Magic was found with bandage and bloody paw

In Miami, the homeless cat crisis is a heartbreaking reality that many of us in the community have witnessed firsthand. On this National Giving Tuesday, we're calling on you to join us in making a difference.

Just recently, we rescued a little black kitten we named Magic. He is dehydrated and has an injured paw, and it was a homeless person who first found him and tried to help by putting on a makeshift gauze bandage. Thanks to his kindness and alerting us, we were able to step in and rescue Magic, but he still needs X-rays and further care. An estimate of the bill from Dec 2, 2024 is below.

This November, we took in a white cat who was found alone after his owner passed away. Tragically, he suddenly fell ill, and we rushed him to the vet. No doubt the sudden loss of his guardian, being in a strange new environment is stressful for Bobo. His diagnostics are at least another $900. The bills just keep avalanching.

Every month, we also support low-income residents and senior citizens who selflessly feed community cats. Many of these individuals have no family and are all alone, but they find joy in spending time with and caring for these cats. We help by covering the cost of cat food, ensuring these kind souls have enough money to feed themselves too.

These are recent events apart from our daily care of the Riverfront community cats. We lead by example. Education is vital and that we do for free, guiding other residents on how to care for rescued cats and kittens. It takes a village. But rescue work takes exorbitant time and monies. Veterinary costs have skyrocketed. It really takes a village.

Are Churu Treats Healthy?

Churu (often spelled as "Churu") is a popular cat treat brand, particularly known for its Inaba Churu line. Let's look at the pros and cons of Churu as a treat for cats:

Creepy Spiders & Cats

Halloween is approaching and fake cobwebs and spiders are everywhere. It made us realize we never see large creepy spiders in our downtown neighborhood. We wonder do venomous spiders exist in Miami and are cats immune to spider bites? Are they pals in the dark of night? Much like spooky Halloween themes depict?

Turns out cats are sensitive to certain spider bites compared to humans, primarily due to their smaller size and different physiology. However, it's important to note that not all spider bites are equally dangerous to cats. Let's break this down:

General sensitivity: Cats are generally more sensitive to spider venom due to their smaller body mass. A dose of venom that might cause mild symptoms in a human could potentially be more serious for a cat.

Spiders of particular concern:

a) Black Widow (Latrodectus species):

Black widow bites can be very dangerous to cats.
Their venom affects the nervous system and can cause severe pain, muscle rigidity, and paralysis.
Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, and seizures.

b) Brown Recluse (Loxosceles species):

These bites can cause necrotic lesions in cats, similar to humans.
The venom can lead to tissue death around the bite area.
Systemic effects can include fever, lethargy, and in severe cases, kidney failure.
Mostly found in Midwest states of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas

c) Hobo Spider (Eratigena agrestis):

While less studied in cats, hobo spider bites can potentially cause necrotic lesions.
However, the danger of hobo spiders is debated among experts.

d) Sydney Funnel-web Spider (Atrax robustus):

Recognized as the world’s deadliest spider, this Australia spider is black and grows up to five centimeters long.
Funnel-web spiders have a glossy, lightly-haired body.
Their bite is deadly for both humans and animals, killing within an hour. The tinier the spider, the more venomous it is.

Factors affecting severity:

The size and age of the cat
The amount of venom injected
The location of the bite
How quickly treatment is sought

Important notes:

Many spiders, even those considered dangerous, will not always envenomate (inject venom) when they bite.
Most common house spiders are not significantly dangerous to cats.
Cats are natural predators and may be more likely to encounter spiders while hunting or playing.

If you suspect your cat has been bitten by a spider, especially if you observe any unusual symptoms or behaviors, it's crucial to seek veterinary care immediately. Quick treatment can significantly improve outcomes in cases of dangerous spider bites.

Remember, prevention is key. Keeping your home free of spider webs and sealing entry points can help reduce the risk of encounters between your cat and potentially dangerous spiders.

Tangerine Has FIP But We Can Still Save Him

His ears look as if they were chomped to their tattered deformed edges. One ear almost gone the other missing pieces like a jigsaw puzzle. Whatever happened? We will never know. Like many street cats trying to survive the rough outdoors with no general care other than feedings, this orange cat was rescued from the stables at the Calder Race Track (Miami) in March 2022 after it closed. To make matters worse, his guardian feeder was killed in a tragic accident. This is when a dedicated animal volunteer, Sharlene, learned about the strays that lived there and offered to help. She came upon this orange cat who had deformed ears but clearly hungry. She quickly gained his trust and feeding schedule. Then suddenly he had difficulty walking. He walked clumsily across a sewer and had runny mucus from the nose and mouth. Sharlene sprang into action, determined to save this cat.

Despite his rough condition, after cleaning him up, his fur a perky orange color, and his eyes with a spark of hope, pleading to this kind stranger, she named him Tangerine. Thus began the journey of nurturing and medical visits. Please click here for the full story.

