsons concluding talk...He has given us the counsel the Lord wants us to have for the times we live in.
There's all kinds of false rumors roaming around and I hope this will clear up what's really true about us. None of us profess to be perfect, we're just like everyone else, trying to be the best we can. Since being a Mormon (or a Latter-Day Saint), we love to share the joy and knowledge our faith gives us.

If you have any questions, I'd love to answer them. I'm not trying to convert you, I just love sharing what I know. Also, if you want come and listen to the Prophet and Apostles speak, General Conference is Saturday and Sunday. I promise you that General Conference has something just for you. To view, click HERE anytime after 10 am MT Saturday October 6th. God has NOT forgotten us, nor has he left us without teachings for our day.
Moving into a new home has it's challenges, but who would have thought that the cheese grater would be one of the biggest, and funniest challenge.

I expect to loose my teenagers once in awhile, knowing they'll turn up when they're hungry or need money. I even expect to occassionally loose my husband when he comes across a good book to read. And, when my little doggy friend turns up missing, I know she'll be back wagging her tail and begging for attention... BUT to repeatedly loose the cheese grater is unacceptable.

I like a place for everything and eveything in it's place, (one of the side-effects of menopause, I'm sure.) When I was designing my new kitchen, I knew where everything was going to be put. The dishes are close to the sink, the baking items are in the bakers cabinets, refridgetator dishes next to the fridge and so on. I EVEN had a special place set aside for my cheese grater.

Admitedly, my cheese grater is not the prettiest item in the kitchen, nor is it the most used, but when I need my cheese grater, I want to be able to FIND MY CHEESE GRATER.

...the most common phrase I hear coming from my kitchen is:

"Where's the cheese grater?"

I say it, CL says it, and the kids say it. And guess what...no one knows where it is. No one saw it last, no one used it last, and no one put it away after it was washed.

And, thus the search begins...I threaten everyone with their lives if they even dare leave the house until we find the missing item. We eventually find it in the knife drawer, or in the bread drawer, or even in the fridge....but NEVER in the place it's supposed to be! On a regular basis I'm laughing and shaking my head in amazement at the missing cheese grater phenomenon.

So, if you happen to find my cheese grater, please call me and I'll come pick it up.

I wonder if they make beepers for cheese graters...

PARABLE OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS

Once upon a
time there were 3 little pigs. The first little pig didn’t want to waste time
building a house, so he built his house out of straw because that was the
easiest. He built his house very fast which
left him more time to play.

The second
little pig was just about as lazy as the first little pig. Playing was all he
wanted to do, so he built his house out of sticks. His stick house went up
pretty fast which left him more time to play.

The third
little pig wanted a strong house with a firm foundation. He built his house out
of bricks and cement. It was hard work and took a long time. While the other 2
pigs were singing and dancing, the third little pig was working very hard.

The other 2
little pigs would tease and make fun of the third little pig. They wouldn’t
help him; all they wanted to do was have a good time. But when the wolf came,
we all know what happened. The first little pigs house of straw couldn’t
withstand the huffing and puffing of the big wolf.

The first
little pig ran to his brother’s house made of sticks. He ran there for safety
and protection from the big bad wolf. BUT, we all know that the second little
pigs house of sticks was just as weak as the house of straw. It took little effort for the wolf to blow
the stick house down.

These 2
little pigs were left with no protection from the BIG BAD WOLF. Without the help of the third little pig,
these 2 little guys would be devoured.

Christ taught
us: But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which
hate you,

Bless them
that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you…

And as ye
would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

For if ye
love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that
love them.Luke 6:27,
28, 31,32 KJV

If we are
built on a firm foundation, then not only can our friends depend on us when the
winds of the adversary blow, but we may even be the source of saving our
enemies from the dangerous grasp of Satan.

To help clarify,
I’m NOT talking about people who are living in an abusive situation. What my
little story is trying to point out is that we CAN pray for our enemies. We CAN
help our enemies when they are in need. And we CAN be in control of our own
situation and build our home upon the Rock of our Redeemer so when the winds
and floods of adversity come, our house will NOT wash away. We can then be a good friend and help
those who have been foolish and hopefully bring them to the high ground to enjoy
safety and peace with us.

The trends of today present difficult situations for each of us. All too often good is called bad and bad is considered good. I appreciate the scriptures, because they keep me focused on what is REAL... morality, kindness, honesty, integrity, virtue.

When evaluating what kind of friend you are, ask yourself this question: "Do I want to be the kind of friend that encourages these values or the kind of friend that just goes along with whatever happens?"

Good is still good and bad is still bad. I want to be the kind of friend that helps others want to be the best they can be...sometimes that means I'm my only friend, and President Thomas S Monson says that's okay!

"My young friends, be strong. The philosophies of men surround us. The face of sin today often wears the mask of tolerance. Do not be deceived; behind that facade is heartache, unhappiness, and pain. You know what is right and what is wrong, and no disguise, however appealing, can change that. The character of transgression remains the same. If your so-called friends urge you to do anything you know to be wrong, you be the one to make a stand for right, even if you stand alone. Have the moral courage to be a light for others to follow. There is no friendship more valuable than your own clear conscience, your own moral cleanliness—and what a glorious feeling it is..."

We need to be an example to others, because the media is sure making it difficult to determine what good friends are all about. I watched a current teen movie the other day and was surprised at the behavior that was considered the norm. Friends encouraging eachother to get even with an enemy, immorality was praised, immodesty encouraged and so forth. These type of actions are not what good friends want for eachother.

If we want to be a good friend, we need courage. Sometimes we will find ourselves in situations that are compromising. We will have to stand for what is going to help our friends see that we care about what is best for them and for ourselves. Surprisingly, if we stand up and make our desires for good known, our friends will usually latch on to our courage and will join us.

BUT, this isn't always the case. Sometimes we'll be teased, ridiculed, or even shunned. We need to understand that that's okay. Everyone has to make their own choices and everyone has to live with their own choices. When I go to bed at night I want to know that I can live with my choices.

An example is my husband, CL. At his work he's known as the man who doesn't swear, smoke, drink, or participate in dirty jokes and stories. Some of the guys at work kid him, but most of them admire him and respect him. When he walks into a room and someone is swearing or telling a dirty joke, they'll stop because they don't want to offend him. They know they can count on CL to be a good friend and that he wants them to be the best they can be. His example goes a long way! (Plus he's so dang cute and sweet, who wouldn't want him for a friend!)

Our friends need to know they can rely on us to uplift and strengthen them.

What To Expect From Friends

I'm not sure where this came from, but this acrostic gets right to the heart of what we want and need from our friends.

F - forgiving
R - respects your standards
I - inspires you to be like Christ
E - example
N - nice and kind
D - dependable and loyal

When I reminisce about the friends I've had in the past, my best friend when I was a child was Shar. We were neighbors and inseparable.

In high school I was part of a group of young men and women who met all the 'friend' criteria. We had such fun together. I knew I could have a good time and be safe with these kids.

When I became an adult, my best friend became my husband CL. He knows me pretty good and still likes me...

Other friends include my parents, and some special bloggy friends. Even some of my children and siblings are my friends. Pretty cool!

Of course the best of all best friends are my Heavenly Father, his son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Without these 3 in my life I would not be the woman I am now.

Who are some of your friends and what do you look for in a friend?

Next week I'd like to discuss what our friends should expect from us. I hope you'll join in the conversation.
