I took a ride on the new Interstate 40 section in Greensboro today.

The road was really nice, even though the only real exit on it is the Wendover Avenue picture above. I'm not sure when that new High Point Road interchange will open.

Also, Interstate 73 was mentioned a few times as well.

On the older 2004 Interstate 85 part, Interstate 40 is now signed on it as well, although I noticed the signs on the interchanges still showed Interstate 40 as "To Interstate 40".

New Section of Urban Loop to Open Tomorrow!

Well it's about time!

Tomorrow, the next section of the Greensboro Urban Loop, from Interstate 40 near the airport to Interstate 85 in SW Greensboro will open. This will be exactly 4 years after the Interstate 85 bypass section opened.

Again folks, I can not stress this enough. Interstate 40 will be moved onto the new section of the loop, including the 2004 Interstate 85 section. The old section of Interstate 40 will be renamed Business 40.

This also means that Death Valley will no longer have an Interstate other than an Interstate business route. I just hope the DOT doesn't wait 6 months to replace the old exit number signs and shields on the old Interstate 40.

I will try my best to take a ride on it tomorrow afternoon and take pictures. Tomorrow might not be the best day for me because I may have other plans to tend to.

Grand Opening of Western Loop Segment

Well after 3 1/2 years, the next chapter of the Greensboro Urban Loop has begun.

This section, which runs from Interstate 40 to Bryan Boulevard, is about 4 miles long and includes exits for Interstate 40, Friendly Avenue, and Bryan Boulevard.

One of the most interesting things I noticed was the extensive use of Interstate 73 markers. It appears that they're really serious about routing the new Interstate onto the loop.

New Section of Greensboro Loop to Open Tuesday

Well, it's been since February 2004 that the last segment of the Greensboro Urban Loop opened. Well, the next wait is about over.

According to WFMY News 2, a three mile segment of the loop from Interstate 40 to Bryan Boulevard near PTI Airport will open Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 10:00 AM.

I doubt you will be seeing signs for it, but this segment will be a part of the future Interstate 840 and if all goes well, it may even be a part of the future Interstate 73.

The exciting part, the segment from Interstate 40 to the current end near Grandover Resort won't open until early 2008.

Coincidentally on August 4, 1976, Carolina Circle Mall opened at 10:00 AM as well. Coincidence? I think not! I apologize for my really bad comedy.

18th Birthday

Well, at 11:30 this morning, I officially turned 18.

18 is a pretty big step. During my 18 years of life, I've seen roads open, stores open and close, schools close, and malls close. I've seen a lot and I'm looking forward to what's ahead of me during the next 18 years.

Great Progress on Painter Boulevard

I must say that the current segment of the Greensboro Urban Loop that is under construction is making pretty great progress.

What I've seen so far recently:

Concrete and pavement have seemed to have been laid out.
Sign posts have been put up and even a couple of signs.
You can now make out the on/off-ramps.

What still needs to be done:

More road signs need to be put up.
Lines need to be painted.
Medians need to be installed.

Now please bare with me on these observances. I've mainly seen the interchange at Interstate 40 in-between Exits 211 & 213 so those observances are greatly localized to that one area.

Overall, I wouldn't be surprised to see this road open in November.

Concord Mills Carousel

This is about the only picture I took at Concord Mills today that didn't come out blurry.

This carousel definately was not there when I was last there in 2004. It's a relatively small carousel, but looks pretty cool. I really like those string like neon lights at the top. Just like Carolina Circle Mall, the carousel is located at the mall's food court.

Road Sign Pictures from Today's Concord Mills Trip

I took a trip to the Concord Mills mall in Concord (Near Charlotte) today and took 58 road sign pictures that can be viewed here.

What really caught my attention was how much progress has been made on the Intersate 85 resurfacing project in Rowan County. When I last went through there a year ago when I was picking up the Carolina Circle Mall restroom sign, the road was still a big mess! But now, only one small part of the Interstate is still under construction.

Pictures of Wilmington's Independence Mall

While I was at the beach this week, I rode up to Wilmington and visted the Independence Mall. I had been there before, but I hadn't been to that mall since 2002.

My opinion on it is that it's a pretty nice mall. It's pretty big for a one-story mall and it has the most unusual layout imaginable as well as an odd shaped food court. The JCPenney actually had two mall entrances! Although it's not to phenominal Carolina Circle Mall standards, I admit it's a pretty cool mall. Also, I don't think I've seen a mall with a double deck carousel before.