Despite his permanent runny nose, and URI (Upper Respiratory Infection), Tangerine, like the gallant male kitty, seemed to accept it all as part of life and never complained. Rather he was content in his new home, a roof, soft bed, regular food, a friendly feline and canine sibling and the best mom in the world. Yes, life was good for Tangerine. Our hearts were full of joy but cautious optimism.

That optimism met its unknown deadline a year later. Sadly, it appears in a complication from treating a seizure he has developed neuro dry FIP (feline infectious peritonitis).

FIP is a deadly illness and in the past cats never survived. However, recent advances in the science of cat health and medical issues have introduced a new treatment. But like any fatal disease, new treatments, are very costly and arduous. The treatment plan requires 84 days of daily injections. The good news is that a good Samaritan with experience, comes over daily to do the injections. The bad news, the cost for medication is $2,000.

But our favorite Tangerine is such a warrior despite the swelling for now up to 50 injections. It's a delicate balance with his other health issues. He's fighting to live, and we are determined to make his dream a reality.

World Kindness Day--Please Consider Riverfront Cats

Fellow pet lovers, since the pandemic, Florida is facing tremendous migration of residents with higher incomes from northern cities, while locals face higher cost of living and rent increasing by 40-50%. At the same time, we have never witnessed so many evictions and locals losing their home; forced to go live elsewhere where they cannot bring their pets. Tragically many are left behind in the streets when shelters are full. The daily stories we learn about will leave you heartbroken and sometimes speechless.

The rate of homeless pets has not slowed down. Quite the opposite. The war continues in South Florida to rescue them, treat them, and find homes. This year has been the worst.

In addition, we continue to provide pet food for low- or no-income volunteers who are dedicated in managing the cat colonies (community cats are part of the eco system much like opossums). See our post regarding Little Havana by clicking here.

Here are just a few of the stray or abandoned kitties we helped in addition to buying cat food for other volunteers in the community who want to help look after the cats.

Helping our Neighbors in Little Havana

While we continue to care for our Riverfront Cats, we have our eyes and ears open for cases nearby where we can make a difference. Right next door to downtown Miami is Little Havana.

This humble neighborhood is home not only to Cuban and Central American families, but also home to scores of stray roosters, chickens, and cats. Believe it or not they coexist! Why? Well because they are all fed daily by a local volunteer. With a regular food source, the cats have no desire to chase the chickens like prey. If anything, the roosters attack the cats! Truly! Why? Well because the roosters prefer cat food to rice and grains. haha!

Christine works in the area and meets a local woman, named Tamara, who feeds not only the cats and chickens and roosters but also the pigeons and squirrels daily. Tamara is their guardian angel.

As informed residents we know the sad reality of what may happen. One day Tamara shared some sad stories of a local resident poisoning the cats. Christine explained the importance of having the cats spayed and neutered to stop reproducing and therefore stop the suffering.

FACT: Half of all stray kittens suffer and die before age 8 weeks

Tamara, like many local residents, has little to no income for these extra costs. So we sounded the alarm for volunteers to trap the cats and take them to an animal clinic for spaying and neutering, especially the kittens once they were old enough.

Feeding so many (over 20+) is another big cost. So, we readily donated bags of food and cans of high-quality cat food and kitten food.

We want to continue to help Tamara with this major feat. She is the only person who feeds the 20+ cats and 50+ roosters/chickens and baby chicks, spanning several blocks. She currently is unemployed.

It really takes a village, everyone contributing what they can: cat food, time to feed, fundraising, taking cats to vet clinic...

A Poetic Plea for Help for Tangerine, the orange cat

Tangerine

Under the steely frame of an old trailer, in the quietude of a horse barn, where the sun's rays filtered through the cracks, there existed an orange cat (later named Tangerine). His fur, once vibrant, now bore the scars of countless days spent beneath the forsaken trailer. For years, he had navigated the narrow space between rusted wheels and forgotten dreams.

Then one day the bustling trailer of workers was emptied, with news of permanent closure of the racetrack. Tangerine clung to the edges of existence. He watched as his fellow cats vanished, ensnared in a mass trapping operation. The world outside shifted, and the trailer's fate hung in the balance. Demolition loomed like a specter, threatening to erase the last vestiges of warmth and safety.

Yet fate, in its enigmatic dance, left Tangerine behind with several other cats. Perhaps it was his quiet demeanor or the way he blended into the shadows. Regardless, he remained—a silent witness to abandonment and loss.

But Jose, a man with calloused hands and a heart as wide as the open sky tended to the cats, even after the stable's demise. Every night, he slipped through the gates, a beacon of compassion in the moonlight.

But life, ever unpredictable, snatched Jose away. A tragic accident silenced his footsteps. Upon hearing the news, a local dedicated animal volunteer, Sharlene, became the keeper of the flame. She fed the lone cat, hoping to find others left behind. Soon Tangerine and his (possible) siblings learned to crawl under the fence, over an open sewer drain. Each day, they inched closer to their new feeding schedule, their hunger mingling with grief.

And so, under the green fence, they gathered. Tangerine, the quiet but brave soul, led the way. His paws danced with anticipation as Sharlene approached, a silent promise passing between them. They would survive this together.

