The first thing we did was a ‘Would You Rather’ game. We were given two options and had to choose which one we would rather. At the end you ended up with a four-letter code. You then had to walk around the room and find six people who had the same code, and they could not be from your school.

We learned about the responsibility of being a student leader, which included being an example to others, being a helper to others, being a voice for others and being willing to do what the school needs (which involved me going up the front with kids from other schools and pretending to play musical instruments)! After that, we had our recess break before going back inside for more fun and games.

This session was about leadership through friendship in which we learned conversations are more effective than instructions, sharing responsibility is more important than showing off responsibility and fun is more effective than feeling forced. We also enjoyed our head boy (Josiah) going up and role playing as Buzz Lightyear.

After our second break we learned about how to make new ideas to help others. Our students came up with many ideas which included (but not limited to) a school book club, tutoring, Chess club and helping arrange free sports games in the community. We learned about how to be realistic and achieving our goals by the end of the year. We even had one of the ESC students, Tate win in a game of “Guess That Law”.

Before long, it was time to head back home on the train. After a fun, eventful and educational day we were all exhausted. We learned lots while having an amazing time and I know we are all coming back from this with new minds, new perspectives and new ideas to help make the school a better place this year.

Help donate to your local school!

• At Gilbert & Sons we are helping our local schools with our Peel School Program.
  Anyone can join, parents, grandparents, friends or just helping support your local school in your community.
• Every time you shop at Gilbert & Son’s, scan your card at the checkout before you pay & we will donate 1 point for every dollar you spend to your nominated school. 
• The school you have nominated will have no restrictions for what they utilise the funds towards. Whether it be mentoring programs, musical instruments or learning programs. When target limits are reached, schools will be presented with a cheque.
• You can select any school in the Peel region or towards Rockingham. You can only put your points towards one school per card per person.
• You can sign up in-store or online. Once you have signed up online, please collect your card in-store.

This is our way of saying ‘thank you’ and giving back something small to a cause that really matters to all of us.

The kindy students have enjoyed sharing the ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear’ book which explores many different colours. They have had a lot of fun practising their colouring and cutting skills to create wonderful bear masks!

All donations collected support The Bridge Builders Christmas appeal. This was our biggest year yet with over 3 vans full of food donated.

The students had an exciting time building their hampers and the competition was a wonderful opportunity to learn about giving and supporting our wider community!!

Leading up to this competition, Emma and Woody have spent 2hrs every Saturday morning for the last 2 months getting their project ready with the help of a local mentor, Veronica Smith. 

The Game Changer competition took place on Monday 28 October 2024. There were over 100 teams from a variety of schools all over WA, involving almost 400 students.  

Emma and Woody did a great job presenting their idea on how to capture lightning and utilize the energy. They presented to two groups of judges, explaining their ideas and answering questions. 

Unfortunately, this time around they didn’t place for this project, but over the lunch break they had another opportunity to participate in a Marshmallow Bridge Building competition. There was a prize for the strongest and another for the most innovative. They won the latter and will share a $150 voucher for their efforts. 

On behalf of everyone here at Riverside PS, I would like to pass on my congratulations to Emma and Woody on their amazing efforts. They represented our school with pride and were fantastic ambassadors for our school, our community and the Peel region.

It has been another successful year for the Year 6 students who chose to belong to the Riverside Drama Club and perform in the 2024 Yoh Fest at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.

These talented students co-wrote, edited, and performed a multi-layered drama piece entitled ‘The Pink Basketball’, based on the theme ‘Inclusion.’

The judges were touched with the sincerity, energy and humor the students displayed in their performance.

The plot tells the story of a popular and rich student, who lets himself and everyone else down, by excluding himself from a very important basketball match, all because the students wouldn’t use his birthday gift of a pink basketball. In the end, Archie realized the importance of including himself in all school and team activities, as he let his team down, his mum, who turned up unexpectedly for the match, and himself, as the team had to play with a pink basketball anyway.

Our lead player, and Head Boy, Isaac McNaughton, was able to attend Saturday’s presentation night, and collect the trophy on behalf of the Club and Riverside Primary School.  It is being proudly displayed in the Administration Office for a short time.

A huge ‘Well Done’ to all the students who lived up to the ‘Act, Belong, Commit’ movement in our community.

We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all parents and staff who gave up their time and resources to make this happen for the students. We could not have had such a professional finish without your kind support.

And now to look forward to seeing what 2025 brings, with the new Yoh Fest theme entitled – ‘Colour my World – The world is a canvas; We are the art & we all bloom in different shades.”

In Physical Education classes the Year 1/2 students have been practicing key movement skills, navigating space safely and techniques for throwing and catching effectively. The Year 3s and 4s have been learning tennis in classes and may have the opportunity to showcase their skills in Week 6 at the Red Ball Tennis Tournament. The Year 5/6 classes have been learning Cricket and Lawn Bowls, with opportunities to make the Interschool Cricket and Lawn Bowls teams competing in Week 6.

SEPEP is also underway for our year 5 and 6 students. All students were placed into teams and then given the opportunity to give themselves a team name, uniform and roles to play to effectively run a competition. The chosen sports were soccer, volleyball and handball. Currently in 1^st place is the ‘Drippy Dogz’ winning their first two games. The students setup, umpire, score and pack away the games and it has been great to see the students take on this responsibility.

The students participated in many musical activities, ranging from playing by ear accompanied by our fabulous IMSS teachers on electric guitars, through to reading music and holding pieces together whilst different parts were playing around them.

The IMSS students have been playing their instruments for approximately 9 – 18months and did a great job playing in an ensemble, many for the first time.

The students gave their parents, caregivers and friends a concert at the end of the day to show how much they had accomplished in one day. It was an amazing experience for all involved and we hope that these students are inspired to continue their musical learning journeys.
