As part of our ongoing commitment to using every dollar responsibly, Ronald McDonald House Louisville invited ERA Group to conduct an independent Opportunity Assessment across selected supplier costs and operational spend.

ERA Group works with organizations to uncover hidden savings opportunities across supplier costs, contracts and operational spend. For many organizations, that process identifies areas where costs can be reduced or managed differently.

For Ronald McDonald House Louisville, the outcome was different – and just as valuable.

Following an independent Opportunity Assessment, ERA Group found no material savings opportunities. Rather than raising concerns, the result provided assurance that costs were already being managed with care, discipline and transparency.

For our organization, that validation supports our commitment to responsible financial stewardship and helps show that every available dollar is being directed toward the families we serve.

To find out where savings could be hiding in your organization – or to validate that your costs are already well managed – visit ERA Group and ask about an Opportunity Assessment.

In a place where families are forced to navigate the heavy realities of medical uncertainty, relief often comes in unexpected forms. Sometimes it’s a warm meal or a quiet room, but more often, it’s found in the collective spirit of children and parents persevering together. At Ronald McDonald House Louisville, Kinsley Estes has become a vibrant part of that shared light.

From her everyday “good morning” to the front desk staff to her enthusiasm for every craft and nightly dinners, Kinsley brings a bright light to everyone she meets. She is a constant reminder that recovery is as much about spirit as it is about physical strength.

While Kinsley was healthy at birth, her journey took an unexpected turn around her third birthday. She began experiencing progressive gastrointestinal issues that eventually led to a diagnosis of gastroparesis, a chronic disorder that affects the stomach muscles, and began a long road of medical challenges.

However, these gastrointestinal challenges were only the beginning. By age four, Kinsley faced a rapid decline in her vision and mobility, leading doctors to discover multiple lesions on her brain and spine. For a period of time, Kinsley’s world was defined by hospital walls and the search for answers, as she navigated biopsies and treatments with an incredible amount of courage.

In 2025, Kinsley’s story turned a new leaf. After her condition finally stabilized, her family discovered the Kosair for Kids Pediatric NeuroRecovery Center in Louisville. Here, Kinsley would have the opportunity to participate in an intensive, three-month physical therapy program aimed at regaining her mobility.

It was at this turning point that the Estes family found themselves at a crossroads: How would they be able to fully focus on Kinsley’s recovery if they were constantly on the road between their home in Bowling Green and her treatment in Louisville?

That’s when Ronald McDonald House Louisville became part of their journey. With a place to stay near her treatment, the Estes family no longer had to carry the stress and cost of traveling back and forth. Instead, they could focus on being there for every appointment, milestone, and breakthrough along the way.

This support has made all the difference for the Estes family; as Kinsley’s grandmother expressed, “We’re incredibly grateful for a place that truly lifts a burden off families like ours.”

More than just a place to stay, Ronald McDonald House has provided the Estes’ with a sense of belonging. Surrounded by others facing similar challenges, they found support in the meaningful connections and uplifting community within our walls. Kinsley, in particular, has formed bonds with nearly everyone she meets, bringing joy to those around her while finding comfort and support in return.

In April 2026, Kinsley completed her three-month program and returned home to Bowling Green. With the support of Ronald McDonald House Louisville, her family was able to stay nearby throughout her treatment and focus on being together through every step of the journey.

One unexpected diagnosis turned the LaGarda family’s world upside down. Far from home and facing long days at Norton Children’s Hospital, they found more than a room at Ronald McDonald House, they found a place where meals were warm, burdens felt lighter, and no family had to face fear alone.

For nine months, the LaGarda family found comfort in the quiet, happy routines of a normal pregnancy: attending routine doctor visits, preparing the nursery, picking out clothes, and counting down the days until they met their second son, Max. They expected to leave the hospital as a new family of four, heading home to start their new life together.

But the moment Max arrived, their planned path took an unexpected turn. Instead of the celebration they had envisioned, they were met with the news that Max had been born with a critical heart condition, a diagnosis that hadn’t shown up on previous ultrasounds. The life they expected to have with their new baby at home was suddenly replaced by weeks in the intensive care unit at Norton Children’s Hospital.

Originally from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, the family’s journey was made even more complex by the distance. While their hearts were focused entirely on Max’s recovery, they were physically over 150 miles away from their home. Being two and a half hours from their familiar surroundings meant being away from their house, their family, and the everyday support system they had always relied on.

Just as the weight of everything almost began to feel too heavy, the LaGarda’s found an anchor at the Ronald McDonald House, just a five-minute walk from where Max was staying at Norton Children’s Hospital. Between those long hospital days, they could step away to a place that truly felt like home for their older son, providing a sense of normalcy when their world felt most upside down.

Now relieved of the burden of constantly worrying about where to stay, rest, and manage daily expenses, the family was allowed to focus on the thing that mattered most: Max’s health. His mother, Estefania, shared, “Ronald McDonald House is more than a place to stay; it’s a place that holds families together when they need it the most.”

Inside those walls, the LaGarda’s were met with kind smiles and “listening ears” from staff and volunteers who truly cared. It was the little things, like a warm meal they didn’t have to cook or a hot shower they didn’t have to search for, that allowed the House to become a sanctuary of peace and comfort during their hardest days.