Relentless in its tests, life threw a cruel twist. Last month's cold front left Tangerine sneezy, a delicate tremor in his frame. Sharlene watched, helpless, as he stumbled, unable to maintain balance. She knew she had to act swiftly.

We come before you, as humble advocates for Tangerine's survival. His rough, sad life has etched lines upon his face, but hope still flickers in those fervent eyes. We don't know the battles he's fought, the frostbitten nights he's endured. Yet, we can change his story.

This fundraiser is our lifeline. With your help, we can lift Tangerine from the shadows, cradle him in warmth, and heal his fragile body. Perhaps, in a new space—a sun-dappled windowsill or a cozy hearth—he will find solace. No more rusty trailers, no more hunger gnawing at his insides.

So, let us weave a different ending. Let Tangerine's tale be one of resilience, compassion, and second chances. Donate, share, and spread the word. For every dollar given, we inch closer to a miracle—a life reclaimed, a heart rekindled.

UPDATE Feb 23, 2024: Tangerine has taken a turn for the worse. He was diagnosed with FIP. A new fundraiser is in effect.

We Lost a Legend--Romeo

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of the sweetest cat at the Riverfront colony who got along with all the other cats.

Romeo had developed dental disease (a sign when the tongue starts to stick out) and the infection coupled with his FIV caused him to lose weight, discolor his coat and slowly deteriorate. Thanks to a kind resident, she offered to provide hospice care for his remaining weeks. He was estimated to be about 13 to 14 years old. Not bad for an outdoor cat with FIV. (Feline AIDS).

Romeo was loved by everyone who met him. Especially the security guards of the neighboring condos who interacted with him daily. He was a cool cat, laid back and loved to rub on your legs. He often would meow just to say hello, wanting affection, not food. He was a true gentlecat.

Romeo we fed you and cared you for the past 12 years. Your meows and tender looks and affectionate ways are missed by everyone who met you. You were such a joy and taught us so much about the essence of community cats. Now you are over the rainbow bridge with your great love Aurora, and the other Riverfront cats who have passed on Lion King, Cosette, Fanny, Sinbad, Mama, Gabriel, Sabrina, Muki, Scotty, Missy, Master & Zeke. We know you are together running freely, having a grand time. As you should.

You were the heart of the Riverfront community. The Riverfront will never be the same.

Never Did I Imagine I Would be a Pioneer

When someone would ask, "where do you see yourself 10 years from now," in my "younger" years, normally in a job interview I had a prepared statement. Something along the lines of a position utilizing my degree... I now say I have no idea. In this fast-paced digital life where everything changes and evolves yearly even monthly, it is impossible to answer that question. It is my hope to be doing what I love most.

In April 2009 I moved from south downtown (Brickell area) to a new building in north downtown, within a neglected neighborhood--empty gravel lots, old, dilapidated buildings and many stray cats. Never in my life did I live in a neighborhood with stray cats. I thought they only existed in other countries. How wrong I was. That led me to do some homework and seek answers to my burning questions about how to help these stray cats that looked hungry and sad. Thus, the more I learned, the more hands-on I became in helping these helpless creatures.

So I started learning how to care for these stray cats and kittens and find homes for the friendly ones. But there were so many. A few volunteers across South Florida would never put a dent in the estimated half a million homeless pets. Education was key to get others informed and involved. So I started blogging to share what I was learning with hopes of motivating residents to take action in their neighborhood. This was in 2009.

First I never realized there were other cat bloggers. And some who had been blogging consistently for over a year. I wasn't alone! We shared our knowledge and love for cats through our blogging.

At a pet blogging conference in May 2012, the keynote speaker was Betsy Saul, founder of Petfinder.com. She shared the history and progress of our nation in helping stray and unwanted dogs. But the world was sorely behind in science when it came to stray cats. The population of stray and feral cats was only rising at epidemic proportions. That is the greatest need.

She went on about how to start a movement. The room was so quiet, Betsy had us spellbound.

When she asked the question how many blogs were dedicated to feral and community cats, out of an entire conference room of 200 attendees, only two people raised their hands. Ironically those two individuals raised their hands from the "newbie" table. The two bloggers were Peter Wolf of Voxfelina.com and me. Certainly there were others in the country right?

It was not until after the conference that I met a veterinarian at my regular job and she brought her dog on a tour that I was guiding. I was excited to talk to her about pet care especially cats. When she asked me how long I had been blogging, she turned to me in amazement and said, "Do you realize you're a pioneer ?" I stood dumbfounded. I studied in college and held a Master's degree in business. Never in my dreams did I picture myself a trailblazer in a field not related to my academic studies.

To learn that my hard work, blood, sweat and tears was paving the way was one of the greatest discoveries and joys of my life.

I had joined the ranks of cat bloggers like Bonnie Koenig, Ingrid King, Deb Barnes, Debbie Glovatsky, Tamar Arslanian, and Caren Gittleman to name a few.

