Organization Tracks Theft Of Tribal Art And Antiquities

We're constantly amazed by the volume of Native American art and antiquities that are stolen from galleries and private homes each year.

The frightening thing about it is that these items frequently find their way into the secondary market, and are purchased by unsuspecting buyers.

Enter the Antique Tribal Art Dealer's Association (ATADA) which provides an extensive list, and images, of items stolen from galleries and private collections.

We can only say, "Buyer Beware" when you think about purchasing a great piece from someone that you do not know. Make sure that you have a written description and as much provenance as possible on a any piece that you purchase. And check the ATADA website frequently to see "what's hot."

River Trading Post Features Extensive New Hopi Kachina Database by Marek Plasota. The Most Important Kachina Resource In The Past 50 Years.

Researcher/Author Marek Plasota has just released the most important resource for kachina doll collectors and scholars that has been published in over 50 years. It is called the "Hopi Kachinas eKatalog"

The nicely packaged database is in a CD format that works exceptionally well on either a Windows or MAC based platform.

Plasota's database describes 413 Hopi kachinas with more than 2500 color photographs. It describes each kachina, the ceremonies in which a kachina participates, and comparisons of similar appearing kachinas.

The database may be sorted by the Hopi or the Anglo name of the kachinas.

eKatalog also cross-references the important works of Harold S. Coultin, Barton Wright, Oscar T. Branson, Eric Bromburg and Cliff Bahnimtewa.

This extensive work is a must for people studying Hopi culture, or for people that collect kachina dolls, and is available at each of our River Trading Post galleries, as well as on our website.

Caroline Carpio Special Commission Sculpture On Display At River Trading Post Scottsdale

The Heard Museum Guild has commissioned Isleta Pueblo sculptor and artist, Caroline Carpio, to create a Painted Pony as a part of its fund raising effort on behalf of the Guild's American Indian Student Art Endowment Fund.

Carpio's piece, Spirit of the Seasons, pays tribute to her son's medicine horse.
Known for her unique sculpture and pottery, Caroline Carpio pays tribute to her son's Medicine Hat horse and "honors all horses for the resilience of their spirit with nature and for the splendor of their sacred connection with our ancestors and with all mankind. As a Pueblo Native and potter, the inspiration for the designs that I chose...are those that depict the natural forces the horse has to endure: the sun, moon, wind, rain and snow." (See Image Attached)

The Heard Museum Guild is selling 1500 tickets, for $100, for a Painted Pony drawing that will be held at the Heard Market.
River Trading Post Plans Move To New Scottsdale Home

River Trading Post, Scottsdale, will celebrate our fifth year in Scottsdale by moving a block south and about two blocks west into the heart of the Scottsdale arts district early in the fall.

The architects are architecting and the builders will be building, soon we hope, in the Gateway at Main Street Plaza.

The new digs in Scottsdale will enclose our vibrant collections with an old tin ceiling and an oak floor, and plenty of rooms for roaming, including a special new working area for our artists in residence.

Folks who have become at home in our old house on 1st Avenue will find our new home to be even more comfortable, warm and welcoming. And, of course, our ever present Arbuckles' cowboy coffee will continue to be a mainstay, as usual.
American Indian College Fund Provides Education, Hope and Promise for Native American Students

In 1968, the Navajo Nation created a first-of-its-kind educational institution - a college controlled by the tribe, located on the reservation and established specifically to provide higher education to tribal members. With that monumental event, the tribal college movement was born. Since then, the number of tribal colleges and universities has grown to 32, located in 11 states and serving more than 250 American Indian Nations from every geographic region in the United States.

The American Indian College Fund's mission is to raise scholarship funds for American Indian students at qualified tribal colleges and universities and to generate broad awareness of those institutions and the Fund itself. The organization also raises money and resources for other needs at the schools, including capital projects, operations, endowments or program initiatives, and it will conduct fund raising and related activities for Board-directed initiatives.

River Trading Post has worked with the American Indian College Fund for over five years by offering our collectors a range of beautiful Pendleton blankets created especially for the American Indian College Fund, as well as an assortment of wonderful greeting cards created by the AICF.

The newest blanket offered by the AICF is entitled "Birch Bark."

According to legend, the great spirit Koluscap gave the birch tree and birch bark to the Passamaquoddy to help his people. The Passamaquoddy decorated birch bark by etching double curve, floral, and geometric motifs to represent plants, waves on water and other shapes of nature.

See this blanket today on our website.

Reviews and Ratings of River Trading Post, Scottsdale, by New York Times.

