When reader Andreas wrote in to share his desktop configuration, we were stunned at the level of nerdy information we had just encountered—this is perhaps the geekiest desktop we've ever seen.

Andreas started his ultimate desktop project when he fell in love with Expose's ability to show the desktop by moving your mouse to a corner of the screen—so he set out to use that feature to display every piece of information he could think of using GeekTool to display text files on the desktop.

What makes this desktop so striking isn't just the lack of a blended wallpaper—Andreas wanted to focus on the information—it's the graph in the lower right-hand side that tracks his vital statistics, including his blood pressure and weight information. To generate this graph, he created a command line script similar to our founding editor's Todo.txt utility, but this script accepts daily health information and writes it to a file. The graph is then generated using that data by running it through GNUplot and added to the screen with GeekTool—a great way to keep motivated to stay healthy.

The rest of the desktop includes a calendar, to-do list, date, moonphase, and even economic indicators—everything that a geek might want to see at a glance—and presented in what must be the geekiest desktop we've ever seen. Photoshop Quick Tips #6: Cloudy Text

Last year I wrote a tutorial showing how to create clouds using Adobe Photoshop. However, I have received quite a few emails asking me how to create a text made with clouds. Because of that I decided to write a very quick tutorial showing how to do it.

Following our Quick Tips series, in this tutorial I will show you how to create a text with clouds, using brushes and other few interesting light effects.

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop, I used 1920x1200 pixels for the size. Then using the Layer Style apply the Gradient Overlay to the background layer. Use Normal for the Blend Mode, 100% Opacity, Radial for the Style and #07090b and #27160a for the Colors. Also increase the Scale to 115%.

Step 2

With the Horizontal Type Tool (T) type CLOUDS, all caps. I used Helevtica Neue Ultra Light. It's important that you use a very light font because we will concert it to a path. After that go to Layer>Rasterize>Type. That will rasterize the layer, then in the Layer Palette, hold the Command(mac)/Control(pc) key and click on the thumbnail of the layer. That will create a marquee selection from the text.

Step 3

With the marquee selection from the previous step, go to the Path Palette and click on the icon Make Work Path from the Selection (1). Then Save the path so you can use it later on. You can do that by clicking on the icon that is on the top right icon (3) and click Save Path.

Step 4

With Direct Selection Tool (A) let's edit the path. Start deleting the inner part of the paths like, each letter has to have only one path like in the image 2.

Step 5

Let's create a brush that will be used to create the clouds. I have already published a tutorial showing how to make this brush, you can check out at http://abduzeedo.com/beautiful-fluffy-clouds-photoshop-christmas-tutorial . But below you can see what's necessary to create the brush. Go to Window>Brushes. Select a regular and very soft brush. Select the Shape Dynamics, Texture and Other Dynamics. For the Texture is very important that you change the scale every time you change the brush tip scale.

Step 6

Again with the Direct Selection Tool (A), click with the right button of the mouse over the path in the image and select Stroke Path. A dialog box will appear, the stroke path window, where you can select what you will use to stroke the path. Make sure you have the brush we have just created selected and then select Brush. Also make sure that you have the color white selected for the brush color. (1).

We will repeat that 2 more times, but each one in a new layer. The first time we used white, the second let's use black and the third, white again. That will add volume to the clouds and make them more realistic.

Step 7

Let's add create some more clouds, (image 1), then add another layer and go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Make sure you had black and white for the colors. After that change the Blend Mode of this layer to Color Dodge and with the Eraser Tool (E) delete some areas leaving just the ones closer to the clouds text.

Also let's add some light effects. To do that add a folder in the Layer Palette, this folder has to be beneath the clouds we created with the brush tool. Change the Blend Mode of the folder to Color Dodge. Inside this folder add a new layer. Then with the Brush Tool (B) and white for the color, start painting some clouds. These clouds we will be painting will be light effects so if you want you can change the opacity of the brush by clicking on the number keys (1-0). Use the image below for reference.

Step 8

Now just add some stars. To do that create a new layer and fill it with black. Then go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise. Use 10% for the Amount and Gaussian for the Type. After that go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. Increase the Black until you have just a few stars then increase the white to make them brighter. Also change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge.

Step 9

Select all layers and duplicate them, then go to Layer>Merge Layers. After that go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 12 for the amount. Also change the Blend Mode to Screen. That will create a nice glow and make the clouds more realistic.

