To generate this graph, he created a command line script similar to our founding editor's Todo.txt utility, but this script accepts daily health information and writes it to a file. The graph is then generated using that data by running it through GNUplot and added to the screen with GeekTool—a great way to keep motivated to stay healthy.

The rest of the desktop includes a calendar, to-do list, date, moonphase, and even economic indicators—everything that a geek might want to see at a glance—and presented in what must be the geekiest desktop we've ever seen. For those that are curious about all of the details and reasoning behind this desktop, hit the link to check out the full write-up and a full-size screenshot of the desktop in action.

Want to see your own desktop featured here? However, I have received quite a few emails asking me how to create a text made with clouds. Because of that I decided to write a very quick tutorial showing how to do it.

Following our Quick Tips series, in this tutorial I will show you how to create a text with clouds, using brushes and other few interesting light effects.

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop, I used 1920x1200 pixels for the size. Then using the Layer Style apply the Gradient Overlay to the background layer. Use Normal for the Blend Mode, 100% Opacity, Radial for the Style and #07090b and #27160a for the Colors. Also increase the Scale to 115%.

Step 2

With the Horizontal Type Tool (T) type CLOUDS, all caps. I used Helevtica Neue Ultra Light. It's important that you use a very light font because we will concert it to a path. After that go to Layer>Rasterize>Type. That will rasterize the layer, then in the Layer Palette, hold the Command(mac)/Control(pc) key and click on the thumbnail of the layer. That will create a marquee selection from the text.

Step 3

With the marquee selection from the previous step, go to the Path Palette and click on the icon Make Work Path from the Selection (1). Then Save the path so you can use it later on. You can do that by clicking on the icon that is on the top right icon (3) and click Save Path.

Step 4

With Direct Selection Tool (A) let's edit the path. Start deleting the inner part of the paths like, each letter has to have only one path like in the image 2.

Step 5

Let's create a brush that will be used to create the clouds. I have already published a tutorial showing how to make this brush, you can check out at http://abduzeedo.com/beautiful-fluffy-clouds-photoshop-christmas-tutorial . But below you can see what's necessary to create the brush. Go to Window>Brushes. Select a regular and very soft brush. Select the Shape Dynamics, Texture and Other Dynamics. For the Texture is very important that you change the scale every time you change the brush tip scale.

Step 6

Again with the Direct Selection Tool (A), click with the right button of the mouse over the path in the image and select Stroke Path. A dialog box will appear, the stroke path window, where you can select what you will use to stroke the path. Make sure you have the brush we have just created selected and then select Brush. Also make sure that you have the color white selected for the brush color. (1).

We will repeat that 2 more times, but each one in a new layer. The first time we used white, the second let's use black and the third, white again. That will add volume to the clouds and make them more realistic.

Step 7

Let's add create some more clouds, (image 1), then add another layer and go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Make sure you had black and white for the colors. After that change the Blend Mode of this layer to Color Dodge and with the Eraser Tool (E) delete some areas leaving just the ones closer to the clouds text.

Also let's add some light effects. To do that add a folder in the Layer Palette, this folder has to be beneath the clouds we created with the brush tool. Change the Blend Mode of the folder to Color Dodge. Inside this folder add a new layer. Then with the Brush Tool (B) and white for the color, start painting some clouds. These clouds we will be painting will be light effects so if you want you can change the opacity of the brush by clicking on the number keys (1-0). Use the image below for reference.

Step 8

Now just add some stars. To do that create a new layer and fill it with black. Then go to Filter>Noise>Add Noise. Use 10% for the Amount and Gaussian for the Type. After that go to Image>Adjustments>Levels. Increase the Black until you have just a few stars then increase the white to make them brighter. Also change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge.

Step 9

Select all layers and duplicate them, then go to Layer>Merge Layers. After that go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 12 for the amount. Also change the Blend Mode to Screen. That will create a nice glow and make the clouds more realistic.

Conclusion

You can add more light effects like some bigger stars or even play with colors, the idea of this tutorial was to show you a very quick tip on how to create clouds and a text made with clouds. Now it's all about playing and testing different variations.

In fact, Honus improves on the MintyBoost in many ways, foregoing the low-capacity AA batteries for a higher capacity, rechargeable lithium polymer battery and throwing in the solar cell to handle the recharging. This DIY is a bit advanced (soldering lies ahead), but the result is impressive.

How to make a solar iPod/iPhone charger -aka MightyMintyBoost [Instructables]

We've tallied the votes and we're back with the top five contenders for best malware removal tool.

The internet—unfortunately—isn't a never-ending buffet of secure open-source software and Bollywood-style musicals starring LOLCats. There are people and organizations that delight in stealing your personal data, hijacking your computer, and making a general nuisance of themselves through malicious software. This week we're highlighting the top five tools for removing software with ill-intentions from you PC.

