No-Sew Burlap Tablerunner

I have a secret. Well actually I have many, ha ha, but today I am revealing one: I can't sew. Don't judge, don't hate... I. don't. sew. It's true and I will readily admit it. I truly envy all the beautifully sewn creations I see out there in blog land. But, while I have many talents, sewing just isn't one of them. It is on my very long list of "things to do before I die."

As with many of you, I have fallen in love with burlap. It all began with my kitchen update to French Country and discover that natural fabrics are part of the decor. Thus enter burlap. Hmmm... what can I do with burlap... such a lovely fabric...

I discovered all sorts of very cool table runners created out of burlap all over blog land and Etsy. But, most, if not all, involved sewing. Crap! Well, never one to be deterred easily, I decided to create my own.

The first one I made was super simple. Go to Joanne's, get a few yards of fabric, cut to desired length and width, wash, dry, and iron out the wrinkles. The washing and drying create awesome fraying which of course we want. I loved it and it worked perfectly in my kitchen.

But then I started seeing some more elaborate burlap runners with lace and rosettes. I love the combination of the burlap and lace but it required sewing. Or does it? Not if your brain works like mine! I. Can. Glue. It!

Now I ask you: why was fabric glue invented? For non-sewers right? Well, maybe not but it works.

What I used:

Burlap fabric cut to about 72" L x 16" W

Vintage Lace

Rosette (I cheated a bit and used some Melissa Frances ones that I had)

Fabric Tac

I discovered that it's really quite easy to fray burlap myself by pulling threads at the ends. That way I could control how "frayed" I wanted it. Then I measured my vintage lace and glued it to the ends and also glued the rosette on. Easy, easy, easy and yet so pretty!

What do you think? I am in love and it looks fabulous in my French Country kitchen!

This is Murphy and he is a Pekingese that we received from a rescue organization in PA.

This was on our drive home, when we stopped for dinner. He was located about three hours away.

It's time to "think pink"

I am joining Pink Saturday this week which I haven't done in like forever!

I will be getting out my pink shorts...

... and my pink flip flops....

...because here in Western New York we are having near record warmth - about 80 for the next few days! I know for some of you in the Southern states that would be a cool down for you but around these parts that's pretty warm for us! I am giddy with excitement! Yay, I get to wear my flip flops a little longer which means I can keep those boots in the back of my closet too!

Oh and since it is "Pink" October here's a friendly reminder:

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month! I am guessing you all know that by now, but did you have your mammogram this year? I sure did over the summer and while it's not my favorite thing to do I am sure glad that I did. And thankfully, I received a "clean bill of health." I hope you do too!

Back in the Day Bakery and my own yummy cookies

Last month my husband and I were fortunate enough to get away after the triplets went back to college. Of course we went to Myrtle Beach but we also took a side trip to Savannah, GA, a city I have long wanted to see. It is charming and beautiful. While I was there I had to visit a bakery I have read about on various blogs. So, on the way back to MB the hubby and I stopped in for a visit (and some treats too).

It is so very quaint and decorated in wonderful, drool-worthy vintage decor!

Bad picture but I was trying to show you the beautiful chandelier!

Of course we had to sample the goodies...

We ended up with some yummy cupcakes - "old-fashioned" pictured here and a very yummy chocolate! I meant to take a picture of the ones in the box but well I ate them before I remembered! We also sampled their banana pudding which was amazing! I am certainly glad we stopped by, it was worth it.

Now, for my own recently crafted cookies. The original recipe is found at Confessions of a Cookbook Queen and is one of my favorite blogs! These are called Triple Peanut butter Cookies and I followed the recipe exactly except....

I used semi-sweet chocolate chips instead of the peanut butter M & M's. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of triple peanut butter but there's just something so alluring about peanut butter and chocolate. And, I still put in the peanut butter cups!

Just look at these babies! They are amazing! Thick, rich, gooey, peanut buttery, chocolately, - what's not to love! So grab the recipe and get baking! Oh, and you will need an icey cold glass of milk!

The absolute BEST ice coffee, ever!

So, you all know the Pioneer Woman, right? Actually I just stumbled upon her blog recently. If you haven't visited her blog I really encourage you to do so as she has some amazing recipes and other great stories on her site. If I am not wrong I believe she published a cookbook.