Conclusion

You can add more light effects like some bigger stars or even play with colors, the idea of this tutorial was to show you a very quick tip on how to create clouds and a text made with clouds. Now it's all about playing and testing different variations.

Il Finder, quella faccina che vi sorride dall’estrema sinistra del Dock, è il navigatore del filesystem integrato nel vostro Mac. Si tratta di un processo sempre attivo in background perché, come è facile intuire, sottende alla possibilità di navigare con agilità attraverso le directories del vostro Mac.
Il Finder è responsabile anche della visualizzazione delle icone sul vostro Desktop, che altro non è se non la rappresentazione grafica dell’omonima cartella sotto la directory dell’utente corrente.

Ma tutto questo probabilmente lo sapete già. Per fare il verso alla Settimana Enigmistica, forse non sapevate che… il Finder si può chiudere del tutto, come una normale applicazione. Tutto quel che serve, ancora una volta, è un comando da Terminale.

Five Best Malware Removal Tools [Hive Five]

On Thursday we asked you to share your favorite tool for purging malware from your computer. We've tallied the votes and we're back with the top five contenders for best malware removal tool.

The internet—unfortunately—isn't a never-ending buffet of secure open-source software and Bollywood-style musicals starring LOLCats. There are people and organizations that delight in stealing your personal data, hijacking your computer, and making a general nuisance of themselves through malicious software. This week we're highlighting the top five tools for removing software with ill-intentions from you PC.

Spybot Search & Destroy (Windows, Freeware)

Spybot Search & Destroy has made quite a name for itself over the years, earning accolades from both general and computer-focused publications. Spybot Search & Destroy is the highest ranked freeware tool at 2Spyware.com, a website that ranks malware removal tools. In addition to scanning for malware, Spybot Search & Destroy also has a variety of additional functionality, including a botnet scanner, hosts-file modification (to keep malware from calling home), a secure file shredder, and a dummy code feautre (it replaces malicious or questionable adware modules with inert code so the dependent program will keep functioning). As an added bonus Spybot Search & Destroy is compatible with every version of Windows dating back to Windows 95.

SUPERAntiSpyware (Windows, $30)

SUPERAntiSpyware is available as both a freeware and premium edition like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (see below), but the level of restrictions on the freeware edition are considerably higher. The free version is limited to basic on-demand scanning and malware removal. The premium version includes real-time scanning, registry protection, a scheduling service, auto-scan on startup, and 50 startup diagnostics to stop malware infections before they spread. One of SUPERAntiSpyware's strongest selling points is its high level of compatibility with other protection tools like Avira, Kaspersky, Symantec, and McAfee. In most cases it can be run along side other tools without any conflict.

ComboFix (Windows, Freeware)

ComboFix is just as spartan as the screenshot here makes it look. You download ComboFix, run it, and it takes care of the rest. The basic ComboFix process looks like this: It backs up your registry, checks to see if you have Windows Recovery Console installed, and then it goes to town on your system scanning away through 40+ stages. When it's done, ComboFix spits out a log file and lists all the malware it found, which ones it was able to remove, and which ones you'll have to use your Google-fu to look up how to remove manually. It isn't fancy, but it gets the job done and gives you a detailed report at the end to take to security forums for help if you need it.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Windows, $25)

Malwarebytes' flagship application Anti-Malware is a shareware malware-removal tool. The principle difference between the free and premium version of the application is real-time monitoring. If you don't need active scanning against threats, the free version uses the same database and does an admirable job ferreting out infections. Anti-Malware was, for example, one of the few malware removal tools that could detect and remove the Antivirus XP 2008, a spyware application that masqueraded as an antivirus app. The Anti-Malware installation includes another application from Malwarebytes called FileASSASSIN—a helpful tool for deleting files locked by Windows.

HijackThis (Windows, Freeware)

HijackThis stands alone in this Hive Five as being the least automated yet most likely to completely wreck your system if used incorrectly. HijackThis does a comprehensive scan of the state of your computer and reports back an enormous log file. The tool makes no judgement on whether or not an application, browser modification, or registry entry is malicious or not. It simply generates a list of things that could have been potentially altered or tampered with by spyware, malware, or other malicious programs. Advanced users can look over the log themselves and determine what needs to be pruned. If you're not comfortable doing that, your best bet is to take the log file to a popular security forum like BleepingComputer or SpywareInfoForum and ask their armies of knowledgeable volunteer malware slayers to comb over it for you. Alternately, while not a replacement for receiving expert help from people in the forums, HijackThis.de is a web-based HijackThis log reader which is updated nightly. You upload your log file, it scans the file for relevant entries and gives you links to articles on how to remove the malware found in the log.