Frommer's Review
If you are interesting in getting into collecting Native American art or artifacts, this is a good place to get in the ground floor. Quality is high and prices are relatively low. Not only are there high-quality Navajo rugs, but there are also museum-quality pieces of ancient Southwestern pottery.

New Carpio Bronze Shown At RTP Scottsdale

Isleta sculptor Caroline Carpio's newest bronze sculpture, "Creators Blessing" is now on display at River Trading Post, Scottsdale. It also is included with Caroline's work on the River Trading Post website.
"Creators Blessing" is in reverence to life.

The giver of life is embodied in the female and seeds of the corn, and the male depiction is represented in the step pattern which symbolizes the clouds calling on the rain to make the harvest fertile.
The spirals signify the continuance of our journey.

Historic Germantown Weaving On Display At River Trading Post, Santa Fe

After Kit Carson purged Canyon de Chelly of Navajo People, and slaughtered most of the sheep heard, wool became a very scarce commodity. The Churro sheep were nearly wiped out.
Many of the best weavers were introduced to commercial Germantown yarns by the Indian Traders. (The Germantown yarn was produced in Germantown, Pa.)
By 1880 many top weavers were almost exclusively using the yarn from Germantown to create vibrant, colorful weavings that held strong appeal to the anglo buyer.
A stunning example of Germantown weaving at its finest currently is on display at the River Trading Post Santa Fe gallery. The weaving dates back to 1880, and the weaving is exceptionally fine. More details about this classic also are available on the River Trading Post website.

Kwakiutl Mask Dolls Featured In River Trading Post Native Americana Collection

The Kwakiutl people of the Canadian Northwest Coast are known for the beautiful ceremonial masks used in a complex series of dances.
Masks are a very important part of activities because they gave life to various mythological, bird and animal figures that could give special privileges and powers to a family.
In 1987, Kwakiutl carver W. "Long John" Smith created a series of Mask dolls that was recently acquired by River Trading Post. The amazing miniatures are carved from cedar and each has a fully articulated mask.
"Chief's" Top Hat Included in RTP Native Americana Collection. New jewelry and baskets added to the website.

During our travels down to the San Xavier Del Bac Mission and Tohono O'odham country, we found a wonderful old top hat high upon a dusty shelf. The brim is decorated in beads that signify the four seasons, and the four directions. The top hat was used for very important occasions, indeed.
We've also added a number of vintage and antique jewelry pieces and great old Hopi baskets to the site for you to enjoy.

Collectors of classic old plains bead work will love this piece. The double saddle blanket dates back to about 1890, and is in absolutely magnificent condition. While Plains bareback riders generally used simple leather blankets, the beaded blanket like this one was used for parades and for formal ceremonies.

Broken Nose False Face Mask An Iroquois Legacy

In Iroquois society, dreamsharing was a communal activiity. The primary communal expressions of Iroquois dreamwork were the activities of the False Face Society.
The False Face Society was a select group of Iroquois who wore masks in order to invoke the spirits and befriend them.
The False Face Society is the best known of many medicinal societies among the Iroquois. The society is best known for its dramatic wooden masks, the "false faces." The masks are used in healing rituals which invoke spirits and a dream world. Those cured by the society become members. Also, echoing the significance of dreams to the Iroquois, anyone who dreams that they should be a member of the society may join.
One such mask (unblessed) is included in the Native Americana Collection of River Trading Post. Although it has not been blessed, it nonetheless holds great meaning to the Iroquois people.
Now, we do not purchase items that were created by living artists, but we will take those items on consignment. River Trading Post also is not interested in things like dream catchers, arrowheads, or other crude or imitation artifacts.

What we do look for is great old beadwork and quillwork, old Navajo weavings, old jewelry, kachina dolls and baskets.
The Best Indian Jewelry Site On The Web????

That's what we've been told. The best selection of high quality Indian Jewelry, at the best prices on the internet.

That surprised us, because there are some fine websites out there. But jewelry has become one of the most popular spots on our River Trading Post website with a nice blend of antique and contemporary jewelry.

As we always say, we aren't a jewelry store. Never will be. But we are proud of our jewelry collection. River Trading Post never will be a jewelry store because we hand pick each piece that we add to our collection. And that takes time. That's why our collection usually gets smaller faster than it gets bigger.

Frommer's Arizona 2006 Highlights River Trading Post, Scottsdale

Frommer's Review

"If you are interesting in getting into collecting Native American art or artifacts, this is a good place to get in the ground floor. Quality is high and prices are relatively low. Not only are there high-quality Navajo rugs, but there are also museum-quality pieces of ancient Southwestern pottery."