The reason I ask is because I found the BEST, and I do mean the best, ice coffee recipe on her site. Check out her recipe here. I loved her recipe but that is just too much coffee, even for me, so I've tweaked it for my own taste.

I absolutely adore coffee and most likely consume more than I should. I always start with a hot cup in the morning, no matter what the temperature is outside. And, I always enjoy hot coffee after dinner as well. But, in between it's all ice coffee, baby! While I am generally a Starbucks girl, I have found that Dunkin Donuts makes a pretty good ice coffee. I swear, they knew my order the second I pulled up and started to order in the drive through. While I am digging my own ice coffee, I do miss my friends at DD, ha!

Anyhoo, here's my tweaked recipe of the PW Perfect Ice Coffee Recipe. This really couldn't be any easier, btw!

Ice Coffee
Yields approximately 1 Gallon

Ingredients:
~16 oz of a rich, flavorful coffee (I of course used Starbucks, which you can find in your grocery store)
~8 Cups of water

Utensils:
~Large pot or container
~Mesh Strainer
~Cheese cloth

Directions:
In your large pot combine the coffee and water, stirring to cover all of the grounds. Cover and let set about 8 hours though I usually like to do it over night.

Once your coffee is ready, strain your coffee into a new container. Make sure you put cheese cloth or a napkin (which I use with great success!) in the strainer before you begin to ensure no grounds seep through the strainer. This may take a few minutes but it is well worth the wait. Now be sure to chill this lovely beverage since it is, well, ice coffee!

In reading the comments on PW's blog, a seemingly simple yet crucial comment was made. Make sure you freeze some coffee in ice cube trays so you won't have that dreaded melt, ruining your perfectly created coffee! Genius, right?

To serve:
Once your coffee is prepared and chilled you are ready to create your very own ice coffee masterpiece.

Here's what I do for my perfect cup - I fill my cup with about 2/3 full of coffee and 1/3 with cream (I use fat free) and add 2 tsp of sugar. Many times I will also add a tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk (also a PW recommendation) and I am in heaven! Don't forget to mix well and add your coffee ice cubes! A paper straw adds a nice touch too.

Just think of all you can do with this coffee base.
-drink it straight up black
-add flavored creamers
-add flavored syrups
-add chocolate or caramel ice cream toppings
-keep it low calorie/low fat by adding artificial sweetener and skim milk
-if decadence is what you're looking for I would suggest adding whole cream
-add whipped topping and drizzle chocolate or caramel on top and don't forget the sprinkles!

Don't forget to make sure you have a "to go" cup as you will not want to part with this as you head out the door!

WARNING: Picture intensive post!!!!! (I think I got a tiny bit over zealous!)

So a couple of months ago I decided I really hated my kitchen curtains and needed some new ones. Simple right? Ha, wrong! I then found a burlap table runner that I loved and it was so easy for me to make that I had to run out to Joanne's right then and get the burlap. Then I discovered that burlap is often used in French Farmhouse decor. Well, after searching French Farmhouse, I stumbled upon French Country and it was love, instantly! You see how a total kitchen re-do can occur because of new curtains right? I am not crazy or anything, right?

What I discovered was that French Country includes roosters (which I adore), natural materials such as burlap, striped or checked fabric, colors such as yellows, blues, and even soft ocean tones, sunflowers, grapes, toile designs, displays of flowers, fruits and vegetables, and lavender. Plus, the point of the kitchen is to have things handy. Thus, baskets and displays of kitchen objects are useful! Oh, did I mention I am in LOVE?!

We completely remodeled our kitchen several years ago which included knocking out a wall to combine the kitchen and dining areas, getting new oak cupboards, and new laminate flooring. Plus, we just painted the kitchen yellow last year and I already had cobalt blue accents and roosters. Some how, I just never tire of roosters, ha!