Spybot Search & Destroy (Windows, Freeware)

Spybot Search & Destroy has made quite a name for itself over the years, earning accolades from both general and computer-focused publications. Spybot Search & Destroy is the highest ranked freeware tool at 2Spyware.com, a website that ranks malware removal tools. In addition to scanning for malware, Spybot Search & Destroy also has a variety of additional functionality, including a botnet scanner, hosts-file modification (to keep malware from calling home), a secure file shredder, and a dummy code feautre (it replaces malicious or questionable adware modules with inert code so the dependent program will keep functioning). As an added bonus Spybot Search & Destroy is compatible with every version of Windows dating back to Windows 95.

SUPERAntiSpyware (Windows, $30)

SUPERAntiSpyware is available as both a freeware and premium edition like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (see below), but the level of restrictions on the freeware edition are considerably higher. The free version is limited to basic on-demand scanning and malware removal. The premium version includes real-time scanning, registry protection, a scheduling service, auto-scan on startup, and 50 startup diagnostics to stop malware infections before they spread. One of SUPERAntiSpyware's strongest selling points is its high level of compatibility with other protection tools like Avira, Kaspersky, Symantec, and McAfee. In most cases it can be run along side other tools without any conflict.

ComboFix (Windows, Freeware)

ComboFix is just as spartan as the screenshot here makes it look. You download ComboFix, run it, and it takes care of the rest. The basic ComboFix process looks like this: It backs up your registry, checks to see if you have Windows Recovery Console installed, and then it goes to town on your system scanning away through 40+ stages. When it's done, ComboFix spits out a log file and lists all the malware it found, which ones it was able to remove, and which ones you'll have to use your Google-fu to look up how to remove manually. It isn't fancy, but it gets the job done and gives you a detailed report at the end to take to security forums for help if you need it.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Windows, $25)

Malwarebytes' flagship application Anti-Malware is a shareware malware-removal tool. The principle difference between the free and premium version of the application is real-time monitoring. If you don't need active scanning against threats, the free version uses the same database and does an admirable job ferreting out infections. Anti-Malware was, for example, one of the few malware removal tools that could detect and remove the Antivirus XP 2008, a spyware application that masqueraded as an antivirus app. The Anti-Malware installation includes another application from Malwarebytes called FileASSASSIN—a helpful tool for deleting files locked by Windows.

HijackThis (Windows, Freeware)

HijackThis stands alone in this Hive Five as being the least automated yet most likely to completely wreck your system if used incorrectly. HijackThis does a comprehensive scan of the state of your computer and reports back an enormous log file. The tool makes no judgement on whether or not an application, browser modification, or registry entry is malicious or not. It simply generates a list of things that could have been potentially altered or tampered with by spyware, malware, or other malicious programs. Advanced users can look over the log themselves and determine what needs to be pruned. If you're not comfortable doing that, your best bet is to take the log file to a popular security forum like BleepingComputer or SpywareInfoForum and ask their armies of knowledgeable volunteer malware slayers to comb over it for you. Alternately, while not a replacement for receiving expert help from people in the forums, HijackThis.de is a web-based HijackThis log reader which is updated nightly. You upload your log file, it scans the file for relevant entries and gives you links to articles on how to remove the malware found in the log.

Now that you've had a chance to look over the contenders for top malware killer, it's time to cast your vote and see who goes home with the crown. A note about the poll: the option for "Other" is missing from this week's poll. We understand that the best way to get rid of malware is to hit it with multiple tools until the infestation is good and dead, but we'd like you to cast your vote based on the best possible (single) tool for the job, not on the scorched earth policy of using them all. If you have an Other vote for a completely different malware-removal tool, we're happy to hear it in the comments.

Which Malware Removal Tool is Best?(answers)

This week's honorable mention goes to "Reformat" (as in your hard drive) as a last-ditch, foolproof solution to your malware problems. Apparently sometimes when you find a mouse in the kitchen the only way to be sure there aren't any more of them in the walls is to burn the whole house down. Have a malware horror story, a favorite tool, or a prevention tip you want to share? Sound off in the comments below.

“The Codex Seraphinianus is a book written and illustrated by the Italian artist, architect and industrial designer Luigi Serafini during thirty months, from 1976 to 1978. The book is approximately 360 pages long (depending on edition), and appears to be a visual encyclopedia of an unknown world, written in one of its languages, a thus-far undeciphered alphabetic writing.”

Time isn’t money. It’s the single greatest constituent of life. The more time you create for yourself, the more time you have to live. Thus, saving time is life saving. If you’ve been feeling a day late and a buck short, you’ve been mismanaging your time… and your life.

