This is only natural, as the fear of the unknown causes an almost pathological need to create mountains of gear to meet every possible situation and perceived need. When looking upon your vast stores you will find comfort in your preparedness. “Surely nothing will happen that I cannot overcome,” you will think to yourself. Unfortunately every item brought along is another item to keep track of and physically pack along every step of your journey.

By mid-trek you will be eyeing that monstrous stack of gear with trepidation and unease. By the time your journey has reached its end the borderline hate you feel for that gargantuan stack of inanimate objects will be almost personal in nature. “Why did I bring a kitchen sink if there weren’t dishes to do?” you may find yourself shouting at said household item.

The physical and emotional toll excess baggage can take on your travel experience will vary based on how many “extras” have been brought along, but you can guarantee that its worth some planning ahead of time to save on those headaches.

Needs vs. Wants

Before optimizing your travel gear, first you need to simplify it! At home you can take a lot for granted. You can store most of what you want with little concern as to when you will need it. Unfortunately travel is not as user friendly, as each item must be accounted for, stored, carried, and easily accessible. The hassles begin to outweigh the positives pretty quickly.

To begin shrinking down that luggage you need to approach the situation with a mindset focusing on “Needs” versus “Wants”. This will vary from person to person, but you can expect to have the following “needs”.

A minimum clothing count

Important medication

A small reading book

A travel journal

Cash

Travel documents

It’s a bit generic right now, but we will cover some of those in better detail in a while. Wants aren’t so simple to list, instead you will be best served by looking at them from a usage standpoint. “Is this something that I use daily right now? Will I be using it often during my travels?” Many items will fail this simple internal test. We have a tendency to create exaggerated scenarios in our minds to justify packing, but most trips really boil down to the items I listed up above.

Now, for your minimum clothing count I truly do mean a minimum. A common way to pack for three or four day trips is to just factor in “1 outfit per day, +1 extra”. This is good sense if you are visiting family or a common vacation destination, but when hitting more exotic locales you might be much better served by doing some laundry during the trip. Lighter items like underwear and socks are good candidates for duplication, but larger items such as pants or dresses are bulky, heavy, and will take up valuable space for souvenirs. Larger items such as pants and sweaters can often be worn again or repurposed throughout your trip. Pack clothing items that can be mix and matched instead of outfits and your “necessary” clothing items will shrink before your eyes!

Which medications to bring is almost a large enough topic for its own blog entry and really depends on your destination, but for our purposes I am referring to prescription medication! These things must be prioritized and kept track of at all times! Keep them tucked away safe, and within reach in your carry-on baggage.

As for your choice in reading material, I clarify “reading book” up above with “small” because some travelers will bring “one or two books max” per trip, but insist on bringing 1,000 page tomes that weigh almost five pounds each! While a little downtime is to be expected, you will most likely not have the time to focus on such a daunting read. Not only that, but such large books are for escapism, something you should have little need of since you are already on an adventure! Save yourself some packing space, and keep the books small or bring your whole library in a tiny e-reader.

Also, don’t forget cash. ATM fees (if accessible) as well as conversion rates overseas can be rough. Keeping cash on hand gives you flexibility during your journey, and takes a lot of the stress out of the experience by smoothing interaction with locals, and also granting you some reassurance that you are not completely without means in your new “home away from home.”

Lastly don’t forget your travel documents including things like your tickets, reservation information, passports/visas. Keep these documents somewhere easily accessible and secure. These are obviously the biggest necessity for traveling and should be treated with great care.

Ultimately, choosing which gear you find essential can be a daunting task, and every trip will be different, but you will find that a little forethought and planning will go a long way in making your adventure a pleasant experience, maximizing the fun and minimizing the hassle.

From picturesque mountains to the north, and dazzling beaches to the south, Thailand’s geography is almost as diverse as its history, one of the very few countries to ever avoid complete colonization. This national pride plays itself out in a myriad of ways, most notably in the preservation of historical buildings, artifacts, and a culture that is uniquely Thai.

As always our premier tour experience strives to give you both a comfortable experience, and also one that is authentically local. Towards that end we will be starting with the capital and number one tour destination in Southeast Asia: Bangkok.

Bangkok

Home to over 9 million people, Bangkok is a bustling hive of activity, with ancient architecture standing in stark contrast to the gleaming skyscrapers springing forth all over the city. This burst of modernity is all the more astounding when you consider what great lengths the citizens are going through to maintain their proud heritage, and this provides a wonderful opportunity for travelers to learn about nation’s culture and history all while enjoying present day benefits!