So here's some of what I have added:

new clock and a vintage inspired rooster print

a lovely french sign from this Esty seller

French Farmhouse baskets from my site filled with faux pears and lavender (I hand made the burlap rosette)

vintage inspired wire basket filled with new and vintage cookie cutters

a wire basket center piece with apples and Fleur DE Lis votive holders from Yankee Candle (though I often fill them with flowers)

burlap pillows on my new bench - see that number 3 pillow - if you read my blog regularly you know I have triplets and I couldn't turn down this muslin pillow - it spoke to me, ya know

toile ware juicer and salt and pepper shakers - I actually use that juicer quite often - who knew

enamelware utensil holder with a Graphics Fairy silverware transfer using the Citrasolv method which I will share in a later post (super, duper easy)

a cluster of French Country adornments - I made the chalk board myself and I will share that too - of course you can find that all over blog land

more GF graphics inserted into a frame I painted and distressed

a nice vignette of more FC decor including roosters and paper hydrangeas

so I could do this with my spices - no more endless searches, yay~

Cool Lemonade for a hot day!

It's hot outside!

Like fry an egg on the sidewalk hot!

Our high the other day was 95 degrees! Now I know for some people that's the norm, maybe even a little cool, ha! But, in these parts that's hot!

Don't get me wrong.

I love it! Yep. L-O-V-E. Don't hate me.

This is why I endure our awful winters.

I love flying out the door with shorts and flip flops. Who needs a winter coat, boots, hats, gloves, scarves, and a remote car starter to warm up the car so my face doesn't freeze.

Nope, not me.

Here's my secret: I. Hate. Winter. I hate snow and cold. If I have to hear “wind chill factor,” “blowing and drifting snow,” or “Winter weather advisory” anytime soon I am going to puke!

Okay so if you read my blog you know my disdain of Winter is not really a secret!

But for the time being I am loving it.

Yep I sweat the second I leave the air conditioned house but that's okay.

I don't have to shovel.
I don't have to search high and low for that missing glove.
I don't have to leave early to clear the snow from my car.
I don't have to leave early because there's snow on the roads and travel will take longer.
I don't have to wear “proper” boots (you know what I mean – the ones without heals- the ugly ones that I swore I would never be caught dead in!).

Nope.

I grab my flip flops and sun glasses and I am out the door!

And

I have a cool beverage.

Like Lemonade.

Is there anything better on a hot day then lemonade? Okay maybe Sweet Tea or Ice Coffee. But Lemonade is really good and I have a recipe to share.

Did you know that Lemonade is super easy to make? You want to give it a try?

Lemonade
Adapted from My Little House Cookbook (I bought this when my children were little so they could cook but I use it still, ha!).
What you'll need:

½ Cup Sugar (or adapted for your taste)
1 Cup hot tap water
½ Cup lemon juice (I used about 4 small lemons but you could use lemon concentrate too)
2 Cups cold water
lemons slices to garnish if desired

Pour the sugar in your serving pitcher. Add the hot water and stir until the sugar dissolves. Add your lemon juice and water. Stir and chill until ready to serve. Of course you can add ice and enjoy immediately.

To make it pretty add ice to a tall glass, pour lemonade and garnish with a sliced lemon half. Don't forget to add a pretty paper straw!

I am still around!

Hey! How are you all? I sure have missed my blogging friends! I just wanted to let you know that I am still around, ha! I have been visiting a lot of you but stupid blogger hasn't let me leave comments. I think (I hope) that problem has been corrected!

I have actually accomplished so much since we last talked! I've:
~updated my kitchen
~completed my landscaping
~celebrated the triplet's 20th birthday
~helped my last daughter move out
~cleaned, cleaned, and cleaned some more! There's still plenty of that to do though. Since all of my children moved out, I have been going through lots of stuff and getting rid of it! I am cleaning and sprucing up my house with the thought that I will be selling it in a couple of years. So, anything I don't want to move gets tossed!
~took a couple of trips
~focused on getting things organized in my new practice
~spent more time with hubby
and oh so much more! While I miss blogging I have enjoyed some time to do other things. But, having said that I have oh so much to blog about so I will be back soon. First up will be my kitchen. It didn't need any major updates but I changed up the decor. Let's just say it all started with this:

Goodbye my friend!

We had to say goodbye to our sweet little Pekingese this week after a long struggle! It is always so, so hard to make this decision but I know in my heart it was the decision that had to be made. We rescued this guy when he was about 6 years old from the local SPCA where he was slated to be euthanized. I don't typically go for little dogs or boy dogs but something told me I should help him out! My husband was more than a little perturbed being we already had 2 dogs but as it turns out this was his best friend!