Now that you've had a chance to look over the contenders for top malware killer, it's time to cast your vote and see who goes home with the crown. A note about the poll: the option for "Other" is missing from this week's poll. We understand that the best way to get rid of malware is to hit it with multiple tools until the infestation is good and dead, but we'd like you to cast your vote based on the best possible (single) tool for the job, not on the scorched earth policy of using them all. Che ci piaccia o meno, tutti noi, almeno una volta nella nostra vita da geek, dobbiamo avere a che fare con i sempre più utilizzati e sempre più ricchi servizi di hosting gratuito. Collezioni di sfondi per il desktop, programmi (più o meno legali), archivi di documenti e qualsiasi altro tipo di file. Ormai quasi tutto viaggia su siti come RapidShare e MegaUpload e, diciamoci la verità, attendere i fatidici “secondi prima che parta il download” è una vera e propria seccatura.

Una seccatura che, da oggi, grazie alla neonata estensione SkipScreen per Firefox, possiamo aggirare in maniera del tutto automatica. Una vera goduria, senza mezzi termini, per chi non dispone di un account a pagamento su questa tipologia di servizi online.

WebSaver è un salvaschermo che vi mostra una pagina web scelta da voi.

Se per esempio volete monitorare un blog o se volete vedere le notizie del sito di un quotidiano aggiornate in tempo reale, basterà inserire il link desiderato nelle opzioni dello screensaver et voilà: potete impostare un tempo di refresh della pagina, utile se volete che un certo sito venga ricaricato ogni tot per vedere se è cambiato qualcosa.

Un’ultima funzione, forse la più bella di questo programma, è la seguente. Mettiamo che un vostro amico abbia fatto delle bellissime foto e le abbia messe su servizi come Flickr o Picasa, servizi di image hosting che permettono di visualizzare le foto in modalità “slideshow” (se volete un esempio guardate qua): a voi piace tanto vederle in questo modo a tutto, schermo, e le mettereste come screensaver se non fosse che dovete scaricarle una a una e farci una cartella apposita.

Ebbene, se le foto sono tante e non avete voglia/spazio per scaricarle tutte una a una, la soluzione è semplice: basterà infatti inserire nelle opzioni di WebSaver il link dello slideshow, e quello si comporterà esattamente come un normale browser, con la differenza che ne avete fatto uno screensaver!

Time isn’t money. It’s the single greatest constituent of life. The more time you create for yourself, the more time you have to live. Thus, saving time is life saving. If you’ve been feeling a day late and a buck short, you’ve been mismanaging your time… and your life.

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time,

Seek privacy. – “You may be totally different and I can respect that, but I need peace and quiet. I wanted to provide the link to download the fonts but I think it's better if you go to the authors page and download it from there, that way you can check out more stuff from the author and give him the credits deserved.

Juice Drop: trasferire file da Pc/Mac ad iPhone tramite USB

Joice Drop è una nuova applicazione per Pc e Mac sviluppata dal RipDev che consente di copiare file da computer ad iPhone.

Il programma funziona sia su iPhone jailbroken che “originali”. Potete scaricare la versione Windows (Xp/Vista) da qui e quella Mac (OS X) da qui.

Juice Drop non necessita nemmeno di collegamento WiFi, ma soltanto del cavo USB. Una volta collegato l’iPhone al Pc/Mac e lanciata l’applicazione, possiamo trasferire i file sul nostro dispositivo.

Per farlo dobbiamo cliccare sull’icona delle impostazioni (gli ingranaggi) e scegliere il percorso nel quale vogliamo trasferire i file.

Se non impostiamo diversamente, tutti i file vengono copiati in var/mobile/Media/, mentre i file .zip in /Downloads.

Possiamo aggiungere altre esentioni cliccando su (new) e digitando il tipo di file che vogliamo trasferire (ad esempio .doc o .jpg) e il relativo percorso (Downloads va benissimo).