New loop section to ease city congestion

ABC might be adding a new show about cavemen to their primetime lineup this fall, but Greensboro will hopefully be debuting the next section of the Greensboro Urban Loop this fall.

According to an article in Thursday's Greensboro News & Record, that Robert Malme emailed me today, the next segment of "Painter Blvd." is scheduled to open in late November which will hopefull be a pretty nice 18th birthday present for me.

This article is also the first media mention of the I-40 relocation to the loop. Prior to this, this information was only known to the DOT and many Roadgeeks.

From what I've seen of the current construction, crews seem to mainly be focused on the Interstate 85 interchange and the Friendly Avenue interchange. It's been taking them forever to finish the Interstate 40 interchange.

Beach Trip 2007 Road Signs

I have returned to Greensboro today after a 5 day long trip to Kure Beach, NC. As promised, I have returned with many many road sign pictures.

I have been taking pictures of road signs since I believe 1998 and I think that this is the most I have ever taken since then.

The picture above by the way is a glimpse of Raleigh's Interstate 540 from the perspective of Interstate 40, including it's latest segment known as "NC-540". I believe it was named this to allow it to possibly become a toll road in the future.

Beach Ride '07

Tomorrow I'll be heading back to Kure Beach, NC for Beach Trip 2007, despite some allergy problems I've been having the past couple of days.

I'll be spending an extra day this year so I won't be back until this coming Friday. If I have any luck hooking up to dial-up Internet on my laptop at the beach, I'll try to post something, however that's pretty optimistic.

As usual, I promise plenty of road sign pictures once I return.

It has been confirmed. Yesterday, Drew Carey was named the new host of The Price is Right.

I am looking forward to see how he does once Season 36 begins. He will definately not be another Bob Barker, but I like Drew Carey and wish him the best of luck.

Interstate 40 Meets Carolina Circle Mall

This is rather pointless, but I thought I'd share this.

With some phopshopping, I was able to modify Carolina Circle Mall's emblem and make it look like Interstate 40 with the same Interstate shield colors.

North Carolina Future Interstates

This is a website I have been looking at for the past several years, but haven't had a chance to look at recently.

As the title of the post suggests, this website takes a look at some future Interstates in North Carolina. It mainly takes a look at Interstates 73 and 74, but many favorites are featured including the Greensboro Urban Loop.

Interestingly, this website mentions that the portion of the Greensboro Urban Loop under construction from Interstate 40 to Bryan Boulevard will be open by July 21, 2007, next Saturday. This was probably an old updated because I took a look at the construction yesterday and there are still no signs up at the Interstate 40 interchange. It also mentions the section from Interstate 40 to Interstate 85 currently under construction will be open by November 2007.

Road City Returns!

Alright, I now realize I've been neglecting Road City lately. Here's what's up.

First of all, I'm considering discontinuing the Roadgeek's Garfield of the Week and the Road Sign of the Week. I'm now more busy on Sundays than I used to be and it's going to get harder for me to find a Garfield comic and a road sign picture to put up here on a chronological basis.

One reason why Road City hasn't been updated recently is due to the fact that I'm mainly focussing on Carolina Circle City and the new Home of Carolina Circle Mall. I've still got to figure out the best way to manage Home of Carolina Circle Mall. I'm currently creating it with Microsoft Publisher 2003 and I can't figure out how to let pictures be saved to one's hard drive.

So don't worry. I'm going to try and put something up here when I can. Road City is far from dead.

Photo Album Update

As you all know, the photo album hosting for the Roadgeek BlogRing is done by Yahoo! Photos. Well, I've got some sad news for you tonight.

Starting in I think June, Yahoo! will no longer offer the Photo service. This makes me rather upset because I think they did a pretty good job.

I've tried Flickr, and discovered that their free service can only support 3 albums. Way too little for me!

However, I came across Webshots. Like Flickr, they have free and premium services, but the free has everything I need.

Gradually, the photo albums linked from my blogs will be switched to Webshots. During this time, some will be Webshots and some will remain Yahoo! Photos until Yahoo! Photos becomes another Carolina Circle.

The current western terminus of Interstate 840 outside of Greensboro at US-70.

I'm assuming that that huge overhead caution sign will be replaced with a guide-sign for US-70 when the loop is extended in the future.