We don't really know much about his history other than that he was in the animal shelter for 8 months. He was neutered when he arrived at the shelter so my best guess is that he was used as a "stud" dog. He did not know how to play, or socialize, or any other simple commands. He arrived to use with an awful "kennel" cough, an eye infection, and full of matts (a stick was even embedded in one of his matts!). While I appreciate the SPCA I just don't know how they could let this guy end up like this!

His original name was "Dingle" ugh! So we set about changing it and my daughter chose "Ricco James" but we ended up calling him "Jim." He was cranky, full of attitude and oppositional, but we fell in love with him. His favorite activity was to go "byes" as he loved his walks! He never did learn how to play, hated our cats and our other dogs. He generally preferred men though I tried my hardest to endear myself to him, ha!

In the last year he developed Cushings Disease and Dementia. We cared for him until it was clear he wasn't too happy and there was nothing else we could do! It just seems so unjust that one little dog suffered so much. I do hope "Jim" enjoyed his six years with us and that we gave him some quality of life. He certainly taught me so much and I will miss the little guy!

How could you not fall in love with this little face?!

Goodbye my sweet little friend! I am saddened that you are gone but I hope you're enjoying your "byes" in a much better place! Til we meet again...

Laundry Soap Recipe on this fine White Wednesday!

I am sure many of you already know this but for those who don't I wanted to share. I've read on multiple blogs and in the land of Google that you can make your own laundry detergent which is natural and oh so much cheaper. I wish I would have done this years ago actually when all the children lived at home, ha! After searching and searching, I found a recipe I like here - at the Beehive Cottage and I followed her recipe.

What you'll need:

4# Borax
4# Washing Soda
4# Baking Soda
3 Bars of Ivory, Fels Naptha, or Zote Soap

All of these items can be found in the laundry isle at your local grocery store. Walmart should have everything too. I used Ivory Soap simply because I couldn't find the others but I did subsequently find Fels Naptha at Walmart and will most likely use that next time.

All you need to do is grate your soap (Ivory was super easy to grate being it's a soft soap) and mix everything together. Couldn't be easier! To laundry your clothes place 2 Tbsps in and you're set! I like to dissolve mine in hot water first and then add it. You will not see suds when you wash with this but all is good and everything comes out squeaky clean!

Now in keeping with all natural laundry cleaner, I am now using White Vinegar for my fabric softener. When I did a post on this I forgot to mention that I use 1/4 cup which I add to my fabric softener dispenser in my washer. Otherwise, you just add it to the rinse cycle. Once again, your clothes will not smell like vinegar, I promise! That come out smelling clean and there is no static cling!

Also, I have been using the Fels Naptha as a pre-treatment for stains. If you know me then you know that I am rarely without a cup of coffee in my hand and thus I spill quite often, ha! I have found that the Fels Naptha works rather well!

I found an awesome 2 gallon apothecary jar at Target.com for a good price. I also happened to notice them at Walmart too. Of course I had to "pretty" my jars by making and adding labels from graphics from the Graphics Fairy. I even made a cute little jar for my clothes pins!

Laundry Day Pink Saturday

Another wonderful Pink Saturday has arrived! Please be sure to visit our lovely hostess Beverly to view all of the participants this week!

My contribution this week is a lovely label I made using graphics from the Graphics Fairy.

Ah, I forgot to take a picture of the label on the bottle, oops! I made this for my pretty little jar that now holds my White Vinegar, aka Fabric Softener. Did you know that if you put vinegar in your rinse cycle it eliminates the need for any other fabric softener? Google and various blogs told me so, ha! I am on an all natural cleaning kick and I just had to try it! I know what you're thinking: "my clothes will smell like vinegar, yuck!" Guess what, that don't! I promise! And there's no static cling and vinegar is purposed to whitenen as well. I've been using it for about 2 weeks now and I am thrilled!

Changes for my Boutique

If you follow me on Facebook or you are newsletter subscriber you already know this but it occurred to me that I did not post it on my blog. After some careful consideration I have decided to significantly downsize my on-line website - RME Boutique. This was not an easy decision to make but I felt it was time for a variety of reasons. First, my private practice is really consuming more time than I imagined. I can't complain because I love what I do and I am so grateful for the trust people place in me. But, when I moved my practice I didn't imagine that it would grow so fast. So, since I can't do it all (and I've tried, ha!) I have had to make some difficult choices.

