I came across this great tip by David Allen via Dave Logan at bnet.com:

The big breakthrough came when I was first teaching at USC and a student with severe dyslexia asked for help. Not knowing what to do, I turned to an expert on learning disorders. She advised that I let the student take the exam in my office, giving him short breaks every 20 minutes. The student did very well, surprising us both, and I was intrigued. After years of working with 20-minute segments, the Multiple Put Down technique was born. I’ve used it to write four books, a dissertation and thousands of speeches.

Here it is: work on a task in 20-minute increments, with absolute focus, and then put it down, over and over, until you’re done.

You must read the whole article here.

Eye doctors will tell you about the 20/20/20 rule of rest breaks. Every twenty minutes, look up twenty feet away, and count to twenty seconds. Reading requires our eyes to turn in and accommodate (flexing the focusing muscles). Reading for long periods of time creates strain and stress on your eyes, so taking a short break every once in a while helps you read longer and easier.

I can’t help but wonder if the Multiple Put Down technique and the 20/20/20 rule are related.

As promised, I have created a digital version of the 53 Week Goal Tracker using an OpenOffice.org spreadsheet. Download version 0.1.1 here. For those of you who are security aware, the MD5 checksum is:

05883B387FD464E8A0C71E72DCF9A776

By the way, an OpenOffice spreadsheet is a lot like a Microsoft Excel or Corel Quattro Pro spreadsheet. The big difference is that the OpenOffice suite is free, open-source software. I highly recommend it.

This spreadsheet file is believed to be non-malicious; however, I make no warranties or guarantees, so use this file at your own risk.

Instructions:
Just like the paper version of the 53 Week Goal Tracker, once a week you enter into the spreadsheet your weekly totals (or averages) from your Daily Dats™. The spreadsheet creates a graph so you can visually see at a glance how you are doing.

Feel free to customize the spreadsheet. You can replace “Goal #X” with your goal’s abbreviation. You can alter the graphs to make them more meaningful to you. Have fun with it.

With any important electronic file, it is wise to create backups so you don’t lose your data when you accidentally delete something. Of course, all the data should be on the back page of your weekly Roadmap Planner in the Daily Dats™, but still, it would be annoying to delete everything at week 40 then have to retype everything.