But the Ronald McDonald House didn’t just provide a roof over their heads; it connected the LaGarda family to a community that truly understands. In the shared spaces of the House, they found strength in the presence of other families facing similar battles. It is a place where empathy is felt in every hallway, offering a sanctuary where no one has to explain their fears or deeper emotions; they can simply be there for one another, with no words needed.

Today, Max and his family are finally settled back home in Hopkinsville, though they still visit the Ronald McDonald House for his routine check-ups. Max continues to grow stronger day by day. When Estefania thinks back on their time at the House, she realizes just how much it changed their lives:

“Without Ronald McDonald House, this journey would have felt lonelier and far heavier than it already was. It gave us stability during uncertainty and comfort during fear.”

What began as a routine trip to Louisville quickly became a journey Ashley and Justin Watson never could have prepared for. In the middle of uncertainty and fear, the Watson family found comfort and support at Ronald McDonald House Louisville.

As Ashley and Justin Watson pulled out of the driveway of their Campbellsville home on December 2, 2016, they headed to Louisville for a routine check-up, dinner, and some last-minute Christmas shopping. They expected a quick trip and a stress-free night, never guessing that they wouldn’t return home for over 120 days.

After a small pregnancy scare over Thanksgiving break, Ashley’s doctor recommended a small checkup with her provider in Louisville. However, during this appointment, Ashley’s blood pressure was so high that she was sent to Labor and Delivery Triage for bloodwork instead of the dinner the couple had planned.

While they waited, Justin and Ashley continued to finalize their evening plans, remaining lighthearted despite the delay. That changed when four doctors and several staff members filed into their tiny triage room.

As the door closed, Ashley noticed the heavy seriousness on their faces. It was in that silence, as her throat closed up and she saw the fear in Justin’s eyes, that Ashley realized they were about to receive news that would change everything.

At only 23 weeks and 5 days pregnant, Ashley was diagnosed with a rare case of early-onset severe pre-eclampsia, a disease where the only cure is delivery.

Over the next few days, the situation turned critical; as her organs began to fail and her vision blurred, the only thing she could think about was the health of her son. Amidst the chaos of emergency prep, Ashley was very aware that this procedure could be life-threatening for both her and her son.

Before her emergency surgery, Ashley and Justin agreed on the name Jon Luke for their son, hoping to give him a name that carried enough strength for the journey they knew he would have to face.

On December 6, 2016, Jon Luke Watson was born, weighing just 1 pound and 7.5 ounces. As the days passed and both Ashely and her son healed from the delivery, a new fear set in, leaving them wondering: How could they possibly leave Jon Luke behind and return to Campbellsville?

“As a dad with a new son, and a wife who couldn’t walk at the time, wondering what we were going to be able to stay close to our son, I had no idea what we were going to do. Until the nurse walked in and said, ‘Have you guys heard about the Ronald McDonald House?’” said Justin Watson.

After leaving their son for the first time in weeks, Ashley and Justin walked through the welcoming doors of the Ronald McDonald House. Decorated with Christmas lights and filled with high-spirited staff, the House immediately gave them something they hadn’t had in days: a space to breathe.

That sense of peace stayed with them through Christmas Day. While Jon Luke was down the street fighting an aggressive blood infection in the NICU, the Ronald McDonald House allowed the Watsons to be close by.

In place of their regular Christmas festivities, Ashley and Justin’s family made the trip to Louisville, bringing the Christmas spirit to them. They all gathered in the third-floor lobby, a space that allowed them to sit, celebrate, and spend time together for the first time in weeks. The room was filled with the warm scent of volunteers baking cookies in the room over, a scent specifically comforting for Ashley.

During their family gift exchange, Justin’s sister passed out gifts to each family member. This exchange held a meaning that Ashley found to be more powerful than words. As they all opened their boxes at the same time, they revealed matching shirts with the phrase “Fight Like a Preemie.” Turning hers over to see the word “Mommy” printed on the back, the ground that had felt so shaky for weeks finally began to feel firm.

Reflecting on the impact of that support, Ashley shared: “In those moments, I felt so much support that it felt like there were physical people propping me up. And that’s what Ronald McDonald House does. They propped us up when we couldn’t sit up.”

The Watsons would spend a total of 125 days at the Ronald McDonald House before Jon Luke was finally healthy enough to go home. Starting their journey with little knowledge of the House, the family became immersed in a community that provided far more than just a place to stay.

They found a support system that carried them through the hardest months of their lives, allowing them to focus entirely on their son’s recovery until they could finally leave as a family.

Since that first stay, the Watson family has returned to the Ronald McDonald House many times, the House becoming a safe haven for young Jon Luke. Now a thriving kid with a passion for sports, he still looks forward to their visits, affectionately calling it the “guest house.” For the Watsons, every day with Jon Luke feels like a blessing, and they credit Ronald McDonald House for giving them the strength to get there.

For Ashley, the gratitude goes deeper than a simple thank you. “I really don’t know if there is a word to express what it means to have had this place during that time,” she shares. “I can’t imagine it ever not being here for the families that need it.”