I do plan on selling my items somewhere, on a much smaller scale. Etsy perhaps? I am not sure yet but I will keep you up-to-date on where I am at. I love my boutique and I love meeting new people too so I want to stay engaged somehow.

Yummy Strawberry Cake that you too can make!

I decided to make the most awesome cake for Easter. I found the recipe here and I just had to share. I have never made anything quite like it. Believe me when I tell you it was a massive, I mean a MASSIVE cake! It was super easy, though a bit time consuming, and loved by all!

Isn't she pretty? I am not sure you can tell the massive size from this picture. And, frankly, I didn't realize how big this baby would be!

Now of course I am well aware that my cake is not nearly as pretty as I am Baker's but she sure did taste amazing and I think she looks okay!

Here's what you'll need:

Box of Red Velvet Cake Mix
Box of White or Yellow Cake Mix
Whipped Cream
Strawberries

And that's it! Couldn't be much easier! Now here's an awesome tip for you that I read on someone's blog (and I am sorry I can't remember where) and that I googled too. Prepare your cake mix as usual but replace the water with Buttermilk! Yep, buttermilk. It makes the cake sinfully moist! And, I always undercook my cakes a wee bit because I can't stand a dry cake. Trust me, the buttermilk works so well!

So prepare your cakes as directed, in 9" pans. Cool and you're ready to assemble.

Start with whatever layer you want - as you can see I chose the red velvet. Next, layer with whipped cream and then strawberries. Repeat with each layer, until it looks like:

This! Now, I think this is pretty like this but I wanted to cover the entire cake with whipped cream.

Like so. I threw some large chocolate chunks that I had on top. I am thinking I might add them in between each layer or in the vanilla layers next time I make this. Oh yea, there will be a next time!

I don't think that this picture really shows the visible appeal of this cake. It has it all - beauty and taste!

Did I mention that is was delicious? A big hit in my family for sure!!! Go a head and give it a try!

Cloning with Picnik

After my last post on playing with Picnik a few people asked me to demonstrate how to use the cloning feature on Picnik to blend pictures. I am more than happy to do so but please remember I am a novice at this but I will show you what I know how to do. Please note that you must have a premium membership with Picnik to use the cloning feature. I think it's about 25 bucks a year.

Here's the two pictures I would like to combine:

A pretty background from the Graphics Fairy... &

A cupcake picture (and I forgot where I got this from, sorry).

Once you're on the homepage of Picnik, click on the Library Tab, then click on "Make a Collage." Of course you'll need to upload your pictures here. You'll note on that on the left hand side you can select from a variety of different collage designs. For simplicity I chose just 2 spaces for this design. Once you've chosen your pictures (just drag and drop which pictures you would like) click done and you're ready to clone!

It will look like this. But remember that you can choose as many pictures as you like.

As you can see I want to clone my cupcakes to add to my new background. So, click on the advanced tab at the top of the page and you will see a new menu of items on your left side. The very top one is the cloning feature. Click on the cloning feature and then click on the area of the picture that you want to clone. Next, using your left click on your mouse, add the new picture to the second one (hold left mouse button down and drag on the area of the page that you want to add it to). Note that you can change the size of the brush. Remember too that you can click on "undo" in the right hand corner at any time if you don't like something.

I ended up with this

Notice in the top photo how my cupcakes have some of the former background in the new design? No problem! Simply click on the eraser (you can change the size of that too to get into really tight places) and drag your mouse around the areas that you don't want.

So I've cleaned up what I didn't want and I am happy with how my transferred cupcakes look like.

Lastly, click on the edit tab and crop your picture. What do you think????

There is so much you can do with Picnik and they have the greatest fonts that you can add too. So give it a shot, explore, experiment and have some fun.

I would loooovvee to see what you come up with!

Fun with Piknic

Am I the last person on Earth to find out how much fun Picnik is? I have browsed it before but never really did anything with it until the last month or so and yes, I paid for the premium package. It has a lot of wonderful tools but I know it's not as good as Photoshop. I actually have Photoshop but it overwhelms me and I even bought a book, ha! I am more of a visual learner though so I need to take a class and it is on my list of "things to do before I die."

I wanted to make some vintage type labels for my new cleaning products... more on that later.