The adventure begins with a tour of the waterways that have guided Bangkok’s history for thousands of years. The Thai region of the Mekong River Delta is one of the most fertile agricultural zones in the entire world, allowing the relatively modestly sized country to out-produce many of their larger competitors with relative ease. These rivers crisscross the city, making water travel an entirely viable and rather unique way for traversing the city. An entire culture has sprung up around these boats, called “floating markets.” While these markets are not 100% floating, the predominate form of transport is still aquatic, and many of the merchants and “food carts” pull up into their spot early in the day to go home at the end of the day. At the famous Amphawa Floating Market, one can experience Thai culture face to face, and enjoy a little piece of what it means to live with such a focus on water.

Moving on, to the steps of the Grand Palace, home to the Thai monarchy from 1782 to 1932. While it is not currently a center of government activity, the Grand Palace still plays an important part as more than just a tourist destination or museum, several royal offices are still located within the building, and many ceremonies take place at the Palace each year. Originally made of wood, the Palace was slowly replaced with brick and stone over the course of several decades, creating a very unique look as the Palace was added to and rebuilt several times over the centuries.

Adjacent to the Grand Palace you will find the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This religious icon is a visible symbol of the Thai devotion to Buddhism, and is a true work of art. The statue is adorned with season dependent clothing which is studded with gold and jewels, with values that are virtually incalculable.

Ayutthaya

The ruins of Ayutthaya are the site of the Siamese capital prior to its overthrow by Burmese invaders. This city was once the commercial and cultural crossroads of all of Southeast Asia, playing an important role on the global stage, with many European records describing a dizzying amount of world wealth concentrated into one location. Aside from the ruins, there are several museums to be found, each with their own specialty.

Another stop on our Thai Tour is to the magnificent Summer Palace, also located within the Ayutthaya province. Originally built in 1632, this palace was abandoned after the Burmese invasion, only to be repurposed and rebuilt in the 1800s by the existing Thai monarchy. This complex is a photographer’s dream, with many beautiful examples of Thai construction and history on display, all in a single location!

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the the cultural center of Northern Thailand. For almost 500 years this city was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom before becoming a vassal state to the Kingdom of Siam. Despite this change in power, the city remains an important cornerstone of Thai culture, and is an absolute must-see for anyone adventuring through the country!

Enjoy a walking tour of the city, focusing on not just the ancient teak buildings and pagodas, but also a bustling marketplace tradition that goes back centuries. Between the 1,000 year old buildings, tea parlors, and art galleries the city of Chiang Mai has something for every traveler!

Of course, what is a Thai adventure without elephants? During your adventure you may have the opportunity to take part in an elephant encounter, where you get to see first hand the importance these giant animals play in Thai culture. Indeed, the national animal of Thailand is the elephant!

Using Chiang Mai as your center of travel, you will want to seek out the historic gold coated Temple of Doi Suthep. Further demonstrating their love for the elephant, this temple is dedicated to the White Elephant, a religious relic dated back to the Kingdom of Lanna. An added note: The temple itself is beautiful, and completely plated in gold, but don’t forget to set your back to the building and gaze down the mountain towards the city of Chiang Mai. The view will completely take your breath away, and is a perfect photo opportunity.

Your time adventuring in Northern Thailand might find you at the Hill Tribe Village of Long-Neck Karen. The Long-Neck Tribe are actually refugees from neighboring Burma, allowed to set up a village in Thailand until the conflict is over and it is safe to go home. The Karen people are a tribe known for the placement of ritualistic coils of bronze wire around the necks of the women to help give the appearance of a long slender neck, which is found most desirable in their culture! The Karen people are also well known for the weaving, with many colorful textiles for sale. While not a Thai culture, it is still a part of their history, as the conflict between the two countries has been central to much of the rebuilding done throughout history in Thailand.

Koh Samui

Far to the south of Bangkok, Koh Samui is to an island located in the well protected Gulf of Thailand. Tropical Koh Samui, those luxurious pristine white beaches and perfect climate alone are worth the trip, and with a plethora of adventures to be had, it truly sets itself apart as a world travel destination!

As Thailand’s second largest island, Koh Samui boasts a surprising amount of activities aside from just relaxing at the beach, not that there is anything wrong with a little bit of rest and relaxation! Jungle-shrouded waterfalls, exotic day and night markets, and boat trips to nearby islands all serve to flesh out the experience, and truly allow a person to tailor this stop to their own needs and desires. Speaking of nearby islands, a short skip away is the Big Buddha temple, accurately named for the 39 foot golden Buddha erected on the island in 1972!

Of course where there are beaches there are also water-based activities, so if trekking through the jungles and examining ancient Buddhist temples is wearing you down look no further than the ocean to provide! One such location is the Grandpa and Grandma Rocks, a unique rock formation right on the water’s edge, and well known for its beautiful opportunities for photography!

Whether shopping through Nathon Town or swimming in the Gulf Thailand, Koh Samui will never disappoint you, and is the perfect end to this premier travel opportunity!