Una volta impostati i tipi di file non dobbiamo far altro che tornare indietro cliccando sulla freccia e trascinare il file sulla goccia di Joice Drop.

Gli utenti Windows, invece, devono cliccare sul tasto “+” in basso a sinistra per aggiungere nuove estensioni e relativo percorso e poi cliccare su “ok” per confermare.

L’unica cosa da ricordare è che se collegate l’iPhone tramite Juice Drop l’iPhone non viene rilevato da iTunes.

Juice Drop è un buon programma molto utile per chi non può o non sa utilizzare l’SSH per copiare i file, anche se iPhone Tunnel è molto più completo.

Se non vi piace ridere, non vi piace commuovervi, non vi piacciono l’ironia, la poesia, i rivoluzionari, gli idealisti, gli anarchici, allora non procuratevi questo libro. Ma se non vi piacciono tutte le cose che vi ho detto, allora non siamo più amici. Io vi avverto.

E’ la storia (pare inventata, ma forse no, ma comunque c’importa una sega) di un attivista sindacale nel Messico degli anni ‘20 del Novecento, un posto avventuroso di suo reso ancora più avventuroso (e vivo) che mai dalla prosa di Paco Ignacio Taibo II. La storia è corale, raccontata dalle persone che questo rivoluzionario anarchico lo hanno conosciuto, dai suoi compagni e da quelli che gli davano la caccia. Ci sono le lettere che spediva e quelle che riceveva, i rapporti di polizia che lo riguardavano. Con la scusa di raccontare una storia, se ne raccontano altre mille. Non c’è una sola parola in più di quelle che servono. E’ uno di quei libri che, se fossi uno scrittore, vorrei aver scritto io, e i libri che si possono fregiare di tale onore (LOAL) possono essere contati sulle dita di una mano (facciamo di due, toh).

Se non lo avesse scritto uno spagnolo cresciuto in Messico, sarebbe un libro Nuovo Epico Italiano. Non sto scherzando, forse, anche se invece è probabile che sì, sto scherzando.

Insomma, leggetevi questo cazzo di libro e non rompete i coglioni. Non ho altro da dire su questa faccenda (cit.).

Logo Instant è un sito che fa né più né meno quel che il nome stesso dice: fornisce loghi disegnati dal team di grafici del sito, pronti per essere scaricati e modificati a piacimento.

Per adesso i loghi a disposizione sono solamente 25 ma sicuramente il loro numero aumenterà presto; ogni logo è fornito in formato adatto ad essere modificato, indicato a fianco dell’immagine: per la maggior parte si tratta di file .psd (Adobe Photoshop Document) su più livelli.

L’utilizzo di un logo non comporta alcun costo, ma volendo si può sostenere Logo Instant con una donazione tramite PayPal. I termini di utilizzo non prevedono restrizioni circa l’uso fintanto che non se ne ricava un profitto.

Gli hard disk hanno al loro interno una serie di piatti, in base al loro numero i costruttori possono confezionare vari modelli con diversi tagli di memoria, ma questa possibilità, per ovvii motivi, è preclusa ai comuni utenti.

Nel mondo delle memorie allo stato solido, dove tutto è possibile, esistono SSD la cui capacità interna può essere ampliata a piacere aggiungendo al loro interno schede di memoria Secure Digital o Compact Flash.

In realtà si tratta di particolari controller RAID con connettore SATA o ATA in grado di pilotare da 2 ad 8 schede di memoria facendole apparire come un unico disco (RAID 0), un mirror (RAID 1) o addirittura un RAID 5.

Quelle acquistabili su geekstuff4u hanno prezzi che variano tra i 164 ed i 233 €.

iPresent IT è un programma per chi usa molto le presentazioni.

iPresent IT sincronizza alla perfezione presentazioni in PDF o PowerPoint o Keynote (non dovreste avere bisogno di altro) con il vostro iPod che abbia uscita video, cioè tutti i modelli a colori.

Fantastico, non dovrete più portarvi dietro il portatile e cercare alimentazione, cavi vari di connessione, configurazioni che non funzionano (esperienze universitarie) ma vi basterà avere iPresent IT con il vostro iPod e, piccola chicca, se avete l’Universal Dock, potrete presentare con il telecomando, stile Keynote :O

Assolutamente da avere, quantomeno provare, iPresent IT funziona sia su Mac che su Windows, lo trovate a questo link.