I loved these 2 graphics from Dover and the Graphics Fairy so I blended them together to create a label for my kitchen cleanser:

Picnik has a cloning tool which helped me add the flowers to cover up what was in the original label and to add the bird. I used Marcella Font which I love! As you can tell I cropped out some of the original picture too. Since my kitchen is yellow and cobalt blue, this label goes very well! The tag line "All the Clean You Need" is actual a saying I found on a vintage Tide advertisement.

Here you can see that I added a scrub brush from the picture on the right to the rose label.

Again, I added a wash tub to this graphic with the cloning feature. I think this might be my favorite.

Some day I will learn to Photoshop but in the meantime I will continue to play with Picnik.

Pink Saturday is here, yipee, but where is Spring?

I don't know about you but I just think pretty pink flowers on a warm sunny day are just about perfection! I have survived our long dreary Winter and I am oh so ready for Spring! Yes, I know, technically it is Spring but our temperatures around here don't feel like it. And, I just started seeing some buds on the trees but I am still awaiting some pretty daffodils and tulips, ugh!

As I was looking through my pictures, wondering what to post for this PS, I saw some pretty pictures I took last summer. So, while I am waiting, I thought I would post them again so I can recall that Summer does eventually arrive, right?????

I know some of you are lucky enough to be in a warmer climate and are now enjoying your pretty blossoms.

Beautiful Blogging ~ Can Playing in Mud Make You Feel Better?

So it's true, I have returned from the beach where it was rather cold and rainy, but the beach non-the-less! I saw some absolutely beautiful blossoms in South Carolina and I was sooooo jealous! Here in Western New York there's still a bit of snow and we are "patiently" awaiting our blooms! But in the interest of all of my friends, near and far, I thought it would be a good time to post this.

If you're like me, you can't wait to get out in the yard and begin digging and planting. Gardening has become a recent passion of mine and while I am far from a master gardener, I sure do enjoy it. I adore the instant gratification of viewing my hard work: the trimmed bushes, the beautiful rainbow of colors poking through the freshly planted pots, and the neatly trimmed grass. Moreover, I can get literally get lost in all the digging and pulling and planting, not a care in the world. It's hard work but oh so satisfying. As a clinical social worker I often recommend to my clients that they try gardening as a mean of relaxation and meditation as you literally become entranced in your work and think of little else. But did you know that gardening can actually help you feel better?

Scientist have recently discovered that playing in the dirt can actually enhance the mood. Mycobacterium vaccae, a bacteria that is naturally occurring in soil, is thought to stimulate the production of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain (2) which just might improve the immune system and mood. A lack of serotonin is linked with depression in people. Scientists at Bristol University discovered that lung cancer patients being treated with Mycobacterium vaccae noted improvements in the quality of life. Further, research done with mice exposed to this bacteria have shown increased amounts of serotonin in their brains (1). Thus, more research is being conducted to determine if Mycobacterium vaccae has antidepressant qualities.

So now you have another reason to get out in the garden. Not only will you have a beautiful yard and yummy home-grown veggies, but you may also enhance your mood, naturally!

Look at this gorgeous pink sand! Who knew there was pink sand???? Apparently pink sand can be found in parts of the Caribbean.

It's time for a yummy dinner!

Hello blogging buddies! I'm still kind of running ragged with my new office change though slowly but surely things are coming together. The good news is that I am going to the beach next week and I can't wait! If you've been following me for a while then surely you know by now how much I love the beach! It's my place to relax and rejuvenate and I really could use that about now.

In the mean time, life goes on. I actually haven't been cooking too much lately and my lovely daughter had a special request: macaroni and cheese. So what's a mother to do? Yes, of course, whip up a batch. One of my favorite things to do lately is browse blogs looking for new recipes. So I thought you might enjoy it as much as we do so I'd like to share the recipe with you. This was adapted from an old Betty Crocker recipe.

Here's what you'll need.

-an onion

-cheese - I used three kinds, Velveeta, Sharp Cheddar, and Mozzarella

-flour

-milk

-bread crumbs

-bacos

-pasta of your choice - I used penne

Now there's something that you should know. I don't measure things unless I am baking. I simply look at a recipe and decide how I want to do it. I know, risky, but it usually works out, ha! So, I am going to give you estimates and you can decide how much you want to add.

There's something else you should know. I forgot to take pictures of the process, ugh!