Here are 25 proven time saving tips employed by some of the wisest bloggers I know. Each tip links back to a source article containing additional insight.

Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time,
for that is the stuff life is made of.
- Benjamin Franklin

Seek privacy. – “You may be totally different and I can respect that, but I need peace and quiet. I feel stressed (and inefficient) when the TV is blaring, the dog is barking, the kids are shouting, the cat’s meowing, the phone is ringing, the microwave is beeping, the washer is running, the dryer is spinning, my Blackberry is vibrating, my email is dinging, etc.” – via The Wisdom Journal

Use visual reminders. – “I’ve found it helpful to have visual reminders to do something that’s important to me. One way to do this is writing on a piece of paper what you need to do, and in smaller text why you want to do it. Tape this paper somewhere you will see it: bathroom mirror, in front of your bed, on your keyboard. This doesn’t work if you have many reminders for different tasks, but for a couple of tasks, it can work magically.” – via Think Simple Now

Live by the truth. – You will eventually do “hard time” for lying to yourself and others. “The truth often comes out whether we want it to or not. Lying generally just complicates the situation and makes us look bad. Look at the scandals many of our politicians fall into because they fail to admit the truth. It is much better to just develop the habit of telling the truth even when it is difficult. This will save you a lot of heartache and misery in life.” – via My Super-Charged Life

Develop a passive income stream. – “Passive income refers to income that is generated without any (or very little) additional time on our part. Some time may be put in up front, but the payoff from passive income can last for years. Every dollar you earn in passive income is a dollar you didn’t have to earn by working. In this way, passive income puts you closer to financial independence, a stage of life where you no longer have to sell hours for dollars in order to earn an income.” – via Frugal Dad

Complaining kills time and energy. Stop it! – “By complaining, I was putting the blame on external things instead of myself. By noticing this habit, I’ve been able to lean into my fear and not let it decide my actions. After becoming more aware of my thoughts and emotions, I’ve learned that if I don’t give in to my fears, I could choose actions that may be scary at first, but they would reap greater rewards in the end.” – via Work Happy Now

Trick yourself into waking up early. – Don’t snooze your time away. “A very effective trick I do is to place my alarm on the other side of the room, effectively forcing me to get out of bed to turn it off.”– via The Change Blog

It’s okay… Just say NO! – “While saying yes can take us down some wonderful roads, there’s also a ton of value in saying no. We’re only given a certain amount of hours in our lives; do you really want to give yours away so easily? If you don’t have to time to commit to a new project, complete a favor, or serve on another committee, it’s a good idea to just say no.” – via On Simplicity

Delegate or hire a helping hand. – “What value do you place on your time during your waking hours? Let’s say I had a great idea for a side business and the capital to get it rolling, but I didn’t have the time to get started. I could channel some of that capital into hiring someone to do menial personal tasks, then channel my own time into the side business, seeing if there’s enough meat there to get things to really take off.” – via The Simple Dollar

Use technology to automate tasks. – “Don’t be dumb like me. Make sure your backups are automated so you don’t forget, because you will eventually. For those first 2 years and 3 months, I felt like my website was invincible. But everything goes down eventually. Don’t trust yourself to make regular backups. Leave that to a computer!” – via My Wife Quit Her Job

Stop trying to make things perfect. – “Perfection is an illusion. We strive for perfection because we have an image in our minds of what we should be, but what we are not. Realize that perfection and imperfection are a result of a conflict in your mind, they don’t exist in reality. You have to make mistakes in order to grow, don’t let perfectionism paralyze you. If you’re not failing, chances are you’re not trying hard enough.” – via Illuminated Mind

Research it before you commit lots of time to it. – “When creating an online business, the successful person starts his company after adequate success is certain, whereas he who is destined for bankruptcy first creates a product and then looks to see if it will be profitable.” – via Finance Your Freedom

Haste makes waste. Slow down. – A quicker, hasty pace in the short-term can lead to a more error prone set of results in the long-term. “Sometimes things get in the way, like a sick child or a disastrous house. Those days more than any other, I find the need to just stop, let things go for a little while and focus on being present is absolutely necessary.” – via Remodeling This Life

Keep your priorities straight. – “Assess the balance in your life by creating a pictorial representation of your life. Using a pie chart you can easily see if your priorities in life are being met. Hang it up somewhere that you can see it. How does it look? Does it look the way you want it to?” – via My Dollar Plan

Don’t waste time worrying about the uncontrollable. – “The inevitable… Some things we just can’t control. So, aren’t we better off pushing worry aside? And living our lives. There will be good in our lives. And there will be some bad in our lives. Worrying about any of this is not going to change this fact. What can change these facts are actions, by us.” – via The Jungle of Life