Sweet Romeo Needs Your Love and Help

Romeo, always with tongue out

One of the sweetest cats in our colony is no doubt a black cat named Romeo. Always gentle. Ready to greet you. And no he is not expecting food. If anything, he is disappointed if you serve food before spending quality time bonding with him, petting him. He is a true gentlecat. Manners and affection come first. He is loved by all, the volunteers that feed him, the security staff, guests, visitors, and passerbys.

Romeo as well other Riverfront Cats are now turning 11 years old. Visibly Romeo is showing signs of illness and pain. His beautiful black cat has turned red. We knew the time would come when they start to age and reach this sad stage of deterioration.

As you can see Romeo is skinny. We can feel the spinal cord. With other healthy cats this is not visible. Also his shiny black coat has dulled and turned red, a sign of deficiency. While his tongue tip sticking out makes him even cuter, the drooling concerns us. Normally this is a sign of oral difficulty. Upon feeding him dry food, he winces and waits for the moist food.

At the vet for his examination, one could see the back teeth were in horrible condition and would need to be extracted. Romeo also has FIV, thus making it harder to fight any infection. We obtained an estimate for dental extractions. Below is a copy of the estimate.

Judge Listens to Pet Advocates in Animal Cruelty Cat Hoarding Hearing (Cheryn Smilen)

An entire year and half has gone by since Cheryn Smilen was arrested in March 2018, the self proclaimed cat rescuer who shockingly turned out to be a hoarder. Over 30 cats were starved to death in an efficiency in North Miami with no air condition, food or water in over 30 days. The discovery was so shocking that both the lead investigator at Miami Dade Animal Services and police detective declared it the worst case of animal cruelty in Miami. An entire animal/pet advocate community was devastated. One of their own was not a rescuer but an evil monster. The news spread instantly, in a digital second. A Facebook page was created to track the case. (Warning some pictures are graphic!).

In the first hearing, Smilen was released on bond. Cat rescuers who knew and interacted with Smilen patiently waited for the wheels of justice. Behind the scenes, prosecutors and defense attorneys do a dance. Communications back and forth to get a sense of what the other wants. Deals are often made to prevent court trials and from sending offenders to prison, due to lack of prisons. Extensive probation time, we learned, is the norm.

Our founder and President, Christine Michaels was asked to join the core group in leading efforts to maintain visibility of the case. The group met with the prosecutor to learn about the law and proceedings and alerted the pet community of updates. Prosecutor Schwartz promised to advise us of when a next hearing would occur.

On August 28, 2019, a hearing was requested by Smilen's attorney to ask for "downward departure". In layman's terms it means that the defense attorney wanted to ask for probation for Smilen claiming she suffered from depression and anxiety. Prior to the hearing behind the scenes, the prosecutor offered 15 year probation, no jail time. (This was before our group met with Prosecutor Schwartz and urged to go to trial). The attorney for Smilen, considered it too excessive. The prosecutor essentially offered "take it or leave it". There would be no other deal. The defense chose not to take the deal and to take their chance on minimal probation. We awaited the hearing date.

In a hearing, the judge may allow the public to speak. Thankfully Judge Millian did allow residents to speak as long as they maintained courtroom decorum. Christine was asked to speak on behalf of cat and animal advocates.

In a passionate and well prepared speech, Christine stood before the judge and introduced herself and the group and carefully alerted him who was following this case and why.

I represent not only my fellow animal advocates here in this courtroom, and Miami but all over. Your honor an entire nation is watching this particular case.

As volunteers that are in the trenches of pet rescue, we come across and see and hear about animal and pet cruelty cases, but the police repeatedly tell us over and over and over again, '"there is not enough evidence to arrest". In the case of Cheryn Smilen there is overwhelming evidence...."

She continued to share some details of the gruesome discovery. Her conclusion was for a maximum punishment. (Technically it would be 30 years considering the guidelines that Smilen does not have prior record. It is doubtful she will get that much if convicted, but one can only hope a jury will convict and the judge will seek a punishment that fits the crime within the law).

Other speakers included Yatir the organizer, who personally interacted with Smilen and offered insight that the defendant had a team of supporters around her that offered to help Smilen feed and care for the cats. That Smilen's actions were deliberate. Michael Rosenberg also spoke and let the judge know there would have been 200 supporters in the courtroom if there was space. The tiny courtroom only allowed for 20 outside observers. Detective Judy Webb spoke last and stunned the courtroom with almost an entire recount of the horrific conditions.

The judge listened intently. When the five speakers were finished, the judge asked the prosecutors for their recommendation of sentencing. They offered 365 days plus many years of probation. Now this may see insignificant to us animal advocates, but we learned going to trial is a gamble. Smilen could get less jail time. We urged the prosecutor to go for it. We wanted to take that risk.

Holding back tears at the detective's observation, advocates clutched each other's hands just as families do when the judge is about to announce the fate of a killer and took a deep breath. When the judge ruling came he rejected the defense's motion. A huge sigh was released. (No clapping or signs are permitted in courtrooms).