As the adventure draws to a close you will briefly bounce back to Bangkok for your goodbyes and departures. As you rise through the clouds above this jewel of the Southeast, reflect back upon all you experienced, and hopefully come visit again someday! The beauty of exploring a new culture is that there is always more to discover, more to experience, and more to cherish!

China has been increasingly in the eye of the international traveler. From the discovery and refurbishment of the Terracotta Army, to the trend-setting and world famous Beijing Olympics; China has been putting on display just what they have to offer the world, and tourists have responded, with over 50 million visitors in 2014. Not one to rest on laurels, China has pushed ahead, engineering a modern marvel in the Three Gorges Dam. Hitting all the high points in just two weeks can be daunting, but Ritz Tours has carefully crafted an experience that lets you hit all the high points, while still leaving time to enjoy the little moments in China! Still considering your next big adventure to China? So won’t you explore with us and learn all about some of the locations you might visit on a Ritz Premiere Luxury Tour.

Beijing

East Asia has long been known for its exquisite wooden architecture, and you’ll find no better representative of the style than China’s Forbidden City. This palace will take your breath away at first glance, and then increasingly bring forward new moments of awe. Of course, not ones to let a simply amazing edifice remain amazing on its own, the Forbidden City also houses a truly massive art museum, which is one of the most visited museums in the world! To be honest, the Forbidden City, like so many places in this article, truly deserves its own blog spot. Humanity offers up wonders like this so rarely, and it’s our duty to treasure and preserve them as much as possible.

Of course, a stop in Beijing wouldn’t be complete without visits to the Temple of Heaven or Summer Palace or….wow, there is too much for a single entry. Ok, for brevity’s sake, we’ll have to agree that we’ll get back to the individual locations, and at least make an attempt at getting through the whole list of destinations our Premier package offers in a timely manner.

Of course you’ll see many historical locations, but one thing our group is known for is our excellent Hutong tours! “Where is Hutong?” you may find yourself asking….but it’s not so much a “where” as it is a “what.” A Hutong is a self-contained neighborhood, typified by an alley that runs east to west and is bounded by historical homes that often contain a courtyard. So far every location we’ve mentioned has been the domain of the ancient aristocrats, but it’s in Beijing’s Hutongs where you will truly begin to find the beating pulse of China. These neighborhoods and their markets are where the common people work and live, giving you a rare opportunity to dip your toes into China’s culture and hopefully take home more than just photos, but also an appreciation for a culture steeped in a millennia of history largely outside of European influence.

Oh yeah, and you’ll see The Great Wall. I mean, it’s over 3000 miles long, so you won’t be seeing the whole thing, but there is something truly humbling about standing on stones that have guarded a nation for thousands of years. Not to be blasé about the whole thing, but if we have any hope of reaching the end we must carry on!

Yangtze River Cruise

One wonders if Chinese emperors were in competition with Mother Nature, because while the Great Wall is longer than most countries, the Yangtze stretches nearly 4,000 miles, making it the third longest river in the world, and the longest in Asia. A cruise down the Yangtze begins in Chongquing, also known as “The Fog City” and will meander down the river to Shanghai. In the bamboo forests around Chonquing you will have an opportunity to visit the Great Pandas in their natural habitat! These endangered giants are closely protected by the Chinese, not only due to cultural importance, but also as a truly unique evolutionary side-track: a bear that is strictly vegetarian. They are content to browse the forest the entirety of their lives, consuming up to 30 pounds of bamboo a day.

Where did we leave off? Oh yes, Chonquing. So, after the pandas, but much, much before Shanghai you will visit the amazing Qutang, Wu, and Xiling Gorges. The old saying might be “Save the best for last,” but that’s not the case here. China’s Qutang gorge is widely hailed as a must-see destination. While it is by far the smallest of The Three Gorges, Qutang packs a lot of photo opportunities into a very small distance, with spectacular vistas around nearly every bend in its eight miles of sinuous travel. While the Wu and Xiling gorges are also quite beautiful, there is downtime, and space between each location. You’ll find yourself kicking back and watching the countryside go by, a relaxing look into the cornerstone of Chinese civilization. The Yangtze is to China as the Nile is to Egypt, and you cannot visit either one without getting an overpowering sense of its history. Take a moment, and enjoy. We make frequent reference to a travel journal on this blog, and your journey down the Yangtze is the perfect time to make a few entries!

Aside from the natural beauty to be found, there are of course more wonderful examples of traditional Chinese wooden architecture along the way! Made without a single nail, the marvelous Shibaozhai Temple stands crimson and gold upon a hill to the north of the river. Since the dam was created the Temple is just a bit more isolated, with a new bridge added to help you reach this historic destination. Aside from absorbing the beauty of this pagoda, the legend has it that a person gains more luck for every story they climb.