Enjoy yourself. Misery is wasteful. – “Do you ever stop and think… Why am I doing all this stuff? Do you ever feel like your sole purpose in life is crossing things off lists and maintaining your calendar? Maybe if you aren’t enjoying yourself, all your time is wasted. All that time we spend bored, frightened, angry, in a hurry, or unhappy, isn’t that the real waste of time?” – via Steve Olson

Clear clutter from your home and workspace. – “Devote a little of your time to tossing clutter from your life, and keeping things relatively clutter-free, and you’ll be rewarded with much more pleasing living spaces, with a less stressful life, and with better organization and productivity. Clutter weighs us down, distracts us, and brings chaos into our lives.” – via Dumb Little Man

Turn off the TV! – “People don’t incorporate enough engaging leisure and spiritual activities, such as socializing, exercising or reading books, into their day. Despite having more leisure time than ever before, time spent on engaging leisure activities has actually declined over the past four decades. Instead, there’s been a significant increase in the hours devoted to what the authors call “neutral downtime,” which is mostly watching television.” – via Mom Grind

Utilize the power of compounding. – “I’m sure that everyone reading this understands the power of compound interest. When you invest money you earn interest. Then you start earning interest on the money you earned from interest. Over many years this continues to compound and eventually leads to a very large sum of money. The same concept applies to time. If you invest time by working hard when you’re young, you put yourself in a position to succeed that will continue compounding for the rest of your life. If you waste time when you’re young, you can’t make up for it later because you’ve lost the opportunity to utilize the power compounding.” – via Pick The Brain

Read situations and anticipate outcomes. – “I would say that I have gotten better over time at reading situations and anticipating outcomes. This helps me be more effective. I’m still improving; let me give you an example. Recently I gave permission to this construction company to have access to one of our lots to help them access an adjacent lot. Since then, trucks have been wreaking havoc on my lot. I got all pissed off and was telling my friend how disrespectful that was, making a mess of our lot, after I was so cool with them etc… His response was great. He simply said, ‘Dude, what did you expect?’” – via Best Life Practices

Be productive while you wait. – “The moment you have to wait for anything, whip that book out and start reading. Usually you’ll manage quite a few pages while waiting. Use these pockets of time in your day, and you’ll be amazed at how much time you actually have. It’s been said that you can get a whole university education just reading one hour a day for five years. You just have to reclaim those lost minutes.” – via Joyful Days

Put first things first by time boxing your tasks. – “Working on your most important projects first thing in the morning is a classic tip to guarantee that you do meaningful work in your day. Create a time box to work on your dreams every day, before the world out there has a chance to disrupt your plans. Time boxing is simply fixing a time period to work on a task or group of tasks. Instead of working on a task until it’s done, you commit to work on it for a specific amount of time.” via – Litemind

Use the right tools. – “It’s easy to be a better housekeeper when you have the right tools. If your current tools make you work harder or make the task take a long time, consider investing in supplies that will make your life easier. There are many housekeeping tools available such as multipurpose spray cleaners, lightweight vacuums and steam cleaners, and disinfecting wipes that can be used for more than one task and save you time and money.” – via Homemaker Barbi

Add value to everything and everyone around you. – If you aren’t adding value, you are wasting everyone’s time, including your own. “The biggest waste of time and oxygen that you can be is not being a valuable person. Not valuable to yourself, to your family, to society, and to the planet.” – via Alex Shalman

Spend minutes now to save hours later. – “You have to spend a little time now to save a lot of time later. It’s the notion of giving some to get some. This ties into the idea of working smarter not harder. You can save countless hours over the long-term by spending just a few productive minutes now.” – via Marc and Angel Hack Life

FileAid: trasferire i file su iPhone tramite USB

i-FunBox: gestire l’iPhone tramite USB (Aggiornato)

- A niente. Pura curiosità.
- Età?
- Ventisette anni.
- Luogo di nascita?
- Gijon, Asturie, Spagna.
- Celibe.
- Religione?
- Dice sul serio?… Nessuna, è chiaro.
- Ma lei non è anarchico?
- Certo.
- E non è una religione?
- Se vuole metterla così… Religione: anarchico. E’ divertente. Ha un suo fascino.
- Va bene così. Durata del soggiorno in Messico?
- Trenta mesi e cinque giorni.
- Mettiamo autodidatta?
- Metta quello che vuole.
- Aderenti a partiti o a organizzazioni?
- Sì, alla CGT in Messico.
- E in altre parti del mondo?
- E’ ancora da vedere.
- Che legami ha con l’internazionale comunista?
- Nessuno. Ci risiamo?
- Tante grazie.
- Ha procesi in sospeso in Spagna?
- No, nessuno.
- E negli Stati Uniti o a Cuba?
- Secondo chi?
- Secondo me, amico.
- Ah, certo che no. Se mi estradate, offrite voi.