Prosecutors Kathleen Hoague and Helen Page Schwartz asked the judge to sentence Smilen, if convicted, to at least 364 days in jail, followed by probation and forbidding her from working with animals. By his ruling, Milian signaled even that possible sentence was too low. Miami Herald article

The case now goes to trial. Exactly what we wanted. A case this horrific, a new low in Miami should not be swept under the rug with probation in our opinion in understanding the law. The trial date was set for December the 9th. A tiny step forward.

After the hearing, local media that was covering the event inside the courtroom , came outside to interview organizers.

We await the trial date. In the meantime, we hope Miami Dade follows the example of another county in Florida, Brevard county in taking swift action in addressing and arresting those who commit animal cruelty.

Tiny Tigger Fights for His Life

Hello pet supporters,

Here is our latest rescue--Tiny Tigger. Our volunteer Sabrina was feeding the mama cat and other community cats in rough neighborhood (Overtown). Unfortunately she was told by reps of the building she can not enter private property to feed. No time to explain the gravity of situation, she took in the mama cat and all her seven kittens.

The smallest, Tigger, next day was crashing and turned ice cold. Sabrina rushed him to local vet (VCA) and was told it looks grim but were able to give him glucose (levels were very low) and revive him. Sabrina took Tigger home and monitored him the entire night and day, keeping him warm, bottle feeding her every 2 hours but unfortunately he started to crash again. This time Sabrina rushed him to MVS the 24 hour pet hospital. The vet instructed that Tigger is delicate and needs to stay overnight a few nights.

The current bill is $650 and expected to increase to double that amount.

Sugar Bear Tabby with Bad Eye Saved from Streets, Needs a Home

Hello cat lovers,

Here is our latest rescue. His name is simply Tabby. Why? Well because he is part of outdoor colony that was fed nightly by resident volunteers in downtown Miami. They noticed his bad eye and took him in to vet for treatment.

This is no ordinary cat!

This sugar bear has a bad case of conjunctivitis and eye inflammation. The good news- with daily drops it is stabilized. Therefore he can not return to the streets.

While many outdoor cats have difficulty adjusting to indoors or would experience great stress at visiting a vet, not this Tabby! Amazingly he is mellow through it all. Enjoying the clean soft blanket, the regular food, the soothing voices and lots of affection. Oh does he love affection. The videos and photos are proof.

So we are on a mission to find him a home. Tabby is middle aged about 5-6 years old. Neutered. Fully vaccinated. He tested positive for FIV, and negative for FeLV. Parasite-free. Tabby is also excellent with other dogs and cats.

FIV (Feline Aids) is not a death warrant. Cats with FIV can live with other cats safely. He has some minor dental issues, but no long term health issues. He needs a proper indoor home to monitor his eye issues and keep him healthy.

Still purring after the vet. Amazing!

This is great pet for adoption. With middle age cats you already know their personality. He's mellow yellow. A "sugar bear" as evident in all the photos and videos. Welcomes sleeping with his guardian. Gets along with everyone and every pet.

A followup visit after one week.

At Riverfront Cats, not only do we lead by example in feeding and managing a cat colony and educate residents about TNRM (Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage), but we have rescued many cats over the years that were born nearby and found their way or were dumped here. Volunteers and residents have also rescued other cats in the Miami area. It's all about teamwork.

We have faced many sad cases in trying to help and rescue lost or injured cat. It's part of the effort. Then there are the stories of rescued cats that reached their "happily-ever-after" ending. Oh we cling to those stories for dear life. To give us the energy to keep going; to uplift us after our hearts shatter in pieces from a cat not making it. Yes rescuers and homeless pet supporters all need a good dose of happy news, happy stories.

It's National Feral Cat Day! Which means our community cats (feral, semi-feral and friendly cats) will all receive extra love and attention, and petting and their favorite food and treats.

At Riverfront Cats, we lead by example in caring for community cats. While we can't trap or foster every stray cat in Miami, our goal is to educate others who come upon a stray cat or kitten, what they can do to help the cat and their neighborhood. As more residents are educated the better chance we have to educate politicians and keep building a movement towards reversing homeless pets.

This year we missed a bullet when Hurricane Irma shifted west of Miami and we were impacted by the outer bands. Thankfully all our cats were unaffected. The silver lining in this chaotic time was gaining an understanding about assessing and preparing for a hurricane. Our last post, addresses the question, "Is It Better to Bring In or Leave Colony Cats Outdoors During a Hurricane?".

We continue to manage our colony with great care, ensuring they are in decent health and have shelter from regular rain and cold. Above, Sabrina is pictured taking a nap on the upper bunk.

However some of our cats, at least two, are showing signs of illness. They are now nine years old. Also, with the regular rain and now the addition of roosters, chickens, opossums and raccoons, more food is needed to feed the growing brood. It's a mini jungle here in downtown Miami! Plus the shelters must be replaced every 5-6 months. It's the same as caring for any family, any home.

Sadly many pets were dumped by owners before the hurricane, that some of our volunteers are caring for them.