Three Gorges Dam

“Modern marvel” just doesn’t do this project justice. At a cost of over $20 billion, the Three Gorges Dam paid back its own operating cost by 2013, almost seven years ahead of schedule. This system of locks and turbines is a masterpiece, saving the country an indirect cost of almost 30 million tons of coal a year. While the idea originated back in the 1940s, it would be over 50 years before the project actually broke ground, and completely set the standard with what the world could expect from hydroelectric power.

Xian and the Terracotta Warriors

Xian isn’t as well-known as other cities like Beijing or Shanghai, but it is no less important! The originator of the Silk Road, Xian is where East truly began to meet West! Where would European culture be without the rich merchant princes of Italy? Why without the Xian and the Silk Road we would have no Da Vinci, no Italian Renaissance! China might be home to a different culture, but it is truly astounding to meet, face-to-face, with legend. The world has been interconnected for a very long time now, and no better example exists than Xian!

From Medieval age pagodas and walls to the Terracotta Warriors, your time will be quite full, we promise. Speaking of those warriors….created over 2,000 years ago, this army of clay warriors guards the afterlife of noted Ming Dynasty Emperor Qin Shi Huang and is far and away one of the most exciting archaeological discoveries of the last century. An entire army of horses, weapons, and personalized soldiers all rendered beautifully in terracotta and supplied with appropriate weaponry.

This discovery has influenced our culture from history and the sciences to video game and movies. Standing in its presence you can almost feel the echoes of the past reaching forward to make you respect the present. Take your travel journal. Pack your camera. The Terracotta Army is a true world wonder.

Shanghai

Once referred to “The Paris of the East,” Shanghai is home to a lovely side-by-side comparison of both modern and ancient architecture. Here you may have the chance to see a Chinese Acrobatics show or also enjoy a tour of the City God Temple of Shanghai. Commemorating the three gods of Shanghai, this temple abuts a marketplace renowned for its snacks and kiosks. A perfect souvenir opportunity, this location has survived occupation by both the Japanese during World War 2, and the British during the colonial period.

You end your journey with a wonderful dinner, and many fond farewell from friends old and new, the only regret you will have from this entire experience is that it must end!

When the word “luxury” is mentioned your mind will automatically snap to one word – “money.” It’s that negative reflexive action we’ve covered before, and like so many times before overcoming that initial negative thought is so very worth it. Luxury is more than just money, more than expense. A luxury tour maximizes your dollar, smoothing out your journey, providing you with a few perks from home, and will actually allow you to really dig and enjoy an experience! In short, you will trade breadth, for depth.

Maximizing Your Dollar

While there is a lot to be said for doing things the “hard” way, the truth is that a little bit of effort in the luxury department will go a long ways. For starters, you will literally have more energy for the things you enjoy. There is something to be said for fighting through a crowd in search of a tour bus, or scheduling your own intermediate travel, but after a while, after you have satisfied the desire for “real” authentic, you will realize that there is a lot of freedom that comes from having someone else – a professional – do this for you instead. Not only will they get better deals, but they will free up your mind to focus on other pursuits, like haggling in the local market, practicing a foreign language, or recording thoughts in your travel journal. Not to mention the effect is has on your time management. Less stress spent over rooms or transfers will allow you to stop and soak in the ambiance, a chance to really get your finger on the pulse of your new locale.

Familiarity Breeds Appreciation!

The mind and body adapt readily to international travel. No matter how different the geography or culture, you will subconsciously begin to accept your surroundings as “the new normal.”

Traveling on a luxury tour allows you to maintain your level of comfort while still fully immersing yourself in the experience. Now, the key here is to achieve balance, you want enough comforts of home to provide some relief, but not so many that you miss out on an authentic experience. A little western style dining, some air conditioning, and a car to ride in are not necessities, but they will give you a little slice of the comforts of home while still being able to pivot and enjoy a completely different culture and landscape.

Immersion

Every city and country, have their own “must have” travel destinations. Places that anybody who has visited the country absolutely insist you must have seen if you had truly experienced the country. The Great Wall of China springs to mind, its only one of the most known structures ever, but while these sites are internationally known, a country is much more than these moments of greatness. There is so much to a culture, to a society, that goes on aside from the well-known monuments. An entry level travel group will often take you to the “hot spots” and nothing more. A quality travel company will make sure you hit all of the internationally known tourist destinations. But a luxury tour? Now that is a special feeling. Luxury tours give you an opportunity to get off the beaten path and experience a culture first-hand, without being stuck amongst an army of other tourists all chasing the same photo opportunity. You experience different cities, see different sights, and in the absence of competing tourists get a chance to really interact with the local culture.

A luxury experience will deliver you to your destination in comfort, with enough energy to enjoy the experience, enough comfort to rest in-between adventures, and enough cultural exposure that you can easily say “I loved my trip, and I wouldn’t change a thing!” Visit Ritz Premier to learn about the luxury options we have in store for you.