Put your water on to boil for the pasta and cook as directed while you are preparing the cheese sauce - I used 4 C of pasta. That way they are both done about the same time.

Begin by dicing your onion into desired amounts. Add butter to your pan and cook the onion just until softened. Add about 1/3 to 1/2 C of flour, slowly, until a paste forms. Gradually add about 1 C of milk, stirring constantly until your mixture boils. Continue stirring for about one minute longer. You will have a very nice cream sauce. Remove from the heat and stir in cheese. I used the large block of Velveeta Cheese and 1 C each of the other two. Allow the mixture to melt together to form your cheese sauce. Add Bacos at this time. Of course you could use actual bacon instead.

Once your pasta is cooked and drained, add together with your cheese sauce and place in a baking dish. Sprinkle the top with bread crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees until the top is browned and the mixture is bubbling.

Now that is super yummy!

Beautiful Blogging ~ The 411 on Gel Nail Polish

Have you heard about the new Gel Nail Polish? It's supposed to last for 2 weeks without chipping and it is becoming all the rage.

These nail polishes are referred to as "soak off" nail gels because you must soak off the gel rather than simply removing it like traditional nail polish. Gel nail polish is supposed to be easy on the nail and last like forever!

You must have this done by a professional because it has to "cure" under a UV light after each coat. The procedure is the same in that the nail technician uses a base coat, 2 color coats, and a top coat but then each coat must cure before the next one is applied. Thus, it takes more time and is about twice in cost as a traditional manicure. The beauty lies in the results. Once you are done, you are dry. You leave the salon with absolutely no worries about chipping, banging, or smudging your nail color. Of course if you like to change your color frequently gel nail polish may not be for you! Also, some fear it may damage the nail if not properly removed.

There are so shortage of choice these day in terms of colors. OPI Axxium for example has over 40 shades. Shellac is also another popular brand.

So after reading all about Gel Nail Polish what is a girl to do who must, yes must, have a weekly manicure or she feels totally discheveled? Well, of course the answer is try it, duh! It was hard actually finding a salon near me that was using it but I lucked out one day and accidentally stumbled in one. I made the mistake of buying some on eBay, misunderstanding initially that you needed the UV dryer which of course I don't have.

So far I've tried it twice. I don't actually remember the brand name that my salon uses. The first time the color actually started peeling after about 9 days and I was not a happy camper! Plus, it easily peeled off my nails after I started messing with it. Ugh! I actually had to have nude nails for a day until I could make it to the salon. It really was traumatic!

But, I decided to try it one more time. I thought this could save me time in the long run so what the heck!

This time the color is actually lasting. No chips, no smudges, no nothing! It still shines like the day I got it done. Interestingly, after curing it with the UV light, my technician swipes the color with a bit of alcohol to allow it to dry. It is not completely dry after the curing. Once he applied the alcohol though it was dry.

So here's my opinion on gel nail polish:

Pro's

It's completely dry when you leave the salon. No worries about smudging or scraping.
It really does last for at least two weeks and stays shiny and bright.
Saves time - no fix ups in-between manicures and only a trip every two weeks.

Cons

It is more expensive. A bottle can run at least 17 dollars, usually more. The manicure is more expensive too (but it equals out if you only go every other week).
The nail still grows which means you will see the nail near the cuticle the second week.
You will spend longer in the salon "curing."

Clearly, I have mixed feelings about the gel. I am a bit picky, okay, anal, so the re-growth is actually driving me nuts! While I don't like chips, the regrowth is driving me bonkers! Plus, I always bring my own regular nail color to the salon so I can fix any chips throughout the week. So for me, I think I may go back to regular color. Maybe if I am going to have a busy week or two I will get the gel, but for the most part I will stick to traditional nail colors. But, I haven't tried it for a pedicure yet, ha!

Go Bold this Spring ~ Beautiful Blogging

So are you all just as ready for Spring and Summer as I am? I really, really need to see the sunshine and feel the warmth in the air. I am soooooo done with Winter. Mother Nature it's time to move on!

One of the first things I do for Spring is to check out the new makeup trends. I know, you all thought I was going to say something like check my gardens or clean up the yard, ha! Well a girl has to have her priorities, right? I think you all know by now that I absolutely adore makeup. It's fun, it hides flaws, and enhances our beauty. So I ask you, what's not to love!