It's always the same individuals, the ones who have the least, that give the most. But unfortunately funds are not limitless. It's time for us to come together.

Is It Better to Bring In or Leave Colony Cats Outdoors During a Hurricane?

Miami has just survived the wrath of Hurricane Irma that reached us two days ago.

Needless to say it was stressful from the preparations, to holding our breath as Irma struck land, unleashing her fury as she skirted Miami, and her agonizing slow withdrawal.

In the end we are grateful that our families, pets and the Miami Riverfront cats all survived unscathed!

As we finish cleanup efforts and slowly return to normalcy, upon reflecting on recent events many questions were asked of volunteers and small rescue groups that care for homeless cats.

"Why didn't you trap the cats, cage them and evacuate?"

Every situation is different depending on the type of cat (feral or friendly), and the resources of the volunteer/caretaker in terms of reliability of shelter, space, funds and supplies and distance to non hurricane state.

Regarding feral cats, per Alley Cat Allies:

...for truly feral cats, their best chance of survival is using their own instincts and abilities to respond to changing circumstances. Like wildlife, feral cats will instinctively seek higher ground during floods.

With regard to friendly cats, it depends on the friendliness of the cat and its known comfort level with indoor environment. This is key. Colony feeders may have friendly relations with some cats where they can pet them and pick them up. However, this does not necessarily mean that a friendly cat will remain friendly indoors. Cats dislike change in environment. Some outdoor cats may experience high stress levels indoors not only from new surroundings but from being caged for days. This may be more stressful for the cat than a hurricane.

At Riverfront Cats, one beautiful all black male cat is named Romeo. He is a Romeo. He seeks attention and affection from caretakers before eating. He enjoys petting and tolerates being picked up. However, Romeo also suffers from seizures when in a carrier. We learned this on two occasions. First when he was trapped for TNR. But also years later when placed in a carrier and taken to vet when he showed signs of illness. While exiting the vet office, he had seizures and was rushed back inside to the vet. Thankfully he has not become ill again. With the news of Hurricane Irma, we knew he had to remain outdoors. Days in a carrier would more likely kill him than the hurricane. We trusted his instincts to survive. He also knows to meow for help or attention as he once appeared lost or stuck in his part-time refuge--the storm drainage on our condo lot. Thankfully it is shallow that he was able to jump out on his own.

In a category 4 or 5 hurricane, it is likely that an average house will lose a roof, parts of the home or entire home. The roof is usually the first to go. That is why they are called "catastrophic" storms. One has to expect the worst to prepare for it. In this case, bringing in colony cats and caging them for days is not wise. There is also guaranteed loss of electricity. Unless there is a concrete shelter with no to minimal windows and a generator for emergency power source, and solid roof, as difficult as it may sound, it may be best to leave the cat outdoor.

Evacuating Can Sometimes Be More Dangerous
As native Floridian having lived through various storms and hurricanes, and learning from other hurricane related events around the country, sometimes evacuation poses more danger.

In Miami we were fortunate that the hurricane shifted, taking Miami outside the cone, and we were only impacted by outer bands. Still powerful with gusts of winds as high as 90mph but nowhere near the strength of a Category 3 or 4 at 130mph. The Riverfront Cats have weathered many tropical storms. So when Irma moved, we were very confident the Riverfront Cats were going to survive.

"Do you know where an outdoor cat seeks shelter during a regular storm?"

Most of us do not. We know they have their hiding places during a major storm. Therefore one has to think like a cat, not human and trust their instincts.

These decisions are a struggle for caretakers. There are many factors to consider and weigh. Colony cat caretakers should never be judged. Outsiders can offer funds or resources or other options. But never judge.

Lesson in Socializing Feral Cats

As a cat rescuer and one who has worked with all ranges of feral kittens and cats, I was reminded of an important lesson recently, not all cats are the same when socializing them. Going from strictly outdoors to indoors does not always work. Transition is key.

Living in the city and as witness to the dangers, risks and tragedies for cats to live or have access to the outdoors, we encourage cat owners to keep their cats strictly indoors if possible. Along the same lines, when we bring in a feral cat or kitten, socializing is key so the cat has a chance of getting adopted. However, socializing a feral cat strictly indoors does not always work. Often times, life is not perfect and we have to follow their cues.

One day while jogging by my supermarket I saw a small black kitten. I immediately raced home and drove back with my catmobile. (Ok it's just a regular car with my cat rescue supplies in the trunk). I set the trap and went inside the supermarket to do my grocery shopping. Upon checking the trap after my grocery purchase, inside was a stunning, all white older kitten, a teenager, most likely 9-10 months old.

Well, I thought she's still young where there is a chance to socialize her so I decided to keep her indoors and not release her. Next day she was spayed and I kept her in my master shower (like a large closet) to recuperate. The master shower is also known as the cat intake room. It's a lovely shower with glass wall and door so I can see through to observe their behavior, temperament, sleeping pattern, and energy levels. Plenty of room to move around and have a large litter box.