It’s simple human nature to prepare for the worst, we are creatures of habit and when venturing beyond our norm, our instincts kick into overdrive. Items we previously haven’t thought about in months are now of tantamount importance, and every day “comfort” items move into the realms of needs rather than wants. This urge is totally normal, trust us. We’ve seen it all and a comprehensive list would be no doubt amusing…but, there are still a few items that are repeat visitors to this list, things that really should be left at home.

#1 – Items that are Expensive, Irreplaceable, or Both

Society tells us to put our best foot forward when meeting new people, but trying to dazzle your fellow travelers and the locals with your family’s most prized possessions is a good way to lose said items. Beyond possible theft, the simple act of transporting items through so much unfamiliar territory greatly increases its chance of being lost. Simply put, if you can’t afford to replace it, or cannot replace it, then don’t bring it along. Small items that are easily dropped or misplaced can be a nightmare when you have an itinerary to adhere to. Your travel guides will do all in their power to help you, but if something rolls into a busy street or gets left behind in a hotel it can become a challenge to recover.

#2 – Excess Credit Cards and Personal Information

It is hard to go shopping in the United States these days without ending up with a store card. Even if it’s just something that accrues points or gives coupons, it seems every business has their own proprietary credit card. And of course, each and every one generates yet another item to fit into your purse or wallet. These cards might grant you big savings at home, but in another country they are a liability. Not only are these cards just another opportunity for possible identify theft if lost, but they are clutter that is completely avoidable. Save the headache, and leave those store cards at home.

You should also leave behind your Social Security cards, university ID’s, or any other “nonessential” forms of paperwork.

All you will need is your choice credit card, your driver’s license, health insurance cards, any other essential documentation, and your passport.

#3 – Appliances and Electronics

Pack your most essential small appliances and electronics because there is nothing worse than keeping track of a suitcase loaded with fragile and expensive items. Always pack your medically necessary appliances (e.g. CPAP machine), and ensure that you have the correct plugs for proper functioning at your destination. Then think hard about the other appliances or electronics that you honestly use daily. Your laptop might be useful during the flight to your destination, but you will likely end up regretting having to lug it around with you everywhere after you arrive. Try to find multi-use electronics that work for you, such as a smart phone or small tablet, and load them up with all your entertainment needs before departing.

Keep in mind that hair dryers, irons and coffeemakers are not necessarily provided in your room in another country so check with the hotel before you leave on your trip to ensure that you can make other arrangements.

#4 – Audio Speakers

With the advent of better wireless headphone technology this has become less of a problem recently, but still there are those brave souls who feel it is their solemn duty to make sure everybody within a twenty yard radius knows exactly what music is in vogue. While we applaud their devotion to the arts, it will go a long way to making friends with your fellow travelers and any locals if you keep your music between the earpieces of a headset, and not blasted across the town.

#5 – A Second Suitcase

Ah, the second suitcase. This is a large first-time mistake, so if you take nothing else away from this article, make it this one. Packing along a second suitcase feels like a good idea at first glance, the positives seem so many, right? You can bring more gear, your pack won’t be so full, and you’ll have room for bulky souvenirs! Sadly, you will find that the negatives quickly outweigh those apparent positives. For example, while the simple math of “two hands + two bags = good to go!” doesn’t actually hold up very well. It’s difficult to juggle paperwork, a wallet, or even a doorway when your hands are stuffed with bags. You will quickly find yourself dependent on your fellow travelers for assistance at every turn as you try to perform three-point-turns just trying to maneuver around a building, let alone keep up with the group. Also, you will find yourself bumping into people and just trying to keep out of the way.

Oh, and its tiring. So very tiring.

So there you have it, a quick guide on the things you think you will need in your adventures, but are probably better off at home!

Arrange Documents Early

You’ve had your passport for a few years, and the most difficult part is remembering where you keep it between trips- now you have to manage documents for your kids as well. Your children will have passport and visa requirements for international travel too. Remember that the application and approval process can take months, so make sure you’re on top of your deadlines when you’ve got a trip planned.

Check Airline Guidelines Before You Go

Double-check your airline’s policies on checked bags, strollers and car seats when you book your flight. Nobody likes surprises or extra charges at the gate, and finding out you might have to wait at baggage claim for the car seat that you hope made it onto the correct plane can add extra worry on top of an already stressful situation.

Leave for the Airport Early

Depending on the guidelines provided by your airport, you should be there an hour or more before your scheduled departure time, and even earlier if you need to go through customs. Life-proof your departure by aiming to leave for the airport earlier than the guidelines say you must. Being able to take the couple minutes to return home for the absolutely essential left-behind teddy bear can give you peace of mind, and can make the difference between having a calm child and one who is inconsolable all vacation long.