The colors of Spring and Summer still seem to be fuchsia and coral. But, the theme is BOLD! Are you ready for that? Oh I so am! According to Fashion Magazine the lips are coated in a bright fuchsia or orange.

Fashion Magazine also notes that a bright, bold eye is all the rave this Spring. Just remember though that you don't do both at the same time. Choose one and downplay the other. I tend to prefer to highlight my eyes, mainly because I love to play with eyeshadow.

Are you bold enough for blue? I love to use this shade as an eyeliner. For me, it really enhances my brown eyes!

How about green? All hues of green too! If you're bold go with the lime green. If you're not so bold go with the moss green. Check out Stylelist for more on green. Oh and scroll down to the end of the page because there's a great tutorial on the smoky eye! I sure do love me some smoky eyes!

Real Beauty advises "For a fun, nighttime look, start by applying lighter lilac shades on the inner corners of the eye and darker lavender and plum hues as you move outwards on"

Super pretty, yes? I think you can modify this look to work for daytime too! Don't be afraid to use some bright purple on those eyelids. What fun and oh so chic!

Have you tried the SmokyShadow Blast from Covergirl? They have some awesome color combinations and there's no guess work! Super pretty.

Don't be afraid to shine this season. And, there's plenty to choose from so you can shop in your price range.

Covergirl, Mabelline, and Revlon all have great colors to choose from as do Estee Lauder and Elizabeth Arden.

Now, get out there and be bold this Spring!

New for Spring!

Hello blogging friends! I apologize for being absent from the blogging world lately but I have been a bit overwhelmed moving my private practice to a new location. I am really, really excited about this new venture but I have to learn to do all of the billing and scheduling by myself. I have been spoiled for a long time now and it takes some adjusting. I think I am getting it together more and more as the weeks pass. We shall see, ha!

I am also trying to get some goodies in my boutique for Spring. Here's a sneak peak at some of the items I have added or will be adding.

My Love Story

My own story is not about love at first sight or over-the-top romance. It's more a story about endurance. My hubby and I have been married for more than 22 years and we have endured a lot throughout that time - both wonderful and not so wonderful. I guess that's what they call life.

We met when we were both in our early 20's on a psychiatric unit. Don't jump to conclusions ~ we worked there, ha! What attracted me to him was his sense-of-humor which still continues to this day. Our humor has gotten us through so many difficult times. We had a lot in common and really still do. Our values and goals have always been very similar.

Whenever I have a dream or a goal, no matter what he thinks about it, he supports it. He took care of our toddler triplets A LOT so I could finish graduate school while he still worked at least 50 hours a week. When I said I wanted to start a business, he said okay and jumped right in to help. Imagine a 6'2" man selling soap! Yep, he never complained and frankly he was better at it than me! When I wanted to open my private practice he jumped on board even though money would be a little tight while it was building. Yes, once again he never complained and just worked more. He continues to work in a job he doesn't love anymore and can retire from. But, he's working like a dog to help put our triplets through college.

I could go on and on about the sacrifices he's made over the years. He is the most wonderful man I have ever met and has allowed me to understand that there are good men out there, despite my past experiences. So David, while I certainly don't tell you enough and there's no doubt I take you for granted, I do love you and thank you for everything you've done and will undoubtedly do, for me and the children. Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Pink Saturday!

Who doesn't love Pink Saturday? Better yet, who doesn't love a Valentine's Pink Saturday!!!!!

I recently participated in a Chocolate Swap with my friends at Etsy Cottage Style and I thought this would be the perfect post to share it. My wonderful partner was Judy who runs this little Etsy shop here. She sent me the most wonderful box of chocolates from a sweet little shop near her home.

Don't you just love the anticipation of opening the box....

...even better, opening a pretty pink box filled with chocolate!

Is your mouth watering yet, ha!!!! This chocolate is to die for! I especially like the chocolate and nuts, Yum! As you can see from the picture above I couldn't wait to take a little taste!

So naturally I forgot to take pictures of the goodies I sent Judy but she was so sweet to send me some so I could share.

Based upon what Judy told me she liked, I sent her some yummy white chocolate hearts, raspberry creams, sponge candy (which is a Western New York exclusive), and some milk chocolate hearts. Plus, I threw in a few little extra goodies!

It was so much fun and I really have to thank Judy for being such a great swap partner!