But after several days of tasty cat food, cat milk, water, luxurious soft bedding inside the carrier, me sitting in corner talking softly and leaving more delicious food, Zsa Zsa was not the slightest at ease or warming up. She still hissed and tried to scratch me when my hand got near so she could sniff it. However, when any one of my cats walked in to peer through the glass walls, she cried. She wanted to be with them. My heart was breaking. The shower was a sterile, cold jail cell for her. Zsa Zsa was increasingly unhappy.

I was going to release her outdoors but in sharing the update with a new volunteer, Deborah mentioned she had great success in socializing cats. What did she do differently? At first Deborah kept Zsa Zsa inside a catio playpen indoors. But that bared no different results than my attempt. Zsa Zsa yearned to be with other cats, or free like them and was still feral. There was only one solution left. Release her in the backyard with the other feral cats.

With nothing to lose, only to gain, Deborah let Zsa Zsa loose in her gated backyard. We held our breath for hours, expecting the worst. Yet it turned out brilliantly. Better than we could have hoped for. You see Deborah has a home with backyard and a cat window. Instead of a doggy door, she has a cat window. Cats come in and out. For several days Zsa Zsa remained in the yard, thankfully, and still came to eat and drink at the designated bowls set outside. She seemed relieved. It did not take long for her to use the cat window. Soon Zsa Zsa was nestling on the sofa, in a box and finally to crown it all--Deborah could pet her!

Of course finding an adopter with a similar set up would be very challenging. But Deborah fell in love with her foster kitty. Zsa Zsa is stunning and that test of love and patience has created a bond that is unbearable to break.

The lesson: Like people, and other living creatures, cats also, depending on their personality and surroundings, have their own way to transition and adapt to a new environment. Don't give up so easily. There is always a solution if you are willing to be patient and diligently find it.

Talk about two peas in a pod. Well these two black peas are foster brothers. The same color, the same gender (male), the same age, these two kittens are thrilled to have eachother as playmates.

Ray Ray, born in Little Haiti in Miami, was born without eyes but he can still walk, climb, and jump. His fur is super soft. He acts like any other kitten. So do not worry about him! Worry about yourself and your food. He loves to eat and will find a way to jump or climb to get to food.

Rocky Balboa of Miami (Rocky for short), was discovered alone in downtown Miami. Somehow he disconnected from his mother. Thankfully he was saved from fast moving vehicles. Rocky has jet black satin fur and is quick as lightening. He also loves to snuggle.

Both kittens are 5 months and ready for permanent home. Vaccinated, blood test for feline aids and leukemia were negative, pending neutering.

Today was a special day in fulfilling the mission of education. Christine Michaels along with another volunteer Suely Caramelo, in answering a broadcast request by the Cat Network, offered to bring foster kittens for the live taping of a segment on Telemundo, to feature a new kitten playground by Catit, a manufacturer of variety of pet products.

This was also an opportunity to speak to a nationwide Hispanic viewing audience, alongside a veterinarian to discuss the benefits of having a cat and how they differ from dogs as pets.

She shared that first when adopting a cat, not to think of them as a rescued pet but as a new family member. Adoptions are a commitment for life. This is important as many people fall in love with the cuteness of kittens (and puppies) but later lose sense of responsibility when the pets are older and drop them off at shelters, adding to the epidemic of homeless pets. It's an important decision.

Christine brought her latest rescue kitten, Ray Ray, a blind black kitten to show that cats each have their own personality. And while Ray Ray was born without eyes and will never see, he still acts like a kitten and is not hindered by his blindness.

We are very proud of little Ray Ray and amazed to watch him use his other senses in guiding him. As Christine spoke he automatically faced the camera. When she finished and Diego started speaking, Ray Ray automatically turned to face him. He was so calm. After that day, we knew Ray Ray would make a great therapy cat in visiting sick children or elderly in hospitals and nursing homes.

the nature of cats as hunters, climbers, crawlers, scent-driven

The key points shared were:

- Cats, while more independent, can also be very social and affectionate
- Families with children should have a cat as their first pet. Cats do NOT cause asthma or allergies. On the contrary, having cats around young children, can help reduce the chance of acquiring these debilitating conditions.
- Cats are very clean pets. They groom themselves.
- Kittens are good for young children, because kittens are active and playful and entertaining. This bond helps children to respect animals.
- It is better to keep pet cats indoors but they still need exercise, as we all do. The Catit playground incorporates all the simulations for feathers, scratchers, obstacles to climb, and moving objects.

The segment was aired live nationwide and provided an excellent opportunity to address the Hispanic audience and reinforce long-time science about cats (not readily available in many Hispanic countries) and overturn many myths that still persist.

Blind kitten, Ray Ray soon after he was rescued at 10 weeks of age

Our latest rescue kitten has a name--Ray Ray, yes after Ray Charles.

He was taken to the best feline ophthalmologist in Miami, Dr. Karpanski. Sadly Ray Ray was born with a defect, no eyes, that he will never be able to see. But that does not stop this kitten from acting like a kitten! He can run, play, climb, and jump down. It is amazing to watch him move around and play like any other kitten. Blind kittens rely on their other senses.