Involve and Inform Your Kids

Children are naturally curious. If you’re at the airport with plenty of time to spare, let them help you out. If they’re of an age to read, let them find your gate on the departures board, or give them the responsibility of looking for it as you walk through the terminal. They’ll appreciate the attention and feeling useful, and you’ll get to have a few “teachable moments” along the way. Likewise, if your kids are old enough, explain the process of the security screening as it happens.

Use Early Boarding

Many airlines allow families with small children to board their flights early. Take advantage of this, and get your family settled in their seats ahead of time. Early boarding also lets you check in with the flight crew if they have any special instructions for your flight. Making friends with the crew is also a good tactic for long-haul flights. While they can’t babysit your child, a little kindness goes a long way when you need an extra apple juice after the drink cart has passed by.

Activities and Surprises to Make Time Fly

Pack a bag full of storybooks, snacks, coloring books, and special, non-messy interactive treats for during the flight. Make sure that this is saved for once you’re in the air, and dole out the fun a little bit at a time. You’ll be a hero to your kids- and the people sitting around you. Likewise, pre-load a phone or tablet with games and episodes of favorite cartoons. Alternate that with more hands-on things like coloring, to make the time pass faster.

Be Prepared for Turbulence

…and not just the kind that’s caused by air. Flying can be scary and confusing for even the most well-behaved of kids, and pain points can be literal. Help soothe popping ears by showing them how to yawn or chew gum to relieve the pressure from elevation changes. Use the tried-and-true stroll up and down the aisle if restless little legs start thumping the seat back in front of them. Travel can be tiring for a child, even when your five year old normally has the energy of ten kids. Prep a playlist of lullabies or songs from their favorite cartoons on your phone or mp3 player, and break it out when the going gets rough.

From how you pack your gear, to how you choose your shoes, there is a plethora of information available specific for each of your travel destinations! Use these hacks to keep you from looking the part of the tourist on your next adventure!

Giant Bag = Giant Tourist

You are no doubt used to picking brand new outfits and sparkling clean clothes out each day. This is a convenience of the home, but an inconvenience on the road! Clothing is bulky and heavy, forcing you to carry twice as much weight as you might with better chosen apparel. Do yourself a favor, and do some laundry in the sink, or even send out for it if you will be in the same hotel for a couple days. It sounds so simple, but many people fail to heed this advice and end up with twice as much baggage as more seasoned travelers.

Should you be unable to find a laundry service, or your hotel doesn’t offer one, laundry by sink is a tried and true travel hack, one usable on almost any adventure!

Soak your clothing in warm, soapy water. If there is persistent road dirt, rub the cloth back and forth against itself to scrub the debris free.

Rinse your clothing out with warm water until you stop getting suds.

Wring out the cloth by twisting until water stops coming to the surface.

Hang the clothing out to dry!

With this method it’s possible to take as little as two outfits out for any length of adventure- though I would strongly recommend taking more than two unless you are up to a minimalist challenge.

Sensible Shoes

Footwear is one place you must work hard to get right. At home you have the luxury of being able to store an infinite number of shoes, boots, and sandals, but out on the road the reality is much different. Shoes are incredibly heavy, and frequently very specific (dress shoes, work shoes, walking shoes, etc.). You want to avoid specificity and try to find a great all-purpose pair of hiking or walking shoes that are extremely comfortable. While it’s possible to make adjustments on the road, nothing is worse than a fresh set of blisters during travel. Many companies make durable shoes that are perfectly suited for your needs! Look for a light-weight shoe with a solid insole (or add your own custom insole), and mesh so that they breathe in humidity. While selecting your travel shoes, try to buy grey or tan/brown shoes. Nothing marks a person as a tourist faster than a set of blazing white sneakers. It is like the international symbol for “upsell me!”

Multi-Use Items

One of the best ways to reduce on the amount of stuff you take on your journey is to use “combo” items, or things that you can get multiple uses out of. For example, one of the latest travel trends is a pair of khaki pants with multi-pockets that can also zip off into shorts. The flexibility such an item gives you is refreshing, removing the stress of trying to find exactly the right outfit for the day.

Another place to save on weight and clutter is on your choice of outerwear. When choosing a jacket you will want one with zipper-pockets, at least one interior pocket, wind/rain resistant, and large enough you can fit over other layers in the event of a cold day. It’s a big plus if the sleeves can zip off to make a vest for dealing with temperature swings throughout your journey.

Carrying Cash

Another common mistake is for a person to keep all of their cash in one large roll of bills. This means that every time you have a transaction you will be running the risk of dropping/losing all of your local currency.

Carry a small amount of cash in an easy to reach place and always store the bulk of your cash in a small hidden wallet or money belt against your body, not in your back pocket, or in a bag that is easy to lose track of. Only access this reserve cash when you are in a private or secure location.