We want to thank every person who played a role in saving Ray Ray and donated for his vet care. This year has been one of the worse stray kitten season, with hundreds born and found and not enough shelters and volunteers to bottle feed and care for them. This blind kitty was spotted in Little Haiti (Miami) and posted on Facebook for pleas to rescue him. Riverfront Cats was tagged after a couple of days and we stepped in.

Ray Ray had minor health issues for which he has been treated. He did test negative for feline Aids and Leukemia and is ready for adoption!

However he bonded with another rescue black kitten of the same age. Him and Rocky are like fraternal twins. They play together, sleep together, and eat together in unison. And here he is...an all black 10 week old kitten rescued from Little Haiti neighborhood. And he's extra special. He's mostly blind. Our first one at Riverfront Cats. Thanks to a teamwork effort by local residents, this kitten will get the TLC and medical attention to regain as much of his eyesight as possible all while living indoors in a loving, nurturing, cage-free environment.

Meet the latest Riverfront rescue kitty--an all black kitten named Rocky!

Rocky was found as a stray on the property, apparently separated from his mother and siblings. He is currently 10 weeks old and has clean bill of health, negative blood tests, and first round of vaccinations.

Rocky is snuggable, loveable and playful. While he initially hides when guests arrive, it doesn't take him long to appear and show off his running, jumping and tackling-of-toys skills. He's very active and would love another active playmate that welcomes his boxing, tackling and other athletic skills.

National Feral Cat Day- Share Your Story and Photos!

It's National Feral Cat Day!

We are grateful for this day to raise awareness of the ongoing plight of homeless cats.

Recent past years have witnessed improvements in educating the general public about feral cats:

Residents taking an interest in helping cats in their own neighborhood by feeding, trapping, fostering, donating, and sharing information on social media.
Launch of several Facebook pages for local communities to network, communicate and work as a team to help cats.
Municipalities starting TNR programs and offering low-cost or free spay/neuter.

In showing neighbors what we do, they respond
"It's like a mini National Geographic! Look at that mini black panther ,"says one child.
Love it when that happens! Education working...

Miami may have a high rate of homeless cats, but we are also on the forefront of addressing solutions to reverse this trend. It's an ongoing challenge. There are good days and bad days.

Helio Needs Blood Transfusion & Prayers

Helio, a handsome, big green eyed, gray tabby, is fighting for his life.

One of the first ten kittens rescued by founder Christine Michaels, now seven years old, he is suddenly gravely ill with severe anemia.

Healthy and playful one day, he started to show signs of loss of appetite, lethargy and sleeping in the closet. Three major red flags of a health issue. Upon examination at the veterinary clinic, the vet observed his white gums. After a comprehensive blood test it showed Helio had severe anemia. The X-ray did not show any anomalies. So after a Vitamin B12 shot, IV fluid, and some appetizing canned cat food prescribed, Helio was sent home. Unfortunately he refused to eat at home. And after three days he returned to the vet. Further blood tests showed his blood platelet count dropped even lower. His condition was now critical.

The next day Helio was admitted to the emergency pet hospital at MVS. Miami Veterinary Specialists provides 24 hour pet medical care. Hooked up to IVs and machines, Helio shows no signs of responsiveness, typical for a cat that is afraid of strange environment. He was lying in the corner, his body inward and sullen, eyes suspect, sheepish, and scared at the same time... a quiet living hell. Only when Christine came to visit did he muster every ounce of strength to stand and greet her. She opened the cage and his bowed insistent on petting and head butts. Helio would not stop crying. He was grateful to see a friendly face. At the same time he was pleading to get out. Our hearts were torn as she had to say goodbye, but Christine repeated a familiar phrase "Ill be back, I promise I'll be back." The vet observing shared that Helio understood Christine and it seemed to give Helio hope. The vet said there is hope for Helio.

Helio cries for affection

A key treatment was a blood transfusion. According to the vet most pets respond well to one transfusion, however, Helio did not improve with the first transfusion. The vet indicated a second or third transfusion may be needed but not a guarantee he would live. As each transfusion costs $900 (for all costs related to the treatment), payments must be made upfront at the hospital. Some families are forced to choose euthanasia when they lack the funds. How tragic!

The vet awaited our answer. Of course we would try again. Helio was a survivor, a rescue kitten from the streets of downtown Miami. Money could always be raised. We wanted to set an example that pets as family members, deserve the same respect and dignity of life as human family members. Money should not determine whether a pet lives or dies if there is a chance he will survive.

Bocelli after Andrea Bocelli because he literally serenades his pet owner for attention and affection.

Yes, Helio is a very special cat. Sadly his mother Cosette who has been pictured on a number of blog posts and on social media, had died suddenly this summer. It is strongly believed she was poisoned. This is just another undertaking, another battle, another part of our mission in educating residents and communities about stray cats and the law against animal cruelty. Helio was her only kitten.