This list is by no means comprehensive, but by following the tips outlined above you will improve your overall experience by traveling smarter! Your luggage will be of a more manageable size, your clothing will always be fresh, and your cash will be safe and secure.

The Right Clothing

While not a part of your essential day pack, you are wearing your clothing daily, so being mindful about the clothes you wear during your travels is the first step in ensuring a fantastically planned travel experience.

Perhaps the most important portion of this entire article is the next two words:

Sensible. Footwear.

Seriously folks, your wallet, body, and travel companions will thank you for following this tip. First time travelers will often pack along shoes for every occasion. Dress shoes, hiking shoes, walking sneakers, sandals, flats….the list goes on. Shoes are bulky, heavy, and can easily be reduced down to a single pair. Generally speaking, for your day-long wearing shoe, you will be looking for a good hiking shoe in a neutral tone like tan or grey, lightweight, with a quality in-sole.

Socks are just as important as your shoes. Pack good quality socks that have at least been washed once before travel, and pack enough that you are not reusing them. Socks take a beating each day and don’t take up much room in your suitcase. You will be glad to put on a fresh, clean pair every morning!

Another source of frustration is outer-wear. You can really narrow down your travel weight by finding a quality light-weight jacket that is rain/wind proof and with interior pockets. Bonus points if your newfound cover also has sleeves that zip off to create a vest and a built-in hood.

The main idea here is to eliminate two major sources of stress: heavy baggage and wasted space. By focusing on items that are both light-weight, and with multiple functionalities you kill both birds with one stone!

First Aid Kit

A small pack in your day bag should be set aside to act as your “first aid kit.” You can purchase an off-the-shelf-kit if you would like, or make your own using stuff you likely already have in your home. You may not have quick access to the medications you need while in another country due to reasons like businesses being closed on Sundays or being off the beaten path and far away from the local pharmacy.

Now before we go any further: Always consult with your doctor before taking over the counter medications. The following list is a generic starting point for somebody who wants to stream-line their travel experience, and should be custom tailored to fit your own situation! Don’t forget to pack all of your necessary prescription medications as directed by your doctor.

Bandages – You will get the most use out of adhesive fabric bandages. They tend to stick longer and breathe better.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) – Great for headaches or reducing fevers!

Naproxen (Aleve) – Good for arthritis or other joint pain.

Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) – An antihistamine, this will help fight allergic responses, but be careful, because it will make you sleepy!

Foot powder – Foot health is imperative when trekking around the globe! If you have a chosen brand, then stick with it, however for a generic entry level price it’s hard to go wrong with your standard product like Gold Bond foot powder.

Alcohol wipes – Useful for sanitizing anything in a pinch, though you should try to save them for small cuts.

Antacids – Sometimes food doesn’t agree with you, especially in new locales. Use these little babies to straighten your tummy out in a hurry.

Imodium – If antacids don’t do the trick and your upset stomach is transforming into an upset GI this medicine is crucial.

Pre-cut Moleskine pads – Useful for padding sore spots. If you feel a “hot spot” on your feet immediately put the moleskin in place…don’t wait for it to become a blister.

Hand sanitizing wipes – Pack more than you think you will need…you WILL end up using them.

Random Essentials

Of course there are some not-so-known items that everybody should be packing around in their day bag!

Plastic Resealable Bags – These can be useful for storing damp clothing, keeping papers dry during inclement weather, or for packing along a snack during a short hike. Much like around the house, the uses for plastic bags are nearly endless, and as an added bonus, they are almost weight free and take up next to no room! We’ve found we use mostly quart-sized bags, but be sure to pack a few gallon-sized too.

Collapsible water bottle – Yet another item on the list that takes up no room, the collapsible water bottle gives you the opportunity to refuel on the go as needed. Hydration is important no matter what the weather, so always be prepared!

Extra Device Battery – Our electronics are essential to the modern travel experience. Don’t let yourself be caught without your phone when the perfect opportunity for a selfie arises. These rechargeable external batteries come in all shapes and sizes to fit all travel needs.

Money Belt – A money belt or other wallet that keeps your valuables secure is essential, don’t leave your hotel room without it!

Scarf or Shawl – For men and women, find a scarf or shawl (pashminas are perfect) that you can pack along with you, these are handy if it gets chilly (indoors or outdoors) or if you want to cover up for modesty. Ask your tour guide for guidance if you’re unsure if your attire is appropriate for visiting a religious site.

Snacks – You will be burning a lot more calories than normal while traveling the world. Don’t forget to pack an extra granola bar, crackers, candy bar or two to ensure that you have enough energy to make it through a long day of sightseeing.

Being prepared for the day by dressing reasonably and packing a well thought out day bag will help relieve some travel stress and allow you to immerse yourself fully in the experience of your surroundings.
2016 has ended, and we’re ringing in the New Year here at Ritz Tours. In this time for reflection and change, we’re making a few resolutions to travel differently, travel happier, and travel more adventurously. Here’s a few 2017 New Year’s resolutions for you to try out.

Travel Alone

“Traveling solo does not always mean you’re alone. Most often, you meet marvelous people along the way and make connections that last a lifetime.” – Jacqueline Boone

Traveling alone can give you much needed perspective on the world. It’s a way to learn who you are in a new place, without any influence from your peers. Take these chances to forge new connections, make new friends, and maybe learn about a different side of yourself. Traveling alone can also give you a better chance to relax and engage in some introspection. By not being on anyone else’s timetable, you’ll find that you don’t have the you’ve become accustomed to in the mornings, or can take five more minutes to simply take in a breathtaking sight.

Travel With Family

“Two of the greatest gifts we can give our children are roots and wings.” — Hodding Carter

On the flip side of the above, traveling with family, while it does present a new set of challenges, is also incredibly rewarding. Travel gives infinite chances for teachable moments for kids, chances for reconnecting with siblings, and opportunities to make memories with your parents now that you’re grown up. Experiencing a new culture together with the rest of your clan can bring you all closer together and give you stories to recount for years and years to come.

Pick A New Destination

While it can be tempting to revisit a familiar favorite, 2017 is the perfect year to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Ritz Tours has added three brand new tours to new and exciting destinations in 2017. Try a tour around Germany, exploring historic castles and beautiful modern cities. Perhaps Peru calls you, with lush forests, sweeping mountain landscapes and ancient temples. Or visit Russia, and experience hundreds of years of tradition and a breathtaking cultural legacy.

Write More

While it’s tempting to simply add a Snapchat filter to everything and call it modern-day scrapbooking, we’re resolved to use our journals more and our phones less. By putting pen to paper at the end of each day, or even scribbling down our impressions in the moment, we want to tell our stories in rich words and descriptions to accompany the photos we’re snapping.

Try the Food

It can be tempting to stick to comfortable, familiar dishes when you’re in uncertain surroundings. We want to go off the beaten path, and visit unique experiences only available locally. Pick up food from a street vendor, ask a local for a recommendation to a restaurant, or just walk down a street, and let your nose guide you to a culinary adventure.

We hope these resolutions give you something to think about as you’re celebrating the new year. Are you making any resolutions of your own? Let us know in the comments.

What do you get the traveler that seems to have everything managed? We’ve put together a handful of last-minute ideas to help save your sanity this holiday season.

Socks

“One can never have enough socks,” said Dumbledore. “Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.”

While they may seem like the most boring thing to stuff in a stocking or dress up with a ribbon, a good, comfortable pair of socks can be the difference between comfort or misery day after day. The right socks can keep toes warm in frigid climates, prevent blisters when you’re spending 13 hours a day exploring a new locale, and pull moisture and odors away from your feet to keep you smelling and feeling fresh. Compression socks can also be a truly helpful gift on super long-haul flights, helping to keep circulation going as you’re sitting for hours.

Our pick: Smartwool Travel Socks.

Waterproof Pouches or Cases

When your recipient is the type that puts the “adventure” in “adventure travel” with gusto, take a look at getting them a waterproof pouch or case. These handy items will protect phones, cameras, documents and other valuables in case of sudden involuntary submersion. They’ll be able to rock the boat without fear of an expensive replacement. Waterproof containers are available online or through your favorite sporting goods retailer.

Journals or Notebooks

For many people, chronicling their daily adventures is a routine habit. If they’ve just been using plain paper this whole time, help them step up their game with a nicer notebook. We like moleskine, but there are many brands out there. For people taking longer journeys, the Hobonichi Techo, originally conceived by Shigesato Itoi of video game development fame, is a day by day “life book,” that provides amazing use inspiration on their website.

Foodie “Survival Kit”

Eating in restaurants in unfamiliar places can be an adventure all on its own. Save your giftee from bland airport food and bad meals with a mobile foodie survival kit- Uncommon Goods sells one, or you can make and label your own at home using stackable containers sold by craft stores. Either way, add in your foodie’s favorite spices, and they’ll be good to go.

USB Battery Pack

Travelers tend to bring a lot of gadgets along the way. From cameras to phones, we’re constantly recording, commenting, and connecting with the world around us in different ways. Help your traveler keep the signal going with a USB battery pack. These are available in many capacities and configurations for charging different devices, so you’re sure to find one to suit your giftee’s needs.

We hope you’ve found something on this list to help make your traveler’s holiday merry and bright. Of course, you can always give the gift of travel itself, either to someone you love, or yourself. Visit the Ritz Tours website or call 888.345.7489 to learn more about booking the adventure of a lifetime this holiday season.
